After recent reports that CrackerJax Family Fun & Sports Park was sold to billionaire George Kurtz in a $55.5 million deal, CrackerJax management released a statement on the @CrackerJaxFunPark Facebook page and their website stating that the 30-year-old business was not sold, only the land that the amusement park operates on. “CrackerJax Family Fun & Sports Park Business has not been sold. We are open for business and continue to operate under the same ownership that has been proudly serving the Valley for 30 years,” says the statement from management. “Only the land on which CrackerJax is built has been sold so we simply have a new landlord. We are grateful to the support we are seeing from long time CrackerJax fans and people who have yet to experience what we have to offer. This gives us all a wonderful opportunity to relive those memories with our families or come make some brandnew ones!” crackerjax.com

Colorado River Water Shortage Caused by Climate Change Requires Phoenicians To Adapt Information and Photo Courtesy of Phoenix Water Services AT A RECENT BRIEFING, OFFICIALS WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES, AND CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT DELIVERED A STARK ASSESSMENT OF THE COLORADO RIVER. As impacts of climate change persist, more significant Colorado River cuts are likely to occur. Those reductions will impact the amount of Colorado River water available to Phoenix and other central Arizona municipalities, farmers, and tribes. Central Arizona is currently experiencing the first-ever declared shortage on the Colorado River. “Three things are true about this situation: first, it is serious. Second, it will require the city to think differently, and plan differently, for how we use water. Third, we need to enlist the people of Phoenix as our partners in the hard work ahead,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Researchers are serious when they tell us this megadrought is the worst in at least 1,200 years. The more we can encourage people and businesses to think creatively about how to reduce water consumption now, the better off we will be.”
everyone understands that as we adapt to a hotter, drier future, efficient water use will be essential for maintaining the quality of life we have become accustomed to in the desert.” Residential consumption makes up approximately 70% of water use in Phoenix. With just a little effort, every Phoenix Water customer can easily reduce their water use by 1% to 5%, saving millions of gallons of water every year. HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOMES AND BUSINESSES: • Do not overwater landscaping and use a smart irrigation controller to reduce outdoor water use. Text WHENTOWATER to 33222 for simple monthly reminders to keep your watering on track. • Find and fix leaks inside and outside. • Know the optimal amount of water to use in your home with the Water Usage Calculator. • Choose xeriscape by removing or reducing grass lawns and planting native or desert adapted trees, shrubs, and groundcover that require little water once established. • Upgrade to water-saving toilets and a low water use dishwasher and washing machine. • Cover swimming pools to reduce evaporation.
While asking residents and businesses to do their part, the city is increasing its conservation outreach effort. For example, the Phoenix Water Conservation team expanded its homeowner’s associations outdoor water efficiency program to reach more neighborhoods. After meeting with just six associations, the Water Conservation team identified a potential for more than 20 million gallons per year of savings – enough water to supply 184 families for a year. As more HOAs participate, Phoenix expects even more water savings. The city has worked hard to develop a sustainable water supply and has been designated by the state as having a 100-year assured water supply. In addition, Phoenix recycles nearly all its wastewater, delivering it for use in agriculture, energy production, urban irrigation, aquifer recharge, and riparian wetland maintenance. Phoenix will continue to plan, invest and conserve to ensure a sustainable future while providing safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers without interruption. Additionally, the city will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River as we strive to become the most sustainable desert city in the world. To learn more, visit phoenix.gov/waterservices.
Over the course of decades, Phoenix developed a robust and diverse water resource portfolio with multiple sources and contingency supplies to provide safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers. The Colorado River currently supplies 40% of the water Phoenix uses. “The Colorado River shortage is coming sooner than anticipated,” says Phoenix Water Services Director Troy Hayes. “But all the planning and investment in infrastructure that we have done has put the city in a good place to manage the challenging conditions.” The city has invested in infrastructure and underground water storage, and has been a strong pioneer in water conservation in anticipation of a Colorado River shortage. Yet, as the drought intensifies, the city must continue to innovate new, proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River, which is over-allocated and in decline due to climate change. The city is prepared to implement additional actions, including those described in its Drought Management Plan. “Our customers have always been our partners in conservation, and we need that more than ever now,” says City of Phoenix Water Resources Management Advisor Cynthia Campbell. “It is imperative that 8 • June/July 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

