THE LATEST SCOOP ON SCOTTSDALE 101 SCOTTSDALE 101 – APTLY NAMED FOR ITS LOCATION OFF SCOTTSDALE ROAD AND THE LOOP 101 – IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SPOTS FOR SHOPPING, DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT IN THE NORTH VALLEY. Boasting plenty of entertainment options, dozens of specialty shops, familiar big box stores and restaurants to satisfy any craving, it’s no wonder this mixed-use complex is in high demand. Under the direction of YAM Properties, the real estate company owned by well-known businessman Bob Parsons, the center has enjoyed steady growth. All businesses in Scottsdale 101 are, of course, adhering to heightened sanitation and other preventative measures to do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Most recently, popular franchise Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers opened in Scottsdale 101 and Goldfish Swim School is set to open this fall. The premier learn-to-swim facility is designed for children, ages 4 months to 12 years, to gain confidence and water safety through play-based learning. Other recent openings have included a diverse mix of tasty restaurants and services such as Hot and Juicy Crawfish, Oralast Health and Wellness Oral Pathology Clinic, and Camp
Bow Wow, an all-day dog daycare and boarding facility.
The popular Arizona gym, EOS Fitness, also opened a 37,000-square-foot facility featuring state-of-the-art equipment, personal training services, group fitness classes and a cycling studio. There is even more expansion on the horizon including a Starbucks drivethrough, slated to open its doors early next year. In addition to the new openings, several tenants have implemented remodels and rebranding efforts within the past year. While PINO, a quick-serve Italian eatery, added a new wine bar to its Scottsdale 101 location, the popular breakfast joint previously known as N’Counter, underwent a rebrand and is now Daily Jam. In total, Scottsdale 101 is home to more than 50 diverse businesses including C2 Tactical, Escape Room 101, Cien Agaves and Bowlero, a 32-lane bowling alley complete with a restaurant, bar and arcade. And, of course, the iconic Harkins Theaters Cine Capri. This relocated, reincarnation of a classic Phoenix attraction continues to draw multitudes of moviegoers every night of the week. ARIZONA ENRICHMENT CENTERS STILL OPEN TO LOCAL FAMILIES THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED MANY AREAS OF LIFE—CHILD CARE IN PARTICULAR BEING ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT FOR MANY LOCAL FAMILIES. Back in April, Governor Doug Ducey announced the official launch of Arizona Enrichment Centers to offer child care for the children of first responders, critical health care workers, and essential public sector workers, including child safety workers. In May, the program expanded to offer prioritized child care for the children of grocery store employees and food bank workers. The program will continue to offer prioritized care and scholarships to eligible families through the end of July. The initiative was made possible thanks to a broad network of child care providers and numerous state agencies, including the Arizona Departments of Education, Health Services, Administration, Economic Security, First Things First, and the Government Transformation Office. “Arizona is coming together to serve our frontline workers serving all of us,” Governor Ducey says. “Through support including child care assistance and financial resources, we can help alleviate some of the stress and concerns that families serving on the frontlines are facing. I’m grateful to Superintendent Hoffman and all the nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations for partnering with us to make these resources available.” “This initiative is critically important for the children and families of our first responders, health care workers, and other essential emergency personnel,” says Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman. “I’m grateful for everyone that is stepping up to serve these families during this difficult time.” northtatumtimes.com
About the Enrichment Centers The state is working with Arizona Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R), a nonprofit organization that offers referrals to child care centers, to provide access to licensed child care facilities. The state is also working with local nonprofit, education, and faith organizations to provide families with additional resources and care options when licensed child care is not available. All child care sites follow the CDC Guidance for Schools and Childcare Programs, the ADHS Childcare Facility COVID-19 Guidance, as well as guidance issued by local public health departments. As of press time, 426 providers have registered as Enrichment Centers in 52 cities across the state; 3,318 families of critical health care and essential public sector workers have qualified for priority child care; and 2,321 families have qualified for a child care scholarship. Those eligible for child care through an Enrichment Center can register for priority child care eligibility and financial support by visiting arizonaenrichmentcenters.az.gov. A full list of approved child care facilities is also listed on the website and scholarships are available through the end of July. Questions can be e-mailed to AZEnrichmentCenters@az.gov.
