Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power

L

eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies.

Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics.

It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large.

The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution.

Arizonans can certainly relate.

Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021.

“Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.”

The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain.

Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off.

Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for

Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources.

Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. Another way to fight back is by getting engaged in the fight to expand federal support for clean power, starting with participation in events like the SEIA virtual rally. Our government could do a lot to counteract these headwinds, but until the political climate changes, any national effort to stop the Earth’s climate from changing is merely hypothetical.

Senator Luján said he believes there is a path forward for federal legislation and that it runs through state-level action. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan.

Super Bowl LVII Host Committee Launches Countdown to 2023 Game in the Valley

IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018.

Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show.

It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.”

The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only

starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude.

and had an economic impact in excess of $700 million.

It’s an event that could greatly benefit the state’s economy. Gov. Doug Ducey offered a positive outlook not just on the prospect of hosting another successful Super Bowl, but on the state’s financial health as a whole.

While the macroeconomic boom grabs headlines, the benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is felt at even the smallest levels of local economies. The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events.

“Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona.

This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.”

Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars.

The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The 2015 game brought in 120,000 visitors

“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”

“The Business Connect program supports minority-owned businesses, womenowned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.”

The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape.

Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls.

With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft.

“When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.”

It takes a village to host a Super Bowl, and if the track record of this committee is any indication of what’s to come, Super Bowl LVII will be a well-oiled machine.

The reception will include a charity auction, raffle prizes, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The golf tournament takes

“The funds raised from these events will help cover expenses associated with a child’s cancer diagnosis, provide K9 therapy and counseling, birthday gifts, art classes, and overall emotional and financial support to Arizona families,” says Funari. “Support from our local community is an integral part of Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children and allows us to offer our programs free of charge to hundreds of Arizona families yearly.”

Arizona Rodeo Debuts New Specialty License Plate

New Plate Honors the State’s Rodeo History, Just in Time for the Scottsdale Rodeo

By Doug Pacey, ADOT Communications DAVE ALFORD HAS BEEN AROUND THE RODEO NEARLY HIS ENTIRE LIFE. Now 68-years-old, Alford, the general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale, was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Rodeo specialty license plate.

“From fans to contestants, there are many people that will

get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause,” he says. “And rodeo people haul a lot of things. I’ve already heard from people who say they’re going to put the rodeo plate on their trailers.”

The Arizona Rodeo specialty plate just debuted and costs $25 upon initial application and $17 from each plate goes to promote, educate, and preserve the history of rodeo in Arizona. And there’s a lot of rodeo history in Arizona. Alford points out that the two oldest rodeos in the world – Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo – are in Arizona, and rodeos in Scottsdale, Tucson and Yuma have occurred for nearly a combined 250 years.

“There’s a lot of history of rodeo in Arizona and we wanted to put it on a license plate and share it,” he says.

Celebrate Local History at Cave Creek Museum CAVE CREEK MUSEUM’S MISSION IS TO PRESERVE THE ARTIFACTS OF THE PRE-HISTORY, HISTORY, CULTURE AND LEGACY OF THE CAVE CREEK MINING DISTRICT AND THE CAVE CREEK/CAREFREE FOOTHILLS AREA THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND INTERPRETIVE EXHIBITS. KIWANIS DAYS: ACTING 101 The Cave Creek Museum will offer visitors the opportunity to focus on important acting tools and exercises that strengthen confidence on stage and in social experiences. The event takes place on Saturday, March 13, from 2-4 p.m. during Kiwanis Family Days. The event is free thanks to the support of Kiwanis Club of Carefree.

The session will be led by Eric-Lee Olsen, who graduated from the LACC Theatre Academy in 2011 before briefly attending The Second City in Chicago. Since 2014, Olsen has been in more than 200 productions spanning from Murder and a Meal Dinner Theatre to film and television.

Student must be 10 years or older and the event is limited to 25 students.

