Official Investigation Crimps Panel Supplies for U.S. Solar Industry But savvy customers can still get a good deal. By Erick O’Donnell We reported just last October about the economic rain clouds looming over the American clean energy movement as inflation threatened rising costs for solar companies and their customers. Well, when it rains, it really does pour. Now a government investigation into alleged tariff circumvention by Chinese panel manufacturers is inflicting severe supply disruptions on American solar installers, threatening to curtail the nation’s clean energy transition. A survey of 200 American solar companies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that 74 percent have had orders canceled in the wake of the investigation. “This is the biggest threat I’ve seen in my 15 years in the solar industry,” said John Smirnow, general counsel and chief marketing strategist for the SEIA. The inquiry was launched by the Department of Commerce in response to a complaint filed in February by Auxin Solar, which alleged that various panel exporters in Southeast Asian countries were owned by Chinese companies and were being used to bypass tariffs set up by the Trump administration. Val Berechet, co-founder and CEO of Arizona-based installer SunSolar Solutions, predicted that some companies will go out of business after being caught unprepared. A reliable source told Berechet that a “major manufacturer” had just canceled a 100-megawatt order of panels and raised prices 20 percent on its remaining stock. The price of a certain panel used by SunSolar has gone up 62 percent since last April. “It’s insane,” Berechet said. Not that he’s sweating it. SunSolar has spent the past few months carefully preparing to thrive in an environment marked by severe
disruption, leveraging long-established industry relationships to boost the company’s panel inventory and thereby build a buffer against supply shocks, Berechet said. The company is also taking care not to commit to projects for which the availability of materials is not certain, he said. “From our end, it’s all about being informed and being on top of it,” Berechet said. “It’s about having plans so we can deliver to customers.” “I do feel confident in our ability to get through this challenging time,” he added. Berechet foresees severe trouble for companies that are not as prepared as SunSolar. “People who are not prepared, not on top of this, will absolutely be blindsided,” he said. For homeowners thinking about going solar, the recent supply shock only increases the urgency of the decision. Panel prices have been steadily creeping up because of general supply-chain issues, and Berechet predicts significant and durable increases in ultimate project costs. For example, a rooftop-installation project making use of the panels that cost 62 percent more this year will ultimately cost the customer about 20 percent more than before. The rush by customers to take advantage of today’s lower prices will only jack up the pressure on stragglers to commit. “There’s a ton of demand and limited supply,” Berechet said. “And demand will only increase, given this.” Even in these times of economic and political volatility, time can be on your side—if you’re willing to take action. SunSolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Call us today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Arizona Restaurant Week Delights Diners with 10 Days of Culinary Exploration Popular Dining Event Is Back From May 20-29 By Molly Cerreta Smith Photos Courtesy of Timothy Fox Photography LET THE DINING BEGIN! The Arizona Restaurant Association’s most anticipated event of the season is almost here. The 2022 Spring Arizona Restaurant Week, 10 days of dining deliciousness, begins Friday, May 20 and runs through Sunday, May 29. During this event, diners can enjoy incredible deals and new creative menus at some of the hottest fine dining establishments in the state as well as at restaurants that remain among the Valley’s best hidden gems. Spring Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW) offers specific three-course menus at participating restaurants throughout the state. During this time, many chefs take the opportunity to create specialty dishes that aren’t generally on their menu, using seasonal and hard-to-find or on-trend ingredients to provide guests with a truly memorable dining experience. As the restaurant industry continues to navigate labor shortages, cost increases

and limited supplies, the Arizona Restaurant Association added an additional price point last year to help offset the rising industry costs. The three price points still present the state’s dining community with the most delicious way to explore Arizona’s culinary scene for a great deal while allowing restaurants greater range to provide diners with an even more elevated dining experience. The three price points on ARW menus are $33, $44 or $55 per person, and even per couple in some instances. Restaurants also may opt to feature wine pairings for each course at an additional cost. With the various price points and wine pairing options, there are many ways that diners can customize their ARW experiences to suit their preferences. “Arizona Restaurant Week serves as a time to showcase the state’s culinary breadth and highlight the talent of chefdriven establishments while giving diners an opportunity to try new menus for a great deal,” says Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve
Chucri. “With dine-in and take-out options and a variety of dining choices including high-end and independently owned best-kept secrets, we encourage diners to use Arizona Restaurant Week as an opportunity to support the industry while enjoying an incredible meal.” The Arizona Restaurant Association (ARA) has been presenting Arizona Restaurant Week for more than 15 years. As an advocate for the hospitality industry, the ARA works diligently to support the industry and present opportunities to help promote the restaurants around the state that contribute vibrantly to the state’s economy as well as its diverse dining scene. Since COVID-19 and the subsequent labor, food and supply shortages, rising prices and massive inflation, the restaurant industry has faced multiple challenges over the past few years. The ARA has responded quickly to each challenge, modifying Arizona Restaurant Week to provide take-out options at the height of restaurant dine-
in closures and evolving the program again with additional price points to help restaurants continue to provide an incredible dining experience while recognizing the vast price hikes they are facing. That’s why it’s more important than ever for the local dining community and the culinary curious to get out and support Arizona’s restaurants. And ARW provides an ideal opportunity to get a true taste of each restaurant at a significant discount. “Throughout the pandemic, the state’s culinary community continued to show support in any way they could, even in modified ways,” says Chucri. “Our industry could not continue without the support of our loyal diners; we are so grateful for everyone that dines out and joins us during Arizona Restaurant Week.” A complete list of Spring Arizona Restaurant Week participants and their menus is available on at arizonarestaurantweek.com.

