ARIZONA IN REVIEW: 2019, A YEAR TO REMEMBER

2019 WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR ARIZONA. From breaking through 300,000 new jobs added since 2015, to earning the state’s highest-ever credit rating; coming together to sign historic water legislation; recognizing 60 years of partnership with Sonora, Mexico; blazing the trail as the first state in the nation to provide universal recognition of out-of-state occupational licenses; passing historic tax reform that benefits middle class families; boosting Arizona’s Rainy Day Fund to $1 billion while investing in teachers, students, infrastructure, public safety and more. KEY HIGHLIGHTS SECURING ARIZONA’S WATER FUTURE: Governor Ducey in January signed legislation ratifying Arizona’s Drought Contingency Plan (DCP), allowing Arizona to sign onto an inter-state water agreement that outlines ways the state will contribute to conserving more water from the Colorado River. Arizona joined six other states and Mexico in the signing. In April, President Trump signed legislation formalizing the DCP, Arizona’s most significant water reforms in four decades. A FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE, BALANCED BUDGET: Arizona’s balanced budget added $542 million to Arizona’s Rainy Day Fund, bringing it to a record $1 billion and helping better protect Arizona’s investments during the next economic downturn. PASSING REVENUE-NEUTRAL TAX REFORM: Arizona’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget built on the tax relief passed as part of President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to make Arizona’s code simpler, flatter and more fair. The revenue neutral tax reforms—the most significant of the past 30 years—prioritized middle and low-income earners, increasing Arizona’s standard deductions to $12,000 for individual filers and $24,000 for married filers. For the first time in Arizona, the state standard deduction matches the federal standard deduction, representing a significant simplification of the tax code.

INVESTING IN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS: The FY 2020 budget added $660 million new dollars to K-12 public schools, bringing the total new dollars added to public education since 2015 to $4.5 billion.

GROWING CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION: Governor Ducey’s FY 2020 budget invested $10 million to expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings across Arizona. Through a grant program, high schools with CTE programs will receive up to $1,000 for each student who graduates with a certification in specific industries. The budget also invested $20 million to expand Pima Community College’s Aviation Technology Program and $5.8 million to expand Maricopa Community College’s healthcare offerings. JOBS ON THE RISE: Arizona this year surpassed 300,000 new private-sector jobs added since 2015, with companies such as Infosys, Offerpad, Raytheon, Microsoft, Benchmark Electronics, Lucid Motors and more making major jobs announcements this year. EXPANDING I-17, INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE: Governor Ducey announced that investments topping $300 million will widen I-17 to three lanes along 15 miles between Anthem and Black Canyon City and build an 8-mile system of flex lanes on the grade between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. The project is set to begin by spring 2021, with completion of all improvements expected by 2023. INVESTING IN HEALTHY FAMILIES: Arizona kicked off the year with a plan to invest $56 million to expand Arizona’s childcare subsidy programs, increasing access to childcare for low-income working families and foster parents. SUPPORTING THOSE WHO KEEP ARIZONA SAFE: This year, Arizona added $74 million dollars to provide raises for over 14,400 public safety personnel employed by the state, totaling roughly 40 percent of the state workforce. Those receiving pay raises

included State Troopers, personnel at the Department of Corrections, the Department of Juvenile Corrections and the Arizona State Hospital and caseworkers at the Department of Child Safety. SAFER SCHOOLS: Governor Ducey’s executive budget included the first-ever dedicated funding for school counselors. With $20 million added to Arizona’s school safety grant program, in total, 383 school resource officers, counselors and social workers were funded through the program, with more on the way. EXPANDING SUICIDE AWARENESS IN SCHOOLS: Governor Ducey in September signed the Mitch Warnock Act, expanding suicide prevention and awareness training throughout Arizona schools. The bill requires school districts and charter schools to provide training in suicide awareness and prevention to school guidance counselors, teachers,

