Build Back Better Is Dead, But Your Chance to Secure Energy Independence Is Not

“A
ll politics are local,” as a time-tested American saying goes. When considering climate change, the most urgent political issue of our time, we might instinctively balk at this old sawhorse. What, after all, could be less local a concern than the challenges posed by global warming? Yet a closer look reveals that regular people always have the power to effect major change if they are determined to do so, especially if they have the support of their community. All eyes were on the new administration over the past year as it tried to marshal support for its Build Back Better package of public investments—and for good reason. Among other provisions, the bill would have significantly enhanced incentives for green-energy investments, encouraging businesses and individuals to make the kinds of changes needed for the country to fulfill its carbon-reduction commitments. The plan stalled just before this past Christmas in the face of resistance from two Democratic senators. In explaining his refusal to back the bill, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin paid lip service to political ideals, but his considerable vested interest in the dying coal industry is hard to ignore. Kyrsten Sinema, one of our very own senators, remained enigmatic and noncommittal to the end, a puzzling stance toward a rare opportunity to harness her state’s most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But no matter what powerful politicians are doing (or, more to the point, not doing) on the national stage to counteract climate change, there is always something regular people can do. More than 200,000 homeowners in Arizona have already installed solar systems, which produce enough electrical output to power almost a million homes, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association, and Arizonans are only getting started. You can secure dependable, affordable energy for yourself and your family while contributing to clean-energy self-sufficiency for America. Miss America Crowns Its First Miss Anthem Nicole Rowe gives back to her community By Ava Hiniker ANTHEM LOCAL NICOLE ROWE MADE MISS AMERICA HISTORY THIS PAST WINTER WHEN SHE WAS CROWNED THE FIRST OFFICIAL MISS ANTHEM. This title, along with the title of Miss Cave Creek, was added to the Miss America organization last year to offer ladies in the North Valley the opportunity to represent their local communities. Being raised in Anthem, Rowe knew that her understanding of local history and her willingness to work for what she believed in would grant her a chance to earn the new title. “I was super excited about becoming Miss Anthem because I felt like there would be so many opportunities for partnerships out here,” Rowe says. “Especially since I have been a part of the Anthem community for the past 15 years, it means a lot that I can continue to be involved and be the representative I believe they deserve.” This pageant was hardly Rowe’s first, as she entered the Miss America scene right after starting college at the age of 18. She has held multiple titles and performed community service across the Valley and globe. Juggling college, her personal life, and a grueling competition was not easy, but with steadfast determination and a desire to improve her community, Rowe set off on a voyage that left her friends and family immensely proud. “From our perspective, this journey has shown us how much Nicole has matured and changed since she first competed,” says Rowe’s mother, Teresa. “Now, she’s at the other end of it and she is in the working world, with all the experience and maturity that gives you. It’s great to see her grow into such an accomplished and amazing young woman.”

Rowe has completed service work in South America, Nepal, India, Africa, and Romania in addition to her partnerships with many local charities. However, through her travels and experiences with all kinds of organizations, Rowe quickly realized that she craved more than what many charity operations were offering. As a result, she crafted her Miss Anthem platform around helping people find new ways to participate in charitable giving. Rowe’s platform, officially titled “Charity the Responsible Way,” is focused on supporting charity operations capable of real, positive change in their communities. She understands that with so many options out there, it can be difficult for those interested in community service to find the right fit. Through actively working to share valuable information on sustainable ways to serve, Rowe strives to spread progress and improvement throughout the Valley.

“I believe everyone has good intentions when wanting to support, but sometimes there are people that don’t know how to do it in a healthy way,” Rowe says. “So, the biggest goal through my social impact is to be a resource in everyday life for people that want to volunteer in positive, sustainable, and regenerative ways.” With this new title under her belt, Rowe is now devoting her attention to the upcoming Miss Arizona competition in June as well as her full-time career in social media marketing. Equipped with the passion for sparking change and the pride she carries in her community, she hopes to leave a lasting positive impression as she embarks down the road to Miss America. Crews Complete All Major Work on Loop 101 Widening Project

BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE LAST SCHEDULED FULL WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR LANE-MARKING WORK, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT).
ADOT’s $185 million project, which started in January 2019, has added a fourth regular (general purpose) lane in each direction along 13 miles of Loop 101. Drivers have already been experiencing improved traffic flow along the wider freeway for several months while crews focused attention on other necessary work such as interchange enhancements, the addition of permanent, easier-to-see lane stripes, and the sealing of concrete deck joints. Other improvements added during the Loop 101 project include: • Wider bridges above cross streets, the Central Arizona Project canal and area washes. • A new Loop 101 overpass above the city of Scottsdale’s planned Miller Road extension. • New freeway lighting and signs.
• Noise barriers in areas where they are warranted. • New landscaping in several areas. • On- and off-ramps at interchanges reconstructed to fit the profile of the wider freeway. As with other freeway construction projects, crews will oversee a required landscape establishment period and take care of any other minor work. Drivers are asked to continue to stay alert for workers or equipment in the area. The Loop 101 Improvement Project has been funded as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
Phoenix City Council Approves Water Conservation Plan Information and Photo Courtesy of the City of Phoenix RECENTLY, THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO ALLOW THE CITY TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE CENTRAL ARIZONA WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT IN RESPONSE TO CONTINUING DECLINES IN WATER SUPPLIES IN LAKE MEAD ON THE COLORADO RIVER. The agreement, known as the 500+ Plan, involves the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and stakeholders in Arizona, California, and Nevada. The goal is to add 500,000 acrefeet of additional water to Lake Mead each year through 2026. The plan is projected to add approximately 16 feet of water to the reservoir, which continues to reach record low levels. Those targets will require agreement participants to do without certain amounts of their Colorado River allotments. In exchange for a reduction in water delivery, the parties will receive financial compensation. “The City of Phoenix recognizes the seriousness of a declining Colorado River, and this action is representative myhyperlocalnews.com
of the collaborative regional efforts that are necessary to address the challenge of water scarcity and drought,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a desert community that prioritizes sustainable growth, and the funds saved through this plan will contribute to identifying, innovating and piloting solutions to increase water use efficiency and promote conservation.” Phoenix will receive compensation in the amount of $4,163,765.97 for a contribution in 2022 of 15,977 acrefeet. The money will come from Central Arizona Water Conservation District and will be used to implement water conservation programs. The city will consider additional contributions in subsequent years on a caseby-case basis. “This short-term action is important because it represents quick thinking and collaboration among water users in the Southwest,” says Phoenix District 1 Councilwoman Ann O’Brien, who also is a member of the Board of Directors for Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA). “Ultimately, the answer is a long-term adaptation to a hotter, drier future, which must include more efficient use of water.” NORTH PHOENIX NEWS • February 2022 • 7

