Anthem’s Annual Veterans Day Ceremony Salutes Nation’s Heroes on November 11 THE ANTHEM COMMUNITY COUNCIL INVITES THE PUBLIC TO ATTEND THE ANNUAL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT 10 A.M., THURSDAY, NOV. 11, AT THE ANTHEM VETERANS MEMORIAL. The program will honor the service of all veterans and their families. The ceremony concludes at 11:11 a.m., in honor of Armistice, with the solar illumination of the glass mosaic of the Great Seal of the United States through the five armed services pillar ellipses (weather permitting). The ceremony also marks the tenth anniversary of the Anthem Veterans Memorial (AVM), and as such, will come with added fanfare. Dedicated on Veterans Day in 2011, the memorial received Arizona Historic Landmark status in 2012. That same year, the memorial was the recipient of the Arizona Public Works Project of the Year Award and the Grand Award–Best Engineering and Environmental Consulting Project from the American Consulting Engineers Companies. The AVM also is designated as a Vietnam War Commemoration Partner. CEREMONY PARTICIPANTS • Admiral Tom Fargo (USN, Retired) will serve as the keynote speaker. • Lt. Col. Mark Clifford (USAF, Retired)
will present the Veteran’s Perspective. • Dr. Timothy Swindle, director of the University of Arizona Space Institute and the Arizona Space Grant Consortium, will provide a brief history about the extensive role Arizona has played in the space program prior to the U.S. Space Force dedication into the Memorial. The United States Space Force (USSF), the newest branch of the Department of the Defense, will be dedicated into the Anthem Veterans Memorial with the implementation of the service flag.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the AVM, the original five branch pillars will be rededicated by local veterans including: Major General Lou Prentiss (USA, Ret.); Chuck Hale (Sgt., USMC), SCPO Darlene Gonzales (USN, Ret.), Colonel Tom Kirk (USAF, Ret.), and Lt. Commander Stephen Goodman (USCG, Ret.). • Lt. Colonel Amber Cargile (USAF, Ret.) will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies and the Rev. Mac McElroy will provide the invocation. • Rear Admiral Ron Tucker (USN, Ret.), the founder of the AVM, will provide a look back on the last ten years. • Musical Theatre of Anthem and ProMusica Arizona, both of which have
performed at ceremonies since 2011, will provide special music.
The event will conclude with a military flyover (pending final Luke AFB approval) and the solar spotlight at 11:11 a.m. LOGISTICS AND DIRECTIONS TO THE CEREMONY • The upper area of Community Park, including the parking lot nearest the AVM, will be closed all day Nov. 10 and will reopen by 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. Only speakers and ceremony participants, law enforcement and security, and ADA parking will be available in this lot on Nov. 11. Drive-through drop-offs for ADA visitors will be available. • Overflow parking will be available in the other two lots of Community Park, at Boulder Creek High School (a short walk away), or at neighboring commercial plazas (please park the furthest distance from store entrances, out of respect for their patrons). • The ceremony will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and will last approximately 75 minutes. Prior to the ceremony, videos recapping the last 10 years of the AVM and honoring our community’s veterans will be shown on the two, two-story LED screens.
• The AVM will be secured and not accessible Nov. 10 or Nov. 11. During the ceremony and solar spotlight, event attendees must remain seated and may not approach the memorial. The AVM will reopen to the public at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Nov. 11. • Seating is limited; attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. No pop-up tents will be allowed. • As this will be a large event (even though outdoors), mask wearing is strongly recommended per CDC guidelines, to ensure the safest event possible and reduce community spread of COVID-19.
The Anthem Veterans Memorial is located in Anthem Community Park, 41703 N. Gavilan Peak Parkway. Take I-17 to exit 229. Turn east (right) onto Anthem Way, and then turn south (right) onto Gavilan Peak Parkway. The Memorial is on the left at the four-way stop signs and entrance to the park.