principals and other school personnel who work with students in grades 6 through 12. NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR CYBERSECURITY: Recognizing Arizona’s bipartisan leadership in cybersecurity, the National Governors Association (NGA) selected Arizona along with five other states to participate in the NGA’s policy academy on election cybersecurity operations. Through the program, Arizona receives technical assistance from NGA staff to develop, implement and scale training and best practices throughout the state to improve coordination between election officials and reduce cyber-related risks ahead of the 2020 election. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FROM THE MVD IN 2020 2020 WILL USHER IN A NEW WAY FOR THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION CUSTOMERS TO GET LICENSE PLATES, REGISTRATION TABS AND MANY DOCUMENTS SUCH AS VEHICLE TITLES. Beginning in January, customers will receive these items through the U.S. Mail and will no longer be able to obtain them at an MVD or Authorized Third Party office. Customers should make sure their address is current and complete with the U.S. Postal Service and MVD. “The MVD needs to be well-positioned for the growth of e-commerce,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser Richards. “Distributing items such as license plates, tabs, title work and other documents allows us to prepare for the growing demand for fulfilling customer orders through the mail as the MVD continues to increase

the number of services available online, anytime.” All registration documents and license plate tabs, including those issued at MVD self-service kiosks will be mailed. When customers renew, their record is updated instantly and a receipt is proof of registration. For customers getting a license plate, this change will also mean the plate number will be entered into the customer’s service file and the temporary plate issued at the office will have the same number as the permanent plate being mailed. Customers who purchase Off-Highway Vehicle decals the same day they plan to use them at a recreational area will not receive the decal at the office, but will get a receipt that should be kept with them to prove the decals have been purchased.

In the future, more vehicle titles will transition to an electronic process. Currently, a limited number of title transfers such as one-owner to oneowner transfers of Arizona-registered vehicles can already be done entirely online through AZ MVD Now, which is available through ServiceArizona. com. Another important reminder from the MVD: There are less than 200 business days left until October 1, 2020, and the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division reminds customers to get the AZ Travel ID to make it through TSA airport checkpoints starting on that date.

MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser Richards said, “We don’t want to see travel plans ruined because flyers don’t have an ID that the TSA will accept.”

LOOP 101 PIMA FREEWAY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HAS INITIATED A PROJECT TO WIDEN AND IMPROVE THE LOOP 101 (PIMA FREEWAY) FROM INTERSTATE 17 IN PHOENIX EAST TO PIMA ROAD IN SCOTTSDALE. Improvements are needed to address growing traffic demands in the northeast Valley and relieve traffic congestion on the Loop 101 during the morning and evening peak travel periods. MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDE: • Adding one general purpose lane in each direction between I-17 and Pima Road

• Adding an auxiliary lane in each direction between 7th Street and Cave Creek Road • Constructing a new overpass structure at the future Miller Road alignment • Modifying freeway ramps and frontage road connections at 11 interchanges Additional components include construction of noise or retaining walls where warranted, improvements to drainage and new rubberized asphalt resurfacing and pavement markings. This project is utilizing the “design-build” (D/B) method of delivery to help reduce the overall project timeline. This delivery method differs from the more traditional “design-bid-build” approach in which the project is completed in two phases (designed and then constructed).

The D/B method involves pairing civil engineering firms with construction contractors to create “design builders” who work synergistically from beginning to end. This creates more opportunities for innovation and can reduce costs. The D/B method of delivery is most advantageous when transportation improvements are needed immediately to reduce high traffic volume or chronic congestion. In order to get the AZ Travel ID, customers need to bring in a document such as a birth certificate or valid U.S. Passport to prove identity and a second document with their Social Security number. Finally, two pieces of documentation proving Arizona residency such as a utility bill, bank statement or something similar with a current name and physical address (not a P.O. Box) are also needed.

The AZ Travel ID replaces the current license or ID and re-sets the expiration date. The cost is $25, and under federal law, it is valid for eight years. PHOENIX POLITICIANS APPROVE AIRPORT GROUND TRANSPORTATION CHANGES —

WILL RIDESHARE COMPANIES UBER AND LYFT TAKE OFF? ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2019, THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL APPROVED AN AMENDMENT TO THE CITY CODE WHICH WILL ALLOW PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO ADJUST FEES FOR GROUND TRANSPORTATION. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport does not receive any tax revenue and is supported only by rent and fees paid by those who use its facilities. Commercial ground transportation businesses have been paying only a fraction of what it costs to operate the ground transportation program at Sky Harbor that supports their operation and are currently being subsidized by other Airport businesses. With the changes approved by City Council, the commercial ground transportation providers will be treated similarly to the other companies doing business at Sky Harbor.

Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio has been very vocal about his disapproval of this tax increase, and after the approval he released a statement reading, “Despite learning that it is in direct violation of the Arizona constitution, the politicians at City Hall voted once again to pass this horrible new tax on rideshare. This will absolutely be overturned by the courts, and what the politicians did today is just take more money out of your pocket to pay for a futile lawsuit and screw over everyone who uses Uber and Lyft to get to the airport.”

Beginning February 1, 2020, new ground transportation fees will offer two options for rideshare providers: A $2.80 drop-off and pickup fee at the PHX Sky Train Station or a $4.00 drop-off and pick-up fee for service at the terminal curb. When rideshare operators began in June of 2016, they represented only 9.3 percent of the commercial business. Today they represent 70 percent of the commercial traffic. While certain regulated providers, like taxis, are not allowed to pass fees onto the drivers or to their customers, other unregulated providers such as rideshare operators can choose whether to pass the fees to their customers or drivers.

Uber has reiterated their “willingness to work with you and your staff to identify a better solution that does not unfairly target those who rely on ridesharing.” But also stands firm on their ultimatum: “If the Phoenix City Council approves the ground transportation fee structure currently recommended by PHX, Uber will be forced to cease operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor effective January 2020,” Chris Garcia, Global Airport Partnerships Manager for Uber wrote in a letter addressing City of Phoenix Aviation Department Director Jim Bennett. The letter also calls out the “millions of Arizonans and visitors” that Uber has helped move around the valley since their launch in Phoenix in 2012, during “a period of remarkable economic growth and expansion” and points to the company’s heavy investment in the Phoenix community.

Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft have made their stance known if this amendment passed. Last month, they sent letters expressing that if Phoenix imposes this tax increase, they will leave the airport. If they put their pedal to the metal, this would make Phoenix the first airport

The new fee structure will also encourage the use of the 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station, reducing the number of vehicles in the Airport core. The PHX Sky Train was built for and continues to dramatically reduce congestion on airport roadways, allowing for ground transportation

businesses to utilize curb space. Incentivizing PHX Sky Train pick-up and drop-off will help ease traffic congestion and improve air quality by reducing the number of idling vehicles at Airport curbs. While many other major airports are forcing rideshare providers off their curbs to remote locations, Phoenix Sky Harbor is continuing to allow premium curbside service while offering a green incentive to use a remote location. The Council also provided for a 40 percent green discount for all commercial ground transportation providers using zero emission vehicles. Now the keys are in the hands of Uber and Lyft — will they rev the engine on their threats to leave Sky Harbor? At time of press, there had been no statement from either rideshare company on their next move.

NEW VENUES, ENHANCED FAN EXPERIENCES SPICE UP 85TH EDITION OF “THE PEOPLE’S OPEN”

he 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open is just around the corner, and there is already plenty of buzz at TPC Scottsdale to prepare for the 85th edition of “The People’s Open.” Construction began on September 16 and will continue for more than four months leading up to the tournament, which will tee it up January 27 – February 2 in Scottsdale. “Each and every year we try to improve upon the previous year, and this year is no different,” said Tournament Chairman Tim Woods. “Everyone is aware of our iconic 16th hole and the various popular

hospitality venues throughout the course, but our focus the last couple of years has been to enhance the overall experience for our general admission guests, something we are doing again for 2020.”

The extremely popular general-admission viewing area now named The Ridge presented by Taylor Morrison will double in size, providing a nearly 36,000-square-feet viewing platform featuring lounge style furniture as well as food and beverage options, along with drink rails on three sides.

One of those new venues open to the public is the Kiva Club, a multi-level general admission venue located next to Bay Club that offers views of holes 10 and 17 and will provide food and beverage options for purchase. Kiva Club will feature a main viewing deck and a second-level platform with tables and seating across the rail, along with a large bar in the middle, making it a prime spot to watch the golf action. “The 17th hole has really grown over the last few years, but the majority of that growth was corporate hospitality,” Woods said. “It’s such a great hole, we wanted to create a venue for the public to be able to experience it in style and comfort as well.”

