City News The Nemesis Club Opens and Welcomes Locals to Have an Immersive Adventure By Ethan Kispert WITH THE GOAL OF PROVIDING A SAFE AND WELCOMING SPACE FOR EVERYONE, THE NEMESIS CLUB SERVES AS AN UNDERGROUND AREA WHERE FRIENDS CAN GET TOGETHER AND ROLEPLAY AS THEIR FAVORITE SUPERHEROES AND VILLAINS. What makes this place really exciting is how you enter. Soda Jerk Co., located at High Street, is its own milkshake bar while also being the location of a secret entrance to the club. When walking up, mention a “secret code” to an employee up front and you’ll be guided to the back where everything goes down. A hidden door connected to a dimly lit hallway takes you to the main area where everyone gathers. The idea behind The Nemesis Club is to have a place where friends can gather together and harness their competitive nature while competing in user-created challenges. The aspect of unpredictability

is really what makes The Nemesis Club so unique and helps facilitate a lot of what goes on during the day. On any given day, groups are presented with a range of different settings, puzzles, soundtracks, special effects, and pretty much whatever else they can think of to help make the experience more surreal. Once everyone groups up and gets organized, one hour is given to all the members to, in a sense, “prove” their worth to the group by doing things such as foiling evil plots or pulling off what are known as “capers.” While all of this is unfolding, there’s a sidekick, or henchman, who will remotely monitor what’s going on and also provide

tips to help increase the players’ odds of winning. The club features two to three different game types with a capacity of eight to ten players per game. This structure is great during the pandemic because each of the games are private, eliminating the risk of exposure from playing with strangers. Soda Jerk Co. is connected to The Nemesis Club for a reason. When the activities are wrapped up and the victor emerges, the group then enjoys what they call a “Killer Milkshake.”

VALLEY NONPROFIT CONTROL ALT DELETE, LLC IS WORKING TO MAKE SURE THAT VICTIMS CAN SAFELY FIND A WAY OUT. “Control Alt Delete helps people escape domestic violence by removing the barriers that keep them in unsafe situations,” says its president and founder Laura Pahules. “Ninety nine percent of all abuse survivors are financially abused and may be ready to leave but do not have the funds for something as little as gas for their car.” In 2019, Arizona domestic violence programs served 1,539 people in a single day and there were 96 domestic violence related deaths throughout the year according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Control Alt Delete was founded the same year, and since then, they have facilitated more than 1,800 escapes from domestic violence situations, which have included more than 3,800 children and 1,200 pets. “What we know about domestic violence survivors is that they will have a higher likelihood of not returning to the abuser if they have a support system,” Pahules says. “Many of the escapes we help with have friends or family that can help but the survivor has no way to get to them; Control Alt Delete bridges that gap by providing fuel and transportation.” Not only does the organization provide financial support

“The average cost of a Control Alt Delete escape is $12.28 per person,” she says. “$12.28 to save a life.” Control Alt Delete is a volunteer-run organization with no overhead cost and no state or federal funding. According to Pahules, 100 percent of every donation made to the organization goes directly toward helping people escape domestic violence. She adds that the easiest way to support the organization and help with domestic violence awareness is to like, follow and share posts across social media platforms.

City News Pita Jungle Takes Its Mediterranean Menu to the Streets in its New Food Truck STARTING THIS MONTH, PITA JUNGLE IS HITTING THE STREETS WITH THE ROLL OUT OF ITS NEW FOOD TRUCK. The 20-foot mobile restaurant features a full custom-built kitchen that will enable Pita Jungle to serve culinary excerpts from its menu throughout the metropolitan area, outside of its 22 Phoenix-area locations. The menu includes a selection of starters, salads, pitas, sandwiches, bowls, and desserts. The food truck will serve a few new items created just for the on-the-

go experience and offer special meal combos such as a sandwich and a salad for a set price. “We are excited to announce the release of our first restaurant on wheels: The Pita Jungle Food Truck,” says Co-Founder Bassel Osmani. “With the hope to eventually deploy a fleet of healthy Mediterranean food trucks, our first launches this month making it easier than ever to eat healthy.”

arents with school-age children are filling in as teacher more often these days due to COVID-19 and distance learning. Why not add a few lessons on money fundamentals while you have a captive audience? Here are five simple lessons on “dollars and sense” that can help kids develop a financial foundation. LESSON #1: Money isn’t free. Children may have limited understanding of where money comes from. They may not realize there are limits to the amount of money that is available for things they want. Tell them that money is a byproduct of work, and that there are limits to its supply. LESSON #2: Don’t spend what you don’t have. It will probably come as a surprise to kids to learn that when money is borrowed in the grownup world, the borrower has to repay more than they borrowed! You can also point out that if everything in their piggy bank is gone, they won’t have money left for other things they may want or need at a later date. Talk with older children about the risks of overspending and credit history. A poor credit history due to youthful money mismanagement can harm their ability to get a car or home loan down the road. Bad credit can even affect employment. LESSON #3: Spend thoughtfully. Help your kids learn to be deliberate with their dollars. They can practice smart spending by answering these three questions about hypothetical purchases: • Can I afford it? • Is it worth it? • Will I regret it?