The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits’ Senior Vice President and Director of Development Jennifer Purcell shares that new features rolled out in the past year include peer-to-peer fundraising, an earlygiving leaderboard, and a collective listing of events and volunteer opportunities for viewing in one place. “These features were created to encourage year-round use of the website and assist with connecting the community with
nonprofit organizations of interest,” Purcell says. “This year, returning participants can take advantage of special QR codes, donate buttons to imbed on a website, and an auto-generated repeating donation feature to encourage previous donors to give again.” Arizona Gives unites nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. Arizona Gives helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously to create a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit, an IRS Determination Letter, the most current completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s operating budget, and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations. Arizona Gives provides virtual workshops to assist in making each participant’s fundraising experience a success. Workshops take place through March. Registrants can participate in real time or view the recording later. “Arizona Gives offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for year-round giving and for donors to create personal
fundraiser campaigns,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. For interested donors, AzGives.org offers an advanced search filter to find nonprofits by specific criteria, area of focus, and which donations may qualify as an Arizona tax credit. In addition to creating a fundraiser page, donors also can create a donor account to set up recurring donations, track their giving throughout the year, or they may simply check out as a guest. Play Ball? Spring Training Up in the Air Due to MLB lockout The latest info from the Cactus League By Jeremiah Sosa Photos Courtesy of the Cactus League FOR THE PAST 75 YEARS, MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL’S CACTUS LEAGUE HAS BEEN A MAINSTAY IN ARIZONA. Fans from all over the country travel thousands of miles to the Arizona desert to watch their favorite teams take the diamond. The Cactus League is a nonprofit association whose goal is to facilitate, encourage and participate in activities that promote
the 15 MLB teams and 10 stadiums who participate in Spring Training in Arizona. However, the past few years have looked anything but ordinary. In 2020, the Cactus League ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, only a fraction of the fans were allowed into the stadiums across the Valley due to the ongoing pandemic. Now, in 2022, the Cactus League once again faces another setback (in addition to the ongoing pandemic): an MLB lockout. On December 2, 2021, MLB unanimously voted to put the league in a lockout, after the previous collective
bargaining agreement expired. The owners and players have yet to come to terms on a new deal, meaning all MLB activities will cease to take place until an agreement is reached. For Arizona baseball fans, and baseball fans all over the country, this means that the commencement of the 75th Cactus League Spring Training is in question. “We are keeping a close eye on news regarding the negotiations between the owners and the players on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement,” Cactus League Executive Director Bridget Binsbacher says. “While we don’t want to speculate on the outcome, we are concerned about the possibility
of a work stoppage impacting Spring Training this year.” Although there is uncertainty from the players and teams whether there will be a Spring Training this year, the Cactus League remains ready to host teams, players, and fans. “The Cactus League’s eight host municipalities and the tribal community will be ready to work together to ensure a safe, secure and enjoyable Spring Training experience for all involved,” Binsbacher says. They recently celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. Their story is one of love, devotion, hard work, and dedication. James and Marge grew up a small town in Northern Kansas with a population of 300. They met in grade school; James was in the third grade and Marge was in the fourth. They started dating in high school and got engaged at 17. James was being shipped overseas to Okinawa so they decided to get married in the short leave he had before heading off. Once married, Marge stayed with her family back in Kansas. After he returned, life took them in many parts of the country; first in Nebraska, then off to Oregon, and finally Arizona. James worked as an engineer and Marge earned her degree from NAU at 41 and taught school for 22 years until retirement. James retired from the State of Arizona working as an engineer. One of the funny stories they shared in their travels 12 • February 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS
was running out of money when the were moving to Oregon so they stayed in Idaho for a week and worked for a potato farmer picking up potatoes that had fallen off the truck. They agree that they “definitely earned their money” that week and Marge says that her back never hurt so much. The Duvalls have three kids (Denise, Kim and James), three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Denise lives in Phoenix, Kim lives in Oregon, and James (Jim) lives in Flagstaff. James and Marge say the key to their happiness and longevity is a few points. “My buddies would want me to go have a beer after work, and I said, ‘I can go home and have a beer with my wife,’” James recalls. “We both got our pilots license together, we hunted and fished together, rode motorcycles, we tried it all, even went shooting together, and Marge is a better shot than me.” The other key to their success in marriage was financial. They never bought things without having the money for it. The saved for all their purchases and James even worked on planes to be able to buy three of them for
them to fly. Investing also helped them; they would use money earned to make property investments that then turned into profit along the way. Now both residents at The Retreat at Alameda, they share that they are grateful for their wonderful life together and have no regrets. myhyperlocalnews.com

BUILT FOR FUN Local family opens Bricks & Minifigs, a store for all things LEGO

EGO is a family affair for the Blaz family. Longtime fans of the construction toys, Allen and Kat Blaz decided to turn their family’s LEGO hobby into a North Phoenix business, Bricks & Minifigs.
Founded in 2009, Bricks & Minifigs is a buy, sell, trade model exclusively devoted to all things LEGO, including bulk bricks and other accessories. The minifigs in the name refers to the collectible, poseable mini-figure characters that come in sets or as individual pieces.
“Out of the blue, Allen came to me last February and broached the idea of opening up a North Phoenix Bricks & Minifigs.” says Kat. “I’ve always liked the idea of owning a business. As a horse trainer previously, being my own boss and working for everything I make appeals to me. So I said, ‘Let’s do it.”

