I
n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work. Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer. Technological innovation and scaledup production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow. And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according
to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year. Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. Depending on how soon your system is installed, you could even secure your 26 percent federal tax credit in time to use it early next year. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The “People’s Open” Tees Off Next Month; Tickets on Sale Now

THE 2022 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN WILL TAKE PLACE FEBRUARY 7-13 AT TPC SCOTTSDALE. “The People’s Open” has been named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA TOUR four times in the past seven years to acknowledge the tournament’s legendary status as one the most unique events in golf. The 2022 edition will mark the 87th playing of the event and the 13th with Waste Management as title sponsor. A field of 132 players will vie for the $8.2 million purse, the $1,476,000 firstplace check, and 500 FedExCup points. PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, February 4, to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open. Tournament Chairman Dr. Michael Golding recently announced that defending champion and four-time Major winner Brooks Koepka and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama are the latest to commit to play in the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The duo, who are both twotime WM Phoenix Open winners and currently rank in the Top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings, have combined to win four WM Phoenix Open titles in the last seven years. Koepka and Matsuyama will join World No. 1 golfer Jon Rahm and World No. 6 golfer Justin Thomas, who were among the first to commit to “The People’s Open” last month. The entertainment venue opens at 3:30 p.m. and closes at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The Free Itty Bitty Open on January 15 Introduces the Littlest of Golfers to the Sport THE JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA (JGAA) WILL HOST THE ITTY BITTY OPEN ON JANUARY 15 AT NUMEROUS VALLEY-WIDE LOCATIONS. IT IS OPEN TO ALL YOUNGSTERS AGES 3-5 YEARS OLD. The free event has three clinic times per location starting a 9, 10 and 11 a.m. where juniors and their parents will learn the basics skills of golf taught by qualified PGA and LPGA professionals. After the clinics, the kids will participate in fun-filled, non-competitive golf games and tournaments. Each golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs, balls, a bag, and a visor; participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer. “The Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” says Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “It’s always fun to see so many kids having such a good time. It’s very exciting to think that a three-year-old kid attending
the Itty Bitty Open will likely still be playing the game for decades to come. We’re honored to help them begin that journey.” A special contest will be held at each session for the “Best Dressed Golfer and Caddie Team.” Anything goes for the contest: classic golf fashion; contemporary golf fashion; or any unique golf duds that may come to mind. The City of Phoenix recently announced the launch of a new service through an app called ‘MyPHX311’ that allows residents to pay their City Services Bill, report quality-of-life issues, and request city services.
T
oday it’s common for Americans to spend two, three or even four decades in retirement. This means people have ample time to relax and achieve a bucket list of dreams. However, the flip side is that retirees need to ensure they have enough savings to last through their lifetime. One complicating factor is that inflation is a fact of life, and it can result in meaningfully higher expenses over time. As you’ve likely seen in recent headlines, inflation rates are the highest they’ve been in many years. Living costs have risen 5% over the past 12 months ending in June, based on the Consumer Price Index 1 – significantly higher than the 1-2% annual increases we’ve gotten used to seeing over the past decade. Inflation creates challenges for all consumers, but it can be particularly difficult for those who are retired and living on a limited income. Higher inflation can throw off the assumptions for regular expenses reflected in your retirement plan. It’s unknown whether this uptick in living costs will persist, but you should prepare for the impacts of inflation regardless. Here are a few things to know and do:
Keep it in perspective Today’s inflation rate of 5% is high by recent standards, but nowhere near a record. We may be a long way from seeing an extended period of high inflation like we had in the 1970s and 1980s, where inflation in the United States peaked at 13.5%. Since 1982, inflation has only been higher than 5% in one calendar year (1991) until now.2 While another decade-long inflation threat is unlikely, living costs in the near-term may continue to rise at a fast pace.

