Well, it’s always darkest before the dawn, as they say, and we’re happy to report a bright ray of hope peeking above the horizon.

If you’re ready to leave fossil fuels behind and embrace America’s future, then call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Congress Passes, President Signs New Act. Homeowners to Receive Additional Billions to Go SOLAR!

With our state’s abundant, year-round sunshine, we Arizonans stand ready to lead that revolution. And the professionals at SunSolar Solutions, Arizona’s largest, best-rated solar installer in 2021, are ready to help guide Arizonans every step of the way.

With this provision, the Inflation Reduction Act lives up to its name by enabling the expansion of both energy supply and demand. The government’s traditionally weak, wavering commitment to this key subsidy has long discouraged the kinds of large, long-term capital investments needed to generate growth in the nascent industry, leaving America straggling behind solar trailblazers like China and Germany. Researchers and manufacturers of clean-energy technology will see even more direct help from Uncle Sam in the form of tax credits, grants, and low-interest loans.

2 • September 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS myhyperlocalnews.com

The federal tax credit for rooftop solar systems, rather than continuing toward its imminent sunset, will last at least ten more years at its original 30-percent rate. That represents a huge expansion of the government’s commitment to distributed solar power, an indispensable means of escaping fossil-fuel dependence.

Some critics have derided the bill’s inflation-fighting measures, saying its industrial policies (and various other measures) don’t do enough—or don’t do it fast enough—to tame price increases. To be sure, inflation is a complex and controversial phenomenon, one with many causes and no simple solutions. Nonetheless, having endured wild increases in equipment prices since the pandemic, we can attest to the importance of foresight in avoiding calamitous supply shocks. Washington, just as it is only now belatedly pushing a large-scale reversal of the medical-supply industry’s decades-long wave of profit-driven offshorings, seems to have recognized only recently the importance of a domestic manufacturing sector for supplying the country’s energy revolution.

We’ll admit it: events outside our control have had us worried for a while about the future of solar power—in Arizona and throughout the country. With swelling panel prices, the Fed’s rate increases, and the ongoing, seemingly inevitable shriveling of government support for the green-energy transition, an ominous gloom appeared to be settling over our industry, foreshadowing a long night.

Don’t let the name fool you: the Inflation Reduction Act, more than just another attempt at alleviating price pressures, constitutes Uncle Sam’s largest and most ambitious investment in the nation’s energy future. A combined $369 billion dollars’ worth of tax cuts, grants, and low-cost loans will fund a thorough reorientation of America’s economy around clean, renewable energy, hopefully enabling us to leave planet-heating fossil fuels where they belong: in the past and in the ground.

The law also extends and expands support for other household energy infrastructure, such as energy-efficient appliances and heat pumps.

With last month’s abrupt, unexpected breakthrough in negotiations between Senate leadership and fickle holdout Joe Manchin, the future of clean energy suddenly started looking a lot brighter—as did our outlook.

In July 2019, North Phoenix resident Kathy Angerami was looking for a way to turn back the hands of time on her skin without having to resort to surgery or an invasive procedure. With years of experience in the spa and salon industries, she discovered the Plasma Pen— an advanced, non-invasive skin lifting and tightening procedure that was already well established and very popular in Europe for years and had just been approved for use in the U.S. After experiencing the Plasma Pen’s impressive results for herself, she wanted to share her passion for the procedure with others and launched Pleasantly Plasma in September 2019. Now, celebrating three years in business, Kathy continues to help others experience the rejuvenating, impressive results of the Plasma Pen.

Kathy adds that she utilizes the Louise Walsh Plasma Pen, which is the innovative, original device from Germany. She provides spot treatments along with full face spray and peels. One session is equivalent to 4-6 micro needling sessions and there are phenomenal results with skin resurfacing, age spots, sunspots, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and more. Impressive Results “I’m passionate about the Plasma Pen because it works,” Kathy says. “I’ve seen results on myself along with hundreds of clients. I’m so grateful to o er this service to help men and women look and feel better about themselves.”

