Anti-Solar Thinking Threatens to Steer Arizona Off Course.

Arizona’s Solar Community Wants to Keep Going Forward.

We have good news and bad news.

We’ll share the bad news first: Arizona’s utility regulators voted 3-2 last month to reopen their investigation into how best to strike a sustainable economic balance between electric companies and customers with rooftop solar, whose unused energy those companies buy and resell elsewhere on the grid. That investigation had ended in 2017 after three years of painstaking deliberation, resulting in a deal whereby the state’s utilities would pay homeowners a government-set rate for the energy they export to the grid.

Crucially, that rate would decrease by 10 percent each year, however it would be locked in for 10 years, for new customers.

The commission emphasized that any forthcoming revisions would alter payment rates only for new customers, leaving existing customers and customers who go solar prior to any changes “grandfathered in” to the payment plans they signed up for. That’s a precedent that the commission has previously established and intends to respect.

Commissioner Nick Myers, who pushed for the vote, has insisted that a more drastic decrease in payments to solar homeowners is warranted in light of the solar industry’s increased size and strength since 2017. He has cast his stance against the current payment model (in industry jargon: the “resource comparison proxy export rate,” or the “RCP rate”) as a fiscally conservative opposition to what he creatively refers to as a “subsidy.”

His stance has been echoed by other conservative commissioners, including the chairman, Jim O’Connor.

“We are not back in 2014 looking to help an emerging industry gain a foothold,” O’Connor said.

Never mind footholds. The reality is that the solar industry is—and has been—hanging on by its fingertips.

The good news concerns the publiccomments section of the meeting, during which supporters of the state’s most economically and environmentally promising industry pushed back against the wrongheaded thinking that threatens to keep Arizonans stuck in the past.

The Arizonans who took the lectern—and there were many of them—conveyed the dangers posed by this backwards trend more eloquently and persuasively than we could, which is why we wanted to devote this column to reproducing those comments mostly verbatim.

Many commenters addressed what is most directly threatened by a potential overhaul of the state’s solar economics: regulatory certainty, an intangible but vital asset for any business community.

“How is anyone [...] supposed to know what decisions to rely on if they’re going to be scrapped every few years?” asked Autumn Johnson, executive director of the Arizona chapter of the Solar Energy Industries Association. “We have a different commission every two years. No one—the utilities, the ratepayers, or ancillary industries like solar— will know what to do if you can’t make up your minds.”

Robert Bulechek, an energy-efficiency consultant who advises companies on solar energy, testified from personal experience to the destructive effect of capricious regulation.

In Tucson, there have been long wait times for installations because of low staffing levels, and business owners have attributed their lack of hiring to fears that the regulatory environment will change, he said. And the ACC’s decision to reinvestigate pricing for distributed solar power is an example of government actions that cause such apprehension, he added.

“What solar company is going to hire new crews when they’re not sure if the Corporation Commission is going to severely damage the solar industry?” Bulechek asked the commissioners.

As many commenters pointed out, the effects of a potential alteration to the solar industry’s ground rules are unlikely to stay neatly isolated to their intended targets.

Sam Friedberg, a solar consultant, solar-system owner, and customer of APS, explained why commissioners should not complacently trust their own ability to contain the consequences of the rule changes they’re about to contemplate.

“We all know that a proposal that enables a lower RCP rate abruptly and unpredictably

would be devastating for future solar adoption,” Friedberg said. “The whole industry here seems to be aware of that,” referring to his fellow business owners’ grim prognoses.

Since the continuing viability of existing solar businesses depends on the attractiveness of rooftop solar to future customers, a variety of existing business models and contractual relationships are at stake in the commission’s deliberations regarding terms for future customers.

“Mr. Chairman, you said earlier that contracts signed will be honored,” Friedberg said. “There are contracts that have been signed by businesses for leases, for employee training, other costs and investments that simply wouldn’t be honored if this changes this business model.”

A Tucson business owner shared his own experiences with adverse and unpredictable regulation.

