ADOPTIVE FAMILIES COALITION

E

very year in the U.S., more than 135,000 children are welcomed into families through adoption. Creating a family through adoption is an amazing journey—one filled with joy—but sometimes also paved with significant, life-altering challenges. While most adoptive families soon begin to settle in with one another, children who have been exposed to neglect, trauma or abuse may have a hard time adjusting to their new home. Genetic disorders or drugs and alcohol consumed by the birth mother may cause developmental or behavioral problems. A child may have trouble learning to trust, love and live without chaos—which some have never experienced. One family in Phoenix, Arizona discovered how difficult the journey could be after adopting their son. It quickly became evident that their son would need specialized, professional treatment in order to heal. Seeking answers, they found there was a lack of support and few financial resources available for essential care. Prescribed treatments were expensive yet minimally covered by insurance—if at all. Help for hurting families like theirs was hard to find. As a result, they founded Adoptive Families Coalition (AFC) and their quest began to fill a gap in post adoption support. The effects of childhood trauma can be devastating to the new family. They can present as: explosive behaviors, disruptions in family life, struggles at school, depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation (ED), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), and a host of other diagnosable conditions.

Adoptive Families Coalition is passionate about advocating for some of the most vulnerable of our society, helping to prevent childhood trauma, providing a sponsorship program and initiating support groups. AFC believes that every child deserves the opportunity for healing and every family deserves support for their well-being and preservation. AFC offers extensive resources for parents at adoptive.org and one-on-one encouragement through personal communication. Until improvements are made to better assist children living with deep wounds—to help them heal and thrive—AFC services will continue to help fill this unique gap in our culture. The majority of parents who reach out to Adoptive Families Coalition urgently need financial assistance to provide the appropriate treatment for their hurting child—treatment that is often not covered or only partially covered by insurance. To these families, AFC

offers their sponsorship program so money can be raised to help afford healing opportunities. Financial partners make possible the AFC services so that they are offered at no cost to the families. Stories like Spencer’s compel Adoptive Families Coalition to do everything possible to help families in need: Five-month-old Spencer* (name protected for privacy) was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. There, the doctor also found evidence of earlier breaks—a result of neglect and abuse prior to his adoption. After 10 years, six therapists, psychiatrists and multiple hospitalizations, Spencer’s adoptive family reached out to AFC in desperate need for help for their wounded son. His early childhood trauma had resulted in behavioral challenges, putting the whole family at risk. Out-of-home placement for therapeutic treatment was prescribed but the costs were beyond their means. Through an AFC sponsorship, they now have financial assistance that is giving their son the opportunity for specialized care and healing. Families are very grateful to find Adoptive Families Coalition: “Thank you for all you do for families like mine. Really, thank you doesn’t begin to express my appreciation!” —J.H. “Thanks to this great organization we have been able to pay for my son’s residential treatment this past year.” —R.F. Adoptive Families Coalition is a non-profit 501(3)(c) organization dedicated to the holistic support of families with adopted children who demonstrate emotional, behavioral or psychological challenges.

GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY ALLOCATES MONEY TO AZDPS FOR SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT GOHS PRESENTS AZDPS WITH $10,000 TO HELP PAY FOR OVERTIME THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY HAS AWARDED THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (AZDPS) A $10,000.00 GRANT TO PAY FOR OVERTIME AND OTHER EXPENSES RELATED TO THE TWO WEEK BUCKLE UP ARIZONA ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN FROM MAY 21, 2018 THROUGH JUNE 3, 2018. According to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, 952 people died in automobile crashes in 2016, of which 333 (35%) were unrestrained. Children under the age of five accounted for 11 passenger fatalities in 2016, of which 3 (27%) were unrestrained.

“The numbers tell the whole story. Drivers and passengers must put on their seat belts and make sure their children are properly restrained every time they get into a vehicle.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is a state-level law enforcement agency whose mission is to protect human life

and property by enforcing state laws, deterring criminal activity and providing vital support to the State of Arizona and its citizens.

