The Future Isn’t Looking Brighter for Fossil Fuel Diehards or Solar Stragglers. Go Solar Today. By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they

need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. The question is whether you’re prepared to thrive in the coming world of economic and geopolitical turbulence. If you’re ready to secure energy independence and security for your family, then contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Say “Hello” To Your New Neighbors—They’re Not All From L.A. By Eric Jay Toll

hen you hear about all these people making Greater Phoenix their new home, do you wonder where they are moving from?

TOP MIGRATION SOURCES FOR GREATER PHOENIX The U.S. Census Bureau recently released data covering five years of migration patterns from its 2020 American Community Survey.

Topping the list for new Phoenicians was the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California metro area. More people moved into Greater Phoenix from L.A. than the entire population of El Mirage. Just about 38,000 Angelinos chose to make Phoenix their new home. The more than 11,600 people moving north from Tucson put that metro second on the list.

the combined total of Central American, Mexican and Canadian immigrants coming to the Valley.

Asian countries were the third largest group, with over 10,500 people moving to Phoenix, almost the same number as

Central America (not including Mexico) ranked fifth, adding nearly 7,000 people to the Greater Phoenix population. Other metropolitan areas rounding out the top ten include Seattle, San Diego and Riverside, California, Flagstaff, and the combined totals from Mexico and Canada (the Census Migration Report does not separate the countries but instead combines them as “Northern America”).

The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes counties in Indiana and Wisconsin, was the fourth largest contributor of new residents, with almost 8,000 people leaving Lake Michigan snow for desert sunshine.

None of these migration patterns comes as a surprise to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a city full of opportunity. People come here to improve their lives,” she 4 • April 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

says. “Large businesses are finding we have well-trained professionals in key industries like biosciences, engineering, and green energy. Small businesses are finding the support and resources they need to grow and thrive. Our new neighbors like the job opportunities, the accessible outdoor life, and the kind of welcoming neighborhoods that make them feel right at home.” ARIZONA CONTINUES FAST POPULATION GROWTH Even though the 2020 Decennial Census numbers have hardly been digested, the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2021 state population estimates on December 21, 2021. The new data suggests that Arizona grew by nearly 100,000 people in 2021 over 2020, making the state the third fastest growing in the nation. Arizona continues to rank fourteenth nationally in population. Over the last three national census counts, seven out of ten new Arizonans moved into Greater Phoenix, a percentage that has increased each decade. myhyperlocalnews.com

SONS OF KEMET, APRIL 15 From the mind of visionary saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings comes Sons of Kemet, an eclectic project combining elements of otherworldly jazz, funk-infused rock, cerebral hip hop, Caribbean folk, and diverse African traditions. The London-based quartet features some of the most progressive 21stcentury talents in British jazz and beyond. Sons of Kemet is born of many vital elements, including a name that nods to ancient Egyptian culture and an unusual instrumentation combining tenor sax, tuba, and a pair of dynamic drummers.

with more than 40 recordings to his credit, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band style, and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. Scofield is joined by a stellar band featuring Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson, among others), Vicente Archer (string bass with Robert Glasper, Louis Hayes, and Scofield Combo 66, etc.), and drummer Josh Dion.

City News Tía Carmen Debuts at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa

Renowned Chef Angelo Sosa to Open Contemporary Southwestern Restaurant JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT & SPA IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEBUT OF TÍA CARMEN, A NEW DINING DESTINATION LED BY RENOWNED CHEF ANGELO SOSA ALONG WITH SEASONED CHEF RESTAURANT ANGELO OPERATOR MARK SOSA STONE SET TO OPEN EARLY THIS MONTH. Tía Carmen, named after Chef Sosa’s aunt, celebrates the local landscape, farmers, and community of the Southwest while reflecting a mix of tradition and modernity with bold, elemental cooking and a diverse beverage program. A protégé of Jean-George Vongerichten, Chef Sosa is known for his work alongside the most pedigreed restaurateurs, including Alain Ducasse, Stephen Starr, and Masaharu Morimoto. He is widely recognized for appearing on several television shows such as Bravo’s “Top Chef” for three seasons and HBO Max’s “Selena + Chef.” As the founding chef and partner in the Michelinrecommended Mexican hotspot, Añejo Restaurant in New York City, Chef Sosa is inspired by his Latin heritage