Louis Woofenden, owner of Net Zero Solar, attributes his success as an independent solar entrepreneur partly to a stable business environment and “staggering technological advances,” which were fostered by good policy at the federal and state levels. Other policies, however, have created headwinds, he said.

“I would say we persevered despite efforts by utilities to make the deal tougher,” Woofenden said.

He urged the commissioners to consider how their decisions could affect Arizona’s ability to live up to its pro-business ideals.

“I think that’s the best of what entrepreneurship and the free market can be,” he said. “You’re building a team of likeminded people, and you’re building something people want, and you’re offering it out in this little piece of marketplace that the commission has created over the years—this little sandbox inside the monopoly system that you regulate.”

Friedberg did not mince words about what was ultimately at stake in a future discussion over rate changes.

“It is a business killer; It is a job killer,” Friedberg said. “And even if that’s not the primary focus here—focusing on businesses and jobs—you can’t willfully ignore it and still claim to be looking out for the public interest.”

The erroneous idea that solar is “subsidized”

(which we dismantled in our last column) was also a subject of impassioned criticism.

Arizonans who spoke to the commission incisively exposed the absurdity of this notion, especially in light of the surrounding economic context.

Commissioners who support revising the payment model for exported solar power consistently describe that model as a “subsidy” to homeowners who have invested in a rooftop solar system.

Court Rich, an attorney who represents solar entrepreneurs in Arizona, stressed the incongruity of that description and the financial reality.

APS’s own data shows that the utility pays solar homeowners less for their surplus energy than it pays for energy from other sources.

“That’s not a subsidy,” Rich said. “That’s a great deal for ratepayers.”

Johnson (the Arizona SEIA chief ) later elaborated on the theme.

“If I sell Commissioner Myers an apple for a dollar, and he sells it to commissioner Marquez Peterson for two dollars, that’s not a subsidy,” she said.

Burechek highlighted the crucial context missing from this discussion: the subsidies enjoyed by the energy industry’s entrenched interests.

“The utilities are already being subsidized by not having to pay the cost of the health and climate harm that their pollution causes,” Burechek said. “That’s a cost on the entire population. Solar, and renewables in general, don’t have those health and climate costs. That should be recognized: that, essentially, the export rates are already not representing the true benefits of the solar industry.”

Arizona’s solar community might be in for a windy and bumpy road with these commissioners driving us toward an uncertain future. Thankfully, members of this community have shown up to serve them notice that their constituents will be there to keep them from driving into a ditch.

PHOENIX IS SELECTED AS ONE OF EIGHT CITIES FOR BLOOMBERG PHILANTHROPIES' PUBLIC ART CHALLENGE Bloomberg Philanthropies has selected Phoenix for a $1 million Public Art Challenge grant. This unique grant program supports temporary public art projects that address important local civic issues in cities nationwide. Phoenix's project, ¡Sombra! (Shade) will commission artists to create shading and cooling installations in response to extreme urban heat.

These works may include shade and cooling structures that create street-scale microclimates, installations that promote the protective beauty, comfort, and cooling power of hats and parasols, and other participatory arts experiences that provoke dialogue about rising temperatures and sustainable heat-mitigating tactics. The project will conclude with a family-friendly festival that will engage residents with these public art installations and feature activities for children, food, and music to celebrate and empower the community.

The city of Phoenix was named a finalist in June and is one of just eight winners from more than 150 project proposals received from cities in 40 U.S. states.

The project will be developed over the next two years.

MISS AMERICA 2023 ANNOUNCED AS APS ELECTRIC LIGHT PARADE GRAND MARSHAL The city of Phoenix and Arizona Public Service (APS) are excited to announce Miss America 2023 Grace Stanke as grand marshal for the 36th Annual APS Electric Light Parade.

