PHOENIX PARKS AND RECREATION LAUNCHES RANGER-LED HIKING GROUP ‘HIKE RIGHT PHX’

The city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation department recently launched a new monthly hiking group, Hike Right PHX. This group is aimed at promoting safe hiking practices for people of all experience levels and will be led by Phoenix Park Rangers.

Hiking is incredibly popular in Phoenix, with its beautiful desert landscapes and scenic trails. However, with this increase in popularity comes a need for education on how to hike safely and create a community atmosphere for hikers of all abilities.

“We are thrilled to launch Hike Right PHX as a way to promote safe hiking practices to both new and regular hikers in our community,” Parks and Recreation Director Cynthia Aguilar says. “Our park rangers are experts in trail safety and provide a community atmosphere for hikers of all abilities.”

Hike Right PHX will offer monthly hikes on the second Saturday of each month. The first hike will take place on Saturday, March 9 at 8 a.m. at North Mountain Visitor Center, 12950 N 7th St., in Phoenix.

Registration is recommended for Hike Right PHX and can be completed online through Phoenix Parks and Recreation. For more information, visit http://tinyurl. com/2p87m4d.

PHOENIX APPROVES CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT FOR REHABILITATION OF CAVE CREEK WATER RECLAMATION PLANT

Rendering courtesy of city of Phoenix

The Phoenix City Council voted unanimously on February 7 to move forward with a pivotal project to revitalize and expand the capabilities of the

Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant, a key water treatment facility in north Phoenix at Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley Drive. This project marks a significant step forward in sustainable water practices and community development and sets the stage for what may be a transformative chapter in Phoenix’s approach to innovative water management.

The Cave Creek facility, shuttered in 2009 due to an economic slowdown, is poised for a comeback that aligns with Phoenix’s strategic plan to diversify and secure its water resources. The council’s decision to approve the construction contract opens a pathway for the plant to one day employ advanced water purification technologies, offering a promising future.

“Phoenix takes seriously the need to secure our water future and continues to bring new solutions to the

table to do so,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego says.

“Reopening the Cave Creek Water Reclamation Plant with new water recycling capabilities will be crucial to shore up Phoenix’s water supply, support sustainable development, and maintain a strong quality of life for Phoenix families. Thanks to the city’s commitment to water stewardship and the deployment of innovative technologies, we will be able to deliver what is effectively a new water supply before the end of the decade.”

The plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. It will feature a low-profile design, indoor equipment, covered processes, odor control scrubbers, and a color scheme harmonizing with the natural desert environment. The capacity is set at 8 million gallons a day (MGD), expandable to 16 MGD. With advanced treatment technologies like Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Ultraviolet Advanced Oxidation Processes (UV AOP), the plant could one day produce 6.7 million gallons a day of potable water to serve approximately 25,000 households annually.

City News Join the Phoenix Police Foundation Honor Run/Walk to Salute Fallen Heroes

Photo courtesy of Phoenix Police Foundation

THE PHOENIX POLICE FOUNDATION IS CALLING ON THE COMMUNITY TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE CITY'S BRAVEST WHO HAVE PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE IN THE LINE OF DUTY. The 2024 Phoenix Police Foundation Honor Run/Walk is set to commemorate the lives and sacrifices of Phoenix Police Officers lost while serving the community. This unique event offers both in-person and virtual options for participants, providing a meaningful way to honor these heroes.

Scheduled for March 17, the in-person event will be a gathering of community members, law enforcement personnel, and supporters running or walking together in solidarity. For those unable to attend or who prefer a flexible option, the virtual run/walk allows participants to complete a 5K Run/Walk or 1.5 Mile Walk anytime from March 17 through March 23, at any location.

In a poignant tribute, participants are encouraged to visit Memorial Markers of fallen officers in their route.

These markers, located near the sites of the incidents, serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made. Participants can honor these officers by taking photos at the markers and sharing them on the event's website, where a map of the memorial locations is provided.

