MIDWEST FOOD BANK

idwest Food Bank is making a big impact in Arizona. Since coming to Arizona in March of 2017, Midwest Food Bank has been supplying food to local food pantries throughout our state. In 2018, the food bank distributed over 5.3 million pounds of food to help Arizonans in need.

Midwest Food Bank had its start in 2003 when three farmer brothers heard that food pantries in Illinois were having trouble keeping enough food on the shelves. The brothers felt that was something that they could help with, so they opened the Midwest Food Bank in a utility shed on their farm. In 2005, the brothers took their pledge to help abroad and were there for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. What started out as one semi-load of food, almost everything MFB had on hand, ended up being 167 loads by the end of the recovery efforts. It was then that disaster recovery was added to the Midwest Food Bank mission. Most recently the MFB Arizona division sent semi-loads of supplies to the victims of the California wildfires.

Midwest Food Bank is a distribution level food bank.

That means it is designed to receive large quantities of food and bulk packaged food that smaller food pantries would have to decline. Executive Director, Patrick Hodgkins, says, “We have an army of volunteers that transport, package, label, and reconfigure food so we are able to give it to our local partners and get it to the ones that need it.” Anything MFB receives is donated to their partners free of charge. All MFB partners are required to commit to never sell, barter, or trade the food they receive from MFB. According to Q. Nielsen, Operations Manager, “Even when we have to buy food to meet the need, we will not charge for it.

That is just not our way.”

Because of their donation model, MFB is always looking for partners to support their efforts with donations of food or finances. MFB is a top-rated charity with Charity Navigators having received 4 stars for 7 consecutive years. While all donations are appreciated, Midwest Food Bank is focused currently on the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. This credit allows Arizonians to donate to MFB and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit. Hodgkins also tells us that a generous donor has provided thank you gifts for Tax Credit donors, “If

you donate on our website, www.mwfbTaxCredit.com, and type ‘NEWSPAPER’ in the memo line we will send you a thank you polo shirt. One per full single donation and two for a full married donation.” Eric Sheldahl, Chairman of the Board, states emphatically, “We are good stewards of your donations! 99 percent of all donations go straight into the food program. We are able to turn a $1 donation into $25 of food.”

Two years in Arizona is just the start. MFB is now an Arizona fixture serving 285 pantries, with remote distributions in Tucson and on the reservations.

Says Hodgkins, “We will continue to grow and look for ways to partner with others in Arizona to battle hunger!”

YEARS OF LITIGATION AT CITY NORTH END AS CROWN REALTY & DEVELOPMENT

ACQUIRES DEVELOPER RIGHTS FOR DESERT RIDGE LAND CROWN REALTY & DEVELOPMENT, A RENOWNED CALIFORNIA-DEVELOPER BEHIND SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS IN ARIZONA, through controlled affiliates, has closed on 96.5 acres and acquired the “Master Developer” rights in North Phoenix’s Desert Ridge master planned community. The property and rights have been the subject of active litigation and bankruptcy for a decade. Crown now plans to develop the land as a new urban core in Phoenix.

significant retail development that was to include Bloomingdales, Nordstrom’s and Macy’s. The recession and years of litigation prevented the project from moving beyond the High Street portion that was completed in 2008.

“It’s impossible to grow new land but the slumbering status of this property for the last decade or more does exactly that, as the end of litigation means the start of development for what is unquestionably one of the best pieces of real estate in Arizona, and perhaps America,” said Rick Carpinelli, Senior Vice President of Acquisition and Development at Crown.

Carpinelli noted that the greater Phoenix market is maturing with corporate headquarters for technology, healthcare and financial service companies moving to and expanding in the market. The majority of that growth has been centered in Tempe or the Southeast Valley where land and zoning has been plentiful to meet the demand. That all changes with City North jumping onto everyone’s short list.

The land Crown has acquired is zoned for about 2,500 residential units, 2.0 million square feet of office, 500 hotel rooms and 100,000 square feet of retail.

The acquired acreage comprises the majority of the vacant land east of the 1.2 million square foot Desert Ridge Marketplace and that surrounds the existing High Street. “Unlocking this parcel from years of litigation now provides the opportunity to develop a 21st century urban community on the north side of Phoenix,” said Robert Flaxman, CEO of Crown. “What Century City was to Los Angeles in the 1960s, the new City North project will be to Phoenix,” he said.