kid-friendly store in a community she adores. “North Phoenix is really growing. There aren’t a lot of kid-type stores around here, yet there are a ton of families living here,” she says. Another thing she liked about the idea: the LEGO industry is thriving, despite the pandemic. “LEGO became something more important for families to do together and to get kids off their iPads. I also like that it’s been a toy that’s been around for decades and has really stood the test of time.” Allen, in business intelligence for Zelle, the peer-to-peer payment app, had been doing research on the concept for months prior to speaking with Kat. As soon as she gave the okay, he secured financing to get the ball rolling. Bringing the store to fruition proved more of a challenge. “In our area, it’s such a new development that there aren’t many existing retail spaces that become available and, if one pops up, it’s quickly leased. So, we had no other choice than to invest in a new build,” says Kat. The original plan was to open the store in August of last year, but between the city being short staffed, the cost of the build doubling in three months, and supply chain issues, the project was delayed. The extra time gave the couple time to thoughtfully plan out the store as well as build up their inventory. “The biggest thing with Bricks & Minifigs is that it’s your one-stop shop for everything LEGO. There are no other stores around where you can find LEGO new in a box, you can find used sets, you can find minifigs by themselves, or you can buy pieces from our bulk area if
you have a set and you’re missing a few pieces to complete it. We also have an area where you can build your own minifigs, which is really popular,” she says. “We also buy and trade your old LEGO. If you have an old set that you want to get rid of, bring in the set, and we’ll give you cash in hand or trade-in value so that you can walk out with a new-to-you set.” What’s truly unique about each Bricks & Minifigs store is the variety between locations. “All the used sets are what we’ve gotten from our community, so each store has different cool show pieces. We call them relics,” says Kat. The North Phoenix store’s relic is a custom Iron Man Hall of Armor, which has every single Iron Man marked minifig. Its value is close to $3,000. While that seems like a hefty price tag for a kid’s toy, Allen points out that LEGO isn’t just for youth. “There are popular groups called AFOL (Adult Fans of Lego) and LUG (Lego User Groups) that have tremendous followings. There’s even a show called ‘LEGO Masters,’ where LEGO enthusiasts of all ages participate in a series of competitions that begin with a single LEGO brick and concludes with inspiring, complex construction.” On Sundays, when normally closed, the store can be reserved for birthdays or private events. “If you book a birthday party with us, you get the entire store for your party,” says Kat, who knew they had to offer birthday parties because there aren’t a lot of options in the area. “As a mom of young kids, driving over 20 minutes away for a kid’s birthday party is crazy to me. Bricks & Minifigs is right around the corner.”
Eventually the store will also offer camps. The pair also plan on working with schools to support S. T. E. A. M. initiatives and LEGO clubs where children can use LEGO to continue learning and bolstering creativity. They’re also looking forward to working with nonprofits that have the same community values the couple holds dear. “This is not only for the love of LEGO, but also about becoming pillars in our community,” says Kat. “We love this area, and we want to give back. It’s not just about opening a store and making money. For us, it’s about being an integral part of the community.” The new North Phoenix Bricks & Minifigs is located at 1730 W. Education Midwestern University Offers Hands-On Healthcare Career Experience for High School Students
M
idwestern University, in partnership with the BHHS Legacy Foundation, is offering high school students a full slate of free programs designed to stoke their interest in healthcare careers. Beginning on March 2 with the Arizona Regional Brain Bee, Midwestern University will then host the Health Sciences Virtual Career Month for High School Students in April. The capstone event, the seven-day Health Careers Institute for High School Students, takes place from July 15 to July 23. A live competition similar to a spelling bee, the Arizona Regional Brain Bee offers students the chance to compete for scholarships and other prizes by answering questions about the brain and central nervous system. Participation is free, and the winner will receive airfare and expense money to compete in the National Brain Bee Competition. This event will be held live, in-person on the Midwestern University campus.
The Virtual Health Sciences Career Month is designed for high school classes to benefit from hands-on activities and interactive presentations designed by Midwestern University’s healthcare professionals. Videos, hands-on activities, and question and answer sessions will highlight careers in osteopathic medicine, optometry, dental medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, occupational therapy, biomedical sciences, perfusion, podiatric medicine, clinical psychology, physical therapy, nurse anesthesia, speech-language pathology, and veterinary medicine. This event will be accessible online throughout the month of April. For students who want to learn about health careers more in depth, Midwestern will offer its seven-day Health Careers Institute for High School Students in July. Each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Midwestern faculty and advanced students will teach workshops in anatomy, physiology, and introductory skills for various health professions, with
a special focus on how to prepare for college and what to expect from each profession. To participate, students must be current juniors or seniors and submit an application, including short essays, grades, and teacher letter by May 1. Only 50 students can be accepted each year. Grab Your Shades, the Future is Bright for DVUSD! By Dr. Curtis Finch, Superintendent of the Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD)
D
oesn’t “Sunny DVUSD” sound like a radio station call-sign? I would not mind listening to a radio station with that name. Every year for the past 23 years as a public school superintendent, I have written a State of the District report card to inform the community, students, and district staff members of the past year’s progress and what the forecast looks like for the next year. The idea probably came from listening to years of politicians give their State of the State and State of the Nation addresses, usually causing me to react to the misinformation on the educational state of the public school district I worked at that year. It became clear to me public school superintendents are responsible to supply the correct information to their own communities. The State of District 2022 is designed to inform the Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) community of our path. The short version of the State of DVUSD message on calendar year 2021, in meteorological terms, mirrored the actual weather patterns we had in northern Maricopa County in 2021. DVUSD had many sunny days, but
there were several storms scattered throughout, with some big downpours late in the calendar year. The community, parents, businesses, students, and staff worked together to navigate all these storms, but the forecast for 2022 is bright. If you would like to read the entire State of DVUSD 2022, you can find it at dvusd.org/stateofdistrict. If you do not have time to read the entire document, the following paragraphs are the “Cliff Notes” version. (I highly encourage you though to read the document in full.) STATE OF DVUSD 2022 HIGHLIGHTS DVUSD students and staff won a large share of awards again in 2021, which can be viewed at dvusd.org/extraordinary. Deer Valley Unified School District also became a model Professional Learning Community (PLC) District, one of eleven large districts in the entire world. DVUSD worked with Governor Ducey to help fund the Friday PLC teachercollaboration days through Project Momentum. These two initiatives were the secret sauce to our continued academic excellence. Much of 2021 was focused on interventions for students, both academically and socially, as students came back to full time, in-person
education in 2021. Interventions continued to improve student academic, social, and emotional states and performance. The year 2022 is looking even brighter! The growth in our area will continue to accelerate and push DVUSD to continue
to adapt to the needs of the community. The DVUSD staff and students have learned to adapt quite well the past two years, so we look forward to whatever comes next. We will be ready! Dr. Finch can be reached at superintendent@dvusd.org.

