IT SEEMS EVERY TIME I HEAD OVER TO HIGH STREET, SOMETHING NEW IS A BREW! No pun intended, but thanks to the recent opening of Rick Bronson’s The Stir Coffee Shop, there is now an official coffee house… and Hula’s Modern Tiki brings a bit of aloha spirit to the area. But there’s more… In fact, The Stir Coffee Shop has a hidden portion —Gin & Reel Speakeasy — located at the back of the old school style coffee house so it’s perfect for daytime java, and nighttime gin… Whether craving a cuppa Joe, an inspired nosh, an over-the-top ice cream delight, a creative cocktail or a vintage nightcap, one can have it all here. With this latest concept, Owner/ Proprietor Rick Bronson, who also owns Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy on High Street has created an establishment that can instantaneously spark sensations of joy, comfort and nostalgia in every customer from the moment they walk through the door. With its own hidden entrance, the intimate Gin & Reel speakeasy located at the back of The Stir takes guests back in time with an unparalleled Old Hollywood vibe including vintage projectors and old school images of red carpet affairs adding to the ambiance, throwback black-and-white films on rotation, and perhaps even a cocktail waitress dressed impeccably representative of the times. Yogi’s Grill is also set to open its doors on High Street, taking over the space formerly occupied by Firehouse Subs. This quick-casual concept brings healthy and casual Japanese dining to our ‘hood. With a variety of bowls that are customizable with various proteins and add-ons, along with stir-fry, udon noodles, tempura and a full sushi menu, diners have a variety to choose from on any given day. While details are still largely under wraps, The Nemesis Club is set to bring escape-room style entertainment to High Street, hopefully by this summer. Owner Dustin Smith says The Nemesis Club will offer three immersive game experiences. After some interactive adventure, guests can go next door to the Soda Jerk Co. Milkshake Bar, an old-fashioned style soda fountain also owned by Smith, to slurp down a craft soda, float, or decadent milkshake. Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar is now filling up 17,000 square feet of High Street with a little taste of Rocky Point right here in Phoenix – occupying the space formerly taken by High & Rye. With a full bar featuring more than 150 whiskeys and even a wide selection of sake, Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar has a complete menu of not only Mexican food but Italian food and a sushi menu too — all scratch made. CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES ON CITY NORTH AT DESERT RIDGE THINGS ARE TAKING SHAPE ON CITY NORTH AT DESERT RIDGE AFTER NEW OWNERSHIP TOOK OVER LAST YEAR. Last summer, Crown Realty & Development announced construction activity to begin on the almost 100-acre lot. Construction is set to add two million square feet of office space and other mixed uses as well as 2,200 multifamily units to this prime northeast Phoenix location. The property that surrounds High Street’s retail, office and residential community near the Loop 101 and 56th Street is currently in its first phase and is set to include a number of restaurants including one from high-profile restaurateur and now hotelier Sam Fox, Blanco Tacos & Tequila, and a dual-branded hotel by real estate developer Brian Frakes. As part of the deal, CEO of Crown Realty & Development Robert Flaxman, the master developer of City North and thousands of acres in north Phoenix, says the company plans to sell eight acres to Frakes’ company, Common Bond Development Group. That parcel is near 56th Street and a new street that will be called City North Boulevard. While still in the early planning stages, Frakes says his company is scheduled to develop 22,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and will also develop a dual-branded hotel with a total of 240 rooms. The new Blanco Tacos & Tequila will be a departure from the brand’s other locations. Fox Restaurant Concepts latest Blanco will be a large-format restaurant totaling 10,000 square feet. Common Bond also wants to identify two additional high-quality restaurant and retail concepts to add to the development. In a recent interview Frakes, who is also assisting Fox develop the boutique hotel in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, says the hotel will be branded but did not reveal under northtatumtimes.com
what flags it will operate under. Construction on Common Bond’s retail and restaurant project is set to begin at the end of 2020 and be finished by the fall of 2021, with the completion of the hotel currently slated for spring of 2022. Calling the development a “city within a city,” Frakes says that there will be so much going on in the area and that they are “part of a greater sum.” Longtime successful restaurateur Sam Fox added hotelier to his resume last year with not only the announcement of his sale of Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC) to the Cheesecake Factory Inc. for close to $310 million (with FRC continuing to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary and Fox maintaining leadership of the company) but also news of his plans to build his first boutique hotel at the very prime location of 44th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix. This is also not the first time Franks and Fox are teaming up for a development project — the two have collaborated on The Yard in Tempe, Gilbert and Tucson. NORTH VALLEY TO GET NEW HOSPITAL IN CAVE CREEK ABRAZO CAVE CREEK HOSPITAL SET TO START CONSTRUCTION ABRAZO HEALTH RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT IS SET TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION A NEW SMALL-SCALE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IN CAVE CREEK NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF CAREFREE HIGHWAY AND CAVE CREEK ROAD. Expected to open in 2021, Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital is a new type of neighborhood hospital, sometimes referred to as a “microhospital,” designed with an emphasis on quality medical care, convenience, efficiency and short ER wait times. Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital will focus on emergency and surgical services, with eight rooms for patients needing overnight care. The single-story, approximately 35,000 sq. ft. facility at the southwest corner of Carefree Highway and 53nd Street will include a 13-bed emergency department, an operating room and eight inpatient rooms, along with additional services. Abrazo Health currently operates six Valley hospitals including the acclaimed Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital. The Cave Creek hospital will be Abrazo’s third neighborhood hospital. Abrazo Mesa Hospital opened in October 2019 and Abrazo Surprise Hospital is expected to open later this year. Each is closely in-
tegrated with Abrazo’s larger sister hospitals, medical group and community physicians.
“We all prefer to receive care closer to home, and this type of hospital meets a need for access to medical care beyond what’s available at an urgent care or freestanding emergency center. The hospital will offer a 24/7 ER and have the ability to perform surgical procedures, with around-the-clock general surgery, hospitalist and emergency physician coverage,” said hospital CEO Ed Staren. “Our goal is to provide multiple points of access for those who choose Abrazo for their care. Emergency care and operations like appendectomies and gall bladder procedures, for example, can be performed in the neighborhood hospital setting,” said Staren. Patients with abdominal pain, sprains and broken bones, minor trauma, lacerations, dehydration, pneumonia and flu are typical of injuries and illnesses expected to be treated in the Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital emergency department. “We’re anxious to begin providing care for our
neighbors and friends in the Cave Creek area,” he said. “Providing quality medical care and excellent patient satisfaction are among our top priorities, and we want our ER waiting times to be among the shortest they can possibly be.” When completed, the hospital is expected to create approximately 50 jobs. General contractor for the hospital is Adolfson & Peterson Construction; the facility was designed by E4H Architects.