Flaxman said there is now finality about litigation and certainty about future development on what many consider to be Phoenix Metro’s most prized, undeveloped commercial property. As part of bankruptcy court proceedings all claims have been settled. As part of the judgment, Crown obtained what are known as “master developer” rights not only for its 100-acre site but also the entire 5,700 acres from the 51 Freeway to 64th Street and on both sides of the heavily trafficked Loop 101.

That’s approximately five square miles in the City of Phoenix’s highest-growth corridor.

Prior to the Great Recession and the more recent legal imbroglio, significant commercial development did occur at Desert Ridge in the late 1990s and early 2000s with Desert Ridge Marketplace, Mayo Clinic, JW Marriott Resort, American Express and thousands of residences.

With this closing by Crown, the City of Phoenix now has the opportunity to better capture pent up demand in the Valley and create a second urban node for the city.

Mayo Clinic has recently announced plans to double the size of its nearby 250-acre campus with a $650 million investment. Arizona State University has broken ground on its first 166,000 square foot building on its adjacent healthcare campus. American Express is also under construction on a new 300,000 square foot building expanding its current employee base of 5,000 to 8,000.

These developments show the demand for growth in this North Phoenix sub-market and were able to proceed because they were properties outside

of the litigation that has stymied more growth in Desert Ridge. This all changes thanks to Crown’s successful conclusion of litigation and acquisition.

Crown acquired the 96.5 acres and Master Developer rights in Desert Ridge as a final, nonappealable step in what has been a long series of various litigation matters.

In late 2015 and early 2016 affiliates of Bruce Gray and Gray Development defaulted on notes owned by Crown. One of the notes was secured by the 96.5 acres of land that surrounds the High Street property as well as the Desert Ridge Master Developer rights. In the years that Gray held these rights, not one shred of development occurred. Gray filed bankruptcy in May 2016. The bankruptcy was resolved in March 2018 with a ruling from U.S. Bankruptcy Court that became a final and non-appealable order. The ruling ordered the sale of the Desert Ridge property through a court appointed trustee. Beth Jo Zeitzer of ROI Properties was appointed by the court to be the trustee to oversee the marketing and sale of the property. The bid deadline for the court ordered sale was January 15, 2019. Crown’s credit bid was the winning bid and thus Crown purchased the property and Master Developer Rights, closing on January 28.

Crown, which has locally developed the Montelucia Resort (now an Omni property) and spearheaded the redevelopment of Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, now plans to develop what will essentially be a new city on the coveted property.

“The new City North project will include a residential core, office buildings from four to ten stories, vibrant new restaurants, a full-service hotel and several select service hotels,” said Carpinelli.

“All of this is great news for existing residents of the area soon to get more amenities as well as future residents and employers who will be able to call this amazing slice of Arizona home,” said Flaxman.

Crown is already working with several major corporate users looking to locate their business at Desert Ridge. Crown will begin developing the property this spring and plans to complete the streets, sidewalks and landscaping by the end of 2019. In addition, Crown anticipates the first office building, the first residential project and the first restaurant all starting construction this year. northtatumtimes.com

AMERICAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF NEW LONDON SERVICE AMERICA’S FRIENDLIEST AIRPORT® IS MAKING IT EVEN MORE CONVENIENT FOR TRAVELERS TO FLY NONSTOP to Europe from Phoenix. American Airlines previously announced last August that it will be offering nonstop service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to London Heathrow Airport beginning March 31 and running through October 26. Now, American Airlines has announced this service will be offered year-round.

“New international air service helps Phoenix grow our economy and global presence,” said Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams. “I am excited that American Airlines will be offering year-round, direct service from Phoenix to London. The service, which is American’s first-ever overseas intercontinental flight from Phoenix to London,

will be served by a Boeing 777-200ER. It will offer 273 seats with three classes of service: Business Class; Premium Economy; and Main Cabin service.

American is the only domestic carrier with nonstop service to Europe from Sky Harbor.

For travelers, this provides another valuable connection between Phoenix and Europe for both business and leisure as well as a boost to the economy. International flights to and from Phoenix bring in approximately $3 billion each year.

In addition to American’s service, British Airways continues to offer its daily nonstop service, departing from Phoenix at 7:45 p.m. The airlines’ flights to London provide travelers with 14 flights per week, and an easy connection to those wishing to travel beyond London.

