411: The Latest Local News You Need to Know 2024 ANNUAL ELECTION FOR PARKSIDE AND ACC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Starting on January 2, the annual election cycle begins for open positions on the Anthem Parkside Community Association (APCA) Board of Directors and the Anthem Community Council (ACC) (representing the Parkside community). Applicable residents will receive information in the mail about the election, qualifications, process, and timetable. There is one open seat on the ACC Board and three open seats on the APCA Board. The three open seats for the APCA will hold two-year terms, while the one open seat on the ACC will hold a three-year term. Purses for a Purpose
Anthem Giving Circle's glamorous 1950s-themed fundraiser aims to reach new heights in community support. Photos courtesy Anthem Giving Circle THIS YEAR, ANTHEM GIVING CIRCLE (AGC) IS SET TO DAZZLE THE COMMUNITY WITH ITS ANNUAL PURSES FOR A PURPOSE EVENT, COCHAIRED BY RHONDA VAN DYKE AND MARY MORRIS, BRINGING TOGETHER STYLE AND CHARITY IN A UNIQUE BLEND. The event is scheduled for February 6 at the elegant Ironwood Ballroom of the Anthem Country Club, 2708 W. Anthem Club Dr., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The 2024 theme, Hopelessly Devoted to Purses for a Purpose, nods to the iconic 1950s, inviting attendees to don period attire in a spirited celebration of the era. Tickets, priced at $70, include a drink and heavy appetizers, with raffle tickets available for a chance to win luxurious prizes, including a designer handbag valued at over $1,000 – the Attico 24H from Milan-based designers. Winners have the option to keep the bag or exchange it for store credit at Nordstrom.

Furthermore, AGC supports 13 local schools by distributing Walmart gift cards worth over $5,000 in both
March and October. These gift cards are utilized by the schools as needed to support student requirements. The funds raised at the purse event are immediately put to use in serving the community. AGC continues to welcome new members and donations year-round, emphasizing community involvement as the cornerstone of its success. Future plans include ongoing fundraisers and community-focused initiatives, such as the Mother's Day event where donated purses filled with personal care items are gifted to deserving women at the Foothills Food Bank.
Community support has been overwhelming, with several sponsors already onboard for future events, and additional sponsorships are encouraged. It's a great way to introduce basic chemistry concepts to kids in a playful manner. Objective To learn about acidic reactions and create secret messages using lemon juice as invisible ink. Materials • Lemons (or lemon juice) • Cotton swabs or small paintbrushes • White paper • A light bulb, an iron, or a hair dryer (heat source) • Water (optional, to dilute the lemon juice) Procedure 1. Juice Extraction: Squeeze the juice out of a lemon into a bowl. For a lighter ink, dilute with a little water. 2. Writing the Message: Dip a cotton swab or a small paintbrush into the lemon juice and write a message on the white paper. Let the paper dry completely; your message will become invisible once dry. 3. Revealing the Message: Carefully hold the paper near a heat source (such as a light bulb, an iron set on low heat, or a hair dryer). The heat will cause the lemon juice to oxidize and turn brown, revealing the secret message. Scientific Background • Lemon juice is acidic and weakens paper fibers. When heated, the acid accelerates the burning of these fibers, making the message appear. • This experiment teaches about chemical reactions, particularly oxidation, and the properties of acids. Safety Notes • Be careful when using heat sources. Adult supervision is recommended, especially with younger children. • Ensure the paper is held at a safe distance from the heat source to avoid any risk of burns or fire.

