Build Back Better Is Dead, But Your Chance to Secure Energy Independence Is Not

“A
ll politics are local,” as a time-tested American saying goes. When considering climate change, the most urgent political issue of our time, we might instinctively balk at this old sawhorse. What, after all, could be less local a concern than the challenges posed by global warming? Yet a closer look reveals that regular people always have the power to effect major change if they are determined to do so, especially if they have the support of their community. All eyes were on the new administration over the past year as it tried to marshal support for its Build Back Better package of public investments—and for good reason. Among other provisions, the bill would have significantly enhanced incentives for green-energy investments, encouraging businesses and individuals to make the kinds of changes needed for the country to fulfill its carbon-reduction commitments. The plan stalled just before this past Christmas in the face of resistance from two Democratic senators. In explaining his refusal to back the bill, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin paid lip service to political ideals, but his considerable vested interest in the dying coal industry is hard to ignore. Kyrsten Sinema, one of our very own senators, remained enigmatic and noncommittal to the end, a puzzling stance toward a rare opportunity to harness her state’s most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But no matter what powerful politicians are doing (or, more to the point, not doing) on the national stage to counteract climate change, there is always something regular people can do. More than 200,000 homeowners in Arizona have already installed solar systems, which produce enough electrical output to power almost a million homes, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association, and Arizonans are only getting started. You can secure dependable, affordable energy for yourself and your family while contributing to clean-energy self-sufficiency for America. Crews Complete All Major Work on Loop 101 Widening Project New lanes, improvements finished along 13 miles of Pima Freeway Photo Courtesy of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) THE FINAL MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE LOOP 101 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE LAST SCHEDULED FULL WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR LANE-MARKING WORK, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT). ADOT’s $185 million project, which started in January 2019, has added a fourth regular (general purpose) lane in each direction along 13 miles of Loop 101. Drivers have already been experiencing improved traffic flow along the wider freeway for several months while crews focused attention on other necessary work such as
interchange enhancements, the addition of permanent, easier-to-see lane stripes, and the sealing of concrete deck joints. Other improvements added during the Loop 101 project include: • Wider bridges above cross streets, the Central Arizona Project canal and area washes. • A new Loop 101 overpass above the city of Scottsdale’s planned Miller Road extension. • New freeway lighting and signs. • Noise barriers in areas where they are warranted. • New landscaping in several areas. • On- and off-ramps at interchanges reconstructed to fit the profile of the wider freeway.
As with other freeway construction projects, crews will oversee a required landscape establishment period and take care of any other minor work. Drivers are asked to continue to stay alert for workers or equipment in the area.
The Loop 101 Improvement Project has been funded as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
Phoenix City Council Approves Water Conservation Plan Information and Photo Courtesy of the City of Phoenix RECENTLY, THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO ALLOW THE CITY TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE CENTRAL ARIZONA WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT IN RESPONSE TO CONTINUING DECLINES IN WATER SUPPLIES IN LAKE MEAD ON THE COLORADO RIVER.
The agreement, known as the 500+ Plan, involves the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and stakeholders in Arizona, California, and Nevada. The goal is to add 500,000 acrefeet of additional water to Lake Mead each year through 2026. The plan is projected to add approximately 16 feet of water to the reservoir, which continues to reach record low levels. Those targets will require agreement participants to do without certain amounts of their Colorado River allotments. In exchange for a reduction in water delivery, the parties will receive financial compensation. “The City of Phoenix recognizes the seriousness of a declining Colorado River, and this action is representative of the collaborative regional efforts that are necessary to address the challenge of water scarcity and drought,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a desert community that prioritizes sustainable growth, and the funds saved through this