“As we age, the dermal layer of your skin thins and less collagen is produced, which causes our skin to wrinkle and sag,” Kathy explains. “The Plasma Pen’s fibroblasting is designed to dramatically repair, reverse, and mitigate these signs of aging—incorporating micro-trauma while stimulating new cell turnover for more youthful, tighter skin. It does this while being a non-invasive procedure and requiring very little downtime. And the best part? Results can last for years.”

The Plasma Pen is a one-of-a-kind cosmetic procedure to combat wrinkles, fine lines, the loss of collagen, and sagging skin. This is done through a non-surgical procedure that is ideal for wrinkle removal, eyelid tightening, and eye-lid repair, and more. The Plasma Pen can treat, repair, lift and rejuvenate many areas of the skin by converting electrical energy into an oxygen-and-nitrogen plasma stream called fibroblasting. This creates immediate firming and a long-term tightening e ect as collagen production then ramps up.

Food allergies/sensitivities can often cause inflammation. Common foods that contribute are dairy products, eggs, gluten, and soy. A naturopathic physician can help you decide if food allergy elimination will be helpful for you.

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to events such as illness, trauma, physical stress, and chronic disease. Acute inflammation is a short-term healing process that warns our body of an injury. For example, if you break a bone, the body reacts quickly with redness, swelling, pain, and heat. This warns us to be more cautious of the injured area, preventing any further Chronicdamage.

STRESS REDUCTION Stress can be just as aggravating to the immune system as the foods we eat. Physical activity, yoga, nature, and plenty of sleep may be helpful ways to reduce stress, thus decreasing inflammation.

inflammation is a low level of inflammation that is not visible. It is a result of prolonged acute inflammation, repetitive injuries, or even external factors such as chemicals, medications, nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, and metabolic diseases. If not addressed, this chronic inflammation can aggravate and/or lead to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, and diabetes. Diet and lifestyle play an important role in chronic inflammation. It is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways, to decrease your overall inflammation, protect your immune system, and make you a healthier you. Here’s what to do.

Hello Neighb !

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Yikes. If anyone ever wanted to clear a room, put me up to sing karaoke.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Mom life! My primary role is taking care of my children. When they’re in school or occupied with other activities, I am working at Elite Fine Jewelers as a jewelry design specialist. I meet new clients and learn about their fine jewelry needs, which is every girl’s dream come true! I get to play with engagement rings, luxury watches, diamond earrings, tennis bracelets, and more. Not only do I help design jewelry and sort diamonds, but I am creating memories for individuals and couples and get to be a part of so many love stories. Evenings are a special time at home when I get to relax and unwind from the day with my husband and kids.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… This is tough. I love Wizard of Oz, as I watched it on replay during my childhood and love the message behind it that all you need is to believe in yourself, and you can do anything. I also love Iron Man; it just makes me smile and I love Tony Stark’s humor throughout it. With two boys at home, I’ve watched my fair share of Iron Man, and I’m still not tired of it. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a jeweler. As a child I loved going to work with my dad. I was intrigued by diamonds and gemstones. I loved watching him repair jewelry and appraise diamonds. I always knew I wanted to work with diamonds, precious, and semiprecious gemstones. Fun fact: My siblings and I are third-generation jewelers!

MY FAMILY IS… everything! My husband is a pharmacist. We have two boys and two dogs. I work with my extended family at the shop. It never gets old.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… with as much time as I spend around my kids and other children, there are countless stories of innocent questions that keep me giggling on the daily. There’s no shortage of silly faces—too many to count!

HI, MY NAME IS… Ashley Isaacson I’VE LIVED IN NORTH PHOENIX FOR FOUR YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… my kids get to experience this amazing community surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. It has been a dream to raise my family in a true community. We are close to their school and so many family-friendly activities, and always surrounded by other kids. I moved to Arizona 18 years ago from Chicago to attend ASU (Go Devils!) and I’m fortunate that my brother, sister, and parents followed me out to Phoenix. My parents, siblings, and I work together every day now! We started in the wholesale diamond and fine jewelry business right out of college and six years ago we decided to open our showroom to the public, Elite Fine Jewelers. We are considered Arizona’s finest hidden gem.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my father, as he is living proof that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. He’s also one of the most kind-hearted and funniest people you will ever meet.