Extended service on Condor Airlines to Frankfurt from Phoenix also begins again in May and runs through October. From Phoenix Sky Harbor, travelers will find access to more than 100 domestic destinations and 22 international destinations.

ccording to an American Express study, female entrepreneurship grew by 114 percent between 1997 and 2017. In 2017, there were over 11.6 million female owned firms in the US, employing nearly 9 million people and generating approximately $1.7 trillion in revenue. These are great statistics, yet womenowned businesses are still making significantly less than their male counterparts, with 88 percent generating less than $100,000 in annual revenues.

VIOLINS OF HOPE: JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PHOENIX COLLABORATES TO BRING INSPIRING EXHIBITION TO ARIZONA

I

n 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, immediately founding his first concentration camp in Dachau.

In 1935, he issued the Nuremberg Laws, excluding Jewish people from public life across Germany.

By 1945, more than six million Jewish people were murdered across Europe during the Holocaust.

“We believe that in keeping the memory and lessons of the Holocaust alive, we prevent silence and indifference in future generations,” says Marty Haberer, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.

In an effort to give a voice to those lost during those darkest of days in our history, the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and other community partners, thanks to the diligent work by local volunteers Julee Landau Shahon and Rachel Hoffer, and in partnership with more than 50 Arizona nonprofits, schools and businesses, is proud to present Violins of Hope.

VIOLINS OF HOPE Violins of Hope tells the remarkable stories of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Today these instruments serve not only as powerful reminders of an unimaginable experience but also reinforce lessons of tolerance, inclusion, and diversity.

The violins were first discovered by Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein, who as a young violinmaker more than 50 years ago was asked to restore a particular violin.

The customer shared with Weinstein – who himself

lost hundreds of relatives during the Holocaust – that the violin was played by a musician at Auschwitz as he marched to the gas chamber. The musician was spared by the Nazis and forced to play at the camp afterwards.

Weinstein, who discovered what appeared to be ashes when he opened the violin case, was unable to restore that instrument. The memory was too painful at the time. But in 1996, by then a master violin-maker, Weinstein put out a worldwide call for violins from the Holocaust.

He sought out to restore every single one he could find as a way to reclaim his lost heritage and to give a voice to the victims.

The Violins of Hope have been played in concert halls and exhibited in museums worldwide.

They have been featured in books, print, film and television. Their stories and messages have impacted hundreds of thousands of individuals worldwide.

VIOLINS OF HOPE PHOENIX Throughout March, Phoenix and Scottsdale will play host to dozens of Violins of Hope Phoenix events.

NOW THROUGH MARCH 24: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will feature a Violins of Hope Exhibition. Monday-Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm, Sunday, noon-5. Docent-led tours (free).

MARCH 23 AND 24: The Arizona Science Center Planetarium will host Chinese-American violinist Xiang (Sean) Gao as he gives an exclusive preview of a multi-media production based on stories of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees during the Holocaust.

“This incredible program will be the largest collaborative project ever undertaken in greaterPhoenix, with Jewish and non-Jewish community organizations partnering in celebrating music, education, history and culture. It is a wtremendous opportunity for the Federation to connect with community members and organizations and demonstrate unity in our shared values,” says Landau Shahon.

MARCH 24: The Arizona Opera will perform selections from Brundibar, a children’s opera originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt. Then, the Phoenix Boys Choir will perform I Never Saw Another Butterfly, with a Violins of Hope finale. I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on poems written

by Jewish children imprisoned in Theresienstadt. It serves as both a dramatic reminder of the Holocaust as well as a remembrance for these children, most of whose lives were extinguished soon after their poetry was written.

DISNEY’S MAGIC TOUCHES ARIZONA FINE ART EXPO ARTIST JACINTHE DUGAL-LACROIX WAS INVITED TO EPCOT FESTIVAL OF FINE ART AND IS CREATING A SCULPTURE WITH THE MOVIE “FROZEN” AS HER INSPIRATION

I

n the last few weeks of the Arizona Fine Art EXPO, one artist’s mind is off in a far-away land. Jacinthe Dugal-Lacroix may be sculpting and painting at the fine art show in north Scottsdale, but she’s deep in thought at a remote snowy kingdom where a Snow Queen’s icy spell has caused all kinds of chaos.

An acclaimed artist from Canada, Dugal-Lacroix recently began working with Wyland Gallery in Florida, where she was invited to showcase her work at the Epcot Festival of Fine Art in February. She also has been commissioned by the gallery to create licensed bronze sculptures with the Disney film “Frozen” as her inspiration.