The registration fee is $45 plus tax, which includes an Honor Run shirt mailed to registrants. Registration for the event closes in early March, encouraging early sign-ups, but individuals are reminded that visiting a Memorial Marker to pay respects can be done at any time, fostering a year-round spirit of remembrance and honor to help spread awareness of the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

The Phoenix Police Foundation's annual Honor Run/ Walk is a statement of support and gratitude for those who have laid down their lives in the service of safety and protection. "Our annual Honor Run/Walk allows each of us the opportunity to show that, although we may not have known an officer personally, we believe in what he or she did, and to share that with our family,

We continue to nurture and provide a place where you can live in faith, live in community, and live with purpose. It’s no wonder why our residents call Fellowship Square home!

friends, and community," says a spokesperson for the foundation.

SPA RKLING CLOVERS

Get ready to channel the luck of the Irish with a dazzling science project perfect for kids aged 8 to 14! This experiment combines creativity, basic chemistry, and the festive spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

MATERIALS

• Borax (found in the laundry aisle; remember, it's natural but not safe to ingest or inhale, so handle with care)

• Boiling water

• A wide-mouth glass mason jar

• Green and white pipe cleaners

• String

• A pencil

• Food coloring (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Shape Your Shamrock:

Twist your pipe cleaners into a shamrock shape. You can find shamrock templates online for guidance.

2. Prepare Your Solution:

For each mason jar, mix three cups of boiling water with ½ cup of Borax. The more saturated your solution, the larger your crystals will grow. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved, and the solution is clear. Add a few drops of food coloring if you wish.

3. Suspend Your Shamrock:

Tie a string around the stem of your pipe cleaner shamrock, then tie the other end to a pencil. Gently lower the shamrock into the solution, ensuring it doesn't touch the sides or bottom of the jar. Place the jar in a spot where it won't be disturbed.

4. Wait for the Magic:

Let the jar sit undisturbed overnight. By morning, your pipe cleaner shamrock will be transformed into a sparkling, crystal-encrusted decoration.

5. Display Your Creation:

Carefully remove the shamrock from the solution, cut off the string, and display it in your window to catch the light.

EDUCATIONAL TWIST

This fun project is not only a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day but also offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the science behind crystal formation.

Real Estate Are Phoenix Home Prices Soaring?

Hello, North Phoenix homeowners! If you’ve been keeping tabs on the housing market, you’re probably well aware of the hot prices that homes in our area have been commanding lately. As a real estate agent that specializes in our area, I keep my finger on the pulse of our community. So, I want to shed some light on the factors that have been driving the surge in home values from Norterra to Anthem.

First things first, did you know that we’re currently facing a shortage of around 120,000 homes in the Valley? Yes, you read that right. It’s a staggering 6.5% of the existing inventory as of 2022. But why does this shortage matter, and how did we find ourselves in this situation in the first place?

Let’s break it down.

The shortage of homes is a major player behind the consistently high home prices in the Valley, which of course includes North Phoenix. Despite occasional periods of slower sales and higher interest rates, the demand for housing has remained strong, far outpacing the available supply.

So, how did we end up in this predicament?

Well, following the housing crash of 2008, home and apartment construction nearly ground to a halt. It wasn’t until around 2016 that construction began to pick up again, only to slow down in the subsequent years. By then, however, the Valley had already become a magnet for those seeking a new

place to call home. With nearly 300 people moving to Maricopa County, every single day, the demand for housing skyrocketed.

When construction finally started to gain momentum around 2019, the demand had already far surpassed the available supply, leading to a surge in home prices. Basically, we were playing catch-up from the get-go.

Now, here we are today, witnessing a boom in apartment construction. Despite efforts to address the supply issue in recent years, the shortage of homes has barely budged since 2020.

This shortage isn’t just a minor inconvenience—it directly impacts homebuyers and the overall real estate market. And as demand continues to surge and construction efforts ramp up, it’ll be fascinating to see how this dynamic plays out in the coming years.

