The Future Isn’t Looking Brighter for Fossil Fuel Diehards or Solar Stragglers. Go Solar Today. By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they

need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. The question is whether you’re prepared to thrive in the coming world of economic and geopolitical turbulence. If you’re ready to secure energy independence and security for your family, then contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Thompson Thrift’s Commercial and Residential Plans for the North Gateway Core

By Jeremiah Sosa Rendering Courtesy of Thompson Thrift THOMPSON THRIFT IS AN INTEGRATED FULL-SERVICE REAL ESTATE COMPANY WITH OFFICES IN INDIANA, TEXAS, AND PHOENIX. RECENTLY, THOMPSON THRIFT ANNOUNCED A NEW $100 MILLION MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH GATEWAY CORE THAT WILL INCLUDE RETAIL STORES, RESTAURANTS, RESIDENTIAL UNITS, AND RUNNING PATHS. The North Gateway Core development will be located east of I-17, between Sonoran Desert Drive and Dove Valley Road. “On this project, we’ve been able to bring our three divisions [retail, residential, 4 • April 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

and construction] together to create a beautifully designed mixed-use project. The entire property is approximately 30 acres; however, only 16 are developable,” explains Andrew Call, Vice President of Development for Thompson Thrift. “Part of the land is the Skunk Creek Wash area, which will include some pedestrian nodes and running paths that are right along the natural preserve area.”

national, regional, and local retailers and restaurants are currently negotiating to locate within the development.

On the east side of the development is going to be the mixed-use project, which will see about 35,000 square feet of retail stores and restaurants and approximately 224 residential units. Two restaurants already planned for the North Gateway Core development are Oregano’s, a local, family-owned pizza chain, and Twisted Sugar, a gourmet cookie shop. Several other

The 224 residential units on the property are planned to be split up into two four-story multifamily residential buildings, including parking and garages. There will also be a two-story clubhouse and other amenities.

“I think this project will positively impact this community and bring a lot of new restaurants and businesses to the area that are not there yet,” says Call. “All the research that we’ve seen and done shows a strong need and desire to have some of these restaurants out there.”

As to why Thompson Thrift chose the North Phoenix area for their development, Call says that his team

had noticed the recent growth in the area over the past few years, along with the current growth like the new TSMC plant located within eyesight from the development. “This area has always been a priority for us. We’ve looked at metro Phoenix and just the general Phoenix market. It’s a fantastic area,” says Call. “The future is very, very bright. It’s probably one of the strongest areas from an economic growth standpoint and general population growth in the Phoenix area.” Thompson Thrift plans to start construction on the North Gateway Core development in late 2022 and hopes to see some businesses open in the third quarter of 2023. Cutter Aviation Breaks Ground on New Hangar Complex at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport CUTTER AVIATION HAS BROKEN GROUND ON ITS $12 MILLION DOLLAR HANGAR COMPLEX AT PHOENIX DEER VALLEY AIRPORT. Will Cutter, President and CEO of Cutter Aviation, and Phoenix City Councilwoman Ann O’Brien, United States Senator Kyrsten Sinema along with various invited guests, airport officials and media, recently held an official ceremony to celebrate the milestone. The first phase of the 60,000 square feet structure, expected to be completed by early 2023, will give much needed relief to the hangar demand in this fast-paced growing region. The hangar complex also includes 3,700 square feet of office space.

“We are excited to begin the construction of this new hangar complex at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport and continue with our commitment to Phoenix and the Deer Valley Regional Airport. The opportunity to invest, grow, create new jobs, and support regional economic development for the city of Phoenix has never been greater,” says Will Cutter. “There hasn’t been any new construction at the nation’s second-busiest general aviation airport in nearly 20 years. Our plan is to continue to invest in our community for many years to come, and this new hangar is just the beginning of many great things coming to the Deer Valley region.” The Phillips 66-branded facility is the sole fuel provider

on the field and one of nine in Cutter’s network of world-class facilities. Located on the west side of the airport just off taxiway Charlie, the three-community hangar complex will be able to accommodate up to a Gulfstream G-700 or Bombardier Global Express. Safety Tips for Lake Adventures By Lynn Lovelady, Scorpion Bay Marina General Manager SPENDING TIME WITH THOSE WE LOVE AT LAKE PLEASANT ENJOYING THE IDYLLIC LAKE VIEWS, COOL WATER, AND THE WARM SUN IS AT THE TOP OF MANY PEOPLE’S LISTS THIS SPRING AND SUMMER. As you make your way to Scorpion Bay Marina, here are some tips to follow for a safe and enjoyable adventure.