MINERS’ DINNER ON MARCH 22 The Miners’ Dinner takes place on March 22 from 4:30-8 p.m. and is a major fundraiser for the museum. Along with dinner catered by Phoenix Palate, the museum will have a silent auction and raffles. Guests can win a chance to ride in a hot air balloon with Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Co. The new mine shaft is a replica of a typical hard rock Arizona gold mine. To enhance the experience, lights flash and the earth shakes to replicate sequential dynamite explosions. Visitors will learn how the introduction of dynamite and compressed air rock drills increased a mine’s output, but also made it far more dangerous for Arizona miners at the time.

The Arizona Gold Mining Experience features the mine, a tram, a crusher and the 10-stamp mill as part of a 90-minute fascinating demonstration. The Arizona Gold Mining Experience runs the second Saturday of every month through May from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

City of Phoenix Seeking to Hire Hundreds of Lifeguards A Certification Course is Required to Apply WANT TO WORK A GREAT SUMMER JOB AND MEET AWESOME, DEDICATED PEOPLE WHILE MAKING MONEY? The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking to hire hundreds of lifeguards ahead of the 2022 pool season. Currently, Phoenix needs to hire more than 400 lifeguards to safely open the city’s 29 public pools for this summer.

“If we cannot hire the number of lifeguards we need, we cannot open all 29 pools and that means less people will have access to a pool where they can cool off and less children will learn to swim,” says Phoenix Aquatics Director Becky Hulett. “Being a lifeguard is the best summer job. You’re taught valuable life skills and meet friends that will last a lifetime.”

rest of my day can include a morning TV live shot at Butterfly Wonderland, a magazine photo shoot at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, or a video shoot with penguins at OdySea Aquarium for a social media post. Sometimes I am writing press releases or collaborating with social media influencers and other times I am touring Hollywood producers through the complex for a possible new movie.

Recently, I worked on a story with “ABC World News Tonight” and the next day I did a story with “People” magazine. Every day is different and that is exactly how I like it.

MY FAMILY IS… My wonderful husband, John, our outgoing 10-year-old son Jett, and our crazy rescue dog, Juno. John and Jett are often “extras” in my live shots or photo shoots at Arizona Boardwalk. They are great sports!

I’VE LIVED IN THE DESERT RIDGE AREA FOR THREE YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… It just feels like home. We love how easily you can eat, shop, and play in Desert Ridge plus its proximity to so much in Scottsdale and Phoenix is amazing. We especially love Desert Trails Elementary School where our son Jett is in fourth grade.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Facebook and Instagram. Could I live without them? Sure. But we moved across the country to Arizona only knowing two people here, so being able to connect with friends and family from all over is priceless in my book.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Like George Bailey, it moves me to think about the decisions I make, the places I go, and people I come across in my life’s path.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A sportscaster. An internship in the Press & Publicity Department of Walt Disney World changed my focus

to public relations, but I did work in TV news and sports for a short stint.

Is New Construction The Solution?

ith so much talk about our supply and demand imbalance, a lot of people are left wondering if new construction will solve the problem. In the short term, unfortunately there is not enough new construction in process to make a significant impact to our supply.

To help you stay informed, here are some key facts to be aware of regarding new construction.

• Nationwide, the data shows that about 50% of new construction is for single family homes. The rest is for multifamily housing – apartments, condos, and townhomes.

• There were more homes under construction in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 than there were in 2021 and today.

• New construction has been building at under average quantities for 12 years. So, we have 12 years to catch up on.

• Nationwide, 2021 saw 1,337,800 completed homes of all types. This is below the long-term average, which is 1,396,000.

• In the U.S., 2021 saw 966,900 completed single-family homes. This is below the long-term average, which is 1,002,100.

• In the West region of the country, 2021 saw 319,500 completed homes of all types. This is below the longterm average, which is 341,100.

• Single family home new construction in Maricopa County has declined over the last 12 months and new permit counts are in a downward trend.

