T

he Teal It Up Ovarian Cancer Foundation is committed to helping women navigate the challenges of ovarian cancer. The foundation is a 501 (c) 3, tax exempt organization established in 2013, based in Scottsdale, AZ. Started by Jan Coggins, an eight year survivor of ovarian cancer, our foundation’s main goal is to educate, educate, educate! We believe that every woman deserves to know the symptoms of this disease. This knowledge is her chance for an earlier diagnosis, in fact, her right to survive. Every 37 minutes, a woman in this country dies from ovarian cancer.....most could have survived. Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the U.S. Early detection of ovarian cancer can increase life expectancy up to 95%, however due to the subtle nature of symptoms, patients are very often misdiagnosed. Teal It Up strives to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, support other ovarian cancer patients, and raise funds for critical research initiatives in ovarian cancer detection. All of the foundation board members have been touched by ovarian cancer. We know that, without more funding, so many more people will also find ovarian cancer in their lives. ARE YOU AWARE THAT.... • Ovarian cancer is TEN TIMES more deadly than breast cancer • Pap tests do NOT detect ovarian cancer • There is no current screening for ovarian cancer • Even if you’ve had a hysterectomy, you may still be at risk if you have your ovaries or fallopian tubes STATISTICS: • 70% of ovarian cancer patients do not discover this cancer until it has advanced to stage 3 or 4 • 70% of these patients will have a recurrence of their cancer, even after aggressive treatment • 70% of these women will succumb to ovarian cancer DO YOU KNOW THE SYMPTOMS? Bloating, Pelvic and Abdominal Pain, Difficulty Eating or Feeling Full Quickly, Urinary Changes (urgency or frequency), Family history of Breast or Ovarian Cancer. If you experience any of these symptoms seek out a gynecologic oncologist. If you have a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer you may be a candidate for genetic testing. You may want to contact a genetic counselor. A list of counselors can be found on the resource page on our website: www.tealitup.org.

impact survivors. We do have small administrative costs such as printing, however, we aim for getting much of those costs donated. The following is a list of what the folks with Teal It Up do in our community to help promote awareness. Funds donated are allocated to some of the programs listed below that need continued financial support. • Comfort bags delivered to newly diagnosed and recurring patients • Pet therapy visits to treatment rooms and hospitals • Financial support of genetic counseling and testing within Arizona when medically indicated • Housecleaning for patients in treatment who meet criteria set by Arizona Oncology Foundation • Community outreach programs that raise awareness for ovarian cancer; visiting doctor’s offices, supermarkets, health fairs, seminars, etc. • Participating in Survivors Teaching Students, a national program sponsored by Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance. Teal It Up is very supportive of STS. In the valley we go to the University of Arizona medical school, as well as local nursing schools to share our individual stories of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship • Fundraising events such as golf tournaments, clay target shooting, pistol tournament shoots, and in 2018, a bowling tournament. Fundraising events provide community awareness of not only our foundation but more importantly the disease and its impact • Support research projects that impact women in treatment • Recently seen at the Women’s Expo, Teal It Up Ovarian Cancer Foundation makes frequent appearances throughout the valley where they can provide information, educational material and personal support. THE DAPPER DOUGHNUT TO OPEN IN DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE THIS FALL, A WHIMSICAL-YETSOPHISTICATED NEW MINI DOUGHNUT SHOP IS COMING TO DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE – THEIR FIRST LOCATION IN ARIZONA. Before we get you drooling over their menu, you may be wondering how this tasty franchise come to be. As a teenager, franchise and food and beverage veteran Jeff Pappas grew up going to Schultz’s farm in Armonk, NY to grab a hot fresh doughnut every weekend. The line would always be around the building no matter what time of day. He’d buy a dozen doughnuts and before he got back home they’d be gone. Schultz’s farm is no longer around but the memories of those incredible fresh doughnuts remained. Fast forward to 2015 when Jeff decided to franchise such a business by seeking a successful (freshly made) doughnut company. He came across Jimmy Nuccio and Gabriel Wiesen of Chicago’s award-winning Beavers Coffee & Donuts. Jeff learned about the new niche in the doughnut industry of mini doughnuts. Beavers had been

