PHOENIX COMPLETES LED STREET LIGHT CONVERSION, ESTIMATING $3.5 MILLION IN ENERGY SAVINGS PER YEAR PHOENIX RESIDENTS ARE EXPERIENCING IMPROVED VISIBILITY ON CITY STREETS AFTER THE CONVERSION TO LED STREETLIGHTS. The city of Phoenix completed a citywide conversion of nearly 100,000 standard streetlights to energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) units. This conversion is one of the largest completed by any U.S. city.

nix City Council after several years of testing and evaluation of various LED streetlights. Based upon community input and the evaluations, Phoenix adopted 2,700 kelvin as the standard kelvin level for Phoenix’s new LED streetlights, which is considered a warmer color temperature for LED lights.

“As the fifth largest city and fastest growing city in the nation, I want to make Phoenix a model of sustainability for communities across the country,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “These new LED streetlights not only bring us one step closer to that goal, they also provide tremendous annual cost-savings for residents.”

The new LED streetlights are anticipated to save the city approximately $3.5 million in annual energy costs. By switching to more energy efficient LED fixtures, the city reduced the amount of electricity needed to illuminate the streets by approximately 53 percent. This reduction prevents emissions of up to 18,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year -- the equivalent of taking 3,800 cars off the road.

The conversion was approved by Phoe-

lifespans and produce better light quality than the previously used high pressure sodium streetlights. In addition to substantial energy savings, the LED fixtures will reduce maintenance expenses over their service life. Each of the nearly 100,000 new fixtures comes with a ten-year warranty.

LED technology can also improve roadway visibility and safety due to the improved distribution of light compared to high pressure sodium streetlights. Improved visibility has been linked to a reduction in crime and increased pedestrian safety. The city encourages the public to report streetlight outages, repair requests and other concerns to phoenix.gov/atyourservice by clicking on the “Streetlight Repair Request” form or by calling the streetlight hotline at 602-495-5125.

ENFORCEMENT AND EQUIPMENT WITH AN INFLUX OF WINTER RESIDENTS AND VISITORS — AND ALL THE EVENTS THAT MAKE THE VALLEY A VERY DESIRABLE PLACE TO BE — THERE IS NEW FOCUS ON PUBLIC SAFETY, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT AND EQUIPMENT TO KEEP ROADS SAFE. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has been awarded over $601,000 in grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grants will help with overtime costs for troopers and dispatchers during driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement details, targeted distracted driving enforcement operations, and seatbelt enforcement details. The grants will also allow for the purchase of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) speed measurement devices and other speed measuring radars to be used for traffic enforcement by troopers. Additionally, the grants will be utilized to purchase a fully equipped police vehicle, drones and drone equipment, bike helmets and rear safety lights to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety education throughout the state of Arizona. One of the grants will also provide money for the state crime labs to purchase materials and supplies to further support their mission.

The following is a breakdown of grant money allocated from GOHS: • $10,000 for Dispatchers assigned to DUI Enforcement Details • $244,280 for Selective Traffic Enforcement Program and Materials • $30,000 for Distracted Driving Enforcement • $75,000 for the State Crime Lab • $100,000 for DUI Enforcement • $30,000 Seatbelt Enforcement Details • $1,055 for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety • $52,134 for DUI Impaired Driving Equipment • $59,000 for Drone Materials, Software and Equipment “Thanks to the continued support of the GOHS, the Highway Patrol Division will be able to enhance enforcement of distracted driving, seatbelt usage, aggressive driving and DUI, all of which continue to be large factors in injury and fatal collisions,” said Lt. Col. Jenna Mitchell, Assistant Director, Arizona Department of Public Safety, whose mission is to protect human life and property by enforcing state laws, deterring criminal activity and providing vital support to the State of Arizona and its citizens. northtatumtimes.com

BE BALLOT READY FOR 2020 ELECTIONS WITH NEW MARICOPA COUNTY WEBSITE MARICOPA COUNTY VOTERS NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTIONS IN 2020: BEBALLOTREADY.VOTE. Voters can make changes to their voter information, find what upcoming elections they are eligible for, sign up for text alerts, explore the new ballot style and more. The Maricopa County Elections Department and Maricopa County Recorder’s Office launched the website with a new campaign to educate voters about the March 17 Democratic Presidential Preference Election and how to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. Ads will run in both English and Spanish across a variety of platforms.

The County is investing in voter education to improve the voter experience. A key piece of this campaign is to inform voters that only registered Democrats can participate in the Presidential Preference Election on March 17. “We are expecting historic voter turnout in 2020, so it’s important that we do everything we can to make sure voters are informed about upcoming elections,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman, District 3. “Be Ballot Ready is an easy way for residents to find everything they need from looking up whether they are registered to vote, to when’s their next election, and what’s on their ballot.”

The campaign will also introduce a new mascot “Phil the Ballot.” Modeled after the county’s new oval ballot style, “Phil the Ballot” will encourage voters to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. “I am excited to introduce voters to ‘Phil the Ballot.’ We hope this character will get voters excited and engaged with the election,” said Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. “There is a lot of important information that voters need to know about the elections, and Phil can help voters Be Ballot Ready.” Kicking off the 2020 election season, Tempe and Chandler are holding citywide elections on March 10. The following week, registered Democrats throughout Maricopa County have the opportunity to vote in the Democratic

Presidential Preference Election on March 17. Because the Presidential Preference Election is not a primary, registered independents are not eligible to vote. The Republican and Libertarian parties have opted out of holding a preference election. To participate in the Presidential Preference Election, voters must be a registered as a Democrat by February 18. For more, visit BeBallotReady.vote.