The lifesaving benefits from seatbelt use helps families and friends travel safely on Arizona roadways. Thanks to support from Director Alberto Gutier of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, DPS Troopers will be able to educate drivers and enforce state laws. Reducing injuries and fatalities through seat belt use is one of our top priorities,” said Lt. Col. Wayde Webb, Assistant Director, Highway Patrol Division.

MVD URGES ARIZONANS TO CONSIDER GETTING VOLUNTARY TRAVEL ID

AS 2020 DEADLINE APPROACHES, AIRPORTS AND TSA HELP SPREAD THE WORD ARIZONANS WHO PLAN TO USE THEIR DRIVER LICENSE OR ID CARD TO GET THROUGH SECURITY CHECKPOINTS at U.S. airports and other restricted, federally controlled facilities should take action to get an Arizona Voluntary Travel ID through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division. The Transportation Security Administration will provide MVD informational flyers at its airport checkpoints in Flagstaff, Phoenix Mesa-Gateway, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Tucson International and Yuma International. The flyers advise passengers that starting Oct. 1, 2020,

standard credentials won’t be accepted by the TSA. “Now is a great time to get a Voluntary Travel ID because the federal deadline gets closer every day,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “MVD is making this process simple. Customers can go to ServiceArizona.com and make an office appointment. The website provides information about what documents that customers should bring with them to meet the REAL ID requirements for the Voluntary Travel ID. Appointments also help MVD offices run more efficiently, helping to get customers out of line and safely on the road.”

The Voluntary Travel ID is an Arizona driver license or ID card that meets the additional identification requirements of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. Standard Arizona licenses or ID cards do not conform to the federal REAL ID requirements because of a state law that says those steps must be taken voluntarily by the license or card holder. The cost is $25 for renewals and first-time issues. Per federal law, the credential is valid for eight years, in most cases. Customers whose photos need to be updated in the near future may wish to

get the Voluntary Travel ID. Forms of identification required for a Voluntary Travel ID include one document such as a birth certificate or a passport that proves identity; one document that proves a Social Security number such as a Social Security card or W-2 form; and two documents such as utility bills or bank statements that prove Arizona residency. For a list of examples of identification documents and for additional information, please visit the Voluntary Travel ID section of the ADOT website at azdot.gov/TravelID.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE – AQUARIUMS IN THE DESERT By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

W

ater is a scarce resource in the desert, so we don’t typically imagine Arizona to be a place where you can find high-quality aquariums. Fortunately for Sonoran Desert dwellers, that perception is wrong. Arizona is home to a number of world-class aquariums, including the largest in the southwest. Summer is a perfect time to escape the desert heat and find an oasis of water and sea life in one of the many aquariums in our state. Here is a list of aquariums you can visit in the Sonoran Desert. ODYSEA AQUARIUM The state of the art OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale opened its doors in 2016. As the largest aquarium in the southwest, it boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures. OdySea also has separate tours and encounters available to learn more about sea life and provide visitors with additional aquatic adventures. Some of the extra highlights at OdySea Aquarium include a Behind the Scenes tour, an underwater SeaTrek, and a special Penguin Interaction Program. It’s best to buy your tickets online in advance, to get discounts and avoid waiting in long lines. OdySea is worth the trip and a great place to escape the heat of summer – and a membership pays for itself in just a few visits. WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO, AQUARIUM AND SAFARI PARK The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park, located off the Loop 303 highway in Litchfield Park, is another awesome aquatic adventure. The aquarium portion of the zoo gets you up close and personal to sea life and lets you see everything from penguin feedings to sharks. The South Pacific Reef tunnel tank features the longest acrylic tunnel in northtatumtimes.com