AFTER YET ANOTHER BLAZING HOT SUMMER THAT SOMEHOW MANAGED TO LAST WELL INTO OCTOBER, WE’VE FINALLY TURNED THE CORNER AND HIT THAT PEAK ARIZONA WEATHER. What better way to celebrate our return to the great outdoors than with a fun, community event like the 3rd Annual Fireside Cornhole Tournament? This is a lowpressure, high-fun event.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation Pays Off the Mortgages on the Homes of Two Fallen First Responders from Phoenix THE TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION IS HONORED TO ANNOUNCE THAT IT HAS PAID, IN-FULL, THE MORTGAGES ON THE HOMES OF 50 FALLEN FIRST RESPONDER AND GOLD STAR FAMILIES FROM ACROSS THE NATION. This includes the families of firefighters Richard Telles and Brian John Beck Jr., both from Phoenix. Telles lost his battle with occupational esophageal cancer on January 17, 2019. He was 44. Hired for the Phoenix Fire Department Class of 2006, he served with the department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, Crystal, and his two children, Clifford, 18, and Aubryn, 16. Beck Jr., 31, passed away in the line of duty on May 19, 2019, due to a job-related malignant melanoma. A thirdgeneration firefighter, Beck Jr. was an eight-year veteran with the Phoenix Fire Department, while mostly working at Fire Station 33 in North Phoenix. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, and his three children, Emery Olivia (7), Evie Sue (4), and Brian John Beck III (2). This announcement is the largest one-day mortgage payoff in Tunnel to Towers history and was made possible by the outpouring of support the foundation received as America observed the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Across the country, Americans showed their compassion for our nation’s heroes and support for The Tunnel to Towers Foundation through the organization’s Never Forget programs (Never Forget Walk, Never Forget Concert, and NYC 5K Run and Walk). Because of that, 50 families across the nation will never have to make another mortgage payment again.

Rhapsody Music is Set To Inspire North Phoenix Like Never Before RHAPSODY MUSIC MIGHT BE 12 YEARS INTO PROVIDING MUSIC LESSONS, INSTRUMENT RENTALS AND MORE TO THE ANTHEM AND NORTH PHOENIX AREA, BUT ITS NEXT CHAPTER IS JUST BEGINNING. Last month, they were able to finally cut the ribbon with the Anthem Chamber to celebrate the opening of their new location, just south of the Anthem Outlets. But not without one wild story to get there. “We had made the decision to move right as the pandemic was beginning in March 2020,” says owner Sean Maplethorpe. “It was such an uncertain time for everyone. As our doors were being closed, we were packing while redoing our entire business model to a virtual concept to stay in business. It was crazy. Once the move was complete in June, we had an exciting new building that was twice as big as our last location. But there wasn’t a single note of music to be heard.” While the virtual lessons helped sustain Rhapsody Music through the rest of 2020, they still couldn’t wait to share their new location with the community. That day finally happened on October 23 where the community was treated to a re-grand opening of Rhapsody Music. Hundreds of people turned out to check out the new space with live music, food, giveaways,

special deals and more, with many deals that are continuing through the holidays to celebrate. “The ‘RE’ in the re-grand opening really stands for Rhapsody Enhanced,” says marketing consultant, Brian Kunnari. “Everything about this location is better.” “The practice rooms are now twice the size with vaulted ceilings, which really allows space for our students and instructors to really learn and inspire each other during their lessons,” says General Manager, Mike Tuttle. “We also now have large classrooms for group learning and a band room that is over four times the size of our last location.” While Rhapsody is known for teaching private lessons for nearly any instrument you can think of, the added space for Rhapsody’s Rock Band program has allowed the offering to expand into classical ensembles, jazz combos, brass bands and more. “One of the favorite parts of Rhapsody is our Rock Band and Performance Ensemble programs,” says Tuttle. “Students sign up for a once-a-week, 10-week commitment to form a band, rehearse and then perform to an audience.” “I have been playing bass on stage nearly my whole life and to see these students
experience the excitement of playing music to a live crowd still excites me,” says Pete Rose, Rhapsody’s Rock Band Instructor. “There’s no other feeling like it.” Rhapsody’s new Gig Band program is the next level iteration that sees top student bands opening for professional concerts in the area and around Phoenix. “Our partnership with T2 Presents has really opened up a new door for our band program,” says Tuttle. “Students are getting to perform for huge crowds that even some professional musicians don’t see until well into their career. It’s been so rewarding for some of our tenured students and us.”

While the sky’s the limit for what’s next, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed. “Our instructors are the heart of this business. When you dive into their backgrounds, many who play professionally to this day, they are taking their years of knowledge and transferring that to new musicians in the community,” says Tuttle. “Our motto is we offer music experiences for all ages, all levels, and all styles,” says Maplethorpe. “While some shops cater to the younger musician, or maybe just focus on classical music, we offer something for everyone. We’ve had seniors picking up a guitar for the first time, fourth grade rock bands tearing up the stage, bluegrass bands with every age you can think of participating. It’s what makes Rhapsody so special.”