Another major expansion will be found at the finishing 18th hole. Last year the new E18hteen venue was introduced and doubled in size; this year that venue will be matched by the new Scorekeeper suites that will sit directly across from E18hteen on the west side of the 18th Fairway and will feature a double-decker, arcum-style structure that will house 60 additional hospitality suites on the 442-yard, par-4 finishing hole. Other changes for 2020 include the addition of four new loge suites near the tee box on the south side of the 16th hole that will include Aces Lounge, an exclusive bar for loge patrons aptly named to honor all of the players who have carded a hole-in-one on the famed 16th hole; five new loge suites at the Cove that will offer views of 17 green and 18 tee box; and newly refurbished Greenskeeper Suites.

Another public hospitality venue, while not new, is being expanded for the fourth straight year. The area atop the hill overlooking hole No. 12, No. 6 green and No. 13 tee which started in 2016 as El Rancho will get yet another upgrade for the 2020 tournament.

ENCHANTED CHAPTERS: PROVIDING COMFORT FOR YOUNG READERS By Molly Cerreta Smith

nchanted Chapters bookstore at 10880 North 32nd Street has only been open for a few months but it has been a dream of owner Andrea Montepagano’s that grew out of a need and a desire to create something that really didn’t exist — a bookstore designed and geared toward children with autism and specific sensory needs. “As a mom of two kids with autism, I didn’t really have a lot of options for places to take them that were sensory friendly, where they could go and just hang out and feel comfortable,” she says, admitting that while many locations offer sensory-friendly days or events, she felt there needed to be a place specifically designed to meet these needs. So she made one. Montepagano says they added on a specific area in the bookstore that serves as the sensory room. “We designed this room to be a place of relief for kids when they are feeling overstimulated or just have a place to relax,” she says. “There is not a lot of stimuli in there, no noise, the walls are bare and there is not a lot of bright color. It’s fairly muted, offers dim lighting and there are just a few curated toys that are

educational and engaging. We want kids to know they can go in there anytime, stay as long as they want and just have a place where they feel comfortable.” Part of this grew out of her own experience with her children, when out at mainstream bookstores or shops. “For many kids, they end up feeling trapped in a store, and in most cases there is no respite from the overstimulation for those with sensory issues,” she says. “We just wanted to give these kids an inclusive opportunity, where they feel equal.” Montepagano chose the location for Enchanted Chapters after moving to the 32nd Street and Shea area. Within a month of moving there, she started looking for a nearby location for the bookstore. “Our life is centered in this community,” she explains. “Our kids go to school here, and it just felt right. We like that we’re centrally located in the valley and there are a lot of other independently owned stores around us too. We didn’t want to be next to a Walmart. We like to support the local community and we enjoy getting to know our customers.” Only open for a short time, she says they already have repeat customers and she is happy to offer

them so much more than just a shopping experience. “We offer something they wouldn’t get at a big box store. There is no interaction there, there are no relationships there,” she adds. A PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY GAME

t’s hockey season! With the regular season being in full swing from October through April, and post-season lasting until early June, going to a hockey game is a great way to get your kids out of the house and have a fun sports experience for the whole family. We love going to see the Arizona Coyotes whenever we get the chance, but we’ve learned a few lessons about taking kids to hockey games along the way. Here are some tips to help you and your kids appreciate the noise, excitement, and frozen fun of attending a professional hockey game.

TICKETS Like all professional sporting events, there is a range of pricing for tickets to hockey matches. Prices will fluctuate based on demand for each game, seat location, and time purchased, so take time to plan ahead to maximize your enjoyment of the event. Scope out your options and buy tickets for seats in a location that works best for your family. Upper level or club level seating can be a bit quieter and is less expensive, while sitting closer to the ice lets you see more action. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Hockey games are cold. Really cold. Here in the desert, it’s important to remember that you need to bring sweaters or jackets with you to the game, or you and your kids will get uncomfortable very quickly. Wear long pants, leave the flip flops at home, and dress for very low temperatures. PARKING Plan ahead to know where to park and the directions for getting into the parking lot and then the hockey rink. Take time to know where you are allowed to park and, if possible, purchase passes in advance to make getting to and from the arena easier for everyone. FOOD Anticipate mealtimes and plan food purchases and locations before you go. There are food options in the arena, but when you attend a Coyotes game, Westgate also has tons of great options for places to eat. Plan mealtimes and venues to make sure your kids stay on schedule and avoid the crankiness.