Counting everyone in your household in the 2020 Census is your opportunity to help your community receive funding for public programs and services. Every decade since 1790, the United States has counted its population. The U.S. Census Bureau uses that data to allocate $675 billion in federal funds
to support programs in education, healthcare, transportation, parks and recreation services, and other important local resources.
In Arizona, census data helps with the distribution of federal funding across 55 programs, including the National Lunch Program, federal student loan programs, and many other programs that enhance quality of life. For each person counted, the state receives $2,959 in federal funding totaling more than $20 billion per year, which goes toward vital services including schools, emergency services, and hospitals. There will be three secure and confidential ways to respond to the census. Each household will receive a code in the mail in March, directing the head of the household to complete the questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail. Each method takes under 10 minutes to complete and is completely safe and secure.

The Census questionnaire asks you to share demographic information, but your answers are strictly kept private and anonymous, even to other government agencies. Title 13 of the U.S. Code prohibits the Census Bureau from releasing any identifiable information about you or anyone else in your household. This law extends to protect your information from being shared with any person, organization, court, business or government agency, including law enforcement. Anyone employed by the Census Bureau is sworn under oath to protect any identifiable information. Violating this law is a federal crime which could result in a $250,000 fine and/or up-to five years in jail. These strict penalties are put in place to ensure that census data is only used to generate the statistics that guide the distribution of federal funding and allocation of congressional representation.