THE PERFECT DAY… is quiet and slow with lots of laughter, and just taking time to have conversation over a cup of coffee and being together. Oh, and a great beer in hand while watching the sunset!

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my children. They are the most amazing gift and so much more than anything I could have asked for. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… this is going to sound cliché, but as a busy mom a dream vacation would be a mix of family time and alone time to recharge. We are always on the go, so any vacation sounds great. We love Rocky Point, Mexico.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS…My family. My family is my life, but you probably could have guessed that!

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED… your thoughts become your reality. Our minds are so powerful, all we need to do is listen.

The last two years have really showed me what is important in life–nothing should be taken for granted. We only get one shot at this, right?

Real Estate

Home Improvement...Yea or Nay?

PROJECTS FOR SHORT-TERM STAYS If you only intend to stay in your house for a couple of years, you might not want to sink a bunch of money into your home. Here’s why: A $100,000 swimming pool may only bump up your home price by $20,000-$30,000. Great family fun but a not-so-great ROI. Instead, consider doing cosmetic upgrades to the décor such as interior paint, cabinet hardware, curtain rods, and toilet seats. These DIY projects don’t require a contractor and the price point is relatively low. You’ll end up with a quick refresh you can enjoy while you’re still living there.

By Shelley Sakala, Realtor In this month’s real estate column, local realtor Shelley Sakala addresses the topic of upgrades in response to a reader’s question. “Now that the market has cooled off a little, I’m rethinking my home improvement plans. Should I hold off? Should I go for it?” asks Marcus, a Phoenix homeowner.

PROJECTS FOR LONG-TERM STAYS

PROJECTS FOR MEDIUM-TERM STAYS Medium-term projects include switching out the light fixtures, replacing the carpeting, or installing new ceiling fans. You may need to hire a handyman and shell out a few more bucks for the projects, but you’ll be in the house long enough to enjoy the upgrades before you move. Installing new faucets, for example, will set you back a few hundred dollars each, but will instantly modernize a tired-looking kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room.

THE EXPERT’S ANSWER Today’s homeowners are more informed than ever, with access to online resources for calculating and forecasting home values. They’re factoring in return-oninvestment, neighborhood comps, and curb appeal when deciding whether to do home upgrades. With this in mind, I always ask one key question when homeowners ask my advice on home improvement: How long do you plan to stay in that house? Knowing the answer can guide you when planning upgrades to your home. I like to divide improvement projects into three categories based on how long you’ll be there.

1. Short-term Stay (1-2 years) 2. Medium-term Stay (3-5 years) 3. Long-term Stay (5+ years)

You’ve decided to stay awhile. Maybe it’s your “forever” house. This is where you go for it with home improvement projects because you’re not worried about profit margin or ROI. This could mean new flooring, windows, countertops, or even a swimming pool. You’re about to cross over from “redecorating” to “remodeling,” which requires a contractor (and a few more zeroes on the price tag), but you’ll love the results for years to come. Whatever you choose to do and however much you choose to spend, remember that any on-trend enhancements will make your home more appealing to a buyer (if and when you decide to sell). You might not see a dollar-for-dollar return on your investment, but a more desirable home usually sells faster. That’s something you’ll appreciate down the road.

New Possibilities NEW SCHOOL YEAR,

16 • September 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS myhyperlocalnews.com

By Shay Moser More than 32,000 youth returned to Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) classrooms for the new school year—a year highlighted with a new elementary school, a new full continuum gifted program, and a new “home” campus for online students.

“I’m very community oriented. And so, we involved our community in every process of developing those initial components,” says Schwarting, who has served the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2005. Inspiration Mountain became the newest DVUSD school name through community meetings and surveys. The community chose black and blue out of five color choices and got behind the Knights for the mascot.

