he Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) marks the 18th anniversary of the Giving Closet, a district-wide resource providing formal attire to students in need, with the story tracing back to the efforts of Ann Elizabeth Ordway before she joined the DVUSD Board.
The Giving Closet evolved from a garage operation to a designated space in Barry Goldwater High School (BGHS), eventually expanding to occupy a large area on the school’s mezzanine. The desire to transform the Giving Closet into a personalized shopping experience, complete with dressing rooms and an array of clothing options, was brought to fruition through collaboration with BGHS staff and the support of local construction firms Toll Brothers and Young Brothers, facilitated by Phoenix Police Resource Officer Valarie Rhodes.

MONTESSORI ROOM
Scouting May be a Solution to Improving the Mental Health Crisis Kids are Experiencing Today By Andy Price, CEO of the Grand Canyon Council, BSA Photos courtesy of Grand Canyon Council
New Year’s resolutions
- Laugh daily with family. - Read and grow. - Schedule a Montessori Room tour. - Enroll my child at Montessori Room.
P
utting down your phone and picking up a backpack may help with the mental health crisis many youth are facing today.
According to the CDC, children and teens now spend an average of eight to nine hours in front of a screen daily, which can cause sensory overload and increase the risk of attention deficit disorders, anxiety, and depression. Too much screen time and limited experiences outdoors disproportionately affect children causing long-term developmental consequences. The local Grand Canyon Council Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) programs encourage boys and girls to socialize, learn new skills, gain confidence, and participate in outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, and canoeing. Scouting provides access to outdoor programs and activities designed with children and their families in mind who want to incorporate more outdoor exercise, have access to character development, all the while forming lasting bonds with their peers.
While Scouting is focused on teaching young people how to be prepared for life, it goes beyond helping the individual – parents and other family members may also benefit from Scouting by getting more quality time with their children.
New Year, New Beginnings in Learning Explore our nurturing environment. Book your visit now! www.montessoriroom.com
Scouting provides a safe environment to learn and make friends, not just for the kids, but for parents, too. As a parent, active involvement in your Scout’s troop helps foster a sense of community, helps build a network of support, and even helps enhance parenting skills. Community and the feeling of belonging are critical for everyone’s mental health, but especially today’s youth. Having a strong sense of social connection and spending time with people you love boosts self-esteem, promotes adaptability, and resilience, and is associated with improved overall quality of life. And spending time in nature has been proven to help focus, lower stress, boost your mood, and improve relationships. So, we encourage you to put down that phone, lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails! To learn more about getting involved in Scouting, visit scoutingaz.com.

Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography

his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.
MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE
1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes. • With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.
2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently. 3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water. • Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.
4. Observing the Colors Separate • As the water travels up the paper, it will carry the ink from the markers with it. 6. n North Phoenix, a unique business thrives—not just on its commercial success but on a commitment to community welfare and environmental stewardship. North Valley Junk Removal, steered by Dustin Holm and his family, is more than a conventional trash removal service.
North Valley Junk Removal is more than a trash removal service.
Founded in 2016 by Holm, a dedicated Valley resident since 2012, the company has blossomed into a vital community service. "As a business, we recognize the importance of giving back to the community that sustains us," says Holm. This ethos permeates every facet of their operation, from their participation in local charities to launching ambitious environmental initiatives. Holm's vision is simple yet profound: "At North Valley Junk Removal, we aim to do more than the minimum. We strive to leave places better than we found them, nurturing a culture of care and responsibility among our team." This philosophy has led to their most notable endeavor, the Don’t Dump in Our Desert initiative. Launched under Holm's guidance, this volunteerdriven campaign focuses on cleaning desert areas around North Phoenix, which suffer from illegal dumping. To date, this initiative has successfully cleared over 150,000 pounds of litter and more than 1,000 tires.
Elizabeth and Dustin Holm
Illegal dumping, a significant blight in the area, has various culprits, including other junk removal businesses, contractors, homeowners, and even abandoned homeless camps. Holm's program, initiated in 2020 out of his love for the outdoors and dismay at the rampant trash, has become a community rallying point, attracting up to 60 volunteers per event. For his significant efforts, Holm was honored in 2021 with the Community Impact Award by the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by Rep. Debbie Lesko. However, his dedication extends beyond desert cleanups. North Valley Junk Removal is also involved in Adopt-a-Road efforts, recently clearing 18 bags of trash along four miles of roadside and contributes to the Foothills Food Bank by offering discounts to customers who donate nonperishable goods. The company’s services range widely, dealing with everything from regular garbage to large, unwanted items like pianos, hot tubs, sheds, pool fencing, and more. Holm, his wife Elizabeth, and their 24-year-old son Nathan prioritize recycling and donating usable items to local thrift stores and organizations. They are particularly careful with special items, such as ensuring the proper retirement of American flags through local Boy Scouts organizations.
Under Holm's guidance, the Don't Dump in Our Desert initiative has successfully cleared over 150,000 pounds of litter and more than 1,000 tires during their desert cleanups. North Valley Junk Removal serves the North Valley and beyond.
North Valley Junk Removal is more than environmental and charitable efforts; it stands out for its professionalism and efficiency. With over 19 years of experience in furniture, logistics, moving, and construction, Holm and his team have built a reputation for reliable, high-quality service, evident in customer testimonials that frequently praise their punctuality, thoroughness, and attention to detail. As for the future, Holm's vision for his company is clear: to continue serving the community through their core services and their extensive charity work. "We firmly believe that to truly be a part of the community, we must contribute to its wellbeing," says Holm. Those interested in junk removal services or wishing to support their charitable efforts can reach North Valley Junk Removal at 623-469-5623 or visit their website at northvalleyjunkremoval. com. Posh Pup Palaces: 10th Annual Design for Dogs Event Aids Arizona’s Homeless Animals This year’s event is a special one, bringing together 10 “All Star” teams that have participated in previous Design for Dogs events. They are set to design, build, and donate luxurious doghouses, which will be auctioned off during the event. The highlight of the evening will be the “Best in Show” competition, where these pet palaces will be judged for their creativity and functionality.

T
he Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) teams up with local architects, interior designers, and home builders for the 10th annual Design for Dogs event on Friday, Feb. 23. This unique fundraiser will feature swanky, custom-built doghouses to support AAWL’s mission in rescuing and caring for homeless pets.
The money raised through this event is crucial for AAWL, Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, which supports over 4,000 homeless pets annually. The proceeds will directly fund life-saving programs, including low-cost vaccine clinics, rural rescue efforts, and a community vet clinic. The event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., will offer more than just an auction. Attendees can enjoy music, raffle prizes, and the chance to meet adorable, adoptable dogs from AAWL. Each ticket holder will receive a ticket redeemable for two drinks, provided by local vendors. Founded in 1971 by a group of animal lovers, including Amanda Blake of “Gunsmoke” fame, AAWL has evolved
from a small-scale operation into a full-service animal welfare organization. Over the past 50 years, AAWL has been a leader in innovative behavior training, medical care, adoption, and community outreach programs, especially focusing on rescuing animals from rural shelters in Arizona. Held at the Facings of America Showroom, located at 16421 N. 90th St., in Scottsdale, tickets for this caninecentric architectural showcase are priced at $55 for general admission and can be purchased at designfordogs. org. Our sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and education of pig ownership in Arizona. Our amazing volunteers and I ensure they have plenty of food, poop picked up, shelters cleaned, and medical needs assessed. MY FAMILY IS… the amazing rescue pigs that call Better Piggies home. We have small and large pigs, plus three rescue cows. Additionally, I’m happy to call our volunteers a part of the family because they love and care for the rescues like their own. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… plenty of piggy treats like fruits and veggies, Oreos, and Cheerios. We work with the local food bank and various donors to provide the best possible meals and treats to the pigs. HI, MY NAME IS… Danielle Betterman, director of Better Piggies Rescue. I’VE LIVED IN THE VALLEY FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE (I’M AN ARIZONA NATIVE) AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the weather is perfect, even when it’s hot. We have the best wildlife, and our sunsets are amazing!
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Babe.” It’s a crowd favorite around here. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an animal rescuer, just like my father. Based on his teachings, I was able to fulfill that dream.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. I hope that everyone is seeing a theme here.
with the rescue or their extended care. This isn’t a life for everyone but I’m happy to share it in any capacity people request.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my amazing friend and loyal volunteer Beth. She is kind and loving but also helps with feeding and numerous pig rescues. I would be nowhere without my friends/volunteers. They are the best extended family I and the piggies could ask for.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my first ever pig, Beezers. He was a Christmas gift 12 years ago, he is the reason for the rescue, and he is my best friend and the love of my life.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… anything the pigs are doing which goes right on our TikTok page (@betterpiggies). We want everyone to see how amazingly nerdy these pigs are and how much smarter they are than other animals.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… vacation? What is a vacation? You can’t go on vacation with 175-plus pigs that you have to take care of daily. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Whenever you feel sad or lonely and need a friend, just cuddle up to a rescue pig. You will have a friend and cuddle buddy for life.”
THE PERFECT DAY IS… sitting at the sanctuary, hanging with the pigs, knowing they are happy, healthy, and free from harm. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Better Piggies Rescue and to find out more about tours or volunteering, please visit our website at betterpiggiesrescue. org MY LIFE IS… hard but rewarding. You meet the worst people when rescuing an animal but also the best that help

