A
fraid, hurt and, as it would turn out, unable to see, four-year-old Carter was wandering in the middle of the road while the Phoenix Police Department guided traffic in an effort to keep cars away from him. Immediately, a member of the Arizona Humane Society’s Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ team, the first of its kind, responded to the call. Upon their arrival, it was found that Carter had a severe eye issue the responding pet paramedic had “never seen anything like before,” with pink tissue covering the cornea and what was thought to be a progressive form of glaucoma, as well as multiple injuries and ticks covering his body. Once examined at AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™, Carter was rushed into surgery where both of Carter’s eyes, which were found to be beyond repair, were removed. Although newly blind, there was no stopping the courageous spirit and tenacity of this sweet boy
who can now be the happy, loving dog he was always meant to be with his forever family in Phoenix. Carter is just one of more than 13,000 animals saved by AHS in 2017 through adoption, rescue and the reunion of lost pets with their owner.
Built on a foundation of compassion, the Arizona Humane Society rescues, heals, adopts and advocates for sick, injured and abused animals just like Carter. AHS’ commitment to end animal suffering, homelessness and needless euthanasia has blazed a trail in the animal welfare community. This commitment led to 60,000 additional lives being saved in four short years thanks to lifesaving medical programs, spay/neuter outreach and AHS’ Pet Resource Center devoted to keeping pets in homes. CONSTRUCTION HAS STARTED FOR REACH 11 DOG PARK ON FEBRUARY 2, STAFF FROM THE CITY OF PHOENIX, HAYDEN CONSTRUCTION, AND ARCHITECTS THOMAS & CROWLEY MET TO KICK OFF CONSTRUCTION OF THE DOG PARK AT REACH 11. Construction began mid-February and is anticipated to continue through September 2018. The park will be accessible from a new entrance drive connected to the west side of the roundabout on Black Mountain Blvd. Once completed, the dog park will offer three oneacre pens, public water fountains, LED lighting, ramadas, site furnishing, shade trees, sidewalks, landscape, a parking lot, entrance drive and a security gate. The dog park is the beginning phase of the overall park’s development. Once completed,
it will serve as a new park in the City of Phoenix. The Parks and Recreation Department is currently starting the process of naming the park and will be seeking the community’s active involvement in this endeavor. With that, let your voice be heard – come out to the Farmer’s Market on High Street, March 18th, and vote online for your favorite name for this new park! That, and other yet-to-be-determined events, will allow the public to participant in this exciting development of a new park in the Desert Ridge area. The voting process for the new name will end March 31, 2018, with the name expected to be announced in April of 2018. Keep your eyes open for further announcements. The tournament will be held March 12-18, 2018 at Wildfire Golf Club at JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. The Bank of Hope Founders Cup
strives to grow the golf community by hosting family events prior to the tournament to cultivate the next generation of golfers. Family events include: • Saturday, March 3 - Family movie night, Disney’s Descendants 2 presented by LPGA and hosted

Here are some excellent museums that educate and stimulate learning, while also being interesting and highly entertaining for kids and grownups alike.
ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER The Arizona Science Center is, in a word, amazing! We visited the center for the first time recently and were blown away by the fun, larger than life, interactive displays throughout the building. You can easily spend days here, experimenting with handson science experiments ranging from biology to physics and astronomy to engineering. This venue is a fantastic way to get kids excited about science in their everyday lives and a fun way to spend time with your family.
BUTTERFLY WONDERLAND Butterfly Wonderland is America’s largest butterfly conservatory and is a great experience for the whole family. You begin the journey with a 3D movie about the migration cycle of the Monarch butterfly. Next, you can see live chrysalis in the “Emergence Room,” then experience walking through a world of beautiful butterflies in the giant Butterfly Pavilion. They are also home to other desert insects and animals, host birthday parties and provide special activities throughout the year. It’s a must see! ODYSEA AQUARIUM The state of the art OdySea Aquarium is celebrating its one year anniversary this month. The largest aquarium in the southwest, it boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures. Separate tours and encounters are available for an additional adventure, including a Behind the Scenes tour, an underwater SeaTrek, and a special Penguin Interaction Program. It’s best to buy your tickets online in advance, to get discounts and avoid waiting in long lines. OdySea is worth the visit and a great place to escape the heat of summer.

