TELEHEALTH TIPS CONNECTED TO COVID-19
By Dr. Anne Docimo, Chief Medical Officer, UnitedHealthcare
AS THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 CASES CONTINUE TO MOUNT, MANY ARIZONANS MAY BE CONSIDERING WHERE TO GO FOR CARE IF THEY DEVELOP POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS. One important – yet potentially overlooked – resource is telehealth, which may enable people to connect 24/7 with a health care provider via a digital device and avoid potential exposure risks associated with in-person trips to health care facilities. Telehealth may be especially helpful as an initial option for medical advice related to COVID-19 and to help evaluate other possible health issues, as well as to assist the 20% of the U.S. population that lives in rural areas. To help people more effectively take advantage of this technology during the evolving COVID-19 situation, here are three tips to consider:
Identify Available Resources: To find telehealth resources, check with your care provider group, health benefit plan or employer. Nearly nine out of 10 employers offer telehealth visits to their employees, as do many Medicare and Medicaid health plans (in some cases by telephone), and 76% of hospitals connect patients and care providers using video or other technology. In some cases, people can access telehealth visits without cost sharing. Since the outbreak emerged, some health plans are now encouraging patients to use telephone or live videoconferencing (if available) to connect people with local network medical providers, waiving all cost sharing for COVID-19 related visits. This is especially important for people with certain complex conditions, such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, as it may enable them to “see” their own physician for acute or followup care related to their condition and help avoid potential exposure to the coronavirus during an in-person visit.
Understand Likely Next Steps: During a telehealth visit, care providers can give general medical advice to evaluate possible COVID-19 symptoms (fever, dry cough or difficulty breathing). While diagnostic testing services are not available through a telehealth visit to help confirm a diagnosis for COVID-19 (if needed), care providers can help guide patients to a local care provider or public health authority for testing and follow-up care. Making these connections may help people take the appropriate steps in advance of an in-person test, which may help reduce the risk of your exposure and possible exposure to other patients and health care providers. For other illnesses (not COVID-19 related) that are treatable with medications, telehealth care providers can write prescriptions and discuss how to obtain them safely, such as using medication home delivery or drive-thru pickup at a local pharmacy. Due to the COVID-19 situation, it is important to note that people may anticipate potential wait times, as some
care providers offering telehealth may be currently experiencing a surge in appointments.
Access Other Health Services: While elective health care procedures may be delayed to help enable care providers to focus on COVID-19 cases, telehealth may help people more effectively manage other health issues without the need to go out and risk potential exposure to the virus. Telehealth can help address myriad medical issues, including allergies, pinkeye, fevers, rashes and the regular flu. In addition, so much time at home can also contribute to behavioral health issues, so people should consider telehealth as a resource to connect with a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist. Importantly, people who experience a significant or serious medical issue should go to the emergency room. By considering these tips, people in Arizona may be able to more effectively use telehealth resources to help stay safe during these challenging times.
RESOURCES FOR ABUSE VICTIMS DURING COVID-19 Compiled by Michelle Talsma Everson WHILE MANY ARE STAYING WITHIN THEIR HOMES AND SHELTERING IN PLACE DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, FOR SOME, HOME IS THE LAST PLACE THEY WANT TO BE. “Abuse is about power and control. When survivors are forced to stay in the home or in close proximity to their abuser more frequently, an abuser can use any tool to exert control over their victim, including a national health concern such as COVID-19,” according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “In a time where companies may be encouraging that their employees work remotely, and the CDC is encouraging social distancing, an abuser may take advantage of an already stressful situation to gain more control.” And, it’s not just adult victims who suffer. “The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is headquartered here in Arizona, but it’s the child abuse hotline
for all of the U.S. and Canada,” shares Savannah Harrelson, a spokesperson for the hotline. “We saw a 31 percent increase in contacts to the hotline this March compared to March 2019, which is a result of the pandemic. We’ve received numerous calls about parental anxiety, concerns about staying at home with an abuser, and resource inquiries—all related to COVID-19.” Below are some resources for victims of abuse that are available during the coronavirus epidemic. Of course, if it’s an emergency, call 911.