and the diverse techniques from his mentors throughout his career. “Throughout my life, my Tía Carmen instilled in me a passion and love for cooking, teaching me the impact and the power that food can have when made from a place of pure love,” says Chef Sosa. “The discovery of traveling through the Southwest gave me the opportunity to explore the region through the lens of ranchers, potters, farmers, and artisans. I have always had a deep fascination and appreciation for Southwestern food traditions. It has been an honor and privilege to be able to contribute to this beautiful and rich culinary narrative.” Open for dinner, the menu will feature flavors imbued from a wood-fired grill highlighting the beauty and ingredients of the region. The menu is divided into three sections: light + fresh, maize + harina, and charcoal + wood + fire. Chef Sosa’s signature dishes at Tiá Carmen include Tuna Crudo with chilled corn coconut broth accented with jicama and garnished with dill; Southwestern style tri-tip kebabs garnished with Thai Basil, cilantro, pickles, and serrano chilis; Lamb Ragu with mesquite noodles; and Tía Carmen’s Chicken Guisado, a stew made with succulent pieces of thigh meat and seasoned with a mélange of cumin, annatto, arbol, and oregano. Chef Sosa tapped long-time partner and restaurant operator Stone to help bring his vision for Tía Carmen to life, making this their first restaurant in Arizona.

They are collaborating with a variety of Arizona-based purveyors, including Hypha Foods, the lead producer of foraged mushrooms; Ramona Farms, where he sources the iconic Tepary beans; and Arizona Grass Raised Beef and Top Knot Farms for responsibly raised meats. Additionally, Phoenix-based Blue Door Ceramics designed an exclusive collection of plate ware in collaboration with Chef Sosa to showcase a bold, beautiful Southwestern tablescape. To complement the Tía Carmen menu, Mitchel O. Bushell (formerly of Gwen, Gran Blanco and Accomplice) created a cocktail program focusing on local herbs and spices alongside local producers of small and large batched spirits such as Arizona’s own spirits Whiskey Del Bac and a broad program of artisanal agave spirits. Eduardo Dingler (formerly of Morimoto Restaurant Group) specially curated the wine program, which leans heavily on representation from Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe as well as wines from the West Coast and emerging European producers. Designed in collaboration with Thomas Schoos of Los Angeles-based hospitality design firm Schoos Design, guests can expect an “Earth meets Art” theme when entering Tía Carmen. The 130-seat restaurant represents a clean, warm palette of sophisticated natural simplicity that was developed to harmonize with Chef Sosa’s inspiration—his Tía Carmen. Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Dr. Leland Webb, M.D., but most people know me as Leland.

have the privilege to pay it forward to veterans on the days I work at the VA hospital. MY FAMILY IS… My amazing wife, Sarah, and our two kids: Gabe (12) and Mallory (11). We are a team and love hiking, playing games, pizza movie night, and adventures together.

I’VE LIVED IN THE DESERT RIDGE AREA FOR TWO YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… Arizona is an amazing state. We have the desert, snow, lakes, pine trees, and a little bit of the wild west. Our neighborhoods are great, and the public schools are top notch near our home. We love that we can let our kids ride their bikes to school. It’s also such a great place to access all the Phoenix area with ease. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Getting up around 4:30 a.m. to get a morning workout in before the day starts. I like to put about 25 to 30 miles under me on my bike. Then it’s a quick breakfast with some strong coffee, prayer time with my wife, and off to my practice, Webb Plastic Surgery (webbplasticsurgery.com), to care for patients. I am thankful to have the opportunity to provide plastic surgery services at two locations: in Paradise Valley and Phoenix. I love the chance to help people meet their goals with plastic surgery or help them find restoration in reconstruction and surgical care. I also 16 • April 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… My family. They are my rock, and I am thankful for the moments we have together, the challenges we overcome, the great memories we have created together, and the excitement yet to come. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Goonies.” I love the adventure of these kids and their pursuit to save the day. My sister, myself, and our friends all used to dream about being the Goonies and taking off on some wild escapade together. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… An astronaut, and according to my mom, my kindergarten teacher said that that was a real possibility because “all I did was took up space.” I have always wanted to stand on the moon. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My wife, Sarah. She knows just the words to tell me whether it’s hard to hear or encouraging to keep me going and wake me up. She has always been a blessing on my life.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My kids’ jokes. THE PERFECT DAY… Getting a solid bike ride in to start the day followed by spending time with my wife and kids, whether it is an outdoor activity or chill time together as a family. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Our home church, Christ’s Church of the Valley (CCV). I love the mission of the church to show people love in the Valley. SOME FAVORITE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE… Cycling, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, spending time with my kids, outdoor ventures, overseas and foreign travel, and quiet date nights with my wife.

the peace of nature. However, as I get a little bit older, I realize that my dream vacation is really the dream vacation that my wife and kids always love because I enjoy my time with them so much, so an all-inclusive beach vacation is always a favorite. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... “Do your best and do the right thing.” My parents never demanded perfection out of me, however, they always asked me if I did my best. No one knows the answer to that more than each individual and this has motivated me to continue to strive for my best.