City News DVUSD Recognizes Desert Mountain School’s Dr. Schwarting as Principal of the Year DEER VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (DVUSD) RECENTLY NAMED DR. JOANN SCHWARTING AS THE DISTRICT’S 2021 PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR. Dr. Schwarting started in DVUSD in 2005 and is in her fifth year at Desert Mountain School as the principal. During this past year, Dr. Schwarting helped both district and campus administrators have a successful year despite the challenges that COVID-19 presented. For example, she helped co-create effective plans for COVID-19 mitigation and supported the COVID-19 model school set-ups across the district. When asked what it means to be a principal today, Dr. Schwarting says, “Principals today must have a collaborative spirit. As they collectively develop a vision
of the school, they must also trust and support the community as they work toward meeting the vision. Being a principal today also means that you can develop and sustain trusting relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members. You have to be truly invested in the well-being of all you serve.” One of Dr. Schwarting’s colleagues described her by saying, “JoAnn has been the resource of all resources to help us navigate teaching in our COVID world. Creating the document that we used to guide our decisions was just the beginning. Jo took every call and text from every principal and took the time to answer as if we had the most important question ever. She made us feel valued. She led with empathy when talking with schools who were struggling with anything and everything. She was a listening ear with a warm caring heart. There wasn’t a question that she didn’t follow up with if she didn’t know the answer. Without her leadership, kindness, problem-solving and calm attitude, I am certain that we would have been more stressed than we already were this past year.” Dr. Gary Zehrbach, Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Leadership & Services, says, “Dr. Schwarting was instrumental in helping more than 30,000 students from the DVUSD community experience in-person school for most of the 2020-21 school year. Her leadership and efforts went above and beyond.”
“I am honored beyond belief,” says Dr. Schwarting. “The 2020-21 school year required unprecedented campus leadership, and there isn’t an administrator in the district that doesn’t deserve to be principal of the year this year. I am also profoundly thankful for the Desert Mountain staff. Because of the collaborative nature of our staff, their experience, and their willingness to do whatever it takes to serve our community and students, I was able to serve district-wide on the Return to School Safely committee. Make a Difference in the Lives of Foster Children This Holiday Season By Tamara Webb, Director of Operations, OCJ Kids AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES, THE FOCUS OF OCJ KIDS REMAINS THE SAME: TO IMPACT ARIZONA’S FOSTER CHILDREN AND CREATE MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME. Since 2006, OCJ Kids has provided opportunities for our community to support Arizona’s foster children who currently live in group homes. Arizona currently has more than 14,000 children in the foster care system. Many of those children do not live with a traditional foster family but in group homes. OCJ Kids works with the group homes and with the
Department of Child Safety offices to bring hope to these children. As children enter the foster care system, they often come with only the clothes on their back. From the moment children in Arizona enter foster care until the time they leave the system, OCJ Kids is involved. Diapers, wipes, pajamas, hygiene products and clothing are provided as they enter foster care. Transition suitcases filled with supplies and resources are provided to teens as they leave the system at 18. Every year, OCJ Kids hosts a career development fair, cowboy camp, back to school celebration, and Christmas bowling party. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OCJ Kids never stopped working to provide essential supplies to these children. On December 11 – 12, OCJ Kids will host the annual One Bright Star Christmas Bowling Party. Over the two days, more than 500 foster children and teens will have the opportunity to bowl, visit with Santa, and receive gifts from their wish list. Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour Set for Last Two Weekends of The Month Images Courtesy of the Sonoran Arts League and Jon Linton THE NONPROFIT SONORAN ARTS LEAGUE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT ARIZONA’S LARGEST AND LONGEST-RUNNING ARTIST STUDIO TOUR, HIDDEN IN THE HILLS (HITH), IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS OF THIS MONTH: FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 20 AND 21 AND NOVEMBER 26, 27 AND 28. This year’s free, self-guided tour features 191 artists at 45 private studios throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale. The League also announced that Jon Linton’s “Barrio Viejo” photograph of the front entrance of a colorful adobe home will grace the cover of this year’s highly collectible four-color artist directory. Linton is an acclaimed photographer and activist who advocates for the homeless and other underserved populations. He is best known for his “I Have a Name” street photography series as well as his serene and stunning black and white landscape photography. “Jon’s photograph captured the sentiment of our 25th annual event beautifully,” says Jane Boggs, a gourd artist and studio host who serves as the event’s co-chair. “We are eager to welcome collectors and art enthusiasts to our studios for what is sure to be a memorable artist studio tour.” HITH co-chair and mixed media sculptor/studio host
Joanie Wolter says that the cover art selection is also significant because it is the first time a photographer’s work has been featured on the artist directory cover. “We had many strong entries, but ‘Barrio Viejo’ really stood out,” Wolter says. “It conveys a warm, welcoming message that resonated with us, and we’re thrilled that Jon will exhibit his new work during the tour this year.” JON LINTON: SEEKING TRUTH THROUGH HIS CAMERA LENS This is Linton’s first year participating in Hidden in the Hills. The talented artist will exhibit and sell his work at painter Stuart Yankell’s studio in Cave Creek. A Phoenix resident and well-known activist, Linton has been immersed in the art world for more than two decades. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University with a liberal arts degree in 1987, he went on to work for Ralph Lauren in New York City. A displaced Chicagoan, the former art magazine and book publisher has called Phoenix home for nearly three decades. “Barrio Viejo” is atypical for Linton, who primarily exhibits black and white photography. Linton says he was surprised and humbled to be chosen as the cover artist for this year’s milestone Hidden in the Hills event. “I’m honored and also moved by having my work highlighted in such a prominent way,” he says. “By virtue of being selected as the Hidden in the Hills cover artist, I am already changing the trajectory of my career. I’m now inspired to expand my body of work to include additional imagery in color, and I’m looking