Fire Ban in Desert Parks and Preserves Now in Effect
PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD
Information and Photo Courtesy of the City of Phoenix THE PHOENIX PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT HAS PUT INTO EFFECT ITS ANNUAL BAN OF OPEN FIRES IN THE CITY’S DESERT PARKS AND MOUNTAIN PRESERVES. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department’s annual fire ban is also now in effect. In consultation with the Phoenix Fire Department, smoking and charcoal fires are included in the ban due to the extreme fire danger that the combination of low humidity, increased temperatures, excessive dry vegetation, and frequent high winds create each spring. The ban applies to Camelback Mountain, Deem Hills Recreation Area, Lookout Mountain, Papago Park, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, North Mountain Park, Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, and South Mountain Park/Preserve. The ban does not apply to the city’s flatland parks. For those using the city’s desert parks and preserve land, the fire ban stipulates the following: • Open wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. • Propane or gas grills may be used, but only in established picnic areas. • Smoking outside enclosed vehicles is prohibited year-round. • Fireworks are prohibited year-round. Motorists traveling through or near Phoenix’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extreme care with smoking materials and dispose of those only in their vehicle’s ash tray. To protect their homes, residents whose property borders the city’s preserve land may remove dry shrubs, brush and grasses, and trim dead branches from trees within the 10-foot strip of land that borders their property. By creating this 10-foot “buffer zone,” residents can help to protect their homes from potential brush fires in the adjacent preserve land. Preserve neighbors also should check myhyperlocalnews.com
irrigation lines and pool back-flush hoses to ensure that water is not seeping into the preserve. Outside water sources encourage unnaturally dense vegetation growth, which increases fire risk. For general information regarding removing vegetation, residents can contact a Phoenix Park Ranger at 602-495-5458 or natural.resources.pks@phoenix.gov. OTHER PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE AS TEMPERATURES RISE As the temperature increases and humidity drops this time of year, those utilizing the city’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extra caution. Heat-related illness is common from May to October, and generally occurs because the victim has been overexposed to heat or overexerted their body based on physical condition or age. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and Phoenix Fire Department remind trail users to “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” when enjoying the city’s desert parks and mountain preserves. This includes watching the weather, dressing appropriately, bringing plenty of water and staying hydrated, carrying a mobile phone to keep in contact, teaming up with others, being honest about medical conditions, not going off of marked trails, and being prepared for emergencies. For the safety of pets, dogs are prohibited on any city of Phoenix trail when the temperature is 100 degrees or warmer. The Arizona Humane Society advises that temperatures in the 90s are also unsafe for pets to be outdoors. Detailed information about Phoenix’s 41,000-plus acres of desert parks and mountain preserves, and 200-plus miles of trails, is available at Phoenix.gov/Parks.

Help Your Neighbors Stay Cool and Safe This Summer Volunteer Opportunities with the City of Phoenix Help Combat the Dangers of the Summer Heat
months. People living alone, seniors, and those with absent, older, or inefficient air conditioning units are among those with higher risk of heat-related illness associated with indoor exposure.
Information Courtesy of the City of Phoenix THE CITY OF PHOENIX’S VOLUNTEER PHX AND HEATREADY PHX PROGRAMS ARE GEARING UP FOR ANOTHER HOT SUMMER WITH TWO VOLUNTEER OUTREACH PROGRAMS. Local community members are invited to join their efforts as We’re Cool or Cool Caller Heat Relief volunteers and help keep our neighbors safe this summer.