Adjust your investments Is your portfolio properly positioned to keep pace with inflation? It may make sense to keep a portion of your assets invested in stocks. Over the past 30 years, the Standard & Poor’s 500, a benchmark of U.S. large cap stock market performance, gained, on average, more than 10% annually3, well above the 2.3% average annual inflation rate over that same period.4 Earning higher returns on money you may need 10 to 20 years in the future should help it grow sufficiently to meet inflated income needs at that time, but a large portion of your portfolio should still be invested more conservatively to protect it from market volatility. Look at other options to improve your position If you are experiencing financial strains as living costs rise, you may want to consider other options, such as a part-time job or consulting. Even in retirement, it is important to be flexible to react to changing circumstances that may affect even your best-laid plans. “The City of Phoenix is constantly innovating to best serve our residents. This app will allow for quicker, more efficient service to meet the needs of every Phoenician. I’m proud our city listens to our residents and adapts to the changing environment to allow for flexible, creative solutions,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The new mobile app is a complement to the recently upgraded version “PHX At Your Service” web portal (now Phoenix. gov/myPHX311). The myPHX311 app is optimized for smartphones but can also be used on tablets. With this new digital interactive experience, residents can send reports directly to the City’s website. The app allows community members to provide city staff with pictures, videos, descriptions, and the location when reporting an issue. “The launch of this application ensures
our residents, business owners and community members have quick, easy access to city services,” says City Manager Jeff Barton. “Now that much of our lives has gone virtual, it’s important to have a city services app that makes sharing and retrieving information easy for everyone.” Once the app is downloaded (Phoenix. gov/app), users can create an account to access most of the features available. Users can also proceed as a guest. The app is also available in Spanish. Users can search job postings, review street closures and neighborhood programs. Each item is linked directly to the Phoenix.govwebsite, making it easy to follow up on service requests and stay up to date on all the resources Phoenix has to offer. The MyPHX311 mobile app is available for download on Android and iOS. The public should continue to report emergencies by calling 911. Emergency or urgent service requests should not be reported on the app. To report water or sewer-related emergencies such as a broken water main, fire hydrant, or water service line (between a water meter and the street) or sewer backups, call 602-261-8000. Issues that occur outside of Phoenix’s jurisdiction should be reported to the appropriate agency or organization.

City News Phoenix Road Safety Action Plan In Need of Resident Input THE CITY OF PHOENIX’S STREET TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT’S MISSION IS TO, “PROVIDE FOR THE SAFE, EFFICIENT AND CONVENIENT MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND GOODS WITHIN THE CITY AND SUPPORT CITYWIDE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN PHOENIX.” Understanding the importance of safety as a core function of the department, and due to recent data trending in a negative direction, Phoenix is investing in a comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan (RSAP) that will further the city’s current efforts and provide a framework and key strategies for safety enhancements citywide. To do so, they are asking for resident input. “The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is working to improve safety for all users of its roadways and is developing a Road Safety Action Plan,” explains Gregg Bach, senior public information officer. “City staff is currently facilitating the public engagement phase of that process. Community members are encouraged to provide input that will help shape the plan by taking an online interactive survey.” To participate and take the virtual survey, visit phoenix.gov/streets/ roadsafety. The survey will remain live through next month. WHAT WILL THE ROAD SAFETY ACTION PLAN DO? • Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of data and current conditions. • Establish a clear vision and mission to unite residents, stakeholders, and staff
