Arizona Restaurant Week Returns September 17 – 26
Affordable | Fast | Easy
THE ARIZONA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION CONTINUES ITS FOURTEENTH YEAR OF CULINARY DISCOVERY WITH ITS 2021 FALL ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEK (ARW) DINE IN OR TAKE OUT, TAKING PLACE AT RESTAURANTS AROUND THE STATE FROM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 THROUGH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26. For this 10-day dining extravaganza, participating restaurants are offering even more opportunity this year with an additional price option. Now threecourse prix fixe menus have three price alternatives for $33, $44 or $55 per person. The added $55 price point gives restaurants greater range to provide their guests with an even more elevated dining experience and accounts for rising prices across the industry. These dedicated ARW menus highlight the culinary talents of chefs around the state while giving dining enthusiasts a great deal. In addition to the three-course prix fixe menu, many restaurants offer wine pairing selections to enhance each course for an additional cost.

We appreciate the support of diners that continue to dine in or take out not only because they enjoy it but because they want to be part of rebuilding our vibrant culinary community. The new price option this year will allow restaurants to raise the bar on their offerings for guests.”
also spare no expense to give diners an extraordinary culinary experience. Phoenix’s Response to Drought and How It Impacts the City Information Courtesy of Phoenix Water RECENTLY, THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF RECLAMATION DECLARED THE FIRST-EVER TIER 1 SHORTAGE ON THE COLORADO RIVER, BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2022. This shortage is an outcome of persistent declines in Colorado River flows as a result of longterm drought conditions, over allocation of available river resources, and climate change.
as the fifth largest city in the United States. “The Bureau of Reclamation’s Tier 1 Shortage declaration does not come as
a surprise, as it is reflective of serious drought conditions across the Western United States. The City of Phoenix has been working for the last several decades to diversify water resources,
store water for future use, and invest in infrastructure to enhance the city’s resilience to drought,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix has a strong legacy of conservation and wise water use to build upon. It is crucial that we continue to develop these strategies and bolster our city’s response to the effects of a warming climate.” Phoenix Water will continue to provide safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers without interruptions. However, it is essential that residents and business owners do their part to be water smart and embrace a desert lifestyle by using water wisely.
Phoenix is built for drought. The city has developed a robust water resource portfolio over many decades and will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River in the years to come. Living in a desert city isn’t always easy, but because of thoughtful and intricate planning, Phoenix will continue to thrive
Residents can read the city’s water resource plan, drought action plan, and tips on how to wisely use water at Phoenix.gov/Drought.

Education DVUSD Offers Quality Online School Option for Local Students of All Ages
D
eer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) now offers online courses for K-12 students that seek a robust online school option.
As of press time (mid-August), the school, called Aspire, had 542 full-time students and 364 part-time students. “Nine hundred and twenty eight is pretty good for the first year of a new school,” says Monica Allread, a district spokeswoman. DVUSD had a robust online program for high school previously. Now, with Aspire, students have Advanced Placement offerings and the school is working to expand their offerings to dual enrollment options, CTE internships, e-sports, honor societies, and more in the near future.
“With this past school year’s parent interest in online schooling for their child, DVUSD determined there continues to be a need to provide an online option for parents,” Allread says. “DVUSD believes in providing this choice for parents who want an online education.” WHAT MAKES DVUSD DIFFERENT THAN OTHER ONLINE OPTIONS? Students enrolled in Aspire in K-6 will engage in synchronous (real-time, teacher-led) instruction. This gives younger students the structure needed to be successful. Middle grade students will have a hybrid of asynchronous (prepared resources) and synchronous instruction and 9-12 grade students will be an asynchronous campus with open lab access to teachers with both virtual and in-person office hours. “Aspire teachers are highly qualified and properly certified educators, which sets us apart from some other online schools,” cites the district. DVUSD students can still participate extracurricular activities at their home boundary school. Music, art and PE, and technology are offered at elementary.
The Industry Leader in
Electives/exploratory classes offered are at middle school. For full-time K-12 Aspire students, there is no fee. Families electing to enroll in Aspire, Deer Valley’s K-12 Online Academy, need to complete the open enrollment process and follow the same procedures aligned to the brick and mortar campuses, detailed at openenrollment.dvusd.org/application.