But no need to worry, North Phoenix homeowners. While higher home prices may be here to stay, we’re still more affordable compared to major metropolitan areas like New York, LA, or San Francisco. Plus, with our burgeoning tech and healthcare sectors and a thriving cultural scene, the Valley has never been more enticing. And at the end of the day, higher home prices mean more equity in your pocket!

MOTOR VAULT: MORE THAN LUXURY GARAGE STORAGE, IT’S A COMMUNITY.

14 • March 2024 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS myhyperlocalnews.com

Last year, Vern Haugen opened his first revolutionary concept in luxury automotive storage known as Motor Vault. Haugen, a seasoned real estate developer and connoisseur of fine automobiles, built this based on a personal need after downsizing his home and encountering a predicament many Valley residents can relate to – a lack of garage space for his collection of vehicles.

As he searched for a solution, Haugen was intrigued by the existing toy garage concept but says, “I wanted a more social, country club-like atmosphere.” His requirements were well defined: Build in a convenient, centralized location. Offer customizable suites with various floor plans and sizes to accommodate even the tallest trailered boats and motorhomes.

Shield prized possessions from the unrelenting summer sun and heat of Arizona. Haugen says he wanted to do all of this while creating a sanctuary for fellow auto enthusiasts at the same time, “one that fosters a lifestyle and a sense of belonging.” That is exactly what he has done with his first location, Motor Vault – Fountain Hills, which opened in May 2023.

Haugen has set Motor Vault up as the premier development for luxury garage suite ownership and more.

Motor Vault member, Chip Beck, says it best: “This is like my treehouse when I was a young kid. It’s my space, my stuff, my rules. At home, there were rules, restrictions, expectations, and limits. But not at Motor Vault.

Throughout the years I’ve longed to escape to those carefree days up in my tree house where the only rules were mine. I wanted to recapture that feeling I thought I’d never have again. Until now.”

Haugen further explains “It’s even better than your childhood treehouse. Here, it’s like a whole bunch of tree forts gathered in one place. And it's more than a private sanctuary for owners and their autos,” he continues. “It's definitely a community. Everyone wants

friends – we want connection. People want to associate with likeminded individuals, and we have that here at Motor Vault.”

For the owners of these garages, Motor Vault symbolizes more than a practical storage option; it is a destination to unwind, socialize, and revel in the shared passion for automobiles. Haugen says, “Motor Vault is a place where memories are being made, friendships are forming, and it’s a unique sense of community that’s flourishing.”

Motor Vault provides the ideal space solution for all types of cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, jet skis, ATVs, and RVs. Ownership includes access to the common areas, a members-only club house, and monthly social events, including scenic drives for lunch, BBQs, game nights, parties, group trips, and much more.

“Some of us just got back from East Africa last week,” says Julie Skrei, Haugen’s fiancé and VP of sales and marketing for Motor Vault, who organized this journey after retiring from the luxury travel industry. “We get together with some of the owners for dinner regularly, too. Motor Vault is a lot of fun, even for the wives!”

Motor Vault has transcended its primary purpose of a storage facility and has evolved into a haven where passion and camaraderie thrive. Next to open, a location in Deer Valley which is easy to access from both the I-17 and 101 freeways.

This content is sponsored by Motor Vault.

INSIDE A HIGH-END HANGOUT

An array of standard features are included in every Motor Vault luxury garage suite, and available upgrades as well. Haugen claims “garage ownership at Motor Vault is a great investment opportunity also – they build equity. It’s kind of like a Rolex, you buy one and it is easy, while continually increasing in value. Always buy something you can un-buy, it’s a safe bet.”

Standard features include: a gated community; 24/7 owner access; video security cameras; luxurious clubhouse; climate-control capabilities; plumbing at all units; insulated walls, ceiling, and garage door; commercial electric garage door; 14’ tall garage door that is either 14’, 16’ or 18’ wide; pedestrian door; 20’ interior ceiling; 120volt receptacle; 50AMP RV charging outlet; LED lighting; 100AMP electrical service; individual electric meter; conduit for TV and internet; common restrooms; and quality-controlled CC&Rs.