One scam that targets companies and continues to be reported is the W-2 scam, which is when a phishing email is sent to someone in a company’s human resources or payroll office that appears to be from an executive of that business and asks for payroll information containing confidential information, be emailed immediately. The Arizona Department of Revenue advises staff to never respond to the email, and instead, connect with the person whose name is on the email by phone or in person to confirm its authenticity. ADOR recommends companies establish specific internal policies to address these requests and take steps to protect employee information. APPROVE 229 VOTING LOCATIONS TO REDUCE WAIT TIMES AND IMPROVE THE VOTER EXPERIENCE, THE MARICOPA COUNTY ELECTIONS DEPARTMENT IS MORE THAN TRIPLING THE NUMBER OF VOTING LOCATIONS FOR THE MARCH 17, 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE ELECTION.
On Election Day, voters will have 229 voting locations, including 40 locations that will serve as vote anywhere locations. The Elections Department reviewed historic turnout models, mapped voting patterns and worked with community partners to increase polling locations from 60 in 2016 to 229 this election. In addition to increased polling locations, under the new joint management structure with the Board of Supervisor and Recorder Adrian Fontes, the Elections Department has purchased
new tabulation equipment, nearly doubled the amount of full-time staff and invested in the voter education campaign BeBallotReady.vote.
The Presidential Preference Election is the voter’s chance to select their party’s nominee for President of the United States. Unlike Arizona’s traditional primaries, the Presidential Preference Election is not an open primary. Only the Democratic Party has chosen to participate in the election on March 17, 2020. The Potential Tax Benefits of Company Stock in Your 401(k) Plan
I
f you own a 401(k) that includes stock from your company, chances are you’ll someday need to decide what to do with it. This decision often comes into play for people who are retiring or otherwise leaving their employer. Whatever the case may be for you, it’s important to understand your options when determining whether and how to move company stock out of your 401(k). It’s also worth exploring whether an easily overlooked provision in the U.S. tax code could help you manage your tax bill when the time comes.
What you need to know about IRA rollovers
Many people who leave their employer choose to roll over their entire 401(k) plan account – including all of their company stock – into an IRA. If this transaction is completed in a proper manner, it can be done so with no immediate tax ramifications. However, it’s important to understand that any future withdrawals from the rollover IRA will be taxed at ordinary income tax rates, which can range from 10 percent to 37 percent. And, those who take a taxable distribution prior to age 59-1/2 may face an additional penalty of 10 percent – something that should be taken into serious consideration prior to making such a move.
Capitalizing on net unrealized appreciation rules
401(k) holdings and take it out as an in-kind distribution. You will owe tax on the cost basis of the stock at your ordinary income tax rate. However, the appreciated value of the stock (the NUA) will remain untaxed until you liquidate shares of the stock. Dividends will be taxable on an ongoing basis, but possibly at a more favorable “qualified dividends” rate. In certain circumstances, taking a lumpsum distribution of employer stock and invoking NUA provisions could result in a long-term tax-savings. Importantly, it’s best to wait until you reach age 59-1/2. Completing this transaction prior to that age may incur a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty.
Check your 401(k)
Take a closer look at the assets held in any of your 401(k) plans with both current and past employers. If company stock is included, you may want to consider which strategy – a rollover of the full amount or a lump-sum distribution of employer stock utilizing NUA – is more effective for you. Check with your plan administrator to find out more about the details of the stock position you own. he Baehr Challenge for Parkinson’s Research will host the 11th Annual Baehr Challenge Obstacle Course on Saturday, March 28, 2020, from 9 AM to Noon, at Aviano Community Park just west of Desert Ridge Marketplace. The Baehr Challenge event is a staggered-start obstacle course designed for all fitness levels and all ages including individuals, families and people with Parkinson’s disease. Participants scale a wall, maneuver an inflatable, crawl under and through obstacles with family and friends in a morning of fun you will never forget! Proceeds from the event benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation and its fitness affiliate, Team Fox, to fund scientific research for better treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Brian Baehr was diagnosed with early
onset Parkinson’s disease in 2007. As you may know, there is no known cure for Parkinson’s at this time. However, research continues to support fitness as one of the best methods of treatment for Parkinson’s patients. Brian’s son, Matt, studied kinesiology and business at Arizona State University and started Spartan Boot Camps while a student to help local residents across the valley get in shape and improve their diets. Father and son stand together to raise awareness and make a difference for people with Parkinson’s and their families. The Baehr Challenge, LTD is an Arizona 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that creates awareness regarding fitness as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease while funding scientific research for improved treatments and a cure. Since its inception in 2010, Baehr Challenge, LTD has raised more than $200,000 with a portion distributed to the Mi-
chael J. GIVING HOPE: CHILDREN’S CANCER NETWORK