Community Local Residents Invited to Unique Opportunity to Help Military Families By Lin Sue Cooney Photo Courtesy of Hospice of the Valley
O
ne of the most fulfilling things we can do in life is serve others. Ideally, the happiness we derive is all the thanks we need. But an amazing program called Legacy Corps is making it even more rewarding to help others. Based at Arizona State University, this national AmeriCorps program matches people in communities across the country with veterans and military families who need support. Hospice of the Valley is thrilled to be the first Arizona partner and receive a grant to fund the program for the next three years. Of the 20,000 patients we serve annually, about 1,400 are veterans, who often find themselves physically and emotionally overwhelmed. Many need assistance with
transportation, grocery shopping or light housekeeping. Now we can help lighten the stress. “Hospice of the Valley is excited to implement this grant from Legacy Corps and touch more families in our veteran community,” says Volunteer Services Director Stacia Ortega. Volunteers who join the program are called Legacy Corps members and receive special training in caregiver support. Their participation is invaluable to military families who need socialization, companionship and in-home respite care to ensure their loved ones are not alone while a caregiver takes a much-needed break. In addition to training, Legacy Corps offers incentives like a monthly allowance and a college tuition award after a year of service.
Those who are 55 or older can pass this award to a child or grandchild. Legacy Corps’ national project director, Jack Steele, says the grant enables Hospice of the Valley to recruit and train 24 volunteers this year. Among the current applicants are a 19-year-old woman who has volunteered with various nonprofits since age 15 and a 43-year-old speech therapist who wants to help veterans living with dementia. “They both express a vital quality: a passion for national service and excitement about making a difference in their communities,” says Eileen Dullum, Legacy Corps program coordinator for Hospice of the Valley. David Swindell, director of ASU’s Center for Urban Innovation, which oversees the Legacy Corps grant, sees the program evolving. “Next year, we hope to offer our
first course for volunteers to learn about and deliver respite care while earning course credit at ASU.” To learn more about Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families, visit hov. org/volunteer/Legacy-Corps. Lin Sue Cooney is director of Community Engagement at Hospice of the Valley.
Anthem Resident to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award for Decades of Volunteer Service By Lauren Subia
N
o acts of service go unnoticed and without touching the lives of others. Anthem resident Lisa S. Jackson, the president of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, Southwest Chapter, is living proof of this as she is being honored by the foundation with a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions and volunteer work. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is, “A nonprofit, volunteer-fueled organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases,” according to the organization. The foundation serves more than 1.2 million patients nationwide on an annual basis by providing programs to educate healthcare professionals on the diseases; offering advocacy programs
to support patients; and investing more than $400 million into finding the causes, treatments, and cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Jackson has volunteered with the Southwest chapter of the nonprofit, which serves both Arizona and New Mexico, for 17 years. Fifteen of those years of service have been as an active board member and approximately six years as board chair. “I became involved when my son Adam was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age nine,” Jackson explains. “His pediatric gastroenterologist put us in contact with the foundation. They provided us with the opportunity to have Adam go to camp with a program called Camp Oasis at no cost to our family. Camp Oasis is a program that sends kids to camp for a week with children like them suffering with Crohn’s and colitis. They can freely talk about the emotional and physical effects of these diseases with their peers. Adam found this to be a life changing experience, as did we. I could not imagine not giving back in some way.” Since then, Jackson and her family have participated in 16 walks, three leadership conferences, and dozens of charitable and educational events. Jackson will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Night of Champions Gala on November 18 at the Clayton House in Scottsdale. “The gala celebrates the strength of the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) community and honors those who make a difference in the estimated 91,000 lives of those living with IBD

in the Arizona and New Mexico area; all while raising the critical funds needed to accomplish the foundation’s mission,” according to the nonprofit. “I am incredibly honored to be recognized at this event,” Jackson says. “Those who know me understand how passionate I am toward supporting the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.” To learn more about the foundation and its upcoming fundraising event, visit crohnscolitisfoundation.org/chapters/southwest. myhyperlocalnews.com