across multiple city departments with a common goal. • Determine a High Injury Network (HIN) that identifies problem locations and helps determine solutions and prioritization. • Create new and modernize existing safety evaluation tools. • Provide a system of recommendations that respond to data and public input, and connect to the four E’s of Traffic Safety: Evaluation, Engineering, Enforcement, and Education. NEXT STEPS The interactive, virtual survey is now available to Phoenix residents until February. The feedback given during that period will help the City of Phoenix identify safety concerns and priorities for roadway users. The information will then be gathered into the RSAP, which will be complete later this year. Dale Chihuly is known for revolutionizing glass with immersive, large-scale installations around the world. The interplay of Chihuly’s work with architecture has been core to his practice since studying interior design at University of Washington in the 1960s. This approach is a fascinating aspect of the artist’s work, with notable installations placed across cities, such as Venice during Chihuly Over Venice, in historic sites like the ancient Citadel in the Old City of Jerusalem for Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000, and in response to architectural environments such as the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. “It is a pleasure to return to the Sonoran Desert with a new exhibition. Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Carol Bailin. I’VE LIVED IN DESERT RIDGE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The Aviano community is one of the most connected neighborhoods in which I’ve lived. From the block parties to clubhouse coffees to fireworks on the 4th of July, these are homes, not just houses. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES... A myriad of things depending on the day as I am now retired after more than 40 years teaching, most of which I spent as an English teacher at Horizon High School. On most days, you can find me playing tennis at the Aviano clubhouse before coffee and the Price is Right or Young and the Restless, or playing pickleball before heading to see my granddaughters, who live just north of Desert Ridge. MY FAMILY... Includes my oldest child, Alison, who is
a local PR gal and travel writer (and I get to be her travel research buddy often); my middle child, Erica, who works at ASU and is mom to my two granddaughters and wife to my fabulous son-in-law, Peter; and my youngest child, Randy, who works in sales. I am also very close to my three sisters and am widowed 19 years now. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS... Marco Polo! No, neither the pool game nor the actual historical figure. Marco Polo is an app where you can make a group and send video messages to each other all day long. I have one with all the women in my family as well as silly ones for video discussions of everything from Bachelor Nation to soap operas to holiday plans. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A teacher or an attorney. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Bridge Over Troubled Water. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My mom. Though I lost her in 1994, she is with me every day. A single mother of four daughters at a time when not many women were doing it on their own, she ensured each of us graduated college and put us on a path for full, happy lives. She was tough as nails, but one of the funniest, strongest people ever to grace this earth. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Probably something my daughter Erica did. She is like our own personal Saturday Night Live. THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… Waking up and having breakfast with my grandkids and daughter, Erica, then hopping on a plane to a wine country with Alison – likely Sonoma or Napa – for a few tastings, followed by watching Notre Dame beat USC and then a fabulous

“Crystal Ball” Real Estate Projections For 2022 By Holly Henbest, Realtor
D
oes the new year have you thinking about your real estate goals? Perhaps buying, selling, investing or all the above? If so, it might be good to be aware of some predictions for 2022 in the world of real estate. While 2021 may be remembered as a whirlwind of multiple offers, bidding wars, increased prices, record-breaking sales, and quick sales, you’re probably wondering if 2022 may bring a change. When it comes to home prices, we are seeing economists and news outlets projecting home prices to grow between 3% - 14% (depending on geographic location). So, what about Arizona? Home price increases in Arizona for 2022 may range between 7% - 13%. While opinions vary on the amount of increase, there seems to be a consensus that prices will continue to go up, yet not as significantly as in 2021. It is also predicted that our shortage of inventory will be the primary factor affecting the continuing increases in pricing. The supply shortage and demand increase are the crux of the issue. On the other hand, locally we will see some additional inventory hit our immediate area next year with the homes on the East side of Desert Ridge being built. Homes are under construction and already selling at Talinn at Desert Ridge, and builders include Shea, D.R. Horton, and Pulte. Our supply and demand issue in Arizona will also continue to be impacted by increased population as Arizona is predicted to remain a geographic hot spot with relocation of out-of-state buyers continuing. Between our cost of living, weather, job availability and businesses moving here, we will continue to attract out-of-state buyers. When it comes to getting multiple offers and bidding wars, we expect to continue to see that trend. However, we’ve already