T
he Children’s Cancer Network (CCN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing assistance to Arizona families battling childhood cancer. The organization was established in 2004, but the impetus for its foundation began in 1993, when Steve and Patti Luttrell’s then five-year-old son Jeff was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The family was devastated and shocked. Jeff received treatment — including multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and finally a bone marrow transplant in order to treat the initial cancer and its four subsequent relapses. However, after nine years of being cancer free, Jeff was diagnosed with a secondary cancer, squamous cell cancer of the tongue. So, at the age of 21, Jeff had numerous additional surgeries and two types of radiation to rid his body again of cancer. Four years later, at the age of 25, this cancer re-occurred. Today, Jeff is doing well and has graduated with a graphic design degree. However, his experience led the Luttrells to want to help other families through this time. According to the Network, the emotions and experiences throughout cancer treatment and after may be complex and life changing. Often these emotions are difficult to comprehend for those who have not been there. Many families dealing with childhood cancer are faced with a new uncertainty regarding their futures. There likely are questions and needs that never would have been contemplated prior to their child’s diagnosis. Children’s Cancer Network has

been formed to focus on the needs of families and their children with cancer. The Luttells’ daughter Jenny was instrumental in the creation of the fashion show that features children dealing with cancer as well as their siblings. It was designed to be a fun and empowering event that helped to raise money to contribute to the emergency fund for families undergoing bone marrow transplant. In addition to the Fashion show, The Children’s Cancer Network has an auction and luncheon which donates raised funds to the Pediatric Bone Marrow Emergency Funds at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center. The Network also hosts a variety of events and experiences for children/teens battling childhood cancer, along with their families at no cost. One of their most exciting upcoming fundraising events is their Run to Fight Children’s Cancer 5k/10k, which will be held April 5. Register online for the event at RunToFightCancer.com. Studies have shown that music improves cognitive development in children, as well as brain efficiency, learning speed, and overall brain health. Learning to play a musical instrument helps individuals understand mathematical concepts, develop better motor