Grace Stanke is the third Miss Wisconsin contestant to earn the title of Miss America. Stanke is spending her year traveling the country inspiring women and

advocating for STEM careers while pursuing her degree in nuclear engineering. Her goal is to dispel myths about nuclear energy, while encouraging women everywhere to chase their goals. In April of 2023, she toured the Palo Verde Generating Station, operated by APS, and located about 45 miles west of downtown Phoenix (see pictures below). Palo Verde is the country's largest power producer in the United States and all of it is 100% clean and carbon-free.

The 36th Annual APS Electric Light Parade takes place Saturday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m., which just so happens to be World Nuclear Energy Day and is the perfect tie to this year's parade theme is “It's Electric!"

ARIZONA’S LARGEST AND LONGEST-RUNNING ARTIST STUDIO TOUR, HIDDEN IN THE HILLS, RETURNS FOR ITS 27TH YEAR DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS OF NOVEMBER: FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17 TO 19 AND NOVEMBER 24 TO 26. This year’s free, self-guided tour features 164 artists at 41 studios throughout North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree.

Two Scottsdale artists have their work featured in the event’s four-color, glossy artist directory. Ceramic artist Sharon Albrektsen’s fanciful sculpture, “Bee Free,” graces the directory cover. The surreal piece depicts a fairytale-like woman setting a bee free. And glass artist Jacki Cohen’s bright, colorful “Blaze” wall panel is featured on the directory’s back cover.

A NARRATIVE ARTIST WHO LOVES CLAY Sharon Albrektsen grew up in an artistic family who encouraged her to explore her imagination. Being dyslexic, she struggled to read, but she thrived in her art classes. She earned her BA and MA from Adams State College in Colorado, and MFA at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She owned and operated a coffee

house, and she also taught art in grades from kindergarten through college.

“I am a narrative artist who is in love with clay,” Albrektsen says. “Clay gives me the placidity to capture my thoughts when it is wet and permanency of the form when fired. My work is layered with meanings of who I am now and who I was.”

Using borrowed symbols from the Christian religion, other cultures visited in her travels, and those from history, she combines all to make her own personal symbolism.

Inspired by the beauty of nature, she creates functional and decorative glass art.

“I love color, vibrancy, and bold design. These are what ignite my soul and fuel my spirit,” she says.

In addition to incorporating circles and other symbols into her work that celebrate life, she often mixes in dichroic glass, which is a metallic glass that sparkles and shines.

“Previously, I made a vague reference to the figure in my imagery. Lately, the figure has become of grave importance to the story-telling nature of my work,” she says.

Cohen’s wall panel “Blaze,” is featured on the back cover of the artist directory cover. Measuring 12 inches wide by 32 inches high, the stunning fused glass piece was inspired by the beauty of Arizona’s sunrises and sunsets.

Albrektsen will exhibit and sell her work at glass artist Sandy Pendleton’s Studio No. 22 in Cave Creek.

Cohen will exhibit and sell her new work at Wesley Hartin Art Studio No. 8 in Carefree.

The event, which has become an annual pilgrimage for many, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., culminating in a breathtaking solar illumination of the Great Seal of the United States through the ellipses of the five military service pillars at the Anthem Veterans Memorial. This awe-inspiring phenomenon will take place at 11:11 a.m., paying homage to the Armistice.

This year's theme, “Honor. Salute. Support,” encapsulates the sentiments of the community towards its veterans, active-duty personnel, and their families. The event will commence early in the day with several pre-ceremony activities: From 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Tennessee Grill will offer

a special Veterans Day menu for those wishing to enjoy breakfast. Concurrently, attendees can revel in music and videos on the LED screens, highlighting the stories and experiences of Vietnam War-era veterans.

A noteworthy segment of the event is the pinning ceremony for Vietnam War era veterans and surviving spouses. In association with the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration and Daisy Mountain Veterans, the ceremony will be awarding the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Vietnam War pin. This acknowledges the sacrifices made between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975.

Furthermore, charitable efforts will also be in full swing.

The Youth for Troops tent on the South Lawn will be hosting activities from 8:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., encouraging attendees to decorate cards and boxes to send to our troops overseas, fostering a sense of community involvement. They are also conducting a collection drive aiming to prepare 800 holiday care packages for deployed troops. Additionally, Daisy Mountain Veterans will be accepting donations for their Holiday Helpers

program, supporting local families in need during the festive season.

