PROJECT VETERANS PRIDE – THE JAMES WALTON HOME

I

t’s hard to believe that those who put themselves on the front lines and risk their lives for our country during their US military service are over 50 more likely to become homeless and to experience homelessness longer than non-veterans. Yet of the 23 million military veterans in the United States, 529,000 to 840,000 are homeless at some time during the year.

In Arizona, there are approximately 1,036 homeless and jobless veterans. These somber statistics show the harsh realities that those in the military face upon discharge due lack of family and support networks, shortage of affordable housing, PTSD, and other barriers.

One local Valley non-profit seeks to change all of this.

Project Veteran’s Pride (PVP) is 501( c )3 organization founded by military veterans in 2011 with the mission to end veteran homelessness by creating a well-balanced environment that will restore the pride and dignity of those who served our country so that they can return as self-sufficient and productive members of society.

Through the James Walton Home (JWH), PVP provides homeless veterans with a comprehensive 30/60/90 program that gives them a “hand up” to do just that.

Opened in 2013, The James Walton Home is a transitional home that can house up to twenty homeless veterans per day in a safe, home-like environment where they complete the innovative PVP program.

Residents are referred to JWH through the VA after a thorough vetting process. New residents are greeted with a warm handshake or hug, then given a day’s rest to decompress. After this, they will use their time at the JWH to get needed medical treatment through the VA, obtain job training, and seek permanent employment and housing.

Residents are also given household responsibilities which empowers them with a sense of duty and

responsibility. Their stay at the James Walton Home will last up to 90 days.

“Our residents really do enjoy their responsibilities,” says Dr. Christeen Verchot, retired United States Air Force LTC, President of Project Veteran’s Pride, and Executive Director of the James Walton Home. “Their time of military service was led by structure and accountability, and they’re able regain that here, which will prepare them for success after their stay at The James Walton Home.”

And the program WORKS. Since the first resident arrived on Veteran’s Day in 2013, over 650 now-formerly-homeless veterans have graduated the program. 91 have continued to live off the street. 79 are employed, while others have returned to living with their families and restoring those relationships.

Dr. Verchot and her team stay in touch with their former residents, ensuring that they’ll always have a network to turn to. On June 21, they will reunite with ten James Walton Home graduates at the Dressing Vets for Success, the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. Locally-owned Ceiphers Clothing hosts and produces the event, which showcases graduates of the James Walton Home modeling “Job Ready” Ceiphers Clothing looks. The event will also feature live entertainment, a raffle and live auction, and more.

All proceeds will benefit PVP. Tickets are currently on sale, and sponsorship and raffle donation opportunities are also available.

The plan is for Renew Phoenix, a joint venture between Generated Materials Recovery and Renewlogy, to work together to build a facility to process the materials on the city’s Resource Innovation Campus.

“I am excited for what this partnership brings to Phoenix,” said Councilman Michael Nowakowski, whose district is home to the city’s Resource Innovation Campus. “This new, innovative venture will encourage other businesses to bring-next generation technology to Phoenix to help us reach our diversion goal of 40 percent by 2020.”

Renew Phoenix was selected through a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Their plan is to use a proprietary chemical recycling process to reverse the plastic back into its basic molecular structure, which will allow them to convert the plastic waste into fuel. Renew Phoenix will also bring as many as 15 full-time jobs to the valley, after investing more than five million dollars in capital to the project.

“Renewlogy is excited about bringing our technology to Phoenix and creating a more circular economy around plastic waste locally,” said Priyanka Bakaya, Founder and CEO of Renewlogy.

“Phoenix will serve as a model for cities around the country looking for local solutions for plastic waste.”

Once at full production, the project is expected to divert ten tons per day of mixed plastic waste, which equates to 60 barrels of liquid fuel. This partnership will not only help Phoenix, but the Valley altogether. Renew Phoenix will be able to scale their production to allow regional remanufacturing of Plastics 3-7 to be processed as well.

“We are proud to continue bucking the trend and pushing forward with innovation, economic development and repurposing our waste,” said Ginger Spencer, city of Phoenix Public Works Director. “We are committed to building a circular economy and achieving our Reimagine Phoenix goals. This new venture to turn plastics into fuel is eyeopening and we hope it will serve as a model for other cities to reimagine their own recycling programs.”

PHOENIX RAISES MINIMUM PAY FOR EMPLOYEES TO PROVIDE LIVABLE WAGE

The recommendation, passed by a unanimous vote of the City Council, positions the City to better compete for talent in a competitive job market and ensures that people who provide frontline customer support in a variety of roles in the organization are compensated fairly.

“Phoenix City Council’s unanimous action yesterday to guarantee a $15 minimum wage for our employees was a huge win for working families,” said District 5 Councilwoman Vania Guevara. “It’s exciting to see our City leading by example, making sure our employees are paid a wage that allows them to provide for their families, save for the future, and invest in themselves and their community.”

