Anthem’s 22nd Independence Day Celebration on July 3 All The Details You Need For This Popular Annual Event Photos Courtesy of the Anthem Community Council ANTHEM WILL HOST ITS 22ND INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION ON SUNDAY, JULY 3 AT THE ANTHEM COMMUNITY PARK FROM 5:30-9:30 P.M. A fireworks display will cap off the event, which also includes rides, inflatables, food vendors, dancing, and more.

Rides and inflatables will be set up on Softball Field #1 with water slides on Softball Fields #2. Everyone is required to have a wristband to ride the slides or enjoy the inflatables; these will be available for purchase during the month of June.

Starting at 9 p.m., the fireworks show will immediately follow the singing of the National Anthem, which will be performed by a local vocalist chosen at the June 9 auditions. (Fireworks will launch weather permitting.)

The Anthem Community Council (ACC) shares that a lot of upfront work is required for this popular event. The ACC works very closely with area law enforcement, the Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical Department, and the Maricopa County Department of Transportation to plan for this, which is the largest annual event in Anthem Community Park. After 22 years, this event continues to be an Anthem favorite and fun for people of all ages, according to the ACC.

A traffic control plan takes effect mid-afternoon on July 3. Some Anthem amenities will close early to allow for event preparation. The walking bridge between the Community Center and Community Park and the Skate Park will close at 2 p.m. The skate park will reopen at 6 p.m. as a fireworks viewing area for those with special needs. The Community Center will close at 3 p.m. Vehicles must be removed from the parking lot by 3 p.m. because the area is a fireworks fallout zone.

Residents and guests are welcome to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy picnic-style in the park (personal BBQ grills are not allowed). Outside food, beverages, and seating are not permitted within the fenced field areas. Attendees are encouraged to visit the Food Court and Rotary Beer Garden. As a reminder, attendees are not allowed to bring or launch personal fireworks in Community Park; however, lawn chairs or blankets to watch the fireworks in the open areas of the park are recommended. It is also recommended to leave pets at home as the fireworks and heat can be difficult and frightening for them. If pets do attend, they must be always leashed (harnesses are recommended).

Colorado River Water Shortage Caused by Climate Change Requires Phoenicians To Adapt Information and Photo Courtesy of Phoenix Water Services AT A RECENT BRIEFING, OFFICIALS WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES, AND CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT DELIVERED A STARK ASSESSMENT OF THE COLORADO RIVER. As impacts of climate change persist, more significant Colorado River cuts are likely to occur. Those reductions will impact the amount of Colorado River water available to Phoenix and other central Arizona municipalities, farmers, and tribes. Central Arizona is currently experiencing the first-ever declared shortage on the Colorado River.

“Three things are true about this situation: first, it is serious. Second, it will require the city to think differently, and plan differently, for how we use water.

Third, we need to enlist the people of Phoenix as our partners in the hard work ahead,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Researchers are serious when they tell us this megadrought is the worst in at least 1,200 years.

The more we can encourage people and businesses to think creatively about how to reduce water consumption now, the better off we will be.”

Residential consumption makes up approximately 70% of water use in Phoenix. With just a little effort, every Phoenix Water customer can easily reduce their water use by 1% to 5%, saving millions of gallons of water every year.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOMES AND BUSINESSES: • Do not overwater landscaping and use a smart irrigation controller to reduce outdoor water use. Text WHENTOWATER to 33222 for simple monthly reminders to keep your watering on track.

• Find and fix leaks inside and outside.

• Know the optimal amount of water to use in your home with the Water Usage Calculator.

• Choose xeriscape by removing or reducing grass lawns and planting native or desert adapted trees, shrubs, and groundcover that require little water once established.

• Upgrade to water-saving toilets and a low water use dishwasher and washing machine.

• Cover swimming pools to reduce evaporation.

While asking residents and businesses to do their part, the city is increasing its conservation outreach effort.

For example, the Phoenix Water Conservation team expanded its homeowner’s associations outdoor water efficiency program to reach more neighborhoods.

After meeting with just six associations, the Water Conservation team identified a potential for more than 20 million gallons per year of savings – enough water to supply 184 families for a year. As more HOAs participate, Phoenix expects even more water savings.

The city has worked hard to develop a sustainable water supply and has been designated by the state as having a 100-year assured water supply. In addition, Phoenix recycles nearly all its wastewater, delivering it for use in agriculture, energy production, urban irrigation, aquifer recharge, and riparian wetland maintenance.