The main ceremony, taking place on the North and South Lawns, will feature special tributes honoring the United States Coast Guard, marking significant anniversaries like the end of the Vietnam War, the armistice of the Korean War, and the establishment of the US Naval Women Aviators. CWO Michael Tapp (USCG, Ret.), with 27 years of dedicated service to the Coast Guard, is set to deliver the much-anticipated keynote address.

As the morning progresses, all eyes will be on the Anthem Veterans Memorial at 11:11 a.m. The sun's rays will pierce through the ellipses of the five military branch pillars, casting a pristine spotlight on the Great Seal of the United States, surrounded by 5400 veteran commemorative pavers in the newly expanded Circle of Honor.

State's Tallest Fresh-cut Christmas Tree Arrives at Outlets North Phoenix Photo courtesy of Outlets North Phoenix AN ICONIC TRADITION RETURNS AS ARIZONA IS SET TO WELCOME ITS TALLEST FRESH-CUT CHRISTMAS TREE ON FRIDAY, NOV. 3 AT OUTLETS NORTH PHOENIX. This year marks the 22nd consecutive year that the shopping destination, previously known as Outlets at Anthem, will host this majestic symbol of the holiday season.

Standing at an impressive 70-feet tall and 20-feet wide, this year's tree has traveled all the way from a specialty tree lot located on the California/Oregon border. It is a spectacle in its own right – arriving at 6:30 a.m. on a 40-foot flatbed truck and being carefully unloaded and placed into its dedicated spot by none other than the jolly Santa Claus, making his entrance aboard a Daisy Mountain firetruck.

If weather conditions are favorable, eager onlookers can watch as an industrial crane expertly hoists the tree into its vertical splendor at approximately 7:45 a.m.

Decking out such a colossal tree is no small feat. The grand fir will dazzle with over 1.5 miles of LED lights, which equates to around 10,000 glowing bulbs. Furthermore, approximately 5,000 ornaments and bows will be meticulously arranged to enhance its natural beauty. And, paying homage to Arizona, the tree will be crowned with a 3-foot tall copper star, symbolizing the state's official metal.

For early birds, live coverage opportunities can commence as early as 5 a.m., given prior scheduling. Alongside the grandeur of the tree's arrival and placement, attendees can also delight in visuals such as tours of Santa's village, oversized ornaments and presents, a life-sized sleigh, melodic performances by a children's choir singing festive carols, and the heartwarming sight of families, especially children, reveling in the yuletide spirit.

Once fully adorned, the decorated tree will tip the scales at nearly 4 tons. A dedicated team of 10 experts will devote over 120 hours, spanning two weeks, and use articulating boom lifts to perfect its festive appearance.

The event will take place at Outlets North Phoenix, located at 4250 W. Anthem Way. Convenient parking is available in the east lot, right in front of the food court and parallel to I-17.

To ensure its freshness throughout the season, the tree will be securely placed in a custom-made seven-foot deep well and treated with roughly 120 gallons of fire retardant. For added stability, especially during those gusty Arizona days, six industrial guy wires will be strategically positioned.

BY FAMED MUSICIAN DUKE ELLINGTON, BILLIE HOLIDAY IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAZZ VOCALISTS OF ALL TIME. Now Valley audiences can see a remarkable recreation of one of Holiday’s last performances before her untimely death.

“Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” is onstage now through Nov. 26 at The Phoenix Theatre Company in Central Phoenix. The production kicks off the 104th season of shows at Arizona’s oldest producing theatre.

In the Tony-award nominated musical, audiences get an up close and intimate look at the iconic vocalist. The show takes place in 1959 in a seedy Philadelphia bar just four months before Holliday’s tragic death. “Lady Day” includes soulful and heart-wrenching songs from her extraordinary music catalog and touches on her battles with alcoholism and drug abuse in her later years.