1. ARRIVE EARLY: This is one of the busiest times of the year at Lake Pleasant. Visitors to the lake should plan to get there early to get a spot and avoid rushing and speeding to maintain safety for everyone. Be aware of others around you and take extra precautions to prevent accidents and injury. Also be sure to check the Maricopa County Parks Department website for upto-date park information. 2. DESIGNATE A CAPTAIN: At the beginning of the day, each family or group should assign someone to act as the head of the party. The captain makes sure all members of the party are safe and are where they are supposed to be throughout the day. Keeping an ongoing headcount during the day is reccomended. 3. DRINK RESPONSIBLY: Although most water safety organizations warn lake-goers to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, those who choose to imbibe alcohol should do so responsibly. Be sure to keep hydrated with water even when not thirsty and be sure to avoid operating a boat or any other watercraft while intoxicated. Assign a designated driver not only for your time on the lake but also for your drive home.

myhyperlocalnews.com

4. LIFEJACKETS ARE REQUIRED: The moment kids arrive at the Scorpion Bay dock, it’s a good idea to put a lifejacket on them. State and federal law require children 13 and under to wear a wellfitting, Coast Guard-approved life jacket when they are on board any boat; all others must have a life jacket readily accessible. It’s important to note that all people on personal watercraft or being towed by a boat must wear a life jacket regardless of their age. Remember to always be sure to have enough life jackets in your watercraft for everyone on board. 5. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE: Although the lake is a place for people to kick back and relax, it is an important time to keep hydrated. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and protective attire—including hats and sunglasses— along with reducing activity during the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. are all parts of staying hydrated. Dehydration is often the root cause of sickness and accidents on the lake, so be sure to learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses to make sure everyone in your group stays healthy.

6. NEVER SWIM ALONE: The buddy system is always a good idea around water. Make sure before you do any activities on the lake that everyone has a buddy to keep their eye on throughout the day— swimming alone is unsafe, even for adults. Never leave young children unattended near water and never ask a child to watch another child near water. 7. KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER: Weather conditions can change quickly at Lake Pleasant. If there is any chance of inclement weather, be sure to be up to date on forecasts at the National Weather Service site. Any visitors on land should stay out of the washes. Also, if you are on a watercraft, make sure to make your way to the docks before weather conditions become dangerous. Overcrowded docks can prevent visitors from being able to get their watercraft out of the water safely. Scorpion Bay is Arizona’s premier floating playground, offering everything from daily pontoon and ski boat rentals to floating cabins for a week in the sun to slips for longterm live-aboard lifestyles. SONS OF KEMET, APRIL 15 From the mind of visionary saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings comes Sons of Kemet, an eclectic project combining elements of otherworldly jazz, funk-infused rock, cerebral hip hop, Caribbean folk, and diverse African traditions. The London-based quartet features some of the most progressive 21stcentury talents in British jazz and beyond. Sons of Kemet is born of many vital elements, including a name that nods to ancient Egyptian culture and an unusual instrumentation combining tenor sax, tuba, and a pair of dynamic drummers.

with more than 40 recordings to his credit, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band style, and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. Scofield is joined by a stellar band featuring Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson, among others), Vicente Archer (string bass with Robert Glasper, Louis Hayes, and Scofield Combo 66, etc.), and drummer Josh Dion.