MY LIFE IS… A constellation of epic adventures, efforts, excitement, and opportunities. We have been able to see the world as I served in the Air Force, meet amazing people, open our home, and share our experiences. Authenticity and availability to the people around me is an important capstone of my life. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… My wife’s love. As my college sweetheart, we started our young adult lives together and she has given us the family that we have and the home that is so welcoming every day. This is my most treasured gift. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Some sort of epic adventure like backpacking, canyoneering, and experiencing myhyperlocalnews.com

Real Estate Clean House and Simplify Your Life By Holly Henbest, Realtor

I

n the spirit of spring cleaning, it’s a great time of year for cleaning house and simplifying your life.

Here are some stats gathered by Joshua Becker for “Becoming Minimalist” that confirm the suspicion that Americans simply own a lot of stuff, and that stuff needs to be organized. • The average size of the American home has nearly tripled in size over the past 50 years, according to NPR. • “The New York Times Magazine” cites that one out of every 10 Americans rent off site storage—the fastest growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the past four decades. • Twenty-five percent of people with two-car garages don’t have room to park cars inside them and 32% only have room for one vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. • The United States has upward of 50,000 storage facilities, more than five times the number of Starbucks, according to the Self Storage Association. • Over the course of a lifetime, we will spend a total of 3,680 hours, or 153 days, searching for misplaced items. The research found we lose up to nine items

every day—or 198,743 in a lifetime. Phones, keys, sunglasses, and paperwork top the list, according to “The Daily Mail.” You can see the full list of statistics at becomingminimalist.com/clutter-stats. So, join me this spring as I go through my closets, drawers, and garage and get more organized! My best tips: If you don’t love it, don’t buy it! If you already bought it and don’t love it – get rid of it! Donate whatever you possibly can and get a refreshed feeling when your home is organized and clean. This is also a good time of year to do some annual home maintenance/cleaning tasks: • Replace all smoke detector batteries. • Check your fire extinguisher to ensure that it’s charged. • Check your hot water heater for rust marks or leaks. If there any issues, have it addressed immediately. • Seal any natural stone products in your home. • Wash windows. • Clean carpets. • Steam clean grout.

• Power wash the garage and driveway. • Clean your ducts. • Clean door and window tracks. • Clean your range hood and filter. • Clean your dryer vent. • Check your chimney to ensure that it’s clean of debris. While it takes some work, becoming clean and organized is the best way to enjoy your spring and prepare for summer fun. WYMAN PLUMBING & MECHANICAL

By Michelle Talsma Everson

rowing up, Tamra Wyman worked for her parents’ small business—and she loved it. When she began her first official job outside of her family’s business, it was working at a plumbing supply store. “Little did I know I’d marry a plumber and own a plumbing company,” she says with a laugh. In 2016, she and her husband Doug Wyman opened Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical (WPM) and since then their locally-owned, small family business has continued to grow—providing quality service and plumbing and repair expertise to homes and businesses across North Phoenix, Desert Ridge, and beyond. “I worked for my parents’ online retail business and missed running a business,” Tamra shares. “Then, with Doug being a plumber for over 20 years, we realized that we had the opportunity to start our own business. At Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical, I manage the office and business logistics, and because of his expertise, Doug is the service manager. When we opened our business, we had to think big and give it 100%. We hit the ground running hard and with confidence, because for us, there’s no other way to do it.” YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD PLUMBING AND APPLIANCE REPAIR EXPERTS Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical’s plumbers and appliance repair team proudly serve residential and commercial neighbors across the North Valley and beyond. They are a state-licensed, bonded, and insured plumbing service and appliance repair company. “From our office team to the service technicians, we all live in the same community and have the ambition to serve our fellow neighbors with excellence,” according to WPM. “As a local tight-knit team, our plumbers and appliance repairmen provide honest, reliable services that stand head-and-shoulders above the rest.” Tamra shares that some of the things that sets Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical apart is their high-quality customer service and being able to quote potential customers over the phone. “When we moved here from Colorado, I noticed that many plumbing and appliance repair shops wouldn’t do quotes over the phone and charged customers to come out,” she says. “But for customers’ convenience, we can quote the majority of jobs over the phone.”