Greater Phoenix Unemployment Rate Falls Below 3% By Eric Jay Toll THE UNADJUSTED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN GREATER PHOENIX RECENTLY DROPPED TO 2.4 PERCENT, DOWN NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF A POINT FROM FEBRUARY’S 3.1 PERCENT AND HALF OF LAST YEAR’S 5.4 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN MARCH. Robust hiring brought the Phoenix metro workforce to
nearly 2.5 million people in March, up 110,800 from March last year. (Editor’s note: March data is the latest information available as of press time.) Hospitality (up 17,600 jobs in year-over-year comparisons) and retail (up 14,400 jobs in March 2022 over March 2021) showed strong gains recovering to nearly pre-pandemic levels. The professional, scientific,
and technical sectors continued a strong hiring trend, remaining among the top three industries for the fourth month in a row, adding 11,100 new hires in March over last year. Nearly all the reported professional, technical and scientific hires were in Greater Phoenix this past year. Healthcare hiring was fourth with 9,100 new hires. Manufacturing added more jobs than construction, with 5,400 new hires on the production lines compared to 4,000 building new developments in year-over-year job growth. Arizona saw its unemployment rate continue to come in below the U.S. rate, a 3.3 adjusted unemployment rate in Arizona, compared to the national 3.6 rate. Most hiring elsewhere in the state was in the retail, construction, healthcare, and government sectors. Greater Phoenix continues its gains in the advanced industry sectors: technology, bioscience healthcare, manufacturing, and business and financial services. In the four advanced industries, Greater Phoenix has added 130,900 advanced industry jobs since April 2020, the first month in which the pandemic affected employment, which account for more than half of all new jobs since the beginning of the pandemic.

Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS. According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water. Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies. PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission. “During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa. “While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot
take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.” Several municipalities have created partnerships with the Mission, bringing relief to the streets in the Mission’s Hope Coach vehicles to distribute water, toiletries, and case management services. “Anything helps in this undertaking to save and change lives, whether it’s through a monetary donation, dropping off a case of water or starting a water drive,” says Brissa. “This is so much more than a handout of water. This is arming people with the tools to change their lives and move out of harm’s way.” More information about the 10th annual Code:Red initiative can be found at phoenixrescuemission.org/codered. Food, water, and all other heat-relief donations can be dropped off at the Mission’s Donation Warehouse, located at 2515 N. 34th Drive in Phoenix. The Mission is also in need of volunteers to help distribute vital, nutritious food to families in need at its Hope for Hunger Food Bank. For more information on what to donate or to start a Code:Red drive, contact gikhelp@ phxmission.org or call 602-346-3347.