“The invitation to exhibit my work at the Epcot Festival of Fine Art was quite an honor,” DugalLacroix said. “I’m particularly proud of my new work, The Bluebell Collection, which depicts two whimsical characters, a dog named Blue and a dragon named Bell. The name Bluebell comes from the translation of my name, Jacinthe, which is the flower ‘bluebell’ in English. I plan to have both Blue and Bell in every sculpture interacting with different story lines including kids in most of them. As of now, I have about 22 scenarios written down. I can’t wait to transform these scenarios into whimsical bronze sculptures and paintings.”

Living in a far-away land is actually something Dugal-Lacroix can relate to. Several years ago, she and her husband, Marc, gave up their home to travel and exhibit her work throughout North America fulltime in their RV, which they affectionately call ‘the Vagabond Bus.’

“It’s quite an adventure,” Dugal-Lacroix said. “Our RV is 43 feet long and we have a 27-foot trailer hooked to the back. Bumper to bumper we are 70 feet long. I can sculpt smaller pieces inside of the RV, but most of my work is done either in my trailer studio or outside at campsites and other stops.”

While The Bluebell Collection will be available for sale at Arizona Fine Art EXPO, Dugal-Lacroix’s “Frozen” sculptures will only be available for sale through Disney. She has several other pieces from her “Dancer” series that are for sale at the fine art show, including life-size and table-top sculptures and paintings.

Arizona Fine Art EXPO is open daily through March 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the festive white tents located at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road, on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax Roads next to MacDonald’s Ranch.

NURTURE YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPING MINDSET

W

hat if the way to your child’s success in school is found in the way he or she thinks about intelligence and the ability to persist with challenging tasks?

Stanford University professor Carol Dweck has studied the learning patterns of children for over 30 years.

She’s found that there are similarities between kids who are open-minded and persistent in the face of academic challenges, and those who share a perspective of one’s intelligence as innate and, for the most part, unchangeable. The open-minded and persistent student believes he or she has the potential to improve, while the narrow-minded student holds tightly to the belief that intelligence is something one is born with and therefore an established attribute for self and others to judge.

Within each of us is an internal mental world where our thoughts and feelings reside. Each of us has a unique way of thinking about and framing the world around us—what most of us think of as a mindset. Our mindset consists of thoughts, feelings, perceptions, memories, beliefs, and attitudes.

Further, it is our unique mindset that sets forth our way of thinking about learning.

Every child experiences the classroom differently, but when it comes to learning, scientific studies support the idea of a fixed or growth mindset as the regulator of one’s behavior. A child with a growth mindset believes that his or her intelligence, skills, and abilities are strengthened through deliberate practice and effort and are continually under development throughout life.

On the other hand, a child with a fixed mindset sees his or her intelligence and abilities as unchangeable.

As children grow, they do so physically,

intellectually, emotionally, socially; let’s call these modalities. Here are some nurturing nuggets for shaping the modalities of a growth mindset in your child.

PHYSICAL NURTURING NUGGETS: Practice, practice, practice. How do you nurture improvement of performance? You have to apply yourself to the task, becoming a little better every day.

INTELLECTUAL NURTURING NUGGETS: For every problem, there is a solution. The child with the growth mindset sees mistakes as opportunities to learn, instead of as personal failures.

Help your child learn to engage with the world of ideas and teach them to set learning goals and to strive to work through difficulties.

EMOTIONAL NURTURING NUGGETS: When you get upset, reset. Teach your child how to

change their frame of mind when they make a mistake. The child with a growth mindset is not derailed by difficulty. Rather, setbacks are seen as opportunities to find something worth learning.

SOCIAL NURTURING NUGGETS: Speak up and listen. Developing one’s voice should be balanced with the willingness and ability to listen. Reinforce growth by praising your child’s efforts, strategies, and improvements, not by praising talent.

Being aware of the fixed and growth mindsets should help you and your child slow down and explore teachable moments.

And just as with everything in life, it all starts with a parent or caregiver modeling the right mindset and instilling values necessary for constant and never-ending improvement of one’s abilities.

aradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is pleased to announce the opening of the Integrated Health Science Center.

Located in the Q Building at the PVCC Union Hills campus located off of 32nd Street and Union Hills, the Integrated Health Science Center is an innovative instructional space that provides a venue for students to gain hands-on experience and apply their knowledge in a practical setting, while also offering a tangible benefit to the community.

