PHOENIX SETS GOAL TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED AN AMBITIOUS NEW GOAL TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) EMISSIONS BY 30 PERCENT below 2012 levels by 2025—cutting carbon pollution from all residents and businesses—continuing the City’s focus on sustainability over the last several years.
“
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “We have made significant progress toward becoming a sustainable city, but there’s still work to do.”
“The council’s vote this week shows we’re charging ahead and beyond our already impressive results in reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the past 10 years,” said Councilwoman Kate
The 30 percent reduction target keeps Phoenix on track to achieve an 80 percent GHG reduction by 2050.
The 30 percent reduction target keeps Phoenix on track to achieve an 80 percent GHG reduction by 2050—a goal that the Council approved in 2016 that also allows Phoenix to exceed the requirements of the Paris Climate Accord. Although the federal government has withdrawn from the accord, last summer Mayor Greg Stanton said the City would remain committed to the agreement’s goals. “Phoenix will continue to lead the way by setting – and beating – ambitious goals that will ultimately benefit our environment and our economy,” said
”
Gallego, chair of the City Council’s Sustainability, Housing, Efficiency and Neighborhoods Subcommittee. “It also reaffirms Phoenix’s role as a home for green business and sustainable innovation.” “This obligation demonstrates that the City of Phoenix is committed to leading the region in tackling climate change, and takes the real issue of global – and local – warming very seriously. Such a goal will undoubtedly continue to cultivate our culture of sustainability as we move toward a more multi-modal
and technologically innovative urban environment,” said Vice Mayor Laura Pastor.
“As we encourage homeowners and businesses to increase the energy efficiency of their homes and buildings, the city must first lead by example in reviewing our own citywide infrastructure. We will study city buildings and facilities to see how we may improve our energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions throughout all operations,” said Councilman Michael Nowakowski. Today, the Council also directed staff to develop a plan to reduce carbon pollution. Possible actions to help the City reach that goal include accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and alternate transportation, significantly increasing trees and shade in Phoenix, improving the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings, and expanding options to purchase clean energy. Last year, the City also adopted a new goal of reducing GHG emissions by 40 percent by 2025 within its own operations (from City-owned buildings and vehicles). The City of Phoenix previously surpassed its goal of a 15 percent GHG reduction by 2015.
The City’s long-term goal is to become carbon neutral. Progress on several City initiatives are keeping Phoenix on track to meeting its goal:
• Phoenix was one of two cities worldwide recognized for taking major climate action. Phoenix was honored with the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Award for the Reimagine Phoenix initiative to divert 40 percent of waste away from the landfill by 2020 and reach zero waste by 2050. • Last fall, the City of Phoenix became one of the first cities to achieve LEED for Cities Platinum certification, the world’s most widely used green building rating program. • Phoenix has become a leading municipality for solar energy, producing 32 megawatts of solar energy through City-sponsored projects. • The City began the city-wide conversion to replace nearly 100,000 city streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights that will cut pollution, save energy and save millions of taxpayer dollars over time. The City of Phoenix encourages residents to share their ideas and comments on potential actions to improve air quality and reduce our carbon pollution at www.coolerphoenix. com. For more information on the City’s sustainability goals and initiatives, visit phoenix.gov/sustainability.

SKY CROSSING: NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT NORTH OF DEER VALLEY BETWEEN BLACK MOUNTAIN AND CAVE CREEK ROAD By Al and Jean Batson THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WITH THE REOPENING OF THE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS (they offer the Desert Ridge Resident Rate for friends and family). Next door is the new Cambria Hotel & Suites, [delayed by over a year after a fire during construction] – along with the new Banner Health who hosted a Grand Opening on January 13. Banner Health is taking new patients for their Internists, a Family Physician and a Dermatologist. Additionally, there is a medically based aesthetician spa for skin care. Question: What’s the new housing development north of Deer Valley between Black Mountain and Cave Creek Road? Answer: SKY CROSSING – Sky Crossing is a new joint venture between two outstanding builders: Pulte Homes and Taylor Morrison.