City News Valley Residents Team Up to Encourage The State to Ban Declawing Cats WHILE IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, THERE ARE CAT OWNERS WHO STILL ASK VETS TO DECLAW THEIR CATS, WHICH IS AN AMPUTATION OF THE CAT’S “FINGERS AND TOES.” It is illegal in the state of New York and
banned in 40 countries worldwide. According to many experts, it’s extremely painful to cats and they never fully recover. Several Valley residents are spearheading an effort to ban the practice in the state of Arizona so that no additional cats suffer from this surgical procedure. One such person is Kallie Rose. “When I found out that declawing cats was still legal in Arizona, I knew I had to step up and take a stand. All our pets are precious, but no other species are subjected to the amputation that cats still endure. While many vets refuse to perform this barbaric surgery, it is still possible to get it done,” Rose says. “It’s imperative that we prevent additional suffering.” Nonprofit organization The Paw Project is heading up a nationwide effort, state by state, to make declawing cats illegal. For more than two decades, they have been committed to educating the public, legislators and veterinarians about
how this potentially crippling surgical procedure can harm a cat’s physical health and result in disturbing behavioral changes. Unsuspecting cat guardians are often unaware that declawing is an amputation of a cat’s toes at the last joint. They do not realize that negative behavioral and health changes caused by declawing can be irreversible and permanent; in effect, trading one set of problems for another.
Dr. Steven Hansen, DVM provided testimony at the Committee hearing. The bill must pass both houses of the legislature and be signed by the governor before becoming law. Unfortunately, there is opposition to the bill. “It’s hard to believe that anyone would oppose this bill,” said Shah, who is also an ER doctor and familiar with the painful procedure. “In my mind, there’s no way to rationalize allowing an animal to suffer in this way.”
Arizona legislators are reaching across “It’s time we get this anti-declaw bill the aisles to move AZ Anti-Declaw Bill, passed. We have the support of veterinarHB2014 (formerly HB2224), all the way to Governor Ducey for signature before ians such as VCA Animal Hospital and year end. It has already unanimously Banfield Pet Hospital who have already passed the Arizona Senate Commerce banned the practice and our local animal Committee. The bill, which would rescue organizations like the Arizona prohibit non-therapeutic declawing, Humane Society,” Rose adds. “More than was authored by State Representative 70% of people polled are in favor of makAmish Shah, MD (D - Phoenix) and ing declawing illegal; the additional 30% State Representative John Kavanagh (R probably just need to be educated, which - Fountain Hills). Are We Heading Toward a Balanced Real Estate Market? A Local Expert Weighs In. By Holly Henbest, Realtor
W
e are starting to see more trends that indicate we are heading toward a balanced market.
Another trend we are seeing is a shift in available inventory with our luxury market showing the biggest increase in inventory. Homes priced between $1.5 and $2 million increased in inventory by 86% from April to May. Homes under $400,000 remain tight on availability with only a 1% increase in inventory from April to May. The population of buyers has also been changing a bit. Buyers purchasing property as a primary residence have declined almost 20% since last year (April 2021 to April 2022). Second home or vacation home purchases have declined about 8% in the same period. On the other hand, investment property purchases (homes intended to be rentals) have increased almost 9%. This population mix is interesting for a few reasons. People who want to purchase a primary residence may need to sell their current home to be able to afford their next home. Many people who want to move are wary their home may sell quickly, leaving them little time to select their replacement property. With an increase in inventory on the horizon, sellers may find more comfort in selling their home, knowing they will have more options of what they can buy. With the increase of investor purchases, the indication is that investors want to purchase sooner than later as prices are expected to continue to rise, although at a much more modest rate. There is also an expectation that the demand for rental homes will rise for a few reasons. As interest rates increase, some buyers will be putting their purchase plans on hold as they can no longer afford what they were hoping to buy, so we’ll have people remaining in rental properties for longer than desired. Our job market also remains strong with new job growth, which means more relocation and more demand for rental homes. Whenever we start to talk about a shift or change in the market, it seems the immediate reaction is concern that myhyperlocalnews.com

DISCOUNT! home prices may drop, but instead there are reasons to be optimistic. My personal take is that we’ll see prices flatten as a reaction to the increased interest rates and values in our market will stabilize. Although the signs of a shift continue, we are still awhile away from balance. This remains a seller’s market, but it’s great to see added inventory and more choices for buyers. While the supply and demand imbalance heads in the direction of balance, we are seeing that home prices continue to rise, though at a much slower and modest rate than we’ve seen over the last year. The Greater Phoenix area real estate market remains strong with several key factors that remain in place. We are the number one relocation destination in the country due to the climate, our job opportunities increasing, the cost of living remaining relatively low compared to other parts of the country, and we recently saw that Arizona had eight of the 10 most recovered cities in America from the pandemic. Arizona continues to draw relocation buyers, second home buyers, and retirement buyers. The last year has been full of crazy headlines, recordbreaking sales, and stories. That said, I believe it’s healthy to see things slow down a bit. While it’s great to see our home values increase, it’s beneficial to see the pace of the increase slow down. The reality is that we can’t sustain rapid paced growth for the long haul, so it’s good to see things head toward normalization. Our normal market has always been a great market too. For instance, Days on Market (the number of days a home is listed for sale before going under contract) has surpassed 20 days for the first time this year. In January it was at 19, then dipped to about 16 in March, and then 24 in May. Although the number of days on market is increasing, we won’t be considered a balanced market until we see the days on market somewhere between 120-135.