GRETCHEN WEIDMAN IS (LITERALLY) BREWING UP SOME SELF-CARE CONCOCTIONS AT A TIME WHEN MOST OF US COULD USE SOME HELP RELAXING AT HOME. Her new business, Bone & Basil, is a one-woman shop for bath brews and salves that promote self-care. Available exclusively on Instagram @ bone_ and_basil, Weidman is happy to mail or do a contactless delivery to customers. Bone & Basil offers four bath brews and two salves, all of which are hand mixed at home for each person when they order them. She says that the most popular bath brew is her Relax Brew and the most popular salve is the one for pain. The ingredients that Weidman uses in her brews and salves are all natural and organic. “Especially during this pandemic, when you can’t go to a spa, you can physically relax your body with a bath and brew. The brews I make touch four out of the five senses—all of them
besides taste,” Weidman says. “For those who are open to the holistic end of things, my bath brews and salves can be a different and fun way to breathe deep and relax—something we all need right now.” A single mom to a busy pre-teen, Weidman includes her daughter in her growing small business. “She helps me put labels on bags and other tasks like that; I think it’s a good lesson for her to see her mom hustle and stay busy and motivated,” she shares.
Eventually Weidman, who is currently the creative director at a salon, would like to own her own shop. Until then though, she enjoys connecting with customers over Instagram and shares that Bone & Basil products can also be purchased at Abundant Space in Scottsdale. HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS By Jody Cohen
AS COVID-19 CONTINUES TO WREAK HAVOC AROUND THE WORLD, IT’S ESPECIALLY HARD TO BE HOPEFUL. But a local family has found a positive way to deal with this crisis. Nellie Klooster, her husband and their toddler son have created a neighborhood “pantry” in their front yard, and the response has been very successful. Klooster says that many neighbors have donated items in a short period of time, and it has built up so much that they went from one small shelving unit to two shelving units, bins, boxes, and a small table. Some donated items include: health care and baby products, kids’ entertainment, snacks, treats, fresh eggs, herbs, citrus, canned goods, juices, boxed goods like pasta, rice, grains and cereals, dried and canned beans and legumes, books, stuffed animals, housekeeping products, cat and dog food, cat litter, batteries, and water. Klooster says, “We want to help our neighbors, especially those who don’t have access to food or don’t qualify for food banks, so that they don’t have to go into the stores.” The neighborhood pantry started the day after her husband’s job was furloughed, and like numerous other Americans in a similar situation, they were concerned about how they were going to provide for their family. Due to her son’s asthma and a newborn baby at home, they can’t shop as freely as they once could. However, she realized that they have what they need, while others may not. In order to share with others, Klooster immediately set up one shelving unit in their front yard and stocked it with extra items she and her son found in their house, like canned goods and paper products, and the pantry was born. Neighbors donate items daily and can converse with each other via Nextdoor. com. The main supporter of Klooster’s pantry is her 3-year-old son, who does most of the work, along with his dad. “On the first day, he went into his room and picked out a few items he wanted to give,” Klooster says of her son. “Every morning at 8 a.m., he helps put out the pantry, and every night at 7 p.m., he helps put all of the items back in the garage.” Klooster added that her son also helped her make signs: “Neighborhood Pantry”; “Take what you need, Leave what you can” and “Have a Blessed Day” so that people can quickly identify the items. Besides the pantry, Klooster says that she’s

working on making an appreciation box for nearby firefighters. She’d like to donate snacks, quick meals, and drinks, and have the neighbors write thank you notes. And when the crisis passes, Klooster wants to work with schools and churches in the area to create a free pantry and library. Klooster adds, “We want to send the message to everyone that when you are able to share and give, to do so.” Other ways you can help and share in your neighborhood include: shopping and running errands for seniors and the disabled; making masks; and donating to other neighborhood pantries throughout the area. Some other fun ideas include: teddy bear sightings in front windows, painted rocks in yards, and chalk sidewalk drawings to view while out walking for exercise while practicing social distancing. Jody Cohen is a local freelance writer and an independent licensed and certified Medicare plans specialist and educator who specializes in helping Arizona seniors and the disabled understand the healthcare options available to them in the Medicare platform. She offers a complimentary, thorough needs analysis and reviews the most cost-efficient plan to ensure that medical needs are met with a preferred provider network, and prescription costs are kept to a minimum. Jody also helps her clients capture all the social programs available to them, and advocates to protect their rights. CELEBRATIONS HONOR LOCAL TEACHERS, 2020 GRADUATES THIS SCHOOL YEAR WILL END UNLIKE ANY OTHER BEFORE IT. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be memorable. At a time that families are usually marking Teacher Appreciation Week and graduations, typical celebrations will be cancelled or postponed and the future of them remain unclear. To ensure that both educators and graduates have a memorable May, Expect More Arizona, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization, is rallying the state behind two special days: • Tuesday, May 5, 2020 – Arizona Teacher Appreciation Day • Wednesday, May 20, 2020 – Arizona Graduate Recognition Day “Our teachers are amazing in normal times, but this spring has brought unique challenges,” says Christine Thompson, president and CEO of Expect More Arizona. “The sacrifices of time and emotional burden have been great as they adapted to distance learning. We want every educator in the state to feel honored.” School closures have placed new burdens on educators as they transitioned from teaching in classrooms to teaching online or through paper packets. They’re
“Graduation ceremonies are an important milestone in a student’s life, whether it’s kindergarten or a Ph.D.,” Thompson adds. “They’re a rite of passage, particularly for students who are first generation graduates, those who overcame unique burdens and those who accomplished their academic goals. To help the community rally behind local teachers and graduates, Expect More Arizona has compiled creative ways to get involved.

AVOIDING THE PAIN OF PROBATE By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
P
robate is a court proceeding used to settle the estate of someone who has no will. However, a person that has a will may also end up in probate court. That’s because a will doesn’t transfer a person’s assets to his or her heirs automatically – it only asks the court to appoint your executor to handle your estate and tells your executor how to distribute your estate. Probate is time consuming and expensive for a personal representative or executor. It can be an agonizing and long, drawn out procedure. But it is avoidable – with the right estate planning tools, and specifically with the Revocable Living Trust. On your death, your heirs must settle your estate, and unless you have the right plan in place, that may mean going to court to file probate. Probate can be very burdensome for the person you have chosen to take care of your affairs (called the personal representative in Arizona, but similar to the executor, as it’s named in many states). So what should you do if you want to avoid court and make things easier on those who will wrap up your estate? The best way to avoid probate is to use a Revocable Living Trust for your estate planning. A trust isn’t just for the wealthy. Everyday people who want to simplify their affairs after death can do so with a trust. In addition to avoiding court on your death, it can avoid court proceedings when you are alive and can no longer manage your affairs because of incapacity. In the trust, you name the person who will step in to manage your trust (your successor trustee), and when you are incapacitated, or at your death, your successor steps in to manage the trust.
$2, I went ahead and got a copy of the will. The clerk will email it to me later today.” Wow. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want people to be able to get information about my affairs that easily! In many cases, not only is the will public, but a list of assets and the appraised amount must also be filed. If maintaining your privacy and that of your heirs is important to you, you want to avoid probate with a Revocable Living Trust. If you are ready to put a proper estate plan in place – one that avoids probate and makes it easier for someone to manage your assets if you are incapacitated – give me a call at 602-375-6752 or email me at Libby@libbybanks. com. As of this writing, we are offering our free initial consultations by Zoom, FaceTime, other online options, and by phone.

Another reason many want to avoid probate is that it’s a public proceeding. I didn’t realize just how public and how easy it was to get information until I asked my administrative assistant to check on a case. A few minute later he came in and said, “Since it was only northtatumtimes.com

SIMPLE WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
D
ue to our ever-changing health situation, now more than ever, we must protect and enhance our immune system. Our immune system can be hindered by preexisting illnesses, inflammation, stress, diet and nutrient deficiencies. There are simple ways to enhance your immunity to keep you and your family healthy during the entire year.
SLEEP Sleep is extremely important for the immune system and it is often sacrificed when we are busy with everyday life. I encourage at least eight hours or more of sleep per night. I also suggest eliminating electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed. If you need to be on electronic devices, it is a good idea to invest in a pair of blue light blocking glasses to help block the stimulatory effects the light has on your brain. Find a healthy sleep routine for you and your family to ensure restful sleep.