The Cave Creek Museum will offer demonstrations of its stamp mill on the second Saturday of each month through May 2022 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Evelyn Johnson, interim executive director, says the museum will start up its incredible stamp mill, water tower, mineral panning, blacksmithing and more for these monthly events. The Cave Creek Museum will benefit from an evening spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Tuesday, November 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. The dinner will be held at Harold’s Corral, located at 6895 E. The holidays can be both enjoyable and stressful. The hustle and bustle may cause fatigue and overstimulation in someone living with dementia, leading to confusion, anxiety, or agitation. Caregivers may become overwhelmed, particularly with the additional challenges posed by COVID-19. Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Team shares ways to modify traditional holiday celebrations so they continue to bring joy. • Try to maintain routine as much as possible. • Keep expectations realistic and give yourself permission to do only what you can reasonably accomplish. Ask family and friends for help so there is time to do shopping, cooking or just rest. • Be flexible. Perhaps celebrate with brunch if your loved one is usually tired or anxious later in the day. Allow him/her to direct the flow of the day. If he/she needs a nap, honor that need. • Keep gatherings small (three to five people) and simple. Help others understand that decisions regarding in-person and virtual (phone or video calls) celebrations will focus on whatever is best to keep your person safe and comfortable. • Do not talk in front of the person with dementia as if he/she is not present. Do not argue, contradict, or question. Avoid explanations that may overwhelm. Update others on changes so they can adjust their communication styles to fit the person’s current abilities. • Develop a ritual to honor the person living with dementia — maybe serve a favorite dish this person prepared in the past and give everyone the recipe. Share favorite stories that involve the person. • Provide soft and sweet foods (ice cream is always a good choice). • To bring joy with sensory stimulation, choose ways that honor the lifelong preferences of the person with
dementia and bring comfort. Choose experiences associated with the holiday — songs, traditional foods, the smell of seasonal potpourri or spices, holiday stories or photos. The best gifts are often your time and focused attention. Simply listen to caregivers and offer opportunities for respite, even if it’s an hour or two of downtime. For the person living with dementia, gentle touch, conversation, and a comforting presence are reassuring. And because time is even more precious during the holiday season, Hospice of the Valley’s support groups for dementia caregivers are available on Zoom from the comfort of home. All are welcome to join these no-cost sessions: • Tuesdays at 10 a.m., join Dr. Maribeth Gallagher, Dementia Program director, for a short practice to help relax and refresh, then discuss your heartfelt concerns as a caregiver. • Wednesdays at noon, experienced social worker Nicole Crothers discusses the challenges and rewards of providing care for a person living with dementia. I’VE LIVED IN NORTH PHOENIX FOR 17 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the people here are so friendly and down to earth, and the weather is so conducive to creating beautiful photographs. I’ve been a commercial still-life, advertising, and celebrity portrait photographer since 1964 and, before moving to North Phoenix, most of the “magic” took place in my New York City studio for thirty years. (You can see my work at spindelvisions.com.) A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… working on numerous book compilation projects of my photography. I’m currently editing three unique books. One contains the photographs I took of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who I was fortunate to know and photograph, at what is believed to be the last recording session of their Double Fantasy album. The second book contains photographs and products I created for the New York Yankees, MLB, and other major league teams over a 25-year span. How lucky can a guy be to have been buddies with these baseball icons? Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford,
Phil Rizzuto, Duke Snider, Willie Mays, Ralph Branca, Bobby Thomson and Joe Garagiola are all icons of the game I was able to call friends. When asked about these special relationships, I’ve always said that I felt (and still feel) like I’m “a kid in a candy store,” which is a part of the third book’s title that I’m seeking a publisher for: “Just A Kid in The Candy Store of Life.” It contains my introspective celebrity studio portraits of the “precious people” I’ve cultivated very special relationships with and the funny and serendipitous “small world” stories that are connected to how I met them and the other entertaining experiences we’ve had over the course of our friendships. I also have special friendships with Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Eli Wallach, Jerry Stiller, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Vincent Price. Outside of my books, I can be found preparing photography files for special projects such as exclusive auctions, interviews for TV specials, news features, and magazines, enjoying time with my wife and dog, and helping my wife get things off the top shelf in the kitchen.
THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE…sitting in our backyard with my wife, and dog Sasha (on my lap), relaxing, and smelling the fresh air. Added perfection: taking a long drive with my wife to see the picturesque scenic beauty of this area and other more distant places such as Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, and Sedona.
MY FAMILY… consists of my wife Barbara, who I met in college. We convinced our daughter Joyce Rockwood to move here from L.A. She’s a gut health and detoxification expert and health coach. Our son, Jeff, lives in New York with his wife Caroline and their two dogs. He’s the director of an art program for a group of seniors and young adults with disabilities, co-owner of a new and thriving music shop, a musician, and his original paintings are displayed in galleries and available for private sale. I was the second born of four children and have two remaining sisters on the East Coast.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL BUSINESS TO VISIT IS... my local Ace Hardware store. The employees are very friendly and courteous.
I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… re-runs of my favorite shows! My top favorite is The Rifleman with Chuck Connors. My wife and I were friends with Chuck for many years. MY LIFE… is active. When people find out I’m 80 they say, “Aren’t you supposed to be retired?” I just tell them, “Nope.” The only “re” I know is “re-location,” which I did when I moved with my wife, Barbara, from New York to Anthem. Creative people don’t stop doing what they love to do. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED… was from my parents who shared with me, “Treat people the way you want them to treat you.” If more people took this approach for how they treat others, I believe the world would be an even much more peaceful and harmonious place for us all in which to live. Whether you’re new to fitness, getting back on track, or an athlete looking to improve your performance, Red Effect offers instructor-led group training classes infused with infrared therapy. It’s basically traditional fitness meets innovative technology to maximize calorie burning results. “At Red Effect, we offer interval training, yoga, barre, and personal infrared saunas,” explains co-owner Brittany Wise. “It’s like having multiple fitness studios under one roof, all for one great value membership price.” Wise and her husband Jordan originally were members of a Red Effect gym in Ann Arbor, Michigan, when they fell in love with the concept and the community the gym fostered. When they relocated for work, they asked to switch their membership to the Red Effect location in Phoenix— but there were no locations of the national concept in the Grand Canyon state. With this information in hand, and a leap of faith, they relocated to North Phoenix and launched Red Effect at the Shops at Norterra.