omen from across Arizona who are currently making an impact in their communities in a meaningful way are being sought as nominees for Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women.
“Congratulations, Senior Awardees”
Now 11 years old, 48 Arizona Women, the sponsoring Valley-based organization, started as an official Arizona Centennial Project in 2010 to recognize the state’s most remarkable women having a positive impact in their communities, often with little fanfare. The organization’s mission is to, “Transform lives, build stronger communities and help positively shape Arizona and the nation.” Partnering with the Arizona Historical Society, 48 Arizona Women honors professional and non-professional women from diverse backgrounds whose leadership and commitment are contributing in a positive way to the future of Arizona. “The first group of 48 honorees were selected in 2012 and included U.S. Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O’Connor, Cindy McCain, and Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee,” says Connie Robinson, chair of the 48 Arizona Women Steering Committee. “But they also included a former governor, educators, a bull fighter who became a CEO, an advocate for the treatment and cure of Niemann Pick Type C disease, a former mezzo-soprano with the Metropolitan Opera, a pastor who ministers to incarcerated women, a mayor who transformed a city, an ambassador who became Secretary of the Air Force and many dedicated philanthropists, volunteers, doctors, artists and entertainers in leadership positions throughout the state.” Open nominations are currently being accepted through September 30 and local residents are encouraged to nominate anyone they feel is worthy— from a next door neighbor to an elected official. Nominations can be completed online at 48women. org. Paper nomination forms are available by calling 602-896-9000 or can be downloaded from the website. “This program was created to raise awareness for the amazing work women are doing to improve and enhance the lives of Arizonans,” Robinson says. “While some nominees will be well-known, others will be working diligently but less publicly in their cities and towns.” A committee comprised of a diverse group of community leaders, public and private sector leaders, and residents will evaluate nominees on myhyperlocalnews.com

several key factors: the impact that their leadership, accomplishments and dedication have had on the state and the nation; their influence as role models and visionaries; and their ability to relate to a wide range of people. Honorees will be announced in early 2022 and featured in a 140-plus page coffee table book titled Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women—A New Decade, telling each woman’s story in words and photos. All honorees will be formally recognized in spring 2022 during a 48 Women Luncheon as well as a VIP reception for the launch of the book. The book will be available for purchase throughout Arizona in mid2022. “Our goal for the book is to incorporate it into the Arizona school curriculum as well as make it available in libraries around the state,” Robinson says. “Children need everyday role models who are bringing meaningful change to their lives and the communities in which they live. We also want to create awareness among Arizonans of the richness and uniqueness of the state’s history and the dedicated people who have contributed to it.”