INSPIRATION MOUNTAIN SCHOOL WELCOMES STUDENTS

To get the details on these new offerings, we asked these DVUSD school leaders.

Cover Story

Students in kindergarten to sixth grade entered the doors for the first time at Inspiration Mountain School at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway, near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road. Between the groundbreaking in September 2021 and the first day of school in August, district officials hired a principal, Dr. JoAnn Schwarting, who coordinated the selection process to determine the school’s name, colors, and mascot.

Nearly a year ago, dignitaries helped break ground for DVUSD’s Inspiration Mountain School in Stetson Valley, which opened its doors on Aug. 3 with the district. Las Brisas Elementary began a robust continuum of schoolwide gifted services for all students. In addition, Deer Valley’s Online Learning Academy, Aspire, opened a collaborative community space to offer the next generation of extraordinary experiences to all DVUSD stakeholders.

DVUSD’s New School, Gifted Program, and Online Campus

teachers instruct Aspire’s 150 courses under Amara’s leadership. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade participate in virtual, real-time, teacher-led instruction. Seventh and eighth graders learn through a hybrid of teacher-led education and prepared resources, and ninth through 12th grade students learn through crafted resources, with open lab access to teachers during virtual and in-person office hours.

The gifted academy starts with Las Brisas Bright Beginnings Programs, servicing gifted identified students in grades preschool through second grade, giving the youngest students a solid and enriching beginning for their learning journey. Students are reassessed at the end of second grade to see what gifted programming they qualify for in third grade and above.

While back-to-school time has most DVUSD students heading to the bus stop, others are walking to the dining room table to attend Aspire, Deer Valley’s fully accredited online academy for kindergarten to 12thgrade Launchedstudents.atthe beginning of the 2021-22 school year, the online school for kindergarten through 12th grade is continuing as an educational option for parents and students in the North Valley.

“We’re opening up our profile of courses to ensure students have the opportunity for a wide breadth of educational experiences,” Amara says. “We want to help them engage in rigorous work and meet their personal Certifineeds.”ed

“Aspire is fortunate to have wonderful, experienced online teachers, and they are experts on all learning management systems,” says Amara. “They’ve helped craft online learning and how to teach online to meet students where they are.”

In addition to its traditional course offerings, the academy offers music, art, and physical education and technology at the elementary level and a variety of electives and exploratory classes to middle schoolers.

Qualifying third through sixth-grade students attend the district’s new Renaissance Highly Gifted and Global Studies Program. This self-contained program offers an immersive project and problem-based environment focusing on global cultures and languages. Las Brisas Gifted Academy is the only school in the Deer Valley Unified School District that provides the full continuum of services for gifted and talented students. And a range of services exists for all students, including math acceleration, pull-out enrichment, and gifted homeroom placement. All students also have access to STEAM, PE, music, and art through their special-areas rotation.

daily. The gifted instructional strategies focus on choice and exploration and are highly differentiated based upon readiness, content, and learning outcome.

To meet students where they are offline, DVUSD created the Innovation Center, which also opened this fall. “With the pandemic, our online program grew exponentially, and the need for a dedicated space became extremely important,” Amara explains. The Annex, a warehouse built in 1982 to hold district supplies and resources for DVUSD schools, was reimagined and remodeled, thanks to community support.

The 2022-23 school year highlights wouldn’t be complete without recapping Forbes naming Deer Valley Unified School District one of America’s Best Midsize Employers in February. Previously, Forbes recognized DVUSD as one of the best places to work in Arizona for two years, which means it’s the highest ranked pre-kindergarten through 12th grade district in the country to receive this distinction. This content sponsored by DVUSD.

Inspiration Mountain students and parents will be able to show their enthusiasm at the school’s monthly community spirit assemblies, where they’ll honor professions that serve the community.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of giants, and you learn from each school you build. We’re fortunate at Inspiration Mountain to have outdoor learning spaces,” says Schwarting, who has also taught seventh-grade English language arts at Desert Mountain School and served as an assistant principal and instructional coach of Desert Sky Middle School throughout her time with the district.