The change in the minimum wage grew out of a collaborative discussion between city leadership and one of the City’s employee labor groups, LiUNA Local 777. LiUNA represents city employees in Unit 1, holding unskilled and semi-skilled posi-

tions. Applied to all employees, the increase would also affect positions represented by Unit 2 (trades workers) and Unit 3 (clerical workers) across the organization.

“Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour for the men and women who work at the City of Phoenix is life changing. These employees work tirelessly each day for the community and deserve to be paid a livable wage,” said Jennifer Grondahl, Secretary, LiUNA Local 777.

“We are thrilled with the Mayor and Council’s unanimous vote for a $15 an hour minimum wage at the city. It truly shows the dedication of Mayor Gallego and the City Council in making sure Phoenix is a leader among cities to establish a living wage for all,” said Frank Piccioli, President AFSCME Local 2960 “This is a step in the right direction in ensuring we offer our employees proper livable wages,” said District 7 Coun-

The state minimum wage in Arizona is currently set at $11 per hour and applied to Phoenix employees before the new Council action took effect.

ARIZONA RANKS IN TOP 5 STATES FOR PERSONAL INCOME GROWTH ARIZONA RANKED FIFTH IN THE UNITED STATES FOR PERSONAL INCOME GROWTH IN 2018, ACCORDING TO A REPORT RELEASED BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS. Personal income grew 5.5 percent in Arizona, beating the national average of 4.5 percent.

Earnings were the leading contributor to personal income growth in 2018. Arizona’s net earnings increased by 5.8 percent from 2017 to 2018, the fourth fastest

rate in the nation. Construction, health care and social assistance; finance and insurance; professional, scientific, and technical services; and administrative and waste management services were the largest contributors to earnings growth from 2017 to 2018. “Arizona’s booming economy is delivering larger paychecks for workers and families,” said Governor Doug Ducey.

“Over the last year, personal income in Arizona increased at one of the fastest rates in the nation — and well above the national average — thanks to the hard

work of job creators, entrepreneurs and employees.

Arizona will continue to focus on setting the best economic environment to continue bringing more jobs and opportunity to our state.”

Arizona’s median household incomes recently reached a record high of $61,125. Over 290,400 new jobs have been added since 2015, and a recent report by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity projected Arizona will add more than 165,000 new jobs by 2020.

NEW ONLINE ADOT LITTER HOTLINE WEBSITE MAKES REPORTING EVEN EASIER THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S LITTER HOTLINE HAS A NEW ONLINE HOME THAT MAKES IT EVEN EASIER FOR THE PUBLIC TO REPORT DRIVERS WHO THROW TRASH OUT OF VEHICLES ON STATE HIGHWAYS. Litter.AZ.gov allows witnesses to quickly share what they’ve seen through an automated chat feature.

The site asks for just a few details, including license plate number, location, time and type of litter.

The mission of ADOT’s Litter Hotline,

which also is available by calling the toll-free phone number 877.3LITTER (877.354.8837), is public awareness rather than law enforcement.

With information reported by witnesses, ADOT sends a letter to the vehicle’s registered owner with a reminder that littering is illegal and can result in a $500 fine when spotted by law enforcement. The letter notes that it costs more than $4 million a year to remove litter from Arizona’s highways and that roadside trash makes a poor impression on visitors and residents.

The recipient also receives a litter bag suitable for an automobile.

ADOT issued more than 1,200 letters in the past year based on Litter Hotline reports.

The Litter Hotline’s new online reporting tool has another benefit: Its database will allow ADOT to better understand littering trends by tracking the location and time of each report.

ADOT welcomes litter reports even if witnesses miss a license plate number.

While a letter can’t go out in those cases, knowing where and when the littering occurred is helpful.

MARICOPA IS FASTEST-GROWING U.S. COUNTY IN 2018 FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR MARICOPA COUNTY REMAINED THE FASTESTGROWING U.S. COUNTY FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, ADDING 81,244 NEW RESIDENTS IN 2018, ACCORDING TO THE U.S. CENSUS BUREAU POPULATION ESTIMATES. The county population tops 4,410,824 million. Maricopa is the fourth most populous U.S. County.

The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area was second in population growth over 2017 adding 96,000 new residents to bring the Valley’s population to 4.86 million in 2018. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas, was the fastest-growing metro, adding nearly 132,000 new residents in year-over-year data.

“One interesting trend we are seeing this year is that metro areas not among the most populous are ranked in the top 10 for population growth,” said Sandra Johnson, a demographer in the Census Bureau’s Population Division. “Though no new metro areas moved into the top 10 largest areas, Phoenix, Seattle, Austin, and Orlando all experienced numeric increases in population since 2010, rivaling growth

in areas with much larger populations. This trend is consistent with the overall growth we are seeing in the south and the west.”