Oceans of Possibilities: Maricopa County Reads’ 2022 Summer Reading Program Begins
S
ixty-five libraries across the county are gearing up for Summer Reading as Maricopa County Reads opens June 1 with a community goal of 50 million minutes read. Maricopa County Reads is one of the county’s largest literacy efforts and plays a vital role in
reducing learning loss while transitioning between school years. “Building a community of readers means we are building a community of problem solvers, collaborators, and lifelong learners,” says Bill Gates, Chairman of the
Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 1. “The Summer Reading program is just one way to continue building an even brighter future for Maricopa County.” Participants earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks. Additional points are earned for attending in-person and virtual events hosted by librarians and local performers, completing summer reading challenges, and participating in community experiences to find secret codes while exploring Maricopa County. Prizes vary based on the number of points readers achieve. Readers who achieve 1,000 points can choose a free book for their home library or to donate to a local Head Start classroom. The theme of this year’s program is “Oceans of Possibilities,” encouraging readers of all ages to explore the many stories from under the sea.
The primary goal of the program is to interrupt the summer slide, the common term given to the learning loss experienced by children while transitioning between school years. The secondary aim of the program is to promote early literacy among pre-readers and their families during the summer months. The Maricopa County Reads summer reading program began in the summer of 2013. It has continued to grow, and now hosts 65 public, tribal and military base libraries within Maricopa County. More than 80,000 children, teens, and adults participate in the program annually. The program runs through August 1 and all Phoenix Public Library locations are participating. The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer By Donna Throckmorton
T
he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics. One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library. Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general. In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.
Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day. It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency. Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.
A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier. Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today! Remember, as Dr. Suess wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” To learn more, visit azsos.libguides.com/ azsummerlibrary. Donna Throckmorton is an Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records Library Services Consultant.
A summer without reading can set students back, with the average student losing 17-34% of the prior year’s learning gains during summer break. Still, according to a report from the White House, reading just five books over the summer can help prevent learning loss.

IT’S SOLAR SEASON! Locally Owned Sunsolar Solutions Continues to Shine
By Michelle Talsma Everson
S
ummer is here, which Michael O’Donnell, vice president of sales and co-owner at Sunsolar Solutions, affectionately calls, “Solar Season.” With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year though, Valley residents are switching to solar energy this summer and all year-round. This is evident in the continued growth of the locally owned solar power company. Since its start in 2015, Sunsolar Solutions has helped over 8,300 homeowners go solar across the state and hired more than 115 local employees (not including local contractors!). “We are proud to have brought more than 100 new green jobs to the Valley,” says Val Berechet, president of Sunsolar Solutions. “We are right here, in your backyard. We are a homegrown company that has been doing business in the Valley—and growing—for seven years.” In addition to Berechet and O’Donnell, Sunsolar Solutions is also lead by Troy Dinbokowitz. Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity through solar panels. With hundreds of sunny days each year, the Valley of the Sun is literally the perfect place for those considering supplementing some of their energy usage with solar power. “Our innovative solar solutions and technology works to power your entire home with clean, renewable 18 • June/July 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
energy – all from just the sun,” according to the company. “With each solar panel, you’ll be combatting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing your fossil fuel dependency while saving up to 95 percent on your electricity bill… By investing in a solar system today, you’ll be cultivating a brighter tomorrow.” “We have a deep understanding of the local market and local utilities,” Berechet explains. “We are an experienced local company and take care of everything from start to finish.”
“
SOME BENEFITS OF GOING SOLAR WITH SUNSOLAR SOLUTIONS INCLUDE: • Increase your property value. • No upfront costs. • Customers can save up to 95% off of their electric bill. • Protection against inflation and energy cost increases from the electric company. • Increasing the property value. • Earning a great return on your investment. • Going green. • Providing clean, reliable energy.
By helping thousands of Arizona households switch to solar energy, Berechet shares how Sunsolar Solutions is making an impressive green impact on the environment. “The latest statistics show that, so far, we’ve helped to reduce an estimated 6.8 million tons of CO2 emissions. This reduction is the equivalent of 16.2 million trees planted. We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!”