Another impact to new construction has been a labor and supply challenge because of the pandemic. Construction supplies went up in price and suppliers experienced shutdowns and difficulty producing and delivering products in a timely manner. We’ve all heard stories about people waiting months for appliances and flooring—and that’s just

a slice of the delays. We’ve also encountered pandemicrelated labor challenges.

For those expecting that 2022 would start off with a bit of a post-holiday lull, the robust buyer demand resulted in continued competition for homes. We had a further reduction in inventory and saw a spike in sales prices.

PVSCHOOLS CELEBRATES NINE NATIONAL BOARD-CERTIFIED TEACHERS Did you know that National Board Certification is the highest certificate an educator can achieve? It’s true! PVSchools is proud to say that five of their teachers have just reached this distinction, and another four teachers have renewed their credentials. They are now among an elite group of educators who have earned this prestigious honor.

Since the NBCT credentials need to be renewed every few years, PVSchools had several teachers complete the National Board’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process. The educators who have completed the process are Rachel Cohen, Larkspur Elementary School; Heather Fleming, Quail Run Elementary School; Teresa Smith, Pinnacle High School; and LeAnna Wolkis Goldstein, Fireside Elementary School.

PVSCHOOLS WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER Recently, Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson appointed Michael Laney to the PVSchools Governing Board. Laney will serve on the Governing Board for the remainder of 2022. His appointment fills a vacancy that occurred after the resignation of a Governing Board member. An involved local community member, Laney co-owns an online retail business and was a top sales agent at GoDaddy for several years. He and his wife have four children, two of them have graduated from PVSchools, and two that are still attending schools in the district. He shares that he joined the board as a way to give back to his local public schools.

he Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) and its schools are supported by many wonderful and giving parent and community member organizations. This is a true hallmark of our wonderful district and these groups truly represent the “One Team” spirit in striving for student success. The Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation (CCUEF) is no exception.

The biggest fundraiser of the year is coming up soon for the Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation –Rock the District. Rock the District is an amazing concert put on by extremely talented students. Due to the pandemic the past two years, CCUEF has had to cancel Rock the District.

This year the event will be held at Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek (6895 E. Cave Creek Road) on Saturday, April 2 from 6-10 p.m.

CCUEF was founded in 2009 to support our CCUSD classrooms, students, and teachers. Every year CCUEF opens an application that allows CCUSD teachers to apply for grants based on four pillars: Technology, International Learning, Music and the Arts, and Health and Wellness. Over the years, CCUEF has granted over $225,000 to our schools and just this year they were able to grant $25,000 to teachers across all our schools in CCUSD.

The goal of the foundation is to be able to grant more money every year to CCUSD teachers for student learning with a goal to be able to start setting up scholarships for our graduating senior students as well.

There are several ways to get involved with CCUEF: • Attend their fun events.

• Volunteer (there are plenty of opportunities for both adults and students).

• Sponsor an event (they have many levels of sponsorship events such as Rock the District).

• Donate an auction item for fundraiser events like Rock the District.

Built for Fun in North Phoenix The New Bricks & Minifigs Welcomes Local LEGO Fans

L

EGO is a family affair for the Blaz family. Longtime fans of the construction toys, Allen and Kat Blaz decided to turn their family’s LEGO hobby into a North Phoenix business, Bricks & Minifigs.

They were initially introduced to the franchise while visiting Kat’s brother in Albuquerque. “He took us to a Bricks & Minifigs for the first time and we thought it was a really cool concept,” she says. “At the time, we never thought we’d own one.”

Founded in 2009, Bricks & Minifigs is a buy, sell, trade model exclusively devoted to all things LEGO, including bulk bricks and other accessories. The minifigs in the name refers to the collectible, poseable mini-figure characters that come in sets or as individual pieces.

When they returned home to Arizona, Allen found out there was a Bricks & Minifigs in Avondale. He’d regularly make the long drive out to the store with their kids, Alec and Evie, to scope out the offerings.

“Out of the blue, Allen came to me last February and broached the idea of opening up a North Phoenix Bricks & Minifigs.” says Kat. “I’ve always liked the idea of owning a business. As a horse trainer previously, being my own boss and working for everything I make appeals to me. So I said, ‘Let’s do it.”