plan will contribute to identifying, innovating and piloting solutions to increase water use efficiency and promote conservation.” Phoenix will receive compensation in the amount of $4,163,765.97 for a contribution in 2022 of 15,977 acrefeet. The money will come from Central Arizona Water Conservation District and will be used to implement water conservation programs. The city will consider additional contributions in subsequent years on a caseby-case basis. “This short-term action is important because it represents quick thinking and collaboration among water users in the Southwest,” says Phoenix District 1 Councilwoman Ann O’Brien, who also is a member of the Board of Directors for Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA). “Ultimately, the answer is a long-term adaptation to a hotter, drier future, which must include more efficient use of water.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Greystar Breaks Ground on New Multifamily Housing Development at City North RENTAL HOUSING INDUSTRY LEADER, GREYSTAR, RECENTLY BROKE GROUND ON THE FIRST PHASE OF THEIR MULTIFAMILY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT CITY NORTH. This marks City North’s first vertical element in the 100-acre project located just north of Loop 101 at the intersection of 55th Street and City North Drive. The 272-unit multifamily project is within the City North masterplan which, upon completion, will also include an additional 3,000 residential units, 1.8 million square feet of class-A corporate office space, 620 hotel rooms, and up to 100,000 square feet of retail offerings and new restaurant concepts. The first phase of multifamily will be built, owned, and managed by Greystar and is expected to open in the summer of 2023. “We are excited to team up with Crown Realty to include residential offerings at City North,” says Greystar’s Senior Director of Development, Billy Cundiff. “This $93 million project is a perfect
example of how Greystar and Crown are working together to help bring worldclass residential development to the area and stimulate the economy by creating new jobs. We look forward to continuing to help Phoenix grow as a cultural, luxury, and business destination, specifically in the North Phoenix area.” Shopping centers High Street and Desert Ridge Marketplace are located adjacent to Greystar’s multifamily project. “The City North neighborhood is the ultimate live, work and play environment,” says Crown Realty’s Senior Vice President of Acquisition and Development, Rick Carpinelli. “With over 50 walkable restaurants and venues, all accessible via our communities and placed strategically near existing amenities, twelve feet walkways will allow residents to walk to work and to hotels where family and friends can stay. In addition, bike paths and rest areas will be strategically placed throughout the development, making
City North the ideal neighborhood in the North Valley.” The first phase of City North’s multifamily housing development will offer exceptional design, market-leading finishes and amenities, and excellent views of the surrounding area from its 272 residences. Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show Still Reins Largest in World
THIS MONTH, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF HORSE LOVERS WILL COME TO SCOTTSDALE TO SEE THE OLDEST BREED OF HORSES IN COMPETITION SHOWING OFF THEIR VERSATILITY, AGILITY, AND SPORTSMANSHIP. The 67th annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, hosted by the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona (AHAA), will showcase over 2,200 Arabian horses at Scottsdale’s WestWorld from February 17-27.

Arizona Gives Day Registration Deadline Nears for Local Nonprofits
Arizona Gives Day raised a record $7.1 million for nonprofits in 2021

ebruary 28 is the registration deadline for local nonprofits interested in participating in Arizona Gives Day, the 24-hour online fundraising event, from noon on April 5 until noon on April 6. Since 2013, Arizona Gives has raised more than $30 million for nonprofits statewide, setting a single-year record in 2021 by raising $7.1 million.
Presented by FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good,” Arizona Gives is hosted by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum. Re-enrollment and payment of a refundable registration fee is required and can be completed at azgives.org/ eligibility. Registrants receive access to workshops and training, marketing and graphics toolkit, and can fundraise all year on AZGives.org.

Arizona Gives unites nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. Arizona Gives helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits
play in our communities and inspires people to give generously to create a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit, an IRS Determination Letter, the most current completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s operating budget, and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations. Arizona Gives provides virtual workshops to assist in making each participant’s fundraising experience a success. Workshops take place through March. Registrants can participate in real time or view the recording later. “Arizona Gives offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for yearround giving and for donors to create personal fundraiser campaigns,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. New 2022 campaign features for nonprofits include: • New ways for nonprofits to direct traffic to their Arizona Gives Day profiles including options for an embeddable donation button and QR code. • Ability to send thank-you emails directly from the Arizona Gives Day platform. • An option for the peer fundraiser page “hero image” to be either static or as a video. • Ability for nonprofits to link to their Vimeo videos in addition to YouTube. • A new Repeat Your Donation feature which enables donors to review previous donations and then make that specific donation again or add to it with a click of a button. For interested donors, AzGives.org offers an advanced search filter to find nonprofits by specific criteria, area of focus, and which donations may qualify as an Arizona tax credit. he community is invited to An Evening of Hope on Saturday, February 19 to benefit local nonprofit Heidi’s Village. An Evening of Hope is the nonprofit’s inaugural
fundraising event and takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 19 at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, located at 5350 E. Marriott Drive.
Heidi’s Village, located at 600 N. 40th Street in Phoenix, is the one-stopshop of services for the animal welfare community in the Greater Phoenix area, according to the nonprofit. Through collaboration with over 30 rescue partners, their services impact animal welfare efforts throughout Phoenix. Heidi’s Village works with their rescue partners to provide: • Low-cost boarding to rescues, many that are foster-based, to expand their capacity to say “yes!” to pets in need. • Temporary care and assistance based veterinary care in partnership with 501(c)3 organizations to help pet parents keep their pets. • A 24/7 neonatal nursery for the youngest animals that need round-theclock care. • Access to a behavior modification team to help all housed pets become happy, healthy, and adoptable. • Affordable veterinary care for routine, non-routine, and emergency needs. “Heidi’s Village provides boarding, grooming and veterinary services to other animal welfare organizations in Arizona, as well as a neonate kitten clinic to help the most vulnerable kittens survive and thrive,” according to the nonprofit. “Our

