A chief reason for all the headline-making honors is the sheer number of quality programs offered through the organization on a daily basis including: INTEGRATED HEALTHCARE JFCS offers an integrated healthcare program where clients are treated by a collaborative team of therapists, clinicians, medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals. The coordinated care efforts of this multidisciplinary team treat every aspect of a client’s well-being.

TRANSITION TO ADULTHOOD In 2009, the Department of Child Safety reached out to JFCS in an effort to help children in foster care and group homes as they approached adulthood. In response, JFCS developed Transition to Adulthood, which helps young adults with career planning, college enrollment, housing, daily living skills, finance management and behavioral health issues.

COUNSELING & BEHAVIORAL HEALTH JFCS employs a staff of therapists, clinicians, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners who serve more than 12,000 people across the Valley every year with the goal of helping people of all ages learn how to more effectively cope with life’s difficult circumstances.

ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE Substance abuse among young teens is not uncommon and, just like any adult, recovering from it requires support. JFCS has developed an innovative treatment plan for teens age 12-17 and their families to help during this difficult time.

SHELTER WITHOUT WALLS The Shelter Without Walls domestic violence program addresses the unmet needs of Maricopa County survivors of domestic violence and their children, who are residing outside of a shelter setting, and are struggling to attain and/or maintain safety and independence, whether or not still living with their abuser.

OUTPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES JFCS operates four outpatient clinics in Maricopa County. Services include individual, group and family therapy to address a number of mental health and substance use disorder issues. Clinicians are trained in trauma-informed approaches, motivational interviewing, cognitive therapies and person-centered therapeutic approaches that are solution focused.

MEMORY CAFÉ Memory Café is a meeting place for those with changes in their thinking or memory, mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder, along with their care partners. Meetings are held at the same location each month and will include meaningful and fun activities to engage the participants and stimulate their minds and bodies.

CROWN REALTY & DEVELOPMENT SELECTS CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD TO BROKER

FIRST PHASE OF CITY NORTH’S MULTIFAMILY RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT CROWN REALTY & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD EXECUTIVE MANAGING DIRECTORS DAVID FOGLER AND STEVEN NICOLUZAKIS WILL SERVE AS THE BROKERS TO MARKET THE FIRST PHASE OF CITY NORTH’S MULTIFAMILY RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT. Cushman & Wakefield will be overseeing the marketing efforts for the first phase’s 250 multifamily residential units. Crown plans to identify a developer and start construction on the first 250 multifamily residential units by the end of this year.

In January, Crown acquired the nearly 100-acre City North property that surrounds the existing High Street retail, office and residential community. The land had been the subject of litigation for nearly a decade and has been valued by the

bankruptcy court for $121 million.

Crown, which has developed the Omni Montelucia Resort and spearheaded the redevelopment of Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, plans to develop what will essentially be a new city and second urban node for Phoenix with City North.

An offering memorandum is currently being sent to prospective multi-family developers.

The 250 multifamily residential units developed in this first phase sit on four acres. City North’s entire multifamily residential component will consist of 2600 units and will comprise 32 acres of the City North development.

“We are building the ultimate ‘live, work and play’ environment at City North,” said Rick Carpinelli, Senior Vice President of Acquisition and Development at Crown. “This is one of the best pieces of real estate

in the western United States and all residential units will be wellintegrated with nearby amenities such as restaurants, entertainment offerings and fitness centers at High Street and Desert Ridge Marketplace.”

Fogler and Nicoluzakis are two of the most well-known specialists of acquisition, disposition and sales of multifamily properties and land in Arizona. Combined, they have achieved total sales of over 50,000 units with a value in excess of $5 billion.

MARICOPA COUNTY GETS RID OF OVERDUE FINES AT ITS PUBLIC LIBRARIES MARICOPA COUNTY IS WELCOMING THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS BACK TO ITS PUBLIC LIBRARIES. The Board of Supervisors has voted to eliminate overdue fines – and to waive existing overdue fines – at the County’s 18 public libraries.

This measure only applies to Maricopa County Library District libraries. While part of a growing national movement, Maricopa County is the first public library system in Arizona to take this step for all customers.