LESSON #4: Get in the habit of saving. Show how much easier it is to save when its done regularly, even in small amounts, and that savings can help meet larger goals. This can be demonstrated with simple visual addition problems on paper. Don’t forget to mention the other crucial role of savings for adults —as protection when work is interrupted or an unexpected expense occurs. Older students earn extra credit with a lesson on compound interest. LESSON #5: Money deserves respect. Teach your kids to handle their money with care. That means not stuffing dollars into pockets or leaving change at the bottom of a backpack. Currency kept neatly folded in a wallet or change purse shows respect for the value it represents. The same applies to debit and credit cards, which are as good as money. They too should be guarded, especially to prevent them from being lost or stolen. Follow your own advice and be a good example. “I started when my wife was in bad shape,” he says. Wood was the caregiver for his Alzheimer’s-afflicted wife, Linda, with whom he shared “a love affair since day one.” While participating in a caregiver support group offered by Duet: Partners In Health & Aging, he was introduced to the book, “Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope While Coping with Stress and Grief,” by Dr. Pauline Boss. “Dr. Boss was a lifesaver,” says Wood. “Her book spoke to me at a time when I needed it. The rigors of caregiving can either break you or make you. She says reinventing yourself is the key to surviving.” In response to her encouragement to “broaden your identity and do what makes you happy,” Wood began taking art courses. He began to bring his paintings to the support group for “show and tell.” Fellow caregivers bought some of his work and commissioned pieces. That launched a new pursuit. His work has been selected for exhibitions, including one with the Mayo Clinic Loaned Artwork Program.

Thanks to Duet, where he discovered Dr. Boss, Wood says he has a new lease on life—a purpose. “My art, friends, family, faith and outside interests, including Duet, make me feel younger than my years. Dr. Boss will discuss “Caregiving in the Midst of Pandemic Uncertainty.” Drawing from her most recent book, “The Myth of Closure: Ambiguous Loss in a Time of Pandemic” (W. W. Norton, 2021), she will discuss how new ambiguous losses have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and how family caregivers can cope and stay resilient. Co-presenter, Dr. Arthur Kleinman, M.D., will discuss “The Soul of Care: Addressing the Crisis in Caregiving.” Drawing from his most recent book, “The Soul of Care: The Moral Education of a Husband and a Doctor,” he will share his reflections about caring for his wife, and how the experience transformed his thinking about our medical system and the need to put those who give care at its center. KJZZ reporter, Kathy Ritchie, will moderate the event, which is sponsored by AARP Phoenix. Participants will have an opportunity to submit questions during the presentation. City News Phoenix Water Debuts New Activity Book with Stormwater Hopper PHOENIX WATER’S MASCOT, HOPPER, IS A FRIENDLY DESERT TOAD THAT REPRESENTS STORMWATER EDUCATION. In Hopper’s newly released activity book, “Hopper’s Stormwater Adventure,” students go on a journey to discover what happens to rainwater that flows into the storm drain. One of Hopper’s most important messages is that stormwater runoff flows untreated into washes, rivers, canals and retention or detention basins and it’s the community’s duty to protect the water. The activity and coloring pages throughout the tenpage book teach students how to protect stormwater and prevent pollution in the storm drain. Hopper