RHAPSODY MUSIC IS IN THE BUSINESS OF INSPIRING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC—AND NOW THEY ARE READY TO TURN PLAYING INTO INSPIRED GIVING THROUGH THEIR NEW “PLAY IT FORWARD” INITIATIVE. Four times a year, Rhapsody Music will focus on an Arizona organization that spends their days committed to helping those in need. When students come to play at the store, they can drop off the requested items for that month’s cause. Community members are welcome to do so as well. In addition to what is collected, Rhapsody will also give back a percentage of private lesson revenue to the chosen nonprofit. “The world has been through so much. While the pandemic was a crazy time for our business, I couldn’t stop thinking about those still going through hardships that existed far before March 2020,” says owner Sean Maplethorpe. “Music is already an art that is meant to be shared with others, to uplift people, to make people feel better about whatever they might be going through. This effort was our way to use that to give back physical items to those in need.” Rhapsody’s first Play It Forward choice organization is Chrysalis (noabuse.org), a Valley nonprofit. For 40 years, they have offered comprehensive resources, confidential support, shelter, and help to those impacted by domestic violence in Arizona. “Since 1981, Chrysalis has led the community in providing broad-based solutions to prevent domestic abuse using a trauma-informed approach,” says Steven Miller, Chrysalis’ Philanthropy Manager. “Our work would not be possible without the generous support of community partners. These donations go directly toward helping families reclaim their lives as they establish safe and secure independent living. We truly

Locals can find the full list at Rhapsody Music’s website at RhapsodyMusicAZ.com. Rhapsody Music will be collecting items for Chrysalis through April 15. Community members can drop off donations at Rhapsody Music, located at 42201 N. 41st Drive, Suite 132, in Anthem. “What we are doing isn’t new, but giving to others is right in this moment,” says Maplethorpe. “If this inspires others to give, then the purpose of Rhapsody Music is even clearer to me.” Beginning in May, Rhapsody Music will begin collecting donations for local nonprofit Youth for Troops.

UCP of Central Arizona Expands Baby Clinic Services, Increases Early Intervention Opportunities By Amy Wolff Photos Courtesy of UPC

U

nited Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Arizona recently received a grant of $30,000 from the BHHS Legacy Foundation to expand UCP’s Baby Clinic services at the Laura Dozer Center in North Phoenix. The funds will provide early diagnosis support for local families dealing with cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders. “We are very grateful for this grant and the ability to serve even more babies who are experiencing motor delays and may be at risk for cerebral palsy or other neuromotor disorders,” says Valerie Pieraccini, Director of Therapy Programs and the Early Learning Center at UCP of Central Arizona. “Early detection of signs that indicate an infant is at risk for cerebral palsy can lead to either early diagnosis or increased surveillance of developmental milestones.” “If a child has cerebral palsy, early diagnosis can lead to specialized early treatment, taking advantage of developmental neuroplasticity to shape the way a baby’s brain is organizing itself through pruning and adding of neural connections,” Pieraccini adds. Following international guidelines, cerebral

palsy can be diagnosed in babies as early as three months old based on observed quality of movement and feeding irregularities for the infant. But most children in the U.S. are not diagnosed until they are two or three years old, which means lost time for early intervention and treatment. UCP of Central Arizona’s Baby Clinic provides access to targeted services for babies up to 18 months who are at risk for cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders. The state-of-the-art facility provides early detection services based on risk factors, outcomes of specific evaluations, surveillance of motor development, a consult with a neurologist or other specialist, and parental concerns. After diagnosis, the clinic offers targeted early treatment and services that are often lacking for babies with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

when something is amiss,” Pieraccini explains. “My best advice to parents is to trust your gut. There is a critical window of opportunity with developmental neuroplasticity prior to three years old so it’s an important time for parents to seek help from a professional who specializes in neurological disorders.” Pieraccini suggests concerned parents should watch their child carefully, write down what they observe, and take that list to their pediatrician. Even searching

for a few short videos online can illustrate missed milestones and developmental discrepancies. With support from the BHHS Legacy Foundation, UCP’s Baby Clinic will expand healthcare access by roughly 20-30% in the years ahead to serve additional babies and children at risk for cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders. UCP of Central Arizona is located at 1802 W. Parkside Lane. For more information, visit ucpofcentralaz.org.

Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disorder in childhood, yet it is often overlooked. New research shows that targeted therapeutic and biomedical treatment can change the trajectory for a child with cerebral palsy. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is dependent on early detection, diagnosis and intervention. “Parents are their child’s best advocate and, because of day-in and day-out interactions, they are better able to understand

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Julie Rohlfing. I am the owner of Q Bar and Grill and Quaintly Qute.