adoption, foster and financial assistance programs help unite families and their pets – and keep them together.” In 2021, Heidi’s Village provided services to 1,147 animals in need, and placed 1,018 dogs and cats into forever homes. An Evening of Hope raises vital funds to help Heidi’s Village continue their work. Through the generous support of the community, Heidi’s Village strives to “foster a community where animals are treated with respect, dignity and compassion,” according to the organization. Tickets to An Evening of Hope are $175 per person for in-person attendance or $75 to receive a video recap of the event, including the keynote speaker presentation, sent out the week following the event. The event includes a cocktail reception and silent and live auctions, followed by dinner, a presentation and entertainment. ar, motorcycle and military vehicle enthusiasts, get revved up for the eighth annual Gila River Hotels & Casinos Concours in the Hills on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fountain Park (located at 12925 N. Saguaro Boulevard in Fountain Hills). The free, family-friendly event benefits Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Concours in the Hills creator Peter Volny built a thriving advertising business around promoting the automobile industry. Migrating to Arizona, a “mecca” for car collectors, he turned his passion for speed and exotic cars into the premier auto show that draws car enthusiasts from across the Southwest. A childhood cancer survivor, Volny donates all proceeds from the event to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “2022 is shaping up to be an incred-
ibly exciting year as the details fall into place for Concourse in the Hills,” Volny says. “This year, for the first time ever, we’ve added alternate fuel vehicles to the mix. This is the fourth year the event is benefiting Phoenix Children’s and we are continuing to push the fundraising goal for the hospital. Since 2018, the event has raised over $500,000 and we have set a new goal to raise $1 million over the next few years.” Concours in the Hills will expand its race car display and will have noteworthy winning cars representing various types of racing. Other vehicles will be arranged by brand to encourage friendship among owners. They are grouped in Domestic, European, and Asian Sections. Several military helicopters will also be on display in the military vehicle section. Continuing tradition, the show will be opened by well-known race drivers from F1, Indy and Sports Car Racing.
The free event started in 2014 with 220 cars and 3,000 spectators, and in 2020, featured 1,052 cars, 118 sponsor booths and more than 30,000 spectators, smashing all previous records. Event admission and parking is free to

s we begin 2022, we’re seeing much the same market trends that we saw in 2021. Supply and demand continues to be our dominant theme. We are seeing more homes get listed for sale and we expect a mini surge after the Super Bowl and Phoenix Open, but it is not predicted to significantly impact the shortage. What does this mean for sellers? This means that we will continue to see well priced homes sell quickly and multiple offers. What does this mean for buyers? Buyers will need to continue to act quickly and be aggressive in their offers.

As for inventory, in Phoenix in mid-January 2021 there were 1,095 homes available for sale and in mid-January 2022 there were 777. In Scottsdale there were 569 homes in mid-January 2021 and 344 in mid-January 2022. If you are considering selling, this remains a great time to sell. If you’re considering buying, then you need to be prepared. You’ll want to ensure you have all your pre-qualification ‘ducks’ in order and understand what special terms and conditions you can offer to help make it a winner in a multiple offer situation. Interest rates are starting to increase, but they remain extremely attractive. So, our prediction that interest rates would increase is already happening and that will impact the rate at which home prices escalate. While we see prices continuing to rise, they are rising at a very minimal and modest rate. Last year prices rose around 32%. Phoenix was ranked as a top relocation destination last year and we’ve already had a surge in population. This year we also expect to see an increase in vacation snowbird activity. We’re already seeing our Canadian homeowners start to return, and we expect to see more buyers hit the market as people visit for the Phoenix Open, Spring Training and simply our fabulous spring weather.

