Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power

L

eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies.

Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics.

It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large.

The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution.

Arizonans can certainly relate.

Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021.

“Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.”

The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain.

Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off.

Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for

Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources.

Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan.

California-based composer Joseph Julian Gonzales is an expert on Cantares Mexicanos, the oldest known compiled collection of Nahuatl songs and poetry, which he uses as inspiration for many of his compositions. “Misa Azteca” has been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Vatican.

This almost-40,000 square foot park will be the largest in Arizona. The day will be full of activities including a live DJ, BMX stunt team, competitions, food trucks, giveaways, and more. The ACC encourages families

to bring their skateboards, bikes, scooters, roller skates, etc. to try out the park for themselves. (Just nothing motorized.) There will be a celebratory fireworks show at 6:45 p.m.

“Attendees will get a cool opportunity to see the Superhero Stunt Team perform on our new skate park. This bicycle thrill trick show is a must-see for our families,” says ACC Special Events Manager Debbie Pulido.

This skate park expansion project was approved during

the Facilities Master Plan process in May 2017 and construction began in October 2021. The new design

by MayDall Construction and Pillar Design Studios incorporates various skill level areas for an all-wheel complex (skateboards, scooters, bikes, in-line skates, etc.).

This was done to accommodate the growing volume of riders in recent years.

Someburros North Phoenix will be the fifteenth location for the restaurant group.

Someburros plans to open locations in Peoria and Goodyear later this year as well; details on those locations are still in the works.

Local Artists Host an Art Show in Anthem

THE 2022 FLAIR (FINEST LOCAL ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE) ART SHOW WILL BE HELD THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY, MARCH 24-27.

The show is free and open to the public.

It is held in the Persimmon Clubhouse inside the Anthem Country Club, located at 2708 W. Anthem Club Drive.

The easiest access to the event is through the main gate nearest Gavilan Peak Parkway.

Hours for the event are noon-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 24; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26; and 10 a.m. -2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. myhyperlocalnews.com

There will be a reception on Friday, March 25 from 5-9 p.m. where locals can meet the artists. There will be a cash bar and complimentary charcuterie station on the patio during the reception.

The FLAIR Art Show features oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pen and ink, stained glass, prints and originals. Subjects include landscapes, wildlife, floral arrangements, portraits, and abstracts. All art works are for sale.

There is also a special section for small works, all selling for $100 or less.

Many works are available on greeting cards as well. Be sure to participate in the raffle of three themed gift baskets as well.

The FLAIR Art Show is comprised primarily of works created by local artists in a weekly painting group in Anthem. Each Monday afternoon from 1-4 p.m., the group of 12 to 20 artists meet in the Anthem Community Center to work on their artistic projects.

They note that they are not a class, but instead a group that offers advice, encouragement, critiques, ideas, and general friendship to others with similar interests. In addition to hosting the art show, they organize field trips to artists’ studios as well.

Fast Cars and Hot Coffee Anthem Cars and Coffee Monthly Event Invites North Phoenix Residents to Rev Their Engines

For fans of classic cars, trucks, jeeps, and motorcycles, one hot spot to check out is the Anthem Cars and Coffee show. The event is held the first Saturday of each month from 8-11 a.m., and is founded, managed, and operated by Anthem residents. It takes place right outside of Amped Coffee Company, located at 3434 W. Anthem Way, #102. This month’s event takes place on March 5, but if you missed it, no worries as the next is Saturday, April 2.

For North Phoenix residents looking for a chance to check out some cool rides, this is the place to do it. “It [the event] is for anyone that likes to see or show cars, or just be around people who are interested in cars,” says Brian Sheehan of Anthem Cars and Coffee. “Our event is for every car fan - everyone from garage fixeruppers to million-dollar super car owners.”

Anthem is a great spot for these once-a-month shows because there was a big need in the area. Car loving residents no longer need to drive further into Phoenix to show off and see other cars. Sheehan recognized that need in his area and decided to do something about it.

“I decided to start out with some basic postcards, then found a good location that allowed people to show their cars and check out others all while having a cup of coffee.”

Sheehan says the show offers people to showcase their own cars and see vehicles of all kinds. Everything from high-end super cars, regular favorites, and junk yard finds that have been brought back to life with a little sweat and a lot of determination.

There is no limit to the type of car that can be shown at the event. Basically, if there is a cool car story to tell, and you want to share it with others, this is the place for you. Sheehan is hopeful that the show will continue to grow over the next few months, bringing out North Phoenix residents to celebrate and spend time getting to know their neighbors and their community.

Super Bowl LVII Host Committee Launches Countdown to 2023 Game in the Valley

IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018.

Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show.

It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.”

The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only

starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude.

It’s an event that could greatly benefit the state’s economy. Gov. Doug Ducey offered a positive outlook not just on the prospect of hosting another successful Super Bowl, but on the state’s financial health as a whole.

While the macroeconomic boom grabs headlines, the benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is felt at even the smallest levels of local economies. The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events.

“Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona.

This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.”

Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars.

The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The 2015 game brought in 120,000 visitors

“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”

“The Business Connect program supports minority-owned businesses, womenowned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.”

The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape.

Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls.

With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft.

“When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.”

It takes a village to host a Super Bowl, and if the track record of this committee is any indication of what’s to come, Super Bowl LVII will be a well-oiled machine.

by Nick Kelley and Dustin Westby, two former coworkers who quit their day jobs to pursue their passion of craft brewery.

“We were wanting something more than what we were getting from our corporate jobs. We did well, we had a lot of successes, but we were never really fulfilled and one of the things that Nick and I always bonded over was beer,” Westby says.

Westby explains that he and Kelley have been brewing with each other for 10 years, but only established a plan to make it a business in 2019. After signing a lease for a North Phoenix facility in 2021, the duo wanted to get their building open as soon as possible, but they encountered some challenges along the way.

“We faced a lot of issues with the supply chain, and just getting products in, and getting the work done,” Westby says. “We persevered through a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and blood, sweat and beers, but we made it through.”

Westby and Kelley held their grand opening on February 11, with six taps on deck, including a Blonde Ale, a Cucumber Lime Gose Sour Ale, and a Dry-Hopped Amber.

“People drink beer in the good times, we drink beer in the bad times, we drink it to celebrate, we drink it to console,” Westby says. “Nick and I, we came together, and we wanted to find a place for the people, for the community, something that would bring people together in good times and bad.”

Westby says that their facility can accommodate over 100 guests, and they have a beer garden and a taproom where locals can meet, drink, and play games like shuffleboard and cornhole.

In the future, Westby and Kelley look to grow their business outside of brewing and selling beer, including offering guided tours of their brewery, in hopes of giving people a deeper understanding of the craft.

“We want to create a very personal experience for our customers that are coming in, rather than just walking into a bar to grab a drink,” Westby says. “We want it to be like you’re a part of the family.”

Midwestern University Dental Institute to Provide Free Services for Kids and Veterans

he Midwestern University Dental Institute, located at 5855 W. Utopia Road in Glendale, will host two events in April that will provide free dental care and consultations to Valley children and military veterans who are unable to afford care. Treatments for both events are by appointment only, and community members are encouraged to make appointments as soon as possible to ensure treatment.

On Friday, April 1 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., the Dental Institute will host the Veterans’ Dental Day. Faculty and students from the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona will provide free screenings and treatments including dental examinations, routine cleanings, sealants, fillings, extractions, consultations about dental implants or dentures, and additional recommendations to military veterans. Proof of military service (DD214, Arizona military veteran driver license, and/or discharge documentation) is required for treatment.

I’VE LIVED IN FIRESIDE AT NORTERRA FOR NEARLY THREE YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… Our street is the absolute best. We have impromptu weeknight get-togethers with our neighbors who have turned into a family while our kids play outside. Moving from Ann Arbor, Michigan, we never had such a strong community feeling and it’s been so nice to rely on it the last few years. Since the neighborhood is adjacent to the Sonoran Preserve, it feels like we are away from living in the middle of a large city but thankfully still close enough to everything that we need in Norterra. My parents moved to the West Valley in 2005. If you would’ve told me then that I would be living north of the 101 someday, I wouldn’t have believed you. Now, there’s nowhere else that I want to be.

am not a financial advisor – but I do know how to spot trends, and I’d like to think I’m wise enough to follow them. The people at Gallup have been studying long-term investment trends over the past decade, and the results have been interesting: 41% of Americans view real estate as the best long-term investment.

As for the reasons Americans are choosing real estate, some are obvious. The huge jump in home prices demonstrates how quickly a real estate investment can grow (Phoenix home prices grew more than 30% last year). Of all the investment options listed above, real estate is the only investment you can live in. Profitable as they may be, you can’t live inside bars of gold, barrels of oil, or pork belly futures. Plus, with real estate you can make money from your investment before it’s paid in full. That’s the benefit of having a mortgage—although you’ve only partially paid for your home, you can make profits from the entire home’s value. Suppose you had $100,000 to invest, and you were deciding between a savings

100-YARD FREESTYLE GIRLS STATE CHAMPION For the second year in a row, Sandra Day O’Connor (SDOHS) sophomore Caelle Armijo won the Division I, 100-Yard Freestyle State Championship.