Buckle Up for a Sizzling 2024 in North Phoenix Real Estate! By Shelley Sakala
H
appy New Year North Phoenix neighbors! In my former life, I used to predict the weather at ABC 15 here in Phoenix. It’s a lot of “hot and sunny” but we do have the monsoon season, which is definitely trickier to predict. Predicting where storms may hit is much like predicting what will happen in the real estate market – not an exact science, but a thrilling journey through historical data and trends. So, grab your crystal ball, or in my case, a cup of coffee, and let’s delve into my predictions for the North Phoenix real estate market in 2024! Picture this: the Federal Reserve might just be the puppet master in our real estate play this year, pulling strings with potential rate cuts. Word on the street is, we might witness up to six rate cuts in 2024. Brace yourselves because if that happens, we’re in for a real estate rollercoaster! Lower interest rates usually mean more bang for your buck, making homes more affordable for buyers. And, let me tell you, historically, that’s been the recipe for a market on fire. I’ve got my money on the North Phoenix real estate market cranking up the heat, especially as we round the corner of the second quarter. With interest rates playing nice, buyers are likely to flood the market, eager to seize the opportunity of enhanced affordability. So, whether you’re donning the buyer’s hat or the seller’s cape, keep those eyes peeled on market dynamics as mid-2024 approaches – you might just catch a glimpse of your dream deal!
myhyperlocalnews.com
Now, let’s switch gears and talk about the unsung hero of our real estate saga – housing inventory. Phoenix has been doing a tightrope dance with a shortage of available homes, and it looks like that trend is here to stay in 2024. Low inventory usually means a battleground for buyers, with multiple offers and bidding wars becoming the norm. Sellers, rejoice – this could be your time to shine like a shooting star in the real estate galaxy! To sum it all up, my 2024 North Phoenix real estate predictions hinge on the Federal Reserve’s potential rate cuts and the ongoing saga of low housing inventory. If the stars align with those six rate cuts and inventory remains snug, we could
be witnessing a market ablaze with skyrocketing sales, multiple offers, and perhaps a few epic bidding wars. But hey, real estate is a wild ride, and these predictions are like riding a storm – based on the current economic outlook. Here’s to happy house hunting and a downright fantastic 2024 in the Phoenix real estate market – may your deals be sweet, and your homes be ever so dreamy! Cheers!

words. Mann's skill as a filmmaker remains undiminished during his hiatus.
“Mayhem” In Thailand, an ex-gang member finds himself forced to return to that world after a family member is kidnapped.
“The Zone of Interest” The Höss family works towards their ideal life in the presence of Auschwitz. Jonathan Glazer's new movie presents a unique form of horror: watching a family lead a seemingly normal life overshadowed by an unspeakable evil. The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly
Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat"). The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire. The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. However, it is Penelope Cruz who astonishes with her portrayal of quiet heartbreak, delivered with minimal 22 • February 2024 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS
remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away. “The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him. "The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.
It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact. Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element. It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth. This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing. Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.