Risk Tolerance – Time to Change? By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor

It influences our thoughts around risk and ability to manage emotions around risk. When we think about risk, we are really considering the impact of how much are we willing to accept when markets are falling. However, you may want to think about it in two ways. The first is how much are you willing to accept in annual performance reporting. The second is how much are you willing to accept in market corrections. History (1948 – 2018) shows us that the markets experience about three 5% declines per year, one 10% decline about every year, one 15% decline roughly every four years, and a 20% decline

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUMMER READING, NOW MORE THAN EVER
By Michelle Talsma Everson
A
recent study of children in the third to fifth grades showed that students lost an average of 20 percent of their school year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school year gains in math during summer break, according to Scholastic.com. With this school year already disrupted due to COVID-19, experts note that now, more than ever before, it’s crucial to encourage students of all ages to read during the summer.
Reading List website at readacrossamerica.org/kids-summer-reading-list. Here, families can find an array of reading resources, book recommendations, and parenting tips. Some ideas include joining the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, where you receive digital rewards, or the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, where young readers can earn a free book after reading eight books.
One local resource for busy families is the Read On Arizona website at readonarizona.org. On the website, you can use the “Find a Book” tool to find books that meet your child’s interest and reading level; use a reading log to track time spent reading; and find other helpful educational resources.
What can parents do to help reverse the “Summer Slide” (when children lose their reading and math skills over the summer)? Scholastic.com recommends that parents allow children to read the books they’re most interested in; make time for “smart play,” such as games and puzzles; allow kids to use their imagination through imaginative play such as LEGOs, etc.; and join a summer reading program at your local library.

LOCAL SCHOOLS RECEIVES THE ADL NO PLACE FOR HATE DESIGNATION
E
agle Ridge Elementary School, Explorer Middle School, Greenway Middle School, and Vista Verde Middle School have received the Anti-Defamation League® No Place for Hate® designation for creating safe and respectful learning environments and bringing awareness to issues of bullying and bias throughout the 2019-2020 school year. Each school has taken its own approach to implement and instill the values of the No Place for Hate motto in students and staff members.

Register for the Summer Reading Game at phoenixpublic.org. Phoenix residents can also go to read20az.com and participate, the goal being building the habit of reading 20 minutes a day. Even more fun? Make it a family activity as kids, teens and adults can all participate.
Explorer Middle School At Explorer Middle School, the No Place for Hate motto challenged the staff to create social/emotional learning opportunities throughout the year that promote tolerance and acceptance. For example, through the “mix-it-up” event at lunch, students were challenged to sit at a table with seven of their peers, picked at random,
and carry out a conversation with them using conversation starters. This provided an opportunity for Explorer students to get to know other students that might not normally be in their social circles.
“The No Place for Hate designation is a great accomplishment for our school as we continue to provide a positive, inclusive learning environment for all of our students,” says Kyle Shappee, principal at Explorer Middle School. About ADL No Place for Hate ADL’s anti-bias, allyship, and bullying prevention programs assist PreK12 grade educators and students in understanding and challenging bias, building ally behaviors, and creating a climate of respect. No Place for Hate guides schools toward fostering and maintaining a positive school climate through campus-wide activities, student leadership, and community involvement. northtatumtimes.com

CCUSD AND THE COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER DURING UNPRECEDENTED TIMES
T
he COVID-19 pandemic has certainly allowed us all to do things differently and adapt our lifestyles and habits, whether we wanted to or not. In the Cave Creek Unified District (CCUSD), we started adapting in mid-March when Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman closed all Arizona public schools. Our teaching and learning department and our principals, along with lead teachers, worked tirelessly to make sure that after our spring break, our students transitioned seamlessly to virtual schools rather than our typical brick and mortar classrooms. To assist families with technology needs, CCUSD loaned out 1,044 Chromebooks and 15 hotspots so that students would have the tools to continue their studies at home. I could not be prouder of the quick but thorough work our staff produced to make all this happen, including our technology department that continues to man the help desk.