WE’RE COOL HEAT RELIEF OUTREACH High summer temperatures lead to thousands of cases of heat-related illness in our community each year. All these cases are preventable with appropriate resources and precautions. The city of Phoenix’s We’re Cool initiative is a volunteer program that strives to prevent heat-related illnesses. The program provides heat relief supplies and helps connect residents to city services, especially in areas where heat-related health challenges occur more frequently. In 2017, the We’re Cool heat relief initiative was launched by the Volunteer Phoenix Office, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) of the Phoenix Fire Department to connect vulnerable residents to cooling centers and hydration stations during times of extreme heat. This initiative supports

The city’s newly established Office of Heat Response and Mitigation has joined the We’re Cool initiative for summer 2022. Service Position Summary: We’re Cool volunteers engage community members in public spaces. Volunteers provide maps to cooling and hydration stations and health related summer safety information. Volunteers’ outreach will be focused on our underserved communities, transit locations, and parks and trailheads throughout Phoenix. The program will run for 24 weeks, and volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-hour shift per week. The total commitment is 100 service hours, including training. Qualifications: Volunteers must be at least 18, agree to and pass a background check, and have excellent communication skills. They also need to complete the pre-service training, have an ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers, and be able to safely work
outside in the heat for extended periods of time. Potential volunteers who may not feel comfortable working in the heat for extended periods of time are encouraged to contact Volunteer PHX Office for other opportunities to help prevent heat illness.
COOL CALLERS HEAT RELIEF OUTREACH The city of Phoenix’s Cool Callers initiative is a volunteer program that strives to prevent heat-related illnesses by conducting telephone-based wellness checks. Volunteers proactively guide residents to a wide variety of city and regional resources that can help keep home environments cool and safe during the summer
Service Position Summary: Cool Callers volunteers call community members who opt into the program at regular intervals during the summer, with a focus on days with National Weather Service Excessive Heat Warnings in effect. Volunteers conduct short questionnaires to assess residents’ health and safety and their ability to access sufficient cooling at home and in their neighborhood. Where necessary, volunteers can help guide residents to city and regional resources related to home cooling and heat safety. The program will run for 24 weeks and volunteers are asked to commit to two 2-hour shifts per week. Volunteers are asked to provide extra support during Excessive Heat Warning periods if possible. The total commitment is 100 service hours, including training. Qualifications: Volunteers must be at least 18, agree to and pass a background check, and have excellent communication skills. NEW BUSINESS ALERT: Block & Apron Opens Its Doors By Jeremiah Sosa Photos Courtesy of Block & Apron
PHOENIX | ARIZONA
LASHES
BLOCK & APRON, A RECENTLY OPENED MOM-ANDPOP MEAT SHOP, IS ON A QUEST TO PROVIDE QUALITY MEATS FROM FAMILY-OWNED FARMS STRAIGHT TO THE TABLES OF NORTH PHOENIX RESIDENTS.
Classic Hybrid Volume Mega Volume
Owned by Brent Michaud and Janine Williamson, Block & Apron, located just off Cave Creek Road and Rose Garden Lane, offers a wide range of food products. They sell not only the traditional meats like beef, chicken, pork, and fish, but also other products like cheeses, sauces, spices, and even candy. A large part of their brand is the family-owned farms that they source their meat from. “We work with a lot of small companies, which we really like, because anytime you have a small company to work with, they’re in business because they do something very well,” Williamson says. Some of the meat products that Block & Apron sources from the family-owned farms include grass-fed organic beef, pasture-raised chicken, Berkshire pork, USDA prime beef, as well as wild-caught red Argentine shrimp and Alaskan salmon. And even though Block & Apron just opened earlier this year, Michaud is no stranger to the meat business; he has been involved in the wholesale meat industry for over 20 years.

However, even after 20 years in the wholesale business, the idea of selling meats in a brick-and-mortar location had never crossed his mind—that was until he and Williamson had a revelation. “Over the pandemic we were starting to eat a lot of the meats ourselves, and we were like, ‘These are really good, why aren’t we selling straight to consumers?” Williamson says. “So, we made that happen.”