seen a decline in the volume of offers on properties since last spring. Last spring it wasn’t unusual to receive well over 20 offers on a home, and now we’re typically receiving five to 10. The lower the price, the more offers typically received and the higher the price, the fewer offers received, but it’s unusual to only get one offer. In addition to prices continuing to rise, we also predict a rise in interest rates. While we expect rates to increase in 2022, the increases will likely be modest. We certainly can’t suggest buying now versus later because interest rates are rising, but the combination of increased interest rates and home sale prices do compute to a more expensive real estate cost in the months ahead. A lot of people ask us when they should buy and when they should sell. There is always a desire to “time” the market to try to sell high and buy low. We always say that if you’re buying and selling in the same timeframe, then you’re buying and selling in the same market. Therefore, if you’re waiting for the price of your home to increase, the price of the home you’re going to buy is likely also increasing. We suggest that if you plan to be both buying and selling, the best time to likely do so is when it’s best for you, all things considered. If you’re only buying and not selling, then sooner would be better than later because prices and interest rates will continue to increase. If you’re only selling and perhaps moving out of state, then at this point any time may be a good time. While we wish we truly held a crystal ball and could predict the future, we can’t. We can only take in the information we see and hear about from various sources around us, combined with our hands-on experiences. At this point in time, my confidence in the market is strong. Arizona is a desired destination, supply is low, demand is high, and we are a long way away from builders catching up to our demand for
homes. Builders stopped building during the recession and, although they started applying for permits to build, the real impact of building didn’t hit until 2019; that puts us about eight to nine years behind on building. There is still a lot of catching up to do with just creating enough homes and infrastructure to support our growing population. It’s also important to note that news regarding real estate is always generic by city or state, but the data that is most important to you will be specific to your neighborhood. Even general news about Desert Ridge, Tatum Highlands or Tatum Ranch can be misleading because the difference in supply and demand can vary greatly between the individual neighborhoods in

Clean Colonic:
Building a business from the bottom up

arolyn Berry, owner of Clean Colonic, has always been passionate about helping people. But it wasn’t until her own health issues and years of suffering that she turned to colonics for the answer to unlocking the mystery of her own health – leading her down the path to becoming a successful business owner today. Berry is the proud owner of three Clean Colonic locations and has been in business five years. Her business locations can be found in Tempe, Phoenix/ Scottsdale, and Fountain Hills. Prior to owning her own company, Berry, a competitive women’s doubles sand volleyball player, was a massage therapist for 15 years. She then took a corporate job managing spas in a fitness center for nearly eight years where she developed systems and helped grow the business. After leaving that role, she wrote a book titled “I’m Happy. How Did I Get Here?” that included a program to lead people from chaos to happiness. And while happy, Berry was struggling with life-impacting health issues. “I had a lot of food allergies and was allergic to almost all foods. For example, I ate cheese pizza once and had to go to the ER! In fact, I had to walk around with liquid Benadryl in case my stomach swelled up,” she recalls. “I also had a lot of problems with my uterus. I had cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. My doctor recommended that I get a hysterectomy because I had been suffering with these issues for more than 20 years. Instead, I opted to look for other solutions.”

“A friend suggested that I get a colonic. Even though I didn’t think they were connected, I was desperate to find some relief,” Berry continues. “After seven sessions, the very next month I had no issues with my uterus – no cramps or pain. My stomach went down and, when I went back to the doctor, I had no more cysts and the adenomyosis was gone. Today, I have no more problems with my cycle. I also now have no food allergies and can eat anything. In fact, my favorite thing on the menu to try is truffle mac and cheese!” Because of this amazing, life changing experience, Berry took a new career direction and became dedicated to helping people through colon hydrotherapy. “I never thought I’d be in this business, let alone have three locations,” she says. “But it’s very satisfying to educate people on other ways to assist their body; not just for constipation and weight loss, but for other issues they may have. More and more research is coming out that everything starts in the gut — and I believe it.” Berry opened her first location in Tempe because the California native was living in the area at the time. “I started with just one device in one room,” she says. But a short two years later, she was so busy that she made the decision to move into her own clinic, bought two more devices, and was then approached with an