takes students through a maze to learn where stormwater goes on page three. On page six, students fill in the blank using a secret code teaching them how to protect stormwater. Students test their knowledge on pages seven and eight by selecting which Hopper is preventing stormwater pollution. By the end, students will know that only rain belongs in the storm drain. The activity book is available for download on Phoenix Water’s digital education page, Water Education from the Cloud. In addition to Hopper’s activity book, the water education page offers water conservation resources for all ages including activity books for Phoenix Water mascots Wayne Drop and Loo Poo, games, learning videos for kids and adults, and lesson plans for the educators to use at home. THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A 6-MONTH PILOT PROGRAM THAT WILL ALLOW PHOENIX SOLID WASTE CUSTOMERS TO SCHEDULE A HOME PICKUP OF THEIR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) MATERIALS. The HHW Home Pickup Pilot Program will be managed by the Phoenix Public Works Department in partnership with Kary Environmental Services, a local company that offers professional collection and handling of hazardous waste materials. Public Works is responsible for the proper collection, diversion and disposal of trash and recyclable materials from more than 400,000 Phoenix residential customers. “The HHW Home Pickup Pilot Program is another example of the ways the city of Phoenix is adapting to the realities of COVID-19 while still providing crucial services. This home pickup program makes it easy for residents to properly dispose of hazardous materials, including things like batteries and paint,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “We expect this effort will result in up to 700 tons of waste diverted from landfills annually. I’m proud that Phoenix can provide this common sense service at no additional cost to residents.” To participate in the program and schedule a pickup, solid waste residential customers who wish to dispose of HHW materials—such as paints, aerosols, batteries, electronics and chemicals—need to remember three simple steps: 1. Check acceptable HHW materials list by visiting phoenix.gov/publicworks/ HHW. The list is extensive and details the maximum quantities for accepted chemicals, paints and some electronics, per scheduled collection.

2. Schedule a home pick-up online at phoenix.gov/publicworks/HHW or by calling 602-262-6251. Residents may schedule a pickup during the last two weeks of every other month. Actual

collection of the materials will take place the following month. 3. Place properly contained, sealed and labeled HHW materials at a visible and accessible area next to your garage or front door on the scheduled pickup date. This is important for safety purposes. Do not place HHW materials at the curb or on the sidewalk. “During these difficult times, it’s important for the City of Phoenix to provide vital services to our residents in a safe, physically distanced way,” says Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure and Innovation subcommittee. “By implementing home pickups for household hazardous waste materials, the Public Works department is meeting this need, while also ensuring proper disposal of chemicals and toxic wastes that could harm families and the environment.” There is no additional cost to request a home pickup for solid waste residential customers. The program is already included as part of the solid waste monthly rate. For the 6-month duration of the pilot program, each solid waste customer/household is entitled to one free HHW pick-up. Additionally, the current HHW Alternative Drop-off program, implemented in April 2020, will remain available at no cost to Phoenix solid waste customers. The World’s Largest Girl-Led Entrepreneurial Program Takes Place All Month Long By Autumn Jarrett FOR SIX WEEKS EACH YEAR, GIRL SCOUTS IN ARIZONA PARTICIPATE IN THE WORLD'S LARGEST GIRL-LED ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM: THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM. This year, the cookie season for the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) began Jan. 18 and continues until Feb. 28. As in years past, 100% of all GSACPC Cookie proceeds stay local to benefit Girl Scouting in Arizona. “Given COVID-19, GSACPC has developed new and different scenarios and ways for girls to sell cookies safely,” says Tamara Woodbury, CEO of GSACPC. “We are extremely proud to be able to offer our girls both a sense of normalcy in a near-year that has been anything but normal, and a means to help girls grow their entrepreneurial, public speaking, financial and other skills through this modified take on our cookie program.” DIGITAL COOKIE APP OPENS EARLY Through this digital selling platform, girls build a custom website, and then they invite friends and family they

know to purchase cookies via email marketing, with the option of having cookies delivered via contactless pickup and drop-off or shipped directly to their home. Girls can also use the Digital Cookie Mobile App to accept credit card payment from customers on-the-go. “Digital Cookie introduces lessons about online marketing, application use, and eCommerce to Girl Scouts, through building their cookie website and managing their virtual sales,” says Woodbury. DRIVE-THRU BOOTHS Beyond the Digital Cookie offering, local Girl Scout troops will also be coordinating drive-thru booths, with cashless transactions being strongly requested. The drive-thru booths will be in parking lots that allow for plenty of distancing and space for the girls and their parents. Cars will have the chance to pull to the front of the line, make their orders (masks required to make an order), and have the contactless or near contactless ability to pick up their cookies as they would from a traditional booth. There will be parents stationed at each of these booths with sanitizing products to help