Upgrades include items such as epoxy flooring, HVAC, and mezzanines. “Some guys buy the garages and make them into ‘man caves,’” says Haugen. “One owner added a golf simulator in his suite.” Numerous owners come to their garages several times a week to work or tinker with their toys. “I enjoy visiting with all of them. Many are retired, and they go down there to socialize.”

Motor Vault – Fountain Hills, which is sold out, hosts 31 luxury garages either 1,200 or 1,500 square feet. Motor Vault Deer Valley will open this fall with some availability of their 73 garage suites, ranging from 580 to 1,700 square feet. All garages are flexible in space – walls can be left out between units, creating a side-by-side or a double long pull-through option. Haugen says he would like to build a few more locations around the Valley. If you’re downsizing a home, have run out of garage space, or want to invest in a “treehouse,” call Motor Vault at 602-325-8444 or info@motor-vault.com for more information.

Arizona is home to more than 20,000 nonprofits, from small grassroots organizations to large charities, all dedicated to making the Grand Canyon State a better place to live. These organizations touch every aspect of life, providing essential services that range

from healthcare and education to environmental conservation and the arts. The economic footprint of these nonprofits is substantial, with an annual impact of $23.5 billion, accounting for nearly 8% of the state's gross product and making the sector the fifth largest non-government employer.

The urgency to support these vital organizations has never been greater. Arizona Gives Day is a lifeline for many nonprofits that rely on donations to sustain their operations and expand their reach. The initiative not only raises funds but also increases awareness about the critical role nonprofits play in our communities and the state at large.

The unique online platform provided by azgives.org facilitates a direct connection between donors and causes they care about. It's a place where stories of

hope and resilience are shared, where the community can learn about the diverse needs across Arizona, and where every donation, big or small, contributes to the greater good. The platform is accessible year-round, allowing for ongoing support through scheduled or recurring donations, but it's on Arizona Gives Day that the state comes together in a remarkable display of generosity.

The benefits of participating in Arizona Gives Day extend beyond the immediate financial boost to nonprofits. It's an investment in the future of Arizona, creating a stronger, more vibrant community for all. Donations not only support the delivery of critical services but also contribute to the state's economy, strengthening it from within.

As Arizona Gives Day 2024 approaches, the call to action is clear: let's unite to support the heart of our state—the nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to improve our lives. Whether you're a lifelong Arizonan or new to the state, your gift on April 2 will help ensure that these essential organizations can continue their important work.

Together, we can make a lasting impact and demonstrate the true power of collective giving. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help strengthen and sustain the dynamic tapestry of nonprofits that make Arizona a place we're proud to call home.

Let's show the world the generous spirit of Arizona on this day of giving.

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Benjamin McRae, or just Ben.

I’VE LIVED IN PHOENIX FOR 26 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the desert hikes and trail runs. The sun beats the rain I had in Oregon. The food, and the freedom and uniqueness in architectural design in this arid climate is something I also love.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… time for me and my physical and metal health, time for my family, and time for Benjamin Studio. My morning begins with a workout, which rotates between the weights at the gym, a 45-minute walk or a trail run. I love my morning coffee after my workout. I often get my kids off to school, a middle schooler and a high schooler. We have a 1-month-old daughter as well, so mornings nearly always include her and

her mom. I head into the office around 8 a.m., which is a small suite above Vita Coffee and Cave and Post near 7th Ave and McDowell. My day is typically planned out with design, production, internal team coordination, and client meetings. After work, I love to spend some quality time with my wife and family, which often includes us cooking a home cooked meal, and connecting about our day. To wind down, I will spend some time reading, and when we have time, watch some TV. With a 1-month-old, our routine includes getting her into her bedtime routine as well.