She also notes that customer service is a top priority, and she encourages her staff to, “Leave a job site cleaner then they found it.” Tamra and Doug both share that Wyman Plumbing technicians are detailed, courteous and knowledgeable. “We are equipped with all the tools needed to get your task done efficiently, quickly and neatly,” according myhyperlocalnews.com

to WPM. “Our experienced team will show up in service vehicles that are fully equipped with the latest technology in plumbing or appliance repair…We are confident you will not find better qualified, down-toearth plumbers in all of Arizona.”

have appliance installation experts on staff who take these calls. It’s often best to have us do them anyway, because they hook up to your plumbing system, and we have expertise in both appliance repair and plumbing.”

“All of our service technicians wear booties and, of course, clean up after themselves,” Tamra says. “It’s all about leaving local customers with that wow factor.” She adds that the company replies quickly to customers’ needs, including plumbing emergencies.

COMMUNITY MATTERS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING LOCAL In addition to offering quality service at fair prices to their neighbors, Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical is also invested in the community.

Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical’s available services include: the installation and repair of water heaters, water softeners, reverse osmosis, garbage disposals, gas lines, and faucet, toilet, and pressure reducing valves (PRV). Other services include fixing drain issues, drain cleans, toilet problems, water main repairs, broken pipes, septic/sewer lines, leak detection, re-pipes, plumbing camera inspection, rooter services, and more commercial or residential plumbing offerings.

“We very much love giving back to our customers and those who have supported us,” Tamra shares. “Some of our customers’ causes that we have donated to include North Valley Christian Academy, a variety of teams and clubs at Boulder Creek High School, and Youth for Troops. One of our plumbing technicians is very passionate about IMCA Hobby Stock Racing and we recently sponsored his team, Cheetah Racing.”

“We will continue to grow new divisions based on customer demand, like we did with the appliance repair services,” Tamra says. “Now that we repair appliances too in addition to plumbing and mechanical, we are truly your one-stop shop. We’d like to thank the community for their support, and we will continue to grow and give back as we do. There’s nothing more important than supporting our local community and being able to make it a better place.”

Added to running a business together, Doug and Tamra are busy parents with four children, ranging in ages from 19 to 5. Their eldest, Eric, works for the family business as a plumbing technician. As the owner of a local, family-run business, Doug emphasizes that supporting local businesses strengthens the community and economy.

Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical’s office is located at 2103 W. Parkside Lane, Ste. #101, in Phoenix, but the company services clients across the North Valley and beyond. To learn more, visit wyman-services.com or call 623-551-6688.

New to their line-up is their appliance repair services. Tamra explains that offering these services came as a natural extension of their already established plumbing and repair services. “We’d get calls asking us to install washers, dryers, dishwashers, you name it,” she says. “So, knowing there’s the demand, we now

“We urge residents to stay local with the small business owners and the licensed contractors who spent the time acquiring experience and expanding knowledge in their trade,” he says. “The state of Arizona requires licensed contractors to meet experience and examination requirements. Each licensed contractor is also required by the state of Arizona to maintain a bond and insurance coverage to protect homeowners from unnecessary liability.” Looking to the future, Tamra and Doug share that they plan to work hard on continued success and growth.

Leah Knaeble is the Dean of Students for Desert Shadows and Explorer Middle Schools. She is also a member of the PVEA and says the group is trying to fill a void that is needed in the community by re-establishing this successful event. “We are collecting gently used items to give to our students for prom,” she explains. “We always have a great need for men’s items such as suits, shoes, socks, and other formal wear. We are always looking for formal dresses in sizes 14 to 24 but we accept all sizes for dresses, shoes, makeup samples, clutch purses, and more.”

The PVEA will hold three different Prom Boutique events throughout the month of April and all PVSchools high school students are invited to attend. The events are all being held at Sweetwater Community School, located at 4215 E. Andora Drive in Phoenix. Student IDs and face masks are required to attend.