operating successfully for four years and had received a bunch of awards and had great accolades on Yelp. They got together and all shared this incredible passion for fresh doughnuts made to order. Jeff, Jimmy and Gabriel soon decided to join forces and established “The Dapper Doughnut.” Dapper Doughnuts does never things the boring way. Their mini-doughnuts are “cake style”. They are light and moist and slightly crunchy. They will be located in The District of Desert Ridge Marketplace in a glass-box kiosk. Their doughnuts are made all day long so they’re always hot and fresh—you can even see them being made. They are custom designed and decorated with the freshest ingredients and sauces. Even the toppings are ‘proprietary’, and each doughnut is custom created right in front of you. They carry 24 unique toppings and sugars, so the combinations of topping are virtually endless…think s’mores, cinnamon sugar, peanut butter & jelly, fluffed butter and more. Dapper Doughnuts will also carry the accompanying staple that we all love

so much: coffee. Offering two blends from Africa, Central and South America and Indonesia, they roast their beans manually in small batches, ensuring you will always get the freshest cup. If coffee isn’t your thing, they also have milk, juice, water and DOUGHNUT MILKSHAKES! Yes, you read that right.

Want them for the office or your next event? They will even be offering onsite and offsite catering! Local residents are excited to see “fresh blood” coming into the area, adding to the already eclectic mix of dining and entertainment in Desert Ridge. Stay tuned for an exact opening date!

AMERICA’S FIRST FOR-SALE COMMUNITY FOR ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO DEBUT IN PHOENIX MILLIONS OF FAMILIES ACROSS AMERICA HAVE A LOVED ONE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND HAVE STRUGGLED WITH FINDING APPROPRIATE PERMANENT HOUSING. Luna Azul, a new development of 30 homes in North Phoenix, addresses that problem. Developed by Mark Roth and located at 16th St. and Loop 101, the development is the nation’s first for-sale residential community for adults with special needs. The project is scheduled to break ground next month and the first residents can expect to move in mid-next year. “Luna Azul is a community where residents can live permanently, safely, and make lasting friendships. The community is suitable for adults with disabilities, providing them and others convenient access to services, vocational opportunities and urban amenities, and an atmosphere within which to live life securely and on their own terms,” said Roth.

Roth decided to develop the community when looking for a permanent housing solution for his daughter with special needs. When penciling out the cost of life long housing and the support she’d need, he found that buying her a suitable place and having help come to her was the most economical option. Since residents will own their own homes, they will be able to customize their homes to fit their needs and hire in whatever level of help they require.

The neighborhood will be comprised of thirty independently owned cottages. The 2- and 3-bedroom homes will consist of four floor plans, ranging in size from 1,152 to 1,956 sq. ft., and will feature open living spaces, large front porches, high quality finishes, and will be wired for Z-Wave technology. Pricing will range from mid-$300,000s to mid-$500,000s. Community amenities will include a clubhouse with a living room, a multi-purpose flex room and kitchen, and will be built around large public gathering spaces and a pool. The community also will have a perimeter wall, gated, controlled entry, a full-time director, and 24/7 onsite staff. The Luna Azul concept is based on the idea of pocket neighborhoods made famous by noted architect Ross Chapin from Langley, Washington.According to Chapin, “a pocket neighborhood provides the setting for neighbors to develop meaningful relationships beyond family and housemates.”

Each cottage includes a front porch facing the commons. While enjoying the porch and other outdoor common areas, residents will find it easy to engage in conversations with neighbors and passersby, helping foster caring relationships and a meaningful sense of community. Sales and marketing is being handled by Launch Real Estate. “We are honored to have been selected to handle the sales for this innovative new community and we’re excited for the opportunity to share the project with prospective residents and their loved ones,” said Sean Zimmerman with LaunchPAD Sales & Marketing Group. “Luna Azul is one of the most important projects we’ve worked on, and initial interest in the project has been overwhelming.” WHAT LUNA AZUL IS: • A supportive environment for adults with all disabilities • An independent living setting • A for-sale property WHAT LUNA AZUL IS NOT: • An institution • An assisted living facility • ADA compliant For more information, please visit LunaPHX.com or call 480.626.1964.

