It’s been almost two months since Arizona’s utility regulator kicked off what’s sure to be a long and contentious fight over how much homeowners with rooftop solar deserve to be paid for the electricity they share with their neighbors. We’ve commented on the Arizona Corporation Commission’s head-slapper of a decision to reopen an already thoroughly litigated issue, so now we will try to anticipate some of the anti-solar rhetoric that’s likely to pop up in the ensuing discussions. One of the most pernicious falsehoods about solar is that it’s unreliable—and, conversely, that its Earth-heating legacy competitors are a firm rock we can stand on. The state’s largest provider of electric power has cited its abundant stock of fossil-fuel infrastructure as reason to dismiss any concerns over the state’s energy security. Such reassurance might satisfy those who have listened to comments from public officials—many of whom are closely associated with fossil-fuel interests—who have derided solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources as fickle and unreliable in comparison to coal and natural gas. But people who have paid attention to recent developments in the planet’s changing climate are more likely to have some skeptical questions. Even as officials seek to roll back Arizona’s gains in solar-enabled energy independence, recent events are proving that solar power will be crucial to Arizonans’ energy security and access to scarce resources. Rosy predictions about the resilience of Arizona’s energy infrastructure in its current, heavily fossildependent state are far from reliable given some stark realities. Researchers at ASU found that the risk of cascading grid failures increases by a factor of 30 with each increase of a degree celsius in average annual temperatures. What’s more, the financial viability of fossil fuels
as a cheap, dependable energy source is doubtful given that the EPA, under President Biden’s direction, is currently preparing regulations that would dramatically increase the cost of such fuels to account for the damage they cause to our planet. All in all, fossil fuels could soon turn out to be as unreliable as they are dirty. By contrast, renewable energy, especially solar, is proving its value as a critical component of a resilient, dependable grid. Solar power and battery storage helped prevent power outages in Texas during the heat wave that struck the southern half of the United States this past summer, according to Inside Climate News. When energy demand shot up along with the mercury, solar power helped stabilize the grid with badly needed electricity, preventing grid failures. That likely saved lives. Meanwhile, events proved more embarrassing for fossil-fuel energy, which we’ve heard touted as the only energy source we can count on, apart from nuclear. One of two plant failures mentioned in ICN’s article was a coal plant. The other was a nuclear plant. Whether we can rely on our electrical infrastructure determines whether we can rely on our taken-for-granted access to vital resources, especially water. Global warming simultaneously increases the need for fresh water (as a coolant for the power plants needed for air conditioning) and decreases its availability in the form of precipitation. Reduced rain and snowfall, in turn, threaten to idle the state’s sources of hydropower, increasing our reliance on water-sucking power plants. As we observed in our previous article, the interconnected nature of our resource challenges means there is virtually no aspect of civilization that is left untouched by the climate crisis. We should be looking for solutions that are correspondingly wideranging in their effects.
Solar power is one such solution. Solar panels require no water to cool them down, unlike Arizona’s thirsty coal and nuclear plants. What’s more, they eliminate the need to burn a corresponding amount of coal or natural gas to serve a given household, slowing the accumulation of greenhouse gases that is depriving us of water. Speaking of reliability, it’s worthwhile to reflect on who we can rely on to foster the clean, abundant energy sources that we need. It doesn’t seem to be public officials, who are often eager to stymie the country’s clean-energy transition with imaginative interpretations of facts. You may recall that pro-fossil-fuel politicians and pundits blamed renewable energy for Texas’s deadly winter power outages in 2021, contributing to the anti-solar misinformation that makes going green such a steep climb. This is especially ironic given that renewables helped