The MIM displays more than 6,500 instruments, allowing visitors to see and hear music and instruments from around the globe. The museum also provides visitors a hands-on experience of playing different instruments. DEER VALLEY PETROGLYPH PRESERVE The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, formerly known as the Deer Valley Rock Art Center, is a fascinating glimpse into the world of archeology. The preserve is an archaeology museum located on 47-acres of Sonoran Desert, right off the Agua Fria freeway in Glendale. It is home to the largest concentration of Native American petroglyphs in the Phoenix area and hosts a museum, as well as a short hike along the side of the Hedgpeth Hills to see the petroglyphs. This is a great spot to visit and learn about archeology and the history of Arizona and the Phoenix area. These are just a few of the fun and adventurous educational activities you and your kids can enjoy in the Phoenix area. aricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson and staff from Maricopa County Education Services Agency (MCESA) were joined by local high school students for a birthday party celebrating Arizona’s statehood with a special gift from Amazon – thousands of dollars worth of electronics donated to STEM-related programs throughout the county’s public schools. Among the donated items were: • More than 100 high-end laptops, computers, smart watches and tablets • More than 70 virtual reality glasses • Dozens of cameras, camcorders, music players and microphones • Hundreds of remote control toys and drones

D
esert Foothills Youth Theater’s Summer Camps have been serving the North Phoenix and North Scottsdale area for over 7 years. We offer a wide variety of classes, camps, workshops, and intensives for theater kids: performers and techies alike! Our mission is one of inclusion. Desert Foothills Theater knows every actor counts and emphasizes process with performance. Our annual summer claim to fame is our Full-Musical Production camp the last two weeks of every June. This super-fun-super-packed-supercamp offers ‘stations’ where each kid gets a chance to learn and create within every part of theater. Every kid gets a role in the play as well as rotating through building the set, creating costumes, and constructing props. Campers ages 8 – 14 act, sing, dance, and learn through experience in this hands-on camp. The production becomes a team effort where campers learn so much more than just theater. This year, we are performing the whodunit-fairytale-super-comedy-mystery “Once Upon A Crime” held at The Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center Monday – Friday June 18 – 29. If two weeks is too much or lands right in the middle of your vacation, we host one-week musical revue camps. The Musical Revue camps allow your young singer/ dancer to move, move, move! Over the duration of the week, young performers work on a cabaret style performance through a chosen theme. On Friday, they share their work with friends and family. For Summer 2018, we are offering three oneweek long camps in July. Themes to choose from this year are Rockin’50s Cabaret (July 9 – 13), On Broadway (July 16 – 20), or Dance the Night Away (July 23 – 27). These camps for 8 – 14 year old students are fun and engaging. Sign up for one or all three!
Camps provide a camp for the cutest people to perform their little hearts out! This is a two-week, half-day camp for ages 5 – 7. These young performers jump for joy when we take their favorite stories and bring them to the stage. They make friends, learn basics of theater, and shine like stars! Creative Kids camp takes place Monday – Friday from 9am – 12pm. They get a chance to share and shine in a mini performance for family and friends which is sure to set the CUTE-O- METER off the charts! Register for Creative Kids: Monsters Are Friends Too! (June 5 – 19) If your ‘little’ needs a full day camp, the Creative Kids: Un-BEELievable: A Bug Story Theater and Art Camp is for you. This camp will explore the lives of bugs through pop music, theater activities, arts, crafts, and more. The morning time (9am – 12pm) is dedicated to theater while the afternoon (12pm – 3pm) is dedicated to art. Choose the morning, afternoon or both. hands have a hard time screwing down the cap until it clicks. As a vehicle ages it becomes more common for the light to appear. Don’t freak out but do get it checked out. If the light is on and flashing, it’s likely to be a more serious issue like a miss fire that can ruin a Catalytic Converter. When you start your car you will see the light for a moment as the instrument cluster does it’s light and system check. It should go off almost immediately if all is well. Today’s vehicles are much more reliable than ever but that does not mean they don’t develop issues. It’s impossible to simply look at a component and determine if it’s working properly. The code obtained by scanning a vehicle may or may not point directly at the problem. You could get a code for an oxygen sensor but you can’t blame the sensor if a rodent ate through a wire going to the sensor. Sometimes a Check Engine Light will come on and then go out. The fault is still recorded in the appropriate module but it usually refers to an intermittent prob-
lem that currently does not exist. A good example of this is a sensor that swings in and out of acceptable performance range. There are three types of code status. History, current and pending. History means that the problem happened in the past but is not currently occurring. Current means that the problem is happening now and Pending means that the module can see the problem coming but it has not faulted enough times to actually request the MIL on. It all appears complicated but not to someone who works with modern cars all the time. You can have your car scanned for free at many places including Auto Parts stores but you would be smart to have a ASE Professional Automobile Technician do a Diagnostic check before simply replacing parts. NAVIGATING THE THREE STAGES OF RETIREMENT
P
eople often view retirement as just one more stage of life.