The metro area population gain, equal to almost twice the population increase for entire states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, was not quite enough for the Valley to move past BostonCambridge-Newton Massachusetts-New Hampshire metro area. Boston metro’s population grew nearly 31,000 to 4,875,390, just 17,400 people more than Phoenix’s 4,857,962 in 2018.

In the 2020 Census, Phoenix is likely to pass Boston and become the 10th largest U.S. metro area. In 2017, the Valley passed the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA, metro area to become the 11th largest U.S. metro.

According to the Census, eight of the ten fastestgrowing counties were in the west. The other two were in Florida. The population estimates found that 45 percent of U.S. counties experienced no population change or population declined.

The Valley’s population spurt means on average 263 people choose to live among the 22 Valley cities every day. Individual city population estimates are due in early May. Santa Cruz and Cochise were the only Arizona counties to lose population, and Apache, Gila, Graham and Greenlee showed no population change.

Among counties, Maricopa County was second in population growth between 2010 and 2018.

Harris County (Houston), Texas, added 604,431 new residents over the eight-year span, compared to Maricopa County’s 593,465 new residents in the same period. Harris County has a population of 4.7 million compared to Maricopa’s 4.4 million.

Population estimates are generated annually by the Census Bureau based on a variety of sources. The numbers represent net population changes based on births, deaths, in- and out-migration.

PHOENIX POLICE SHOOTINGS REPORT RELEASED

THE PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASED A HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL INDEPENDENT STUDY REPORT ON LAST YEAR’S DRAMATIC SPIKE IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTINGS.

The report made nine recommendations, including taking steps to track how often police point their guns at suspects, regardless of shots being fired, and taking a stronger role in sharing data with the community.

The 66-page report by the National Police Foundation was created through statistics as well as interviews with the community and officers alike.

Fortunately, the study did not find any major issues with the department’s training and policies.

The study, which was requested by Chief Jeri Williams, was approved and funded ($150,000.00) by the Phoenix City Council in July of 2018. By the end of that same year, Phoenix officer involved shootings had reached a record 44. From 2009 to 2017, the department averaged 21 officer-involved shootings.

“We found no evidence in our review that policy or training is flawed or misguided and in fact found that PPD executive staff have taken many reasonable steps to strengthen both policy and training,” it said in the Key Findings and Recommendations section.

Where the study did find fault was in a disconnect between police and the public.

“Our discussions with the community and review of PPD actions revealed a lack of transparency on the part of PPD and a lack of trust between PPD and the community that may be inhibiting transparency,” it said.

The 23 fatalities from last year’s shootings were the highest across the nation. Los Angeles Police Department was second with 14. Philadelphia, San Antonio and San Diego (all similarly populated cities) combined only reached 30.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUMMER PROGRAM FOR YOUR CHILD

W

ith the school year winding down and summer vacation approaching, parents are looking for summer programs for their kids. For parents who are experiencing this process for the first time, the options can be almost overwhelming: sports camps, arts camps, language camps, academic-based camps, and more. Some camps, such as those offered by a city’s parks and recreation department, are strictly summer programs that cover a selection of activities.

Other camps are offshoots of a core business (such as a gymnastics studio that offers a summer program).

With so many options, choosing a summer program can be tricky. As an educator (and a parent), I’ve found it helpful to consider the purpose that drives the choice. Rather than simply selecting the camp that sounds like it’s the most fun, you might consider what you want to accomplish for your child: Do you want to hone her already-strong soccer skills - or let her try her hand at basketball? Do you

want to get him off the court and into the computer lab – or off the couch and into the swimming pool? Are you interested in sharpening a young mind, or strengthening a young body?

Some camps are singularly focused on one type of activity, such as learning a foreign language. Other programs offer exposure to a mix of activities. And both approaches can be wonderful, providing that your choice aligns with your goals. A summer swim program can be a good way to help a child build confidence (away from their peers). A group camp or sports camp, however, can help nudge a child toward socialization and interaction with their peers. It is not uncommon for parents to use a summer program as a way to help a young child make the transition from home to school.

If you haven’t thought of summer camp as a means to help reach a certain goal for your child, that’s OK. It’s perfectly fine to select a program designed to simply let a kid be a kid while experiencing the sheer joy of summer. You may find that’s all your kiddo really needs!

At the March 11 Governing Board business meeting, the Governing Board approved the hiring of Mr. Jim Swetter for the principal position at Cactus Shadows High School, Dr. Patty Jensen for principal at Lone Mountain Elementary School and Mr. Aaron Pettinato for principal at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School.

He has earned a Master of Arts in Education; Administration and Supervision and a Master of Arts in Education; Curriculum and Instruction (2008); both from the University of Phoenix.

Mr. Swetter is currently serving as the interim-principal at Cactus Shadows High School for the 2018-2019 school year. Previously, he was the Assistant Principal for Operations and Athletics at Cactus Shadows and prior to that, he was the Dean of Students. He came

Dr. Jensen is coming to CCUSD from Texas where she has served as an elementary school principal for the past seven years. She earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Foundations in 2011 from Illinois State University. Her research

focuses on how to implement successful two-way dual language programs at the elementary school level.