skills, teaches discipline, inspires creativity, and can help build confidence, self-esteem and social skills. There are so many different instruments and types of music that it’s difficult to know where to begin, so here are some suggestions for beginning your child’s musical journey. FIND THE RIGHT MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AND LESSONS FOR YOUR CHILD It’s important to find a music program and musical instrument that suits your child’s age and interests. Most public schools have music programs that begin teaching instruments around the fourth and fifth grade, but you can begin private lessons as young as five or six years old. Work with your kid to see what they are interested in before you get started with the time and expense of formal lessons. Here are a few important factors to keep in mind: • Age, Size, and Physical Limitations: Consider the age, size, and physical limitations of your child when you choose an instrument. • Noise Level: Think about how your neighbors and family will feel about a drum set, guitar, or loud instrument, and whether you can reduce noise and set practice times to keep the peace. • Space: Make sure you have room in your home for a piano, harp, or drum set, if that is the direction you want to go – otherwise, think about smaller, more portable instruments. • Cost: Instruments can be very expensive, so consider buying used until your child’s interest increases and skill level improves. • Time: Make sure that music lessons can fit in your schedule. Don’t let lessons cause your kid’s schoolwork or other activities to suffer or add undue stress for you or your family. The museum also provides visitors a hands-on experience of playing different instruments, and offer many camps and educational programs for kids and adults alike. Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Solid Rock is a non-profit organization started by local celebrity Alice Cooper. Their mission is to make a difference in the lives of teens by providing music, arts, and vocational programs in the field of entertainment. They challenge teens to discover their passion through music, dance, video and sound production, self-expression, and creativity. Sounds Academy Sounds Academy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach, mentor, and provide musical experiences and opportunities to underserved youth in the Phoenix area. This organization provides music education opportunities to a wide variety of children, while removing any barriers that children may have in receiving quality music education. RockyRESTAURANT Point & BAR: BRINGING SOUTH OF THE BORDER FOOD & FUN TO HIGH STREET By Molly Cerreta Smith
R
ocky Point is one of my favorite getaways. The beautiful beaches, relaxed atmosphere and authentic fresh food are all highlights of each trip my family and I take to this South of the Border treasure. But now, there is a little bit of Rocky Point right here in Phoenix. Opened in early 2020, 17,000-square-feet of Rocky Point flair now resides on High Street — offering nearby residents all the food, fun and relaxation that a quick jaunt down to Puerto Peñasco can. Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar’s Frank Morales says the north Phoenix area is the perfect location for this new concept that aims to bring a little of the owners’ hometown of Rocky Point to the Valley of the Sun. The restaurant features a comfortable patio along

the side and will be adding another to the front, dining room seating and bar seating. There is a game area with video games and pool table, which will soon be accompanied by more table games as well as a couch in front of a cozy fireplace. The white bulb lighting strung overhead gives this area the feel of the outdoors brought inside. Sliding barn doors separate the main dining area from what the owners have designated as the Barcelona Event Center. Fully equipped with a stage, lighting and equipment to host an upscale and all-out event, the Barcelona Event Center can be reserved for private events and parties including baby showers, engagement parties, bachelor/bachelorette bashes, quinceañeras and more.
Speaking of parties, Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar wouldn’t be living up to its name if it didn’t bring the level of nightlife, fun and entertainment that its south of the border namesake is known for. Open from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, the fun really begins after dark. During Barcelona Nights, DJs spin salsa, bachata, and cumbia all night long and the huge dance floor is open for guests to shake their money makers. There is always something happening here including complementary salsa lessons, live salsa bands, live orchestra and more. For special events such as fight nights and more, Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar hosts watch parties as well. But long before the sun goes down, Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar has something for

the day drinking crowd. Happy hour is offered daily from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The full bar features an extensive whiskey selection of more than 150 types — some that are very hard to find in Arizona — as well as a wide variety of sakes to accompany the fresh sushi menu (don’t worry, we’ll get to that…), 20 beers on tap (including locals like Huss Scottsdale Blonde, Papago Orange Blossom – a personal favorite – Four Peaks Kilt Lifter and Uncle Bear’s) as well as bottled selections and wine. While Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar is certainly the place to enjoy some entertainment for a date night, group night out or a happy hour, it’s also designed to offer something for everyone in the neighborhood, and that includes families.
As a family-owned restaurant, Frank and his wife Allie want everyone to feel welcomed here. Despite the upscale environment, the restaurant is unpretentious and affordable to everyone. “We’re here to take care of the neighborhood,” says Morales of their guests. While the atmosphere is draped in luxury, he wants guests to come in and feel at home. Part of that experience begins in the kitchen. Everything that is served is fresh and scratch-made. Featuring an extensive menu of not only Mexican