“Libraries are an important resource for children and adults to learn about and connect with their community and world,” said Bill Gates, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 3. “This is why we have decided to discontinue collecting daily overdue fines and to waive any existing fines that can build up and lead to blocked accounts for people who can least afford them, giving everyone a fresh start. We’re proud to be the first system in the state to remove this barrier between our residents and a vital community resource.”

the Maricopa County Library District. “Collecting fines isn’t a quick process. Our staff would much rather help customers explore and discover. Now is the perfect time to get or renew your library card and enjoy the library in person and online.”

MINIMAL FINANCIAL IMPACT Maricopa County Library District receives about $300,000 from overdue fine payments each year, less than one percent of its budget. “That number has been dropping and doesn’t account for the resources it takes to collect payments,” continued Kolaczynski. “Coupled with the rise in digital items, which auto-return on the due date, it just makes sense to eliminate overdue fines.”

Every once in a while, though, you’ll find someone sharing their personal experiences and maybe even asking for a helping hand.

It is not very often that we feel moved to make someone’s day, but for Heather, the manager at Saddlecreek Coffee Co, this is simply how she chooses to run her humble little coffee shop. Her team is on a mission to bring a smile to each and every person who walks into their store and occasionally a few they’ve never even met. The Facebook page dedicated to local Creekers gave them the inspiration for the Acts of Kindness Backpack Drive this summer.

One day, when mindlessly scrolling through her Facebook feed (as we all have been known to do), she came across a post about a young girl whose backpack had been stolen from their family car in the Walmart parking lot. It wasn’t so much the egregious act that caught her attention, so much as the ending line to the post. Her mother wrote that her daughter wanted whoever stole the backpack to know that she forgave them and that to have taken it meant they must have needed it more than she did. For an elementary age child to be so bold as to forgive a crime committed directly against her, inspired Heather. She quickly did

some slight Facebook stalking to find the young lady had a love for horses and ordered her a new equine printed backpack filled with supplies and a book, signed by each Saddlecreek Staff member, about random acts of kindness for kids. The little girl was so thrilled to receive her new bag; in that moment, Heather knew she and her team needed to do more.

This summer, Saddlecreek Coffee Co is accepting backpack and school supply donations that they can fill the bags with to deliver to more children in need. In exchange for the support of their guests, each person that brings in a donation item will receive 15 percent off their order. Their goal is to fill 25 backpacks with notebooks, pencils, pens, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks... etc. Saddlecreek Coffee passionately believes in their saying “Coffee with a Cause” and knows just how kind and generous the people of this community can be. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVES TENTATIVE FY 2020 BUDGET TAX RATE REMAINS FLAT; COUNTY INVESTS IN PEOPLE, PETS, AND PARKS WITH A NEW DECADE ON THE HORIZON, THE NATION’S FASTEST-GROWING COUNTY IS MAKING SMART INVESTMENTS TO FURTHER POSITION ITSELF AS AN ATTRACTIVE, LONGTERM HOME FOR FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES. The Board of Supervisors approved a tentative $2.57 billion budget for fiscal year 2020.

“This fiscally responsible and sustainable budget keeps the tax rate steady for our residents while investing in the kinds of technology and infrastructure that works to serve citizens better,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates, District 3. “These investments include strengthening public safety, improving the voter experience, preserving and enhancing our open space, and utilizing technology and process improvement to save money and make our county government more efficient while providing better service. I am grateful to my colleagues on the Board and to all departments for budgeting in a way that plans for, and protects, the future.”

With the 2020 elections fast approaching, the budget reserves funding for updated elections equipment that is expected to increase the speed with which votes can be counted. Improved technology is one piece of a larger discussion about the future of elections in Maricopa County.

“Making our elections the best they can be is a priority of every person on this Board,” said Vice Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4. “Modern, reliable equipment is essential for a county of our size so we can efficiently handle the potential record number of voters participating in our democracy in the 2020 elections and beyond.”

Recent numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau show Maricopa County added 81,244 people between July 2017 and July 2018, the most of any county in the nation. The FY 2020 budget allocates $296.9 million for capital improvement projects which will modernize the infrastructure needed to support that growing population.