She has received a number of awards throughout her career, including a six-star distinction for her school by the State of Texas in 2017-2018. As flattering as these honors have been, Dr. Jensen believes that the purpose of elementary education is to ensure all students have access to an exceptional learning environment that recognizes their strengths, builds on them, and, thus, prepares them for the future.

Mr. Pettinato is currently serving as the interim principal for Horseshoe Trails Elementary School for the remainder of the 2018-2019 school year. He has been a CCUSD employee since 2006, beginning his educator career as a student teacher in a fourth/fifth grade combination

classroom at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School. He was hired as a teacher at HTES that year and taught fifth and sixth grades at HTES for 10 years. He was promoted to Dean of Students at Cactus Shadows High School in 2016. Mr. Pettinato has two MA degrees from ASU, one in Elementary Education and a second in Educational Leadership. He is a graduate of the 2014-2015 CCUSD Aspiring Administrators Academy and has been a coach, trainer and valued member of many site and district committees. He is among the first group of educators to travel to China to help launch the Chinese Immersion program at HTES. He received the District’s highest recognition as a recipient of the Helping Us Grow Award (H.U.G.) in 2010.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE SOMEBODY

ew things hold the power to render a person invisible. Homelessness is one of them.

As a homeless person confronts society’s perception of their worth, they experience a radical shift in their identity. They struggle with basic life questions such as who they are and what the future will bring.

There isn’t a person in the world who doesn’t want to be someone, to have significance and be considered worthy and valued by others. Everybody wants to be somebody.

“One day I was putting gas in my car when I witnessed a homeless man asking if he could wash car windows for money. People would yell at him and push him away.

As he walked towards me with his head down, I was expecting him to ask to wash my windows. I was going to say yes, but he kept walking. As he passed me, I asked if he could wash my windows

and he said, ‘Yes.’ After he was done he started walking away, not even asking for money. This took me by surprise. But I felt he did a service and should be rewarded.

I called him over to pay him. His eyes opened wide and I could just see the joy on his face. I checked my wallet and all I had was a $10 bill. My first thought was ‘$10 for a simple window wash seems too much,’ but I looked at the bigger picture. Do I need that $10 more than he does? And my answer was no. I felt he needed it more than I did. So I gave it to him and he said that it was too much and he couldn’t accept it. But I insisted. The look on his face will be something I’ll never forget.”

When people feel disconnected, they feel a sense of worthlessness.

“He told me it would take about 2-3 days worth of

washing windows to make $10 and was very grateful. He gave me a hug and I could see other people staring, but I didn’t mind. I helped the man out with what I could. As amazing as that felt, what happened after made me feel so much happier. People would go up to him and give him money without him doing anything. Some of them were the same people who were yelling at him. That’s when I realized sometimes all it takes is just one person to start something, and I could be that first person.”

To be a person of influence, you simply need to care about people. Everybody needs somebody to connect with and help them grow.

“I felt for that man. And even though I’ve never been homeless or put in the position he was in, I could relate to him.”

Everybody wants to be somebody. Today, take a long look at everyone you encounter and help them be the somebody they want to become. Once this becomes a fundamental way of viewing others you meet, you will become a person of influence.

WHY STEM SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR KIDS

s a parent of school age children, you’ve probably heard people touting the wonders and importance of STEM education for kids. But what is STEM and why is it so important for your kid to get up to speed on it? STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. A good understanding of these areas of study can help your child have a better understanding of how our world works today and give them an edge when then eventually enter the workforce as an adult.

WHY STEM SUBJECTS ARE IMPORTANT STEM learning can help build a child’s critical thinking skills, sense of curiosity, creativity, and an understanding of technology and the scientific method while discovering new things. STEM education typically presents real-world scenarios that kids can work on, study and solve with a hands-on, scientific approach. These skills are important elements of “learning how to learn,” which is a critical element of most solution-oriented, not to mention higher paying, jobs.

A study by the U.S. Department of Commerce showed that occupations involving STEM are growing at 17 percent, while occupations in other fields are growing at less than 10 percent.

The study also showed that people who have a degree in a STEM field generally have a higher income than those who are involved in other careers. People in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math play an essential role in sustaining the current U.S. economy, and will likely remain a critical component well into the future.

Bottom line, a focus on STEM education gives kids the edge they need to flourish in growing career fields. • Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence. This organization exposes kids to STEM-related activities during out-of-school time, to allow them to learn experientially. Kids engage in hands-on activities that require the practical but fun application of con-

cepts learned in the classroom, in an after school environment.

• Arizona STEM Adventure. This all-volunteer run event brings together students and professionals to give kids a hands on experience with a STEM professional and motivate students to enter the world of STEM. The next Arizona STEM Adventure will take place on November 16th, 2019, at the Pima Community College, Northwest Campus.