Approximately 1200 lots will be developed with floor plans that will suit everyone from Millennials to Boomers. A representative from Taylor Morrison indicated that the presales on January 20 could result in signing up pre-qualified buyers for a drawing as demand is expected to be high for all releases as they occur. Their first two phases will be the Discovery and Passage Collections. Discovery will have five floor plans; three of which will be viewable at Lookout Mountain Estates in Phoenix (480-508-0637). The Passages Collection currently has two of their floorplans available for viewing at Northlands Summit in Peoria (623-271-9477). On-site models are anticipated to open in late March. The first completed homes are scheduled for early Fall of this year. These communities will, of course, have many amenities. Check the websites for further details. To clarify if you’re interested in purchasing in Sky Crossing and you
want your Realtor to assist you as your extra eyes and ears – there are two things we should clarify: As Realtors, we can assist our clients when purchasing a new-build through a builder, such as at Sky Crossing BUT, we must be with you on your initial visit to register with you. (We’ve worked several times with buyers wanting to purchase a newbuild; we went with our buyers). There is so much for a Buyer to deal with, not only with the myriads of documents but we also can assist in advising in other ways. Professional eyes and ears can be very beneficial.
(not upgrades). Primarily it is also important to know that the buyer isn’t affected financially in any way by having their Realtor involved. As Realtors, our job is to provide service and guidance to our clients whether we’re representing you as a buyer or a seller; or both. Moving is a major event and we’re all here to make it as easy as possible.

FOUR WAYS BUSINESSES CAN BE MORE CUSTOMER-CENTRIC – AND SUCCESSFUL There’s a lot of talk these days about companies becoming “customer-centric.” It means putting customers at the center of the business. The idea is to build positive consumer experience both before and after the sale, with customer retention and repeat business as the goal. In a highly competitive age, when attracting and retaining customers has never been more vital to business survival, being customercentric takes on added importance. But not all businesses truly put the customer first in the long run, and they might suffer for it. “While ‘customer-centric’ sounds great, the truth is that many of these efforts are nothing more than sophisticated marketing campaigns,” says Sallie Sherman, (www.S4consulting.com), coauthor of Five Keys to Powerful Business Relationships and an expert in growing critical business relationships to create a sustainable, competitive advantage.
and expectations. They view their customers as valuable and build the business around them.” Sherman lists four ways businesses can become more company-centric:
• Put the customer front and center. “Start by thoroughly understanding the customers’ needs and expectations. Then communicate those throughout the organization before building business strategies and plans. Finally, build and implement processes throughout the organization to ensure the company meets or exceeds customers’ expectations,” Sherman says. “This sets customer-centered standards and ensures the customers’ needs and expectations are being met.”
advertisements and marketing questionnaires, build a meaningful, ongoing relationship with them,” Sherman says. “Strive to communicate with them the way they want so you can provide information that meets customers’ expectations. Recognize and reward customer loyalty. The internet has made customer relationships even more important; consumers can easily inform one another about good and bad experiences, influencing a slide or boom in business.”
• Think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to be different. There are always creative ways to take good treatment of customers to a higher level. Make things easier and more appealing for them through catalogs, online ordering, or customizing your products to their needs. • Build customer relationships. It is during problem-solving or Ensure customers feel appreciated dispute-resolution situations that after the initial interaction. “Rather customer loyalty is most often than bombard them with endless impacted. “That’s why listening to
your customers’ needs and being flexible is the key to a great customer experience,” Sherman says.
• Don’t make your employees a distant second. The customers come first, but without good, dependable employees who believe in the work culture, the product and their customers, there is no link to bring in the business. “Employees are the face of the company, and if they’re undervalued it will show up in being uncommitted to serving customers,” Sherman says. “Recognize and reward the efforts of your employees and empower them to grow your company.” “You know companies are customer-centric by the way they perform,” Sherman says. “As customers we get what we need, when and how we expect it, and we genuinely like doing business with them because it is easy to do business with them.”