BUSINESS

3 THINGS PRODUCTIVE ENTREPRENEURS DO AT THE END OF THEIR DAY By Cindy Gordon

D

oes the time pass by so quickly you never feel like you’ve accomplished enough? Do you always feel behind the eight-ball with too many deadlines looming and not enough time to get them done? Is your business growth stagnant because you don’t have time to get to the important tasks that will move it forward? By incorporating these three steps into your daily habits you will become more productive and see your business grow. SET YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR TOMORROW What makes a person productive is focus. It’s very easy to get caught in the weeds of your business and forget about the important tasks that will make the biggest difference to your business. Stepping back to look at all the things that need to be done and taking time to ask yourself which the highest priorities are will enable you to start your day off working on the vital tasks, instead of allowing yourself to step into the tasks that are comfortable and easy. SCHEDULE TIME FOR EMAILS AND MESSAGES Like Pavlov’s dog, we have been trained to react to the sound of a bell. Unfortunately, the bell is the chime of an incoming email. As soon as we hear the chime, we turn our attention away from the task at hand to fulfill our curiosity and our need to feel important. An email only takes a few minutes to deal with yet adding to that the time it takes to get refocused on your work can lead to 5 – 10 minutes of low productivity per email. Multiply that by the number of notifications you receive, and you could easily be losing hours of productive time a day. No wonder you always feel overwhelmed with work! northtatumtimes.com

Keep your email software closed, and your phone on mute while you work. Schedule two or three breaks within your day to deal with emails and messages. This allows you to break from your tasks when it is convenient and stay focused and productive throughout the day. DOWNLOAD A TIME TRACKING APP When you are in midst of work, you don’t realize where your time gets sucked up. Since downloading a time tracking app (I use RescueTime, but there are lots of others to choose from), I have been able to see how much time I spend in different programs and if I have too much idle time. The program runs in the background of your computer system and provides you with a weekly breakdown of your time. I never realized how much time my daily crossword puzzles took up. Once seeing the data, I was able to be more conscious about when I play games and what needs to get done first. This type of software is great to help employees be more productive, but I strongly suggest not to use it to spy on them. This can negatively effect their trust in you and commitment to your company. These three easy steps are not only great ways to improve productivity, it’s also excellent for being more strategic and intentional in your business. Having your goals in mind will make planning your priorities more tactical to get the greatest return on your investment of time. ART AND CULTURE IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

A

rizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. The Sonoran Desert itself is one-of-a-kind, featuring the lushest desert in the world with distinct flora and fauna only found in our area. The arts and culture in the Valley of the Sun are no exception to this pattern. Many of our local galleries, theaters and museums are as unique to the Sonoran Desert as the giant Saguaro Cactus and the Gila Monster. Here are some of our favorite places to visit for a Phoenix twist on arts and culture.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM The Musical Instrument Museum, or the MIM as we affectionately call it, displays more than 6,800 instruments collected from around the world. This state-of-the-art facility showcases musical instruments from almost all cultures and civilizations in modern history, with high tech audio and video capabilities that allow guests to not only see the instruments, but also hear their sounds and observe them being played. The MIM opened it’s doors in 2010 to provide visitors with a unique experience by bringing their collection of instruments to life through technology that enables visitors to see and hear these instruments in their original cultural settings. It is truly like no other museum in the world. The MIM hosts concert performances, events, children’s and educational programs that encourage all visitors to learn about and enjoy music. Visitors are also invited to play instruments from around the world in the Experience Gallery, where guests can try out everything from a guitar and banjo to drums or a giant gong. The Artist Gallery showcases contemporary musicians from around the world, with a collection of instruments from music icons such as John Lennon, Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley®, Carlos Santana, and many more. 8 • August 2018 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

HEARD MUSEUM One of the most distinctive museums in the Valley of the Sun is the Heard Museum. Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming and unrivaled festivals. The museum has one of the largest and most outstanding collections of American Indian artwork in the country. It includes historic, cultural and fine art collections of more than 3600 pieces, and extensive documentation of the development of the American Indian Fine Art Movement, starting in the 20th century. The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum presents stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective and exhibits that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary Native American art. The Heard Museum is a Phoenix treasure that provides visitors with a unique perspective of our cultural heritage in the Southwest.