SAFETY Plan your safety and exit strategies. Discuss where to meet if someone gets lost, know where your seats are, know how to keep track of your children, and agree on deciding when to bail on watching the match. PARTICIPATE IN THE KIDS CLUB Howler’s Kids Club is open to kids 14 and under, and is a great way to help your kids get excited about hockey and attending a game. Kids Club memberships range from free to special exclusive pricing, and some of the benefits include discounted tickets to certain games, special IDs and wristbands, autograph events, and participation in the Kids Post Game Slapshot. BE PREPARED FOR NOISE AND HOOPLA Remember that a hockey game and the crowd attending it will be very loud and at times can become really rowdy. Most hockey fans are pretty well behaved, but if you are concerned about rowdy behavior be sure to check out the stadium layout in advance to find places to take your kid to get out of the crowd. Many parents also bring headphones and a mobile device with movies, music or games to help smaller children avoid the noise. My advice is that you know your kid best. Think about how they will react to big, noisy crowds and the loud sounds of hockey players crashing into the glass. Some kids absolutely love hockey, but others not so much. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy cheering for your team. Hockey is a game, and games are all about having fun. Going to a hockey game should be an adventure with your kids and a great memory for your whole family. appy New Year! Is buying or selling your home on your list of New Year’s Resolutions? If so, your timing couldn’t be better. Desert Ridge and the surrounding area is a hot destination for snowbird buyers and the snowbirds will soon be flocking here for all the upcoming Arizona activities! Events like Barrett Jackson (January 11-19), The Phoenix Open (January 27 – February 2) and Spring Training games (February 21 – March 24) bring in visitors who often turn into Buyers. Our area is a big hit with snowbirds for several reasons – proximity to events, golf courses, spas, shopping, dining, hiking, biking and easy freeway and airport access. This is also a great time for Buyers and Sellers because loan limits have just been increased. The FHA loan limit for Arizona is now $331,760, which is an increase of nearly $17,000 over 2019’s loan limit of $314,827. The conforming loan limit has increased to $510,400, which is an increase of $26,050 over 2019. Increased loan limits are big news for Buyers and Sellers because according to the National Association of Realtors, 88 percent of recent buyers financed their home purchase. 97 percent of buyers 38 years and younger financed, and 61 percent of all buyers used conventional loans to finance their home. Buyers can now more easily afford a higher purchase price, and Sellers have now increased their pool of available Buyers for their homes due to increased affordability. If you’re wanting to prepare your home to sell, we suggest these first steps. To start, fix anything that you know is broken. We all enjoy the razzle dazzle of upgrades and home improvements, but if your home is in need of repair, then start with repairs first. The big items to review first – roof, air conditioning, windows, pool equipment, plumbing, electrical and easily identified cosmetic issues. and bathrooms, but if your roof is in need of repair, your pool finish is cracking or your windows are fogged, then adding a flashy quartz counter won’t distract Buyers from critical issues with the home. So, start with the basics and ensure your home is in good repair.

Your next step should be to de-clutter, and the New Year is a great time for that activity. Start with small projects like drawers and cabinets, and then hit the closets and garage. You’ll also want to clear additional clutter in your home, such as pictures, knickknacks and collectibles. When you start going through your home, think about what you’ll want to have in your next home. Will it fit? Do you still love it? Maybe it’s time to donate or sell it, rather than pack it for your next home. The more you get packed, sold or donated now, the easier your eventual move will go. The organization was founded in 2003 and inspired by one families desire to provide a post-high school program for their daughter, Dylan, as well as her peers, that would offer opportunities to develop skills, personal relationships and inclusion within the community. ust a short drive north and west of Phoenix, you’ll find the oldest Arizona town north of Tucson, and the Dude Ranch capital of the state. Wickenburg is a thriving small town full of Old West, Arizona Territory traditions. HASSAYAMPA RIVER PRESERVE The Hassayampa River Preserve stretches for five miles along the Hassayampa River, along highway 60 as you head into Wickenburg from Phoenix. Originally established by the Nature Conservancy to protect more than 290 species of birds on 70,000 acres of riparian forestland, the preserve is now managed by the Maricopa County Park System. The preserve provides self-guided trails along the lush river bottoms and floodplain, and through cottonwood-willow forests and dense mesquite bosques, where you can view a wide variety of wildlife species, including the endangered Southwestern Will Flycatcher, the rare Arizona Red-Shouldered Hawk, and the largest concentration 20 • January 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