Morales says, “We want people to come in and taste for themselves the difference in our fresh and scratch made cooking.” Typical of a restaurant named after Rocky Point, a huge selection of tacos, quesadillas, burritos and chimichangas are on the menu. In addition to flour tortillas, the restaurant also features homemade spinach tortillas for a specialty option (at no additional charge), and proteins to be added go far beyond steak carne asada, shredded chicken or shredded beef, including smoked brisket, meatless Italian sausage, buffalo chicken, shrimp and more. Burgers, Sandwiches, Pitas and Bowls such Shrimp Teriyaki and Orange Chicken also grace the menu and include some elevated selections such as the House Special Kabab Burger featuring a fresh-made kabob patty dipped in house special sauce, lettuce, tomato cucumber and tzatziki drizzle; Chicken Bacon Avocado Sandwich and the Chicken Gyro. Specialty dishes include Butter Maple Glazed Salmon; Sizzling Fajitas; the Seafood Tower and Slow-Cooked Ribs. Now transporting from Mexico and over to Italy, Rocky Point Restaurant and Bar covers the
gamut of Italian pasta dishes and pizza. Chicken or Shrimp Fettucine; Southwest Shrimp Pesto Spaghetti; a variety of raviolis such as Maine Lobster, Beef, Wild Mushroom or Roasted Eggplant are available as well as specialty pizzas. If customers don’t see what they like – they can customize their own pizza with a variety of toppings. Remember when I mentioned the sake? Something diners might not expect from a Mexican restaurant is the vast selection of fresh-made sushi rolls – including some Mexican-Fusion selections. There are also plenty of options for the vegetarian crowd or those that prefer to go “meatless” on occasion. I could go on and on because I haven’t even covered the appetizers or desserts options yet, but what Morales really wants is for people to come in and see for themselves. Located at 5310 E. U.S. government ban on R-22 Freon took effect on January 1, 2020. This ban is part of a gradual phase-out initiated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to rid the United States of all ozone-depleting substances.

eople often ask me how much money or what the threshold net worth is before they need a Revocable Living Trust. There is no magic number. The factors that go into the decision include family situation, types of assets, location of real property, and, yes, net worth. The next question I’m asked is, “Why have a Trust?”
WITHOUT A TRUST, WE FILE FOR CONSERVATORSHIP Without a Trust, control over your finances may require a court proceeding known as a conservatorship. One attorney I know who does these proceedings called conservatorships “cumbersome.” They are also quite costly; far more than the cost of creating a Trust.

THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST GIVES INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU ARE INCAPACITATED Both a Will and a Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets if you become incapacitated. The Trust allows a successor you have chosen to step into your shoes to pay your bills, manage your assets, sell property if needed, and generally handle your financial affairs.
Money isn’t the only cost of conservatorship. Your family is asking the court to declare you incompetent. As you can imagine, this takes a huge emotional toll on everyone. It takes time too, both to have the proceeding, and to make accountings to the court according to its rigorous guidelines. Lastly, the conservatorship is a very public affair. There are no locked doors in the courthouse on these. With
a Trust, we maintain our privacy. We state in the Trust how and when it should be decided that we can no longer handle our affairs. THE BOTTOM LINE It is important to be sure someone can manage your affairs if you are incapacitated. The Trust is an ideal