DVUSD has offered high school students online support since 2007. “Our younger students are now reaping the benefits,” says Juliet Amara, DVUSD’s director for online and virtual learning. “Many of our learners from last year stayed with us for this year because they see the need and value of it.”

THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR ON FORBES’ LIST

Aspire has grown to offer full- and part-time high school students advanced placement courses, dualenrollment, career and technical education internships, clubs, and eSports. It even provides guitar online.

“Many planned communities like to name their school after the topographical area, streets, mountains. The school is on Inspiration Mountain Parkway Loop, so that was a given,” explains Schwarting, who spent the past six years leading Desert Mountain School as Alongprincipal.with a new name, colors, and mascot, the 14-acre, 72,742 square-foot new school offers unique features, including an upgraded media center and makerspaces to allow for the STEAM curriculum focus (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). In addition, shade structures, baseball and soccer fields, bus routing, and parking add to the outdoor area.

Inspiration Mountain’s media center is “a beautiful, wide-open space,” Schwarting says, from classes for students to professional development for teachers and shelves of new books. Four shade sails extend learning spaces outdoors. “We’re nestled in this little valley amidst these beautiful foothills. So, the view is gorgeous from Whilecampus.”Inspiration Mountain currently serves kindergarten through sixth grade students, it has plans to expand to a kindergarten through eighthgrade campus. “The journey is just beginning,” says Schwarting. “We welcomed students a couple of weeks ago, and the energy—everybody is so excited.”

4. When your child misbehaves, respond by saying that they “made a bad choice.” This gives them the power to make the right choice next time. Avoid making statements like, “You always misbehave,” because it can negatively define the core of your child’s identity.

Since 2009, Epic Kids has been proudly highlighting the achievements of local kids!

9. Maintain a positive home environment. If you and your spouse are constantly arguing, your child may not feel they don’t have control over their environment. This can cause them to feel helpless and recluse.

11. Be a ectionate with your child. Give hugs and frequently say, “I love you.” If your child knows your love is constant, your child will have the courage to try new things without fear of failure. in Kids Ways to Instill

10. Volunteer with your child. When your child helps another person, it contributes to their own sense of self-worth. There are many ways to instill in your kids a passion to pay it forward.

1. Recognize your child’s small and large successes. Children develop self-esteem gradually. Telling your child they are smart is nice but pointing out something specific gives them proof to internalize this belief.

7. Show encouragement in many areas of your child’s life. If you only focus on grades, your child may believe they are only as good as their grades.

As many get in the groove of back to school, now is an opportune time to prioritize feeding our kids with positive reinforcement. However, I’m no expert. I’m just a mom doing the best I can. So, after much Googling, I came up with a list of 11 easy ways parents can help their kids establish and maintain self-confidence.

Self Confidence

a scary feeling sending our kids off to school knowing mommy isn’t around to protect them from falling or getting their feelings hurt.

A recent eye-opening study of 14,000 children in the United States found that as many as 40% of children don’t develop strong emotional bonds (what psychologists refer to as ‘secure attachment’) with their parents. Attachment refers to the impact that children’s early parental care has on their social and emotional development.

It’sforever?surely

Problem is: how do we protect our children from the inevitable? How do we teach them to ignore and avoid bullies— to rise above the cruelty among us? How can we instill in our children to love themselves and radiate the self-esteem and self-worth we hope they will carry

Kids’ Corner

3. When your child fails, emphasize the persistence they exhibited, not the outcome. For example, if your child doesn’t make a sports team, tell them you’re proud of the effort put into trying. Learning to apply effort and be persistent are skills that can be applied to all areas of life.