“Because these marketing campaigns often are so powerful, they can overpromise and actually cause the customer experience to be more frustrating,” says Sherman. Recent research by Deloitte showed that customer-centric companies were more profitable than those not as focused on the customer. As Sherman points out, a company putting in the consistent, genuine effort to keep a customer happy and coming back is often rewarded. “Customer-centric companies understand that being customercentric is a detailed performance game,” Sherman says. “They align every part of the company around their customers’ needs

KIDS’ CORNER
BATTER UP! SPRING TRAINING BASEBALL By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
O
ur family loves to go to baseball games. One of the many great things about living in Arizona is that we can start the season early with baseball Spring Training season! The 2018 Cactus League begins their season on Friday, February 23, running runs through Tuesday, March 27. The league is made up of 15 Major League Baseball teams who play in 10 different baseball stadiums around Arizona. You can get a copy of the full Cactus League schedule on their website: www. cactusleague.com. Fans can purchase tickets to games and find out more about specific team schedules through each team’s web page. Here is a list teams currently competing in the Cactus League and the stadiums where they play. Arizona Diamondbacks: Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Chicago Cubs: Sloan Park, Mesa Chicago White Sox: Camelback Ranch, Glendale Cincinnati Reds: Goodyear Ballpark, Goodyear Cleveland Indians: Goodyear Ballpark, Goodyear Colorado Rockies: Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Kansas City Royals: Surprise Stadium, Surprise
Los Angeles Angels: Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe Los Angeles Dodgers: Camelback Ranch, Glendale Milwaukee Brewers: Maryvale Baseball Park, Phoenix Oakland Athletics: Hohokam Stadium, Mesa San Diego Padres: Peoria Sports Complex, Peoria San Francisco Giants: Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale Seattle Mariners: Peoria Sports Complex, Peoria Texas Rangers: Surprise Stadium, Surprise A FUN, KID-FRIENDLY SPORT Baseball is a very kid-friendly sport and the Spring Training games are no exception. With our fantastic Phoenix spring weather, getting the kids out of the house and into the sunshine is a great reason to attend a game. Tickets are very modestly priced, much less than the cost of attending a regular season game. Also outfield stadium and lawn seating is available – a great option for little ones who want to get up and move around. PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME Because the games take place during the day and in outdoor stadiums, be sure to bring sunscreen, water and a hat! Prepare ahead for meals and snacks. There are vendors in the stadium, but check the schedule

and the stadium website to see what they have available at the game you plan to attend. Also check out maps for the stadium to make sure you park in the right spots. Like any major event, parking lots and stadiums are crowded places, so plan ahead to minimize chaos and set your expectations about how long driving, parking, and lines will take.
SEE THE PLAYERS UP CLOSE Another great reason to catch a Cactus League game is that the stadiums are smaller, which means your can see the action and the players up close! Players take time to sign autographs for kids, chat with fans and get their photos taken. Attending spring training games is a great way to learn about the players, teams and the sport of baseball in general. Take time to teach your kids about the sport. The rules, scoring and play are great lessons in math and science, while having a great time learning.
George Will mused, “Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.” Well, baseball is a game, but a fantastic game for the whole family to enjoy and watch. We at Ladybug’s Blog happen to think very highly of the Grand Canyon, too. Games are all about having fun, so make your trip to a Cactus League spring training baseball game a fun adventure, and a lifelong memory for your whole family. Be sure to check out Ladybug’s Blog for more fun things to do outside with kids everywhere in Arizona!

Quality of sleep directly affects our quality of life including energy, stress levels and overall health. Recent medical studies have shown lack of sleep can lead to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even possibly Alzheimer’s, also early mortality. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School does continual studies and research to understand these issues. UNDERSTANDING RESTORATIVE SLEEP It is Stages Three & Four: This stage is the beginning of deep sleep, as the brain begins
producing slower delta waves. You won’t experience any eye movement or muscle activity. At this point, it becomes a little harder for you to be awakened, because your body becomes less responsive to outside stimuli. The brain produces even more delta waves and you move into an even deeper, more restorative stage of sleep next. It’s most difficult to wake up during this stage. This is when the body repairs muscles and tissues, stimulates growth and development, boosts immune function, and builds up energy for the next day. It is important to spend as much time as possible in stages three, four and the final REM stage. Disturbances during the night, even changing sleeping positions put you back in stage one or two. It takes time to get back into restorative stages. It is important to create the

perfect environment for a quality night’s sleep.