MY FAMILY IS… the center of my world. I have two boys, 13 and 16, from a previous marriage and a beautiful newborn with my amazing wife, Shauna. We love being together, playing a board game, watching a movie, going out to eat, and try to do a couple trips a year together.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… coffee. That is what first came to mind. One thing is so challenging. Family would be an obvious answer, but outside of family would be coffee, working out, and finding a creative outlet.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… I never get tired of watching the original “Star Wars” movies, or “Indiana Jones.” I love sci-fi, action, and a mix of fantasy.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a fisherman. Growing up in a small coastal town in Oregon, I initially

thought I wanted to be a commercial fisherman, or logger. Something to do with the outdoors and industries that employed a lot of people in my town at that time. That did evolve when I was 10 or 12. I began to love drawing, specifically homes. This led me to the desire to be an architect, even though I had no idea what an architect was at that age.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… I used to pick one of two songs, either Guns N Roses –“Sweet Child of Mine,” or Led Zeppelin – “How Many More Times.”

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my wife, Shauna. She is an amazing partner who challenges me to follow my dreams, always work on growth and being a better version of myself, and to be a better husband and father.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my kids. I love when my kids make me laugh.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… sleeping in just a little bit (I rarely do that) and going for a morning walk with my family to grab a coffee. Or going for a trail run and being in nature in some way. Also, enjoying an amazing dinner with my wife, laughs, and perhaps a Manhattan. Then, winding down with the family with a movie or a game.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Boys Team Charity. My boys, my wife, and I are part of a local volunteer organization that supports many local

nonprofits where we spend many hours volunteering. The other would be the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). My youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 3 years old. We have supported this organization for its research and support of Type 1 diabetics.

MY LIFE IS… full. It feels as if every minute of every day is scheduled. Even with this full schedule, I don’t feel overwhelmed, I feel fulfilled.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… one that I haven’t yet taken, which would be a trip to Italy.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… work hard to master your emotional intelligence, and do not personalize anything.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

“How To Have Sex”

Three British girls set out on a holiday, anticipating the best summer of their lives filled with new experiences and unforgettable adventures.

This was one of the most upsetting experiences I've had watching a movie in quite some time. Molly Manning Walker's debut captures the intensity of what should be fun and how quickly it becomes terrifying. The big parties feel isolating, and everything that is supposed to be enjoyable ends up turning sour. Mia McKenna-Bruce's performance encapsulates the feeling of uncertainty in what should be incredible moments, allowing you to feel the terror alongside her. An astonishing work, even though it is a tough one to experience.

“Out of Darkness”

A group of stone-age humans find themselves hunted by a terrifying force.

Simplicity is the best descriptor for “Out of Darkness,” a film that, ironically, is a meat-and-potatoes picture under an hour and a half. Throughout the film, it toys with audience expectations and violently pushes back against them. Desperation and fear drive characters towards their own destruction, yet the film is cleverly patient with its developments. Violence is administered in small doses, making its impact and the resulting hurt felt more acutely when it occurs. By the end, your heart is racing, begging for a moment to breathe.

"Lisa Frankenstein"

An outcast girl decides to create the man of her dreams, encountering some destruction along the way.

This film's reception will largely depend on the viewer's appreciation for its camp tone and style. "Lisa Frankenstein" possesses the elements of an over-the-top romantic comedy

yet fails to fully realize its potential. The direction and editing, for lack of a better term, feel lifeless, failing to align with the feverish tone and style it aims for, and rendering the film slower than intended. Additionally, its PG-13 rating constrains the film from achieving the level of zaniness it aspires to, leaving the cast to exert their utmost efforts to compensate. A disappointing venture, considering the talent and potential involved.

ON NETFLIX

"Orion and the Dark"

The embodiment of darkness assists a young boy in confronting his fears.

"Orion and the Dark" may not reach the heights of Charlie Kaufman’s most acclaimed works, including "Being John Malkovich," but it still demonstrates considerable thoughtfulness and emotional maturity, making it suitable for children. The film's appeal is

significantly bolstered by the likability of the voice cast and a well-balanced mix of humor and thematic depth. So compelling are these elements that viewers may find themselves wishing for more time with the characters beyond the film’s 90-minute duration. While the animation is commendably executed, there’s an inescapable sense that its potential is somewhat constrained by budgetary limitations. Overall, it presents a delightful treat, offering families a distinct alternative to the usual fare.