Arizona, and the aquarium is home to the only sea lions in our state. The Aquarium’s sea lion facility and programs offer educational demonstrations, sea lion shows and feedings at their specially constructed Shipwreck Cove area. The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park is always worth a visit and the aquarium is a special treat for desert dwellers trying to beat the heat of summer. SEALIFE ARIZONA AQUARIUM The SeaLife Arizona Aquarium, located in the Arizona Mills shopping center in Tempe, is a part of a larger SeaLife Aquarium group that has locations throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. The SeaLife Trust works to promote conservation efforts through education, breeding, rescuing and protecting aquatic animals all over the world. Some of the highlights of the SeaLife Arizona Aquarium include fresh water and salt water exhibits, Critter Canyon, an interactive tide pool, a Bay of Rays, and an ocean view. The kids will love the educational challenges and treasure hunts provided by the aquarium, as well as the fun play area! Buy your tickets online and in advance to get the best rates, and consider opting for combo packages with the Legoland Discovery Center if you plan to spend the day. ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM - WARDEN AQUARIUM The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson is natural park that is completely unique to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert. It’s a zoo, plus a botanic garden, plus a natural history

museum, plus a conservation, research and educational center. It also hosts a great aquarium for summer visitors to the museum. The ArizonaSonora Desert Museum’s Warden Aquarium opened in 2013 and welcomes Tucson residents and visitors with its unexpected exhibit of massive rivers with six-foot minnows, and oceans teeming with whales, stingrays, eels, and thousands of invertebrates found in the Sonoran Desert. As the museum explains, “A full understanding of the Sonoran Desert region isn’t possible without recognizing the importance of the freshwater rivers that flow through it and the Sea of Cortez, which are critical to this desert’s status as the lushest desert on earth.” Plan to stop at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum the next time you visit Tucson – it’s one you shouldn’t miss. CABELA’S IN GLENDALE AND BASS PRO SHOP IN MESA A free and fun way to see aquatic wildlife native to Arizona is to visit one of the huge freshwater Aquariums in one of our local outdoor

outfitter stores, Cabela’s in Glendale or Bass Pro Shop in Mesa. Both stores house giant freshwater aquariums that offer up-close viewing of trophy-sized catfish, bass, striper, trout and blue gill, among other fish. Check out their websites for special events and activities and to learn more about the aquariums – each of these stores is a tourist attraction and a fun day trip in and of itself! Take some time this summer to get out of the heat and visit an aquarium near your part of the Valley of the Sun. There are some fantastic options available, and it’s a great opportunity to keep cool and continue encouraging your kids’ interest in science and the world outside. Be sure to check Ladybug’s Blog for a more ideas for great places to get your kids out of the house and interested places to see around the great state of Arizona. 5 WAYS TO MAKE MATH PART OF YOUR KIDS’ DAILY LIVES

F

or many students, math can seem like the most challenging school subject. But it doesn’t have to be. Math is actually all around us. Here are five ways you can help kids draw connections between classroom math and the math that touches their daily lives.

1. BAKE AND COOK Math and the kitchen go hand-inhand. Making cookies? Double or halve the batch to learn about dividing, multiplying and fractions. Have the right recipe but the wrong measuring gear? Convert from metric to English to practice simple formulas. Witness how fractions work firsthand by quartering ingredients like peppers and apples. For more hands-on education, let kids do the measuring, timer-setting and anything else that requires math. 2. BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER Following instructions from start to finish is important for any math student, so build something together,

CAVE CREEK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Preschool Programs

like a new toy box or a bench for a reading nook. These types of projects require the use of math - from measuring materials to calculating the area and volume that objects will occupy. Be sure to point out when and how math is being used. 3. HAVE FAMILY MATH NIGHT Play games that deal with math and the tools on hand to win them, like the Casio fx-55 PLUS, a scientific calculator which helps students learn elementary mathematics such as fractions, division with remainders and random numbers. The True Fraction Display helps student understand the mathematics behind improper fractions, mixed fractions and simplification, providing the tools they need not to be intimidated by math concepts. 4. GO SHOPPING Shopping is the perfect opportunity

to practice percentages. Kids can calculate how much an item will cost and the money saved any time there’s a listed discount, like 20 percent off or half off. They can also calculate what the total charge will be after the sales tax is added. At the grocery store? Let kids weigh produce and calculate the cost. 5. CREATE A BUDGET A great way to teach kids how budgets work is with their own spending money. They will learn how to make their money last, as well as how to count it out and figure out how much change they’ll get back. You can also loop them into your own budgeting process. For example, if you have vacation plans on the horizon, you can show them how to create a budget for transportation, accommodations, food and more. (StatePoint)

