KITCHEN ON THE STREET

H

unger is a growing crisis for 17 million children in the United States! One in four American children struggling with food insecurity resulting in academic developmental issues that present both immediate and longterm challenges. Children that suffer from food insecurity are more likely to struggle with obesity later in life. Malnourished children often experience limited development such as stunted growth, are underweight and have weakened immune systems. These issues not only affect the child experiencing food insecurity, but the entire community.

Kitchen on the Street (KOS AZ) began serving the community in 2007 when the Scarpinato family learned about the prevalence of food insecurity in local Arizona children. Hearing that thousands of children that received breakfast and lunch at school but were going hungry on weekends compelled Vince, Lisa and Taylor Scarpinato to found Kitchen on the Street as a means of bringing food and hope to children in need. In 2007 Kitchen on the Street was limited to one program to serve the hungry children of Phoenix, a food backpack program providing shelf stable meals and snacks to food insecure children. As a volunteer driven faith based non-profit organization, KOS relies on the community to meet the needs of the hungry and hurting. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, business owners and corporations in providing faithful volunteers and provisional funding, various programs are available throughout Arizona and in 2011 the Bags of Hope program began in San Antonio, Texas.

We invite you to come alongside Kitchen on the Street as we serve the hungry and hurting of the

community. Many hungry kids report feeling “unwanted” and “unloved” as a result of hunger… the act of giving food transcends the physical and reaches into a child’s soul; it has lasting implications on who that child will grow up to be and how they will show love.

The “Kitchen on the Street” Food Truck allows KOS to TRAIN-SUSTAIN-MAINTAIN. TRAIN by using it as a mobile classroom to teach families about food and nutrition at our partner schools and to teach job skills to adults in need.

STANTON: ‘WE HAVE FOREVER CHANGED THE COURSE OF OUR FUTURE FOR THE BETTER’

MAYOR TOUTS STRONG RECORD OF BIPARTISAN ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR PHOENIX MAYOR GREG STANTON SAID THAT PHOENICIANS HAVE “FOREVER CHANGED THE COURSE OF OUR FUTURE FOR THE BETTER” by working to build an innovation and skills-based economy that provides more opportunity for everyone.

In his seventh State of the City address, Stanton focused solely on accomplishments that have been achieved with bipartisan support, comparing Phoenix’s record of getting things done to gridlock that has plagued other governments.

“

Outside organizations have praised Phoenix’s economic progress.

“Phoenix is again solidly on a growth track. Recent expansion in higher education, healthcare and technology reflect a rapidly diversifying economy that should be better positioned to

strategic investments in the biosciences. Over the last six years, Phoenix has invested nearly $30 million in four new university buildings that support biomedical research and innovation. One of the most recent investments is paving the way for the ASU-Mayo Health Solutions Innovation Center on the Arizona Biomedical Corridor.

The city’s contribution leveraged significant investment—more than $500 million—from its university partners to build new centers for higher learning and research.

In addition to growth in exports and innovation, Stanton stressed the city’s public transit system is “one of the most significant boosts we’ve given our economy.” More than $10 billion in capital has been invested along the light rail line since it began operation.

Residents of South Phoenix will soon benefit from a voter-approved expansion that will connect Central and Baseline to downtown. And since Prop. 104 passed, taxpayer dollars are at work, already improving 550 miles of city streets and increasing bus frequency to at least every half hour.

Stanton touted the city’s progress on sustainability. Phoenix was recently one of only 10 cities in the world recognized at the North American Climate Summit for leading the way in sustainability.

Recognizing the challenges and dangers of extreme heat, Stanton announced that Phoenix plans to become the first Heat Ready City in the country and develop a model that will help other cities prepare as well. For that idea, Phoenix was one of 35 cities selected to take on the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge over the next several months.

Phoenix is also taking on challenges such as the opioid epidemic, affordable housing, homelessness, and veteran suicide. On the opioid crisis, Phoenix will be the first city in Arizona to take big pharmaceutical companies to court to recover costs and help those with addiction recover. Since last June, almost 1,000 Arizonans have died an opioidrelated death.

“Every decision, every investment has been made with an eye toward the future,” Stanton said. “Not just creating a strong economy for the present, but building the foundation we want for our children and future generations.”