DESERT CABALLEROS WESTERN MUSEUM Known as “Arizona’s Most Western Museum,” the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is a state of the art museum open to visitors year round. The museum displays a collection of more than 400 works of art about the American West by artists such as Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, and Joe Beeler. It also showcases historical exhibits depicting turn-of-thecentury Wickenburg, and has special features for kids, like the “Out on the Ranch” exhibit. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is definitely worth visiting. FRONTIER STREET AND HISTORIC WALKING TOUR The town of Wickenburg is full of Western history. To celebrate this, their Chamber of Commerce developed a self-guided tour of historic buildings, plus about two dozen bronze sculptures and works of art placed throughout the downtown, to showcase the town’s roots. One of the most famous highlights is the Jail Tree, one of Arizona’s Centennial Witness Trees, which acted as a “jail” for shackling prisoners and

drunks for over 20 years before the jailhouse building was put up in 1890. The tour also includes six large bronze sculptures and 16 linking pieces, all uniquely colored to appear realistic. Each of the large sculptures includes a button with a narrative from Arizona State Historian Marshall Trimble describing the history of Wickenburg. VULTURE CITY AND VULTURE MINE TOURS The Vulture mine just outside of Wickenburg opened in 1863 when Henry Wickenburg, a prospector during the California Gold Rush, discovered a quartz outcropping containing gold. Shortly after the mine was established, the small mining town of Vulture City was developed. At one point, the town had a population of several thousand citizens with amenities including a brothel, mess hall, and post office. Today, visitors can take a guided tour through the beautifully restored buildings of Vulture City and get a first-hand glimpse of life in an Old West mining town. Winter is a great time of year to visit Wickenburg whether for a day trip or a weekend stay, with many fun places to see and experience. KNIVES OUT

Knives Out is not your every day, run-ofthe-mill murder mystery. This film makes the normal macabre subject matter feel playful, without losing that “what will happen next” feeling you expect from the genre. At its core, this is a rich story about greed and how it destroys families and those around them. An incredible cast is brought to life in the memorable Thornbery family, with Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas as the outsiders looking in. With its balance of humor and tension, Rian Johnson made one of 2019’s most entertaining films.

THE IRISHMAN

Martin Scorsese has never been better than here. The Irishman delivers all the great traits of traditional mob films, while still managing to bring something new to the table. It delves deep into how crime can kill our family relationships, and the fear of growing old, death and simply being alone. De Niro, Pacino and Pesci are extraordinary, the latter delivering probably his most human performance ever. Scorsese still showcases his “larger than life” style, but with a new vision leaning towards a dour look in production design and cinematography. By the end, you may not like these characters, but you do feel sorry for them.

DOCTOR SLEEP

Mike Flanagan manages to combine Stanley Kubrick’s otherworldly horror with the strangeness of Stephen King’s

writing without losing his own vision. The creepy designs, camerawork, and music complement each other making this film truly Flanagan’s, while still respecting what has come before. Danny, Abra and Rose are all brought to life by amazing performances. The careful balance of gore without becoming exploitative is impressive. Most movies of this genre fall heavily to one side of the blood and guts line or the other. An interesting exploration of addiction is also very nuanced and thought-provoking. Without a doubt, Doctor Sleep is a worthy successor to an iconic film.

The Last Full Measure

Let me start by saying that Tom Hanks does a great job in a role that he was obviously born to play. Unfortunately, for me, the film just does not work. Fred Rogers seems to be portrayed as a god of “nice guys.” While we all agree that his message of understanding was and is important, it’s one that has already been told. What was needed here was a dive into the real Rogers and what it took to maintain the magic that was “Mr. Rogers.” Yes, this was a film about his interaction with Vogel, but it missed so much going from point A to point B. No one does a 180 that easily. The real Rogers must have opened himself up so much more, exposing his own flaws to help Vogel - that is what we need to see today. Heroes are not born, they are made through hard work.