FUNDPHX LETS YOU LEARN ABOUT THE DOLLARS AND SENSE IN PHOENIX’S BUDGET ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DIVING INTO THE DOLLARS AND SENSE BEHIND WHAT MAKES THE CITY OF PHOENIX RUN? Now you can learn more about all the programs and services the city provides, and what it costs to bring them to you every day. That’s possible through a new tool, called FundPHX, that takes the city’s $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget and brings it directly to your device – computer, smart phone or tablet. All the city’s programs are there, with costs and descriptions, so you can learn about what it takes to provide everything from youth recreation activities to reading programs and senior services in your neighborhood. The tool is loaded with General Fund budgets for departments or city functions. Each of those areas is also linked to the

city’s Inventory of Programs, which provides more detail on a department- and program-specific level. With FundPHX you can provide comments directly on the budget, and let the city know what you think is important. You can add funding to programs you’d like to see grow, and reallocate funding from programs that you feel could be used elsewhere. Once you’ve made your choices, save your work, and share it with the city. An essential part of planning for the city of Phoenix is the development of its annual budget every year. The more than $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget includes everything from police and fire services, to parks, libraries, and senior services. The city of Phoenix is known for one of the most transparent and participatory budgeting processes

in the country. Over the years, staff has looked for ways to include more people in the budgeting process, especially those who are not able to attend the city’s budget hearings. This tool allows people to participate at their own pace, on their own schedule, in conjunction with the city’s traditional budget process. The FundPHX software lets you see for yourself what each service costs, and how much it would cost (or save) when you change service levels. With a budget that size, supporting the fifth largest city in the country and 1.7 million residents, it can be a challenge to understand everything that goes into the services you receive. To help residents better understand how our budget is created, the Budget & Research Department has added a new tool to gather feedback and help you see what makes Phoenix run. Visit phoenix.gov/fundphx for more.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS COME TO NORTH PHOENIX AND NORTH SCOTTSDALE NATIONWIDE REALTY INVESTORS’ 134-ACRE MIXED-USE CAVASSON DEVELOPMENT IN SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA IS CONTINUING TO SEE NEW TENANTS AND DEVELOPMENT. Cavasson is located along Loop 101, at the southwest corner of Hayden Road and Legacy Boulevard in Scottsdale. The initial phase of the project will include several commercial office buildings including the new 460,000 square-foot regional headquarters building for Nationwide

Insurance, multifamily apartments, a six-story parking structure, retail and restaurants, two hotel sites and significant infrastructure improvements.

Reflective of its surrounding landscape, Cavasson will be highly designed and beautifully landscaped. The project’s mix of uses will include approximately 1.8 million square feet of market leading commercial office space, 1,600 multifamily units, hotels, retail, restaurants, services and amenities. The walkable community will include tree-lined sidewalks, bike paths, green spaces and community gathering places with ample parking. The project will include an infrastructure investment of approximately $30 million—delivering new roads, sidewalks, improved connectivity and flood mitigation improvements which will benefit the property and significant acreage surrounding the development. Serving as Cavasson’s first anchor tenant, the new 460,000-square-foot Nationwide Insurance regional headquarters building will house approximately 2,200 associates with room to grow. The five-story, world-class facility will allow the company to bring more associates and like business operations together to create efficient and collaborative work environments and align business units in an effort to better serve the needs of both the company’s policyholders and its associates. Nationwide plans

to move its associates into the new building in late 2020.

In September of 2018, Nationwide Realty Investors purchased the 134-acre site for the Cavasson development at state auction. Proceeds from the purchase went to the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund, designated for the benefit of Arizona K-12 public education. Cavasson is owned and developed by Nationwide Realty Investors, in partnership with Grayhawk Development. Another new development, Tallinn at Desert Ridge is 25.06 acres of land at 56th Street and Deer Valley Road. Shea Homes purchased the property late last year and construction of model homes is set to start in the latter half of the year. Tallinn at Desert Ridge is slated to include approximately 83 single-family homes, ranging from approximately 2,318 to 3,738 square feet, in Phase 1 of development. Floorplans at Tallinn are expected to mirror those that are available at another one of Shea Homes’ developments — Emblem at Aloravita in Peoria. The community will also include a large community park and a rec center. Phase 2 is expected to include an addition 54 lots by late 2020. *Concept photo provided courtesy of Cavasson.com

CLOSURE OF TWO LOOP 101 RAMPS AT SEVENTH AVE. THROUGH MARCH TWO OF THE LOOP 101 (PIMA FREEWAY) RAMPS AT SEVENTH AVENUE IN PHOENIX ARE GOING TO BE CLOSED THROUGH MARCH TO ALLOW WORK TO ADVANCE ON THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S FREEWAY WIDENING PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY. The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp and eastbound onramp at Seventh Avenue are scheduled to reopen in March. ADOT started the $185 million project to add lanes and make other improvements along 13 miles of Loop 101 between Interstate 17 and Pima Road. The entire project is scheduled for completion in early 2021. The westbound on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp at Seventh Street closed previously as part of the project. They also are scheduled to reopen in March. The ramp closures allow crews to widen bridges and reconstruct ramps between Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street to accommodate additional lanes.

Drivers on westbound Loop 101 can exit at Seventh Street and enter westbound Loop 101 at Seventh Avenue via the westbound frontage road (Beardsley Road), while eastbound Loop 101 drivers can exit at Seventh Avenue and enter at Seventh Street via the eastbound frontage road. MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE: • Adding one general purpose lane in each direction between I-17 and Pima • Adding an auxiliary lane in each direction between Seventh Street and Cave Creek Road • Constructing a new overpass structure at the future Miller Road alignment • Modifying freeway ramps and frontage road connections at 11 interchanges Additional components include construction of noise or retaining walls where warranted, improvements to drainage and new rubberized asphalt resurfacing and pavement markings.