save Texas’s hide this past summer. That spontaneous disinformation campaign was just one data point in a trend line that is fairly easy to read. Public officials are as liable to inhibit as to encourage the growth of America’s green-energy economy, especially in states with deeply established profit centers in the form of fossil-fuel infrastructure. That’s why people who benefit from a reliable energy grid and a healthy environment—which is to say, everyone—has a civic duty to stay engaged in public discussions over whether to foster or stymie the growth of clean energy. (We know we will, and once the Corporation Commission schedules another public meeting in its rate case, we’ll be sure to let you know.) As it turns out, we are the ones we have to rely on to secure our energy future. A bright energy future is won through individual initiative, not just government support. Anthem Community Council Honors Dennis Salisbury with the 2023 Veterans Service Award Photos courtesy of Anthem Community Council DURING THE VETERANS DAY CEREMONY HELD NOVEMBER 11, THE ANTHEM COMMUNITY COUNCIL (ACC) RECOGNIZED DENNIS SALISBURY AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2023 ANTHEM VETERANS SERVICE AWARD. Created by the ACC in 2013 and presented annually, the award recognizes an individual or group
demonstrating “extraordinary service and selfless dedication in support of our nation’s veterans.” His role as a veteran leader in the North Phoenix community began many years ago. Salisbury is one of those veterans who knows only how to say "yes" or "how may I help" and his involvement spans veteran event and activity in Anthem for years, including the Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, visits to veterans at the federal penitentiary, working with Youth for Troops on many projects, and helping veteran families in need. Sourced from the nomination, Salisbury’s contributions made an impact, "Because of this individual's tireless hours and selfless dedication in support of our veterans, Anthem is a much greater place. The Anthem Veterans Memorial activities are elevated due to his assistance and countless veterans have been positively honored, supported, and saluted by him in ways we may never know.” A plaque with the names of all recipients is on display at the Anthem Civic Building. IN THE MAIN SANCTUARY OF DESERT HILLS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 34605 N. TOM DARLINGTON RD. Set against a backdrop of breathtaking views of the boulders, this free concert will feature an hour of holiday-themed music played by a silvery blend of piccolo, C flute, alto, and bass flutes. Led by Christina Reedis, a DHCSM instructor who holds a master’s in flute performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, the Flute Choir is open to flautists of all ages and ability levels. While anyone who shares a love
of playing the flute is welcome to join, participants will likely get the most enjoyment from the group if they have at least two years of experience with the instrument. The ensemble began meeting to prepare for the holiday concert in early November and will convene again in the late spring to rehearse for its second performance. There is a one-time $25 participation fee to join the Flute Choir. In addition to serving as ensemble leader, Reedis offers private flute and piano lessons for DHCSM students. After graduating from the New England Conservatory, Reedis played flute with the Boston Philharmonic and various small ensembles around the city. She then relocated to Arizona and built a large flute and piano studio in the Phoenix area. Recently, Reedis played principal flute with the Scottsdale Arts
Orchestra, with which she had a solo performance in 2010. With over 25 years of experience teaching music, Christina strives to create a teaching environment focused on each student’s needs and personality. She is proud of her students’ many accomplishments, which have included winner in the Protégé International competition, participation in Regionals and All-State, and first place in the Arizona Flute Society competition. The Flute Choir is the newest DHCSM ensemble, joining the popular Saxophone Ensemble and Community Band. These groups offer musicians of all levels an opportunity to develop their musical skills in a fun, supportive environment and experience the joy of performing publicly. The Lady Eagles, Ridgeline Academy's Varsity Girls Volleyball team, clinched the Division 2 State Volleyball Championship title, marking a significant milestone in the school's sports history.