Phoenix will continue to plan, invest and conserve to ensure a sustainable future while providing safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers without interruption. Additionally, the city will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River as we strive to become the most sustainable desert city in the world.

Over the course of decades, Phoenix developed a robust and diverse water resource portfolio with multiple sources and contingency supplies to provide safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers. The Colorado River currently supplies 40% of the water Phoenix uses.

“The Colorado River shortage is coming sooner than anticipated,” says Phoenix Water Services Director Troy Hayes. “But all the planning and investment in infrastructure that we have done has put the city in a good place to manage the challenging conditions.”

The city has invested in infrastructure and underground water storage, and has been a strong pioneer in water conservation in anticipation of a Colorado River shortage. Yet, as the drought intensifies, the city must continue to innovate new, proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River, which is over-allocated and in decline due to climate change.

The city is prepared to implement additional actions, including those described in its Drought Management Plan.

Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign

Nonprofit Accepting Monetary, Nonperishable Food and Water Donations for Heat Relief THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS. According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water.

Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies.

PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission.

“During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa.

“While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.”

Several municipalities have created partnerships with the Mission, bringing relief to the streets in the Mission’s Hope Coach vehicles to distribute water, toiletries, and case management services.

“Anything helps in this undertaking to save and change lives, whether it’s through a monetary donation, dropping off a case of water or starting a water drive,” says Brissa. “This is so much more than a handout of water. This is arming people with the tools to change their lives and move out of harm’s way.”

Greater Phoenix Unemployment Rate Falls Below 3%

By Eric Jay Toll THE UNADJUSTED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN GREATER PHOENIX RECENTLY DROPPED TO 2.4 PERCENT, DOWN NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF A POINT FROM FEBRUARY’S 3.1 PERCENT AND HALF OF LAST YEAR’S 5.4 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN MARCH. Robust hiring brought the Phoenix metro workforce to

nearly 2.5 million people in March, up 110,800 from March last year. (Editor’s note: March data is the latest information available as of press time.)

Hospitality (up 17,600 jobs in year-over-year comparisons) and retail (up 14,400 jobs in March 2022 over March 2021) showed strong gains recovering to nearly pre-pandemic levels. The professional, scientific,

and technical sectors continued a strong hiring trend, remaining among the top three industries for the fourth month in a row, adding 11,100 new hires in March over last year. Nearly all the reported professional, technical and scientific hires were in Greater Phoenix this past year. Healthcare hiring was fourth with 9,100 new hires.

Manufacturing added more jobs than construction, with 5,400 new hires on the production lines compared to 4,000 building new developments in year-over-year job growth.

Arizona saw its unemployment rate continue to come in below the U.S. rate, a 3.3 adjusted unemployment rate in Arizona, compared to the national 3.6 rate.

Most hiring elsewhere in the state was in the retail, construction, healthcare, and government sectors.

Greater Phoenix continues its gains in the advanced industry sectors: technology, bioscience healthcare, manufacturing, and business and financial services.

In the four advanced industries, Greater Phoenix has added 130,900 advanced industry jobs since April 2020, the first month in which the pandemic affected employment, which account for more than half of all new jobs since the beginning of the pandemic.

City News Valley Residents Team Up to Encourage The State to Ban Declawing Cats WHILE IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, THERE ARE CAT OWNERS WHO STILL ASK VETS TO DECLAW THEIR CATS, WHICH IS AN AMPUTATION OF THE CAT’S “FINGERS AND TOES.”

It is illegal in the state of New York and banned in 40 countries worldwide.

According to many experts, it’s extremely painful to cats and they never fully recover.

Several Valley residents are spearheading an effort to ban the practice in the state of Arizona so that no additional cats suffer from this surgical procedure. One such person is Kallie Rose.

“When I found out that declawing cats was still legal in Arizona, I knew I had to step up and take a stand. All our pets are precious, but no other species are subjected to the amputation that cats still endure. While many vets refuse to perform this barbaric surgery, it is still possible to get it done,” Rose says. “It’s imperative that we prevent additional suffering.”

Nonprofit organization The Paw Project is heading up a nationwide effort, state by state, to make declawing cats illegal.