Closed schools also meant that our students who receive meal assistance would still need to have meals during the week. Our child nutrition department wrote for a state waiver to allow CCUSD to feed any child in the community under 18 years old by receiving meals distributed daily in front of Cactus Shadows High School. In addition, Subway owner, Jeff Weckstein, donated Subway sandwiches for the first three weeks of the closure. Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek is providing 70 family meals per week for those needing assistance, jumpstarted with a $2,000 donation from Carefree Kiwanis and private donations from the community, including out-of-state donors. In addition, some community members have generously donated their stimulus checks to support our food distribution. Carefree Floors in Cave Creek donated carpet cleaning for the district buildings and Mission Grove Church donated ten $100 gift cards for staff needing
support. An anonymous donor gave $10,000 to support repairs and purchase of Chromebooks that students use for their lessons. We are grateful for such strong support despite being a relatively small community.
Our schools know that our students are missing their classmates and teachers, and our staff are missing the smiles and hugs from our students. Some of our elementary schools have hosted “car parades” where our teachers stand in the parking lot six feet apart with their masks on and our families drive through with signs, balloons and banners on their vehicles. At Black Mountain Elementary School, their spring musical, “Annie,” was cancelled so they put together a virtual production so everyone could still enjoy the performance. Our eighth graders and high school seniors have received signs for their front yards to congratulate them and both So-
noran Trails Middle School and Cactus Shadows High School have a display wall where promoting or graduating students can post pictures for a group collage. Our CCUSD social media has been highlighting individual CSHS seniors with a picture and what their plans are post-high school. Above all, we cannot change the unprecedented situation the pandemic has caused, but like all situations, it is how we choose to handle things that makes us resilient and strong.
FREE ALL-DAY Kindergarten Our five A+ elementary schools –each with its own signature curriculum – offer FREE All-Day Kindergarten and Preschool at each location. Cave Creek Unified School District is inspiring excellence in young minds. CONTACT US TODAY TO LEARN MORE!

The Importance of Estate Planning with a Professional ATTORNEY LIBBY BANKS HELPS LOCALS PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
A
By Michelle Talsma Everson
ttorney Libby Banks is passionate about a unique area of law—so passionate in fact, it’s what she focuses on exclusively. Banks’ area of expertise is estate planning, probate and trust administration. Essentially, she helps clients of all ages plan for what happens to their estates if they are incapacitated or after they pass away. It’s an important topic that many may not realize impacts not only them but their loved ones as well. “I’ve been an attorney for many years, and about 10 years ago, I began working with another attorney who specialized in the big probate fights – fights over the money when there is no will or no valid estate plan,” Banks explains. “I saw families fall apart when the fight escalated and the court got involved through the probate process [a court-supervised process of authenticating and administering an estate or a last will and testament]. I wanted to go into the preventative side. For the past eight years, it’s all that I’ve done.” “I value family above almost everything, and these cases broke my heart,” she adds. “I decided to go into estate planning to help people avoid these painful, unnecessary family fights.”