We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!” “Doing business right and providing quality customer experience—plus referrals and good online reviews—has paid dividends in how much we’ve grown,” Berechet explains. “It’s led to more customers and, thanks to their business, more employees.” Because of their impressive growth, Sunsolar Solutions moved into a 19,000 square foot installation center and a 2,500 square foot sales space just last year, adding to the 3,000 square foot administrative office they occupied prior. What makes Sunsolar Solutions stand out among other solar companies that locals could work with? O’Donnell shares that it has to do with how their company provides quality service and transparency, ensuring the customer has the correct expectations. “Eighty percent of solar companies don’t actually install the solar panels that they sell you,” he explains. “We do it all—sales and installation. We also always provide the total cost to customers so they know what to expect. And, if we can, we provide multiple design options for them to choose from, so they can pick which one works best for their budget. Of course, our goal is always to get their electric bill down to zero.” “Because we are local and hands-on, we can handle every aspect of installation and walk the customer through the entire process,” O’Donnell continues. Sunsolar Solutions’ goal, even if they don’t make a sale, is to educate customers and those interested in solar. They always provide their sales reps with ongoing education and the tools they need to make an honest sale and provide all the facts when meeting potential solar panel owners. “This is a great company to work with,” says Teresa R., a Sunsolar customer. “I had another family member buy from another company more than a month before

me and they’re still waiting. Mine is completed and running.” “I had Sunsolar Solutions do my solar install and it has been awesome,” says Curtis, another recent customer. “They did extremely good work and kept me up to date as to what was going on all along the way. They even ensured everything was painted to match!” “Sunsolar Solutions doesn’t just come out once, install panels, and leave,” O’Donnell shares. “When you work with us, not only do we do everything, but it’s the beginning of a 25-year relationship. We provide assurance, maintenance, warranties, and can always come to help in-person as we’re local.” For those who are interested in investing in solar power, Sunsolar Solutions’ team shares that now is the time. O’Donnell explains that there is a deadline for APS customers to switch to solar to still be grandfathered into their current solar buyback program—which is going down 10 percent, meaning less energy savings for
solar power customers. But those who act before the August 31 deadline will be able to be grandfathered in to the current program. Whether a new customer signs up this summer or another time, the Sunsolar team shares that they are grateful for their continued growth. “We’re doing well because we’re doing good for the community and the environment,” Berechet says. “We are excited for today and what the future holds.” “Thanks to community support and our success, we’ve really made an impact on both the economy and environment,” O’Donnell says. “Every solar system that we install really moves the needle in the right direction for saving money for that family but also a positive impact on the economy and environment.” To learn more and inquire about a free consultation, visit sunsolarsolutions.com or call 623-562-9009. The AIAAA gives this award to only one athletic director in each conference. “Being an athletic director has given me the opportunity to develop relationships with the Shadow Mountain community and other athletic administrators around the state,” says Safcik. The award came at a perfect time as Safcik just retired at the end of the school year after 25 years of service at PVSchools, 13 of which were as an athletic director. Ascend Academy of Arizona Offers Quality Programming to Adults with Disabilities Photos Courtesy of Ascend Academy of Arizona
A
scend Academy of Arizona opened in December 2020 because CEO Jodi Dougan saw the need for a safe place for adults with disabilities to go during the day that is inclusive and supportive. “Arizona really needed a program that supported individuals with the same functioning level to go to continue their learning and give them meaning and purpose,” Dougan says.
“Ascend Academy is a boutique program catering to higher functioning non-violent adults with special needs,” she continues. “Our goal is to provide a loving and healthy environment that generates feelings of inclusiveness, accomplishment, and self-worth. Our services are provided in a fun, loving and nurturing way using all available modern innovations to prepare members [program participants] to not only thrive in the environment around them, but to enjoy all their community has to offer.” The day program provides transportation to and from the program where participants partake in a variety of experiences including outings, volunteer opportunities, science, arts and crafts, exercise programs, life skills, gardening, games, teaching, team leadership, and socializations. “Our goal is building friendships and becoming part of an extended family,” Dougan says. With an extensive background in patient care, nursing, and nonprofits, Dougan leads the charge at Ascend Academy alongside her experienced staff. It’s a myhyperlocalnews.com