HERBERGER THEATER CENTER The Herberger Theater Center was built in 1989 as a key component of downtown Phoenix redevelopment and revitalization efforts. The non-profit center supports and fosters the growth of performing arts in Phoenix, and has gone a long way toward contributing to the cultural and educational development of performing arts in the Valley of the Sun. The Herberger attracts around 120,000 patrons annually, including more than 30,000 school-aged children who get the opportunity to share the unique experience of live performing arts. A hub of performing arts in Phoenix, the Herberger Theater Center is home to various resident and visiting companies, including: Arizona Theatre Company, Center Dance Ensemble, iTheatre Collaborative, Arizona Opera, Childsplay Theatre, Arizona Broadway Theatre, and Valley Youth Theatre. The variety of performances and theater troupes and it’s place in the historic revitalization efforts of downtown Phoenix make a visit to the Herberger a great way to enjoy a performing arts experience unique to the Valley of the Sun.

PHOENIX ART MUSEUM As the largest art museum in the Southwestern United States, the Phoenix Art Museum is a premier destination for world-class visual arts. The museum provides access to more than 19,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, and fashion design. Built in 1959, the Phoenix Art Museum has hosted more than 400 exhibitions and millions of visitors with the simple mission to be “a vibrant destination connecting people to great art from around the world to enrich their lives and communities.” The museum provides a variety of exhibitions and public programs for visitors all year, including tours, lectures, films, special events and educational opportunities. Visitors can also enjoy photography exhibitions through the Museum’s landmark partnership with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. STARTING COLLEGE TODAY WILL

CREATE A BETTER TOMORROW By Dr. Eric Leshinskie Vice President of Academic Affairs at Paradise Valley Community College

A

s summer winds down and fall quickly approaches, many high school graduates may still be considering their next step both personally and professionally. Furthermore, as the job market continues to show signs of improvement, many working adults may be looking for ways to get ahead in their current job or may be interested in switching careers. Whether you are a recent high school graduate or a working adult, starting or returning to college today will definitely help you to create a better tomorrow. In my 15 years working with community college students, I am constantly amazed with just how many activities and responsibilities are part of our students’ lives. Many college students juggle their studies with part-time jobs and family responsibilities, often pulling them in multiple directions. Sometimes, students are able to thrive with such busy lives, and they can handle the hectic pace of managing college while having so little free time. These success stories are often so inspiring! Other students, however, struggle to fit their studies into their busy schedules and consequently, may choose to postpone their college career until their lives are more manageable. Unfortunately, many students who make this decision often do not return to college because life often gets in the way. This is why I encourage students to start their college journey, even if only enrolling in one class, to experience the excitement of the college learning environment and to begin to build a better tomorrow. Fortunately, college campuses are becoming better prepared to meet the needs of students leading such busy lives. Faculty, staff, and administrators are working to reshape the mindset from whether students are ready for college to whether colleges are ready for students. This paradigm shift creates more innovative ways to support learning and to support students in achieving their goals. First, most colleges offer flexible start dates for their courses. Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), for example, offers a wide array of courses that start throughout each semester, providing students with flexibility to begin courses

in a timeframe that meets their needs. In addition, most colleges offer different ways to take courses, either face-to-face or in an online learning environment. This variety appeals to the working professional or the busy parent, again providing the necessary flexibility for students to take courses in a manner that best suits their learning needs. College campuses are also redesigning their support services to meet students’ needs. For example, online tutoring services are offered at most colleges to allow students to receive the additional support they need when they need it. Similarly, the PVCC library offers a 24/7 Ask a Librarian service that provides around the clock research support for students. Finally, colleges have created electronic student centers that allow students the ability to enroll and pay for classes, and even to seek advising. Students sometimes experience anxiety when stepping into a college classroom for the first time, questioning whether they will be able to keep up with the pace of the college coursework, or if college is even the right place for them. One of the hallmarks of community colleges, however, is they strive to provide a supportive and welcoming environment. One way this is accomplished is by having lower class sizes, with most classes ranging from 20-30 students. Additionally, instructors take the time to get to know their students, placing a high value on building relationships in the classroom to support student learning. Finally, colleges offer college success courses to assist students in transitioning back to the classroom. These courses, taught by highly qualified faculty counselors, provide students with the necessary tips and strategies to be successful. Starting college now is a great choice. There will be a variety of reasons why you shouldn’t start your college journey today; however, colleges are designed to meet your needs. You are definitely ready to help yourself create a better future. Dr. Eric Leshinskie is the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC). PVCC offers courses classes at two convenient locations. The PVCC Union Hills campus is located on Union Hills and 32nd Street. PVCC at Black Mountain is located on 60th street and Carefree Highway.