CREATING THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT Take a look at your sleeping surface, your mattress. It should be supportive yet comfortable. If it is older than 8 years, it should be replaced. Not all mattresses wear out in 8 years but our bodies and support requirements change. You spend a third of the day on that mattress, consider that when setting your budget to buy a new one. Use a good quality mattress protector. Your mattress is a breeding ground for dust mites and a good quality mattress protector will prevent that and the allergens that follow. Quality comfortable sheets, blankets and pillow. Your pillow selection is as important as your mattress. The pillow provides 30% of overall spinal alignment. Most mattress stores carry a selection of pillows. Consider buying your pillow and mattress as a matched set. Find a pillow you like and use it to test mattresses. Change your pillow selection, if needed, as you narrow down your mattress choice. Take a look at your bedroom. It should be comfortable, quiet, dark and cool. Your bedroom should be used for sleeping and sex only. Your brain will associate the bedroom for sleeping and sex, making it easier to fall asleep. Remove the TV, and no computers, tablets or cell phones should be allowed. Forget the nightcap. Alcohol may act as a sedative and help you fall asleep faster but disturbs quality sleep later during the night. Alcohol may also cause restless leg syndrome and sleep walking. Try to forgo watching TV or using
computers, tablets or cell phones for one to two hours before bed. The bright light stops melatonin production, melatonin helps us sleep. If not, turn the screens brightness down as much as possible. Try going to bed and waking at the same time every day. This also trains the brain for sleep. Don’t sleep in on the weekends. Sleep is not a bank that can withdrawn from and added back to. ENJOY THE BENEFITS Going to bed and getting up in the morning will become the most enjoyable parts of your day. Relish the comfortable environment, you have created and the way you feel in the morning. With quality sleep appreciate renewed energy levels as your stress level decreases. You will find a better overall quality of life. With a clearer mind it will be easier to understand and retain information throughout your day. Written by David Lantz, Owner of The Mattress Place, 28248 N. Tatum Blvd. Cave Creek Az. 85331. David has over 30 years’ experience in the bedding industry, countless hours of training and studies surrounding sleep and mattress construction. His extensive knowledge helps assist customers find a mattress that is supportive yet comfortable for a better night’s sleep.

WHY EVERY MAN SHOULD GO TO A BARBERSHOP By Barbershop Jack
Y
ou wash it, brush it, comb it, style it, and put stuff in it. And when it comes down to who cuts it, should a guy go to a barbershop or to a salon?
Barbers come from an ancient and revered line of professionals who not only provided shaves & haircuts, but also once served as dentists and surgeons. The barbershop has historically been a community gathering place for publicly sharing opinions and debating the topics of the day. By contrast, a hair salon is where you go to confide in one person while getting your hair cut and styled. Generally speaking, haircuts at a barbershop tend to cost less than at a salon. But why? Is the haircut better? Are their scissors sharper? It’s because salons offer an air of exclusivity, featuring upscale
décor and a primo location. To set up shop in an exclusive salon, hair stylists pay a higher rent for their workspace. Because of the higher rent, they need to charge more for haircuts. The haircut isn’t necessarily better. It just comes in a fancier package. But what if you could get the exact same haircut for $40-$50 less? That’s one of the upsides of going to a barbershop.
While many barbershops offer appointments, the real magic happens in the waiting area amongst the walk-in clients. It’s all about sports, jokes, and shootin’ the breeze. Grab a seat and you’ll hear some of the best one-liners ever. Whether you’re an active participant (or an innocent bystander), the free entertainment is actually quite priceless. Salon stylists often attend trade shows and take special classes to learn the latest cutting, styl-
ing, and coloring techniques. But if you’re not the kind of guy who’s interested in color weaves, hair extensions, or straight-razor haircuts, you end up paying for expertise that’s of no value to you. You’re better off going to a barber who specializes in men’s haircuts & shaves. That’s the kind of expertise a guy needs. If you’re wondering about that funky smell, it’s the aroma of all the hair coloring, toner, bleach, and other assorted chemicals found in a hair salon. Not exactly pleasant. The smells of a barbershop are much simpler and more pleasing: a little hot shave lather and a touch of blue Barbicide (where the combs are soaking). In an instant you’re reminded of
a trip to the barber with your dad back in the day. You climbed up into that huge leather chair, on top of the world. And for 30 minutes, a boy got to be a man for a little while. You won’t find memories like that in a hair salon. If you’ve been going to a barbershop, then all of this makes perfect sense. But if you’re a regular at a salon, you might want to try the barbershop experience. Who knows…you might get hooked (and end up with a little more money in your wallet). Barbershop Jack is a full-service barbershop in North Phoenix, offering haircuts, shaves, and men’s grooming services. Appointments available at barbershopjack.com.