Those projects include multi-milliondollar investments in county parks; a new East Valley animal shelter; and a new substation for the Sheriff’s Office in Avondale. The budget also provides continued funding for the new jail intake facility, Southeast Regional Justice Center, Central Court building, and 225 Madison renovation project, which will turn an old jail into modern, usable office space.

“I am proud to be part of the team that continues to pass budgets that protect our taxpayers while serving the needs of our ever-growing county population,” said Supervisor Jack Sellers, District 1. “This budget will assure the protection and well-being of our citizens. I’m pleased the tax rate won’t change nor is the county required

to take on debt to fund operations.” At a time when many other counties are taxing as much as they are allowed by state law, Maricopa County’s tax levy is $140.5 million below the maximum.

TIPS TO KEEP KIDS SAFE FROM HOT CAR DEATHS

F

ifty-two children died in hot cars nationwide in 2018 of pediatric vehicular heatstroke — more than any other year on record in the past 20 years. Experts say that these tragic deaths are entirely preventable.

“Even one child dying in a hot car is too many,” says Amy Artuso, senior program manager of advocacy at the National Safety Council (NSC), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate preventable deaths at work, in homes, in communities and on the road. “The good news is that parents and caregivers can act immediately to end these preventable deaths.”

June is National Safety Month and an excellent opportunity to review the facts and learn more about keeping kids safe.

UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES According to NSC and noheatstroke.

org, there are three primary circumstances resulting in deaths of children in hot cars. Knowing what they are can help you avoid them.

1. A caregiver forgetting a child in a vehicle: Leaving a child behind in a parked vehicle is an often-overlooked consequence of distracted driving.

NSC advises parents and caregivers to avoid distractions -- such as cell phone use -- when driving and parking, in order to reduce the risk of forgetting a child in the car. A routine that helps you remember to check for your child in the backseat can help, too. Place a purse, briefcase or even a left shoe in the backseat to force you to take one last look before walking away.

2. The child gaining access to the vehicle: Keep car doors locked so children cannot gain access, and teach them that cars are not play areas. Children should never be able to access a vehicle on their own.

3. Someone knowingly leaving a child in the vehicle: There is no safe amount of time to leave a child in a vehicle, even if you are just running a quick errand. Even on mild or cloudy days, temperatures inside vehicles can reach life-threatening levels. Leaving windows slightly open doesn’t help.

Children should never be left unattended in a vehicle.

EDUCATE YOURSELF Acquaint yourself and anyone who cares for your child with free resources providing vital information about vehicular heatstroke. For example, NSC recently released “Children in Hot Cars,” an online training course providing information about why cars heat up so quickly, why children in particular can succumb to increasing temperatures in cars, and what parents, caregivers and others can do to prevent these needless deaths. The course is interactive, free and can be completed in 15 minutes or less, with a certificate of completion

BUILDING A STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

erry Withers, principal at Campo Bello Elementary School, is a believer in the power of classroom furniture to build a studentcentered learning environment. Withers’ school is getting a physical facelift; it is being rebuilt from the ground up. “We are truly excited about the transformation of our school,” said Withers.

Schools are organized into classrooms: nothing noteworthy here. However, if you think of the classroom as a performance environment, you open the pathway to evaluating how to best use the desks, chairs, and tables that inhabit every classroom.

Often overlooked, the comfort of seating and the arrangement of students have much to offer the performance environment. In the good-old-days, seats were assigned by column and row. Not today.

Seating arrangements are interchangeable and the desks adjustable with the introduction of the next generation of school furniture. In the modern classroom, teachers and students design and redesign the learning space, sometimes several times daily, to meet the students’ learning needs.

ROAD TRIP ACTIVITIES THAT DON’T INVOLVE SCREENS

he family road trip is a time-honored tradition. The anticipation, the packing, the bathroom stops just five minutes after you leave your house…

According to AAA Travel, nearly 100 million American families are planning a vacation this year, with roughly 50 percent opting to travel by car. A family road trip can be a wonderful bonding experience – but it needs to be managed properly.

After all, Mom and Dad can handle only so many “Are we there yets” before the mood in the car turns sour.

Depending on how old you are, your childhood experience with long car rides consisted of looking out the window, listening to the radio, listening to your Sony Walkman, listening to your iPod, or watching the in-car DVD system. These days, however, smart phones and tablets rule the road, giving kids a myriad of options at their disposal.