More evidence of the city’s investment in innovation can be seen in the Warehouse District, where tech-education giant Galvanize—only one-year-old—already houses more than 110 startups. The central city has added more than 24,000 new tech jobs in the last five years. “We’ve turned our city into a destination for startups and entrepreneurs,” Stanton said.

THE BOB & RENEE PARSONS FOUNDATION AWARDS $180,000 IN EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE YOUTH OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

D

uring Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s (BGCS) annual Celebrate Youth at Blue Door Ball gala, Bob and Renee Parsons surprised the audience by awarding educational scholarships to all eight Youth of the Year finalists.

Youth of the Year is a national program run by Boys & Girls Clubs of America that honors leadership, exceptional academic performance and service in the community.

“Education can play a crucial role in changing a life,” said American entrepreneur and philanthropist Bob Parsons. “Renee and I believe that everyone deserves the chance to pursue higher education, and we’re happy to open that door for these outstanding Youth of the Year finalists.”

During the event, Marena Sever from the Thunderbirds Branch was awarded the top honor and named the 2018 BGCS Youth of the Year.

Celebrating her achievement, The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation granted Marena a $40,000 scholarship. All remaining finalists were also awarded $20,000 scholarships from the Parsons Foundation, some of whom were not sure how they would pay for a college education.

“I am overwhelmed and so thankful for this entire experience,” said Sever.

“The generosity of the Parsons will make it possible for me to attend my dream school and study political science.”

Celebrate Youth at Blue Door Ball is the signature fundraiser for the youth development organization, which includes silent and live auctions, paddle raisers and various raffles. Throughout the evening, Youth of the Year finalists from eight of the BGCS branch locations presented their stories of triumph and transformation to the more than 700 in attendance. The 2018 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Youth of the Year will go on to compete at the state level with the potential to move onto regional and national competitions.

“The scholarships are about giving students the opportunity to follow their dreams,” said businesswomen and philanthropist Renee Parsons.

“It was inspiring to watch the presentations from the Youth of the Year finalists, and we wish them luck as they take the next step in their journey to a better future.”

This is the second year in a row that the Parsons have made impromptu scholarship gifts to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s Youth of the Year finalists. In addition to $180,000 in scholarship funds this year, The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation also gave $200,000 through live auction items and other donations.

SONORAN TRAILS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT RECEIVES GRANT

FROM CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION IN SAN DIEGO

L

era Doederlein, an eighth grade student at Sonoran Trails Middle School, has received a $2,000 grant to go toward a new, custom-made hockey sled from Challenged Athletes Foundation in San Diego. This charity provides opportunities and support to people with physical challenges.

In June, Lera had bilateral knee disarticulation surgery to address a congenital condition called arthrogryposis. At the urging of one of her prosthetists, she tried sled hockey for the first time. She fell in love with the game and was borrowing a sled that was too big for her. “I’ve always been into sports and, after the surgery, I thought I would try sled hockey out. It was great,” Lera said. “My Teammates are really encouraging and I love that part of it.”

Lera was adopted from Russia as a baby after she was placed into an orphanage.

She has been able to walk with the aid of braces, but did not believe that would provide her with the level of mobility she craved as she entered her teenage

years. She elected to have the amputation surgery.

Lera wears No. 50 and is a forward on the Phoenix Coyotes Sled Hockey Team. “I like to be out in front,” she said, “I’m a playmaker.” One of her dreams is to play in the Paralympics in the future. ROUTE 66: TRAVELING THE MOTHER ROAD IN ARIZONA

oute 66. The Mother Road. The Great American Highway. No matter what name you give it, U.S. Route 66 is a true part of historic Americana and a great way to see some of the most delightful destinations in the western part of the United States. We are lucky in Arizona to have ready access to some of the best highlights along the historic route. Here are some highlights of the best spots to see here in Arizona along the Mother Road.