Holiday’s canon includes recognizable songs like “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.” The one-woman show features a live band on stage and Yolanda London as Holiday. This is not the first time London has portrayed Holiday at The Phoenix Theatre Company. She was part of the heralded 2016 production of “Lady Day” and has since played Holiday in productions across the country including shows in Alabama and Pennsylvania.

This will be her fifth time in the role.

“I would definitely say I feel connected to Billie Holiday in many ways,” says London. “I find her music incredibly moving and emotional. I also feel for her. This production is especially poignant for London who will be performing the story at the same age Holiday was when she died. “I think, now more than ever, I’m ready to tell her story,” she says.

In her main stage directorial debut at The Phoenix Theatre Company, Chanel Bragg feels a tremendous responsibility to share the highs and lows of the prolific vocalist’s life.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to tell this story and to pay a great deal of respect and reverence to the legend with introspection through the Black female lens,” says Bragg. “I have always held a deeply personal connection to Billie Holiday and the universality of her story of both joy and immense pain. I hope this production will leave audiences as enamored with her as I have been since I was a young child.”

Bragg started her professional career at The Phoenix Theatre Company in 2010 when she made her stage debut in “Hairspray.” She has since performed in countless shows at the theatre and co-founded two initiatives: The Soul of Broadway performance troupe in 2009 and The United Colours of Arizona Theatre in 2016 with an emphasis to inspire diversity, equity, and true inclusion in the local arts community.

“There are a lot of strong emotions in this show - love, pain, and the ability of people to lean on each other when times are tough,” Bragg adds. “Billie was not afraid to take risks. She was a truth teller, a disrupter, and an unmatched artist. I am proud to be able to bring her story to Valley audiences again.”

The day commenced with an illuminating tour of the Footprint Center.

I

n the North Valley, a young boy named Carter Cunnius is turning his past challenges into a mission of joy for other kids. This 8-year-old, with twinkling eyes and an unstoppable spirit, is the mastermind behind a heartwarming toy drive that is making waves in the community and brightening the days of children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Carter’s journey began in a way none of us would want.

When he was only 4 years old, his doctors shared the news that he had a type of cancer known as leukemia.

His days became filled with hospital visits, treatments, and many moments that required extraordinary bravery.

After a challenging battle of two and a half years, Carter triumphantly emerged, being declared cancer-free one year ago.

Carter, now a third grader at Deer Valley Unified School District’s (DVUSD) Norterra Canyon School, is inspiring not just adults, but his classmates too.

Together, they’ve been gathering toys by the hundreds, establishing a tower that symbolizes hope, kindness, and youthful solidarity. This year marks the third of Carter’s initiative, and it’s not just about collecting toys, but also about remembering and honoring friends made along the way. Last year’s drive paid tribute to a young friend, Junior, who sadly lost his fight with cancer.

In Carter’s words, the best part about organizing the toy drive each year is “knowing kids will feel loved and it will take their mind off of what they’re going through.” And his top pick for a universal toy? LEGOs, as he believes “everyone loves LEGOs!”

However, his experience in the hospital wasn’t forgotten.

During one particularly tough week, when an infection kept him bedridden, Carter experienced the boredom and sadness that can come with long hospital stays. A small box of LEGOs, which became a source of creativity and escape, sparked an idea in his thoughtful mind.

His mom, Marie Cunnius, stands proudly by his side, her perspective on life profoundly altered by their journey.

She emphasizes the importance of valuing what truly matters in life and encourages others to always accept help when it is genuinely offered. Marie believes that no family should navigate the challenging journey of childhood cancer alone.

“My mom and I built it and took it apart so many times. I was so sad, and my mom kept making up games for us to play. I still had a lot of unopened gifts at home and told my mom that I wanted to donate them so no kid would feel the way I did during that week,” says Carter.

he most common question I’m being asked is, “What is going to happen to mortgage rates?”

If you’ve been following the headlines, then you have probably even seen that rates have recently reached their highest level in over two decades. Yep, two decades!