ARE YOU READY FOR A FUN DATE IDEA?
JUST THE RIGHT MIX OF ROMANTIC, SILLY, ADVENTUROUS, AND CHILL
I
thought of doing a photo challenge date night a year or two ago, but never got around to it. When we finally decided to try it out, I Googled to see what had already been done, but couldn’t find much and definitely nothing quite like I envisioned. So we decided to put one together that anyone can use! Why is this photo scavenger list better than others? Sure, you can find all sorts of photo scavenger hunt prompts across the web, but none of them are well-optimized for a date. When you’re on a date you want to have fun, get to know each other better, not be rushed, and probably not have to interact with others too much. These prompts are focused on facilitating just that. A FEW TIPS: • First look over all the prompts to plot out your date itinerary as it makes the most sense. We would have easily been able to do everything in the mall where we were, but you could also drive to several different locations or even park downtown and walk around. • This is a date you could easily stretch out all day, but could also do in a couple hours if you order it right. Be creative in doubling up the prompts if you’re short on time. • If you can, take your time to enjoy each activity – it’s really just a simple structure to make a normal date a little more interesting. • If you’re using your phone camera, use the back one so the pictures will be nice enough to print out for a scrapbook or maybe even your wall, if you happen to capture something you especially like.
which we’d technically never eaten that either of us could recall. We had every intention of trying something very different, but ended up not having time.
5. UNEXPECTED PROP INTEGRATION
8. BUY SOMETHING FOR YOUR DATE – ON SALE/CLEARANCE OR UNDER $5
2. YOUR DATE PICKS SOMETHING FOR YOU TO TRY ON
We wandered into these stores for practical purposes – I was looking for shoes for a wedding. I had thought we’d run across funny masks or something, but these were still different from our norm. 3. POSE WITH A MANNEQUIN
David pointed out how ironic the sign above his head was, and he picked this one out for me to pose with… You could obviously get a lot more fun and creative than we did. 4. SPELL SOMETHING MEANINGFUL
Here’s a little glimpse into our date.
These happened very organically and were the first pictures we took other than letter pictures. I was actually a little worried that someone would notice us since it was right out front, and they wouldn’t let us into the mall, haha. The funniest thing was that David put this cone on his head before I was ready with the camera, so he was just standing there for a bit, LOL! 6. INSIDE JOKE OR SOMETHING THAT REPRESENTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP SOMEHOW
Since we weren’t familiar with the mall, we weren’t sure what we were going to be able to find to represent us, but then inspiration struck when we saw these rocking chairs. We’re all about finding a way to chill pretty much anywhere we are in our travels and in life, with a pinch of quirky for good measure. 7. EAT SOMETHING LADY AND THE TRAMP STYLE
1. TRY SOMETHING NEW – FOOD OR ACTIVITY
We were so hungry and everything in the food court was pretty American, so we ended up getting Popeye’s,
white like I’m sure you’ve probably seen.
Your last name if you’re married, first names/nicknames, anniversary date, etc. You probably want to make sure to decide at the beginning of the date what you’re going to spell out so you have time to spot letters you like. We got some extras so we’d have a few to pick from. If you especially enjoy photography and have the time, you could also find objects that look like letters and make them all black and
I love churros, but I wasn’t even in the mood to eat something sweet. We were running out of light, so this was kind of a last resort shot.