opportunity to open a Phoenix/Scottsdale location. “Two months later, and with three more devices, I opened our second location on Tatum and Thunderbird.” The location in Fountain Hills soon followed, and she is now branching into working with the lymphatic system by offering lymph treatments with a frequency-based device called the Lymphstar. This new modality fits her “healing from the inside out” goal to a tee. She continues to help her clients discover the health benefits with this combination of treatment and colon hydrotherapy. For people that are experiencing gastrointestinal issues, and even ones that aren’t, hydrotherapy is said to work wonders. “More and more people are realizing from word of mouth all the other aspects it can help with,” Berry says. “I get a lot of people who come in and have no issues; they just wanted to try it because they heard about it. bit of waste in the large intestine. “That is simply toxic and unhealthy — it’s best to have it as clean as possible,” she adds. While the first several sessions generally serve to clear out contents, and clean the pockets and walls of the colon, the real benefit comes after about ten to 12 sessions, which Berry refers to as a “gut reset.” Aiming to provide only the best services for her clients, Clean Colonic follows the manufacturer recommendations for cleanliness and the treatment protocol. “I use everything they recommend for cleaning, supplies, nozzles, etc.,” she says. “The device we use is registered with the FDA and is a class two medical device.” Berry and her staff are highly trained to ensure each session provides a clean, sanitary, discreet, and comfortable experience for the client. Understanding that the process can sometimes feel daunting, she encourages people to view the short video on her website that walks potential clients through the process. She runs her business with the goal to provide the utmost privacy to each patient and ensure that they are always comfortable. Patients are in a private room and each session lasts about 45 minutes. A trained and certified colon hydrotherapist is always nearby to monitor the process and provide the patient with any assistance or anything they need to ensure their comfort. For those that are squeamish about the idea of this type of service, there is no one that understands that more than Berry herself. “I didn’t want to do it myself,” she admits. However, once she tried it, she says, “It was life-changing for me. That’s why I am in this business. Everyone could benefit from a colonic.” Berry aims to continue to grow and bring awareness to the community, while maintaining the integrity of colon hydrotherapy. “I want people to try it, even if they don’t have any gastrointestinal issues. And I’d love to be the clinic to help. Filing Taxes Soon? Consider Utilizing the Arizona Tax Credit Donation to Benefit CCUSD Schools By Cort Monroe, Ed.D., CCUSD Superintendent

appy New Year! Have you ever heard of the Arizona Tax Credit Donation? This is an easy way to support the students, schools, and programs in the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD).
It benefits qualified activities or qualified programs at $400 for married couples filing jointly and, for individual taxpayers, the limit is $200. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Any individual (parent or not) can contribute to the school of his/her choice to help fund qualified activities or qualified programs and receive a tax credit from the state. Contributions are donated directly to schools.
A tax credit is different from a tax deduction because it is an actual credit against the income tax imposed upon an individual. Q. What public schools/grades are eligible for the credit? A. Public schools that provide instruction in grades K-12 are eligible for the credit. Preschools do not qualify for the credit. Q. What are some qualified activities or qualified programs? A. Extracurricular activities, character education programs, standardized testing fees for college credit, preparation courses for standardized testing, the career and technical education industry certification assessment, and CPR training.
An Arizona tax law (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) allows individuals or married couples to contribute funds to a public school and receive a tax credit. Donors can reduce the amount owed on their state income taxes by up to $400 for contributions to support qualified activities or qualified programs at any Arizona public school.
Q. What are character education programs? A. A character education program is a program defined in ARS 15-719. Under this statute each district may develop its own course of study for each grade. At a minimum, the character education program must include instruction in the definition and application of at least six of the following character traits: truthfulness, responsibility, compassion, diligence, sincerity, trustworthiness, respect, attentiveness, obedience, orderliness, forgiveness, virtue, fairness, caring, citizenship, and integrity.
A contribution that is made on or before April 15, following the close of the taxable year, may be applied to either the current or preceding taxable year and is considered to have been made the last day of that taxable year.