PVSCHOOLS GOVERNING BOARD PRESIDENT SELECTED FOR 2022 Recently, the PVSchools Governing Board voted to elect Susan Matura as president for 2022. Matura, who has served as a board member since 2019, will be taking over for outgoing president Anne Greenberg. This is her first time serving as president of the PVSchools Governing Board. She and her husband have lived in Arizona for more than 20 years and have three children, one of which is a current student in PVSchools. Matura is actively involved in her children’s schools, serving on the PTO Board for eight years, two as president. She is also a member of United Parent Council (UPC) and served one year as a UPC Executive Officer. Additionally, she has served on several district committees and on a school’s site council. Her term runs through December 2022.

A North Phoenix mom’s Etsy shop takes off By Sondra Barr
W
ith her daughter as her tester, North Phoenix resident Megan Gladney creates unique personalized children’s gifts and decor.
From personalized crayons, barrettes, pom pom garlands, and DIY paint kits, Megan sells these handmade items through her Etsy shop Carefree Highway Market (@ CarefreeHighwayMKT). The idea was formed from the mother and daughter frequently creating crafts together. Her number one seller? Unicorn crayons. “Our 5-year-old, Gemma, decided on the idea and of course they became the number one seller,” says Megan, a Tramonto resident. Megan’s hand-crafted items have developed quite the following and even attracted the attention of celebrities, including Chrissy Teigen. “She happened to be in town for a few days and reached out to me. I dropped all my orders and went to work to match the pastel theme Luna [Chrissy’s daughter] had for her fifth birthday party. A friend luckily told me to make crayons for Chrissy’s son, Miles…and they appeared in his cute little hands on Instagram.” The best part of crafting unique items for kids? “My products are colorful and fun during an uncertain time for so many,” Megan says. “They bring joy to children and adults alike.”

Valentine’s Day is a reminder that affection and unconditional love can make children emotionally happier and boost their confidence. Sure, it’s a time to celebrate the love you share with your significant other, but it’s also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of loving — and being loved — within the family. Here are seven ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. AFFIRMATION HEARTS Leave a heart on your child’s door each day of February until Valentine’s Day with something you love about them. Be specific in your compliments to make them feel extra special. Address their inner beauty: what makes them a good kid, sibling, son, daughter, student, etc. This is so easily done, nearly free and incredibly rewarding.
PLAN SOME QUALITY TIME Especially true for parents with multiple kids, individual time with each child can be hard to come by. Plan a date with each of your kids separately—truth be told, time is the greatest gift we could give someone. Honor their interests; for example, if one of your children loves art, take a parent-and-child painting class. If another child loves sports, allot time to picnic in the park and play catch. It doesn’t need to be over the top. REVERSE THE ROLES Let the kids play parents for the night. Allow them to cook you and your significant other dinner and dessert— you’ll be surprised how much they’ll enjoy role-playing waiter and waitress. Suggest they make you Valentine’s Day cards and decorate the dinner table with heart-infused drawings. Date night at home courtesy of the kids—score! DELIVER VALENTINES Chances are your kids will be making Valentines for all their classmates, but you can take this a step further by making Valentines for friends and family. In fact, you can also show the community some love by delivering cookies to your local fire station or police department. Practicing appreciation is a good lesson of love to teach your kids.
CONSIDER THE SIMPLE THINGS Sure, there are so many cliches when it comes to V-Day, but sometimes the most important Valentine’s Day message isn’t in the form of something monetary. As parents, all we want is to make sure our kids feel safe, secure, and loved, but how can we do that aside from telling them we love them? Simple ideas include showing physical affection, reading together, and showing enthusiasm in what they’re talking about, what they’re doing, etc. Let them dream, listen to their dreams, and encourage them to work toward pursuing them. Show your family some love this Valentine’s Day and every day.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Kids learn most from their parents and caregivers, so for them to learn love, they must be shown love. If you’re in a romantic relationship, show them photos and talk about it. If you’re not, point to friendships and other relationships and talk about the