There are loads of resources in the Phoenix area to help make STEM education fun and relevant to your children. Do your homework and take steps to get your kids interested in science, technology, engineering, and math – these subjects are important for everyone’s future. THE 10 MOST DELICIOUS DAYS THIS SEASON: ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEK RETURNS MAY 17-26

F

or dining enthusiasts, spring in Arizona is a delicious time. The season is sprinkled with some of the best culinary events throughout the state — including Arizona Restaurant Week, which gives Valley foodies a taste of the local dining scene at its finest. Presented by the Arizona Restaurant Association, this spring’s Arizona Restaurant Week spans 10 days, from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 26, and offers diners a chance to sample prix-fixe menus from local hidden gems to some of the finest dining establishments in the state.

Considered the “most edible time of year,” this season marks the 12th anniversary of Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW), an event which was established to allow restaurants around the state to showcase their culinary chops (many restaurants features dishes during this time that are not on their usual menus) and give diners an opportunity to experience an extraordinary culinary journey that they’ve not yet had the chance to explore. According to Steve Chucri, President and CEO of the Arizona Restaurant Association, another goal of ARW is to solidify Arizona’s position as one of the country’s top culinary destinations by increasing awareness of the nearly 9,000 dining opportunities available throughout the state and also stimulate business for restaurants around Arizona. In fact, participating establishments report an average 20 percent

increase in sales during Arizona Restaurant Week.

“Each year we are delighted by the growth of the event not only in restaurant participation in Phoenix and around the entire state, but also in the attendance during these 10 days of dining,” Chucri says. “We are proud to be among the organizations that are dedicated to elevating our state’s culinary scene into the spotlight — and that the state’s culinary status is being so well received by our locals and visitors, too.”

Much has changed since the event’s inception in 2008, including the addition of both a spring and a fall Arizona Restaurant Week. The event began with Fall Arizona Restaurant Week, but due to popular demand Spring Arizona Restaurant Week was introduced in 2011. However, one thing hasn’t changed – the format that offers an incredibly budget-friendly way for dinners to experience a fabulous meal at a fraction of what they might normally pay. Each participating establishment offers a three-course prix-fixe menu for just $33 or $44 per person or per couple, depending on the restaurant and its offerings. Restaurants also have the option to include a non-alcoholic beverage within that price and some feature wine pairings for an additional cost. While restaurant’s regular menus are available during Arizona Restaurant Week, many of the ARW dishes are only available during this time — so it’s best to take advantage of these culinary creations while they last!

Currently, there are more than 110 restaurant locations participating in this year’s Spring ARW, and that list is continually growing. Among this number, there is a great selection of restaurants which have been involved since the event’s beginning and many are first-timers, too. Inclusive for all diners, there are vegetarian, gluten-free and other offerings specific to dietary needs available on ARW menus (and are noted online at www.arizonarestaurantweek.com).

Some of the highlights this spring include: HEARTH 61 Located within the Mountain Shadows Resort, Hearth 61’s culinary prowess is the brainchild of renowned local chef Charles Wiley. The ingredient-driven cuisine is a true treat on any given night, but the ARW menu is not to be missed. For $44 per person, guests can choose from starters such as the Local Beet Salad, Chilled Pea Soup and Jacob Bean Ragout and entrees including Soft Shell Crab with spring succotash; Niman Ranch Prime Tenderloin of Beef with bleu cheese fondue truffled mash; or Mushroom Tortellini with prosciutto and Parmigiano-Reggiano brodo. To finish the meal, diners can select from the Yuzu Crème Brulee with sesame shortbread and apricot jam; Warm

Chocolate Lava Cake with vanilla crème anglaise and apple butter gelato; or Bananas Foster Brioche Bread Pudding with rum caramel and sticky toffee gelato.

MARCELLINO RISTORANTE Italian flavor and flare come to life at Scottsdale’s Marcellino Ristorante. The nightly cuisine regularly features showstoppers such as handcrafted flavored pastas from saffron to squid ink, fresh crustaceans, wild game, seasonal truffles and more. Chef Marcellino’s talent and passion is evident on each plate, including tempting dishes on his ARW menu. For $44 (plus) per person, guests can choose from Antipasto including Insalata Organiche; Bufala Mozzarella and Prosciutto; Bresaola; or Zuppa Del Giorno (vegetarian-based soups of the day). “Secondo” or main course options include Paccatelli pasta with hearty tomato and sausage ragu; Gnocchi Sorrentina with rich tomato sauce and mozzarella; Pollo Saporito — chicken with mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and pine nuts; Salmon Al Cognac with a touch of cream; and Filettino Con Tartufo with white truffle oil. UESTION: We are thinking about selling our home.

How do we start?

ANSWER: Unless you have a sudden job change or family situation that is unexpected, most of us ponder the idea of moving for quite some time. As we get older, we might want to downsize because we don’t need as much space; nor do we want to take care of it. Or young families need more space. Whatever the reason, often it is not a decision that comes without contemplation. So, start working on preparing your house the moment the thought comes to mind.

