Solar Panel Prices Rising Sharply in 2nd Quarter. Act NOW to Lock in Current Pricing!

By Erick O’Donnell

I

n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work. Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer. Technological innovation and scaledup production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow. And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according

to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year. Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. Depending on how soon your system is installed, you could even secure your 26 percent federal tax credit in time to use it early next year. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Our projections show that the average solar customer can expect to save an estimated $50,000 to $100,000 over a 25-year period. Our customer testimonials show that Sunsolar Solutions is focused on maximizing savings by harnessing the greatest amount of solar energy possible (and, along with it, the greatest tax savings possible). Another major advantage to going solar early in 2022 is that the system will have time to generate the credits needed to knock down next summer’s electricity costs. In the winter and spring months, solar systems in the Valley create a big surplus of power, which is turned into cash credits on the homeowner’s utility account. Those credits are used in the summer months to offset hot-weather usage. If you choose to start your project soon, the system will be installed in time to produce those essential credits. Even in an era of economic volatility, time can be on your side—that is, if you’re willing to act and leave unnecessary risks behind. Sunsolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Hello, Councilman!

An Introduction From District 2 Phoenix City Councilman Jim Waring I HOPE YOU HAD A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND I’D LIKE TO WISH YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR! The district I represent covers the area from the Paradise Valley border south of Shea, north along Scottsdale Road to Carefree Highway, west across to I-17, and drops back down. There are eight council districts and we each represent about 200,000 or so residents. That’s much bigger than many other Valley cities and towns. We’re pretty spread out because of all the state trust land in our area and that poses unique challenges when it comes to infrastructure. For example, we have more miles of streets than the other districts. Of the 5,000 miles of city streets, we have 705.

As a council member, I’m basically part of a board of directors; we hire a City Manager to be our CEO, and he or she hires the 14,000 city employees who provide the backbone for our city services and infrastructure. That includes the police department and fire department, whose members make up about 65 percent of the workforce. The city of Phoenix staff run such diverse operations, such as Sky Harbor Airport, the Water and Public Works departments, our library and parks systems, and the Phoenix Suns Arena. Our overall budget is roughly $4.5 billion every year. Obviously, in these trying times, we’ve had our challenges. I’m doing everything pos-

sible to ensure our police force has what they need to protect us all. Unfortunately, even though the city has raised the police budget, recruitment and retention of officers has become a major issue. Our 2,750 officers make approximately 1.2 million contacts with the public every year. They carry a heavy burden, and they deserve our respect and support. If you get the opportunity, please thank our officers for the sacrifices they make on our behalf. I look forward to what this year will bring and wish you a happy 2022! Councilman Jim Waring will be contributing regular articles on city issues pertinent to our readers. To learn more, visit phoenix.gov/ district2.

Now Available: myPHX311 Mobile App PHOENICIANS NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO REPORT ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITY FROM THEIR SMARTPHONES. The City of Phoenix recently announced the launch of a new service through an app called ‘MyPHX311’ that allows residents to pay their City Services Bill, report quality-of-life issues, and request city services. “The City of Phoenix is constantly innovating to best

serve our residents. This app will allow for quicker, more efficient service to meet the needs of every Phoenician. I’m proud our city listens to our residents and adapts to the changing environment to allow for flexible, creative solutions,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. The new mobile app is a complement to the recently upgraded version “PHX At Your Service” web portal (now Phoenix.gov/myPHX311). The myPHX311 app is optimized for smartphones but can also be used on tablets. With this new digital interactive experience, residents can send reports directly to the City’s website. The app allows community members to provide city staff with pictures, videos, descriptions, and the location when reporting an issue. “The launch of this application ensures our residents, business owners and community members have quick, easy access to city services,” says City Manager Jeff Barton. “Now that much of our lives has gone virtual, it’s important to have a city services app that makes sharing and retrieving information easy for everyone.”