You can buy whatever you want for your date, as long as it’s in your budget, we just want to keep things inexpensive for us. 9. WILD CARD • Search #datenight or #love pose or #SelfieScavengerDate or some such to find a couple pose/scene to copy, just beware of stupid pics showing up sometimes • Chalk pose – use chalk to draw a speech bubble or some props on sidewalk/pavement and put yourselves in the picture • Find a coin with a significant date – birth year, first kiss, first date, wedding, etc. you can turn it into jewelry later or something else fun • One line drawing game – the first person starts with one mark and you keep taking turns making one line, without consulting each other what it is, until you can’t think of anything else to add. Congrats, you’ve just made some memorable art. 10. KISSING
Extra points for creativity with or in front of something interesting. I know it looks like we’re not in love, but you can’t see that out of the frame I have my hands on his waist at least. We were actually trying not to completely cover up the mall statue. This date was SO much fun and we would LOVE to know if you try it out! Article courtesty of www.ticoandtina. com

FOUR SIMPLE ACTIONS TO ORGANIZE AND START YOUR YEAR OFF RIGHT FIVE MINUTES – CREATE TWO FILES TO LESSEN TAX-TIME STRESS Tax documents will start to arrive in the next few weeks. Get ahead of the document deluge and create two files. Label one 2017 and the other 2018. Keep things simple for now. It’s not about organizing your tax documents; it’s making sure you have a go-to spot to file them when they arrive. Come tax time, you’ll know right where everything is. Since you have your 2018 file on-hand, your receipts and other documents can be easily filed away throughout the year.

A professional organizer advocating for more paper? Yes, but only when it comes to taxes. Keep your documents easily accessible. You won’t have to worry about tech issues from a computer on the fritz to a lost USB drive or misbehaving printer. Scan and back up your documents if that’s how you prefer to keep records. But for ease and speed, my money is on paper. 20 MINUTES – CORRAL YOUR MEDICAL COSTS Some taxpayers can itemize medical costs. If that’s the case and you haven’t kept receipts for each co-pay, prescription, etc. you can obtain a statement from your provider(s) detailing your out-of-pocket expenses. If you have online access to your insurance/prescription provider, you may be able to obtain the same information yourself with just a few clicks. Make this request sooner than later to beat the rush of requests as tax time nears. Also, start to utilize that 2018 tax folder. Make it a habit to file receipts as soon as you are home.
Providing logical, caring solutions for: Ants Rats Roaches Pigeons Scorpions Termites
15 MINUTES – CLEAR OUT THE MEDICINE CABINET The beginning of the year is the perfect time to
go through your medicine cabinet. Take everything out and check the expiration date or every bottle, box, and tube. If it iss expired, dispose of it properly. The FDA advises to mix expired/unused prescriptions and medical products with something undesirable such as used coffee grounds, cat litter or dirt. Place everything in a container, seal and dispose of it in the trash. As you put everything back into the cabinet, consider grouping like-items such as cough and cold, allergies, wound care, etc. Take note of anything you need to replace. If you discarded something that still had quite a bit left, buy a smaller amount this time around. FIVE MINUTES – PREPARE FOR SWIM SEASON While you are in the mode of checking expiration dates, gather up your stash of sunscreen and check that it will still provide protection. Anything past a printed expiration date should be tossed. If you can’t find a date, heed the advice of the Mayo Clinic and discard anything more than three years old or that has noticeably changed color or consistency. The New Year is a time of resolutions and creating new habits. Make these actions part of your February and avoid some aches and pains come April (taxes!), June (the sun!) or any time of year. F
ebruary – a month to honor our Presidents on Presidents Day and each other for Valentines Day.
Everyone understands that Realtors are there to protect and represent you in buying and selling your homes. Did you also know that by volunteer work and donation, we also support home owners’ tax deductions and capital gains exclusions? We’re a large and powerful force working across this great country to protect those things. Realtors, as members of the national, state and local Board of Realtors we belong to, voluntarily support and contribute to the PAC (Political Action Committees) designed to watch the gate, so to speak, to protect homeowners and prospective homeowners. As you know on 12/27/17, the President signed a $1.5 trillion tax overhaul expected to trigger tax cuts for most Americans next year. NAR (National Association of Realtors) worked tirelessly with members of the House-Senate conference committee to help educate them on how to improve the final bill. After the vote, NAR President Elizabeth Mendenhall issued the following statement: “The results are mixed. We saved the exclusion for capital gains on the sale of a home and protected the mortgage
interest deduction for second homes. As with any legislation, there will be things to work out.