The most noted stops on the old Route 66 in Arizona include Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, and Kingman. The National Park Service also provides list of notable and historic sites along the highway, including: • Querino Canyon Bridge, Houck • Painted Desert Inn, Petrified Forest National Park • Wigwam Village Motel #6, Holbrook • La Posada Historic District, Winslow • Walnut Canyon Bridge, Winona • Railroad Addition Historic District and Boundary Increase, Flagstaff • Seligman Historic District, Seligman • Peach Springs Trading Post, Peach Springs • Schoolhouse at Truxton Canyon Trading School, Valentine • Kingman Commercial Historic District, Kingman • Durlin Hotel, Oatman • Old Trails Bridge, Topock However, when we travel with our daughter, we like to venture a bit off the road to see some of the more fantastic sights, national parks, towns and destinations. WALNUT CANYON Just a bit off the road right before you get to Flagstaff is a wonder of nature and history that you simply must see. Walnut Canyon National Monument is a short hike down a steep cliff, allowing visitors to walk through ancient cliff dwellings with stunning views. A relatively quick trip through the dwellings, this is a one of a kind sight. Be sure to bring your walking (or better yet hiking) shoes if you decide to take the trail down.

WILLIAMS, ARIZONA About 20 miles west of Flagstaff is a small town called Williams. Williams is a true Route 66 destination, the Gateway to the Grand Canyon and home of the Grand Canyon Railway. The town is nestled in the trees and mountains of Northern Arizona and is a favorite of Phoenicians and out of state travelers. Be sure to stop for a bite to eat, or stay a while and ride the train to see the Grand Canyon National Park. Don’t forget to check out Bearizona. Another must see destination in Northern Arizona and world class treat for animal and nature lovers!

SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO East of Flagstaff and north of I-40 is another wonder of nature - the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Stop for a look at a very recent volcanic lava flow - a fascinating picture of science in action.

NOTABLE TOWNS ON THE OLD ROUTE 66 HIGHWAY As you head west on I-40, there are many opportunities to take the less traveled Route 66 highway that runs in parallel to it going east and west. A few tiny towns dot the

The trip to Havasu Falls is a destination unto itself, and remember - you must make reservations in advance with the tribe. Don’t try to hike down and camp without calling ahead. The rangers will send you right back up at the end of the day!

about making the purchase. This is an important decision because the risks are directly proportional to the method of purchase. A Certified Used Car from a mainstream dealership is much less risky than a Craigslist offering but also more expensive. A Certified Used Car comes with a warranty while a Craigslist or a car from a neighbor comes with no warranty.

The risk is measured in dollars and you must consider that in your decision and budget. You are not going to find a $3000 car as a Certified Used Car but you can find dozens of them on Craigslist.

Another way to lower your risk is to do a pre-purchase inspection. Most shops will do them for between $75 and $100 depending on how much time they take and how deep into the vehicle the shop goes. Cars are so computerized now that you can’t tell by looking at the engine if it’s a problem waiting to happen or a reliable machine. At the very minimum

you should insist on a full module scan from the shop. That is where a computer is plugged into the cars data port and then proceeds to reach out to all the computers on the car and inquire as to their status, potential problems and ability to do their jobs.

If the report comes back clean, that’s a green flag. If the report shows that the Transmission control module has a problem, that’s a red flag.

If you decide to not have a prepurchase inspection done, at least ask the seller if you can have one done. If they say “no,” run away. If they say “sure,” then at least there not trying to hide something.

WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT GENETIC TESTING CAN HURT THEM

T

his year, over 200,000 Americans will order genetic tests to see if they’re at risk for more than 2,000 hereditary diseases, including cancer.

Patients and their doctors can choose tests from over 500 different laboratories.

Most people don’t think twice about their choice of lab. They figure all labs’ tests are of similar quality. They’re wrong. Many labs are sending patients inaccurate test results. Sometimes, labs notify patients that they have a dangerous genetic mutation when they really don’t. So patients needlessly undergo expensive and invasive surgeries to prevent a disease they’re unlikely to develop.

Other times, labs tell patients that a mutation is harmless — when it’s actually dangerous. So patients don’t take preventative actions and ultimately develop deadly diseases.

It’s time for the FDA to protect patients by regulating these tests, just as the agency regulates prescription drugs.

Genetic tests, formally known as “laboratory developed tests,” detect mutations in people’s DNA. Some mutations are harmless. Others make it extremely likely that a person will develop a certain disease later in life.

Certain mutations in the BRCA gene, for instance, give women an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer.