“Ascend Academy aspires to become an example of how services can be delivered to members in a fun and individualized way that promotes access to the community in terms of leisure and vocational opportunities,” she says. Local resident Ben is the father of Alex, age 34, who has Down’s syndrome and attends Ascend Academy. “In my opinion, the two main skills levels that Ascend Academy has drastically improved with Alex would be cognitive and her socialization skills. Ascend staff works with Alex on her learning skills daily to a point now where Alex can write in a daily journal on her events at Ascend. Before Ascend, her skill level was limited to writing her name. The socialization includes weekly community events. To see Alex’s eyes light up when she shows me pictures of her weekly travels is awesome.”
Dougan shares that she has some big plans for the future of Ascend Academy and is excited for future growth. She notes that parents or guardians who are interested in Ascend Academy’s programming can reach out for more info. All programming is geared toward the individual member and their family’s needs. “I believe that every person should enjoy a life with purpose and members should be enabled to reach their maximum potential,” Dougan says. Ascend Academy of Arizona is located at 4150 W. Peoria Avenue, Suite 125, in Phoenix. Transportation is offered to and from programming for members. To learn more, visit ascend-academy.com or call 602-688-9862. This content is sponsored by Ascend Academy of Arizona.
Nancy’s daughter Tressa is also a member at Ascend Academy. “Tressa is highly functional, a go getter and a modern-day socialite,” Nancy explains. “However, I have spent years fighting with the system and encouraging higher expectations from the programs Tressa has been involved in throughout her life. This is the first program that sees and expects Tressa to grow to her fullest potential, knowing she can accomplish anything. It may take a little longer and navigate through a different avenue, but she can and will. This attitude and vision are what excite me about Ascend Academy. Tressa has grown exponentially in social skills, organization, seeing a bigger picture, staying focused, getting excited over her creativity, and is a better communicator.”

How to Stay Healthy During Summer Travel By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
I
t’s summertime! We are all ready to get back to traveling and enjoying our summer. Of course, it is important to remain healthy while traveling. Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family healthy while you enjoy those well-deserved vacations. IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT: I always travel with the immune system essentials. I bring Vitamin C and Vitamin D for general support. This is great to take the days leading up to travel or daily to enhance the immune response. I also like to bring elderberry for the entire family. Elderberry is an herb that is great for supporting and boosting the immune system. You can take it daily for immune maintenance.
least half your weight in ounces each day. I will often suggest adding electrolytes while traveling too. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated while traveling. DIGESTION: I have many patients who struggle with constipation and traveling does not help. Our diets are usually different while traveling and water intake is often lower. These two things alone can contribute to constipation. A naturopathic physician can work with you prior to your vacation to help support the gastrointestinal tract to find the root cause of constipation or provide helpful tips to ensure regularity while traveling.
STRESS: The goal of vacation is to leave the stress behind, but sometimes traveling can be stressful. If possible, plan some “down time” while on vacation to recuperate and relax. You can also work with your naturopathic prior to traveling to support those stress hormones prior to a big trip. Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.
NUTRITION: Food is one of the most exciting parts of a vacation and I love exploring new places to eat and trying new foods. Often, we go off our regular eating habits while on vacation. It can be helpful to find a place to stay that has a kitchen so you can plan to make a few meals. I always recommend healthy road trip snacks for those long trips. Trail mix, fruit, and healthy snack bars are always a great idea. If you have snacks packed, you are less likely to stop at a convenience store and grab those less healthy snacks. STAY ACTIVE: If you have a long flight, make sure to get up at least once per hour and walk a bit for better circulation. Find fun family activities that include hiking and exploring. Take a nice long walk after a big meal. If on a long road trip, take breaks at a park or an area where everyone in the car can enjoy some movement. HYDRATION: When we travel, our water intake typically decreases. We do not want the burden of having to stop so frequently to use the bathroom. When we get dehydrated, we can have more inflammation in the body. It is important to drink at

How A Revocable Trust Benefits You and Your Family By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
T
he Revocable Living Trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. The assets you worked and saved to accumulate go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee, and you are the only beneficiary of the assets. If you can’t take care of your treasures (manage your finances), either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign, and record a deed to the house. In the deed John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. The same thing happens with your financial accounts.
Once your Trust is in place, you continue as always to be the manager of your financial affairs. You manage your assets, receive the income, write checks, make deposits, pay bills, and buy and sell property. You have full control. But if you can no longer manage your financial affairs, either because of death or incapacity, your Trust contains the instructions for who is in charge – the designation of your successor trustee. The Trust tells the successor trustee how they are to manage the trust assets and distribute money for your benefit if you are incapacitated. The Trust also contains your instructions for administering your assets and distributing them to your beneficiaries at death. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, when a client has become incapacitated or passed away, their designated successor trustee certainly notices the difference. The trust results in a much easier transition for them to take care of financial affairs for the incapacitated person, and to manage and distribute the assets after death.

Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke. 28 • June/July 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-
breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace. “Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.