That can feel overwhelming if you’re thinking about making a move. You may even be wondering whether or not you should delay your plans. Before you panic, here is what you really need to know.

HOW HIGHER MORTGAGE RATES IMPACT YOU There’s no denying mortgage rates are higher right now than they were in recent years. And, when rates are up, that affects overall home affordability. Here’s how: the higher the rate, the more expensive it is to borrow money when you buy a home. That’s because, as rates trend up, your monthly mortgage payment for your future home loan also increases.

The Urban Institute explains how this is impacting buyers and sellers right now: “When mortgage rates go up, monthly housing payments on new purchases also increase. For potential buyers, increased monthly payments can reduce the share of available affordable homes . . . Additionally, higher interest rates mean fewer homes on the market, as existing homeowners have an incentive to hold on to their home to keep their low interest rate.”

Basically, some people are deciding to put their plans on hold because of where mortgage rates are right now. But is that really a good strategy?

Make your home show ready. This means decluttering, making repairs, and staging your home to appeal to buyers.

Painting Preserves Cherished Memory

ary Alice Warsco could no longer remember how to dress herself, make coffee, or even what she ate for lunch. Dementia made day-to-day tasks too confusing. But when reminiscing about her childhood farm in Michigan, the 92-year-old had perfect clarity.

“I instantly pictured in my head what this memory might have looked like for her,” says Irvine. “And I thought — a painting! So, I reached out to our volunteer department, and they found an amazing Hospice of the Valley volunteer to preserve this special memory on canvas.”

During a recent visit with her Hospice of the Valley nurse, Emily Irvine, she shared in vivid detail a family hardship from long ago. One summer when she was just a young girl, her father and brother were seriously injured in a car accident and unable to harvest their fields of ripened crops. Suddenly, Warsco and her mother heard a distant rumble, growing ever louder. They raced to the front porch to discover a long line of tractors slowly making their way toward them. “I had never seen so many tractors in my whole life,” Warsco recalls.

The eager artist was Mandy Richards, a Scottsdale resident who loves volunteering her time to visit patients and families. “I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get started!” she exclaims. “One of my favorite things about art is how it evokes a feeling. I was honored to create a way for Mary to visualize this touching memory.”

The artwork was framed with a descriptive label on the back so future generations would know the story behind it. When Emily and Mandy went to Mary’s Peoria home to present the painting, they saw her eyes light up… and then shine with tears of remembrance. To everyone’s delight, she immediately began telling the story again, this time holding Richards' precious painting tightly in her arms.

Mandy’s painting depicts the kindness of neighbors on their way to Mary’s family farm to save their summer crops.

“It felt almost sacred,” Irvine reflects. “Mary had lost so much of her memory, but she still had that one. These are the moments that make life and work very rewarding.”

A Deep Dive into Arizona’s Judicial Hierarchy

n Arizona we have a hierarchy of courts. Each county has a superior court. Superior courts are courts of jurisdiction over all crimes, civil matters, family law matters, probate matters and juvenile matters. Arizona’s superior courts don’t oversee any federal matters.

Arizona also has many courts of limited jurisdiction. The courts of limited jurisdiction in Arizona are city, municipal, magistrate, and justice courts. These courts are called courts of limited jurisdiction because they are limited in scope to the type and kind of matters that they oversee.

For example, courts of limited jurisdiction cannot hear felony matter cases. Those cases must be held in the superior courts.

Arizona also has a number of various different administrative courts and governing bodies. Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has their own administrative court. That court is limited in scope to just hearing drivers license issues or possible suspensions.

Superior court judges are all law trained (lawyers) and have likely practiced law at some point in their career prior to becoming a judge. All city and magistrate court judges are law trained as well.

However, justice court judges may not be law trained. Justices of the peace and their jurisdictions are concepts that stem from when Arizona was just a territory. In rural America (the wild west) it wasn’t always possible to find a lawyer to act as a judge in every little town. However, it was still necessary to administer justice or have a person who could settle disputes arising from the local folks in the area.