4 • January 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

Once the app is downloaded (Phoenix.gov/app), users can create an account to access most of the features available. Users can also proceed as a guest. The app is also available in Spanish. Users can search job postings, review street closures and neighborhood programs. Each item is linked directly to the Phoenix.govwebsite, making it easy to follow up on service requests and stay up to date on all the resources Phoenix has to offer. The MyPHX311 mobile app is available for download on Android and iOS. The public should continue to report emergencies by calling 911. Emergency or urgent service requests should not be reported on the app. To report water or sewer-related emergencies such as a broken water main, fire hydrant, or water service line (between a water meter and the street) or sewer backups, call 602-2618000. Issues that occur outside of Phoenix’s jurisdiction should be reported to the appropriate agency or organization. myhyperlocalnews.com

Daisy Mountain Fire Earns National Recognition DAISY MOUNTAIN FIRE & MEDICAL DEPARTMENT HAS RECEIVED THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S “MISSION: LIFELINE EMS GOLD PLUS” ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR IMPLEMENTING SPECIFIC QUALITY IMPROVEMENT MEASURES TO TREAT PATIENTS WHO SUFFER SEVERE HEART ATTACKS. Each year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack, caused by a blockage

of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it is critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication. The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks – starting from when 9-1-1 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. Optimal care for heart attack

patients takes coordination between the individual hospital, EMS and health care system. “EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” says Tim Henry, M.D., chair of the Mission: Lifeline Acute Coronary Syndrome Subcommittee. “Since they often are the first medical point of contact, they can save precious minutes of treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals to an incoming heart attack patient.” Program participants apply for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care for STEMI patients. “Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to providing optimal care for heart attack patients,” says Assistant Chief Dan Jarrett. “The Mission: Lifeline program puts proven knowledge and

guidelines to work on a daily basis so patients have the best possible chance of survival.” To learn more about Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical, visit daisymountainfire.org.

City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services’ Department in Need of Public Input Residents have until January 17 to provide feedback online DO YOU HAVE IDEAS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND CITY? Now here’s your chance to be heard.

Each year, the city will implement those strategies identified through the five-year Consolidated Plan through an Annual Action Plan.

The city of Phoenix is commencing with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) FY 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan. Every five years, the city of Phoenix partners with the community to develop a strategic Consolidated Plan. The plan defines strategies to address housing, community development needs, and current market conditions for the city of Phoenix to make informed decisions on an estimated $135 million in HUD grant funding. Grants include the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Home Investment Partnership (HOME), Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA), and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG).

Residents’ input is needed to help identify and prioritize community needs and the best methods and programs to address those needs for the 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan.

myhyperlocalnews.com

The city of Phoenix is conducting a survey to obtain community and stakeholder input relative to the priorities identified through the 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan. The survey will be open through January 17 and can be accessed at phoenix.gov/ yourvoice. In early March, a virtual public hearing will be held to

share the results of the 2022-2023 survey and provide an opportunity for public input on the draft 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan. Comments may also be provided to Tennille Burton, Grants Compliance Supervisor, by email at Tennille.Burton@phoenix.gov or by phone at 602-534-1181. City News Phoenix Road Safety Action Plan In Need of Resident Input THE CITY OF PHOENIX’S STREET TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT’S MISSION IS TO, “PROVIDE FOR THE SAFE, EFFICIENT AND CONVENIENT MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND GOODS WITHIN THE CITY AND SUPPORT CITYWIDE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN PHOENIX.” Understanding the importance of safety as a core function of the department, and due to recent data trending in a negative direction, Phoenix is investing in a comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan (RSAP) that will further the city’s current efforts and provide a framework and key strategies for safety enhancements citywide. Leila’s Empanadas Family Food Brand Launches In Anthem, Gives Back to Local Kids In Need NEW LOCALLY-OWNED FOOD BRAND LEILA’S EMPANADAS HAS ARRIVED, PROVIDING NORTH VALLEY RESIDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVOR THE AUTHENTIC FLAVORS OF BRAZIL. So, what is an empanada? It’s a half-moonshaped baked pastry stuffed with a variety of fillings. These hand-sized turnovers start as a soft pocket of dough that is filled with scrumptious ingredients, then folded over itself to seal before cooking to have a rich, flaky coating. These delicious, wrapped bundles are a very versatile cuisine and can be eaten as a satisfying meal for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert. The name of this handheld food comes from the Galician verb “empanar,” and translates as “embreaded,” that is, wrapped in bread. Owner and chef Leila Beltrame’s passion for making artisan empanadas was born from her grandma ‘Nona’ inspiring her love of cooking. Growing up in southern Brazil in a farming family, she knows first-hand the benefits of cooking with fresh ingredients and the challenges for when that is no longer an option. Her family’s farm encountered devastation from losing crops to frosts on multiple occasions, and it was thanks to Nona’s knowledge of preserving and preparing food that they were able to survive the destruction and rebuild.

to her company’s vision: “We believe that everyone should have access to healthy, delicious and convenient food.”