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO TEACH KIDS TO CODE

I

n today’s world, when it comes to preparing kids for the future, there are few better ways to do so then by teaching them how to code. Not just for use in the technological age, but to develop academic skills, patience, and critical thinking. All of which are key components for success in school, life, and careers. What is coding? Coding is what makes it possible for computer software, apps, and programs. Your browser, your computer’s operating system, the apps on

“

Today’s kids do have a unique core understanding and natural sense of how programming works. Kids with even a little bit of experience, see the whole picture of technology with a new frame of mind. This was unimaginable in years past. But kids today get it and can see coding in a unique way. Learning to code also teaches children critical thinking and strong problem solving skills. Kids become empowered by the results of coding because there is an immediate gratification when

Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it’s important for kids to understand - and be able to innovate with the technology around them. -Tynker your phone, Facebook and the World Wide Web, they’re all made with code. Just a simple website like Google requires hundreds of lines of code and full time teams of programmers to manage and maintain.

”

they write a line of code and they see actions on a screen or a robot come to life.

Most recently, there has been a lot of attention to IoT “Internet of Things” apps. These are the programs that run your entire house! Automatic thermostats, front door cameras, and Google Home and Alexa. There are many more of these technologies coming! Who will design and code these apps? Possibly your kids and grandkids!

As mind boggling as it seems to many adults, today’s kids embrace even radical new technologies like augmented reality, 3D printing, laser cutting, and artificial intelligence wholeheartedly. Yes that means even more coding! As you might be scratching your head, one thing is for certain, there’s no stopping the technological wave. Kids that learn to code will be ahead of this curve and ready to launch into great adventures and careers of the future.

New applications are being developed that will change our lifestyle and facilitate our work. As technologies expand into the 21st century, coding will become the single greatest tool to manage it.

We at Generation Tech are thrilled to serve your community as a neighborhood technology hub where kids of all ages can gain new concepts and learn to use and manage technology.

AUTO SENIOR CITIZENS AND THEIR CARS By Mitch Clousner of Mitch’s Econo Lube

W

e have a customer, call her Mrs. S. She’s in her mid-seventies and she has a 2000 Nissan Sentra. The car has a blown head gasket because she overheated it and kept driving it around, not noticing the temperature gauge. She only took action when smoke was pouring out from underneath the hood of her car. Overheating a car engine is one of the worst things you can do to an engine. She lives modestly on Social Security but is still spry enough to take care of herself and drive around keeping herself indepen-

dent of others. Now she finds herself in a position of having to do a repair that would easily exceed the value of the vehicle. What should she do? At her age I would rather not see her take on car payments for the next five or six years but she still needs a car.

This got me thinking about something. We all hear about financial planning, planning for retirement, even planning for health care but we never hear about vehicle planning. Why is that? Why does no one sit down with seniors and discuss their plan for their mobility for the duration of their lives? It’s not difficult but is totally ignored. Ideally you would want to see your senior loved ones in cars that

have a high degree of reliability with low mileage. That would be the situation which would produce the least amount of stress, both financially and emotionally. Now she has to choose between fixing this car or getting into another car that she can afford. Unfortunately, the only thing she can afford are cars that are also nearing the end of their lives. She is confused as to what to do. She asked me if a 2010 VW would be a good car because some dealer said he could get her into that at a very low cost. I told her the reliability of European cars in the second half of their lives is low and the expenses for maintenance and repair could be higher that she would like. She didn’t like that answer. Oh well, better to be honest with them now than to just give them the answer they want to hear. If someone had sat Mrs. S down when she was in her late fifties or early sixties and discussed her vehicle plans for the next twenty

years she probably wouldn’t be in the situation she is now. Seniors have enough challenges with medical and financial issues. It is best to think about mobility in advance and plan for it. For example, seniors should think about ease of entry and exit. It’s much easier to get in and out of a small crossover SUV like the Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4 than any low to the ground sedan. It will be easier on their knees. It sounds simple but nobody really plans that way. It’s a shame. Uber is an alternative, but like most, seniors link their independence to their vehicles. Extended warranties are not really the answer since that’s just another form of insurance and we all know insurance companies look for any excuse not to pay a claim. Besides, who would want to pay for extended warranty coverage for an 18 year old car? The premiums would also exceed the value of the vehicle. There does not seem to be an easy answer except for planning. northtatumtimes.com