“We absolutely believe in community fitness and love it when members can experience a wide variety of classes and infrared therapy to help them meet their wellness goals,” Wise says. GRATITUDE AND GROWTH While the Wise family had planned to open Red Effect Infrared Fitness in the spring of 2020, their opening was delayed to January 2021 due to COVID-19. Opening a fitness facility in the middle of the pandemic was stressful, but Wise shares that they believe in the concept and becoming business owners during such a turbulent time has provided them with plenty of opportunities for growth. “I feel like there is even more of a focus on fitness and wellness now more than ever before,” Wise says. “While we may have opened during a rough time in history, reception has been positive, and we are so grateful for each and every one of our members.” Wise adds that they chose to open a location in the Norterra area because they live here and felt a need to support their own community. With a professional background in industrial engineering combined with an MBA and leadership education, she shares that her previous career has helped prep her for the wild ride that is owning a small business. “I think us being engineers helps us to look at the bigger picture and set goals accordingly,” Wise shares. “We have a 5,000 square foot space, are open most hours from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., and offer an average of 60 classes a week. All of this on top of the fact that we have two young children and it all very much feels like controlled chaos. There’s plenty of room for growth, but of course, we are so grateful for our current members—we wouldn’t be here without them.” THE BENEFITS OF INFRARED THERAPY “According to studies and infrared experts, infrared saunas help to remove impurities from your cells, specifically cells inside where our fat is and where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals,” Wise explains. Solar Costs Rising for the First Time in a Decade! But There’s Still Time to Lock In Maximum Savings!