But that’s not exactly the case. Retirement isn’t just one stage; it’s at least three – although all three do share something in common. “Every stage of retirement requires planning,” says Jack Teboda, president of Teboda & Associates (www.teboda.com), a financial services firm. “Otherwise, you could end up running out of money, or your health might take a turn for the worse and negatively impact your retirement savings because you hadn’t planned for it in those early years of retirement.” It’s not easy to put exact ages on each of the three stages of retirement. That likely will vary from person to person, depending on their finances, health and family situation.
But here’s what to look for in each stage:
• Stage 1: Adjusting to a new lifestyle. Many new retirees brim with excitement when retirement begins. They can golf, visit museums, play with their grandchildren, travel or catch up on their reading. Not everyone adjusts well, though. It’s not easy to flip the switch overnight after you’ve spent several decades reporting to work every day. Also, if your retirement income is largely dependent on your savings you’ll want to be careful that you don’t spend too much in those initial years. “Your adviser should be able to help you come up with a plan that will give you income for life so you don’t have to worry about running out of money,” Teboda says. • Stage 2: Staying socially con-
nected. As the years pass, many retirees move closer to their children or move into a retirement community because it makes them feel more socially connected. “Sometimes at this point, especially if they haven’t planned well, people may start to have even more worries that they will outlive their money,” Teboda says. “One way they address that is to cut back on expenses. Some people even decide to get a parttime job to bring in extra money and working becomes another way to stay connected.” • Stage 3: Realizing you may need assistance. More than 70 percent of Americans older than 65 will need some form of longterm care at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “When people map out their retirement,” Teboda says,
“they need to plan for that possibility because the cost of longterm care can be devastating to your finances.”
He says people need to consider a number of factors – taxes, longevity and market risks, among others – to improve the odds of a joyful retirement, which is one reason Teboda says his firm takes a team approach to advising, using financial professionals with different areas of expertise. For example, one team member, Amanda Jager, is an Associate Financial Adviser, and another, Kevin C. Sanders, while also an Associate Financial Adviser, is an attorney specializing in estate planning. “In each stage of retirement,” Teboda says, “it’s important to confer regularly with your adviser and to be ready to adjust your financial plans if necessary.”

The Sonoran Desert makes a perfect vacation spot during the winter and spring months and gives you the opportunity to make a quick getaway with your family while your kids are out of school. GETAWAY TO TUCSON It’s always surprising to hear how many Phoenicians have never spent time in Tucson. Just a short distance south of the Phoenix metropolitan area is a charming gem of southwestern sights to see. The hotels and resorts are
plentiful, but our advice: do your research. Tucson is much more that what you see driving down the highway – the I-10 just doesn’t do it justice. Here are our favorite spots to visit while in Tucson. You probably can’t see them all in one weekend, so it’s best to pick an area you like and try a few spots to see while you are in that part of town. Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum It’s a zoo. It’s a museum. It’s a botanic garden. It’s all of the above! This state of the art facility is a must-see if you are in Tucson – and worth planning a trip just to go there on the weekend. Old Tucson Studios Ever wonder where they made your favorite Western? It was probably here. Right down the road from the Arizona Desert Museum, more than 400 movies have been produced at Old Tucson over the years - and they’re still going strong. With live entertainment, rides, tours and plenty to see, this is a great place to visit. Saguaro National Park – East and West Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in Arizona are found in both the east and west sides of the Saguaro National Park. Idyllic vistas of the pristine Sonoran Desert, mountain ecosystems, petroglyphs and everything the desert has to offer are available in two completely different parks with the same purpose – preserving the mighty Sonoran Desert and it’s Saguaros.