Remodeled using Prop 301 funds, this new facility provides shared space for several PVCC health degree programs including Nursing, Exercise Science, Integrated Public Health, EMT/ Fire Science/Paramedic, Healthcare Technology, and Dietetic Technology.

ccording to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in 1970 children didn’t start regularly watching TV until they were four years old. Today, they report that children begin interacting with digital media at four months old. One look around and it’s easy to see that many children have their own cell phone, tablet, television, or other type of screen that is occupying a lot of their time and attention. The problem with this is with all that screen time, there are numerous ways that research shows it may be harming kids. From the smallest of toddlers who are glued to watching tablets and televisions, to teens who are using their devices almost constantly, it’s prompted concerns that every parent should be aware of.

“There is no denying that technology plays a major role in our lives today, but when it comes to our children, we need to be aware of the challenges it can cause,” explains Reena B. Patel, a parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, and author.

“Children’s cognition skills are still developing, so it’s imperative that we take that into account when it comes to their screen usage time.”

In the same report, the AAP reports that 75 percent of children ages 0-8 have access to a mobile device, and that most one and two-year-olds are using a mobile device on a daily basis. This trend continues through every age group. The average 8-10-year-old is spending around eight hours per day on various forms of media, and older children are spending more than 11 hours per day. A Pew Research Center report shows that 24 percent of teens go online “almost constantly,” and 92 percent of them report using their mobile devices on a daily basis.

Most parents realize that children also engage in learning activities and even have homework assignments they need to use screens for. They are a part of life and a part of their learning experience, as well as their entertainment one. Rather than sheltering kids from social media and screens, parents should strive for teaching them healthier ways to use them, and how to maintain a balance. With screens here to stay, it’s important that parents take steps to help keep their child’s time spent on them in check. Here are some tips to do just that: • It’s recommended that children under the age of two not be exposed to screen time at all. For children over the age of two, it’s recommended that the screen time be kept to one to two hours per day at the most.

• Encourage kids to create a balance between screen time and non-screen time. It’s important that kids of all ages engage in physical and social activities that do not involve the usage of screens. Encourage them to have real-life relationships, rather than their friendships being all online or done through electronics.

• Create rules that will help give them boundaries about when they can use their devices. For example, no devices at meals, and no phones allowed in their bedrooms overnight.

he summer months are coming soon and parents all over the Valley are scrambling to find ideas for ways to keep their kids busy or provide weekly childcare while they are out of school. One solution many parents take advantage of is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your kids this year.

WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids are allowed to safely roam and play in a way the often aren’t in their own neighborhoods these days. Whether they are at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, or overnight camp, kids get to let loose and have fun with other kids outside of a school or home environment. Not only are summer camps a great way for your kids to have fun, get exercise and stay active during the months they are out of school, they also teach important life lessons such as how to make new friends and gain independence.

You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp with lakeside cabins in the woods, to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different scientific and STEM-related topics, to soccer, gymnastics, karate or basketball.

Some things to consider when deciding on the right camp include the following: Know Your Goal: Do you need fullday care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the

house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child.

Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different types of camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets they may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by letting them try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like. For example, if your kid hates team sports, soccer camp may not be a great idea.

Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money, especially if you send your kid to a specialized place. Be sure that you consider all of the expenses involved, including equipment, meals and extras. There are also a variety of options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for non-profit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community

centers and libraries for lower cost options.

Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Know the location of the camp, to make sure you can get to and from day camp and that the times and routes work for your family. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have.

Timing is a pretty key element when picking a camp.

Do Your Homework: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family.

ecently we visited the D.R. Horton Paradise Ridge which is located at 18231 North 66th St. in Phoenix. This new community is west of Scottsdale Road/Mayo Boulevard. This location is excellent – convenient to the Scottdale 101 complex (with great restaurants, Harkins, Bed Bath & Beyond) as well as the retail businesses across the street where Whole Foods, the Container Store, Star Power, Gordon Biersch and other stores are located.

We were shown the two furnished model homes on-site. The models are the MIRAVAL (two-story, 3,478 square foot, 5 Bedroom, 4 Bath, Dining Room, Great Room, Den, Loft, 4-car garage starting at $654,990) and the CROW (Two Story, 2,576 square foot, 4 Bedroom, 2.5 Bath, Dining Room, Great Room, Den, Loft, Courtyard and tandem 3-car garage starting at $554,990). The designers, D.R. Horton staff, did a magnificent job in showcasing these two models. Note that there are no plans to build more furnished models.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ADHD

W

e’ve all heard the term ADHD, but what is it really? ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a disorder that makes it difficult for a person to pay attention and control impulsive behaviors. If these issues are ongoing and you feel that they are negatively impacting your life, it could be a sign of ADHD. People who have ADHD have combinations of these symptoms: • Overlook or miss details, make careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or during other activities.