MAKING A GOOD B-E-T: ROAD TRIP CHECKLIST By Michelle Donati for AAA Arizona

P

icture this scenario: You and your family are ready to hop into your car for a road trip. Bags are packed, snacks are stocked and the GPS is set for your destination. As you start your journey, however, you are slowed down by car trouble. Last summer, AAA rescued more than 171,000 Arizonanas on the roadside.

This summer, the auto club anticipates that it will assist more than 175,000 Arizona drivers due to a host of problems that could have been avoided through proper car maintenance. Before embarking on your next road trip, especially if you drive a car 10 years or older, put the odds back in your favor by making a good B-E-T or checking your vehicle’s battery, engine and tires:

• Battery-related issues range from dim headlights and interior lights to a faulty starter or alternator. A battery on the brink of dying rarely warns a driver before it fails, but having a simple battery test will. Don’t forget to ask for a check of your starter and alternator as these parts can leave you stranded as well.

already will slow down on its own. Ease over to the right side of the road and gently apply your brakes when the car is almost stopped.

• Engine failures are most prominent in vehicles aged 10 years or older. Much like a battery, components of the engine cooling system may fail without warning. If you find fluids such as coolant pooling beneath your vehicle when it’s parked, it may be a sign of potential issues.

No matter the age of your vehicle, a professional inspection can help reduce the chance of a serious breakdown.

• Tire-related issues can can be minized by checking all four tires for tread depth and tire pressure, and making sure your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. If your tire blows out while driving, do not slam on the brakes. That could cause a skid, and your car

When these three systems are in working order, AAA data shows the likelihood of a serious breakdown is greatly reduced.

Drivers may skip taking their car in for an inspection, hoping to avoid an expensive repair bill. But when you factor in the cost of an interrupted trip, having a vehicle inspected and proactively repaired will cost much less in the long run. AAA offers a wide variety of auto services, including a wide network of approved auto repair facilities. Learn more at AAA.com/AutoRepair.

“DON’T LEAVE ME BEHIND!” VEHICULAR HEATSTROKE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

I

t does not matter if it’s your first Arizona Summer or you’re a Valley Native, triple-digit temperatures always feel worse than we either imagined or remembered. As the mercury rises, we start our summer traditions of testing the limits of our air conditioners and searching out the tiniest sliver of shade to park. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is also kicking off a summer tradition of making sure drivers know kids and pets cannot be left in parked cars. This summer the Office is excited to partner with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona Humane Society and Penguin Air & Plumbing for the “Don’t Leave Me Behind!” vehicular heatstroke awareness campaign. The campaign officially started on May 8 and will run until August 31, giving the campaign a full four months to raise awareness and keep the number of incidents of children and pets left in hot cars to zero. “Deaths associated with hot cars are a completely preventable tragedy for both our children and our pets,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “My personal challenge to every one of us in Maricopa County is to ensure no child or pet is lost to vehicular heatstroke this year.”