Kids’ Corner CREATIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE GRANDPARENTS AND IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE By Jenna-Lee Neff id you know that grandparents have their very own day? Typically the first Sunday after Labor Day, National Grandparents Day honors the special bond created between grandparents and their grandchildren, and encourages families to celebrate the love between the generations. This year, the special day is Sunday, September 12. Grandparents Day began when Marian McQuade envisioned a holiday that would encourage children to visit their grandparents and other aging adults. Around the age of 40, McQuade began organizing an annual “Past 80” party in Richwood, West Virginia, and she spent much of her free time visiting residents of nursing homes, organizing exercise groups and craft classes for the elderly, and helping residents record their precious family recipes so they wouldn’t be lost to time. McQuade took her vision of the grandparent holiday and introduced it to politicians near and far. Eventually it was made official national holiday in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. Whether your grandparents are near or far, we’ve put together tips on how you can make priceless memories this Grandparents Day. Here are five ways to spend the day with the grandparents in your life: • Have a sleepover: Many grandparents want to spend more time with their grandkids, so pack up the family and stay the night if grandma and grandpa are up for it.
• Ask them to show you their hobby: Chances are your grandparent has an interest vastly different from your own; show them you want to know more by asking them to share their hobby and help you learn. • Create crafty memories: Work on a project together. You could work on a special painting, make a wellloved recipe, or tie-dye T-shirts together. • Go on an adventure: Ask your grandparent to share some of their favorite places with you and make arrangements for a day and a time to go see them. • Take some of the household work off their plate: Whether it’s cleaning up an overgrown garden, taking out the trash, or taking care of their next grocery trip for them, you can show your love by taking something off their to-do list. Maybe the grandparents in your life live out of town or out of state. Or maybe they continue to social distance in the wake of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Whatever the case may be, here are five ways to celebrate the day without being face-to-face: • Pick up the phone or the iPad: Surprise grandparents with a much-needed phone call or a virtual visit on FaceTime or Zoom. • Write a letter: Let grandma and grandpa know you are thinking about them with a hand-written note. • Ask them to share a story: Next time you connect, ask grandparents to share stories from their childhood. • Send them something sweet: Whether it’s flowers for grandma or grandpa’s favorite candies, a small gift let’s them know you’re thinking of them.
• Make a photo book: Don’t let distance cut them out. Making a photo book is a great way to share memories in a format they can enjoy over and over again.
If your grandparents have passed, here are three ways you can still honor them for Grandparents Day: • Share a fond memory of them with friends or family. • Take a break from the day and go do something you used to do together. • Keep their memory alive by writing down stories about your grandparents for future generations. If you don’t have grandparents in your life, you can still make this day special for an aging adult. There are many seniors who have no grandchildren, and some who have no immediate family at all. ‘Adopt’ a senior in your community and get to know them. They have plenty of love and wisdom to share. Many cities and nonprofits have official Adopt A Senior programs, too. We all know how important it is for kids to make memories with the older generation. The sharing of traditions, history and strengthening a supportive familial bond can influence children throughout their lives. The tips on this list can help make a positive impact in the life of an aging adult, and set the groundwork for an annual family celebration for years to come. No One Does It Like a Neighborhood Expert Realtor Shelley Sakala shares the secrets to her success I
f you’ve lived in the area awhile, chances are you’ve seen, heard, or even run into Shelley Sakala. Shelley has lived in the neighborhood for the past 14 years and has made it a point to consistently market herself and The Sakala Group real estate team in the local community. She is a regular contributor to this publication (check out her real estate report on page 21). The other components of her marketing strategy are equally strong, including direct mail, community event sponsorship, Adopt-a-Street, and an in-store presence
at CVS pharmacy. If you think she’s “everywhere,” you’d be correct. And that’s by design. Before Shelley became a licensed Realtor, she worked as a certified meteorologist for ABC 15. Sure, she can talk about the weather with expertise. But the biggest lesson she learned while working in television was the importance of marketing. TV news is competitive here, with the top five news stations all reporting the same stories while fighting for eyeballs. The only