Details for Upcoming CCUSD Student Testing By Cort Monroe, Ed.D., CCUSD Superintendent

A

pril is the time of year where many of our CCUSD students participate in Arizona state testing across all our elementary, middle, and high schools. In all our schools we take great pride in providing individualized instruction for all students so they can perform well. We provide testing accommodations for students who meet Arizona eligibility criteria, and our counselors and teachers work with students who may have high test anxiety so that they can experience success on these testing days. We are looking forward to another successful testing season where we can celebrate how much our students have grown in one year. Below is some information to educate you on changes that have occurred for 2022. Elementary school students formerly took the AzMERIT to assess their proficiency in reading, writing, and math. The state of Arizona has now moved to administering the AASA (Arizona’s Academic Standards Assessment). Third grade students will also take a

new assessment this year—ORF (Oral Reading Fluency), which measures the rate at which they can read an unfamiliar passage. Students will use headphones with a microphone to submit their test online. Fifth grade students will also continue to take AzSCI, a test measuring their proficiency in science, which includes standards covered in grade 3-5. Like elementary students, middle school students formerly took the AzMERIT and will now take the AASA to assess their proficiency in writing, reading, and math. Eighth grade students will continue to take the AzSCI, a test measuring their proficiency in science, which includes standards covered in grade 6-8. Arizona high school students used to take AzMERIT end of course assessments. The state of Arizona has now changed their high school assessment to the ACT exam for all 11th grade students and the ACTAspire exam for all 9th grade students. Eleventh grade students will also take the AzSCI, which measures their proficiency in science and includes standards covered in grades 9-11. Thank you for your support. CCUSD looks forward to this time when our students can truly shine through these examinations.

READY, SET, CAMP! HOW TO SELECT THE BEST SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier

T

he summer months are coming and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy while they’re out of school. One solution is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.

options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for nonprofit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community centers and libraries, and online offerings for lower cost options for summer camp. Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents who need a place for their kids during the summer break, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have planned. Start the Search Now: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child, and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family.

Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money. Be sure that you consider all the expenses involved, including equipment, meals, and extras. There are also a variety of

Here are some tips to help you get started: UNDERSTAND THE ARC OF RETIREMENT SPENDING. Annual expenses generally are highest within the first few years of retirement. This is because retirees are often taking advantage of their newfound leisure time to pursue hobbies, travel, dine out and shop. Spending tends to slow down with advancing age. You may find it reassuring to realize there’s a good chance your lifestyle expenses in retirement could level out or decrease over time. PLAN FOR HEALTHCARE COSTS. Healthcare is consuming an increasing proportion of many retirees’ income. You can start preparing for these expenses today by researching your insurance and savings options and developing a strategy to cover your needs. Your options could include a combination of the following: Medicare, Medigap supplemental insurance, health savings accounts (HSAs), long-term care policies, continuing health insurance through your current or former employer, and other dedicated healthcare savings. Having funds and protection in place can help you feel more prepared to handle a medical emergency or more routine care.

easily accessible investments to provide income in case of a market downturn or an unexcepted financial event in your life. At the same time, it’s important to also have investments that are positioned for growth, or at the minimum, keep up with inflation. Many retirees spend decades in retirement, so plan your investment strategy with longevity in mind. DEVISE A SUSTAINABLE WITHDRAWAL STRATEGY. A well-crafted retirement income plan can help you avoid running out of money and feel more confident about spending your hard-earned assets. Tally up your various sources of retirement income, which may include Social Security, annuities, retirement assets and other investment earnings. Then, decide which assets you will tap into first, and when you will claim Social Security benefits. Remember that at 72 years of age you are required to take required minimum distributions from your traditional IRA and employersponsored retirement plans, so work this income into your plan. CONSIDER THE TAX CONSEQUENCES. Reducing the tax bill on retirement income is a priority for a great number of retirees, yet many feel understanding the tax impacts of drawing down assets is complex. If you share these sentiments, starting the planning process early and seeking guidance from a tax and financial advisor can help you feel more secure in your strategy. – “The Employee Benefit Research Institute’s Spending in Retirement Survey”. By Eric Schwarz, owner of Southwest Jewelry Buyers The decision to sell your gold jewelry is not always a simple one. While you may not wear a lot of your gold rings, bracelets, necklaces, or other pieces, chances are some of them have sentimental value that would make them difficult to part with. Wedding rings, family heirlooms, anniversary gifts—all of these can hold a special place in your heart. Still, it helps to remember that parting with an object doesn’t have to mean parting with its emotional worth, and it may even feel liberating to let go of something you’ve held onto for too long. If you’re feeling hesitant about selling your gold, it may help to go through your jewelry box or your home safe and take stock of the items you have. Separate the gold pieces you feel less attached to and put those aside to sell. It may be that once you’ve sold them and seen how profitable it can be, you’ll be ready to part with the remainder of your unused gold jewelry and other items. CURRENT VALUE OF GOLD IS HIGH Unlike the future of our economy, the demand for gold is certain. The precious metal will always be in high demand, so it will always be valuable. This means your old gold pieces are essentially money in disguise. Due to the high value of gold, it’s not difficult to find a gold buyer in Phoenix. You can also find buyers on the Internet, but we strongly recommend avoiding selling gold online. Not only is it safer to sell gold in person, but it’s also more profitable too. HOW TO SELL YOUR GOLD First, do a little research so you have some idea of what your gold may be worth. Based on the market and the current demand, the value of gold and other precious metals will fluctuate over time, but a quick online search can help you find the most recent spot price for gold. You should also have a basic understanding of the karat structure used to measure gold. Since gold is so soft, it is often mixed with other metals to make it