TRANSITIONING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL MIDDLE SCHOOL SUCCESS TIPS By Paradise Valley Unified School District

T

he leap from elementary school to middle school is a big one. Students entering middle school are no longer the big fish in the pond. The world of change, independence and opportunity are opening up. For some students, they may have an older sibling or friend attending the school who can provide insider tips for middle school success. Here are a few tips to ensure that the transition from elementary school to middle school is successful for all students. SCHEDULE A TOUR If you and your child haven’t already visited the school, this is a good opportunity to schedule a tour of the new school. School tours allow you to get an inside look at the day-today activities that happen in middle school. Make sure you bring a list of questions that you want to address by the end of the tour and jot down any follow-up questions you may have. Attend your child’s meet the teacher or back to school event. This is a good time for your child to meet his or her teachers and get acquainted with the layout of the school.

GET ORGANIZED Organization is the key to success in middle school and will prepare your child for high school and beyond. With several classes to prepare for each day, your child may want to have a separate folder and/or notebook for each subject. Also, a student planner may come in handy to jot down important information such as deadlines for assignments and testing dates. ASK FOR HELP Your child may need some time to adjust to the new routines of middle school. After a few weeks, if your child still needs help, ask for it. It’s important that students speak up and ask questions in class to clarify any content that they don’t understand. Remember that teachers, counselors and administrators are there to help your child succeed. PVSchools also offers Free Resources for Online Student Tutoring (FROST) to all students in the district, which will be available in September. FROST is a student-driven, tutoring program that creates a casual, easy to use learning environment for students who need extra assistance with their academic subjects. Qualified high school students are available to provide tutoring in any subject matter for any student, kindergarten through 12th grade. GET INVOLVED Being involved in school activities is one way to ensure that your child’s middle school experience is fun and memorable. Encourage your child to join clubs, school committees and run for student government. Throughout the school year, there maybe dance or athletic events that your middle schooler may want to attend. Show your support by offering to drive.

COVER STORY STAGE DREAMS YOUTH THEATER:

TEACHING KIDS TO REACH FOR THE STARS By Jennifer Marshall

A

s parents, we’ll do anything for our kids. We want them to have the best of everything. More important than material trimmings, we want them to enjoy as many positive experiences as possible, which allows them the opportunity to grow to their fullest potential. Take your child’s adventurous journey to the next level with Stage Dreams Youth Theater. I recently chatted with Becky James, the owner and founder of Stage Dreams Youth Theater, to learn more about this exciting program for school-age children K-12.

Ms. James said she’s “always loved theater,” and living the mantra of doing what you love, she attended Radford University, in Radford, Virginia, where she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Performance with a Minor in Music. Propelled by dreams of stardom, she moved to Los Angeles after graduation. Even aspiring stars still need to pay the bills, so she earned an education degree and sought out opportunities to teach drama and theater related classes. While doing this for a couple of years, she made a life-changing discovery. She loved interacting with her students and passing on her knowledge of the subject she loved best. Love, of the romantic kind, swept her away to Phoenix where she continued her education career. As she taught music and headed up school drama clubs, she fully realized just how happy and fulfilled she was. “I realized,” said Ms. James, “this is what I want to do full-time. I want to teach theater and arts education, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past six years.” This fall will

mark the seventh year for Stage Dreams Youth Theater. Thanks to Ms. James’ ingenuity, Stage Dreams is a unique concept in that she has rented space at three North Phoenix locations: Happy Valley Baptist Church, The Way Fellowship Church and, in our area, Aviano Community Center. These locations are basically carbon copies of each other as they serve as the home base for all theater practices. All three being run identically means that they all perform the same musicals at the same time, and because each location hosts practice on different days, they’re served by the same professional staff. “There’s a need for arts education in this area,” said Ms. James. “Lots of schools have either cut it, or they don’t have enough slots for everyone. We found a niche that serves our community here.” Every fall and spring, Stage