Worst case, your home will be in great shape if you decide to stay.

The first step is to switch hats from

‘seller’ to ‘buyer’. Look at your home from the viewpoint of a potential buyer. As Realtors, we are often invited into a home to evaluate it, which we really appreciate. We’re an impartial third party who will tell you the straight truth. It can be hard to evaluate your own home.

It’s human nature to get accustomed to certain things – that leaky faucet or paint that is looking tired…furniture that is too big for the space or stuffed closets. Your goal in selling is to present your home as clean, with plenty of storage. If there is “stuff” everywhere, it tells the buyer there isn’t adequate storage or space. Start with closets and cabinets.

1. First, less is more when selling.

You want your home to look spacious and clean so the buyers will mentally be placing their furnishings into the space – not looking at yours.

Especially personal items such as family photos or collections. Pack them up; they’re going with you anyway.

Start thinking ahead as to what is going to move with you, what can be donated, given away or thrown out.

The point is two-fold.

2. Second, evaluate the condition of your home. Is it in good repair?

Make the repairs you’re going to have to for the buyer anyway.

Once your home sells, the first item on the agenda is a home inspection.

A home inspection will reveal every tiny blemish of your home; which is daunting. And by no means will everything on that report require your attention but some will. Everything needs to be working (appliances, lighting, plumbing, electrical) so start right away.

Do yourself a favor - spread the cost of those repairs out over the time you’re contemplating whether or not you’re going to move. Even if you decide to stay put, think how much nicer your space will be!

Start outside – how does your home look from the street? Does the front look nicely landscaped or like a jungle? Do the sprinklers work or are some of the heads broken off? Is the front door in good repair? Is the pool sparkling clean? Once inside the home and you’ve decluttered, would a fresh coat of paint make everything light and bright? Perhaps that bright purple wall would be more appealing if it were neutral to appeal to the masses. Are there scuffs on the walls? You’d be amazed at the num-

ber of Buyers who say they’re not interested because of the paint color.

It’s just paint! There are those DIY (do it yourself) buyers, but the initial impression is what appeals and most want their new home to be move-in ready.

Next, go through every room making certain it is clean, tidy and in good repair. Clear off counter tops everywhere. Do all the doors and windows close and lock? Do the electrical outlets work? Are there leaky faucets or toilets? Is the A/C functional?

Moving or not, evidence of good maintenance (exterior/interior paint), is important to buyers but why not make those repairs anyway – just for you.

Odors are a huge turn-off. Every house has them, but we’re so accustomed to them that we don’t realize it in our own home. Food, pet or tobacco odors can be a challenge. Don’t try to cover odors up with candles or sprays; it’s a dead giveaway that something is being covered up. Pet odors cling to carpet and furniture [beware of litter boxes too]; tobacco is in the fabric, walls, carpet and vents making the difficult to remove. Fortunately, there is a service that specializes in odor removal. Nevertheless, always have your carpet cleaned when you’re selling so it looks fresh and clean.

It’s a good start.

So, moving or not, these are tips that will make every house appealing.

CONSUMER ALERT: CHANGES COMING TO SUNSCREENS

I

t can be challenging-even frustrating-trying to decipher sunscreen labels. That’s why the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing its regulations. To keep up with modern science and ensure safety, quality, and effectiveness, the FDA has proposed updating requirements for more over-the-counter products.

Certain active ingredients that are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) can be marketed without undergoing a new drug application process through the FDA. Currently, only two marketed active ingredients-zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-are considered (GRASE).

Under the proposed regulation, products containing two other active ingredientsPABA and trolamine salicylate-are not considered GRASE for sunscreens and would need FDA approval before they

are marketed. The agency says there is insufficient data on twelve other ingredients and has asked the sunscreen industry to conduct additional testing.

To help consumers identify key information, the FDA wants to see active ingredients listed on the front of packages, bringing sunscreens in line with other over-the-counter drugs regulated by the FDA. A new maximum-labeled SPF value is also proposed. The current cap is SPF 50+ but the agency says new evidence shows additional benefits associated with broad-spectrum SPF 60.

Broad spectrum protects you from both UVA and UVB rays which can lead to premature aging and cause skin cancer.

That’s why the FDA is proposing that all sunscreens with SPF values of 15 and above meet broad-spectrum requirements and, as SPF increases, broadspectrum protection also increases.

Since sunscreens can be applied in a variety of ways, the FDA has different recommendations. For sunscreens that include sprays, oils, lotions, creams, gels, butters, pastes, ointments, and sticks, the agency says they are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE), but more data is needed for sunscreen powders.

Forms that are not considered GRASE include: wipes, towlettes, body washes, and shampoos. To receive GRASE status, they would have to go through the approval process for new drugs.

When it comes to sunscreen-insect repellant combination, the FDA will not label products as GRASE because of incompatibilities between instructions for sunscreen and insect repellant.