Laura and my brother Jimmy. My sister is a very important part of my life as we are very close. My husband JR is my solid gold. He is my everything: supportive, hardworking, kind, and the love of my life. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… My furry friends. I am an animal lover. I have two horses, a Paint and an Austrian Halflinger, that I ride frequently. My inside friends are Koa, a 145-pound Rhodesian Ridgeback, an English Labrador names Luke, and a small but feisty Corgi mix we call Romeo. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Pretty in Pink” with Molly Ringwald. She is a strong female character from the 80s and a fashionista that could make something out of nothing.

I’VE LIVED IN THE NORTH VALLEY FOR 20 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… There is space and the Sonoran Desert is so beautiful and unique in its topography. Living in the North Valley gives me the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful mountains, blooming cacti, and the ability to ride my horse right out of my front gate. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE… Is anything but typical. Owning and operating two business keeps me on my toes. Every day is different seven days a week. MY FAMILY… Has gotten smaller over the last few years. Both of my parents are deceased. I have two siblings—my sister 16 • April 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

day, my dream job would be to work as a fashion designer. I love to create! Being a daughter of a home economics teacher taught me the basic skills I needed and, as for the rest, I shoot from the hip. With trial and error, I eventually pull it all together perfectly. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “I Love This Bar” by Toby Keith. That song describes The Q Bar and Grill to a tee. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My best friend Lisa McDaniel. She is brilliant, driven and she truly believes in me. She is excellent at all of the things I am deficient in, making us the perfect team. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… The last real out loud laugh I had was with Lisa at the Arabian Horse Show. This year I was a vendor for my design business Quaintly

Qute. We had a faulty mannequin and taking her apart piece by piece and shoving her under the table with an audience was priceless! I laugh every time I think about it. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Hospice of the Valley (hov.org). They have impacted my family in so many ways and I absolutely love them. I do a large annual event with another restaurant group that raises several thousand dollars a year. All my charity dollars go to them. Will Current World Events Impact The Local Housing Market? A Real Estate Expert Weighs In. By Shelley Sakala

I

n this month’s real estate column, local realtor Shelley Sakala answers a reader’s timely question. North Phoenix resident Annie B. asks, “It seems like the war in Ukraine is affecting things like gas and grocery prices. Are home prices going to rise even more, too?”

THE EXPERT ANSWER If you’ve filled up a gas tank or a shopping cart any time over the past couple of months, you are painfully aware that things have gotten more expensive. Inflation appears to be the main culprit, not to mention the ongoing issues related to shortages, manufacturing, and the supply chain. This has not only affected the price of groceries and gasoline, but also big ticket items like new cars and houses. Yes, the already expensive housing market isn’t getting any cheaper. And the war in Ukraine isn’t helping. Uncertainty about world events has created volatility in the U.S. mortgage industry, causing mortgage interest rates to rise. According to Freddie Mac, the average rate on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage climbed nine basis points in one week in early March (one basis point is equal to 0.01 percentage points, or 1% of 1%). That’s an extra $20-$50 a month on a mortgage payment - a relatively small increase, but one that will ultimately push some buyers out of the market.

not forget that the price of everything else is higher this year. Coming up with an extra $50 a month is the last thing anyone needs right now. While it is my hope that the war is over by the time you read this article, there is a chance that the conflict will continue deeper into the year. And even if the war ends soon, we still might see additional rate increases this year as strategy by the Federal Reserve to fight inflation. With this in mind, I recommend that anyone planning to purchase a home this year is both mentally and financially prepared for rising interest rates that could affect one’s overall house payment. Hardest hit will be first-time home buyers who are already scraping and scratching to put in a competitive bid in a hyper competitive real estate market. Plus, let’s

Say “Hello” To Your New Neighbors—They’re Not All From L.A. By Eric Jay Toll

hen you hear about all these people making Greater Phoenix their new home, do you wonder where they are moving from? TOP MIGRATION SOURCES FOR GREATER PHOENIX The U.S. Census Bureau recently released data covering five years of migration patterns from its 2020 American Community Survey.