more durable. However, all gold jewelry must be at least ten karats (10K). This means that by weight, ten of 24 parts must be gold, while the other 14 parts can be different metals. Be sure to separate out your gold jewelry by karat before you take it to a jewelry buyer. If you do decide to sell your gold jewelry, it should be a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Instead of selling your jewelry online, which takes time and may come with added risks, or taking it to a pawn shop, where you likely won’t receive the highest price for your items, it’s best to work with a reputable local dealer that you can meet with in person. For example, at Southwest Jewelry Buyers, our GIA-certified appraisers take the time to meet with you one-on-one and examine your unwanted gold to determine its value. Each appointment is discrete and respectful, and you will never be pressured to sell if you are not ready. Reputable dealers buy all kinds of gold, even your broken or damaged jewelry. What type of gold can you sell? Gold jewelry, broken or damaged jewelry, gold coins, gold medallions, watches, scrap gold, and more are all sellable. In addition to gold, you can also sell your silver, platinum, other precious metals, diamonds, and more. To learn more about selling gold and other precious items, call 480-773-8004 or visit swjbuyers.com. Eric Schwarz is the owner of Southwest Jewelry Buyers. Since their inception in 2000, Southwest Jewelry Buyers has been committed to paying their clients the best prices for their gold, diamond, silver, and platinum jewelry. myhyperlocalnews.com

Using an Estate Planning Attorney is a Good Plan By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks

A

s an estate planning attorney, I often get calls from people who’ve used online trust or will planning software, gone to a cheap trust mill, or had their friend, the former corporate attorney, put their plan together with forms they found in a book. When I’m asked about whether these are good ideas, I like to tell a story about my dear husband. My husband Andy is a great handyman. It’s wonderful that I can ask him to fix things around the house and know he will do it right. Once, he installed a cool new stove top in our home. It was all going smoothly until he put in the new vent hood. I stood across the kitchen watching him, then walked over to the door for a better vantage point as he finished the wiring. Suddenly, the light bulbs in the hood blew out and the fan spun across the room to hit the cabinet – right where I had been standing not 30 seconds before. “Honey,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “Do you think it’s time to call an electrician?” We were lucky. No one got electrocuted due to the error and I didn’t get my head shaved by the fan. But we concluded that there are times when it is best to call in the experts. The same is true when you prepare a will

If you are incapacitated, they may have to go to court and declare you unable to handle your affairs so one of them can be appointed as your guardian and conservator. If you are deceased, your family may have to file a probate to transfer your property to your heirs.

Entertainment

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

IN THEATERS

Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.

the last few days of Yang’s life, finding out more about him, and the family’s reactions. The film touches on the melancholic discovery about who the person you thought you knew really was and the highs and lows of remembering them. It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

ON NETFLIX

all over the movie, killing any form of sincerity or emotional qualities. Several actors in the film are barely used; they are less characters and more objects to advance the story. Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

“Studio 666” The Foo Fighters move into an old mansion to complete their new album, only to discover the remains of its dark past. This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds

NOBODY DOES IT BETTER A local veteran owned business

For those of you who don’t know our story, let us enlighten you

Meet Shawn Ramey, owner and founder of Elite Turf, sister company to American Team LLC. Shawn and his father Brian, both decorated military veterans, founded American Team LLC in 2006 with one goal in mind: customer satisfaction! In their early years, they offered full property renovations, remodeling not only inside the house but a complete landscape design as well. Once Brian passed away, Shawn started to focus more on mastering landscape design. As artificial grass started to become a hot commodity, he quickly realized this is the future for water conservation and maintenancefree landscaping for his customers. Shawn became fully immersed in learning everything he could about the industry. Fast forward to 2021, Shawn is known in Arizona as a leading expert in residential and commercial artificial grass and hardscape design, Shawn has been instrumental in the training and development of many local artificial grass companies and installers. As a fully licensed, bonded and insured contractor, Shawn has installed, directed, overseen or been directly responsible for over 5,000 residential and commercial projects. Some of these projects include fields for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the White Sox, Arizona Sports Complex, and many more. When it comes time to trust a contractor with your business and/or home landscape design, you can trust Elite Turf, a fully licensed, bonded, insured, and veteranowned company! We look forward to your next project! WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT PROJECT!

Las Palomas BEACH & GOLF RESORT

D

uring the hot, dry summer, Arizonans crave sea breezes, cool ocean water, relaxation and activities that will keep the whole family active and entertained. While seaside resorts aren’t part of our desert landscape, Puerto Peñasco (commonly referred to as Rocky Point), is often considered “Arizona’s beach” due to its proximity to our border and its popularity as a vacation destination for desert dwellers. Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, located in the exclusive Sandy Beach area of Rocky Point, features more than 800 contemporary condos perfect for families, friends and couples looking for a beach getaway just hours away from Phoenix.

Luxury condominiums range from one to four bedrooms, each with its own terrace or balcony to take in the breathtaking views and can sleep up to 10 people. Las Palomas was the first resort in Rocky Point to receive a four-diamond rating from AAA. It has also been recognized with a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award for two years in a row, placing it in the top 10 percent of hotels worldwide. It’s located just 10 minutes from Old Port and downtown — where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and shops — and popular Rocky Point watering holes and attractions with live music on the beach. Jacques Cousteau once called Mexico’s Sea of Cortéz “the world’s aquarium.” Set against the sea, and its beautiful beaches, Las Palomas is an ideal locale for exploring or simply taking in the views. Those looking for an active vacation can enjoy Las Palomas as their home base for deep sea fishing, snorkeling, parasailing, or kayaking in the Sea of Cortéz, or hiking or cycling in the surrounding areas. Even if you choose to stay on the secured grounds of the resort, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for every member of the family. 34 • April 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

You can pack light for a road trip to Las Palomas – bathing suits and flip flops are all you need during the day, when you can drift on the property’s lazy river, take a trip down the water slide, or lounge in a gorgeous negative-edge pool, taking in the spectacular views and enjoying a cocktail from one of the swim-up bars. Or stroll over to the full-service spa to indulge in a massage, facial or body treatment. Bring workout wear if you want to participate in activities like Zumba, Aquaerobics, or stretching, or to exercise in the fitness center. If golf is more your speed, Las Palomas is home to The Links, the only true links golf course on Sandy Beach. Open to the public, it is a professional 18-hole, par-72 course that hosts several events throughout the year and attracts world class professional and amateur players, such as the resort’s annual anniversary golf tournament to be held May 13-15. If you’re looking for world-class cuisine, Las Palomas is the home of one of the finest restaurants in Rocky Point, La Maria Bistro & Fine Cuisine, featuring Mexican and world fusion in a beautiful seaside setting. Or enjoy gourmet options from Citron Fine Cuisine, Las Palomas’ French themed full-service restaurant. Both venues feature charming bars that are perfect gathering spots for enjoying fine wine, cervezas, margaritas or sophisticated cocktails. There’s always something happening at Las Palomas, whether a gastronomy class, a beer or wine tasting, or a holiday celebration. You can make a vacation to Rocky Point as adventurous or as laid-back as you want it to be – and even change it up from day to day. Dustless tile removal does not actually mean no dust, rather a lot less dust and still a construction site and will need professional cleaning. $189 per month based on 36-month financing including basic installation and product with 1000sf or less, and room size 12x15. Rooms greater in size or using upgraded flooring will add additional monthly costs. Does not include stairs or rip up. Financing is based on approved credit. $5,500 min purchase for free air duct cleaning. Free home disinfectant service makes no claims to kill COVID-19 or prevent it.