While this helps create a peaceful car ride, it might not always be the best option for positive and

healthy brain development. With this in mind, here are three road trip entertainment that don’t involve a screen:

1. Scavenger Hunt: Each child has a pad of paper marked A-Z. Work together as a family team to spot items outside the car that start with each letter.

Make the game last longer by going in alphabetical order: “A is for Arizona license plate, B is for bird.” Give each child one free space to help out with the tough letters like X and Z. The reward for completing the scavenger hunt is ice cream cones at the next stop.

2. Would You Rather?: Prepare a stack of index cards with silly kid-friendly questions. Take turns reading the questions aloud: “Would you rather grow a unicorn tail or a unicorn horn?” “Would you rather have green eyebrows or green teeth?”

Encourage everyone to talk about, laugh about, and have fun with their answers.

3. Mad Libs: The classic fill-in-the-blanks game lets everyone in the car help create hilarious short stories to read out loud (while also teaching kids

about parts of speech). Available for about $5. Free printable versions can also be found online.

With a little advance planning for your road trip, you can reduce screen time for your kids and make any drive seem shorter. Enjoy your summer!

Whether you love boating, fishing, swimming, water sports, or just enjoying the beauty of a sparkling water oasis in the desert, there are many large lakes near the Phoenix area for you to enjoy with your friends and family. Here is a list of some of the lakes in the area and tips to help you have a fun and safe trip while you’re there.

LAKE PLEASANT Lake Pleasant Regional Park is a part of the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation system. Located just north of Phoenix off of highway 74 (Carefree Highway), Lake Pleasant is a favorite for local outdoor enthusiasts and fans of all water sports, with boating, fishing, camping, and trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

BARTLETT LAKE Bartlett Lake (or Reservoir) is located northeast of Phoenix, in the Tonto National Forest. Take Cave Creek Road east of Carefree until you reach Bartlett Dam Road.

Bartlett Reservoir is the secondlargest lake in the Tonto National Forest and is a state record fishing spot, as well as a great place for camping and picnicking.

SAGUARO LAKE Saguaro Lake is east of Phoenix, off of the Beeline Highway (Highway 87) on the way to Payson. The lake is located in the Tonto National Forest, a short drive from Fountain Hills and Apache Junction and is a favorite for boating and fishing fans.

CANYON LAKE Canyon Lake is east of Phoenix in

the Superstition Wilderness, near Tortilla Flats just off of Highway 88 (also known as the Apache Trail).

A part of the Tonto National Forest, Canyon Lake is a great favorite of water sports fans, hikers and campers.

APACHE LAKE Apache Lake is a bit further east of Phoenix than Canyon Lake along northtatumtimes.com

Highway 88. Apache Lake is also located in the Tonto National Forest and is known for its boating, trout fishing, and the stunning scenery and canyon walls that surround parts of the lake.

ROOSEVELT LAKE Continue east on Highway 88 until it intersects with Highway 188 and you will arrive at Roosevelt Lake, also in the Tonto National Forest.

Roosevelt Lake is the largest of the lakes in the Sonoran Desert region surrounding Phoenix and hosts boating and camping facilities for visitors. It’s also the gateway to the Tonto National Monument, a wellpreserved site of 700-800 year old cliff dwellings with a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding mountains.

• Never Swim Alone. It’s always important to keep an eye on your kids any time they are in the water, but it’s also important for adults to make sure they stick together when swimming in the lake. Drowning is a silent killer, so keep each other in view - a few minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

• Don’t Drink the Water. Untreated freshwater often contains some pretty gruesome microorganisms that can easily make you sick. Don’t drink lake water and avoid getting it through your nose – you never know what kinds of bacteria are lurking in the cool depths, but a trip to the hospital for giardia, E. coli or something worse is a terrible way to find out.

SAFETY ON THE LAKE Once you get to the lake, water safety is always a priority for people of all ages. Here are some important guidelines to keep in mind to help

• Always Wear Life Jackets.