WHEN YOU MENTION THIS AD
Another large factor that prompted Michaud and Williamson to open their store was the lack of quality meats that were sold in the North Phoenix area. “It’s just hard to find really good quality meat in the grocery stores anymore, so we knew there was a nice niche for a mom-and-pop shop,” Williamson says. “I think there’s so many families around here that are looking for that.” Williamson’s assessment was right. “Everybody came in and they were so excited—they were so happy that there’s a new local business,” she says. “We’ve had so many people come back in since they discovered us and get more. We’ve even had several people post something online about their meal or something that they’ve purchased here and share it with other people.” As for the future of Block & Apron, they hope to continue to build a strong online presence and branch out to delivering their products as well. “One of the ways we’re going to be growing our business is putting more emphasis on marketing the online business and making sure our website is in tip-top shape,” Williamson says. “We have some changes implemented in the future to grow that part of the business and hopefully have a wide shipping radius as well.” Block & Apron is located at 20820 N. 25th Place. “Unapologetically Enough”
A Local Writer Releases Her Debut Novel on May 24 Images Courtesy of Carrie Severson WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENOUGH? For years, local entrepreneur and writer Carrie Severson struggled with her own enoughness.
Shining the light of love on both the good and the bad of that process, Severson shares her soul quest and how she learned to navigate her own enoughness. With honesty, tenderness, and vulnerability, she taps into a powerful shared reality, illuminating the experiences so many women go through as they, too, struggle to define success and self-love.
Like so many women, she constantly questioned if she was thin enough, wealthy enough, young enough, or fertile enough. But instead of finding answers, she ended up battling professional and personal burnout by the time she was 35. Once she had a grip on her happiness again, she put her full attention on her love life. As a single woman, without her own children, she decided to create a Plan B and a Plan C for herself.
“Unapologetically Enough” is a raw, relatable story of what happens when one woman stops questioning everything about herself and her life and starts questioning what her life could be like if she accepted herself as enough.
After two failed rounds of IVF, and many bad dates, she finally came to the realization that to feel like she was enough, she had to heal herself and create massive change in her life.
“Unapologetically Enough” is available for pre-order anywhere books are sold and will be released on May 24. For more information, visit unapologeticallyenough. com.
Complete with exercises to help readers redefine their own thoughts about success and self-love, this memoir was written to inspire and support women on their own journeys of self-discovery.

For those of you who don’t know our story, let us enlighten you
Meet Shawn Ramey, owner and founder of Elite Turf, sister company to American Team LLC. Shawn and his father Brian, both decorated military veterans, founded American Team LLC in 2006 with one goal in mind: customer satisfaction! In their early years, they offered full property renovations, remodeling not only inside the house but a complete landscape design as well. As artificial grass started to become a hot commodity, he quickly realized this is the future for water conservation and maintenancefree landscaping for his customers. Shawn became fully immersed in learning everything he could about the industry. Fast forward to 2021, Shawn is known in Arizona as a leading expert in residential and commercial artificial grass and hardscape design, Shawn has been instrumental in the training and development of many local artificial grass companies and installers. Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Sandi Salazar, and I am a physical therapist and owner of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center’s Phoenix location (fyzical.com/phoenix).
so lucky to do work that I absolutely love and am rewarded every day with helping someone get back to living and loving their life. My day goes by so fast, every day is different, and I work with truly amazing people. With my son off to college now and my daughter graduating high school this year, life is changing rapidly. As I’m approaching the empty nester phase, I’ve had the opportunity to return to playing my favorite activity, volleyball, and am looking forward to enjoying more quality time with my husband of 20 years. MY FAMILY IS…My world. I have two amazing kids that I absolutely adore, an involved and caring husband, and I am fortunate to have my parents and siblings close by.
I’VE LIVED IN NORTH PHOENIX NEARLY ALL OF MY LIFE AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE…I am able to be active yearround and I absolutely love our sunsets. We moved here from Wisconsin when I was eight years old and I couldn’t imagine growing up anywhere but here. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Hitting the ground running with a good workout. After my workout, it’s time to enjoy my coffee and some quiet time to start my day with my head in a good place. Then the day really begins—making sure my high school senior makes it out of bed and off to school on time, getting the pups breakfast and snuggle time, and off to work. I am so fortunate to have my practice, FYZICAL, so close to home and in such a vibrant community at City North. Once I’m at the clinic it’s “game on” and nonstop from start to finish. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS…My myofascial release treatments which I liken to my body’s fountain of youth. I love it so much that I have been practicing the unique approach to myofascial release for about 15 years now. I feel better than I did 20 years ago and have seen it transform so many of my patients’ lives as well. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… As an 80s child, “The Breakfast Club” never gets old, but there are so many good options that bring back such great memories. And, you can’t be named Sandi without loving “Grease”! WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE…A professional athlete. All I ever cared about when I was younger was sports, and it didn’t matter what sport.