Wearing sunscreen should be part of your daily routine. Use a minimum SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection. Apply fifteen minutes before exposure and reapply at least every two hours or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. SNAKE SEASON: SAFETY TIPS FOR LIVING WITH VENOMOUS SNAKES

W

e have officially entered snake season everywhere in the Valley of the Sun, so it’s time to have the annual “snake and reptile reminder.”

This topic is particularly important this year, as we had heavier rains this past winter. This means spring has provided much more cover and food for snakes in the desert, therefore conditions are prime for more snake events (bites!) this year. I know that for most of us, rattlesnake sightings are rare. But there are 13 different species in the Phoenix area and each year over 150 people report being bitten by a rattlesnake.

LEAVE WILD ANIMALS ALONE. The best advice for rattlesnakes?

Avoid them. I was in a CPR class taught by a Rural Metro firefighter a few years back and the snake subject came up. The lead instructor said, “I have worked here for over 12 years,

full time, and I have seen very few rattlesnake bites.” She continued by telling us that every single snake bite that she had seen was, “On a man, on his hand, and he had been drinking.”

Her point was that they were playing with the snake. Don’t be stupid. Leave rattlesnakes and other wildlife alone… even when they are dead.

DEAD SNAKES CAN BITE. Yes, really. You should never handle a venomous reptile, even after it is dead.

Reflex strikes with injected venom can occur for several hours after death, so see my first point and just leave it alone.

WATCH WHERE YOU PUT YOUR HANDS AND FEET. Like all reptiles, rattlesnakes find shelter and warm their bodies by sunning themselves on rocky outcrops or hiding in the dark crevices of rocks, wood piles and deep grass. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid putting your hands and feet in these hidden spaces, always

carry a flashlight, and wear shoes or boots when walking after dark.

STAY ON THE TRAIL. The most likely place to encounter a rattlesnake is in the desert, off the trail, where they are safe to eat, sleep and hunt without any interruptions. A rattlesnake is less likely to stay on a well-travelled hiking trail.

INSTALL OUTDOOR LIGHTING FOR YARDS, PORCHES, AND SIDEWALKS. It’s easier to avoid a snake if your yard is clear and well-lit. If you do see a venomous reptile in your yard, it is probably just passing through.

However, if you are concerned about a dangerous animal in your yard, seek professional assistance in removing it.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BITTEN BY A RATTLESNAKE. Only one percent of people who are bitten by a rattlesnake die, but you must stay calm and seek medical

attention immediately. Follow these guidelines if you are bitten: • Protect yourself and get away from the animal • Check out the animal’s appearance so you can describe it, and take a picture if you can • Stay calm, sit down, try to remain still, and keep the wound beneath your heart • Remove jewelry or clothing from around the wound - you are going to swell a lot • Get to the emergency room immediately for proper medical attention This time of year, snakes are more active in the morning and evening when it is cooler. Unfortunately, this is also when we are most active, so this is the time to stay present and pay attention to your surroundings. Rattlesnakes are a part of living in the Sonoran Desert.

This is their home as much as it is ours, but if you treat them with the respect they deserve and let them have their space, everyone will get along just fine.

Tips to Save for Your Child’s College Tuition After You’ve Gone Through a Divorce

P

arents of college-bound students know that paying for higher education takes planning and saving. For divorced parents, it can be particularly complex. Whether they’re paying for the college bills solo or contributing to the expenses in partnership with their ex-spouse, there are a lot of financial and emotional items to consider. If you fall into this category, here are five tips to help you work toward your college savings goal.

Tip #1: if

conversaTion wiTh your ex-spouse.

If you and your ex-spouse desire to work on funding college for your child together, it may be helpful to have an open and honest conversation to align on a savings strategy. Ask your ex-spouse to pick a time to connect with you on this topic. While it may seem formal, scheduling a conversation will ideally allow both of you to set aside other emotions and get on the same page about funding your child’s college education.

When it’s time to talk, consider bringing in a financial advisor to help facilitate the discussion. A professional can help initiate the difficult topics, offer an informed opinion on how to reach a compromise and provide accountability as you divide and conquer the various expenses (see tip #2). Your divorce settlement may have stipulations or a framework to help guide the conversation.

HELLBOY

A demon-like figure must decide where his loyalties lie: with humanity and his surrogate father, or an ancient sorceress, the Blood Queen, who seeks to bring about the apocalypse.

Something clearly went wrong during development on this film. Hellboy is a movie where no one seemed to be on the same page in production. Tone clash is present everywhere in this movie. Is it a dark, edgy monster film or a Deadpool-like comedy? The editing reeks of post-production issues, with rapid cutting, continuity breaks, and even unnecessary pop music entries straight out of Suicide Squad. The script is one that is exposition over showing, not just in worldbuilding but also in character development. The movie tells us to care about the characters instead of helping us to invest in them by following their journey. The cast does little to help the situation, as David Harbour (Hellboy himself) seems like he’d rather be anywhere else. Some interesting prosthetics and Neil Marshall’s somewhat slick action direction could not save this one.