This foreknowledge can be lifesaving.

Women who learn they’re at heightened risk of breast cancer can undergo frequent screenings. Women who catch early-stage tumors have a 93 percent five-year survival rate, according to the American Cancer Society. When patients don’t catch tumors until the most advanced stage, after the cancer has spread throughout the body, the survival rate plummets to 15 percent.

Many women with BRCA mutations preemptively have their breasts and ovaries removed to prevent tumors from forming. Patients need reliable information before deciding whether to undergo such invasive surgeries. Too often, many labs provide inaccurate genetic test results.

Consider a 48-year-old woman who took a genetic test at a local lab and tested positive for a BRCA mutation.

She decided to have her breasts, uterus, and ovaries removed. After the procedure, her parents also underwent genetic testing. Neither of them tested positive for the gene. Stunned, the woman took another test, which came back negative.

Or take one California-based lab that just admitted its tests failed to detect a mutation linked to colorectal cancer.

Thousands of patients may have received the faulty tests.

Many newer labs don’t have enough experience or samples to find mutations or determine whether a mutation is harmful. Many are so new that they’ve only published a relative handful of peer-reviewed studies and invested just a few million dollars in developing their tests.

The consequences of incorrect diagnoses are severe. Society loses $775,000 for every breast cancer patient who receives a false negative result, according to an

FDA study. More federal oversight could prevent laboratories from delivering inaccurate test results.

The FDA proposed several reforms to govern laboratory developed tests last year. All new and severely modified LDTs, for instance, would have to undergo a rigorous review process.

This process could help identify quality control missteps that could lead to false diagnoses. The FDA would also continually monitor the quality of LDTs to ensure that they deliver accurate results.

Such reforms would protect patients and save lives. But so far, Congress has shown little interest in allowing the FDA to regulate LDTs. Until that changes, thousands of Americans will continue to receive inaccurate and incomplete genetic test results.

ast month we discussed pocket gophers, their habitats, habits and how to get rid of them. This month as the second article in a three-part series, we will be discussing pack rats.

Pack rats are wood rats who earned their name because of their habit of gathering and storing things in their nests. Pack rats are mammals with large ears, large dark eyes and a relatively long tail. They are generally about the size of the common Norway rat (yikes!). The head and body length is about 7 to 8 inches and the tail is 6-1/2 to 7-1/2 long.

They can be distinguished from Norway rats by their hairy rather than scaly tail and their soft, fine fur and large ears. Their bodies are colored cinnamon, brown, gray, yellowish gray or creamy buff; generally, their feet and bellies are generally much lighter in color.

Some items they enjoy collecting include twigs, scraps of garbage, cactus, old toys, and, get ready, dog poop! The most conve-

nient and effective way to reduce a rat population is with rodent bait stations. Since rats are shy and live in fear at the bottom of the food chain, they like to have hiding places while they forage out in the open. The bait stations not only provide such a haven, but are loaded with a bait that supports a rat’s urge to chew- and you’d rather they chew the bait blocks than your car’s wiring harness!

One strategically placed station can lure and eradicate many rats at a time so this serves as a passive means to proactively reduce rat populations.

QUESTION: Is my Realtor allowed to show any listing; or just those listed by their company?

ANSWER: This question comes up quite regularly so hopefully we can clear it up.

A licensed real estate agent who is a member of a local real estate board is authorized to show all properties listed by any agent or brokerage.

So, when you go into an open house, see a sign on a property or find a property online that you’d like to see, always call your Realtor, if you have one, to request a showing of the homes you’d like to see.

If you’re working with a Realtor and you attend an open house, always tell the hosting Realtor that you’re already working with another agent and who they are. If they tell you that you must work only with them, that is not ethical. Most Realtors would never do that. They’re there to answer your questions but it makes it easier on the

host realtor to know if you already have a Realtor. For example, when we have visitors in our open houses, we always ask if they are working with an agent, answer any questions they may have and if they have any interest in the property we’re hosting, we suggest they bring their Realtor back with them. That’s the proper way to do it – and we always appreciate it when visitors are up-front by letting us know they’re already working with the agent, they’re out looking for a home, they’re curious neighbors, or they’re not interested in moving now but were curious about the neighborhood. All are welcome, but it makes it easier on the Realtor to know where the visitor is coming from.