real differences between stations are the personalities and the marketing. When you hear positioning statements like “Most Trusted News Station” or “Most Accurate Weather,” those are catchy phrases designed to shape how the audience feels about a news station. It’s the magic of marketing! Shelley takes the marketing lessons learned from her time on the news team and applies them to her real estate business. “It’s all about standing out from the competition. There are so many real estate agents out there fighting for listings,”
she explains. “It’s as competitive as any industry around. If you don’t find ways to actively and consistently market yourself - and your listings - you get lost in the shuffle.” Lest you think Shelley is all marketing and no substance, her track record speaks otherwise. She is the #5 ranked Realtor in her company (out of 2,400 total agents). “Yes, it’s important to market yourself and generate leads,” Shelley says. “But if you don’t have the chops to get the deals done, your time in real estate will be short lived. You’ve got to hold your own when myhyperlocalnews.com
it comes to customer service, promoting your listings, staging homes, advising your clients, and negotiating…not to mention managing contract details that can potentially derail a sale.”
‘‘
As any Realtor will attest, it doesn’t matter how slick your marketing game is if you forget to dot your i’s and cross your t’s.
Early on, I made the decision to focus my energy on the local community and become a neighborhood expert.
businesses coming to town. “Here’s why that matters: tell prospective buyers at an open house that a new Dutch Bros is being built nearby and then watch how quickly their barely interested teens get suddenly excited about the house you’re showing,” she says. “That’s just one benefit of being a neighborhood expert.” The final ingredient in her recipe for success is her team of high-performance agents and staff. “I have the best team in the world,” Shelley says. “They are all experienced, motivated professionals who work hard and always super-serve our clients. I would not want to do this job without them. As a team, we rank #8 nationally, which is a testament to their talent and their effort.” When she’s not helping clients buy and sell homes, she’s usually fixing them up. “Remodeling and redecorating are my passion,” Shelley tells us. “It’s a way for me to exercise the creative part of my brain while investing in my own home. The only problem is that I quickly run out of rooms in my house to redecorate.” Thankfully, Shelley has found an outlet for her design efforts. “I have been asked for design tips by friends and neighbors more times than I can count. And I’m always happy to help. Decorating is subjective, so I’m flattered when someone asks me for design advice.”
The third part of the recipe for Shelley’s success as a Realtor is local expertise. When you’re first starting out in real estate most Realtors take any piece of business you can get – even if it’s on the other side of town. But as your business grows, it becomes increasingly inefficient to properly service a listing on the other side of town. Shelley tells us about the strategy that sets her apart from other Realtors: “Early on, I made the decision to focus my energy on the local community and become a neighborhood expert. By concentrating on the Norterra and Anthem areas, I’m constantly increasing my knowledge about the local community.”
Shelley’s eye for design has caught the attention of the local TV stations. She’s a semi-regular guest on TV segments highlighting the latest design trends, and how they affect real estate prices. The combination of her decorating skills, real estate experience, and comfort level in front of the camera makes her an ideal and soughtafter guest for TV. It’s great exposure that boosts her marketing presence.
This neighborhood expertise helps Shelley better serve her sellers with everything from pricing, listing descriptions, and home inventory. And her buyers benefit from inside knowledge about the community. “I know which floorplans are the most sought-after,” she adds. “I can tell you about the hidden features - and quirks - of each model. I know which elevations have the best porch for hiding Amazon packages, and which backyards see the most critters. For home buyers, there’s value in knowing which street goes all-in with Christmas lights, which section of the neighborhood has a lot of kids, and which is the quiet cul-de-sac.”
How has all this marketing panned out? Forty percent of Shelley’s business comes from new clients. The other 60% is made up of repeat customers and referrals. “This tells me two things: it means my marketing strategy for attracting new business is working. It also tells me The Sakala Group is delivering on the promises we make in our marketing messages,” she says. “Let’s face it: everyone knows someone who is a real estate agent. So, when I get a new listing, I know that the seller actively bypassed a friend or family member and hired me instead. That’s a very high level of trust and a great motivator for me to make my customers outrageously happy.”
As a resident, Shelley keeps her ear to the ground about new restaurants and