This project is utilizing the design-build (D/B) method of delivery to help reduce the overall project timeline. This delivery method differs from the more traditional design-bid-build approach in which the project is completed in two phases (designed and then constructed). The D/B method involves pairing civil engineering firms with construction contractors to create “design builders” who work synergistically from begin-

BEAUTY FROM

ning to end. This creates more opportunities for innovation and can reduce costs. The D/B method of delivery is most advantageous when transportation improvements are needed immediately to reduce high traffic volume or chronic congestion. For more information on the D/B method, go to azdot.gov/ node/7485. To learn more about these improvements, please visit azdot.gov/Loop101Improvements.

CHARITY

FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH: SHOEBOX MINISTRY

M

ost of us take soap and shampoo for granted. Our hands are clean, teeth brushed, and our faces washed. Sadly, for far too many of our neighbors, this is not the case.

For kids, school attendance, academic achievement, positive peer relationships, confidence, a sense of control, and health all increase with good hygiene.

Since 1988, those at Shoebox Ministry have made it their sole mission to provide hygiene items to neighbors in need through their network of over 30 nonprofit agencies, all of whom are local to the Greater Phoenix area. These agencies distribute their hygiene kits to their clients who are adults and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence survivors, people in recovery, and others who need, but cannot afford, hygiene items. For many adults, having the opportunity to maintain their personal hygiene means that a homeless individual may have a chance at being offered employment, setting them on a path to become independent and productive members of society once again.

Lee Humes, founder of one of their nonprofit partners, Deep Within, and Shoebox hygiene kits recipient himself over 20 years ago, said “Shoebox Ministry and the personal hygiene items represented a new beginning in my life and my recovery, and gave me a fresh start with increased confidence to continue my life - and my journey.” While the government-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds provides money for food, it never allows for the purchase of basic hygiene items. Shoebox fills this gap in our community, helping to alleviate the burden of having to choose or go without.

Shoebox Ministry is grateful for the support of our community here in the Valley and would like to leave with four ways to get involved:

• You’re invited to Fill the (Shoe) Box on April 3 for a hot breakfast, a little inspiration, and an opportunity to contribute to the good work they are doing now. Find more information, including sponsorship opportunities, at shoeboxministry.org/upcomingevents/breakfast. • Donate new and very gently used purses for their annual Mother’s Day event where they give away purses stocked with beauty products to moms experiencing homelessness and domestic violence survivors. • Have a drawer full of toiletries from traveling? They’d love to take them off your hands! Stop into their office, located at 13645 N. 32nd St in

Phoenix, Monday-Friday between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

• As a nonprofit, they have access to discounted toiletry items and can purchase by the pallet, averaging 3x more hygiene items with every donated dollar. Bonus: your gift qualifies as an Arizona Charitable Tax Credit donation, meaning that up to $400 or $800 of it is a dollar-fordollar reduction in state taxes. When you make a donation to Shoebox Ministries, it doesn’t cost you a dime. Questions? Visit shoeboxministry.org/ tax-credit We know that when everyone has access to the basics, they gain a positive outlook and are able to take the next big steps in their journey of becoming productive and accepted members of our community—and we’d love to have you become a part of ours! REGISTRATION, RE-ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR 2020 ARIZONA GIVES DAY

C

oming off a record-breaking outcome in 2019 when Arizona Gives Day raised $3.6 million for nonprofits across the state, registration and re-enrollment is now open for Arizona nonprofits interested in participating in the 2020, 24-hour online fundraising event, set for April 7. Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously, creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Re-enrollment is required annually and can be completed at www.AzGives.org before March 2. Registration deadline for new nonprofits is February 24. Since 2013, Arizona Gives Day has raised more than $17 million for nonprofits statewide. Presented by FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good” Arizona Gives Day is hosted by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum. “Individuals, businesses and communities joined together last year to make a dramatic difference for 10 • February 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

nonprofit agencies doing great work across our state and we want to build on that momentum by engaging even more nonprofits and donors this year,” said Arizona Alliance of Nonprofits Chief Executive Officer Kristen Merrifield. “Our ultimate goal is to provide critically important donations that enable Arizona nonprofits of every size to continue doing what they do so well in communities across the state.” Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit; IRS Determination Letter; the most current completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s operating budget; and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations. “Arizona Gives Day offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for year-round giving and for donors to create personal fundraising campaigns,” Merrifield said. CHANGES IMPLEMENTED FOR 2020 CAMPAIGN: • A better user experience on the back end, including a new dashboard. • Notifications for failed or disputed donations. • Adjustments to the size categories for the prize pool which reached $180,000 last year, and

• Weekly status updates to remind organizations to submit their profiles. NONPROFITS REGISTERING OR RE-REGISTERING FOR ARIZONA GIVES DAY 2020 ALSO WILL FIND: • A “roadmap” to guide nonprofits through the registration process. • The opportunity to submit support requests online. • The ability for organizations to include any matching grant amount and their fundraising goal on their profile page. • The opportunity for their biggest fans and donors to create their own fundraising page. A full explanation of improvements and answers to important questions about Arizona Gives Day can be found at www.AZGives.org. For interested donors, AzGives.org offers an advanced search filter to find nonprofits by specific criteria, area of focus, and which donations may qualify as an Arizona tax credit. Donors can also create an account to pre-schedule donations or can check out as a guest, set up recurring donations, and make changes to their giving throughout the year. “We want to make giving as easy as possible,” Merrifield said. northtatumtimes.com