eet James and Marge Duvall. They recently celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. Their story is one of love, devotion, hard work, and dedication. James and Marge grew up a small town in Northern Kansas with a population of 300. They met in grade school; James was in the third grade and Marge was in the fourth. They started dating in high school and got engaged at 17. James was being shipped overseas to Okinawa so they decided to get married in the short leave he had before heading off. Once married, Marge stayed with her family back in Kansas. After he returned, life took them in many parts of the country; first in Nebraska, then off to Oregon, and finally Arizona. James worked as an engineer and Marge earned her degree from NAU at 41 and taught school for 22 years until retirement. James retired from the State of Arizona working as an engineer. One of the funny stories they shared in their travels was running out of money when the were moving to Oregon so they stayed in Idaho for a week and worked for a potato farmer picking up potatoes that had fallen off the truck.
They agree that they “definitely earned their money” that week and Marge says that her back never hurt so much. The Duvalls have three kids (Denise, Kim and James), three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Denise lives in Phoenix, Kim lives in Oregon, and James (Jim) lives in Flagstaff. James and Marge say the key to their happiness and longevity is a few points. “My buddies would want me to go have a beer after work, and I said, ‘I can go home and have a beer with my wife,’” James recalls. “We both got our pilots license together, we hunted and fished together, rode motorcycles, we tried it all, even went shooting together, and Marge is a better shot than me.” The other key to their success in marriage was financial. They never bought things without having the money for it. The saved for all their purchases and James even worked on planes to be able to buy three of them for them to fly. Investing also helped them; they would use money earned to make property investments that then turned into profit along the way. Now both residents at The Retreat at Alameda, they share that they are grateful for their wonderful life together and have no regrets.

The director does a good job showing us their lives, day by day as they continue to destroy themselves and each other, convinced some salvation still awaits them. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and tragic all at once—the best kind of film.

By the end, it leaves you feeling, if not empty, unfulfilled, and sad watching all that talent wasted.

ON APPLE TV+ “Nightmare Alley” A con man’s rise and fall, told in two acts from the circus to the highest part of society as he schemes his way with his fake psychic powers. Guillermo del Toro has always made films that can best be described as dark fairy tales, with their heightened sense of reality and unique designs and visuals. With his new film, he changes it up, slamming the film into harsh, wet reality, with only his heightened production design remaining. Nightmare Alley is a cold, bleak movie with little hope or light to be found as we watch our characters kill, cheat, and abandon each other for their gain. The actors perfectly reach their different levels of habitability, watching them slowly get further into the underbelly of the world they live in. Slow is a good word to describe this movie, one that wants you to experience every second of its ugly reality. It’s a watch that requires you to be patient, but if you stick with it, it rewards you well. “Red Rocket” A down-and-out actor’s journey to success as he moves back to his hometown. The events in “Red Rocket” are like a very humorous accident, one you can’t look away from as it gets worse and worse. Simon Rex’s performance as Mikey Saber is one of the best “scumbag” lead characters I’ve seen in recent years, a character that completely lacks selfawareness and is filled with delusions of grandeur. The supporting cast is filled with other colorful characters played by all sorts of discoveries by Sean Baker. myhyperlocalnews.com
February 4 • “Moonfall” “Scream” Twenty-five years after the original murders, a new killer arrives, forcing the original survivors to unite with a new generation to stop them. I’m likely biased in this case as, outside of the fourth film, I’ve never really cared for “Scream” and only saw this new film due to the involvement of the filmmakers behind 2019’s excellent horror-comedy “Ready Or Not.” With this new installment, you get a meta take on legacy sequels and their family relations in typical “Scream” fashion (even despite the new directors and writers). As per usual with these movies (beyond the surprisingly clever fourth film from 2011), it’s obnoxious, to say the least and doesn’t have anything of intrigue to bring up. The directors do bring some good set pieces with the
• “Jackass Forever” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” A retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic play. As an exercise in visuals, Joel Coen’s solo debut as a director works. The minimalist production design is a sight to behold and, mixed with the black and white photography, it reminds one of classic German expressionism. Beyond that, if you’ve seen a prior version of Macbeth you’ve basically seen this one, as there’s little that this version offers to differ from prior versions. The most is the bigger stars than other film adaptations, and unfortunately, the main two leads, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, are miscast and don’t fit the devious nature of the characters. The other actors fare better, but the filmmaking and performances feel