T
his summer, Arizona endured 55 days at or above 110 degrees, and when the season totals are released, it may be one of the driest monsoon periods. But your roof did its job keeping you out of the sun, right? Yes, but while you replace sunburned plants, you should check the health of your roof. Just as your air-conditioning worked overtime this summer, so did your roof. “I guarantee the heat this summer has destroyed more roofs than people think,” says Pat Stapleton, president of Stapleton Roofing in Phoenix. “And when the winter rains hit, which are coming soon, there are going to be a lot of people in a lot of trouble.” A third-generation roofer, Stapleton started roofing out of high school and worked up to foreman, supervisor, and roof sales for the past 20 years. In 2010, he and his wife, Cindy, opened Stapleton Roofing “because we felt we could do a better job than most,” he says. The most challenging part of starting the business, he says, was finding quality roofing crews that could follow his rules and regulations and place roofs how he wanted. “We’ve grown the business enough to have good help, supervisors, and crews. We remove everything down to the wood substrate to determine if there is rotten wood, but some companies will place new underlayment over old underlayment. We never have any complaints. Everyone is proud of their work, and they do a good job.”
PREVENTING ROOF DAMAGE
As Arizonans know and the experienced Stapleton Roofing crew sees regularly, the sun isn’t the roof’s only threat. Thunderstorms, hail, heavy winds, and other severe weather conditions constantly pummel a home’s protector. A roof will stand firm through many tests, but sometimes it needs a little boost or repair. When it comes to storm damage and your roof, Stapleton Roofing recommends three categories of action: prevention, inspection, and restoration. “Since it doesn’t rain a lot, when it does, it rains hard,” Stapleton says. “That’s also what gets people in trouble. It goes so long without rain that people think their roof is fine. Suddenly, when it rains hard, your roof leaks.”

He says that when bad weather is brewing on the horizon, a few quick preparations can help protect your roof. First, make sure all loose items in your yard have been brought in or secured. This includes lawn ornaments, patio furniture, or some loose hanging decorations. Second, ensure no branches are within six feet of your roof. In high winds, tree limbs can act like whips or even snap off and impact your roof. Third, clean out your gutters and drainage systems. Ensuring no blockages are present will help keep water flowing as it should and protect your home. “Tree branches are the big killer for us,” says Stapleton. “When the wind blows, the branches get caught in the tile. So, you want to trim your trees and the branches off your roof.”
INSPECTING YOUR ROOF
While you can prepare your yard to prevent roof damage, bad weather can still harm it. That’s why inspecting your roof is essential before and after bad weather. Stapleton says beforehand, on shingle roofs, it’s a good idea to check for cracked or worn boots around pipes; excessive amounts of shingle granules in your gutters; missing, warped, or broken shingles; and shingles that are curling or buckling. Look for shifted tile, exposed underlayment, and lifted vents on tile roofs. “Each of these can lead to larger problems with your roof, including potential water leakage during the next storm,” he explains. You can also call Stapleton Roofing to do the inspection. It’s free to have your roof assessed. Stapleton stresses to make sure your homeowners/ property insurance is current. He says most insurance companies will cover storm damage but won’t replace an old, neglected roof. Additionally, most insurance companies will provide a discount when a roof is replaced. It’s also important to know that not all states require contractors to have a license to perform work, says Stapleton. “Arizona has a regulatory agency, known as the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, which requires roofing contractors to have a license to perform work legally. It requires a minimum of a two-year

HOW LONG WILL YOUR ROOF LAST?
Even with the best prevention and inspections, roofs must be replaced at least once in their lifetime. If your house was built over 15 to 20 years ago, it will be ready for a reroof anytime, says Stapleton. He warns that tile roofs aren’t as easy to determine the condition without lifting the tile to view the underlayment. Signs of a failing roof are shifted tile, damaged facia, or damaged wood under the eave. Shingle roofs are more accessible to view when there is damage to the roof. You will see rotten wood, and the shingles will lose their granules and curl up. “Start inspecting your roof when it’s 15 years old,” Stapleton says. “It’s time for a new roof if it’s 20 years old. Phoenix Real Estate Rollercoaster: 2023 Wrap-Up and 2024 Kickoff – Why Homes Are Defying the Odds By Shelley Sakala