That’s why I love my work so much—I get to help people discover their inner athlete every day. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Sweet Caroline.” It just makes you happy. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS…I don’t have one specific person as there are so many amazing people to learn from. I do enjoy listening to the “Live Inspired” podcast with John O’Leary as his personal story is amazing. He always has incredible people that he interviews that motivate you to want to be a better person. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS…Netflix Is a Joke Radio on SiriusXM. There are some great comedians on there. THE PERFECT DAY…Would have a good workout, great food, and hanging with my family.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Cancer Support Community of Arizona. As an ovarian cancer survivor, they provide resources and community when you need it most. MY LIFE IS…Amazing. I get to do work I love every day and have an incredible family and group of friends. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… I do love homemade gifts, so I will go with the most recent that my daughter made me for Christmas. I love daisies and she took the time to paint daisies on a green canvas tote for me. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… The beach anywhere, but if I had to pick, Santorini. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED...The golden rule: Treat others how you want to be treated. myhyperlocalnews.com

A Shifting Real Estate Market? By Holly Henbest, Realtor
W
e’re starting to see some shifts in the market. When I say shift, I’d like to emphasize that we aren’t seeing any major changes, but there are small little shifts happening that show we are now heading toward a more balanced market. However, as we head toward that balance, it will probably be at least another year before we see any significant difference in the imbalance of supply and demand. So, don’t take this news for more than it is. A slight shift does not mean a bubble or a collapse of pricing. It is simply a few small steps toward a more balanced market.
move into a rental, and then buy a home when the right one comes on the market. With the market so low in inventory of homes for sale, a lot of people are hesitant to list their home for sale, because where will they go? Now, with more rentals becoming available, there are more options, so it should help to get more sellers off the fence and their homes listed. With the market so competitive for buyers, it’s also important
The most significant impact to a balanced market will be more homes listed for sale. Ultimately people decide to move because life happens. People get married, have babies, retire, get relocated, kids go to college, incomes change, and all of those life events contribute to the need to move. People have put plans on hold for a long time between the pandemic and a tight housing market, but at some point, you just have to get on with your life plans and I think that’s what we will see more of in the coming months.
So, what are the small shifts? First, in April we saw an increase in “Coming Soon” listings. That means more homes are getting listed for sale and ready to hit the market. We also saw an increase in single family home rentals and a decrease in the price per square foot list price of rentals. I’d like to clarify what a reduction in the average price per square foot means. That does not mean that the average price of an individual home has been reduced or lost value. It really means that more lower priced homes have been listed. This is a critical item to understand. A lot of people assume that prices are going down when they see the average price per square foot decreasing, but that is not a direct correlation. It just means that more homes are being listed for a lesser price. That, however, is good news because it means there are more rental options coming available that are more affordable. The reason it’s good to see more rentals available at a more affordable price is because it will allow people who want to move to have more options. Therefore, more people may list their home for sale since they are now more comfortable knowing that more rental options may be available for them to live in while they wait to find a home to buy. This is a very common tactic for people who want to move: sell your house,
Another impact we’re feeling currently is buyer burnout. This has been a growing problem for the last year. No one likes to be a loser and if you are a buyer and you’ve made multiple offers and never won, that gets old and depressing. So, some buyers are stepping back from the emotional roller coaster and taking a break. However, it is likely that, after a break, they will want to return to the search process.
to have fewer contingencies in your offer, so if you need the money out of your home to put toward your purchase, it’s wise to get your home listed and sold prior to buying. Another option is to list your home for sale and then rent back from the buyer until you find a new home. It really depends on which option you’re most comfortable with. Another factor contributing to a more balanced market is interest rates. Interest rates are still relatively low but they have gone up over the last few months. Some buyers are more impacted by this than others, especially buyers in lower price ranges. Inevitably, some buyers have or will exit their search process because of interest rates. That means there are fewer buyers making offers. We’re still seeing multiple offers but the numbers have decreased.