Megan’s hand-crafted items have developed quite the following and even attracted the attention of celebrities, including Chrissy Teigen.
From personalized crayons, barrettes, pom pom garlands, and DIY paint kits, Megan sells these handmade items through her Etsy shop Carefree Highway Market (@ CarefreeHighwayMKT). The idea was formed from the mother and daughter frequently creating crafts together.
“She happened to be in town for a few days and reached out to me. I dropped all my orders and went to work to match the pastel theme Luna [Chrissy’s daughter] had for her fifth birthday party. A friend luckily told me to make crayons for Chrissy’s son, Miles…and they appeared in his cute little hands on Instagram.”
Her number one seller? Unicorn crayons. “Our 5-yearold, Gemma, decided on the idea and of course they became the number one seller,” says Megan, a Tramonto resident.

Valentine’s Day is a reminder that affection and unconditional love can make children emotionally happier and boost their confidence. Sure, it’s a time to celebrate the love you share with your significant other, but it’s also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of loving — and being loved — within the family. Here are seven ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. AFFIRMATION HEARTS Leave a heart on your child’s door each day of February until Valentine’s Day with something you love about them. Be specific in your compliments to make them feel extra special. Address their inner beauty: what makes them a good kid, sibling, son, daughter, student, etc. This is so easily done, nearly free and incredibly rewarding.
PLAN SOME QUALITY TIME Especially true for parents with multiple kids, individual time with each child can be hard to come by. Plan a date with each of your kids separately—truth be told, time is the greatest gift we could give someone. Honor their interests; for example, if one of your children loves art, take a parent-and-child painting class. If another child loves sports, allot time to picnic in the park and play catch. It doesn’t need to be over the top. REVERSE THE ROLES Let the kids play parents for the night. Allow them to cook you and your significant other dinner and dessert— you’ll be surprised how much they’ll enjoy role-playing waiter and waitress. Suggest they make you Valentine’s Day cards and decorate the dinner table with heart-infused drawings. Date night at home courtesy of the kids—score! If you don’t have a partner, let your kids oversee a night out for your family or you and your bestie. Love comes in all forms.