FINANCIAL

RENEE A. HANSON NAMED CERTIFIED FINANCIAL TRANSITIONIST

W

e are proud to announce that Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, CeFT®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA®, CFS® is now a Certified Financial Transitionist®. Renee A. Hanson has 29 years of experience as a financial advisor and is also a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. Her practice focuses on helping individuals manage their finances while experiencing life transitions, such as divorce, widowhood, and retirement. “As a Certified Financial Transitionist®, I understand human transitions on their deepest levels. I know what influences the way we think and act when our world has suddenly and irrevocably changed,” says Renee. “I’m able to identify when a transition is going well, and I have tools to further enhance the experience. And if a client is struggling with their transition, I know how to keep them safe and help them work through their difficulties.” What is a Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®)? Every person will experience at least one of the following major life transitions, and the likelihood that more than one at a time will be experienced increases with age. • Inheritance • Loss of a parent • Loss of a spouse • Divorce • Major career change • Retirement • The sale of a business • Insurance settlement • Pro sports or entertainer contract Whether they begin with an inheritance, the sale of a business, or both simultaneously, transitions thrust

individuals and families into a position where what was once considered stable is suddenly in flux. Traditional financial planning covers the bases when it comes to important topics such as taxes, investments, cash flow, and estate planning. But that’s only half of the experience of financial change. The other half is the human experience of adapting to change. The Sudden Money Institute (SMI) has spent 19 years studying the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of change. They’ve even delved into what thought leaders in the business world say about change and adaptation. As important, they know that perceptions and expectations about change are powerful and can profoundly affect thinking and decision-making. The Sudden Money Institute created the Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®) designation to give financial planners and their clients science-based, field-tested tools and protocols designed specifically to merge the personal side and the technical side of financial change. The training and certifying division of SMI, the Financial Transitionist Institute, awards this new designation only after candidates demonstrate fluency with the unique skill set of the CeFT®; deep knowledge of the stages of transition; and skillful use of proprietary materials designed for Financial Transitions Planning. That yearlong-plus process includes mandatory coaching, over 30 hours of coursework, and a Day-Long Certification Exam that tests content, communication, and listening. The result? Professionals who can create solutions that are customized for each client’s unique values, relationships, and vision of the future.

Tax-Smart Giving with Qualified Charitable Distributions

T

hinking about making a large financial gift to charity? Looking for ways to reduce your taxes? If you’re retired and have IRA assets, the qualified charitable donation (QCD) tax rule might work in your favor. The QCD rule allows IRA owners or those who have inherited an IRA to exempt their required minimum distributions (RMDs) from taxation through direct charitable giving. It’s especially pertinent given recent tighter rules on itemized deductions. Here’s what you need to know to benefit from QCDs. Who qualifies to make QCDs The age requirements for RMDs and QCDs are similar, but not the same. IRA owners become eligible for RMDs any time during the year in which they turn 72 years old. For the QCD rule to be in effect, you must have reached 70½ years of age. It’s a slight distinction that matters when you want to reap the QCD tax benefit in your first year of eligibility. Meeting RMD rules with a QCD RMDs can often be seen an annoyance, especially when you don’t need the money from your IRA. Yet failing to take RMDs is a costly mistake. The IRS imposes heavy fines on taxpayers who skip this annual obligation. If you can get by without taking income from your IRA, you might want to consider doing good with the dollars you are required to withdraw. That’s where the QCD can do double duty. The IRS states, “your qualified charitable distribution can satisfy all or part of the amount of your required minimum distribution from your IRA.”1 Eligible amounts The QCD rule applies to IRA distributions of up to $100,000 annually. The limit applies to the IRA owner and not a household. This means your spouse can also donate up to $100,000 (from his or her own IRA) through a QCD in the same year.

Who can receive QCDs Choose your charity carefully. QCDs only apply to charities granted tax-exempt status by the IRS. This generally includes nonprofit groups such as churches, charities and other 501(c)(3) organizations. When in doubt, visit the IRS online tool to confirm nonprofit status.2 Eligible IRAs You can make a QCD from either a traditional or Roth IRA. However, the tax benefit associated with the QCD rule only applies to owners of traditional IRAs since withdrawals from Roth IRAs are not taxable. Savings held in an employer-sponsored retirement account are not eligible; consider an IRA rollover if you want to take advantage of the QCD rule in the future. Tell your tax preparer It’s important to properly report your QCD at tax time. Under certain circumstances, the IRS may require an extra form. Plan ahead Talk to your financial advisor at or before the beginning of the tax year if you wish to satisfy RMD rules with charitable giving. Consult your tax professional to ensure compliance with both RMD and QCD rules. 1 https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/retirement-plansfaqs-regarding-iras-distributions-withdrawals 2 https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/tax-exemptorganization-search THIS IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT.

KIDS’ CORNER

Kids & Golf IN ARIZONA I

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

t’s February, which in Arizona means prime golf season. Ranked as the second “golfiest” state in the union by Golf Magazine (only Florida ranks higher), our state hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and is home to seven of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses. Our stunning desert and mountain views serve as a backdrop to a world class golf experience, and we can’t think of a better location to introduce the game of golf to your youngsters. There are many kid-friendly golfing facilities, camps, and training resources available in the Valley of the Sun.

any sport is to have fun. Golf is no exception. When you take your kids out to the course, rather than focusing on developing the proper swing and learning the fundamentals right away, let them enjoy just whacking the ball around and being creative. Experts recommend that adults focus on having fun with golf initially, rather than trying to develop a great swing or technical ability, so that your kids will be more likely to want to go to the course with you again. Playing frequently is the biggest key to developing a golfer; learning proper technique will come as you child’s excitement for playing golf grows.

Here are a few tips for getting your kids started on the right foot when you introduce them to golf.