All justice court judges are elected. There is no requirement for the judge to be trained legally. Some of the justices of the peace are former attorneys and some are not.

The justice court judges jurisdiction often times is concurrent with a particular cities jurisdiction.

In essence, the judicial system overlaps.

The justice courts are also courts of limited jurisdiction in civil matters due to an Arizona State Constitutional limitation on the dollar amount those courts are allowed to adjudicate. Arizona Constitution Article 6 § 32 provides that civil jurisdiction of limited jurisdiction courts shall not exceed the sum of $10,000, exclusive of interest and costs. Lawsuits involving dollar amounts exceeding $10,000 have to originate in the county superior court or in certain instances in a federal court.

Appeals from a limited jurisdiction court can be made to the superior court in its respective jurisdiction.

Arizona also has two divisions of courts of appeals that usually hears appeals from the superior courts. Division 1 is based in Phoenix and Division 2 is based in Tucson.

Those appellate courts hear cases within their respective divisions. The appeals courts can hear appeals cases or special action cases.

Finally, in instances where a party wants to appeal the appeals court decision, they can take the case up to the Arizona Supreme Court. Unless there are U.S. Constitutional issues to be resolved, the Arizona Supreme Court is the last stop for most all cases that get that far. Having a working knowledge of Arizona’s court system can be helpful.

ON HULU

“No One Will Save You” A young woman's home is invaded by extraterrestrials.

When a genre film addresses trauma while staying true to its genre elements, it's a treat, and “No One Will Save You” accomplishes this. For 90 minutes, it lives up to the phrase "all killer, no filler" with an active series of escalating set pieces and tension. In a movie with almost no dialogue, Kaitlyn Denver and director/ writer Brian Duffield do an impressive job of letting the actions speak for themselves while depicting the isolation our character feels. The big reveal is slightly half-baked and causes an odd ending, but not in a way that ruins the movie.

Combine this with some stellar creature effects, and you have a solid, exciting, and even scary creature feature.

IN THEATERS “The Creator” A soldier in the near future becomes the unintentional protector of a robot girl who is more powerful than it seems.

“The Creator” is unfortunately a victim of bad timing given the current debate around AI, and it risks having its message being misinterpreted. Fundamentally, Gareth Edwards uses it as a metaphor for U.S. militarization in events such as the Vietnam War, and how it executes that will be up to the beholder, though I found it enthralling. Much of that is thanks to Edwards' direction, which brings a combination of technology and natural beauty to its world, and the lead performances of John David Washington (with his dry charisma bringing heart to the character of Joshua) and newcomer Madeline Yuna Voyles (incredibly gifted at delivering a balance between emotional and robotic). I also greatly appreciate the tone of the film.

It manages to stay true to its general message and idea without falling apart, though at times the imagery can risk coming off as exploitative or empty. It also mostly underuses its supporting cast, aside from Ken Watanabe's stellar work.

Ultimately, “The Creator” still comes through as a breath of fresh air in the modern blockbuster sphere that shows what director Edwards is capable of.

two, with more emphasis on gratuitous gore. However, the newest installment is just dull without any real shocking nature to it. None of the five shorts have anything to say about the 1980s or the sort of fetishization the decade has received in recent years. Nothing about the shorts makes them particularly '80s, aside from the aesthetic choices in the overarching story. This movie could be set in any decade, and it would change little. As stated before, this isn't exactly a scary movie but instead just bores, which is the worst thing you can do in this genre. Not one of the ideas is given the time to explore; it just shows up and then is done with. By the end of the movie, you just feel like you wasted time.

Essentially an acting showcase for everyone involved, this new adaptation of the classic story is like a play properly translated into film without losing its original touch. Each character is complex, with the actors delivering stellar performances to match each character's different shades of gray, namely in Jason Clarke and the late Lance Reddick's work, which commands your attention. All the while, Friedkin knows how to shoot and edit to ensure their performances have maximum impact. It's a film that demands your attention and will keep you engaged throughout. It's one last gift from a master of filmmaking.