Before you get all excited that the market is going to be stabilized and all will be back to a more “normal” state, please know that we are a long way away from normal, but we can appreciate the small shifts that are guiding us toward a more balanced supply and demand market. Webb Plastic Surgery
An Experienced Local Plastic Surgeon with a Personalized Approach
D
r. Leland H. Webb, MD, FACS, knows that cosmetic procedures can be nerve wracking—he’s not only been the surgeon performing the procedures, but a patient in need of quality care. Because of his experiences on both sides of the operating table—and a belief that a personal, compassionate bedside manner comes before anything else—he founded Webb Plastic Surgery, a toprated practice with two Phoenix area locations ready to serve those interested in cosmetic procedures.

not a procedure,” says Aileen G., a recent patient at Webb Plastic Surgery. At Webb Plastic Surgery, Dr. Webb, who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, offers everything from breast augmentation to tummy tucks, as well as facelifts and reconstructive surgery, just to name a few. With locations in both Phoenix and Paradise Valley, they serve patients across the Valley and are dedicated to precision, expertise, and compassionate care in all they do. According to his patients and Dr. Webb, it’s the personal approach that makes Webb Plastic Surgery stand out.
“He [Dr. Webb] talked to me like a person, “I’ve had patients tell me that I ‘speak to 18 • May 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
them like another human being,’ meaning that I’m easy to talk to and talk to them like a friend would,” Dr. Webb shares. “I think that’s what really separates our practice from the rest—that personal touch and ability to see things from their point of view.” Dr. Webb shares that he knows what it’s like to be a patient, so he takes that experience with him when it comes to treating his own patients. In 2012, he was in a debilitating bike accident that left him in need of reconstructive plastic surgery. “I remember laying there in the hospital and how helpless I felt,” he says. “My doctors were my friends, so of course they treated
me like a friend and kept me updated like a friend would. I thought to myself, ‘Isn’t that what people want?’ To be treated on that comforting, relationship-based level makes all the difference in the world.” “A lot of the time doctors can come off as very esoteric—as if they have this unapproachable air about them,” he continues. “For me, plastic surgery and being a doctor is a wonderful skill set that I have that can help people change their lives and feel better in their own skin. If someone is looking for a doctor who is worldclass trained and cares extensively on a personal level about their clients, Webb Plastic Surgery is the place to come to.” myhyperlocalnews.com
Dr. Webb founded Webb Plastic Surgery in 2020 after he served in the United States Air Force for 17 years, where he was a practicing surgeon for much of that time. He garnered his medical training from the world-class institutions of Vanderbilt University and Mayo Clinic. He is well-published in several medical journals spanning the disciplines of medicine and surgery and he maintains academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the University of Arizona. “Starting my own practice was one of the hardest, most worthwhile things I’ve ever done,” Dr. Webb shares. “There’s a lot of unknowns and risks that come with establishing your own medical practice,
but to know that I have that autonomy to build a practice based on values and ethics that are important to me is priceless.” Building his own quality practice has worked out well for Dr. Webb as, since opening just two years ago, they have expanded to two offices and were honored on a list of the highest rated companies in Arizona by Top Rated Local. “I believe that my passion for providing compassionate care and being relatable to patients comes from my extensive experiences in the military and moving around so much while in the service,” Dr. Webb shares. “I was honored to learn from and meet people that were different from me, and that helped me to truly value my own authenticity and figure out what is important to me.” One part of his practice that makes Dr. Webb so relatable to patients is that he is a Desert Ridge resident, family man, and dedicated to the community. He runs the practice with the help of his wife, Sarah, who is his college sweetheart. He’s also a dedicated dad of two children, ages 11 and 12. “Plastic surgery of course is often an elective, cosmetic procedure, but it can also be needed and reconstructive in nature as well,” Dr. Webb says. “Being able to help restore people’s confidence in themselves and, sometimes, even be credited for ‘giving them their life back,’ is so rewarding.”

What Patients Are Saying
“Dr. Webb is literally amazing. I used him for a breast reduction and lift, and he crawled into my brain and gave me exactly results I was looking for—which I doubt another surgeon would have been able to do so flawlessly. Not only aesthetically are his results 100%, but with his background, you know if anything out of the ordinary or unexpected were to happen, he has the ability and demeanor to handle it. He is also incredibly accessible, and you don’t have to worry about not being able to get in touch with him if you need some reassurance, which is very important after having surgery. I would sing his praises to the moon and back.” - Ashley S.C.