The majority of lake drownings, somewhere around 80 percent, occur because a person was not wearing a life jacket. Flotation devices ensure that should you be forced under the water, you will pop back up to the top and stay afloat. Even strong, skilled swimmers can’t stop an undertow from pulling them under a rock or underwater cliff, so don’t

• Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

Before you jump into a swimming hole, be sure you know if there are any rocks, tree stumps, or debris lurking underneath the water that can cause a serious injury. If you are swimming near a boat, be sure to stay away from the motor exhaust and carbon monoxide fumes. And be sure to check water surrounding a dock, as boats and docks are powered by electricity, which can

cause an electric shock when you enter the water. Pay attention to the potential dangers around you and be alert and aware of your surroundings every time you enter the water.

• Wear Sunscreen. Take a Hat. Drink Tons of Water. Every time you go outside in the desert, be sure to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from dehydration and sun exposure.

Summer is the perfect time to cool off and enjoy our almost year-round sunshine by the lake or pond. The scenic wilderness and beauty of our Sonoran Desert lakes is a great way to experience nature, have fun, and enjoy the many fun activities available at the lake. But be sure to plan ahead when you head for the lake and take steps to be safe and prevent accidents, illness or drowning while you splash around.

ANSWER: As we’ve discussed previously, the first cost [unless your home is already in perfect condition] is to make sure your home is ready to sell meaning everything looks good and is functional. We often get asked the very logical question “What will it cost to sell?”

Let’s get the elephant out of the room first – commissions. Real estate companies (brokers) generally charge about 6 percent so let’s use that figure.

3 percent goes to the Listing Agent’s company; 3 percent to the Buyers Agent’s company. Out of that 3 percent (and this varies a great deal), a percentage goes to the company/broker to keep the doors open and the remainder goes to the Agent/Realtor who is on the front

line protecting you – there are costs to do business. The seller always pays for both sides of the transaction.

Realtors understand how painful it is to pay what seems like a lot of money for professional services but understand that a good Realtor not only gets you through the quagmire of buying, selling and escrow via hours and hours of research, cost evaluations, mileage, negotiations, document preparation, advice and hand-holding – all services that have a cost of doing business..

As an aside, if a company/broker says they only charge 1.5 percent (for example) to sell your home – who is paying to get a Buyers agent to show the property? Properties listed on the Multiple Listing are on social media; more wide-spread with some brokers than others. Today’s Buyers often have hit the internet first to see what’s out there but then they go to an Agent to represent their interests. That Agent needs to be paid for their time and expertise.

There are several good companies who advertise cash closing in two weeks with no showings. That can be true and viable in an emergency BUT make no mistake, the seller pays for the convenience. In addition to commission, most tack on an additional 6 percent to cover their time/costs to resell the property.

Depending on the property’s condition and repairs or remodeling needed, the seller is likely to incur those costs as well.

HOME INSPECTION WOES: HOW TO IMPROVE THE PROCESS

“WHERE IS THAT HOME I SAW ON HGTV?!”

Because of a shortage of homes on the market, the mindset seems to be, “I can't find the home I really want, so I’ll settle for this one. But it had better be perfect!”

When sellers oppose what they feel are either petty requests or renegotiations during the inspection phase, we get higher cancellation rates…and that isn’t good for anyone.

We see the effects of this frustration as the sellers’ agents. Two of our sellers recently had buyers that canceled their purchase on a seller's home during the inspection phase, only to come back again weeks later to make another offer on the home! I imagine that those buyers tried very hard not to come

back to us and accept our seller’s terms. And if there had been anything else available, I am confident they would have purchased it.

IMPROVE THE HOME INSPECTION PROCESS BEFORE SELLING There are things you and your agent can do to reduce the chances of this scenario happening to you when you sell.

• Get a Pre-Listing Inspection. The first and easiest solution is to get a home inspection before you sell. It will likely cost you around $500, but it could be the best money you spend. It can save you thousands of dollars and millions of gray hairs. Buyers think everything costs thousands to repair when it can really be just pennies. Fix it first!

In fact, we think this step is important enough that we have started paying for our sellers’ pre-inspection costs.

• Know they are going to find things wrong. Finding things wrong with the home is the inspector's job. They will find things. Even if you are the best home maintainer in the world, the inspector will find things that need repair.

Expect it, accept it, and get over it.