DIET/NUTRITION Food can be a major source of inflammation or anti-inflammation depending on what you eat. I recommend fueling your body with nutrient dense food such as colorful fruits and vegetables. These colorful foods are high in antioxidants to help the strengthen immunity and provide proper nutritional support. Balanced meals, plenty of water and minimal processed foods are all excellent ways to enhance the immune system. Sugar can directly inhibit immunity and increase inflammation, so I always recommend low sugar diets, especially when we are trying to protect the immune system.
to eliminate stressful events in our life, it is important to learn how to properly manage the stress to keep us healthy.
EXERCISE/STRESS Exercise can directly increase immunity by increasing circulation and stimulating immune cells. Regular, daily activity when you are not sick is essential for the immune system. Exercise can also help us relieve stress. Stress has a negative impact on the immune system and directly decreases our immune response. Although it can difficult
GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM SUPPORT Our digestive system is directly correlated with our immune system. Constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating can all decrease overall immunity. Finding the underlying causes of these symptoms is the first step to decreasing inflammation and supporting the immune system. A high-quality probiotic supplement
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES Nutrient deficiencies are common and can play a big role on how our immune system responds to illnesses. Common deficiencies I typically see are Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Zinc and Vitamin C. It is important to discuss this with your physician or have certain nutrient levels checked. A healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables can help support nutrient deficiencies along with appropriate supplementation.
can be helpful to restore and balance beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal system once the underlying cause of any disruption is identified and supported. Food sensitivities and/or food allergies can also increase inflammation in the gut and cause decreased immunity and should be avoided. SEE YOUR NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN See your naturopathic physician for more individualized support. Underlying health conditions can also affect your immune system. A naturopathic physician can offer a more personalized approach for your specific health care needs.

MAY IS SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: TIPS TO SPOT SKIN CANCER EARLY
By Dr. Pablo Prichard
W
hile skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., when caught early it is almost always curable. There are two different types: melanoma and non-melanoma, which includes basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. By learning these early signs, you’ll be able to catch cancer in its most treatable stage. MELANOMA This is the deadliest form of skin cancer, making it the most important to be aware of. Melanoma can be found anywhere on the body but is most common in areas exposed to the sun including the head, neck, upper back, torso and lower legs. It can appear suddenly or develop from an existing mole. The simplest way to spot melanoma is to follow the “ABCDE” rule. Keep these guidelines in mind when looking at a potentially cancerous area: • Asymmetry: Moles and freckles are typically symmetrical. Make note if the area is now irregular. • Border: If a spot that was once round is now blurred or jagged, it should be looked at by a doctor. northtatumtimes.com
• Color: A mole should be one color. Any lightening or darkening could be a sign of cancer. • Diameter: Any growth larger than a pencil eraser should be examined even if there aren’t other abnormalities. • Elevation: Look for growths that have an uneven surface or irregularity. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA This skin cancer begins in the basal cells, which produce new skin cells as old ones die off. It typically appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin but can also present in other forms. The following could also be signs of basal cell carcinoma: flat, firm, pale areas like a scar; raised red patches, and small translucent bumps that are pink or red or a pearl-like shine. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA Squamous cells make up the outer layer of the skin. This type of cancer often looks like scaly patches or raised growths similar to warts with a lower area in the center. Squamous cell carcinoma is more likely to grow deep and spread locally,
causing tissue destruction, so catching it early is key to a quick recovery. Make it a goal to examine your skin once a month. If you see an area that concerns you, such as any new spots, a sore that won’t heal, or a growth that is itchy, painful or tender, share that with your doctor immediately even if you think it may not be serious. People with lighter skin are more susceptible to skin cancer than people with darker skin, as melanin, the pigment in the skin, is somewhat protective. Still, everyone should avoid the sun as much as possible and wear sunblock when outside. Pablo Prichard, M.D. has been the Chief of Plastic Surgery at HonorHealth John C. MARKET VOLATILITY By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor Affinity Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC
T