Topping the list for new Phoenicians was the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California metro area. More people moved into Greater Phoenix from L.A. than the entire population of El Mirage. Just about 38,000 Angelinos chose to make Phoenix their new home. The more than 11,600 people moving north from Tucson put that metro second on the list. Asian countries were the third largest group, with over 10,500 people moving to Phoenix, almost the same number as

the combined total of Central American, Mexican and Canadian immigrants coming to the Valley. The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes counties in Indiana and Wisconsin, was the fourth largest contributor of new residents, with almost 8,000 people leaving Lake Michigan snow for Sonoran Desert sunshine. Central America (not including Mexico) ranked fifth, adding nearly 7,000 people to the Greater Phoenix population. Other metropolitan areas rounding out the top ten include Seattle, San Diego and Riverside, California, Flagstaff, and the combined totals from Mexico and Canada (the Census Migration Report does not separate the countries but instead combines them as “Northern America”). None of these migration patterns comes as a surprise to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a city full of opportunity. People come here to improve their lives,” she says. “Large

businesses are finding we have welltrained professionals in key industries like biosciences, engineering, and green energy. Small businesses are finding the support and resources they need to grow and thrive. Our new neighbors like the job opportunities, the accessible outdoor life, and the kind of welcoming neighborhoods that make them feel right at home.” ARIZONA CONTINUES FAST POPULATION GROWTH Even though the 2020 Decennial Census numbers have hardly been digested, the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2021 state population estimates on December 21, 2021. The new data suggests that Arizona grew by nearly 100,000 people in 2021 over 2020, making the state the third fastest growing in the nation. Arizona continues to rank fourteenth nationally in population. Over the last three national census counts, seven out of ten new Arizonans moved into Greater Phoenix, a percentage that has increased each decade. NORTH PHOENIX NEWS • April 2022 • 17

Grand Canyon University, State of Arizona Partnership to Cover College Costs for Foster Children

A

rizona foster children will receive a full scholarship at Grand Canyon University (GCU) thanks to a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Arizona Department of Child Safety. The Fostering Futures Scholarships college pathway program covers 100% of the costs for tuition, fees, and yearround room and board for qualified Arizona foster children by combining GCU’s scholarships with state and federal funding resources. “With this program, Arizona’s foster kids will get the support they need to get a college degree,” says Governor Doug Ducey. “GCU’s commitment to academically supporting foster youth and providing them with yearround housing is a game-changer. This scholarship program offers a gateway for foster youth to realize their untapped

potential. I commend GCU for extending this generous offer to these young adults.” Nationwide, fewer than 10% of youth in foster care graduate with a fouryear degree. In addition to the cost of higher education, housing stability is among the biggest challenges for youth aging out of foster care. The Fostering Futures Scholarship program provides recipients with a year-round home on an active, vibrant college campus in a supportive environment, as well as the opportunity to begin their adult life without any student debt. The program will also incorporate additional support elements such as free tutoring, access to student worker jobs, mentoring, life skills programming designed to acclimate foster students into college life, and postgraduation planning assistance to help envision their path ahead.

“We strive to ensure that a private, Christian education is within reach for all – and students who have aged out of the state’s foster care system should be no exception,” says GCU President Brian Mueller. “Our affordable tuition and room and board rates help make this opportunity possible, and we already have faculty, staff and students on campus who are familiar with the foster care system. With the right support system in place, these students have the tools to earn a college degree without incurring any debt and set themselves up to achieve great things in their adult lives.” The first Fostering Futures Scholarships are scheduled to be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year. “Obtaining a college degree is difficult for every young adult, but especially so for youth in foster care, who face additional

barriers,” says DCS Director Mike Faust. “But foster youth are profoundly resilient and can flourish if they are given the tools and support they need. GCU’s scholarship program will help remove the barriers so they can succeed in college and life. We are honored to partner with GCU on this scholarship program and are grateful for their continued commitment to Arizona’s foster youth.”

READY, SET, CAMP! HOW TO SELECT THE BEST SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier

T

he summer months are coming and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy while they’re out of school. One solution is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.

options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for nonprofit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community centers and libraries, and online offerings for lower cost options for summer camp. Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents who need a place for their kids during the summer break, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have planned. Start the Search Now: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child, and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family.

Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money. Be sure that you consider all the expenses involved, including equipment, meals, and extras. There are also a variety of

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

IN THEATERS

Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.

the last few days of Yang’s life, finding out more about him, and the family’s reactions. The film touches on the melancholic discovery about who the person you thought you knew really was and the highs and lows of remembering them. It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

ON NETFLIX

all over the movie, killing any form of sincerity or emotional qualities. Several actors in the film are barely used; they are less characters and more objects to advance the story. Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

ON SHOWTIME

• “You Won’t Be Alone” (Limited) APRIL 8 • “Ambulance”

“Studio 666” The Foo Fighters move into an old mansion to complete their new album, only to discover the remains of its dark past. This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

ON HULU “Fresh” A woman’s new boyfriend turns out to not be the man of her dreams during a trip. 28 • April 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

“After Yang” A family prepares for the likelihood of their robotic companion’s likely death. “After Yang” reminds me a lot of when a family member or pet dies and the grief that comes with facing that inevitably. The story is presented as a series of episodes,

“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds

Las Palomas BEACH & GOLF RESORT

A stunning waterfront resort situated along the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico Photos Courtesy of Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort

D

uring the hot, dry summer, Arizonans crave sea breezes, cool ocean water, relaxation and activities that will keep the whole family active and entertained. While seaside resorts aren’t part of our desert landscape, Puerto Peñasco (commonly referred to as Rocky Point), is often considered “Arizona’s beach” due to its proximity to our border and its popularity as a vacation destination for desert dwellers. Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, located in the exclusive Sandy Beach area of Rocky Point, features more than 800 contemporary condos perfect for families, friends and couples looking for a beach getaway just hours away from Phoenix.

Luxury condominiums range from one to four bedrooms, each with its own terrace or balcony to take in the breathtaking views and can sleep up to 10 people. Las Palomas was the first resort in Rocky Point to receive a four-diamond rating from AAA. It has also been recognized with a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award for two years in a row, placing it in the top 10 percent of hotels worldwide. It’s located just 10 minutes from Old Port and downtown — where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and shops — and popular Rocky Point watering holes and attractions with live music on the beach. Jacques Cousteau once called Mexico’s Sea of Cortéz “the world’s aquarium.” Set against the sea, and its beautiful beaches, Las Palomas is an ideal locale for exploring or simply taking in the views. Those looking for an active vacation can enjoy Las Palomas as their home base for deep sea fishing, snorkeling, parasailing, or kayaking in the Sea of Cortéz, or hiking or cycling in the surrounding areas. Even if you choose to stay on the secured grounds of the resort, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for every member of the family. 34 • April 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

You can pack light for a road trip to Las Palomas – bathing suits and flip flops are all you need during the day, when you can drift on the property’s lazy river, take a trip down the water slide, or lounge in a gorgeous negative-edge pool, taking in the spectacular views and enjoying a cocktail from one of the swim-up bars. Or stroll over to the full-service spa to indulge in a massage, facial or body treatment. Bring workout wear if you want to participate in activities like Zumba, Aquaerobics, or stretching, or to exercise in the fitness center. If golf is more your speed, Las Palomas is home to The Links, the only true links golf course on Sandy Beach. Open to the public, it is a professional 18-hole, par-72 course that hosts several events throughout the year and attracts world class professional and amateur players, such as the resort’s annual anniversary golf tournament to be held May 13-15. If you’re looking for world-class cuisine, Las Palomas is the home of one of the finest restaurants in Rocky Point, La Maria Bistro & Fine Cuisine, featuring Mexican and world fusion in a beautiful seaside setting. Or enjoy gourmet options from Citron Fine Cuisine, Las Palomas’ French themed full-service restaurant. Both venues feature charming bars that are perfect gathering spots for enjoying fine wine, cervezas, margaritas or sophisticated cocktails. There’s always something happening at Las Palomas, whether a gastronomy class, a beer or wine tasting, or a holiday celebration. You can make a vacation to Rocky Point as adventurous or as laid-back as you want it to be – and even change it up from day to day.