APS Deadline September 30th Homeowners Must Act Now
H
omeowners must sign up for solar and have an APS Solar Reservation approved by APS by end of day September 30 in order to receive and be grandfathered in to the current cash price for solar system production exported to the grid. Homeowners who go solar after the September 30th deadline will receive a substantially lower cash credit.
A typical rooftop solar system produces a large surplus of power in the Arizona spring months when we have abundant sunshine but little or no need for air conditioning. This power is sold to APS at the price set by the ACC and the cash credit is added to the customer’s account. For systems that are designed to produce the same power per year as the homeowner consumes per year (1:1 ratio), the homeowner will sell 50% to 60% of their solar production back to APS, which creates a cash credit that will be used to pay APS for the additional kWh’s needed in the summer months when the system is producing a deficit amount of the power needed. This ends up being thousands of kWhs sold every year and so the price per unit is very important. The less homeowners get paid from APS, the less cash credit their spring production will generate and the more the homeowner will have to come out of pocket to cover the summer bills. With the exception of 2020 when the ACC voted to postpone the price drop to October 2021 due to the pandemic, the price APS pays the customer for their credits has been dropping yearly since 2017 when the ACC approved ending Net Metering and replacing it with a form of Net Billing, known as RCP. Prior to 2017, customers who installed solar were grandfathered into Net Metering, which provided homeowners a 1:1 kWh credit, which meant they are getting full price for their production as compared to what they were being charged. A system designed to
GO SOLAR
produce 100% of the customer’s usage would leave them with a $20 remaining bill for APS fees and other taxes. Since September 2017, homeowners have been getting grandfathered into the RCP program and their credit is based on the price that APS is required to pay in the year that they sign up. In 2017/18 that price was 12.9 cents. In 2018/19 it was lowered to 11.6 cents and then dropped again in 2019/20 to 10.45 cents where it is today and will be until September 30. At the current buyback rate a homeowner that has a 1:1 or 100% usage to production design will experience a $40 to $80 average remaining APS bill depending on system size. This has increased from the $20 per month under Net Metering and will increase again for customers that go solar after September 30. The good news about RCP is that, unlike Net Metering, homeowners can reduce their annual APS net bill to $0 per year by increasing the number of panels to produce enough additional cash to cover the APS differential in prices, fees and other taxes. Once the buyback rate drops in October it will take more panels to get the net to zero. There is very little, but enough time left, to get a solar system custom designed for your home and have the APS reservation submitted and approved before the deadline. Contact Sunsolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have the design prepared for your home free of charge. Real Estate New Business Development and The Impact On Local Real Estate By Shelley Sakala
N
orth Phoenix is about to get an economic boost. The forthcoming Taiwan Semiconductor manufacturing plant will reportedly add 1,900 new jobs to the area – but that’s just the beginning. Building a 3.8 million square foot plant requires huge construction contracts, which means a lot of work and a lot of workers. Steel, concrete, electrical, HVAC, tech, paint, plumbing, and carpentry. Plus, road construction, exterior landscaping, and furnishings. The economic impact from
the construction will be significant. But what about impact on home values? Research indicates a relationship between businesses and home prices. Communities that get a new Starbucks, for example, appreciate in value faster than communities that don’t. This is called, appropriately, The Starbucks Effect. It’s an unofficial signal that a neighborhood is on the rise. But the relationship between homes and businesses can be a negative one. Neighborhoods with a nearby hospital or a shooting range may experience a drag on home values. We happen to live in a community with both, although it hasn’t hurt local home prices whatsoever. With the semiconductor plant, it’s safe to assume many of the 1,900 new employees will be relocating here from somewhere else. For this reason, we anticipate an uptick in demand for housing, which lifts home prices. At the same time, there may be an increase in congestion on the surface streets, which can hurt home values.
SO, WHICH IS IT? An industrial facility might not be the amenity residents were hoping for, but I don’t expect a negative impact on home values. The plant will be at the outer edge of our community, making it “close, but not too close.” Until and unless it starts emitting excessive noise, odors, or pollution, we probably won’t see any negative effect on local home values. WILL PRICES RISE? This will be an interesting scenario to watch. I believe the semiconductor plant will indirectly boost our home prices. Here’s why: we will see more people relocating to the area, as well as those commuting here each day. Every new person will be a consumer who frequents local shops and restaurants, which in turn, attracts more shops and restaurants (which all require employees). These new employees will frequent local shops and restaurants, continuing the cycle. Larger stores take notice of this population growth, and
respond by opening new locations in the community (which requires even more employees). A perfect example of this is Fry’s, which is building their second supermarket in the community in a span of five years. Big companies like Kroger (the parent company of Fry’s) don’t break ground on new locations unless they have the population data and projections to support the expansion. If you see a new grocery store going up, it’s a safe bet that the population is expected to grow. Call it The Fry’s Effect. More people equals increased housing demand, which equals higher home values. Not a guarantee, but a pretty safe bet. Shelley Sakala is a local Realtor and owner of The Sakala Group Real Estate.

“This new Middle Vistas neighborhood is in a highly desirable location and it’s even more desirable now that this major semiconductor plant is under construction,” says Jeff Gunderson, senior vice president of land acquisition and development for Lennar.
“Our customers are already reaching out to us and excited about this new neighborhood,” Gunderson shares. “Available land near the I-17 is difficult to come by and we’re thrilled to have another community right near this major transportation corridor.”