Q. Must a public school issue a receipt to the taxpayer for contributions made or fees paid for qualified activities or qualified programs? A. Yes. The receipt includes the public school name, school district number and CTDS number, taxpayer
name and address, amount paid, date paid, and a description of the activity or program being supported. Q. What are extracurricular activities? A. Extracurricular activities are school sponsored activities that may require enrolled students to pay a fee in order to participate. Generally, educational or recreational activities that supplement the educational program of the school are considered to be extracurricular activities. Q. Can a taxpayer make a payment of fees to an organization (e.g., PTA, school foundation, or school club) which then gives the funds in a lump sum to the school or directly pays for qualified activities or qualified programs? A. No. ARS 43-1089.01 requires that the fees be paid “to a public school.” Therefore, the payment must be made directly to the public school. Scan the QR code below to find out more. I
’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions as they often leave me feeling defeated. However, I do believe there’s value in setting high hopes for a fresh year. As we begin 2022, here are eight doable goals for families who seek making home life more harmonious. START A SPECIAL WEEKLY OR MONTHLY RITUAL My kids love board games and I often find myself putting off playing due to being distracted with work, cleaning, cooking, and more. However, starting a dedicated and consistent ritual would hold our entire family accountable for partaking in fun-filled activities. If weekly is too much pressure, determine a monthly family game night, movie night, craft night, or other type of night that fits your family best. Let each child offer their choice of activity and take turns implementing. PRIORITIZE EATING DINNER TOGETHER I know eating dinner as a family every night is often unattainable. With that being said, when families dine together, it helps them handle the stresses of daily life. It’s a nice time to debrief the day and talk things through as a unit. To get your kids chatting, play Two Highs, One Low—ask them to name two amazing things that happened that day and express one thing they found challenging.
PLAY HOOKY We get sick days, right? Why not take a “well day” and do something fun occasionally? When I was young, my mom would let me play hooky every so often—we’d do something sporadic, and it meant the world to me. Life moves fast and even kids need time to reboot, and sometimes a simple day off and quality time does the trick. TAKE THE TRIP Instill in your kids to value making memories over monetary things. The pandemic has reminded our family to take advantage of time and live life to the fullest, and so we’ve taken every opportunity to travel. People don’t take trips; trips take people and exposing your kids to exploration and adventure will only shape them into more cultured, wellrounded individuals. PAY IT FORWARD Make a list of various ways your family wants to help others this year, then determine a plan to make them happen. One idea is to ask your kids to choose some toys they’ve outgrown to donate to a shelter— it’s simple, but the lessons learned are so important. GET ACTIVE Exercise is the most cliché New Year’s resolution, so give it a fresh family-infused approach. For older kids, decide to train for a 5K together or do regular hikes in your area. Bike ride to lunch on the week-
ends or simply play catch with your kids in the yard. Lay a strong foundation of making exercise fun. UNPLUG Decide to digitally detach during specific times, such as for dinner or certain times during the evening. Put the phone down and focus on being 100% present for yourself and your family. It’s amazing how rewarding it is to have a conversation with actual eye contact! In other words, connect by disconnecting. HONOR YOUR CHILD’S INDIVIDUALITY I have three young boys and they’re all very different. While one is creative and crafty, the other is all about sports, and my toddler just loves to play. Make sure to get time with each of your kids individually, honoring their interests even if they’re not necessarily yours. The Latest Medical Advice for Influenza, And How It Differs From COVID-19 By Manisha Shah, D.O.
M
ost people dread getting sick. The winter season, notoriously known for viruses such as influenza, causes various ailments. The severity increases among extremes of ages, pregnant women, and persons of all ages with chronic medical conditions. If an individual does contract influenza, early detection and treatment can decrease the duration of infection. Ultimately, the best approach to remaining illness-free occurs with vaccination. Traditionally, influenza viruses (most commonly influenza A and influenza B) transmit through largeparticle respiratory droplets from one person to another. Inconspicuous transmission occurs when a person coughs or sneezes. Thus, public spaces serve as a breeding ground for viral contamination. Preventative measures are vital to avoid communal spread. Individuals with an infection display symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and body aches. Young children may present with nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Influenza and COVID-19 infections cause similar symptoms, however, COVID-19 infections continue throughout the year. Viral testing
differentiates the two. Early detection with testing allows for maximum treatment benefits and quicker resolution of symptoms.
it decreases the risk significantly. If symptoms arise, viral testing should still occur because vaccination status does not preclude an individual from treatment.