It’s also a good idea to start with the short game when you’re getting kids interested in golf. It can be hard for small children to get a golf ball into the air, but almost anyone can putt. Take your kids to play mini-golf, or to the driving range to practice and learn about the game. Also, take time to teach them about golfing rules and etiquette while you play, and emphasize that this is a fun activity – there should be no pressure, even if they can’t hit the ball very well.

TEACHING THE GAME AND KEEPING IT FUN The most important thing to remember when teaching kids how to play

12 • February 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Before you head out, be sure that you are prepared for your time out on the course. Wear sunscreen, hats, and the proper attire required by the course you plan to play on, and plan ahead for water, weather, and snacks. One of the most important things to think about is kidsized equipment. Many experts say that a putter is the best choice as a kid’s first club, then a 9-iron training club because it is fun and easy for kids to hit the ball in the air off of a tee. The weight and length of clubs makes a difference in a youngster’s ability to swing the club, so take time to visit a local golf store or pro shop to make sure your child’s clubs fit properly as they grow and develop. But a word of advice: golf equipment can be very expensive, so save your money until you know that golf is a good fit for your kid. Many instructors and courses have loaner equipment that your child can use until they start getting excited about playing on a regular basis.

KIDS GOLF RESOURCES There are hundreds of golf courses here in the valley, so do some research before you go to make sure that the course you want to play is kid friendly. Find out the course policies and costs of tee times, equipment rentals, and dress code so you can prepare ahead of time. Here are a few websites for some great advice on making golf a fun and enjoyable activity for you and your kids, as well as information on camps and competitive play. www.pga.com/story/nine-tips-tohelp-junior-golfers www.jgaa.org www.boysgolfclub.org www.girlsgolfofphoenix.org Be sure to check out LadybugsBlog. com for more articles and recommendations for fun things to do outside with kids everywhere in Arizona!

Melding the best of two worlds — clinical expertise in autism and excellence in early childhood education — the Young Mind Community center aims to provide a comprehensive, transdisciplinary approach that delivers the best possible outcomes. The Community Center’s approach is based on achieving optimal results through various methods including an inclusive community, transdisciplinary approach, positive mind framework, continuum of supports, exceptional education, and family capacitybuilding. Each of these approaches comes together to serve the complete purpose. The Community Center believes that belonging gives purpose and meaning to every life and that it benefits all people by providing support, trust and mutual respect. The Center’s programs are intended to promote positive relationships among children and

Their programs focus on developmentally appropriate practices that provide an optimal balance of adult-guided and child-guide experiences, complexity and challenge of activities, learning formats and contexts, and indoor and outdoor learning time. The YMCC’s partner organization the Young Mind Center provides intervention specific to needs of children with autism in an inclusive setting, evaluations for language, attention, learning and behavior,

as well as clinical services including behavioral therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and more. Assessments are specific for each evaluation. For example, an autism evaluation can include parent or caregiver interviews, developmental or cognitive assessments, adaptive behavior interview, child observation in a naturalistic setting (such as school, daycare or a community location) and more. The Young Mind Center’s team of psychologists, behavior analysts, speech-language pathologists, and occupational therapists can provide a wide range of services specific to the individual needs of every child. The YMCC model also extends to its inclusive preschool that aims to provide a solid foundation to set the stage for future academic and personal achievement. The preschool is geared for children between the ages of 18 months and five years — and is inclusive to children with and without autism. The preschool allows students to benefit from the practices that encourage young children’s optimal learning and development. Spring Training

IS UP TO BAT THIS MONTH O

By Molly Cerreta Smith

ne of the greatest times of the year to be a valley resident, in my opinion, is during Spring Training! The amazing weather, the array of beautiful stadiums and the amount of sheer baseball talent that flocks to the valley throughout February and March in the name of Spring Training all add up to a great time, regardless of which team is up to bat. With convenient stadiums within reach in every area of the valley, there’s no excuse not to get out and catch a game during Spring Training. Attending Spring Training games is one of my favorite pastimes, and I’m not alone in declaring my love for Spring Training. The City of Peoria’s Mayor Cathy Carlot calls spring training one of the City’s favorite seasons of the year. “Now in our 27th year, Peoria is proud to be the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres. While we continue to host the best lawn seating experience in the Cactus League, over the years, Peoria has worked hard to elevate the fan experience through a series of upgrades and new amenities,” Mayor Carlot says. “This includes more shaded seats, a children’s splash and play zone–the first of its kind in the Valley, and a private, luxury room available for up to 200 guests that offers a VIP experience with a private patio overlooking the diamond.” This year, baseball fans in the Peoria area can enjoy the action and excitement of watching pre-season baseball with multiple food and beverage options that range from a Burger Bar to various specialty items like the jalapeno-wrapped foot-long hot dog, mac n’ cheese hot dog, family-size souvenir helmet nachos, and street tacos.

Mayor Carlot adds, “With many unique amenities designed to keep the entire family entertained, this year we are also proud to continue our discount program for Peoria residents called Resident Rewards. This offer allows Peoria residents a chance to save 25 percent on tickets and receive free parking. Additional game promotions include events like Dog Days, Kids Days, Friday night happy hours, and Hometown Heroes to support our veterans and active military. And, as always, Autograph Alley and the practice fields are open for up close interactions with the players.” The Peoria Sports Complex opened in 1994 and was the Cactus League’s first two-team facility. After an incredible partnership that spanned more than two decades with the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, in 2013, the teams signed an agreement for another 20 years. This long-standing partnership is a point of pride for the City of Peoria, and a unique opportunity for families and friends to join together in celebration of America’s favorite pastime.