I
n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work. Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer. Technological innovation and scaled-up production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow. And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information
Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year. Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. s difficult as it has been to even buy a house in Phoenix over the past couple of years, the idea of flipping
houses might seem crazy right now. Since the initial COVID-19 quarantine ended, homes had been getting snapped up within days – if not hours – of hitting the market. Just finding a house to buy
has been difficult. And when bidding wars break out on a property targeted by home flippers, they are left watching their potential profit margins shrink faster than a cotton shirt in a dryer. You might think this would chase away the flippers. Think again. According to Realtor.com, Phoenix leads the country in home flipping. It’s our retirees who are driving this surge. As they transition from their current homes to downsized houses, single-story homes, and retirement communities, it creates a new supply of houses that tend to be older and in need of some updates – a home flipper’s dream-come-true. Couple this with the rising Arizona population, job growth, healthy local economy, and low interest rates, and we have the two things every home flipper needs: supply and demand. Like any other real estate trend, people naturally want to know how this affects them. If you’re looking to buy a house, this means an increase in competition. If you’re looking to sell a house, this

It’s Time to “Fall” for DVUSD Kindergarten

t’s hard to believe, but kindergarten registration for the 2022-2023 school year has begun! Luckily for local families, Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) offers a free full-day kindergarten program at all of their K-6 and K-8 schools.
“DVUSD kindergarten classrooms are filled with caring, kind-hearted, and genuine certified teachers,” says Mirage Elementary kindergarten teacher Stephanie Salcido. “Teachers respect every student and provide a safe and caring space, embracing each uniqueness and the strengths that we all have as individuals.” These teachers are not only nurturing, but they are also fully certified in early childhood education. “That includes reading, math, science, social studies and writing for young children. We know teaching is a constant work in progress. Parents can rest assured their kindergartner will receive the rigorous,

highest standards of teaching anywhere,” says Lisa Hoelzen, a kindergarten teacher at Copper Creek Elementary. “At the same time, we mindfully consider the developmental stage of each child. We create learning environments that are exciting, hands-on, and engaging.” In Deer Valley, 92% of K-6 and K-8 schools are rated an A or B by the Arizona Department of Education. Teachers have helped their schools achieve these high ratings by nurturing the whole child. Parents sending students off to kindergarten for the first time often wonder what a day will be like for their little ones. “A full six-and-a-half-hour day in the life of a kindergartner looks, sounds, and feels exciting, motivating, and engaging,” says Hoelzen. Salcido adds, “A day in kindergarten is filled with love, compassion, empathy, understanding, and curiosity.
There is a constant willingness to explore, overcome, and learn about the world around us.”