BASIS Charter Schools Expands to North Phoenix with New K-12 Campus

ASIS Charter Schools is set to open a new school in North Phoenix, marking its first expansion in the region since 2018.
BASIS Phoenix North, located in the Anthem area, will be the network's 23rd school in Arizona and its 40th nationwide.
Open enrollment for the new school commenced on November 15, signaling the start of a new chapter for education in the area. The K-12 school, situated near the under-construction $40 billion Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plant, is poised to cater to a growing community.
In its inaugural year, BASIS Phoenix North will occupy Caurus Academy's 25,367-square-foot elementary school building at 41900 N. 42nd Ave., in Anthem. With classes set to begin next fall, the school will initially accommodate 650 students and employ 25 to 40 staff members. The following year, it will move to a larger, 54,955-square-foot facility at 44111 N. 43rd Ave. in Phoenix.
K-5 is scheduled for August 2024, for the 2024-2025 school year.
This expansion aligns with BASIS Charter Schools' reputation for top academic rankings both in Arizona and across the nation. BASIS Phoenix North, projected to serve a full capacity of 1,150 students, will offer a STEM-infused, liberal arts program, continuing the network's commitment to providing world-class education since 1998.
With its tuition-free, public charter school model, BASIS Phoenix North is set to provide, what many consider, an exceptional educational experience for families living in northern Phoenix, Anthem, and New River areas, north of Loop 101 and along I-17.

or James and Sasha Lewis, being a big kid is all in a day’s work. As the owners of Leisure Installs, they make fun happen for Valley families by installing and selling playsets and outdoor recreational equipment. The husband and wife team consider themselves giant kids. With their colorful hair and boundless energy, it’s not uncommon to find them testing out their products in Leisure Installs’ giant showroom. From climbing the rock walls, to jumping on the trampolines, shooting baskets, zooming down slides, or swinging from the monkey bars, James and Sasha test out their products from a kid’s perspective with safety always top of mind. “We’ve been doing this for over 20 years, so we can look at any playset and tell you the manufacturer, what its features are, the maintenance it’ll require, and if it’ll last,” says James. But, on a 12-hour road trip by myself I'm singing everything to my dog in the car! My favorite road trip karaoke song is “Bohemian Rhapsody” (yeah, I know...). THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS... my family is my motivation, so that's more than one person. However, my husband Matt motivates me by giving me the courage and support to go out and accomplish my goals! From making huge messes in the kitchen trying to bake the perfect loaf of sourdough bread to driving halfway across the country to compete with my horses, he supports me with my career and all my wacky ideas! THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS... anything my Australian shepherd does, because is the craziest and happiest dog.
THE PERFECT DAY IS... every day! Life is a blessing and I try to truly enjoy every minute of every day, even when I am working. Phoenix Suns Gorilla Delights Hospice Patient By Lin Sue Flood

t was a slam dunk surprise for a senior community when the Phoenix Suns Gorilla popped in for a visit. The team mascot wanted to thank a hospice patient for being a devoted fan for over 50 years. He bounded into ClearWater Pinnacle Peak with arms full of team swag for 88-year-old Lee Kragenbring.
“Lee has been struggling with health challenges of late and we wanted to bring him a little joy,” says Hospice of the Valley social worker Renee Adams. “I genuinely haven’t seen him this happy ever, not to mention the smiles on his family’s faces. Many high fives were given!” The visit astounded the season ticket holder who has attended more games than he can count. Though he no longer speaks, Kragenbring was grinning ear to ear as the Gorilla entertained the crowd of 50 residents with backflips and dance moves. Cheers broke out as he walked across the room on his hands.

rivingMBA celebrates 20 years of keeping teens safe on Valley roads. With two Valley locations, DrivingMBA is the only driving school in Arizona that offers a comprehensive program using a combination of simulation labs and on-road instruction to teach driving fundamentals and defensive driving skills to teens, and other drivers, across the state. “Since opening in November 2003, our singular mission has been to provide teen drivers with the training and
tools necessary to become competent, responsible and safe solo drivers,” says Maria Wojtczak, chief operating officer at DrivingMBA. “Our system is unlike any other driving program available in Arizona and the whole country.” According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 3,000 people are killed each year in car accidents involving a teen driver (aged 15 to 18 years old.) Driving is the single deadliest thing teenagers do every day. “When my husband Rich and I started