Dreams focuses on a new musical production. Everyone who registers is guaranteed a part, and each class comprises its own cast for the musical. Unlike a traditional theater, where the cast can practice three or four times a week for eight weeks, at Stage Dreams, the pace is more relaxed. And with the three different locations, life is easier for parents because it’s all local. In the fall, the program begins in September and ends in January, and in the spring, it starts in February and concludes in May. As a culmination of all they’ve learned and practiced for the past months, the kids put on a live musical performance to close out each program term. They do two of these performances, which are held at Glendale Community College. “Our program,” said Ms. James, “is about providing an opportunity to experience theater in a safe and nurturing environment so that kids northtatumtimes.com

COVER STORY Broadway career. But according to Ms. James: “Their goal isn’t to produce the next Broadway stars, but to help each child reach their next level of growth.” She sees her program as having broader positive life and educational benefits. As a ardent believer in the “importance of arts education,” Ms. James had the following to say about how her program teaches more than just drama.

really can try it without having to dedicate eight weeks of their life to a huge project.” To Ms. James and her dedicated staff of drama teachers and theater professionals, it’s all about the children they serve. Each child is unique in their eyes with something special to offer, and each child has untapped potential that hopefully can be realized and shared in this creative environment. They welcome kids who have absolutely no experience to those who dream of a life of stardom on The Great White Way. And for those who have many years of stage experience behind them, they serve as a “buddy” and mentor to those theater newbies. Stage Dreams could serve as a solid foundation for a future northtatumtimes.com

“It’s not just performing in a show; there’s a lot of life skills the kids walk away with beyond just being able to sing, beyond just remembering to face the audience, beyond the diction that you need to have when you’re performing; it’s a collaborative work process. You have to be able to communicate with the other people that are in your show, which builds up your self-confidence, and you have to understand that everybody who’s in the cast is important.”

“In theater,” said Ms. James, “you have to learn to work and communicate with a group. Theater also teaches dedication and teamwork; you have to be reliable and be there for your team. If you’re not there, the whole cast suffers. You need to practice your part, which adds to the full production.” She related the story to me of a girl who was playing Princess Fiona in Shrek. She was singing with two other girls when her wig slid off mid song. What did this young actress do? Nothing. She continued to sing her heart out like nothing had happened. She treated the troublesome wig as part of the act. She never missed a beat; she never got nervous; she never lost her composure. She owned her part, and she owned her moment. As Ms. James said: “This is who you want to hire to do your presentations for big clients because you know that if something happens to their powerpoint presentations they’re going to be able to continue the presentation, and they’re not going to lose their

cool; they’re going to be able to handle it calmly and professionally.” The show must go on—life’s full of disappointments and setbacks. As humans, we have to persevere and achieve even when we feel like we want to climb back into bed and not face the day ahead of us. Being able to push forward through adversity takes confidence, and theater can instill this kind of confidence in kids. So, while a student might not be meant to shine in the next big Broadway show, they will have the confidence to command the boardroom. To read more about Stage Dreams Youth Theater, check out their website at: stagedreams.net. Fall classes will begin the week of September 10. According to Ms. James, spots are still available, but they fill up fast. Register early, so your child is fully prepared for the first day with their script and CD. Annie Jr. will be performed this autumn.