If you don’t have a Realtor and don’t feel quite comfortable with one you’ve met at an open house, ask your friends and family for a referral to someone they know, like and trust.

That’s where most of our business comes from – people who know us.

At the heart of having an investment plan for your future is figuring out exactly what you want to achieve. In determining your investment goals, there are several questions that can help you and your financial advisor develop an appropriate investment plan.

• First, how long can you invest your money?

• Second, how comfortable are you with up and down movements in the value of your investments?

MOVE SAVING UP YOUR PRIORITY LIST Typically when we budget, we budget all of the required obligations that we have — mortgages, car loans, utilities — and then we budget our discretionary spending. And whatever is left over, if anything, is what we save. Reorder your list (and priorities): Pay required household bills and then budget your savings, moving

nonessentials to the bottom of the list.

SMART PLANNING STARTS WITH A SIMPLE PRINCIPLE: PAY YOURSELF FIRST Save systematically to take advantage of the potential for compound growth. As a hypothetical example, Sally, age 23, invests $5,500 a year for 10 years in a Traditional IRA. At age 65, her investment will be worth $363,418, based on a hypothetical, consistent return of 5%. By contrast, David starts funding his Traditional IRA at age 40, putting in a total of $143,000 over 26 years until he’s 65. Using that same assumed return, his investment will be worth $295,180 — about $68,000 less than Sally has in her account even though she invested $88,000 less.

A small amount can be huge here, even if you are saving $10 a week or $50 a month or $200 a month.

Doing so may be more reliable than hoping for an inheritance from your parents, who may incur unexpected medical bills or give their money to someone else.

ANNIHILATION

A biologist enters a mysterious area called “The Shimmer” to discover the reason behind several disappearances.

Annihilation is an experience. Each visual, sound and bit of music immerses you into the world presented, putting you in the shoes of the characters. Writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) gives every moment in the Shimmer both a sense of dread and wonder at the same time, bolstered by the beautiful cinematography from Rob Hardy. The characters are interesting in how they are not completely 100 percent good or bad, each one giving a different performance on how their characters view the strange situations of the story. It drags a bit in the first act, but when Annihilation gets going, it’s fantastic.

THOROUGHBREDS

Two friends create a plan to murder the stepfather of one of them.

Cory Finley’s debut feature is…. something. The tone can be jarring, but it really works in many of the scenes, having some darkly humorous moments. The deadpan acting is rather mixed, with Olivia Cooke’s character working due to the character’s lack of emotion, but Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance feeling odd, given the character is supposed to “feel everything”. The late Anton Yelchin gives the best performance as the creepy Tim, however, playing a hateable but weirdly funny character. Finley’s camerawork and editing also adds on to the uncomfortable feeling, with several long takes featured in the film. It’s probably not a film for everyone, but anyone into strange films with insane protagonists will probably like this.

Watching Red Sparrow, I thought director Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games sequels) was the wrong choice for this film, as his style doesn’t fit with the dark tones of the film. The leads, Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton, also seem bored throughout the film, very rarely feeling like they’re invested in the intensity of certain scenes. It’s another example for me where the supporting cast is much better, with this film mainly coming from Matthias Schoenaerts and Jeremy Irons.

I also have to give the film credit for not holding back on a lot of the graphic material seen in the film. It’s rare to see a really hard R rating in mid-budget film from big studios nowadays, but I’m glad Fox is still keeping them alive, even if they’re not always the best.

A young girl, her brother and friend travel through the universe to find her father, with an evil force taking the shape of darkness in their way.

Ava DuVernay’s (Selma) new film is one that is full of clichés and dialogue/moments you’ve seen plenty of times before.

But the film has a surprising amount of scientific terms and talk in the screenplay when compared to usual kids film like it, which makes me appreciate its ambitions more. The lead, Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is likable, and I did believe her struggle from the disappearance of her father. Surprisingly, the best performances were from minor roles from the characters played by Michael Pena and Zach Galifianakis, both having very strange and intriguing characters that take over the scenes they are in.

It must also be noted that the film’s visual style is diverse, with a new type of landscape in nearly every scene.