Young children are especially at risk because they can fall asleep during a car ride, making it easier for a driver not to notice them when the vehicle is parked, and for infants who are less capable of regulating their body temperature. “We lead busy lives, especially as parents of young children,” says Todd Nickoles, manager of Phoenix Children’s Center for Family Health and Safety. “We want parents and caregivers to know how much of a ‘hot zone’ that their vehicle can be, and never to leave a child alone in a car, truck or van.” The SafeKidsAZ.org webpage is filled with 10% OFF Full Groom or information, tips and videos to help spread the Bath For New Customers message and educate our Community about this Mention this ad issue. HIGH & RYE:

THE VALLEY’S BEST SOUTHERN COMFORT FOOD IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

R

ibs, fried chicken and pulled pork—is your mouth watering yet? What’s more mouthwatering than old-fashioned comfort food? How about Southern style oldfashioned comfort food? YUMMY! I’m a foodie who’s originally from Virginia, so I’m thrilled to welcome to the neighborhood High & Rye featuring their menu of Southern comfort classics reinvented. Southern fare in Arizona? Well, you don’t have to hail from the South to appreciate the taste of fine Southern cooking. In fact, that’s what General Manager Robert Gregg is counting on as he sees his new restaurant thriving here in the Valley of the Sun. While successful careers are forged from hard

work, they’re sometimes blessed with fortuitous moments along the way. For Gregg, the opportunity to open his restaurant presented itself when another Minnesota company approached his employer. They were searching for a unique restaurant to lease their space.

The company Gregg worked for was interested, so he and other key people traveled to Arizona to investigate the site. Phoenix is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and that was a definite plus for moving forward with their plans. “From both a restaurant and a creative perspective,” said Gregg, “it’s cool to be in a city that’s growing and has so many people coming. It’s a great place to grow your business.”

Being surrounded by such a large metro area was exciting, but they were also interested in the Desert Ridge community where they would actually be doing business. They studied demographics, the local restaurant scene and the general development plan for High Street the location of Gregg’s new restaurant. An upscale, mixed-use neighborhood, High Street is full of eclectic shops, restaurants, bars and apartments. They could envision High & Rye—the ‘High’ in the name isn’t a coincidence—being a booming success. Finally, having posh North Scottsdale practically next door only added some extra zing to an already savory soup.

And Gregg has had plenty of savory soups simmering in his mind as he’s been planning his restaurant for years. “Everyone in the culinary world dreams of being able to develop a restaurant, but not everyone is in a position to do so,” he said. “I was sent down here to develop one.” Fortified with the financial backing of his employer, who’s the ownership group for his restaurant, and fueled by the vision in his mind, Gregg was ready to introduce Phoenix to Southern comfort food with his unique twist. Having grown up in rural Minnesota, he knew all about the goodness of country cuisine. Not only was he raised on his mom’s delicious home cooking, enjoying such Southern standards as biscuits and gravy, cornbread and barbecue, but he would visit family in Georgia, Virginia and South Carolina. Through many meals spent with loved ones, Gregg learned the fine art of country comfort food and Southern hospitality. And he knew diners would share his zest for Southern comfort dishes as well.

COVER STORY

Gregg explained that one trend in the culinary field was to take plain/basic food and “fancy it up” with quality ingredients. For example, from a historical context, barbecue was made as a way to use leftover meat ensuring nothing was wasted, or it was made in order to jazz up certain inexpensive cuts of meat. Well, Gregg likes to take barbecue to a whole new level by making it from the very best cuts of meat. His passion for Southern comfort food is only rivaled by his fondness for whiskey. Now, you understand the meaning of ‘Rye’ in High & Rye.

Whiskey might only be “water and grain aged in a barrel,” but Gregg is a real whiskey aficionado. Having been a professional bartender since he was 21, he’s witnessed the transformation of the drinking population. He remembers a time when only older people would order whiskey drinks. Now, he sells hundreds of Old Fashioned drinks in a week. A self-described “history nerd” and “reader,” Gregg enjoys reading about all aspects of history and especially the past, present and future life of whiskey and its production. “The culture of whiskey is fascinating,” he said. “Whiskey hugely influenced the founding of our country. And before the income tax, whiskey provided 70 percent of our nation’s income.” The passion and dedication that Gregg and his team apply to their craft is what truly sets High & Rye apart from other restaurants. While they do have an ownership group, they’re an independent restaurant. This arrangement gives them the best of both worlds. They have the financial backing of the owner company standing firmly behind them while at the same time they have the independence and flexibility to make the creative and culinary

changes they desire and to implement them when they see fit.