Instilling Gratitude in Kids By Nadine Bubeck
T
hanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s a universal time when many take an extra moment to count their blessings, because truth be told, we often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. I’m always looking for ways to instill positive vibes in my sons—values of kindness, and ways to express and acknowledge gratitude. Here are six ideas that families can implement to bring more “warm and fuzzy” into the house this fall. CREATE A KINDNESS CHART Every time your kids go above and beyond—unasked or prompted—place a sticker on the chart. (Examples can include helping with household tasks or being supportive of a sibling or friend.) For every ten acts of kindness, give them a small prize, and once they get 100, throw a pizza party (or a similar fun prize). The best part about this is it’s a joint effort among siblings, not a competition. It’s not him versus her chart—it’s a shared chart, so they’re working together to be awarded for good deeds.
RECITE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS It’s so important to teach your kids words of affirmation early on. Positive affirmations give a boost in confidence for young children, which helps them develop a positive selfimage. Words of affirmation are also a great way to help kids cope when they’re feeling down, upset, scared, or overwhelmed. You
can buy kid-targeted affirmation cards (I love Joyful Hearts Co., joyfulheartsco.com) or make your own (a fun DIY project!). Have your child choose a card every morning and during breakfast read it aloud—it’s a very empowering way to start the day. JOURNAL Journaling is a great way to teach your kids to express themselves and focus on the good in life. There are plenty of gratitude journals aimed for young kids with fill-in-the-blank prompts, making it a simple nightly task. In fact, my oldest and I have a mom-and-son journal that we take turns filling in and reading. It’s a very special activity that we do, and I plan on doing it with each of my boys when they’re ready. Journaling is a positive habit that gives kids a safe place to express their inner thoughts and emotions. HAND WRITE CARDS This is simple, sweet, and easy. Especially with all that’s going on in the world, have your kids write a hand-written card to someone they care about or even someone that they don’t know who does good (such as a police officer or fire fighter). Teach them that kind, unexpected words go a long way, and can make someone’s day. Consider it a good time to send “thank you” notes to teachers, law enforcement, and extended family.
COMPLIMENT Our Thanksgiving ritual is to go around the table and say what we’re thankful for, but this annual practice is nice
to incorporate more often. Designate a weekly night to pay each member of your family a compliment. This will teach your kids to accept compliments with grace and give them with sincerity. For parents, some complimentary ideas for our kids include: complimenting our child’s character, their contributions to the family, when they achieve something new, their sense of self, and steps toward a long-term goal.
REFLECT ON YOUR BLESSINGS To be the best for our children, we must strive for being our best selves—so this one is for you, mom, dad and other caregivers. This month, in addition to reflecting on what you’re thankful for, reflect on what your kids have and continue to teach you. Being a parent is tough and it’s not always easy to be positive and peppy. For example, my children have taught me a wealth of patience, true priorities, the art of affection, resilience, to connect with my inner child, and of course, unconditional love.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage
MOVIE REVIEWS No Time To Die
Titane A father reunites with his missing son after a series of murders grips the country. There’s no easy way to describe Titane without massively giving it away. A dark horror/comedy mixture, Titane is about desire, murder, deception, and how all of these don’t really mix. Which is ironic as, to me at least, they go together for a very skillfully crafted picture with nightmarish editing and visuals. It would be almost absurd if director Julia Ducournau didn’t just totally sell it, making you laugh but still cringe and be terrified. Watch at your own risk. Halloween Kills
which turn to anger, and spill out into disaster. Curtis is still great as always, but the supporting cast steals the show, all processing the situation in their own way. David Gordon Green shoots the film in a way that fits the hectic tone of the movie, getting nightmarish by the end, and it’s incredible. It’s a harsh movie that becomes tragic, entertaining but strangely still thoughtful.

After a betrayal causes him to go off the grid, James Bond returns for a final mission against a dangerous new enemy. No Time To Die not only is the end of the Craig era of Bond, but it also feels like the curtain call of the type of blockbuster filmmaking it was born into. Compared to other films of its type today, the classical filmmaking that director Cary Fukunaga brings is refreshing and exciting, with the pacing, energy and lush color palette giving something for every 007 fan. Craig is arguably at his most invested in the role, looking relaxed but still has the edge to a character who has been doing this for 15 years. Supporting characters, new and old, are almost all great and bounce off him well, aside from, unfortunately, the main villain Safin. A thin motivation combined with a miscast Rami Malek can really put the movie to a hard stop. Other than that, though, it’s a great final chapter for the actor.
Eddie Brock and Venom’s relationship is tested as an infamous serial killer breaks out of prison and bonds with a new symbiote. Venom was a terrible studio-mandated movie, barely stitchedtogether in the edit bay and tonally confused as to whether it wants to be a sci-fi action movie or a buddy comedy movie. Let There Be Carnage is confident, a sort of distorted romcom that doesn’t overstay its welcome and is intentionally funny. Hardy’s chemistry with himself (he plays Brock and voices Venom) is the heart of the film, giving the movie a much-needed core that was missing in the first film. I also appreciate how director Andy Serkis, despite a limited background in helming action, does up the ante on the action scenes, particularly the more CG-focused fights. Unfortunately, the film is holstered by a miscast Woody Harrelson, in a performance that comes off as more adorable than terrifying. Still, the film is an improvement in almost every way from the first Venom movie.