Kartchner Caverns State Park Love fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas? Then you’ll love visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park. Located southeast of Tucson, you can camp, hike and of course tour the caverns. Book your cave tour tickets in advance – they book up tours very quickly. These are just a few of our favorite places to visit, but there are many more. Other must see locations while you are in Tucson include: • Pima Air and Space Museum • Sabino Canyon • Catalina State Park • Biosphere 2 TRY OUT TEMPE & SCOTTSDALE Not ready to hit the road or looking for something a bit closer to home? Look no further than Tempe, Scottsdale or downtown Phoenix. Resorts and hotels are plentiful in each of these cities and make for a great “staycation,” when you want to get away but not drive very far from home. And there are plenty of fantastic sights to see to keep you entertained. Here are some of our favorite sightseeing spots in the Valley of the Sun - the places unique to Phoenix that you must take visitors and should definitely visit yourself: Desert Botanical Garden The Desert Botanical Garden is a oneof-a-kind experience in Phoenix. Take a walk through the garden and experience the unique beauty and majesty of the Sonoran Desert in the middle of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Phoenix Zoo Located right next door to the Desert Botanic Garden, the Phoenix Zoo is a world class zoo in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. A must see for people of all ages, the zoo is a wonderful and unique Arizona treat. Heard Museum A world-class museum unlike any other, the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix is recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming and its unmatched festivals. The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, and is a must see for anyone interested in the heritage and culture of our city and state. These are just three of our favorite places to visit and take visitors to see in the Valley. ou just hung up the phone with Uncle Joe in New York and are still gloating that, while he complained of having to shovel his walk for the third time, you are enjoying shorts and tee-shirt weather and decide to sit on your patio and soak up some sun. You’ve just settled into your comfortable chaise lounge and look across your nicely landscaped yard. As you admire the freshly trimmed desert botanicals, you suddenly notice several holes around your yard. What in the world is that?! You walk over to inspect the unsightly holes and figure out you have a new uninvited neighbor. Disturbing, yes but not the end of the world. You decide to fire up the jacuzzi to take a relaxing dip and as you begin setting up the pool equipment, you notice that the wires on your heater have been chewed right through. So much for relaxation today. I think it’s time to deal with this pest. These are troubling and expensive outcomes that are likely because a rodent living in your midst. This month we will begin a three-part discussion on the rodents you are likely dealing with and ways to avoid or rid yourself of their damaging behavior.
Pocket gophers are stocky rodents 5 to 7 inches long with a short tail that has sparse fur on it. These guys have a wide head, very small eyes and ears, strongly clawed front feet which are well suited for digging. They are called pocket gophers due to their fur-
lined cheek pouches or “pockets”. These are used to transport food. Pocket gophers have pale to dark brown soft fur. You’re probably familiar with their living conditions which are plugged holes in your yard. Unlike the rats, they close their nest entrance with mud and only open it to exit or allow air into the den. When they dig their burrow, they fling dirt in a “fan shape” around the hole. There are many theories of how to get rid of pocket gophers but, in all the research I’ve done, many fail. Flooding burrows and laying bait are not the most effective way to get to these critters as they create their dens to be water proof and for food storage. We have had success with our unique “gopher gasser” that injects carbon monoxide into the burrow and quickly creates a deadly atmosphere that puts the rodent to sleep once and for all. Adding moth balls (camphor) into the burrow before closing it up also helps repel any future residents who might move into the now vacant home. I hope these tips offer you some ideas on how to keep your yard and home rodent-free. Next month we will be discussing pack rats and what you can do to deal with them. If the answer is no, it is time to consider donating the item. Don’t feel guilty! These items are going to help others in need and increase their quality of life. So, what are good items to donate? Donate things that are in great condition but are not worth the time of selling, for instance: clothes, toiletries, blankets, luggage and school supplies. WHEN TO TOSS: Congratulations, you have made it to the final step of Spring Cleaning. You are now left with the items that are not worth selling and cannot be donated, so now it is time to toss.