this business two decades ago it was a true passion,” says Wojtczak. “At that time, our daughter was in middle school and learning to drive was on the horizon. We were shocked at the lack of professional driver training and education needed to attain an Arizona driver’s license.” Arizona’s high rate of red-light runners, road rage incidents and wrong-way drivers compounds the complexity of educating inexperienced drivers. DrivingMBA mitigates these dangers through its in-depth training for teens that highlights skills needed to avoid these and other issues like distracted driving. “Our goal was to develop a program that would ensure novice drivers were prepared for the many situations that come up daily when driving,” Wojtczak adds. “Driving has changed over the last 20 years, vehicles are faster, roadways are more aggressive, and the level of distraction today is significantly higher with all of the technology available in cars, cell phones and of course, social media.” In 2021, DrivingMBA expanded to a second Valley location and now trains
roughly 1,200 students each year in a variety of programs, including classes for adults, seniors, exceptional learners, and fleet drivers. The pinnacle of these options is the DRIVE Certification Training Package, a 30-hour course that is one of the most thorough teen training programs in the nation. Spread out over six months or more, it takes participants from permit to official license and includes 14 hours of driving in simulation labs, both driving fundamentals and defensive driving and a minimum of 10 hours of on-road training. Additionally, DrivingMBA incorporates elements of partnering with parents of teens who play a key role in the total learning process. “Over the years, DrivingMBA has invested more than half a million dollars in simulator equipment, some of which is used to train local police, firefighters, and truck drivers to be defensive drivers,” Wojtczak says. “It is all part of DrivingMBA’s effort to provide all drivers with the advanced training they need to return home safely each and every day.” For more information, drivingmba.com. myhyperlocalnews.com

f you are not in the legal field, then it can be easy to miss. Lawsuit limitations, often lobbied for by large corporations, are being enacted into law. It is not unreasonable to understand why they want to limit liability. No one wants to be sued. But if you create a product or service and it causes damage to another person, then the equitable solution is to put the injured party as much back to whole as possible. Oftentimes physical injuries can’t be magically fixed “back to whole.” Therefore, the most reasonable solution is to compensate the person monetarily. Most people would be surprised to learn that the United States Chamber of Commerce has no affiliation with our government. Chambers of commerce are institutions that are set up to help businesses succeed. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Litigation Center states, “Founded in 1977, the U.S. Chamber Litigation Center fights for business at every level of the U.S. judicial system, on virtually every issue affecting business, including class actions and arbitration, labor and employment, energy, environment, securities and corporate governance, financial regulation, free speech, preemption, government contracts, and criminal law.” This sounds great if you are a business. With their influence and power, they have been able to place statutory limits on the amount of damages businesses have to pay out when the business hurts or injures someone. To be fair, if suing for every little papercut were simple and easy and with no barriers, then businesses, especially small
businesses, may go out of business. Businesses going under means less jobs…and on and on the dominoes fall. So, there must be some structure. There must be some rules to live by. I’m not rallying against businesses having tools to help them succeed. However, in our recent past, there have been lawsuits and laws enacted that have helped business at the expense of ordinary citizens. For instance, many states have enacted laws that place limits on damages caused by doctors. Malpractice caps can be devastating to a family who has been harmed by a physician’s malpractice. Additionally, laws can be enacted that may severely shorten the time in which for you to discover you or a family member has been harmed. In Arizona, you are limited to filing your claim to two years from the time the action accrued. A.R.S. § 12-542. If you miss the window, you may be precluded from ever being compensated.

While “Five Nights at Freddy’s” boasts a cast of talented actors, the film struggles to deliver a compelling horror experience. The narrative takes an excessive amount of time to progress beyond its initial setup, resulting in a sluggish first act. The remainder of the film seems to experiment with various elements—such as dream sequences, playful encounters with animatronics, and a murder mystery—but these aspects feel underdeveloped. The actors, despite their capabilities, are constrained by the film’s uneven direction and lackluster script. Furthermore, the cameos, although potentially exciting, come across as overly indulgent. This movie, even for younger audiences who might be new to the horror genre, falls short in providing the engaging, thrilling, and genuinely scary experience that can be both entertaining and a suitable introduction to the genre.