Health care providers usually diagnose the flu using a nasal swab in combination with a throat swab. Depending on the test, results are available within minutes to several hours. Symptomatic patients should test as close to the onset of infection to maximize detection of the virus. Symptoms resolve within three to seven days (for a course without complications), although cough and fatigue may persist for more than two weeks.
Treatment options exist for people testing positive for influenza. Besides supportive measures such as fluid hydration, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications for fever and body aches, antiviral medications can curb the course of an infection. The antiviral medication a health care provider chooses will depend on the age of the patient and their medical history. These medications may reduce the duration of symptoms, the risk of hospitalization, complications such as ear infections or pneumonia, and death rates in highrisk populations. In addition, antiviral medications have an added benefit of preventing an infection if a close contact tested positive for influenza.
The CDC recommends the influenza vaccine, known as the flu shot, for all people age six months and older. The influenza vaccine provides the most effective prevention against illness and its complications. The level of protection the vaccination provides depends on age and health of the recipient, the type of vaccine, the type of circulating influenza viruses in the community, and the similarity between circulating viruses and those in the vaccine. Eligible children under eight years of age without a previous influenza vaccination history should receive two doses of the vaccine four weeks apart. Vaccination does not guarantee protection from influenza, however,

ith the new year ahead of us, one of the things you might want to consider is putting in place an estate plan or updating the one you have. A great way to plan is with the Revocable Living Trust. When you establish your Trust, one of the most important decisions to make is who will be your successor Trustee.

IN THEATERS House Of Gucci The story of how Patrizia Reggiani fell in and out of love with—and then murdered—her husband and heir to the Gucci company, Maurizio. Ridley Scott can add comedy to his list of genres he can nail. House Of Gucci is a satire about the rich and how insecure they are, and how easily any taste of greed can corrupt. This is complemented by clever filmmaking choices and the cast. The performances range from chewing as much scenery as possible (Lady Gaga and Jared Leto) and playing it totally straight (Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons), and the contrast works well. It’s also nice to see how Scott gives this film the expensive look it needs, filled with overindulgence. A funny film, even if it feels bloated, but one could argue that fits for the film. BENEDETTA A nun begins a forbidden affair while

receiving visions from who she believes is Jesus. It’s hard to explain something like Benedetta without putting people off. It’s well done, with Paul Verhoeven making the most of the explicit subtext and visuals to support it. The actors convince you of their madness, hypocrisy, and desire, and Verhoeven loves to make you hate them in all their explicit glory. But it’s subject matter is one that will turn off and offend, or even just simply disgust. It’s a movie that one must approach cautiously—it’s not unrated for nothing.
ON NETFLIX The Power of The Dog A man begins a game of psychological war with his brother’s new wife. Silence can be killer, and Jane Campion, in her first movie in 12 years, uses it perfectly. Each third of the film focuses on a different character and how they affect everyone, and slowly but surely, their personalities change and deteriorate. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are the standouts here, both
strangely swapping personalities over the course of the film. The dark tone contrasts well with the lovely but still barren western frontier presented. Jonny Greenwood continues to impress with his tense score. Quite an accomplishment.
ON AMC+ Silent Night A family gathers for what may be their final Christmas dinner. Silent Night, for most of its runtime, is great. The dark humor mixed with sincere family drama is a great showcase for firsttime director Camille Griffin. How the various cast members show their emotions, whether subdued or outward, makes these characters real. Griffin’s script also does a great job at hinting at the main plot without telling us for the first twenty minutes. But the film unfortunately falls apart in its last ten minutes, rushing through its conclusion, our characters collapsing suddenly, and a final moment that is incredibly sudden and unearned plays out. It
almost ruins what could have been a new holiday classic. It’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it to not stick the landing.