he exhilarating anticipation of ticking up the roller coaster is quickly followed by the screams of the downward spiral to its eventual stop. We know the ride, yet we will stay the course because we know the ride will end – not just because we are locked in our seats for the duration. Understanding the outcome helps us tolerate the ride, and even enjoy most of it. But if you add uncertainty, the ride has a different feeling. No matter how often you tell yourself the ride will end, the uncertainty creates emotions. As an investor you may read about the ups and downs of the stock market and it may feel like a roller coaster. History shows us that previous market corrections have ended. Yet even armed with the data, your emotions seem to contradict your good judgement. This internal conflict may cause you to flip day to day from staying the course and ignoring uncertainty or selling off to reduce the risk. If we look at historical charts of the markets, we can project ahead to presume the outcome of the current correction. These rational thoughts of historical data somehow still may not communicate calm to the heart and stomach. Big market moves may seem less tolerable and there is no locking bar to keep us in place. The choice is ever constant - stay the course or stop the uneasiness. Will data or emotions rule your decision? This is volatility. Volatility is a statistical measure of 10 • May 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
standard deviation or dispersion of returns. What it means to you is the experience of the daily fluctuations of your holdings or your account balance. It creates emotions as we see what has happened and we project the uncertainty in our thoughts of what is yet to come. Did you know that the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) created a volatility index (VIX), which is a measurement of the markets expected future volatility? Does your financial advisor discuss volatility with you and prepare you for market corrections? To you, market volatility may be very strong emotions of the threat of losing something important to you. Money helps provide a lifestyle and sense of security, which is important to most of us. When you feel threatened by the risk of reduced purchasing power or the ability to protect those people or things important to you, the feeling is real. In the world of investments, volatility may challenge one’s ability to accept risk or tolerate the volatility. It is important to understand one’s own risk tolerance to identify how much to accept or how much risk to avoid. A common practice before developing an investment portfolio is to quantify your risk by completing a risk questionnaire or risk quiz to determine your personal risk tolerance. Your personal risk tolerance is the amount of volatility you are willing to accept. Market volatility as we have recently experienced may cause you to rethink what you are truly willing to accept in relation to risk. A word of caution – risk tolerance should not be tied to short-term experiences or emotions. Risk tolerance is a representation of your willingness to accept risk, or volatility. During periods
of volatility, some are inclined to second-guess their risk tolerance. Financial experts encourage investors to make long-term decisions not market cycle decisions. If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act. Time in the market has historically offered greater success than timing the markets. What you may not know is that risk is something you can control. How? By aligning your values, goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon to develop a riskmitigated portfolio that is reflective of these in order to reduce your exposure to volatility. Diversification – not having all your eggs in one basket - can help mitigate risk. What is diversification though? Is diversification having accounts at different institutions? Or is it having several managers? Or is diversification having different asset classes for asset allocation? At the highest-level, diversification begins with a mix of stocks and bonds. A moderate investor, let’s call them Ed and Joan, may decide that a 50/50 allocation suits their risk tolerance, provides adequate return to maintain their lifestyle, and helps them stay aligned to their values (family, security, health, spirituality, and autonomy). In theory, having one stock and one bond would meet the 50/50 allocation. But common sense says that’s not enough “eggs.” To diversify the bonds, Ed and Joan may purchase Treasuries, Corporates, Municipals, or Emerging Market debt, to name a few. To diversify stocks, they may purchase Large Capitalized companies (big companies), Mid Cap, Small northtatumtimes.com
COVER STORY
Cap, Foreign, or Emerging Markets for example. In addition, Ed and Joan may be interested in holding companies in different industries or sectors such as financials, utilities, healthcare, technology, healthcare, to name a few for further diversification.
“
Returning to the questions of appropriate diversification, it is not the number of institutions, because if
can help you diversify in a meaningful way. In addition, an adequate cash reserve can help you maintain the integrity of your well-diversified portfolio to ride through market corrections.
Cash reserves are meant to handle emergencies and, during your distribution phase of life, to provide comfort in knowing you won’t need to sell during downturns to meet your living needs. Being prepared for market corrections (there will be another one) can help you remember what is important to you and maintain your strategy for financial comfort during market volatility.