The plan is for Statesman (the Developer/Declarant) to build approximately 223 new luxury Condominiums on the West side in a community that will be called “THE LUXE.” These will be 4-story buildings built with steel and concrete; the same construction as the 548 central condos already in Toscana (Note: The 14 Casitas and the 115 Condominiums in Building 10 are of frame and stucco construction). THE LUXE Condominiums will range in size from 1600 -2500 square feet and each unit will have its own storage and 2 parking spaces. It will consist of 6 buildings totaling approximately 223 two and three-bedroom units with pricing anticipated to be in the $500,000 to $750,000 range. THE LUXE will feature expansive amenity areas that will be exclusive to THE LUXE owners such as a 150’ lap pool, a second larger regular pool, a clubhouse, fitness center, outdoor kitchen, courtyards and Ramada’s. The plan is to have a dog park (featuring a large dog area and a small dog area) that is dedicated for use to both THE LUXE and Toscana community. THE LUXE amenities will be for the exclusive
benefited use of THE LUXE owners and guests. All operating and maintenance costs for the “benefited use areas” will be paid for by THE LUXE owners and will have no impact on the Toscana Condominium Association (TCA). However, as part of the TCA, THE LUXE owners will have access to the Toscana amenities (now enjoyed by 677 TCA members); THE LUXE owners will assist by contributing to these ongoing costs to the TCA. These units will take several years to build but if we assumed they were open today, THE LUXE owners would be paying an HOA fee of $250-$350 per month for their exclusive benefited use amenities plus $430 for the combined TCA and Toscana Maintenance Association (TMA) HOA fees. They will begin construction with 2 of the 6 buildings; most likely beginning in the Spring of 2018. Again, the HOA fees and anticipated purchase prices are estimates at this point. B. The EAST SIDE is where Statesman is building a Luxury Apartment/ Rental community to be called THE MONTREUX, that will offer long term rentals designed to complement the MANOR VILLAGE AT DESERT RIDGE. There will be 3 buildings totaling 335 one, two, and three-bedroom suites (apartments). This complex will include 2 larger pools, a clubhouse, game room, fitness center, and courtyard/Ramada. THE MONTREUX will not be a part of either the TCA or the TMA resulting in no costs for Toscana residents. A natural property dividing line will be installed during construction. Construction has started and there is an estimated 24-month buildout for both THE MONTREUX (Apartments) and the MANOR VILLAGE LIFE CENTERS which are to be a luxury Senior Living rental community featuring Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care in one building totaling 196 suites. not given any depth outside of “creepy child in danger of the ghosts”. There is some haunting cinematography in the film, with the production design perfectly capturing the look and creepiness of the house….until we see the horrible CGI exteriors of the house.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love) new film is strange, disturbing and even funny in a few moments. The relationship between our leads, Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and Alma (Krieps), is one which sometimes feels genuine, and other times you’re amazed that these two are still together. Day-Lewis is great of course, and it’s sad that this could be his last role. But wow, Krieps steals the show, portraying a character that is both warm and devious. Beyond that, the cinematography (which was supposedly done by Anderson himself) is gorgeous, and the way it sometimes goes out of focus really makes you feel like you’re seeing through the eyes of Woodcock. The film’s costume design can also not go without mention. Every stunning piece of clothing that the characters wear matches both the scene and color palette perfectly. And despite some moments where it could be taken out, Jonny Greenwood’s score is beautiful, especially the main theme named after the film itself and its variations.

This film focuses on the strange relationship of a dressmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) and a waitress turned model (Vicky Krieps).
Inspired by true events, a doctor (Jason Clarke) investigates Sarah Winchester’s (Helen Mirren) claims of being haunted by the ghosts of those killed by her company’s rifle. The idea of a film based on the famous Winchester house is very interesting and open to several creative ideas, so it’s a shame that all Winchester has to offer is a generic haunted house film. Mirren is perfectly cast as the widowed Winchester, and Clarke is great as always, even if it does ham it up a bit more than usual. But unfortunately, that’s where the good of the film stops. Most of the scares in the film are jump scares, and while some work, they get tiring after a while. There are also entirely too many “false” scares as well. The rest of the cast also doesn’t do the film any favors, with the child character Henry

If there’s something the Maze Runner films have always been consistent in, it’s the direction and staging of set pieces that Wes Ball gives us. The action is edited smoothly, with most usage of handheld cam not feeling distracting, and the choreography is well done. Unfortunately, Ball also seems to be a director that needs to be given a better script, as most of the main actors are let down by the dialogue, and come off as bland. What’s even sadder is that the few genuinely good performances, such as Giancarlo Esposito and Walton Goggins, aren’t given as much screen time. In the film’s defense though, for having only a $62 million dollar budget, it’s effects are very good…even better than some that have 3 times that budget.
The Death Of Stalin (Limited)
In 1892, an army captain transports a dying Cheyenne chief and his family to his final resting place, where several dangers await them. Hostiles is a slow burn, one where its pacing sometimes works and other times doesn’t. But when it works, it really does work. Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi and Adam Beach are all great in their roles, and while the supporting cast may not be as good as their leading counterparts, director Scott Cooper at least tries to give them a good amount of development through scenes of their own. I also applaud Cooper for not flinching with the violence, showing the harsh realities of the old west. The fact that Masanobu Takayanagi has been overlooked in the cinematography awards race is a real shame.