Over in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Stadium is a fan favorite. Due to the fact that it’s nestled so supremely in Old Town Scottsdale, baseball fans can also enjoy the best of the surrounding area including amazing hiking, bicycling, shopping, dining, arts and entertainment. Free three-hour parking is available and free Old Town trolley, which extends its route to Scottsdale Stadium starting 90 minutes before and ending 30 minutes after each game, is a great way to catch a game as well as a ride around exploring the sites of Old Town! There is something to be said for the charm and history of Scottsdale Stadium, and according to Karen Churchard, Director of Tourism and Events for the City of Scottsdale, it still sits on the same corner where the original wooden bandbox was built in 1955. As the location for the San Francisco Giants Spring Training “home,” Scottsdale Stadium and the City of Scottsdale itself has become a highly desirable tourist destination for baseball fans from far and wide with its great weather, outdoor recreational amenities and worldnorthtatumtimes.com

class resorts and spas. In fact, Spring Training serves as a powerful economic booster for the City. According to the 2015 Cactus League Attendee Tracking Survey, the total economic impact of Spring Training at Scottsdale Stadium is nearly $28 million, which includes spending that occurs in Scottsdale by residents and out-of-town visitors attending the games. Estimated tax revenues to the City as a result of this spending is nearly $695,000. This year, Scottsdale Stadium boasts a new and improved famed Charro Lodge, featuring an exclusive elevated experience on the 2nd level, a new social bar located in the Corral, more permanently shaded structure and 20 percent more capacity. The private facility within the stadium offers fans a VIP experience and with the Charro Lodge pass includes general admission, complimentary food and beverages, patio-style seating with optimum views of not only the game but of the fabulous people watching for which Scottsdale Stadium is known. Many of the nearby restaurants and bars get in on the Spring Training action by offering specials during games as well as transportation via bus or otherwise to and from the games. Tickets for Scottsdale Stadium can be purchased at www.sfgiants.com During Spring Training, the Arizona Diamondbacks share their home, Salt River Field at Talking Stick, with the Colorado Rockies. The stadium itself has become an integral part of the rapidly growing entertainment district that draws thousands to its multitude of attractions beyond just baseball. Salt River Field prides itself on building “the biggest and best spring training baseball facility in the country.” With a wide array of dining and drinking options, a beautiful layout and surrounding mountain views, it’s tough to argue that point. From Camelback Ranch in Glendale to Tempe Diablo Stadium, there are opportunities from one end of the valley to the other in which to catch a game while enjoying a frosty brew and a classic ballpark dog (and some of the that wonderful people watching) under the glorious Arizona sun. hat do Valentine’s Day and Real Estate have in common? For vacation home buyers and locals, it’s the best time of year to fall in love with homes! The snowbirds flock here to escape the chills and enjoy the thrills of our sunny activities – pool time, hiking, biking, golfing, tennis, outdoor dining, outdoor shopping and more! Our resorts boast not only stunning pools, lazy rivers and fine dining, but also world-class spas. We also have major events that bring visitors, who often turn into vacation home buyers including Barrett-Jackson, Phoenix Open and Spring Training!

For locals, moving in the summer is often less than ideal because really… who wants to be packing and unpacking when it’s 110 degrees outside? Plus, many locals plan extended summer vacations (they call us “Zonies” in San Diego for a reason!)

WE ARE THE BEST AT WHAT WE DO!

The combination of snowbirds and locals desiring a spring move vs. a summer move puts the Spring in high gear for real estate. We typically tell Buyers that if you’re looking to buy a home and can’t find one, the Spring will bring an influx of inventory, so just wait a bit. We also tell Sellers that there are more Buyers in the Spring, so it’s a good time to list. With inventory currently at record lows, we can’t express enough how this is a great time to list your home for sale. At the time of writing this article, there were only seven homes for sale in the 85054 zip code of Desert Ridge and 33 homes in the 85050 section of Desert Ridge & Tatum Highlands combined. That does not support the current and anticipated demand for the area.

If you are listing your home for sale, here are some tips for attracting those vacation and snowbird buyers. Keep in mind that they are buying the home to enjoy on future vacations, meaning that you want the home to be similar to a hotel – clean, bright and worry-free. So, make any necessary repairs prior to

showing the home. They don’t want to walk into work, they want to walk into fun!

• SHOWCASE OUTDOOR AMENITIES: Pool, spa, BBQ, fire pit – they want to see all the fun they can have at home! • LANDSCAPING: Ensure you are weed-free and replace any dead or missing plants – they are used to what hotel grounds look like. • LANDSCAPE LIGHTING: Add lighting if needed or replace any broken lights – they will drive by at night to check it out! • NEARBY ACTIVITIES: Include information about nearby golf, spas, hiking and more. Our most important tip for selling your home to vacation buyers is flexibility. Have your home ready to show on short notice. When people are on vacation, they make last minute decisions to look at homes and their schedules are in flux based on their golf game, lunch plans and hiking excursions. They aren’t the best planners and while buying a home is important to them, their fun is typically a higher priority. They may run late or spend a long time in your home too, so keep in mind that they are in vacation mode and not moving at a regular pace. We wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Home Buying and Selling Season! Holly has been a Desert Ridge resident since 2000 and has been a Realtor since 2006. SPOIL YOU PUP WITH A CUSTOM BED BY WOODWORKING ARTIST MONICA ROBLES

By Molly Cerreta Smith

L

ocal woodworking artist Monica Robles was quite literally born into her love of this creative craft. Growing up in Somerton, Arizona, Robles remembers her father building additions to their house and working on cars. “My dad was an amazing man, a true craftsman,” she says, “My parents built the house I grew up in…without any experience, my mom learned how to put up drywall and framing. I feel like this is why I love making things with my hands and the feeling of creating makes me happy.” After attending UofA, where she graduated with a BA in graphic design, Robles moved to Phoenix. In September of 2011, she collaboratively launched The Lab on Roosevelt Row, which became an explosion of creative energy in downtown Phoenix. “This was the stepping stone that brought me closer and

was how I became more involved with the Phoenix art community,” she says. “I’ve been lucky to surround myself with a close group of creative women who have pushed me to be where I am today. Phoenix has a lot of amazing people and artists. It’s wonderful how the community works together.”