DELIVER VALENTINES Chances are your kids will be making Valentines for all their classmates, but you can take this a step further by making Valentines for friends and family. In fact, you can also show the community some love by delivering cookies to your local fire station or police department. Practicing appreciation is a good lesson of love to teach your kids.
CONSIDER THE SIMPLE THINGS Sure, there are so many cliches when it comes to V-Day, but sometimes the most important Valentine’s Day message isn’t in the form of something monetary. As parents, all we want is to make sure our kids feel safe, secure, and loved, but how can we do that aside from telling them we love them? Simple ideas include showing physical affection, reading together, and showing enthusiasm in what they’re talking about, what they’re doing, etc. Let them dream, listen to their dreams, and encourage them to work toward pursuing them. Show your family some love this Valentine’s Day and every day.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Kids learn most from their parents and caregivers, so for them to learn love, they must be shown love. If you’re in a romantic relationship, show them photos and talk about it. If you’re not, point to friendships and other relationships and talk about the

The director does a good job showing us their lives day by day as they continue to destroy themselves and each other, convinced some salvation still awaits them. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and tragic all at once—the best kind of film.
chase scenes and kills, but the writing only provides laughable connections to the original film and the usual “Scream” archetypes, giving their actors little to work with (though Jack Quaid and Jenna Ortega stand out well). By the end, it leaves you feeling, if not empty, unfulfilled, and sad watching all that talent wasted.

ON APPLE TV+ “Nightmare Alley” A con man’s rise and fall told in two acts, from the circus to the highest part of society, as he schemes his way with his fake psychic powers. Guillermo del Toro has always made films that can best be described as dark fairy tales, with their heightened sense of reality and unique designs and visuals. With his new film, he changes it up, slamming the film into harsh, wet reality, with only his heightened production design remaining. “Nightmare Alley” is a cold, bleak movie with little hope or light to be found as we watch our characters kill, cheat, and abandon each other for their gain. The actors perfectly reach their different levels of habitability, watching them slowly get further into the underbelly of the world they live in. Slow is a good word to describe this movie, one that wants you to experience every second of its ugly reality. It’s a watch that requires you to be patient, but if you stick with it, it rewards you well. “Red Rocket” A down-and-out actor’s journey to success as he moves back to his hometown. The events in “Red Rocket” are like a very humorous accident, one you can’t look away from as it gets worse and worse. Simon Rex’s performance as Mikey Saber is one of the best “scumbag” lead characters I’ve seen in recent years; a character that completely lacks selfawareness and is filled with delusions of grandeur. The supporting cast is filled with other colorful characters played by all sorts of discoveries by Sean Baker.
February 4 • “Moonfall” “Scream” Twenty-five years after the original murders, a new killer arrives, forcing the original survivors to unite with a new generation to stop them. I’m likely biased in this case as, outside of the fourth film, I’ve never really cared for “Scream” and only saw this new film due to the involvement of the filmmakers behind 2019’s excellent horror-comedy “Ready Or Not.” With this new installment, you get a meta take on legacy sequels and their family relations in typical “Scream” fashion (even despite the new directors and writers). As per usual with these movies (beyond the surprisingly clever fourth film from 2011), it’s obnoxious, to say the least and doesn’t have anything of intrigue to bring up. The directors do bring some good set pieces with the

• “Jackass Forever” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” A retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic play. As an exercise in visuals, Joel Coen’s solo debut as a director works. The minimalist production design is a sight to behold and, mixed with the black and white photography, it reminds one of classic German expressionism. Beyond that, if you’ve seen a prior version of Macbeth you’ve basically seen this one, as there’s little that this version offers to differ from prior versions. The main difference is the bigger stars than other film adaptations, and unfortunately, the main two leads, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, are miscast and don’t fit the devious nature of the characters. The other actors fare better, but the

R