re you ready to spring into action during the height of the home selling season? We hope so, because inventory remains extremely low and there is great demand for homes in our area! Before you schedule the photos and pick your price though, you might want to consider setting the stage. Yes, when you’re selling your home, it’s best to think about your home becoming a store that will be open for customers to visit, so you want to set-up or “stage” the store appropriately. LIGHTING First and foremost, make it light and bright. Have you ever walked into a store and the lights are off? No. So, make sure you leave your window coverings open and the lights on. Lighting makes a home feel happier. SIZE & SPACE When Buyers see a large or small space, they often don’t know what to do with it. People have a hard time determining how to potentially use
or furnish a vacant space, so showing them can be very helpful to ensure they understand the home.
WHERE TO FOCUS It may not be necessary to stage every room in the house, but the critical rooms to consider are the living room, dining room, family room and master bedroom. SOUND An often overlooked, yet impactful staging tip is sound. When you’re in a silent home, it can be unsettling, so Buyers will rush to look at the home and they will miss out on an opportunity to connect with the home. They will also focus more on the noise they are creating with their shoes or by talking, and that will distract them from the home and hurry them out the door. EMOTIONAL CONNECTION You want to consider the importance of setting the mood and ultimately, you want people to fall in love with the home. The goal is to have Buyers picture themselves living in the home and creating wonderful memories
there, so you want to help them create those mental pictures; sitting at the dining room table with friends and family, reading a book while relaxing by the fireplace, having their morning coffee or glass of wine at the end of the day. Adding accessories that add an emotional connection can be helpful.
DISTRACTION Another reason to stage a home is to distract from any challenges the home may present. No home is perfect, so staging can help you to influence the Buyer and help them create a list of reasons to fall in love with your home, versus a list of issues with the home. Maybe your kitchen is small, or the flooring is dated, or family room is an odd shape. The buyer won’t care as much about those things if they can look around and picture themselves having a fabulous life. HOW TO GET STARTED If you need to stage your home, you can partner with your Realtor, hire a professional Stager or interior decorator or you can do it yourself. Depending on the scope of the project,
you may want to invest in consulting with a professional who has the tools, resources and experience to ensure it’s done right. Be sure to check references, see samples of their work and discuss the “look” of the project.

THE OLD W E S T HIGHWAY I
f you’re heading east towards New Mexico and want to venture off the beaten path and avoid the extreme traffic on I-10, consider taking a trip down the Old West Highway. This historic route between Apache Junction, AZ, and Lordsburg, NM, runs through the Superstition Wilderness on US Highway 60, over the Salt River Canyon between Superior and MiamiGlobe, and through the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. It continues east through tiny Arizona towns like Bylas and Safford, moving east on Highway 70 to the tiny town of Duncan, ending in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The road winds through mountains, farmland, and history on a mostly twolane road through the eastern part of the state. Here are a few of the places on the Old West Highway that we recommend visiting near the Phoenix area. APACHE TRAIL One of the most spectacular, and heart-pounding, side trips you can take from the Old West Highway is the Apache Trail. Arizona State Route 88 is a mostly unpaved, steep and winding road connecting Apache Junction to Roosevelt Lake in the Tonto National Forest. The Apache Trail, named after the Apache Indians who once used this as a regular trade route, passes through

desert, mountains, lakes, and forests in the Superstition Wilderness, on the way to places like Lost Dutchman State Park, Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, the Roosevelt Dam and the Tonto National Monument. Use caution because the Apache Trail winds steeply through 40 miles of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes, and the narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flats all the way to Roosevelt Dam. Be prepared for steep cliff drops and few safety barriers. The trail is not for the faint of heart, nor is it recommended for large RVs or trailers, but the scenery along this road is breathtaking. LOST DUTCHMAN STATE PARK Lost Dutchman State Park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains, about 40 miles east of Phoenix. The park is named after a legendary lost gold mine in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, and is known for breathtaking scenery, trails, and wildlife. It’s also famous for having a fantastic wildflower bloom in the spring and one of the most challenging hikes in the Superstition Mountains, the renown Siphon Draw Trail that takes hikers to the top of the rock wall surface of the Flatiron.

TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT Nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain to see ancient cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved, but fairly steep path up the mountain. Check in at the Visitor Center and be sure to begin your hike before 4:00 p.m. to make sure you make it back down the trail before dark. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a three to four-hour guided tour, so plan ahead to book your tour in advance. SUPERIOR Superior had its origins as a mining town, drawing prospectors and mining companies to the area. Fortunately, one of those settlers was Colonel Boyce Thompson, who founded one of our favorite places to visit in the area, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Established in the 1920s, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. The Arboretum is on
Highway 60, just outside of Superior, and a beautiful spot for a day trip or a place to stop when you travel down the Old West Highway on the way to Globe. GLOBE Globe is a great town to visit to get a taste of the historic Old West Highway and Arizona’s Territorial history. Whether you want to visit ancient Indian ruins, see the historic downtown, shop for antiques, or enjoy the works of local artists, Globe has a little bit of everything. Our favorite stop in Globe is the ruins of Besh-BaGowah, a 200-room prehistoric Salado masonry pueblo overlooking Pinal Creek. The site is located in a small city park and includes a museum and gift shop with excavated items like prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts. As Arizonans, we live in a state that is full of natural wonders and beautiful scenery all year round. Many of these fantastic places are in or near the Phoenix area, so take time to visit different parts of the Sonoran Desert near you and enjoy the Arizona wilderness up close. Mike and Marcus have to deal with the fallout of an enemy that Mike put away long ago. Bad Boys for Life proves that long-dormant franchises have no excuses in not only producing something new that is great, but also taking it to the next level. It’s got the fun, over-the-top action you know and love while bringing a more neon and Asian cinema inspired style to it. Surprisingly, it also tells a more mature and caring story about family (and not in an ironic way like the Fast and Furious movies). It’s refreshing to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence truly give their all here, while also bringing us new and well-developed characters. It may not be the gleeful anarchy of Michael Bay’s previous films, but I am thankful that it exists.
BIRDS OF PREY
Harley Quinn teams up with a group of antiheroes to fight a crime lord in Gotham City. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is another great piece in DC’s current series of directordriven films. The sun-soaked, dirty Gotham shown here is a nice departure from the dark and dank city we typically see. This film offered an amusing tone and story with a surprising pull at the heartstrings. We have an absolutely fantastic cast here, where Margot Robbie continues to showcase that she was the perfect choice for Quinn. The newly introduced characters were also all expertly cast and showcase distinct personalities that add to the group dynamic. I especially love Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as a pretentious but still scary art-loving villain rounds out the troop perfectly.

When the film has Colin Farrell and a breakdancing gang on screen, it’s the rare moment that The Gentlemen gains some real audience enthusiasm. Beyond that, Guy Ritchie’s “back to form” film feels less like a homecoming and more like a depressing high school reunion. You’ve seen these characters, set ups and jokes a million times before. Ritchie doesn’t seem to do anything new with the formula. The usage of technology comes up multiple times in the film, but it doesn’t add any value or play a role in our characters’ arcs. The actors do fine with what they’re given, but again, beyond Farrell, they do nothing to elevate the material. Unfortunately, it does the worst thing a movie can do...be boring.
THE RHYTHM SECTION
A woman goes on a mission to find those responsible for the death of her family. Reed Morano has proven to be a major addition to action directors, as Rhythm Section gives her the shot to pull off some good set pieces. In particular, her car chase scene is a lovely balance between raw and exciting. The problems that I see with this flick are the messy and morally confused screenplay, wonky editing and a miscast Blake Lively. Dark storytelling can be great, but there needs to be energy behind it. Showing misery for an hour and 40 minutes doesn’t just make something dark and edgy, it makes it depressing.

I
’ve been eating and writing my way through the valley as a profession for more than 20 years. And one of my very first foodie assignments when I was fresh out of college was to interview Tomaso Maggiore. I arrived at Tomaso’s at lunchtime as scheduled and I was led to a large table of probably 15 people, Tomaso among them, already dining and drinking, laughing and talking — almost entirely in Italian. Tomaso pulled a chair out for me right next to him and made me feel as comfortable as a newbie writer could in a situation like that. The lunch went on for hours; the memory remains. So when I learned about Tomaso’s newest concept in my neck of the woods, I was delighted. Now a little history about this local culinary legend… A true Sicilian at heart, Tomaso Maggiore discovered his love for food
during his upbringing in Italy. He developed his first concept, Tomaso’s, in 1977 and has successfully managed and cultivated restaurant concepts for four decades while consistently creating new ways to expand the Italian-inspired culinary empire through his passion and craft for cooking. He joined forces with his son, Joey Maggiore, to launch The Maggiore Group, which also operates Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher and The Sicilian Baker. In 2019, he opened Tomaso’s Italian Kitchen for a moderncasual experience with everyday Italian food, fresh pasta made daily, shareable boards, and entrees that are made here that taste like they were made in Italy.