The location is one of the top new job creation sites in the Valley as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is building a 1,128-acre manufacturing plant in the same area. Lennar had identified the site and was working with the city of Phoenix long before TSMC announced plans to build a plant nearby, according to the company.
The site backs up to what will become a pristine mountain preserve. Of the 190-acre parcel, Lennar is donating 120 acres to the city of Phoenix for the preserve. The remaining 70 acres will be used for homes. Lennar’s community amenities will feature parks and trail systems leading directly into the preserve, in addition to ramadas and tot lots.

The luxury wellness resort is located on beachfront property, which is ideal for guests who are looking to enjoy the sun and sand. There are two sparkling pools with swim-up bars, endless rows of chaise lounges and day beds, surrounded by hundreds of palm trees and lush greenery, making you feel like you’re in a secluded oasis. When it comes to food, there is no lack of amazing meal options at the Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta. At Arrecifes Seafood & Steakhouse, guests

The Spa at Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta is tucked past the property’s beautiful garden and offers treatment rooms for singles and couples, as well as the opportunity enjoy an al fresco spa treatment beachside in a private pergola. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal
MOVIE REVIEWS The Suicide Squad
with their actors bringing to the screen the humanity and the pain of their pasts. Most of all, it’s a movie that’s confident in what it is and, in today’s big budget market, that’s a rarity. The Green Knight
Old A group of tourists find themselves trapped on a beach that causes them to age rapidly. M. Night Shyamalan is one of our best thriller directors today and Old is a reminder of that. It’s an unusual movie, with performances that could be called stale and distracted. However, given the disorienting and frantic nature of the story, it’s appropriate. The fear of the situation is one where no one can act normal, whether by their own emotions or their own degradation. Shyamalan shows that through his script and Mike Gioulakis’ unique camerawork. The actors do an incredible job keeping their personalities consistent as they grow older, while still changing. You even buy into their sudden change in intelligence and speech. It’s not scary, but more a creepy film that effectively preys on your fears of aging. Don’t Breathe 2
figures show up to take the girl, his true nature is revealed. Don’t Breathe 2 has an interesting idea, particularly when questioning the morals of each character you meet. The problem, as with many bad movies with cool ideas, is the execution. It is unable to commit to any of their characters being grey, whether in some forced “twist” or in a pathetic attempt to make you feel bad for them. This leads to one-dimensional characters and underwhelming performances. Even the usually great Stephen Lang seems bored. The movie seems more obsessed with being hardcore and gross rather than telling a good story. To be fair it is, but part of what made the first film a nice surprise was that it limited its gore. Rodo Sayagues is decent in his directorial debut, but not much of his work stands out from Fede Alvarez’s previous film. It’s a real disappointment.
SEPTEMBER RELEASES Task Force X is sent on another mission, with members old and new. This time they are headed into the jungles of an island containing secrets that will change the life course for several of our beloved/hated characters. The Suicide Squad is the kind of comic book movie that is rarely seen. It wears its inspiration on its sleeve (classic war movie like The Dirty Dozen) while still carving its identity, thanks to its creator James Gunn’s mixture of humor and heart. The action is large and violent. Its mixture of practical and digital effects blending together so well while embracing the cartoonish nature of comics. The mixture of new and old characters brings to life what the film is really all about: lost souls finding their purpose. Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 are clearly the standouts
King Arthur’s nephew goes on a quest to fulfil a task from a mysterious plantlike figure. A film that requires a lot of patience, The Green Knight rewards those who commit to what it has going for it. Dev Patel’s performance walks the line between bravery and arrogance. He gives his character several layers of personality. The slow nature of the movie matches the tone, as each chapter is, in a way, its own little movie with a different tone and feeling. Sometimes it’s horror, sometimes dramatic, but it works. Each supporting character plays an equally important role in the overall story. Visually, it’s one of the most gorgeous movies you’ll see this year. The story seems to jump off the screen and come to life. A true work of art.