As a parent, the menu of explorative activities are endless, and every child has his or her own strengths and interests. We also live in a world were, often times, sports gets top billing. Even though not every child is destined to become the next Michael Jordan or Tom Brady, there’s no denying the wholesome life skills that sports can impart. But for those who aren’t athletically inclined, Ms. James sees theater as an activity that offers and teaches the same positive life lessons as sports. NORTH TATUM TIMES • August 2018 • 13

e thought our readers would be interested in information we gleaned from the last Desert Ridge Community Association’s (DRCA) bi-monthly coffee with Terrance Smith, our Community General Manager and Doug Dixon, our longtime President. By the way, both gentlemen, the staff of DRCA and the Community Association Board deserve a huge round of applause from all Desert Ridge residents for their tireless efforts in keeping our community beautiful; and for managing the budget so efficiently that we have not had an increase in our bi-annual HOA dues since 2003. CURRENT KITCHEN DESIGN

TRENDS AND IDEAS By Tom Sertich Kirk Development Company

D

esign trends come and go frequently, so the best idea is to select those designs that work best for you and your family. Since kitchens are the heart of the house most decisions will be made according to lifestyle. Before you finalize your decisions make sure you have done your homework to ensure you’re getting what you are expecting. Below are a few ideas that are currently trending. COLORS White and grey have continued to be popular and this is not expected to change in the near future. Darker wood cabinets have rebounded in kitchens where there is plenty of natural light. TECHNOLOGY Smart kitchens are changing at such a fast rate, it is hard to keep up. New appliances and special features

can be added to most existing kitchens. There is such a wide variety, you will need to make sure your selections work best for your lifestyle. Of course there are those features that make working in the kitchen more fun.

Most custom cabinet shops can either make a new sink cabinet to fit into the existing space or they can customize the existing cabinet to fit your new farm sink. COUNTERTOPS Quartz is still high on the list for most home owners. New colors have been introduced and quartz is not porous which makes it easy for cleanup.

ASK THE POOL EXPERT

DESERT RIDGE POOL SERVICE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS By Cris Hands Owner and Operater of Desert Ridge Pool Service & Repair

Q. What does weekly professional pool service include? A. To begin with, there are a wide range of services offered and needed by the homeowner with a swimming pool. A swimming pool has several systems that work and operate together, and all must be understood. The main services comprise of testing the water, applying chemicals, skimming the pool, emptying the skimmer basket and brushing the stairs and water line. In addition, all pools need pool cleaning systems maintained, filters cleaned and maintenance on a periodic basis including emptying of the pump basket and general pump maintenance.

Q. How much does weekly professional pool service cost? A. As there are a wide range of services to cover, there is also a wide range in pricing. Most customers want weekly full-service which covers everything in the first question. So, let’s assume you have a basic 10,000-gallon pool. Service, when offered by a qualified and insured pool professional, typically begins around a $100 per month and chemicals are usually charged in addition. If you have a larger gallon pool, a spa, or other features you will pay $10 - $30 more each month on average because there is more cleaning time, as well as more equipment to attend to associated with each feature. Filter cleaning is also extra. All the pricing information concerning maintenance and repairs should be discussed and agreed upon upfront.

There are also many other pool specific systems to clean and maintain such as a salt system, spa, water feature, lights, water leveler, debris canisters, water module valves and control systems, timers, and now even remote controllers and apps you can download to control your pool equipment and features.

Q. How do I know if I have a qualified and insured pool professional? A. Ask them what their credentials include. They should be able to show you a certificate of liability as proof of business insurance. There are many educational opportunities to embrace, the

foremost being the National Swimming Pool Foundation’s Certified Pool and Spa Operators Certificate. There are also educational opportunities from the equipment manufacturers, and the Independent Pool & Spa Service Association that offer a wide range of industry specific topics.

Q. Wow, that’s a lot of things to be aware of anything else I didn’t think to ask? A. Well, I would add that you need to decide if you want to do business with a big, somewhat impersonal company that may send a different person into your backyard every week, or would you prefer to do business on a more personal basis with an owner/operator and see the same person in your backyard every week. It’s a service of great value and time savings to the customer! PETS