“I had a breast reduction performed by Dr. Webb and I cannot say enough good things about him and his staff. For a few reasons my surgery was a bit complicated, but Dr. Webb did a fantastic job. I healed flawlessly and my results are better than I ever anticipated. I truly felt like Dr. Webb listened to all my concerns and expectations and explained everything thoroughly throughout the entire process. His staff is also a pleasure to work with, which is a huge plus! I’m so grateful I was recommended to Dr. Webb by a prior patient of his, and I pass the recommendation on to everyone I can.” - Stephanie K.

Education Congratulations to the Class of 2022! By Cort Monroe, Ed.D., CCUSD Superintendent Congratulations to the Class of 2022 on their graduation! This current senior class is unique and I commend each one of them for their grit, resiliency and perseverance the last four years at Cactus Shadows High School. With their four-year experience almost in the rearview mirror, graduates can now reflect on the challenges they experienced while in high school. Many times,
challenges, when seen through a longterm lens, present valuable opportunities for good, and these challenges will hopefully help our graduates be better people going out into the world and pursuing their passions. They are doing so with the support of their parents, family members, friends, teachers, coaches, and others around them. I would like to make note and congratulate the Class of 2022 on the following accomplishments: • The Class of 2022 consists of approximately 460 graduating seniors at Cactus Shadows High School. • Congratulations to Sophia Barnedo and Bryden Kaminsky on being named Co-Valedictorians. They each had a weighted GPA of 4.850. Summer Water Safety STAY COOL AND SAFE WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS
By Jill Frier
S
ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for the Valley of the Sun, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies, and first responders come out in droves this time of year cautioning parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including lakes, canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs, and ponds. Anyone who cares for children should be aware of the potential dangers and possible tragedies of drowning. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your kids safe around water as the weather warms up and pools become more attractive to children everywhere. PREVENTING DROWNING In addition to teaching kids how to swim, the best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone or the iPad down and be sure to always keep children within reach of an adult. Never leave a child alone around a
water source. It only takes two inches of water and a few seconds to drown. OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT DROWNING: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house. • Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys, or ladders away from pool fences. • Teach your children to always ask for permission to go near the water so they develop quality water safety habits at an early age. • Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area and don’t store toys near the pool. • Don’t allow anyone to swim alone – always swim with a buddy. • Drink plenty of water, even if you aren’t thirsty, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. • Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices near the pool and readily available. • Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are near a pool or water source and take the kids with you when you leave the area. • If a child is missing, check the water first because every second counts to prevent drowning.
• Make sure everyone in your family, children and adults, learn to swim. • Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after you use them. Store containers upside down so they don’t collect water and keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Do you know what to do in an emergency? Accidents are unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, whether a child or an adult. THE MAIN STEPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU FIND SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN A WATER EMERGENCY ARE: 1. Yell for help and pull the person out of the water. 2. Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions. 3. Begin CPR, if you know it. 4. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.
Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life. LEARNING TO SWIM One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning. There are many options for swimming lessons and a range of prices, times, and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town or go to a city pool or nonprofit community center. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy our almost year-round sunshine by the swimming pool, lake, or pond. Water is a great way to cool off and have fun but take steps to be safe and prevent accidents or drowning while you splash around.
It’s Water Safety Month! Now is the time to plan by enrolling your little fish in swim lessons. While we’re focused on teaching them key water safety skills, your family will be focused on the fun. It’s what we call the Science of SwimPlay®.

Timely Health Updates From Local Experts
M
ay is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month and Stroke Awareness Month. We checked in with local health experts to find out more about these two important health issues.
NATIONAL SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of Justin Moser, M.D. Did you know that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined? You might think it’s unlikely to affect you until you’re older, but one specific type of skin cancer – melanoma – is one of the most common cancers you’ll find even among young adults. Melanoma also accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths due to its aggressive nature. Especially in the hot and sunny climate we enjoy here in Arizona, skin cancer and melanoma deserve our attention. The best thing you can do for your skin is wear a good SPF sunscreen (30 or greater) that protects your skin against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). Put it on every couple of hours that you’re outside – even if it’s cloudy. With proper care and monitoring, you can prevent skin cancer or catch it early, which lessens the chance you’ll be dealing with an advanced stage of cancer. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your skin for anything suspicious, and why getting regular skin checks from a dermatologist is so critical. It’s recommended that you begin annual skin screenings in your 20s or 30s, but if you’re in the sun a lot or have a family history of skin cancer, you should talk to your doctor about being screened sooner. The good news is that proper screenings catch skin cancers earlier. The earlier skin cancers are treated, the higher the chance of a cure. Even with melanoma, if it’s detected early, the fiveyear survival rate is 99%. Justin Moser, M.D., is with HonorHealth Research and Innovation Institute Melanoma Clinic.