the girls ensure maximum safety and monitor cookie transfer to cars. “The girls will not only be selling at these locations but helping market them via signage and other promotions, enabling the girls to flex their creative and communication muscles in a new way,” says Woodbury. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is more than a sale. It provides girls the skills they need to become successful women. Girl Scouts learn to invest in themselves, their troops, and their community. Encouraging girls’ interest in entrepreneurship prepares them for any future career pathway. The qualities that lead to successful entrepreneurship, like curiosity, confidence, and innovation, are essential for all types of academic and career success. And while girls learn five key skills in the program, this year they’re learning a sixth skill: managing uncertainty. n Valentine’s Day, Arizona will celebrate its 109th birthday. It took 49 years for Arizona to become a state from the time it was first declared a territory, but the 48th state finally was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1912. One of the many things we love about the great state of Arizona is it’s wild and wooly past. The tales told about the special places in this state make learning about the history of the Wild West a rootin’ tootin’ hoedown! Arizona had its share of controversy and mayhem on the journey toward statehood, but our history pre-dates the beginnings of the United States. Oraibi, a village on the Hopi reservation, was settled prior to 1100 A.D. and is one of oldest continuously inhabited settlements within the United States. Prehistoric ruins of native people date back thousands of years and are widespread throughout Arizona. One of the oldest standing European structures in the country, San Xavier del Bac mission in Tucson, was built in 1699. And our most famous landmark, the Grand Canyon, is not only around 17 million years old, but is also one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the only one located within the United States. Here are few fun facts about State 48, the Grand Canyon State, that you might not have known: • The first barrel of tequila ever was produced in Nogales, Arizona, in 1936.

• Arizona has the two largest man-made lakes in America: Lake Mead and Lake Powell. • Lake Powell has a shoreline of 2,000 miles, more than the Pacific Coast. • Donkeys are not allowed to sleep in bathtubs. • It is illegal to refuse a person a glass of water. • You can be put in jail for up to 25 years for cutting down a Saguaro cactus. • The first McDonald’s drive-thru window was opened in Sierra Vista. • The world’s oldest rodeo is in Prescott. • The FAA was created in 1958 as the result of two airplanes crashing over the Grand Canyon. JEROME: Jerome, west of Camp Verde, was once a thriving copper mining town and is today well known for its hauntings. BESH BA GOWAH: Just outside the city of Globe, east of the Superstition Mountains, is Besh Ba Gowah, an archeological park featuring the ruins of the ancient Salado people who lived in the Globe-Miami area almost 800 years ago. TOMBSTONE: Tombstone, located south of Tucson, is home of the infamous OK Corral and is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West.

One might think the fate of our planet’s eco system – not to mention the human populations that depend on their stability – should suffice to nudge people into embracing solar energy, the planet’s most abundant potential power source, yet regulators and lawmakers seems determined to come up with ever-more-creative ways of adding artificial urgency to the choice to go solar. Since the Arizona Corporation Commission voted in favor of APS’ 2016 request to pay owners of rooftop solar less for their power than what they sell it for, thereby initiating a new regime in steadily falling annual compensation for solar customers, that urgency has been relative: Do I want great financial rewards this year or just good ones next year? But, with a new rule going into effect soon, homeowners now face an absolute barrier to access that depends on the total power being generated by solar panels in their community, with no certainty over how soon they will indefinitely shut out of the opportunity to go solar. The new rule limits the proportion of solar-generated electricity allowed to exist within an area served by a substation to 15 percent of its peak capacity.That means that once 15 percent of a service area’s total electric current is supplied by rooftop solar, everyone else who might want to go solar may be left out in the cold. The rule technically went into effect February 2020, but implementation has varied somewhat by utility; for example,Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has already started screening applications to determine whether their areas are still eligible for new solar installation, but APS has yet to announce an actual start date. installation company, is urging his sales force to emphasis the urgency of going solar now before areas get effectively locked out.When TEP began implementing this new screening and review process last year, dozens of homeowners were denied their solar applications with the utility, even after having already signed up to have solar installed on their homes. Once the new policy is put in place with other Arizona utilities, it is expected that other areas of Arizona will hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity. Some areas served by APS are sure to be at their allowed imposed limit as soon as the utility starts evaluating applications under the new rule. Buckeye and North Peoria are especially saturated with rooftop solar, Berechet said.“It’s a really bad situation honestly, for both homeowners and everyone in the solar industry,” Berechet said.“It’s almost surreal. We have one customer who just last week was permitted by the city to have their solar system installed,” he said.“Tomorrow, we have to call this customer and cancel their project because the utility denied his solar application due to this new rule.” The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the second highest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to U.S. Energy Information Agency. Yet state regulatory decisions have proven to be a drag on solar’s expansion in what should be one of the most favorable environments for the technology. Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association shows yearly residential installation rising steadily from 2010 to 2017 (the year the state’s utilities started paying less for solar-generated electricity than what they sell it for) and slowing declining or stagnating in the years following. Only time will tell how this new restriction will affect solar energy’s future in Arizona.