appy New Year, North Phoenix homeowners! As we kick off 2024, let’s dive into the real estate scene right here in our beloved Valley of the Sun. So, here’s the scoop: While the nation is buzzing about high-interest rates making sellers rethink their price tags, guess what? In the Phoenix metro market, a whopping 19.22% of homes are still selling above the listing price! Yep, you heard that right. We’re defying the odds. According to the number wizards at Redfin Corp., October saw a 5.49%
jump in homes sold above the listing price compared to the previous year. Nationally, the increase was 2.7%, so you can see, Phoenix is really standing out. Now, you might be wondering if this means buyers are taking over the game. Well, not exactly. The housing market is doing a little dance, giving buyers more say, but prices are still doing the limbo, staying pretty high. The good news? They’re not skyrocketing like they did in recent years. In October, homes in the Valley went for about 98.48% of the listing price. Our median sales price is holding steady at $450,000, the same as
October 2022. But hold on to your hats, folks, because it did nudge up by 2.27% from September. Redfin’s got the numbers to prove it! Now, here’s a tidbit that might make you smile. Homes are still zipping off the market in various areas. In and around Phoenix, the median days on the market in October was 40. That’s down from 52 a year ago, although a bit longer than the national median of 34 days. In another October report, R.L. Brown spilled the beans that sales in the Phoenix metro were up by 4.04% year over year. And guess what else? New homebuilder permits more than
doubled from last October to this one. Exciting times, right? Zooming out a bit, let’s talk about the national housing picture. While nearly one-third of homes across the country sold above list price in October, some cities went above and beyond. Rochester, New York; Hartford, Connecticut; and Buffalo, New York took the cake with percentages as high as 72%! Meanwhile, we’re holding our own here in the Valley, with an average of 99% of listing prices being the magic number. Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: the “missing middle.” It’s like the Goldilocks of housing, not too big, not too small. Business Journals crunched the numbers from Zillow, revealing that more ZIP codes are now demanding a six-figure income. The “missing middle” is the gap between single-family homes and midrise apartments, including duplexes and townhouses. It’s all part of the evolving landscape. So, there you have it, Phoenix. I’VE LIVED IN PHOENIX FOR ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the amazing people, the food scene, our Sonoran culture, and all of the great opportunities here! A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I know this will sound cliché, but there really is no typical day in my life. I think post-pandemic, most of us who juggle many roles will agree. However, as a radio personality, Realtor, nonprofit founder, and MPA/PPC student, here’s what my day looked like as of writing this: It started by taking my son to school in the early morning, followed by the gym. My goal is to be done by 8:30 a.m. Next, I went right to real estate business. I have a few clients looking to buy from out-of-state, so I am extra careful to be as thorough as possible since they aren’t here. They are depending on me to be their eyes, ears,
and more to help them find their new place to call home. Before and after lunch, I caught up with a few of my community partners for our 17th Annual Crisco’s Kids Ton of Toys and Holiday Food Drive to show my appreciation for them coming on board to support us this year. By 2 p.m., I like to be at the radio station to begin preparing for my show. Even though I am on from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (101.1 The Bounce), it takes time before and after to put together the show I do for the Valley. You can also listen to me on Pitbull’s Globalization on SiriusXM! After my show, we enjoyed a dinner with some family time after and put our son to sleep. Now, I’m on to finishing up emails and any other work I missed before I’ll spend another hour or two preparing for my final projects this semester. If I’m in bed by 2 a.m., I’m good!

If you have children, you likely are concerned with the wellbeing of your child. Parents must be concerned with both their children’s physical and mental health. Most parents want the best for their children, and that includes education. Arizona often ranks at the bottom of all the states for spending per capita per student. In fact, a somewhat recent report conducted by the University of Arizona’s Economic and Research Center cites that as of June 2, 2021, Arizona spent $8,625 per pupil compared to a national average of $13,187. In that study, only Utah and Idaho spent less on their students. Combined with low per capita spending, many schools have chosen to project controversial subjects onto children that are in direct conflict with what the parents wish for their children to be exposed to or taught. The COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges and also provided valuable insights into the diverse needs and preferences for our children’s education. We are fortunate to have a variety of educational options available - including private, public, and charter schools, as well as in-person and online formats. Each option offers its unique advantages and potential drawbacks, allowing families to choose what aligns best with their needs and values. Parenting is undeniably a demanding and significant role. It’s essential for parents to find support and strategies that reduce stress and help in nurturing their children according to cherished family values. The availability of different educational choices is one of the ways parents can tailor their approach to best support their children’s growth and development.