STROKES NEED FAST RESPONSE: MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Abrazo Central Campus Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Lisa Ziomek, Stroke Care Coordinator at Abrazo Central Campus. More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic
strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital that can provide the right treatment in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: • Face – Ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? • Arms – Can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? • Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange? • Time – If you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed.

On the Road Again! Are you Ready for Vacation? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
M
any of us are finally getting an opportunity to travel again, and we are more than ready! However, are you truly ready for that trip? One item you may have forgotten is to check on whether your estate plan is in order before you hit the road. Here are some thoughts on preparing your estate plan before your trip. • Get a Will, Trust and Power of Attorney in place. Have you ever gotten on a plane and thought, “I should have done my Will! What if something happens?” My clients feel great peace of mind after completing their plan. Your vacation can serve as the impetus to put a plan in place. • Update your existing estate plan. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to update our estate plan from time to time because change is inevitable. Are your children older now? Are your listed trustees and executors still a good choice? Check your plan to assure that you and your loved ones will be protected. • Name guardians for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents appointing guardians, especially if you are traveling without them. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so if needed.

FREE Estate Planning Consultation
• Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family). • Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file a probate court proceeding. It’s also a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans. • Organize your accounts and documents. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found. Then make a list of all your assets and where they can be found, including usernames and passwords. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe, secure place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
ON NETFLIX
“Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” A man recalls his childhood in 1969, which seems to be more fantastical than others. Richard Linklater uses his rotoscope animation style again, appropriate as it gives the film a feeling of a memory or a polaroid come to life. That’s the best way to sum up this movie— one long memory recount of a childhood that seems too insane to be true. It’s sort of an aimless movie, with its big selling point merely taking up less than a quarter of the film and its focus could be seen as boring or stretched out into a feature length. But there’s still enough charm from the actors to bring out the sincerity in it and of memories of a nostalgic time. And when it gets into the fantastical, it still fits and is entertaining. A nice, short ride.
IN THEATERS “Ambulance” Two brothers find themselves being chased across Los Angeles after stealing an ambulance with two hostages. A film 28 • May 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
full of pure adrenaline, “Ambulance” is Michael Bay’s strongest work in a decade. This is an empathetic piece, one that explores what happens to people forced by desperation into a terrible situation, eloquently shown in performances by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzláez. Even so, the film doesn’t forget to be the thrill ride it promised, where Bay’s kinetic and fast editing is complemented by a more unhinged performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s two hours of continuous chaos, with some of the most impressive action of Bay’s career where we feel the isolation of the ambulance while also getting the impression that the entire city is after these two. In an age where action films underdeliver on their most important aspects, this film is a real triumph.
In a movie where every character must play different versions of themselves, each actor delivers on the promise, particularly Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, who go back and forth between hilarious and heartbreaking in their performances. This is a movie where you can watch fantastic fight sequences with impeccable choreography followed by some immature humor that brings the laughs, followed by one of the most crushing sequences in a film this year that happens to be between two rocks. And somehow, it all comes together and makes for what may be the best picture of the year. It’s not often we see something like this, and everyone should experience it.
biggest sin though is that, despite its claim as a horror film, there’s no tense nature to be found and it can’t even hide behind the “slow-burn” handle. Goran Stolevski’s directing is impressive and he shows some genuine promise for future films, but as a writer, it is what causes the whole film to collapse.
MAY RELEASES MAY 6 • “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” MAY 13 • “Firestarter” (In theaters and Peacock) • “Pleasure” (Limited) MAY 20 • “Downton Abbey: A New Era” • “Men” (Limited) • “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” (Disney+) MAY 27 • “Top Gun: Maverick” • “The Bob’s Burgers Movie”
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” A woman discovers that a multiverse with several versions of her exists and she is its last hope at survival. It’s rare to see a movie that pushes every limit that film can have, and yet, here it is. This film is a symphony of colors, chaos, and love for people who are broken and keep going.
“You Won’t Be Alone” A witch travels between various bodies to see the human experience. Sometimes, you come across a film that you want to admire but can’t. “You Won’t Be Alone” starts out well, with one of the most quietly nerve-wracking scenes of the year. But after that, we experience a very dull film; one that comes off as aimless. For a film that’s all about the experience of being human, none of the bodies our lead inhabits deliver a threedimensional feeling and even the usually great Noomi Rapace seems bored.