“Because we’re independent, we can adapt the restaurant to what customers want,” said Gregg. “We can try a new whiskey or a new recipe. Corporate chain restaurants don’t have that freedom.” Pleasing the customer is what it’s all about for Gregg. The primary way they strive to achieve this mission is through their use of high-quality local and in season foods. Their chicken is organic, free-range and antibiotic free, and most of their beef is purchased through the Arizona Grown Program.

GENERAL MANAGER ROBERT GREGG AND EXECUTIVE CHEF BRICE NIEHAUS.

To enhance the pleasure of his customers’ dining experience, Gregg features live music every Friday and Saturday night and during brunch hours on Saturday and Sunday. In the future, he hopes to host sporting event parties, whiskey dinners and wine and beer dinners, etc. Finally, one aspect of High & Rye that Gregg says they’re really proud of is their choice of ingredients. However, Gregg doesn’t take all the credit. According to him, High & Rye has the best chef going. His culinary education is top-notch, and his work ethic is unparalleled. “When we’re not using local ingredients, we get items shipped to us from South Carolina and Tennessee,” Gregg said. “We want ingredients that truly reflect what Southern cooking is.” For instance, they buy their rice, grits and cornmeal from Anson Mills, which is famous for their heirloom Carolina Gold Rice direct from the low country of South Carolina. And when it comes to country ham, they source theirs straight from Benton’s Ham of Tennessee. High & Rye truly brings the South to the Phoenix dinner table.

Roof Rats are often black or brown in color and can be over 8 inches long, with a long tail, large ears and eyes, and a pointed nose. Their bodies are smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s and their fur is smooth. Roof rats prefer high places (to avoid predators) and may be found in elevated areas such as trees, rafters, attics and roofs or lower to the ground in piles of rubbish or wood. They are nocturnal by nature and are accomplished climbers. They eat fruit (which has earned them the name “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are actually omnivorous and will eat almost anything available to them. Roof rats are

also food hoarders, stashing supplies of food such as seeds and nuts. Roof rats nest outside in trees, woodpiles and debris, and in dense vegetation (or a seldom-used barbeque grill!). Like the pack rat, bait stations are effective in reducing a population. Depending on where we find the rats active, we might place a station up in the attic or near trees that the rats are using to climb onto your roof. Again, one loaded station can work for several weeks to lure and infect multiple rat invaders. I hope these tips offer you some ideas on how to keep your yard and home rodent-free. As monthly contributors to this publication, we aim to share our advice, experiences and we are sure you will find each month’s discussion one you can benefit from. virus or a hack into your personal information. It’s not uncommon. • And, of course, if you receive an email from someone unknown, never open the link. • Be careful of knock-off emails as well. An example would be Amazon or a Bank – it can look like the familiar website or logo but…is the spelling correct in the email address? Be cautious. There is no shortage of scammers trying to get your personal information. Any contact asking for personal information or verification can be suspect. • If you think your identity has been compromised, go to all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) to freeze your accounts – it may cost a few dollars, but it protects you. Thus, if someone tries to get credit in your name, you would be notified to verify the request. If you confirm that you did not request a new card or change your address, the bank will stop the request to get

a card in your name. If you want to apply for credit yourself, you can unfreeze your account for 24-hours. • To check your score, go to: www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 1-877-FACT-ACT. • Also, never give your credit card or bank information to any telephone solicitor. You never know who is really calling. If we get a call from a charity or police/fire association, we ask them to please mail us their information because we never respond to telephone solicitations or give our personal information on the telephone. Funny, we never get anything in the mail from that so-called charity. ASK THE Gate EXPERT

GATEWAY ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS Q. How have gate operators changed over the years? A. Gate operators have come a long way in the last decade. Most recently there have been updated safety standards, by way of UL325, that have paved the way to making gate automation an industry that takes consumer safety seriously.