If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act.
each institution is doing the same thing, there is no diversification. As you can see, this also explains why simply using different managers may not meet your diversification needs. If they are all managing to a similar style, they are all doing the same thing just in different locations. What does this mean to you? Having a clear understanding of what your money is meant to do for you
”
When thinking about risk acceptance consider what your goals are and what is important to you. Align those with your risk tolerance. As you look at managing your fears volatility, keep in mind that mindset can play an important role in your investment ride. Find a trusted financial advisor who can balance emotional responses to market conditions, current events, and personal life changes with knowledge of past market responses and ways to manage risks. This will
help keep you focused on your long-term goals with increased confidence of success. TOP BBQ ISLAND COMPONENTS THAT EVERY HARDSCAPE NEEDS Contributed by BBQ Island
W
ith the weather near perfect outside, it’s the ideal time to create a beautiful and functional outdoor cooking space. We’ve put together a list of all of the necessities with a few luxury additions for the more adventurous cooks. THE GRILL: Let’s start with the obvious. The grill sets the pace for the rest of the island. DOORS AND DRAWERS: A necessity and musthave on any island. It is code to have access to the interior of an island for emergency gas shut offs; also, for installation purposes and running the lines. Combination units are best if you have the room. Now for the fun stuff… REFRIGERATORS: One of the most common luxury components to have in an island. Do not look for the cheapest refrigerator or you’ll run into issues. Make sure it is UL-outdoor rated. DROP-IN COOLERS: This is a great alternative to refrigerators.
ISLAND BUILT-IN LIGHTS: Cooking in the dark is never fun and can kill the atmosphere. Make sure your island is lit with mounted hardwired lights. TRASH ROLLOUTS/CHUTES: It helps aesthetically by relieving you of an external trashcan sitting around while also removing the unpleasantries of odor issues and bug attraction. PAPER TOWEL DISPENSER: One of the easiest things to make room for and well worth it. Every grill expert knows how important paper towels can be. SIDE BURNERS AND POWER BURNERS: This helps to keep all the cooking to the island. For instance, if you have side dishes in pans, pots, or griddles you need to cook up, you don’t have to use the stove inside. BEVERAGE CENTERS/SINKS: This is a highly underestimated feature that can be a huge help for cleaning up as well as making drinks. PIZZA OVENS: These bring ultimate ambiance while impressing all the neighbors.
VENTS: Creating airflow helps with the overall performance of the grill and circulates the heat. After all, we’re trying to cook the food, not ourselves. After going through the must-haves, be sure not to go overboard with decor and appliances. Make room for what is essential and necessary to give you space for cooking and entertaining without added clutter. Happy cooking!

HOLLY’S HOUSING NEWS: LOOK FOR THE POSITIVE
Largest Iron Door Showroom in Arizona
By Holly Henbest
T
he Henbest Team has been what we now refer to as “Business As Unusual.” We are listing homes, showing homes and selling homes, but everything we do has an added step or several steps and we’ve had to adjust our processes. Our listings now feature 3-D tours, in addition to our standard videos and lifestyle photography, and we are ensuring safety protocol during staging, photo shoots, showings, inspections and final walk-throughs. The bottom line is that we are here for you, our clients and business partners. While there is a lot we can do virtually, we are also now engaging in more extensive communication via phone calls and FaceTime, and meeting our clients when necessary. We’ve also been reporting the facts regarding the housing market, so we hope you’ll follow us on social media for updates – Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have regular updates regarding real estate and the economy. One thing that has really hit home (pun intended) during this time is just how much we love where we live. We are doing all we can to fully enjoy our home and neighborhood, which provides so much to be thankful for. We can walk outside our front door and enjoy beautiful scenery for walks or bike rides, we’re nearby fabulous restaurants for curbside pick-up, and we’re close to great hiking. We feel lucky every day to living in our wonderful community and we’re also doing all we can to support our community. To commemorate this time in our lives, my son and I recently participated in the Arizona Front Porch Project. We wanted our photos to be a bit of a time capsule to remember this experience. We included puzzles, my laptop with Zoom, paper goods, and other memory items like my bike because I’ve been biking all over our area, and my son northtatumtimes.com
Over 500 Doors In Stock! wore his bathrobe because that’s how it’s been around our home. We also featured my personal “Quarantheme” which is “Look For The Blooms.” It’s been our goal to look for the positive and create positive experiences for others. We’ve been paying it forward by supporting local businesses and charitable organizations. To start, we’ve been sending messages to our clients via @azsidewalksmiles (on Instagram) and they chalked the message on my driveway too. We also partnered with Il Bosco Pizza (best pizza in town) to deliver dinner to the clinical department at Mayo Hospital. If you’d like to take a snapshot of you in front of your home, we recommend visiting arizonafrontporchproject.com.