10 • June/July 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
northtatumtimes.com
Banks says that estate planning is something that you can do at any age, once you’re over 18, and in any financial situation. “You need to think of what your current financial and life situation is,” she says. “For example, if you have children, you not only need to plan financially, but for guardianship of your children as well.” Estate planning, she explains, is all about selecting someone to make sure your estate is managed properly and for planning how you will distribute your assets as well. The goal is to create a plan, then keep it updated so it grows with you—for example, your estate plan would look different if you’re single with no children then 10 years later when you’re married with a child. What are some downsides to not planning? There are many, Banks shares, including unforeseen consequences for, say, blended families. Essentially, a sound estate plan helps you to advocate for your loved ones and makes sure that your wishes are respected. “Something to keep in mind, too, is that an estate plan names the right person to make decisions for you if you’re incapacitated; it’s not just about planning for when you pass away,” she adds. One misconception about estate planning is that some may try to do it themselves or go to attorneys who do not specialize in the practice. Like all important, vital tasks though, Banks says it’s best to leave something this crucial to a professional. “If you don’t do the job right and you don’t know you’ve made a mistake, it may well be too late before you – or more likely, your family – finds out,” she explains. “Without proper estate planning, your family may end up in court. If you are alive and incapacitated, they may be required to take you to court to declare you unable to handle your affairs and appoint a guardian and conservator. That is a public proceeding. If you are deceased, they may have to file a probate to transfer your property to your heirs. If you left your assets to minor children, the court will be involved in the expenditures until northtatumtimes.com
COVER STORY
the children turn 18 – at which point the children get all the money turned over to them to handle. All of these things can cause major headaches and great expense for your loved ones.”
“As an estate planning attorney, I know what to recommend for you based on your situation, your beneficiaries, your assets, and your goals and dreams,” she continues. “You may not know all the ways you can benefit your heirs, or all the ways you can cause problems for them with a poorly drafted will or trust.” While some may worry about the cost of the planning process, Banks assures that it’s well worth the price. “The cost for a guardian or conservatorship if you are incapacitated [or for your minor children] and the cost of a probate on your death usually far exceeds the price of an estate plan put in place while you are alive and well,” she explains. “Putting the right plan in place, using an experienced attorney, will save your family heartache and expense. Knowing they will thank you for making it easier on them – that’s priceless!” Banks shares that with the right estate plan, you can: • Rest assured that your family or friends can step in if an emergency happens to take care of your health and of your finances. • Avoid probate and quickly transfer your property. • Minimize taxes, including capital gains taxes. • Provide a guardian for your minor children. • Designate that a trustee governs the money spent on your minor children, and that person can be separate from the guardian. • Protect your inheritance from your beneficiaries’ creditors and from their divorcing spouses. Banks shares that the estate planning process is a lot easier than some may think. “You can get started now, even though we’re social distancing, through a free-of-charge consultation over Zoom, FaceTime, or the phone,” she shares.
Estate planning prices vary based on the situation and the free consultation involves a free estimate on how much a plan would cost, Banks adds.
In addition to her busy practice, Banks is actively involved in the local community. She is a supporter of the local nonprofit Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump!, whose mission is to “provide free breast health education, mammograms, testing, and direct assistance to breast cancer patients with wigs, support and resources in Arizona,” according to the organization. She also recently started supporting Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels, a local nonprofit that works “to bring dignity and comfort into the harsh world of childhood cancer and other lifethreatening diseases.” “Being active in helping nonprofits keeps me connected to the local community,” Banks says. While many of her clients come
from the immediate area, Banks says that she can serve people from across the Valley. In addition to her business and volunteering, Banks works with her husband of 32 years, Andy, at her law office. He serves as the business’ administrator and marketing director. “Clients and locals will often see him behind the scenes at my community seminars,” Banks shares. The long-time couple have been in the Valley for twenty years and have three grown children. One of their children, John, is the firm’s paralegal. “Between volunteering for local nonprofits, networking with other local businesses, and serving clients, it’s all about helping fellow Arizonans to me,” Banks says. CREATE THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR GRILLING SPACE Contributed by BBQ Island
F
ood is always a plus when it comes to bringing friends and family together, making your grill the centerpiece of your backyard. After all, who doesn’t love a great barbecue? Here are eight tips for creating the ultimate outdoor grilling space. 1. PLAN CAREFULLY. As with any outdoor project, it’s essential to map things out before you get started. Put some thought into what you’d like in your ideal finished outdoor space. What kind of features do you want? Consider the appliances, surfaces, and utilities you’ll need, and think about whether you’ll be able to design this space yourself or will need to hire a contractor.