• Keep the emotions out of it. Even if you are selling your personal home, a home sale is still a business transaction. Try to keep it that way and don't let it get personal. And remember that this can be an emotional process for the buyer, too.

• Hire a great agent. When you get the buyer’s inspection requests, a great agent will help you understand what is important and what isn't. They will pick up the phone and negotiate for you.

Text messages are the norm and they are easily misconstrued. A great agent will also carefully shield you from potentially hurtful or incendiary comments that you should never see. We

consistently see agents that carelessly forward their client's emails containing remarks that can easily be interpreted as offensive. That should never happen.

Your agent's job is to keep things positive and professional, even during the most contentious transactions.

UPGRADED FEATURES BUYERS WANT We are studying some new trends in the market that help us understand what buyers really want to see in terms of upgraded home features. I was very surprised by the results – and after 30 years in the real estate business, I am not the easiest guy to surprise in this arena!

his summer, Brooks Realty & Advisory Group (BRAG) will unveil “The Estates.”

“The Estates are 10-acre Ponderosa pine-covered forest properties adjacent to Forest Highlands Golf Club and the Coconino National Forest just south of Flagstaff,” says Benjamin “Tres” Brooks III, who founded BRAG in the Northeast Valley in 1996.

Overall, there will be 16 estate parcels – each 10 acres – available in the gated community, with access to the estate properties permitted only through Forest Highlands’ 24-hour guard gated-entrance, off Highway 89A. And speaking of family legacies, the Brooks family has built a very special one – one that is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019.

This issue, we are proud to share their journey.

THE INITIAL DREAM Benjamin “Ben” Brooks II – Tres’ father – was born in Escondido, Calif. in 1940.

“He saw Arizona not as the Wild, Wild West, but as the land of plenty when it came to rich, very special land,” says Tres. “He wanted to build a legacy by helping to develop this land for families just like ours. He saw land as something that could be passed down in families over several generations.”

He moved his family to Arizona in 1964 and founded Ben Brooks & Associates in 1969, first making a name in residential real estate and then turning toward land investment and development in 1985, just as Tres graduated the University of Arizona.

“I actually earned my real estate license in high school, eager to work with dad,” says Tres. “But my parents were adamant about education, and about me being the first in our family to attend and gradate college.”

Diploma in hand, Tres earned an entry-level job from his father and worked his way up, earning his broker’s license at just 24.

“Then things got…interesting. My dad pushed me to go out on my own,” says Tres, who at the time was flabbergasted. “So, in 1996 I founded Brooks Realty & Advisory Group, focused on developing land with a group of my own investors.”

The funniest part of the story is that within a year of BRAG launching to great fanfare and immediate success – Ben earned the biggest land deal the

Southwest had ever seen: the chance to develop 130,000 acres near Lake Havasu City and Kingman.

“He knew I was the person for this job, which required me to actually move to Lake Havasu from 1997 to 2003 to full commit to the project,” says Tres.

And that is just one of Tres’ landmark projects. Both Ben and Tres, in fact, took on a who’s who of massively successful ventures from Arizona to Wyoming to New Mexico.

“And then the unthinkable happened,” says Tres.

“My father was involved in a motorcycle accident and lost his life in 2007, just as the real estate crash began.”

The next 10 years would be filled with the highest of highs – Tres is now married with three children himself – and lowest of lows, notably keeping a real estate business afloat.

By 2017, things were on the upswing for Tres professionally again. So much so, when he was up at his family’s vacation home in Forest Highlands and learned about land coming available for development nearby, he jumped at the chance to head the project.

Fast-forward to this summer; this land is none other than The Estates.

The project will mark the Brooks family’s purchase and development of nearly one million acres of land in the western United States.

“Talk about full circle,” says Tres. “Getting to help build on the legacy that my father started and continue making this dream he had when he was barely out of high school a reality has me emotional and proud.”

opper Blues Live is much more than just an entertainment attraction — the expansive, modern space hosts a restaurant (Rock Pub & Kitchen), a comedy club and a live music venue, which thanks to the soundproof, top-of-the line room dividers, allows multiple events to take place at the same time without one disturbing the other. The space, which opened in late 2018, is the latest Arizona concept from the creatives behind beloved venues Stand Up Live and Copper Blues, who decided to find a way to bring all three concepts together.