TRAVELING WITH YOUR PETS? WHAT TO KNOW

D

o your upcoming travel plans include pets? Whether you’re flying to an exciting destination or hitting the road, these suggestions can make the journey easier for animals and humans alike. • Prep your pet: Traveling can prove stressful to animals, so don’t catch your pet off-guard. Before leaving town, practice taking short rides in the car or spending time in a carrier. This will help your pet get used to the experience. If you haven’t already microchipped your pet, this may be a good opportunity to do so. This is also the time to ensure your pet’s collar is up-to-date with your current contact information. • Pack right: Pack plenty of food and fresh water and a sufficient supply of any medications your pet is taking, as getting refills away from home could be difficult. To alleviate anxiety, bring along pet blankets and toys as reminders of home. Also pack a pet-specific first aid kit, which should include non-

stick bandages, adhesive bandages, towels, gauze and your veterinarian’s phone number. • Follow rules: Do your research to ensure you’re following rules along the way and at your destination. Check airline policies, as well as hotel and campsite restrictions and accommodations. Travel across state or international borders requires a health certificate. Some locations require more information and documentation. Give yourself plenty of time to handle these details. Your veterinarian can be a good resource in learning what to expect. To that end, a check-up is also a good idea before a trip, as vaccinations or preventive medications may be needed before traveling. • Safety first: While seatbelts alone can keep a dog from moving about the cabin of the car, they are not your safest option. To help protect pets in a crash, anchor a crate using a seatbelt or other secure means. When flying, opt to keep your pet in the cabin of the plane if possible. Temperatures and air quality in cargo can put a strain on pets. If your animal is too large to fly in the cabin, speak to your veterinarian about what you can do to keep your pet safe and relaxed in-flight.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS Reviewed by A.D. Beal

INCREDIBLES 2

Immediately following the events of the first film, a wealthy businessman asks Elastigirl to help him on a project that could make superheroes legal again. Brad Bird’s follow-up to his 2004 hit is probably the best sequel Pixar has made since Toy Story 3. What’s great is that it avoids what could have been so many obvious points and twists, and instead lets the characters make smart decisions. It rarely forces them to have dumb, outof-character moments just to advance the plot. It also doesn’t talk down to the children viewers by spelling everything out, which leaves us with a film that both old and young can enjoy. As per usual with Pixar, it also features memorable and likable characters as well as beautiful animation. The themes have been seen before in previous Brad Bird films (Ratatouille, Tomorrowland, etc) but for this day and age we are experiencing, it is a good, hopeful message.

SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO

Alejandro Gillick is asked yet again for assistance by FBI Agent Matt Graver to get approval on a war against drug cartels, but the kidnapping of a young girl causes tension between the two as the plan goes wrong. Compared to the first Sicario, Day of the Soldado feels like it belongs in a different film series, as it has more of an action thriller feel, as opposed to the crime drama feel of its predecessor. In doing that, the new film loses a lot of what made the first one interesting, such as the blurred morals. The film is fine on its own, as the action scenes are shot and edited fluently, and Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are once again great in their roles. But turning the former into the hero does not line up with the ruthless assassin shown before, and it contributes to the generic feeling of the film. It’s a brutal film with some interesting ideas but sadly doesn’t really go anywhere with them.

THE FIRST PURGE

After achieving power in the United States, the NFAA sets up an experiment in Staten Island that the population refers to as “The Purge”. To director Gerard McMurray’s credit, he brings a style to The First Purge that does make it stand out from the previous films, with a more synth-based score and darker (both literally and figuratively) look to the film. Lex Scott Davis and Y’Lan Noel are the new leads in the film, and they both do a good job with their characters, as they are not superheroes but can still be tough yet likable. Throughout the film as a whole, there are some strange editing choices (including a fade to black in the middle of a fight scene) and an overuse of hip-hop music that sucks away a lot of the tension. The script (written by series creator James DeMonaco) also falls into many horror film traps and clichés. As for the storylines politics, I appreciate how they continue to be open with their messages. Strangely and unfortunately however, I don’t think they went all the way with some aspects, such as the military sending in troops to contribute more killings. There is a lot that could be done with the commentary, but it feels like a step back from the previous film.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

A man in Oakland sees his life change in strange ways after getting work as a telemarketer. There’s no easy way to describe the greatness that is Sorry to Bother You, you just need to experience it for yourself. But if I must, here we have a film with a cast of so many talented actors (Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson and Armie Hammer to name a few) offering different POV’s for their characters in their fantastic performances. You have humor that can be both subtle and blatant in its messages, and it always works. There is also loads of insane imagery that will leave you terrified or laughing. That should be enough to convince you to see it, right?