2. DESIGN WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND. A high-quality outdoor grilling space will last your family for generations. When in doubt, add any features you may eventually want now since it’s easier to install electrical, plumbing, and heating utilities earlier rather than later. 3. ADD CABINETRY. Nice cabinets may seem like a luxury, but this is a
great way to improve the layout and upgrade the appearance of your outdoor grilling space. You need space to stash your utensils, cookware, and other must-haves, and you won’t want to keep running back and forth to the house. 4. ALWAYS ADD A VENT HOOD. A vent hood will help reroute moisture and grease, preventing staining and other damage to your surrounding walls and the rest of your home. Most areas have building codes requiring ventilation systems in your grilling area if you’re placing it under another structure, like a pavilion or pergola. 5. PROVIDE SHADE. Speaking of pergolas and pavilions, a shaded area is a must. Spending time outdoors is essential for our health and well-being, but there’s nothing worse than baking in the summer sun with no relief in sight. 7. ADD A FIRE PIT. A fire pit is great for allowing your guests to get cozier and it’s a great conversation piece that guests love to gather around. It will allow you to extend your grilling season into the winter months.
8. DON’T NEGLECT THE LANDSCAPING. Just because your grilling station is an extension of your indoor kitchen, you shouldn’t ignore the other outdoor elements that come into play. Be sure to keep the lawn properly mowed, edged, and irrigated. You can also place tall potted plants around your patio as a moveable barrier.

ARE HOMES STILL SELLING? By Holly Henbest
O
ne of the most common questions I’ve been asked during quarantine is “Are homes still selling?” The answer is “Yes!” The graph below shows the weekly trend of home sales for the greater Phoenix area. You can see that we hit bottom on April 5 with only 1,641 homes being sold that week, but we’ve had steady and consistent improvement of sales every week since then. As we went to print on this edition we aren’t quite back up to our pre-pandemic sales numbers, but we’re getting close. Our 2020 results are still lagging behind 2019 sales results and our overall spring selling season was well below what is typical, but considering we missed out on a lot of relocation and vacation home buyers, it’s excellent to see the positive trend. We’re also seeing signs that relocation buyers are starting to make plans to move this summer, instead of their original spring plans. We may also see more vacation home buyer clientele this summer, as some have decided to simply postpone their plans. We’re hearing from many that they’re ready for
a change of scenery and they are opting for a vacation here this summer. After all, we are a great road trip destination, especially from California or Colorado (two of the top states for relocation into Arizona).

ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEKS: DINE IN OR TAKE OUT
W
hen COVID-19 threatened the very core of the food and beverage industry with closures in mid-March, restaurant owners responded in turn — showing their strength by quickly adapting their business models to offer takeout, curbside and delivery options, and the widely embraced cocktails to go. The local community showed up, too, in support of these very restaurants that make up the Valley’s dynamic culinary scene. With the mandates, however, one of the most beloved culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, was placed on hold while Arizona Takeout Weeks stepped in to encourage continued dining support. Meanwhile, the Arizona Restaurant Association created Arizona Restaurant Strong, a relief fund to provide funding for restaurant
workers that found themselves immediately out of work due to closures surrounding the virus.
Now, the Arizona Restaurant Association is pleased to announce that Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out (ARW) will take place from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 28 and Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27. “We are so grateful for the support of our local dining community in the weeks that followed restaurant closures in March,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “The quick creation of Arizona Takeout Weeks and Arizona Restaurant Strong efforts could not have been possible without them. As Arizona Restaurant Weeks returns in a modified format
to include dine-in, take out and liquor to go options, we are hopeful that our wonderful community of food enthusiasts will continue to show their support in any way they feel comfortable.”
During the new Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines for opening and social distancing, whether dining in or taking out. The ARA is anticipating more than 200 of the Valley’s most beloved restaurants — from five-star fine dining establishments to locally owned and operated “mom and pop” hidden gems — to get involved. As in years past, participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated menus that showcase local chefs’