The space incorporates a variety of decor themes for a fun, eclectic atmosphere complete with copper pipes that span the entire ceiling, live moss murals, brick accents and commemorative stylized paintings of music greats like Prince, Freddy Mercury and Jimi Hendrix.

In addition to Copper Blues Live’s long list of top shelf events and entertainment, the Rock Pub & Kitchen’s food cannot be overlooked. While the menu includes many of the bar favorites you’d expect like nachos, pizza and burgers, there truly is something for everyone.

The appetizers range from steak bites with toasted ciabatta, horseradish and creme fraiche to a hummus plate, and even include lighter versions of classic venue dishes, like the grilled copper wings with your choice of dry rub, barbecue sauce, buffalo sauce or sweet chili sauce.

The salads also span a variety of taste profiles, including a cobb and classic Caesar alongside a trendy superfood salad with quinoa, dried corn, roasted bell peppers, avocado and almonds topped with a red wine vinaigrette.

The menu also includes four pizzas, two burgers and three sandwiches, with time-tested options like the pepperoni pizza and the grilled chicken sandwich with caramelized onion, cheddar cheese, bacon jam and avo crema on a brioche bun. For those looking for more unique dishes, they can opt for the pesto mushroom pizza with almond pesto, portobello and shaved brussel leaves or the black bean burger with hummus, shaved brussels and the restaurant’s signature copper sauce.

Bigger Bites include a poke bowl with tuna, sticky coconut rice and vegetables, roasted chicken with risotto, grilled salmon with roasted sweet potato and quinoa, steak tacos with avocado crema and queso as well as veggie tacos with seasoned veggies, roasted tomatillo salsa, pico de gallo, picked red onion and queso fresco.

Diners can finish their meal with one of Rock Pub & Kitchen’s innovative desserts, like the house made brownie with butter crema and Butterfinger crumble, or the chef’s special of the day.

The extensive drink menu includes a dozen cocktails, nearly twenty wine options and over two dozen beers including IPAs, stouts, porters, pilsners and more.

Additionally, the multi-tainment space offers a private dining area as well as large group and venue rentals for parties and celebrations.

here’s no doubt that the valley reigns supreme when it comes to our breadth of summer staycation offerings for locals and visitors alike. And if that’s the case, The Phoenician Resort, with its recent remodel and endless summer activities and specials, is the crown jewel of summer staycations.

While steeped in grandeur today, the Phoenician’s roots are quite modest. It started out as the Jokake Inn in the early 1900s, and today the Inn remains on the grounds, serving as a symbol of Old Southwest hospitality. The idea for luxury came knocking in mid 1980s with Charles Keating’s vision of building a multi-million dollar resort inspired by the “elegance and sophistication of Europe.” Each detail of the resort was considered to ensure that The Phoenician truly was, and remains today, the finest in resort lifestyle. In 1996, the property’s Canyon Suites were added, serving as the state’s only boutique hotel within a resort, featuring 60-plus rooms and ultraexclusive services such as a private infinity pool and a chauffeur-driven luxury car available.

Exquisite noshing during this event includes three-courses — finger sandwiches, scones with traditional English offerings including lemon curd, Devonshire cream and strawberry preserves, and finally a decadent and delightful selection of pastries and desserts — complemented by guests’ selection of tea and champagne. Ladies of all ages don their finest (including an optional fascinator, perhaps?) for this classic afternoon tea, which was recently given an after-dark makeover with the launch of Champagne Saturdays. From 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Saturday night, the event includes choice of champagne tiers along with an Artisanal Cheese Board Starter with domestic and imported cheeses, vine-ripened fruits, fig jam, smoked Arizona honey lavosh and crusty breads; Cold Canapes such as Ahi tuna and Thai chile crisp, macadamia-crusted goat cheese with raspberry conserve, and tomato,

mozzarella and basil crisp; and Warm Canapes like French onion boule, brandied peach and brie en croute, spinach and artichoke tortilla crisp, mini beef wellington with tarragon aioli, and coconut-breaded lobster tail with Thai sauce. The Dessert selections resemble those of Afternoon Tea and include Scottish shortbread, chocolate-dipped strawberries, dark chocolate truffles and fruit tartlets.