As a mom, Kat also saw the potential of opening up a kid-friendly store in a community she adores. “North Phoenix is really growing. There aren’t a lot of kid-type stores around here, yet there are a ton of families living here,” she says.

Another thing she liked about the idea: the LEGO industry is thriving, despite the pandemic. “LEGO became something more important for families to do together and to get kids off their iPads. I also like that it’s been a toy that’s been around for decades and has really stood the test of time.”

Allen, in business intelligence for Zelle, the peer-to-peer payment app, had been doing research on the concept for months prior to speaking with Kat. As soon as she gave the okay, he secured financing to get the ball rolling.

Bringing the store to fruition proved more of a challenge.

The original plan was to open the store in August of last year, but between the city being short staffed, the cost of the build doubling in three months, and supply chain issues, the project was delayed. The extra time gave the couple time to thoughtfully plan out the store as well as build up their inventory.

“The biggest thing with Bricks & Minifigs is that it’s your one-stop shop for everything LEGO. There are no other stores around where you can find LEGO new in a box, you can find used sets, you can find minifigs by themselves, or you can buy pieces from our bulk

area if you have a set and you’re missing a few pieces to complete it. We also have an area where you can build your own minifigs, which is really popular,” she says. “We also buy and trade your old LEGO. If you have an old set that you want to get rid of, bring in the set, and we’ll give you cash or trade-in value so that you can walk out with a new-to-you set.”

What’s truly unique about each Bricks & Minifigs store is the variety between locations. “All the used sets are what we’ve gotten from our community, so each store has different cool show pieces. We call them relics,” says Kat. The North Phoenix store’s relic is a custom Iron Man Hall of Armor, which has every single Iron Man marked minifig. Its value is close to $3,000.

While that seems like a hefty price tag for a kid’s toy, Allen points out that LEGO isn’t just for youth. “There are popular groups called AFOL (Adult Fans of Lego) and LUG (Lego User Groups) that have tremendous followings. There’s even a show called ‘LEGO Masters,’ where LEGO enthusiasts of all ages participate in a series of competitions that begin with a single LEGO brick and concludes with inspiring, complex construction.

On Sundays, when normally closed, the store can be reserved for birthdays or private events. Eventually the store will also offer camps. The pair also plan on working with schools to support S. T. E. A. M. initiatives and LEGO clubs where children can use LEGO to continue learning and bolstering creativity. They’re also looking forward to working with nonprofits that have the same community values the couple holds dear.

“This is not only for the love of LEGO, but also about becoming pillars in our community,” says Kat. “We love this area, and we want to give back. It’s not just about opening a store and making money. For us, it’s about being an integral part of the community.”

TAKE THE TRIP FAMILY TRAVEL HACKS JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING BREAK

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee.

Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road.

USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide.

The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring.

GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied

ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free.

CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. For example, the first hour we listen to different genres of music, then they watch a DVD, the next hour is quiet time, coloring time, etc. I also love conversation starter cards for families. Check out Table Topics; they give families ideas/topics to discuss.

DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past.

PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love

writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills.

BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle.

I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids.

GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips.

REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free.

OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but

I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!).

PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on.

It’s important to instill in your kids a love for travel, exploration, and adventure— memories over monetary for the win.

ccording to a recent survey, 45% of Americans have a side hustle in addition to their full-time job. In Maricopa County the formation of businesses rose from 4.7% to 31.9% between 2019-2020. Whether out of necessity or passion, these side jobs will have important tax consequences come April 15.

“Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.”

“Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic 28 • March 2022 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.

“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”

has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.

A full half of the film is spent before the murder happens, which can make or break the film for some, but I believe it utilizes it well to establish our characters and make you suspicious of them. The lovely views of the Nile contrast the dark atmosphere well too. It takes a second to get going, but Kenneth Branagh’s second Poirot mystery is an improvement.