The topic on most homeowners’ minds tends to be security when it comes to gate automation. The main function of an automated driveway gate is to secure a property. With new technology available it’s possible to have an automated system that physically locks a gate when it’s in the closed position, preventing forced entry onto a property. As better and better technology becomes available to the gate automation industry, we find our customers requesting to have their existing systems updated. Advancements in wireless communication integrated into newer gate operators provides internet connectivity and smartphone compatibility. This allows a homeowner to monitor and control their entry gate from anywhere in the world. Q.Why should I update my current gate? A. On some properties, an entry gate is the first thing that any visitor will see. This becomes especially important in relation to the curb appeal of a home. By updating older gate designs with newer, more modern aesthetics it gives you a chance to bring a fresh look to your home and northtatumtimes.com

while also increasing your home’s resale value.

Security comes back up when you think about your homeowners insurance. Often times an insurance company can provide rebates or discounts for having a properly installed and safe perimeter gate system. This is because they are always very aware how much a gate can act as a deterrent and decreases the likelihood of break ins and burglaries. Q.What does regular maintenance include, and why do I need it? A. Regular maintenance is as important to your gate as it is to your car. There are a lot of moving mechanical parts involved in your gate and operator system that can wear out prematurely if they are not maintenance properly. During every service we perform, we conduct a complete inspection of all parts on your system to diagnose the current condition and know what problems may arise in the future. This allows us to take a proactive approach to maintenance and get ahead of any part failures to ensure continuous and reliable performance. The safety features of your gate are also a critical component in regards to the operation of your gate. We can prevent injuries and accidents by properly testing the equipped safety systems and making adjustments if necessary. The best time to find out if your safety features are not working is when service is being performed. Avoid being in a dangerous situation and get your gate serviced regularly!

BLOCKERS

EIGHTH GRADE

Three parents set out to stop their teenage daughters from losing their virginity in a pact on prom night.

There is so much about Eighth Grade that just works. Writer and director Bo Burnham really ‘gets’ this generation, writing their actions and dialogue in a realistic, non-stereotypical way. It also manages to avoid the pitfalls similar films have, with the main character Kayla (Elsie Fisher) being a character with flaws, but who still manages to feel like a genuine human. The balance of comedy and drama also works, with each scene having the right tone and feelings. Despite some mature content, it is a film that both teenagers and adults will be able to relate to.

Blockers seems like a regular teen sex comedy on the surface, and that probably works to its advantage. The film avoids many of the tropes commonly found in these types of films and has more character than usual. The three leads are very funny (with John Cena probably being the breakout), and the actors that play their daughters are also likable. Some of the romances do feel underdeveloped, and while you can see where they’re coming from, you don’t buy them necessarily. It also doesn’t get past the stigma of studio comedies that seem to require that they have bland cinematography and editing. But on the whole, Blockers is an entertaining film.

A 13-year-old girl deals with issues of relationships, self-confidence and love during the last week of eighth grade.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Nearly every one of Marvel’s heroes join together to stop the mad titan Thanos from collecting all of the Infinity Stones and prevent an extinction-like event.

I FEEL PRETTY

Infinity War is really more Thanos’ film than it is the Avengers’ film, and the filmmakers take full advantage of that. He is possibly the best villain Marvel has ever had, managing to be both intimidating and emotional at the same time. Emotional is probably the best word to describe this film. Each character, who we’ve spent so much time getting to know, go through some really harsh situations, and the film almost always plays it serious. The entire cast owns their roles, and each probably feel the most ‘real’ they ever have. Alan Silvestri’s score is also amazing, with each bit coming at the right moment. Marvel has a very bright future ahead if films like this are an example of what’s to come.

There is a good message in I Feel Pretty, but a good film is more than just it’s message. The lead character Renee (Amy Schumer) is just plain annoying in both her personalities in the film, coming off unlikable and even creepy with some of her actions. There is also no style to this film at all, giving us very boring looking cinematography, generic editing and music choices. The only thing that stuck out about the ‘look’ was the outlandish designs in the office of the corporation Renee works for, because it was something different to look at. Michelle Williams also had funny moments as the boss of Renee. Overall, I Feel Pretty is very forgettable.