For more than two decades, they have been committed to educating the public,

legislators and veterinarians about how this potentially crippling surgical procedure can harm a cat’s physical health and result in disturbing behavioral changes. Unsuspecting cat guardians are often unaware that declawing is an amputation of a cat’s toes at the last joint. They do not realize that negative behavioral and health changes caused by declawing can be irreversible and permanent; in effect, trading one set of problems for another.

Arizona legislators are reaching across the aisles to move AZ Anti-Declaw Bill, HB2014 (formerly HB2224), all the way to Governor Ducey for signature before year end. It has already unanimously passed the Arizona Senate Commerce Committee. The bill, which would prohibit non-therapeutic declawing, was authored by State Representative Amish Shah, MD (D - Phoenix) and State Representative John Kavanagh (R - Fountain Hills). The bill must pass both houses of the legislature and be signed by the governor before becoming law. Unfortunately, there is opposition to the bill. “It’s hard to believe that anyone would oppose this bill,” said Shah, who is also an ER doctor and familiar with the painful procedure. “In my mind, there’s no way to rationalize allowing an animal to suffer in this way.”

“It’s time we get this anti-declaw bill passed. We have the support of veterinarians such as VCA Animal Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital who have already banned the practice and our local animal rescue organizations like the Arizona Humane Society,” Rose adds. “More than 70% of people polled are in favor of making declawing illegal; the additional 30% probably just need to be educated, which is what we are trying to do.”

They have since helped hundreds of local families and will continue to help more and more families each year. “Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children is truly thankful for the continued support from Barro’s Pizza in partnership with Pepsi,” Funari says. “Their generosity fuels our critical support and programs that we provide to Arizona families who have a child with cancer.”

Foothills Food Bank Expands, Opens New Pantry in New River TO BETTER SERVE THOSE FACING HUNGER IN THE NORTH VALLEY, THE FOOTHILLS FOOD BANK AND RESOURCE CENTER HAS OPENED A NEW COMMUNITY PANTRY THAT IS HOUSED AT MY CROSSROADS CHURCH IN NEW RIVER. “We know that one in five Arizona residents are food

insecure,” says Leigh Zydonik, Executive Director of the food bank. “And while there is food available, fuel prices and lack of reliable transportation makes it difficult, sometimes impossible, for many to come to the food bank. So, we are taking our assets and expertise to the neighborhoods we serve.”

The New River pantry is now available every Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at My Crossroads Church, located at 42425 N. New River Road. No proof of citizenship or need is required.

The pantry joins the Foothills Food Bank’s existing locations in Cave Creek and Black Canyon City in addition to a mobile market and micro pantries in local public buildings.

“We continue to strengthen our commitment to the people we serve by offering obtainable access to food,” Zydonik adds.

“YOUR DAUGHTER HAS CEREBRAL PALSY,” MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST FRIGHTENING THINGS A PARENT CAN HEAR. For Heather and Charles Duffy, receiving the initial diagnosis for their youngest daughter, Charlie, was one of the most confusing, shocking and scary things they could imagine.

When most people look at Charlie now, they see a confident teenager. She’s an honor roll student, a star softball player who just went to semifinals for state with Northwest Christian High School, and a girl who has dreams to get a college sports scholarship. But that wasn’t always the case.

Charlie has encountered a lot of adversity in her 15 years.

“My husband and I had no knowledge about cerebral palsy, let alone how it would affect our daughter and what her future would hold,” says Heather. “In the beginning, we educated ourselves by doing a lot of online research. Charlie’s physical therapist at the time wasn’t familiar with the diagnosis nor did she have any training working with someone with cerebral palsy. That’s when our case manager referred Charlie to United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Arizona for physical therapy and family resources, which changed our lives forever.”

Nominating Charlie as a UCP Ambassador was an obvious choice for the 70-year-old nonprofit organization, UCP of Central Arizona.

“Charlie was chosen as an ambassador because she faithfully came to therapy and made huge strides throughout the years,” says Karla Verdugo, marketing manager at UCP of Central Arizona. “Charlie embodies the ‘Life without Limits’ spirit UCP stands for and is an inspiration to everyone she comes in contact with. Her story demonstrates what UCP is all about – that everyone has a champion within.”

When she was just three, Charlie was diagnosed with hemiplegic cerebral palsy which affects the entire left side of her body including her left leg and hip. In addition to countless hours of physical and occupational therapy, she has undergone more than 20 medical procedures. She has had her Achilles tendons and hamstrings cut and lengthened and a metal extender plate inserted into her femur. She has

These are things most kids take for granted, but for me, these relatively simple movements took months – even years – to perfect in physical therapy.”