Robles evolved from creating mixed media artwork to custom furniture making about five years ago and with no formal training. She took on a few commissions making benches and small tables. “From there it was no turning back! I got so excited to learn how to make bigger pieces,” she says. Robles also did an internship in North Carolina with a friend who is a high-end modern furniture maker. “The process of making furniture from start to finish was quite an eye opener, and learning joinery and other skills that I brought back home to my own furniture making.” Robles takes inspiration from old houses, often “treasure hunts” for

wood in old barns in North Carolina. Her work has recently gotten noticed by West Elm, which is now carrying her pet beds. “They contacted me and wanted to include me as a #westelmlocal,” she says. “This is my first time having my furniture pieces in a retail store, so it is super exciting. Currently, I have two small pet beds available for purchase or people can contact me to design a custom pet bed to complement their home or office.”

Robles admits she loves to lose herself in the process of creating custom one-of-a-kind pieces. “I usually throw my wood scraps onto the floor and start putting a pattern together. There have been times where I step back and feel it’s not the right one. So I start all over again and sometimes it’s something completely different than what I intended it to be at the beginning. My favorite part of it is once I find the design that I believe the client will love, I step back and admire the beautiful pattern. I love to create furniture that

is nothing you would find at a typical furniture store. I try to add accents colors and patterns that are unique in each piece that make it look visually pleasing and in turn make it more of a work of art.” While her works are one of a kind, Robles stresses that so is she. “I want to be known as creative Hispanic queer woman in the art community who has inspired someone or many to do what they love,” says Robles. To request a custom piece, Robles can be reached via Instagram at @monicaroblesart, Facebook at Facebook.com/ monicaroblesart or via email at monicaroblesart@gmail.com.

LEGAL WHAT’S THE BEST VALENTINE’S GIFT FOR YOUR FAMILY? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

W

ith Valentine’s Day here, I’ve been wondering how to show my family I love them. Of course, estate planning was one of my first thoughts (right after chocolate)!

Estate planning truly is a gift to your family and loved ones. A proper estate plan makes it easier on your loved ones if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a cohesive and thoughtful estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess that your family may have to spend huge sums of money

and lots of time and effort to clean up.

heart. I went into estate planning to help clients avoid these messy fights.

If you are incapacitated, they will have to petition the court to be appointed to care for you and take charge of your finances. That proceeding, called conservatorship, will involve at least two attorneys, even if the family all agrees on who is to serve and what is to happen. On your death, they will have to file a probate proceeding with the court, which will take more time and expense to wrap up than it takes to administer a proper plan.

Putting an estate plan in place shows your love by easing the burden of administering your estate and by eliminating or minimizing potential arguments and controversies. When there’s nothing to fight about, it’s much easier for your loved ones to think loving thoughts about you, and to love and support each other during the difficult time of your incapacity or death.

Even worse, your estate may result in a family fight. Time after time in family estate fights, my clients have said they would never speak to some of their family again or lamented that the messy estate issues were breaking the family apart. I value family highly and these cases broke my

BUSINESS

Local Agent Buys North THE POWER OF NETWORKING Valley Homes for Cash By Molly Cerreta Smith

N

etworking is one of the most beneficial ways to take any business to the next level or for new business owners to make connections in the community. Here, we take a look at the numerous ways that networking can benefit a business. MAKING CONNECTIONS New to a networking event? Don’t be shy – jump right in! At one point or another, everyone there was a newcomer, so don’t hesitate to approach new people, introduce yourself and ask them about their business/company and what brings them to the event. This is the easiest way to start getting the most out of the event and start connecting with new people. SENSE OF COMMUNITY Joining a group of like-minded people can not only help people make connections, but it can also build a sense of community. Businesses in the same neighborhood or in the same industry can really benefit from building a community that supports one another. EXPANDING YOUR REACH Networking is also beneficial for helping people expand their circle and reach new people they might not have otherwise met or done business with. For those that are new to the area, starting with a new company, opening a new business or wanting to expand their businesses, networking allows the perfect opportunity to meet new people and get connected with other businesses. SHARING NEW IDEAS Whether or not people in the network-

ing group are in the same industry, they can share ideas, bounce thoughts off one another and help create new and different solutions to the “same old” challenges. Getting a diverse range of opinions, advice or support on a topic is one of the greatest benefits of being part of a networking group. GAINING REFERRALS Some of the best advertising one can get is the referral of a friend, colleague or business associate. By expanding their reach and making new connections, businesses can truly benefit from great a great resource of referrals. ADVANCING YOUR CAREER Networking isn’t just for business owners and top-level execs. There are benefits to networking if you’re looking for a new job, looking to gain more experience or find a mentor, or if you’re looking to move up the ladder. INCREASING YOUR PROFILE Those that are part of the regular networking scene are the ones that people begin to recognize and see as a source of knowledge and advice. When you’re looking to become a part of a community, this is an extremely powerful tool.

North Valley - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the

Real Estate Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you’ll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-2771959 and enter 2222. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to find out how to guarantee the cash sale of your home.