• Have problems sustaining attention in tasks or play, including conversations, lectures, or lengthy reading.

• Seem to not listen when spoken to directly.

• Fail to not follow through on instructions, fail to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace, or start tasks but quickly lose focus and get easily sidetracked.

• Have problems organizing tasks and activities, such as doing tasks in sequence, keeping materials and belongings in order, keeping work organized, managing time, and meeting deadlines.

• Avoid or dislike tasks that require sustained mental effort, such as schoolwork or homework, or for teens and older adults, preparing reports, completing forms, or reviewing lengthy papers.

• Lose things necessary for tasks or activities, such as school supplies, wallets, keys, paperwork, eyeglasses.

• Become easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or stimuli.

• Forgetful in daily activities, such as chores, errands, returning calls, and keeping appointments.

• Getting up and moving around in situations when staying seated is expected, such as in the classroom or in the office.

• Running or dashing around or climbing in situations where it is inappropriate, or, in teens and adults, often feeling restless.

of learning disabilities, can have similar symptoms. It is important to find a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or a Psychiatrist who will take the time to learn all about you or your child in order to correctly diagnose and provide the correct medications.

What should I do if I feel that my child or I have ADHD? ADHD is commonly treated with medication, education or training, therapy, or a combination of treatments. There are many different types and brands of medications—all with potential benefits and side effects. Sometimes several different medications or dosages must be tried before finding the one that works most effectively. Anyone taking medications must be monitored closely by their prescribing psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatrist. For many people, ADHD medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn.

What do I do if my medications aren’t working?

It is important to have a provider who takes the time to look at the individualized struggles. One tool that should always be used is to obtain the Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scale (VADRS) from teachers. This allows the provider to determine if functioning changes throughout the day or with certain subjects. It also helps to determine the proper timing of medication administration. Nutrition, sleep, and gaming practices are also variables to consider and should be discussed.

What are the risks if I don’t treat ADHD? It is imperative to treat ADHD and to treat it early on. The risks and benefits of treatment with medications should always be discussed, however, many times the risks of NOT treating ADHD can be much worse and are frequently overlooked. Examples are; academic challenges, social struggles, greater substance use risk, car accidents, and less likely to attend or graduate from college.

For adults, untreated ADHD also affects job performance and lifetime earnings, marital satisfaction, and increases the likelihood of divorce.

I

n support of Governor Doug Ducey’s declaration of January as Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) continues its commitment to combating human trafficking, especially trafficked children, as a top priority. In 2018 alone, AZDPS oversaw the rescue of 20 endangered, missing, abducted, abused, exploited or trafficked children. Of those, 13 were endangered runaways and one was a trafficking victim.

2019 has also been off to a successful start with two recent rescues highlighted below: • On January 11, 2019, what started out as a narcotics investigation, led to the rescue of a 17-year-old girl who was being used to sell drugs and was being trafficked. Two people, Donald Jackson, 37 and Tennessee Jackson 37, both of Phoenix were arrested and booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail on charges of money laundering, narcotics offenses and sex trafficking.

• On January 13, 2019, troopers stopped and arrested Carlie Bentley, 49 of Kentucky, who drove to San Diego, CA to pick up a 14-year-old child with the purpose of engaging in sexual acts. This case is now being handled by the FBI’s San Diego office.

As part of its commitment to combating these offenses, AZDPS Trooper Rachel De La Torre coordinates statewide resources and training for the public, juvenile probation, victims of human trafficking, Arizona law enforcement and others on the subject of human trafficking and other child crimes.

Working out of the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC), Trooper De La Torre also oversees the Interdiction for the Protection of Children (IPC) program. This program provides law enforcement officers, prosecutors, child advocates and others who work closely with children the knowledge and skill to recognize victims of trafficking and to coordinate resources for assistance. Since the training was adopted in Arizona in 2014, over 700 have been trained statewide.

A group of art traders and exhibitors face the consequences of greed when a collection of art pieces is found to be cursed.