8. Respect your child’s cry. In other words, honor your child’s feelings and emotions. Instead of saying, “You’re 7 and too old to cry,” realize that shedding tears is a form of self-expression and it’s our body’s natural way to release upset feelings. In fact, crying lets the body rid itself of variants of the chemical cortisol, which is produced in times of stress

5. Recognize when your child makes negative statements about themselves. If your child struggles with math and makes a generalized statement such as, “I can’t do math,” respond along the lines of, “You do well in school when you work hard. Math is a subject that you may need to spend more time on.”

NORTH PHOENIX NEWS • September 2022 • 21myhyperlocalnews.com

6. Resist comparing one child to another in the family. Asking, “Why can’t you be more like your brother” will eventually lead to a lowered sense of selfworth. Emphasize what makes your child unique.

2. Give praise when deserved, without overdoing it. Empty praise or a ribbon for no effort is not meaningful. A true sense of self-worth comes from trying, failing, trying again, and succeeding.

“Vengeance” A journalist travels to a small Texas town to make a podcast around the death of a woman he hooked up with. Have you ever watched a movie and can tell that the writer spends too much time on Twitter? “Vengeance” is one of those movies, as BJ Novak seems to think he’s made something very insightful on the political divide between uppermiddle class Liberals and middle-class Republicans, when all he’s done is come off as someone who’s never met anyone from the latter group. Caricatures roam the story instead of characters (though Boyd Holbrook is trying), in a story that doesn’t seem to know what it’s even about. Is it about the assumptions we make about each other, or the justifications ones will make to deny the truth? I’m not even sure if Novak knows, and it’s hard to laugh at anything going on here or feel like anyone is in danger. By the end, none of it really amounts to anything, as if he himself has given up on the story by that point. You’ll have given up much earlier. “Day Shift” A vampire hunter finds himself in the crosshairs of a new danger as he struggles to secure money for his family. “Day Shift” almost realizes its potential, if only it could help itself. JJ Perry takes his stuntman past and uses those skills to direct some great action, with some of the most intriguing camerawork of the year and a nice mixture of practical and digital effects. Unfortunately, the script has an obsession with quipping and a selfawareness that is akin to the “Deadpool” movies, as if it needs to acknowledge the strangeness of the story. Sometimes, it’s enough to let the story of a vampire union play out without winking to the audience every five minutes. Still, the actors deliver and sell it well, with Snoop Dogg making the biggest impact—despite his lack of screen time as an old-timer cowboy character. In terms of action movies, Netflix has made worse with more money, and it’s worth a viewing for what it still pulls off.

By Tony Beal OUT NOW “Prey” A Comanche woman finds herself in new territory when she and her tribe are hunted by an alien with advanced weaponry.

“Bullet Train” A group of assassins on a Japanese train find themselves connected in a way that puts them all at risk. Sometimes you watch a movie and can tell from the first few minutes that it won’t be for you, and yet it can still surprise you with how bad it is. “Bullet Train” is that kind of film that goes through the motions of having a big cast (including cameos), a funky tone and soundtrack, and enough humor and quirks to keep the audience’s interest. What it doesn’t do is make any of those characters likable (wasting a hugely talented cast), provide humor that’s actually funny or give you a reason to care about anything that’s going on. It can’t even deliver on the action, with choppy and ugly fight scenes that have little variety and no thought in the visuals beyond “flashy neon.” It’s a movie where you can tell everyone was only there because they were bored from COVID quarantine and wanted some quick bucks, and no one had any real passion. It’s an infuriating and obnoxious movie, a compilation of the worst aspects of modern action movies.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“Predator” is a series that has always redefined itself with each installment, and “Prey” continues the trend with excellent results. Scaling down the action genre to its barest bones, director Dan Trachtenberg brings a vicious and exciting ride that doesn’t let up, while also introducing new and unique set pieces and ideas. Even then, it still lets the characters guide it, as Amber Midthunder and Dakota Beavers (the latter of whom is in his first role) are natural born action stars who shine as a sister-brother duo. Most of all, it brings back the fear that this series has been missing for a while with a brutal new creature. It’s a nice reminder that any series can come back with the right idea.