HIGH LIFE

A group of death row criminals are set on a strange journey to conduct experiments based around a black hole and procreation.

This is a very bleak and brutal film, not in violence but tone and development.

The characters, even the “good” ones like Monte (Robert Pattinson) and Tcherny (Andre Benjamin), have no hope for complete redemption. They can only sit and hope their remaining days are somewhat stable. The dark, pale cinematography is robotic and inhuman, as if we are watching security footage instead of a movie.

The performances are almost all deadpan, which works in the tone of the film, but became a bit tiring after a while. Its showcase of the human condition and how we are doomed to destroy each other will leave you thinking, though maybe not in the best mood.

The misadventures of a stoner poet named Moondog (Matthew McConaughey) on his quest to publish his novel.

Harmony Korine’s film does feel like a story taking place in a “high” world, where nothing is set in reality. Benoit Debie’s cinematography is chaotic and shaky with highly saturated colors, and the characters, even the normal ones, are all insane and rather awful people. Logic and consequences are thrown out the window. I loved every second of it. This is life on the wild side; uncensored and strangely creates a feel-good without completely glorifying the actions of the characters.

Korine’s direction is always changing, and this is some of his best work yet.

ost people in Phoenix venture north of the Valley for a day trip now and then.

We like to visit the mountains, tall pines and cool summers of Flagstaff with trips to the Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim and the small towns and sights to see on the way. But north of Flagstaff and the South Rim lies a vast, sparsely populated wilderness. If you’re looking for adventure on the road less travelled, here are some places you can visit north of I-40 in Arizona.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK – NORTH RIM If you enjoy the majestic beauty of the Grand Canyon, but aren’t crazy about all the tourists, you should check out the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim is about a four-hour drive from the South Rim and sits at over 8000 feet in elevation, which means it is closed during winter months due to harsher winter weather. With gorgeous views and an abundance of wildlife, the North Rim has just one lodge, one campground and accounts for only 10 percent of all Grand Canyon visitors.

VERMILION CLIFFS NATIONAL MONUMENT On the road to the North Rim of the

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier Grand Canyon lies a spectacular vision of towering canyon walls. The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is located on 294,000-acres of the Colorado Plateau, just south of Utah.

This monument includes the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, which is home to Coyote Buttes. You may recognize this international hiking destination, which features rock formations of colorful, swirled crossbedded sandstone – it’s home to the famously photographic “Wave” rock formation. Be sure to plan ahead and prepare for a trip into the wilderness; there is no Visitor Center or lodging, but camping is allowed in designated areas or with a backcountry permit.

GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is located on the Arizona and Utah border, at the center of the Colorado Plateau. This natural wonder encompasses over 1.25 million acres and offers visitors an array of water-based and backcountry recreation. The recreation area also protects scenic, scientific, natural, and cultural resources on Lake Powell, the Colorado River, its tributaries, and surrounding lands. The gateway to Glen Canyon and Lake Powell is the small town of Page, Arizona.

GRAND CANYON – PARASHANT NATIONAL MONUMENT The Grand Canyon National Park is not the only way to see the incredible views the Grand Canyon offers. You can travel west of the North Rim and take a rocky, two-track road in a 4x4 to the edge of the Grand Wash Cliffs, where you will find a stunning, solitary view deep into the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is a dynamic geologic environment with amazing vistas, volcanic flows and mountains on the move. The monument is incredibly remote, so plan ahead and be prepared to leave pavement, cell service, and modern conveniences behind.

NAVAJO NATIONAL MONUMENT Just south of the Utah border and about an hour west of Monument Valley, you will find the Navajo National Monument. Established in 1909 to protect the remains of three large and incredibly well-preserved prehistoric pueblos, Keet Seel, Betatakin, and Inscription House, this monument represents a long cultural history of the Navajo people and their ancestors. Located on the Navajo Nation approximately nine

miles from Highway 160 at the end of AZ Highway 564, the Navajo National Monument is a free park that offers a picnic area and camping facilities.

MONUMENT VALLEY TRIBAL PARK Stunning rock formations and broad vistas welcome you to the Navajo Nation’s Monument Valley Park. The onsite location for many western movies, visitors get to see and experience one of the most majestic and photographed places on earth. Monument Valley is a vast swath of desert just south of the Utah border on the Navajo Nation, displaying graceful sandstone masterpieces that tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet. Highway 163 runs through Monument Valley to Utah, but travelers can stop by the Visitor Center to eat, buy Navajo arts and crafts, and pay to travel through a specially designated area of the park.

The far northern part of Arizona is a vast wilderness that covers hundreds of miles on both paved and unpaved roads. If you crave the solitude of nature and a journey off the beaten path, a trip to this part of Arizona is for you.