alentine’s Day is February 14. It started long ago as a Roman festival and was later converted to St. Valentine’s Day by Pope Gelasius around the end of the fifth century. Much later, in the 14th century, it came to be celebrated as a day of romance. These days, we also give gifts to other family members we love to let them know just how dear they are to us. One way to show our family we love them is to get a will or trust in place. A proper estate plan makes

it much easier on your loved ones if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a proper estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family will have an expensive and time-consuming ordeal ahead of them, and worse, they may end up fighting. HAVING A PROPER PLAN MEANS YOU AVOID SOME OF THESE BIG MISTAKES: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by 60 percent of Arizonans. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The state of Arizona has one for you, but it may not be what you want. Put your own plan in place instead. Who needs a plan?

Those with children, homeowners, and business owners. Whether your situation is simple or complicated, a plan tailored to you will save your family heartache and money. Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert: Sometimes we need to call in experts. We don’t know what we don’t know. If your assets have grown, you may want to consider a trust, and rethink how you are leaving your assets to your heirs. Laws change too and often require an update. In Arizona two key dates are 2008, when the trust code changed completely, and 2012, when estate taxes became less of an issue for most Arizonans. If your plan is older than this, you need a review of the plan and perhaps an update. Four Ways to Prevent the Flu By Dr. Stephanie M. Seitz, ND, MT

any people recognize flu season as fall and winter, but February is typically the peak of flu activity. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s more important than ever to stay healthy, so how can we prevent getting sick? Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself well during the peak of the flu season. WASH YOUR HANDS The pandemic has shone a light on the importance of hand washing, and for good reason. Washing your hands often is the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to wash your hands before and after touching your face, touching your mask, touching a surface that’s frequently touched by others and, of course, after using the restroom. Germs can live on surfaces for two hours or more, so it’s important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and water, an alcohol-based wipe or hand sanitizers are good alternatives.

STAY HYDRATED Staying properly hydrated can support the immune system and allow it to defend your body from viruses. Drinking at least half your body weight in water in ounces is a great way to stay hydrated which enables your body to fight off the flu. It will also help improve your quality of sleep, cognition and mood. If you have a hard time drinking enough water, consider adding your favorite fresh fruit to the water to provide flavor or a marked water bottle to give you goals to hit throughout the day. EAT A HEALTHY DIET Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help support the immune system by providing your body the central nutrients it needs to function properly. The immune system protects the body from infection, so giving the im-

mune system the power it needs to defend the body can help keep you healthy during the flu season. The flu is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets that are produced when speaking, sneezing, or coughing like the coronavirus. old is a type of fungus that grows in moist environments. Mold spores can survive in very hot and dry conditions, waiting patiently for any future moisture to ensue. Even though we live in the dry desert of Arizona, toxic mold can still be problematic in our living and workspace. When mold inhabits outdoor spaces, most individuals will not feel the adverse health effects. However, when there are high concentrations of mold indoors this can cause significant concerns for health. The effects that mold has on an individual’s health extends beyond simple allergies. Mold has been linked to fatigue, brain fog, muscle discomfort, joint pain, anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, sinus, lung congestion, digestive disorders, skin rashes, autoimmune disease, immune

suppression, hormone disorders, neurological disorders, and even cancer to name a few out of the list of nearly 100 odd symptoms that may have a connection to toxic mold exposure. To identify mold as a source of a health concern, an indoor environmental professional (or IEP for short) should be hired. An IEP will identify potential sources of excessive moisture in the home or office and use specialized testing like air sample tests or HERTSMI/ERMI tests. These tests identify which mold spores are present in your living space and help you and your doctor decide if they are a common hazardous mold. Some of the more hazardous molds that may grow indoors are: aspergillus, penicillium, fusarium, stachybotrys, and chaetomium globosum. Mold is a living organism that secretes toxic byproducts called mycotoxins.

These mycotoxins are responsible for making humans feel ill; mycotoxins remain in the environment even once the mold itself dies. The mycotoxins enter humans by inhalation, ingestion or by touch through our skin. Our bodies will attempt to eliminate these toxins quickly, but whatever the body is unable to remove may accumulate and can cause inflammation, immune disruption and irritation to the organs the toxins are stored in. Identifying if a person is suffering from mold exposure largely comes from a quality history by a physician trained in identifying mold sickness. A complete review of all body systems should be taken, with additional questions to help identify source of exposure. There is specialized laboratory testing that will often need to be performed on the patient to analyze immune function, hormone levels, inflammation markers, and mycotoxin excretion.