This Parents’ Bill of Rights gives the parents the right to sue for damages caused by any entity, government or private, that violates the parents’ rights.
No matter where your child is attending, there are remedies for when or if you find that your child’s study has strayed beyond the boundaries of your values.
You are not helpless. In Arizona, your ability to be a parent is still intact, but it is imperative that parents understand and assert their rights. Most good attorneys will advise that lawsuits are an avenue of last resort and therefore, it is best to consult with an attorney if you feel that you have an issue that needs to be addressed so an attorney can make a legal determination about what may be the best course of action for your situation.

"The Holdovers" A grumpy boarding school professor forms a unique bond with a troubled student and the head cook over the Christmas break. It’s admirable that "The Holdovers" succeeds in recreating the look and aesthetic of the decade it is set in and inspired by. Thankfully, it's not just a superficial homage but also its own complete picture about the complicated people we call family. Paul Giamatti reminds everyone how good he truly is after staying mostly out of the spotlight, playing a gruff man who is more thoughtful than he seems. Meanwhile, Da'Vine Joy Randolph brilliantly portrays a range of emotions as a woman who has gone through an unspeakable tragedy while maintaining empathy. Newcomer Dominic Sessa elevates what could have been a clichéd “rough kid with a heart of gold” role. It’s a movie that feels familiar yet brings something fresh to the table, and that alone is worth your attention.
"Candy Cane Lane" A father and his family race to beat a mischievous elf who brings the 12 days of Christmas to life and to win the neighborhood’s contest for best-decorated home.
"Leave the World Behind" A family’s trip to upstate New York is interrupted by the appearance of the house’s owners and signs of terror. One of the most jarring movies of the year, "Leave the World Behind" is surprisingly amateurish, especially compared to the great writer/ director Sam Esmail’s TV series, "Mr. Robot." The film hammers you with its attempts at ideas without saying anything particularly intriguing. The filmmaking is also incredibly self-indulgent, flashy for the sake of flashiness. Most of the cast delivers subpar performances, though Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali certainly do their best with what they're given. It’s the type of film that fails to be intense or engaging, instead becoming merely irritating. By the midway point, you might find yourself disinterested in the characters' fates. It’s also worth noting it features one of the most illconceived final jokes in recent cinema.

"May December" An actress becomes entangled in the lives of a couple whose controversial romance is the subject of her new movie. "May December" has been mistakenly described as camp because its camera movements, music, and uncanny tone showcase how unsettling the movie can be. You're peering into the nightmare of the predatory relationship between Gracie and Joe, portrayed convincingly by Julianne Moore’s emotionally manipulative character and Charles Melton’s portrayal of quiet suffering. Natalie Portman delivers a performance that reflects a strange obsession with the world around her, bordering on inappropriate, mirroring our culture’s odd fascination with true crime without considering its impact on those involved. Director Todd Haynes creates a palpable unease around our protagonists and their surroundings, making us feel we should look away, but we can't. It's a remarkable achievement from everyone involved.
Director Reginald Hudlin attempts to capture the spirit of the holiday season, and there is some charm to be found, particularly in the stopmotion animation. However, "Candy Cane Lane" mostly goes through the motions as a family film, dragging on too long and ending up rather dull. Eddie Murphy still manages to charm just with his smile, but one can't help but wish for more, especially after his brilliant performance in "Dolemite Is My Name." The rest of the cast shows potential in their comedic timing but isn’t given much to work with. The film is an example of a missed opportunity for what could have been an enjoyable experience.