BUSINESS PROS CONNECT

Networking events allow you an opportunity to get out there, make yourself more visible, and introduce yourself and your company to a whole new group of people. There are so many ways that individuals and businesses as a whole can benefit from taking the time to network. It’s usually a social environment, so don’t stress too much about trying to get a hard sales pitch in right then and there. Focus on making genuine connections first, and the rest will come.

February 21

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Please join fellow entrepreneurs in the area for our monthly networking meeting. We are here to build relationships and exchange referrals. These events are FREE to attend and non-industry exclusive. Be sure to bring plenty of business cards, and bring a friend!

GETAWAY

Arizona's West Coast

GETAWAY TO WESTERN ARIZONA LAKE HAVASU

W

ay out west, along the Colorado River, the “west coast” of Arizona stretches from north of Hoover Dam to just south of Yuma and the border of Mexico. Although the summers can be even hotter than Phoenix, winter is a great time of year to visit, and the Colorado River and Lake Havasu provide a cool getaway for every water enthusiast all year round. Here are a few places we recommend you check out when you head for Western Arizona. LAKE MEAD AND THE HOOVER DAM Built in 1936, the Hoover Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country today and provides hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. One of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, the immense dam spans the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, creating Lake Mead along the Colorado River. Visitors can see the dam up close by driving down a winding road into the canyon and parking to take a tour of the historic art deco structure. The byproduct of this fantastic feat of engineering is 700 miles of Lake Mead shoreline, an attraction for water and outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all kinds. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was the nations first designated recreation area, providing 1.5 million acres of preserved recreational space 20 • February 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier across mountains, canyons, valleys, wilderness areas, and two lakes, Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. ROUTE 66 AND GRAND CANYON WEST A bit further south as you head down I-40, you find many areas of the highway that run right along the historic Route 66, including Kingman, considered to be the heart of Route 66. Tiny towns a little east of Kingman also give you a taste of the historic Route 66, like Peach Springs or Seligman, the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Reservation and is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West has two main locations: The West Rim, which is accessible from State Route 93 on the way to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, is the site of the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon. The second location is Peach Springs, located along a well-preserved stretch of the historic Route 66 and is the gateway to beautiful Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon. LAKE HAVASU Further down the Colorado River on Arizona’s border, along Highway 95, you will find the world-famous London Bridge, now a permanent resident of Lake Havasu City. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River border of California

and Arizona, this area attracts visitors with its 50 miles of pristine lake and river waterways, laid-back community, and ideal climate for people who love the water and outdoors. Lake Havasu is also home to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and many undeveloped wilderness areas along the Colorado River. YUMA About two hours south of Lake Havasu and Parker, you’ll find Yuma, a frequent stopping point for travelers between Phoenix and San Diego. As one of the easiest spots to cross the Colorado River, Yuma developed a unique and exciting history in the Old West Arizona Territory. Visitors can also enjoy the cool waters of the river nestled in the mountainous Sonoran Desert, play in the sand dunes, and visit many historic sites throughout the city. Whether you visit the famed Yuma Territorial Prison or the Colorado River State Historic Park, you’ll enjoy a visit to the southernmost point on Arizona’s West Coast. Western Arizona is a great place to visit this time of year, when desert temperatures are mild and sunny. The cool Colorado River provides outdoor adventures, rich history, and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each area, and be sure to check LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! northtatumtimes.com

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal

UNCUT GEMS

The Safdie brothers might currently be the best directors at making an audience root for the most irredeemable characters possible. Howie Bling, played incredibly by Adam Sandler, does almost everything wrong - constantly screwing over and hurting his family, friends, and business associates. Knowing all of that, there is something about his charm and mannerisms that make you want him to sink that half court shot. The brothers’ dark comedy and panic attack-esque filmmaking style also shines here in scenes that can make you laugh at even the most horrifying of moments. Bolstered by Daniel Lopatin’s score and a colorful supporting cast, you’ve got an experience that feels like the lost Martin ScorseseRobert De Niro collaboration. While this film likely won’t be for everyone, I highly recommend it.

6 UNDERGROUND

This is Michael Bay without limits and that’s not necessarily good. Imagine his immature humor, over the top action and frantic editing…and then multiply it by 10. Now imagine one-dimensional characters, lazy continuity errors, obnoxious comedy and exploitation of some serious real-world horrors. None of the actors, despite being highly talented, bring anything to the table and Bay confirms that the charm of his insane style wears off after an opening 10-minute car chase scene. At least he avoids exceeding a 2hr and 15 minutes run time.

THE GRUDGE

The most disappointing films are the ones that feel like they waste all of their good qualities. Taking the anthology format of Grudge in a new direction with an R-rating, an interesting director like Nicolas Pesce and a great cast seems like a perfect idea. Unfortunately for the viewers, somewhere something went horribly wrong. There are no characters here, only archetypes (the haunted cops, the soon-to-be parents, etc.) The horror consists of nothing more than jump scares. Overall, the movie doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. The worst part was that somehow, in a series where there was always a sense of dread, grief or trauma, the film continuously pulls punches leaving it flat and almost comedic. While it’s still early in the year, I believe this will be one of 2020’s most underwhelming films.

FEBRUARY 14 The Photograph Fantasy Island Sonic The Hedgehog Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Limited)

1917

Like a horror film, 1917 makes each moment feel like the difference between life and death. The long takes aren’t there just for the sake of showing off, but for Director Sam Mendes and DP Roger Deakins to place you in the shoes of the characters. This film mirrors real life with sudden, pivotal moments that change the course of everything, and everyone effected. The actors mesh perfectly in their roles - particularly the decision to give the minor/ supporting roles to major actors, portraying a sense of importance without taking away from the leads. The production design and looks are also incredible. My favorite nightmare is the detail given to No Man’s Land. As a whole, 1917 was an intense, emotional experience.