Last year, Caelle was the first freshman in a decade to win a Division I state championship title in swimming, and this year she didn’t disappoint, earning the State Championship title in the 100-Yard Freestyle event with a time of 50.64 seconds. Caelle also tied for third

place in the 50-yard Freestyle. She recently competed at the national level in the Junior National competition in Austin, Texas in the 50-, 100-, and 200-Yard Freestyle events. Caelle started swimming when she was 11. Her swim coach and team at SDOHS look forward to seeing her compete for them in the years to come.

team’s championship game found them in a rematch of their season-opening five-set thriller back in August against Hamilton. SDOHS won that night — each of the four sets went at least 45 points. The rematch at the championship game, however, went the other way and SDOHS had to settle for State Runner-Up. The team went undefeated in the regular season. They were very balanced this season in terms of strength in all positions, according to SDOHS. “Throughout their season, the team earned a reputation for spirited comebacks. In the state semifinals against Tempe’s Corona del Sol, they fought back from losing the first two sets to keep their season alive,” according to SDOHS. “Next season will bring younger players into new roles and new faces on the team. It was a great first season for a new coaching staff, and they are excited with what they accomplished.”

DVUSD’s Elementary #32 has a New Name, Mascot and School Colors

T

he Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) Governing Board has approved the name “Inspiration Mountain School” with the mascot of a Knight and colors of Royal Blue and Black for the Elementary #32 school currently under construction at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

This recommendation comes following an initial survey that was open to the DVUSD community from December 15, 2021 to January 5, 2022 to collect ideas for its name, mascot, and colors.

All suggestions from this survey were carefully reviewed during a school naming community meeting, which was attended by future Inspiration Mountain School students, families, community members, and potential staff members.

The group gave input on the suggestions and narrowed the list of ideas.

The community then had the opportunity to select their favorite options in a final voting survey. DVUSD received more than 800 votes from future students, families, staff, and 18 • March 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

community members. The DVUSD Governing Board approved the name, mascot, and colors at a recent meeting.

Dr. JoAnn Schwarting was named as the principal for Inspiration Mountain School. After serving four years in the United States Navy, Dr. Schwarting earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University (ASU), a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Supervision from Northern Arizona University, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership and Innovation from ASU. The current DVUSD Principal of the Year, Dr. Schwarting has served the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2005. She taught seventh grade English language arts at Desert Mountain School for seven years. She then transferred to Desert Sky Middle School where she assumed the roles of instructional coach and assistant principal. Most recently, Dr. Schwarting spent the last six years leading Desert Mountain School as principal.

Youth Making a House a Home: Local High School Students Give Back S tudents from West-MEC’s General Construction Technology program in Deer Valley are helping to renovate a veteran’s widow’s home in Glendale

as part of their work-based learning and community service.

LaGean Levar is the wife of Thomas

Phillip Levar, a Navy veteran who passed away nearly a year ago. Levar’s house was in disrepair and needed immediate attention. The city of Glendale contacted Glendale police officer Sgt. Jeff Turney due to his previous service to veterans to brainstorm ways to help. “The house was going to be condemned due to its condition and I contacted Angels on Patrol and Operation Enduring Gratitude. They stepped in to help Ms. Levar and renovate the house,” Sgt. Turney says.

Operation Enduring Gratitude, a nonprofit started by West-MEC’s General Construction Technology instructor and veteran Charlie Ellis, serves veterans and families in need.

The nonprofit undertook renovations to make Levar’s house a home again.

To help, students from West-MEC’s construction class went to the site and put the skills they learned in their

program to good use. They filled in cracks, replaced windows, performed repairs on cracked masonry joints, and more. Avanti Windows and AZ Masonry Council guided students in the process.

Ximena Navarro, a student of the program, says, “It feels great to use the skills that I’ve learned in class while also giving back to the community.”

“The class is here to make a tangible difference while seeing real-life application of techniques learned in the lab,” Ellis says.

“They will be coming back a few more times to help in the restoration process.”

“I’d like to thank the students, Operation Enduring Gratitude, and others who have helped in the restoration process,” Levar says.

The full restoration is anticipated to be completed this spring.

City of Phoenix Seeking to Hire Hundreds of Lifeguards A Certification Course is Required to Apply

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking to hire hundreds of lifeguards ahead of the 2022 pool season. Currently, Phoenix needs to hire more than 400 lifeguards to safely open the city’s 29 public pools for this summer.

“If we cannot hire the number of lifeguards we need, we cannot open all 29 pools and that means less people will have access to a pool where they can cool off and less children will learn to swim,” says Phoenix Aquatics Director Becky Hulett. “Being a lifeguard is the best summer job. You’re taught valuable life skills and meet friends that will last a lifetime.”

According to the City of Phoenix, some benefits of being a lifeguard include: • $14.02 an hour.

TAKE THE TRIP FAMILY TRAVEL HACKS JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING BREAK

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee.

Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road.

USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide.

The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring.

GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied

ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free.

CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. For example, the first hour we listen to different genres of music, then they watch a DVD, the next hour is quiet time, coloring time, etc. I also love conversation starter cards for families. Check out Table Topics; they give families ideas/topics to discuss.

DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past.

PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love

writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills.

BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle.

I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids.

GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips.

REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free.

OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but

I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!).

PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on.

It’s important to instill in your kids a love for travel, exploration, and adventure— memories over monetary for the win.

IN THEATERS

“Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.”

“Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic 24 • March 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.

“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”

has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.