• Capital gains exclusion. According to the NAR (National Association of Realtors) in a huge win for current and prospective homeowners, current law is left in place on the capital gains exclusion of $250,000 for an individual and $500,000 for married couples on the sale of a home. Both the House and the Senate had sought to make it much harder to qualify for the exclusion but…it stays. • Mortgage interest deduction. The maximum mortgage amount for households deducting their mortgage interest has been decreased to $750,000 from the current $1 million limit. The House bill sought a reduction to $500,000. • State and local tax deductions. Both property taxes and state and local income taxes remain deductible, although with a combined limit of $10,000. Both the House and Senate bills sought to eliminate the state and local income tax deduction altogether.” While no legislation is perfect and often measures are taken to tweak them, Realtors are proud to be a part of the organizations that help protect our benefits as homeowners. MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS Reviewed by A.D. Beal
THE POST
The true story of The Washington Post’s release of the Pentagon Papers. What’s great about The Post is, despite Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks getting top billing, it really feels like an ensemble piece showing how different members of the Washington Post’s team contributed to the story. It helps that director Steven Spielberg chose great actors like Michael Stuhlbarg and Bob Odenkirk for even the smallest of supporting roles. Everyone gets at least one scene where they’re the central character, and I love that. In addition, I appreciated how Spielberg and editors Michael Kahn & Sarah Broshar present conversations by not needing to switch back and forth between the different characters talking at several points in the film. The aspect ratio and film stock that was used to shoot the movie also give it a timely look. I highly recommend it.
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD
The story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and his mother’s attempts to save him, with his grandfather, J. Paul Getty, refusing to help pay for the ransom. A lot of the attention around Ridley Scott’s new film has been about Christopher Plummer replacing Kevin Spacey just a month before the film’s release. Plummer did give a good performance, showing someone who was cold-hearted but didn’t scream “I’m an evil businessman”, which was something I was worried about when I saw Spacey in the original trailer. But in terms of truly great performances, Michelle Williams and Romain Duris are the most notable, the latter managing to stand out in the star-studded cast, making the kidnapper feel like a real human instead of a fictional villain. Scott and his regular DOP Dariusz Wolski give us several beautiful shots. Unfortunately, Charlie Plummer, who plays Paul Getty, isn’t given much to do, even though he really is trying with his performance, and Mark Wahlberg doesn’t bring anything
different compared to past performances. The film, despite some really good scenes, suffers from many moments where the pace drags. It’s a bit of a disappointment in my opinion, given the talent and the source material.
INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY
Elise Rainier returns to her childhood home when someone calls for her help. The best thing about The Last Key for me was the design of the central monster Key Face, played by the amazing Javier Botet, and Lin Shaye is great as always. Unfortunately, everything else doesn’t work for me. The comic relief in Elise’s sidekicks Specks and Tucker is very forced and awkward, and her brother and nieces don’t get much screen time to get us to care about them. There are out-of-nowhere romances and plot reveals. We suddenly are stuck with one of Elise’s nieces, Imogen, for a decent part of the film, and the scares are very generic. If this is the last of the Insidious films (which I highly doubt, given the box office numbers), it’s a very disappointing end.

PROUD MARY
A hit woman takes care of a young boy after killing his father. Proud Mary should work, as Taraji P. Henson owns the role as the title character. Unfortunately, despite that and the 70s feel, the film is let down by mediocre direction, poor editing, and an all-around rushed feel (the film is only 1 hour and 28 minutes). We don’t get to spend much time to see how the young boy, Danny, was affected by his father’s death, as the film skips ahead one year immediately after the killing. The rest of the cast doesn’t fare much better, with even Danny Glover looking tired throughout the film. The sound mixing is also atrocious, and the use of music is strange, going from an upbeat 70’s song to a sad orchestral score within seconds. As good as it is to see a woman of color as the lead in an action film, it’s a shame it couldn’t be backed by a better script and director.

7 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE PUTTING YOUR HOME UP FOR SALE SCOTTSDALE, CAVE CREEK, CAREFREE - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money.
This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”.