Dan Gilroy took what is essentially a slasher film under the cover of a high brow horror that’s about killer art. If that’s not enough to convince you, it’s got smart social commentary on the backstabbing and fake nature of those who will do anything to get what they need. There are great performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Collette, John Malkovich, and more. And there are fantastic kills too.

The worlds of Unbreakable and Split collide when the three leads are contained in a psychiatric hospital.

Glass is M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece.

This is a movie about gaslighting, trickery & those who will do anything to keep “natural values.” Instead of helping those in need or at a disadvantage, they push them down, and present those in need as villains when they have nowhere else to go. It doesn’t absolve the sins of the ones in need, but it makes you empathize even with the villain characters.

The combination of the characters from the preceding two films feels natural, and the main three (Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson) are incredible. As if the cast couldn’t get any better, they are joined by Sarah Paulson. The atmosphere of isolation and loneliness is captured perfectly by Shyamalan and DoP Mike Gioulakis. The score by West Dylan Thordson is amazing, and literally adds a ticking clock feeling to the film.

rebuilt and becomes a bounty hunter in the metropolis of Iron City.

Alita is clearly the passion project of producer and co-writer James Cameron. While he didn’t direct it, his influence is felt throughout it, to the point that actual director Robert Rodriguez’s style is lost save for a few select moments, his chaotic and anarchic glee gone.

However, he does a great job transitioning into big budget filmmaking, especially in regard to action, where the editing and camerawork compliments it. As far as the cast goes, Rosa Salazar is fantastic as the title character. We watch her go from a wide-eyed, child-like performance to a genuinely badass fighter. The characters in the supporting cast aren’t as developed, but the cast is just so good that it makes up for it. Plot wise, it is a generic origin story and doesn’t do much different, but it’s the production design and VFX that almost makes up for it and immerses you into the world. The cyborgs in particular are impressive with how the human parts so naturally fit with the inhuman ones.

THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART

Five years after the events of The Lego Movie, Emmet must save what’s left of Bricksburg and his friends when an alien species invades.

A sequel that definitely tries to be greater than the original, it does sometimes feel overstuffed in trying to be a musical, continuing Emmet and Lucy’s stories and its own themes.

But there are just so many good aspects here.

The songs are fresh and exciting, and the musical angle feels right within the Lego universe. It also addresses the misconceptions of “Everything Is Awesome” in a clever way. Lastly, it manages to tackle themes of insecurity, feelings of being unloved and how age differences can affect the relationships between siblings. All of this in a funny, all ages friendly adventure with charming animation.

A. There are three types of hair: straight, wavy and curly. And, three type of textures: fine, medium and coarse. So, your hair can be any variety of these types and textures. Look at your hair to see which of these you have, or you can ask your stylist.

Q. What is the best way to handle my curly hair?

A. Curly hair is made up of one hundred or more strands of hair formed together to make the design of the particular curl. If the curl is separated into a single strand, it is considered frizz. Applying products on the hair such as mousse, gels, crèmes, oils or boosters will allow the strands to gather together and form its curl.

Q. How do I know if a perm or body wave is right for my hair?

A. There are a few important steps before deciding to get a perm or body wave. First, your hairstylist should examine your hair to check its texture for the porosity and PH balance. (If the hair is in poor condition, you should not get one of these treatments!) Your stylist should also give you an AAT test to see if you are allergic to the product solution. Next, they should

A. Hair breakage happens when the hair is STRESSED OUT. This can be caused by a variety of things including excessive hair washing, using the wrong products for your hair type/texture, over-styling, using too hot of tools & too lengthy time, using too strong of a developer with the mixture of bleach or color and tying your hair up too frequently.

A. Hair color choice is most natural when it matches with your skin tone, and the color of your iris (eye color).

Q. How do I know I’m using the right hairstylist?

A. You are with the right hairstylist when he/she is truly looking to please you, as the client. They should listen to what you ask for, as well as suggest new styles & products. Your stylist should also educate you in the service they are rendering. A hairstylist should not leave their client unattended; on the cell phone, taking to others or playing on their phone. And most importantly, they should NOT be reckless with your hair.

Q. How do I know when it’s time for a new hairstyle?

A. That’s an easy question - when you have not gotten a compliment on your previous hairstyle for quite a while. It also may be time to try a new look when you find yourself looking at other peoples’ hairstyles, or spend time looking at hairstyling images (hello, Pinterest!) Lastly, when you find yourself looking at another hairstylist’s works (that can also mean that you are ready to change your hairstylist too!)