“United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona will be part of our lives and Charlie’s life forever,” Heather adds. “Without them Charlie would not be where she is today.”

Ambassadors represent UCP in public and help create awareness of the organization’s mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities.

For Charlie, being a UCP Ambassador provides an opportunity to use her voice to bring awareness and compassion to children and adults with special needs. She is proud to inspire and motivate others to be their best selves, no matter what challenges they encounter.

“There was not one second I was ashamed or embarrassed for being different from other people,” Charlie says. “I was taught from a very young age that you don’t have to fit in or look like the person standing next to you. My disability doesn’t define me as a person. I hope my experiences encourage people to never judge a book by its cover because you don’t know the incredible journey and often massive hurdles some people have had to overcome.”

How Will Rising Interest Rates Impact Home Buying? An Expert Weighs In.

n this month’s real estate column, local realtor Shelley Sakala answers a reader’s timely question. North Phoenix resident Kevin asks, “I heard interest rates went up. I was planning to buy a house this year. Should I be worried?”

THE EXPERT ANSWER Yes, interest rates have gone up. But I promise things will be okay – eventually.

For those who study the economy (or study their grocery store receipts), the word of the day is inflation.

In its simplest form, inflation is the rise in the price of things you buy - like groceries, clothes, cars, and even houses. In an already hot real estate market, this is an even bigger problem. Not only are homes hard to find, but they’re getting more expensive to build (and to buy). Some inflation is expected, like when Grandpa reminds us that movies used to cost a nickel and iPhones were $499. But too much inflation causes the

Federal Reserve to get involved – and the cure can be as painful as the illness.

As a strategy to help slow inflation, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates last month. This affects all types of borrowed money, including credit cards, consumer loans, and mortgages. That means the same $600,000 house – even if the price remains the same - will cost more to buy than it did the previous month. And what’s worse, the Federal Reserve is expected to keep raising rates throughout this year to fight inflation. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research at the National Association of Realtors, predicts 8-10 rate hikes this year, according to a recent “Forbes” article.

Unless you’re a cash buyer, you can expect to feel financial pain when buying a home this year. The chart to the right is a side-by-side comparison of how higher interest rates impact your mortgage payment. Note: If you already have a fixed rate mortgage, your payments won’t change. Changes in rates only affect new loans as well as mortgages with adjustable rates.

The good news is that eventually these rate hikes will help slow down home price appreciation. The bad news is that it won’t happen today. And until it does, Phoenix homes will be increasingly more expensive to buy and finance.

Oceans of Possibilities: Maricopa County Reads’ 2022 Summer Reading Program Begins

ixty-five libraries across the county are gearing up for Summer Reading as Maricopa County Reads opens June 1 with a community goal of 50 million minutes read. Maricopa County Reads is one of the county’s largest literacy efforts and plays a vital role in reducing learning loss while transitioning between school years.

“Building a community of readers means we are building a community of problem solvers, collaborators, and lifelong learners,” says Bill Gates, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 1. “The Summer Reading program is just one way to continue building an even brighter future for Maricopa County.”

Participants earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks. Additional points are earned for attending in-person and virtual events hosted by librarians and local performers, completing summer reading challenges, and participating in community experiences to find secret codes while exploring Maricopa County. Prizes vary based on the number of points readers achieve. Readers who achieve 1,000 points can choose a free book for their home library or to donate to a local Head Start classroom. The theme of this year’s program is “Oceans of Possibilities,” encouraging readers of all ages to explore the many stories from under the sea.

The primary goal of the program is to interrupt the summer slide, the common term given to the learning loss experienced by children while transitioning between school years. The secondary aim of the program is to promote early literacy among prereaders and their families during the summer months. The Maricopa County Reads summer reading program began in the summer of 2013. It has continued to grow, and now hosts 65 public, tribal and military base libraries within Maricopa County. More than 80,000 children, teens, and adults participate in the program annually.

The program runs through August 1 and all Phoenix Public Library locations are participating.

The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer

he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics.

One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library.

Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general.

In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.

Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day.

It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency.

Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.

A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier.

Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today!

Remember, as Dr. Suess wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke.

“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched.

“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-

breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace.

“Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.