LOCAL
SIX WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES IN A TIME OF NEED By Jackie Wright of Rainmaker Integrated
I
t’s no secret that businesses of all shapes and sizes are struggling right now. The recent pandemic has virtually put the world as we know it on hold, resulting in revenue and product losses for many business owners. However, as we all continue to ride out the COVID-19 storm, there are a number of things you can do to help support your favorite local business and keep them going strong until this pandemic ends.
1. BUY LOCAL PRODUCTS. The best way to keep revenue going for a small business owner is to make it a priority to buy the products and/or services that they offer. If they are not open daily, call and ask if you buy something online or for pick-up. Always look for local options, even if a national chain is more convenient. 2. INQUIRE ABOUT RENTALS. Establishments like gyms, fitness studios, outdoor suppliers, and sewing shops have a ton of equipment that is collecting dust right now. To help them drive more revenue, and meet your needs, ask if you can rent some of the tools they offer to use at home until they open again.
3. REQUEST A DIY OPTION. Sure, it’s great to get your hair and nails done at the salon, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Ask if you can get your beauty products to use at home and if your stylist would be willing to do a FaceTime or Zoom call to help you through the application process.
4. GIFT CARDS. Eventually, we will get back to normal, and when that happens, it will be the perfect time to share your favorite local haunt with your friends and colleagues. Consider buying gift cards now that you can give as gifts throughout the year. This will supply the business a needed influx of cash while allowing you to get your gift giving shopping done all at one time. 5. PLAN FOR THE FUTURE. One thing Americans are really good at is throwing a party. Once these discouraging times are over, it will be the perfect opportunity to gather with everyone and celebrate— which means you’re going to need party planning supplies. Start planning now by buying what you’ll need for the ultimate post-pandemic bash. Securing catering and event space or making restaurant reservations will allow you and your favorite local business to keep sight of the light at the end of the tunnel.
The Intelligent Choice For All Your Air Conditioning & Plumbing Needs
6. SHARE THE LOVE. Generosity goes a long way in a time of need. If you go to a restaurant or bar or order delivery, consider being a little more generous with your tip. A bigger tip may not directly contribute to a restaurant’s bottom line. Still, it will help service staff and ultimately contribute to the spirit of goodwill and appreciation in the community, which can help with everyone’s mood.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF CORONAVIRUS IN YOUR VEHICLE By NuVinAir
W
hile the world seems to be spinning out of control around us, it is time we take back ownership of those things that are within our power to control. Since so many of us are now working from and spending more time at home, we can make sure our environment is as healthy as we can make it, especially in our vehicles.
Experts have now determined that coronavirus can remain active on plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours, and we certainly know that our vehicles are made up of plenty of those surfaces. The good news is that the virus can be effectively inactivated if the surfaces are properly cleaned. VEHICLE HOTSPOTS Kelly Blue Book suggests that car owners, dealerships, rental car companies and ride share entities use hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes to wipe down the interior of a vehicle and any other area that could be considered a high-touch area such as steering wheels, door handles, control buttons, seat belts, mirrors and radios. However, even if used correctly and frequently, these wipes are normally unable to reach far enough into porous surfaces such as upholstery and nooks and crannies to
address the contaminants embedded in those materials and areas. The contaminants embedded in hard-to-reach areas can contribute to the residual less-than-clean smell of the vehicle. PRODUCTS TO USE AND AVOID Alcohol solutions that contain at least 70 percent alcohol are effective against coronavirus, according to the CDC. Whatever you do, don’t use bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the inside of your car, as they will likely damage your car’s upholstery. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners on car touch screens, as they can damage their anti-glare coating.
ASK YOUR DEALERSHIP OR LOCAL AUTO SERVICE-RELATED BUSINESS Check with your local dealership, auto detailer, service center or car wash to see if they are offering any type of healthy vehicle program or proprietary product line that is designed to clean both the air and surfaces inside your vehicle. Even during stay-at-home orders, they may be offering mobile detailing or cleaning services to meet your needs. You can trust that your local auto business has strongly vetted any product that it offers, which can give you confidence in a healthier commute for you and your family.