With her upbringing, Leila has graciously committed to having a portion of proceeds from every order go to battle child hunger locally. She has chosen to partner with North Valley-based nonprofit Homeless Engagement Lift Partnership to benefit their H.E.L.P. Snackz Program that fills the hunger gap by providing meals to local students through daily afternoon nutritional snack bags.

Leila’s Empanadas are available now at leilasempanadas.com by the dozen for local pre-order and pick-up at Sam’s Frozen Yogurt in Anthem or regional delivery through DoorDash. Convenient options include three flavors of empanadas, including savory beef, succulent chicken and olive, and delectable apple with crème brûlée as well as their appetizing glutenfree Brazilian cheese rolls with a scrumptious cheese filling. All four handheld food products are made with quality, wholesome ingredients and are quick to heat and serve, providing delicious, healthy, and easy meal options in opposition to settling for fast food.

“I know how hard it is to try to learn with an empty stomach,” Beltrame says. “I believe in feeding and treating kids well so that they will be able to create a better future for themselves and others.” This cause is very close to Leila’s heart and tied

As Anthem residents, Leila and her family are elated to bring this traditional LatinAmerican flavorful cuisine to the North Phoenix community and give back to others in need, living by the mantra “Let’s eat well, together!” myhyperlocalnews.com

The free event has three clinic times per location starting a 9, 10 and 11 a.m. where juniors and their parents will learn the basics skills of golf taught by qualified PGA and LPGA professionals. After the clinics, the kids will participate in fun-filled, non-competitive golf games and tournaments. Each golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs, balls, a bag, and a visor; participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer. “The Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” says Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “It’s always fun to see so many kids having such a good time. It’s very exciting to think that a threeyear-old kid attending the Itty Bitty Open will likely

still be playing the game for decades to come. We’re honored to help them begin that journey.” A special contest will be held at each session for the “Best Dressed Golfer and Caddie Team.” Anything goes for the contest: classic golf fashion; contemporary golf fashion; or any unique golf duds that may come to mind. All winners will receive a trophy. Space is limited; sign up before January 10 deadline at jgaa.org/membership/itty-bitty-open. For those would like to check availability after the entry deadline, call 602-944-6168. NORTH PHOENIX ITTY BITTY OPEN LOCATIONS • Beuf Community Center 3435 W. BARRETT-JACKSON IS REVVING UP FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE EVENT OF THE YEAR WHEN IT RETURNS TO WESTWORLD OF SCOTTSDALE FROM JANUARY 22-30 TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF ‘THE WORLD’S GREATEST COLLECTOR CAR AUCTIONS.’ The annual Scottsdale auction has hosted some of the most electrifying moments in collector car history over the last five decades. “We’re preparing to host the world’s most exciting automotive lifestyle event to celebrate 50 years of ‘The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,’” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “When my father Russ and his business partner, Tom Barrett, set out to raise money for the Scottsdale library with a local car show, they had no idea the impact they would have on the collector hobby over the next five decades. We’re proud of our heritage and the role we’ve played in the collector car hobby over the last half-century, and we can’t wait to continue this legacy, beginning with our flagship Scottsdale auction.”

“I like to remind clients that the most important thing is to start small. Exercise is not like riding a bike. You might remember what to do, but your muscles need a little time,” he says. “If you used to exercise for an hour, start with 15 minutes. If you used to cover three miles in one hour, now you may only be able to do one mile and that’s okay.” As Alex points out, it is not uncommon for people to take time off from exercising during the holidays; others may have stopped workout routines due to fitness center closures. Another important part of getting back to physical activity is to reestablish the routine, and that does not happen overnight.

Don't you wish insurance was easier?

Let our local team compare insurance quotes for you.

As Sun Health’s Wellness Specialist, Alex Stark, M.S., says the key to making sure you stay true to your New Year’s resolution of getting back to exercising is to start SUN HEALTH’S WELLNESS small. SPECIALIST ALEX STARK, M.S.

28421 VISTANCIA BLVD. SUITE 101, PEORIA, AZ 85383 Next to Safeway in Vistancia

“It takes 12 weeks to establish a habit, so the sooner you start the habit and do it more regularly, the more success you will have in the long run,” Alex says. “And the smaller amounts and working up to frequency is key as well. Once you establish the behavior again, if you get off track something will feel amiss because you get an adrenaline boost when you exercise, and when you don’t you will feel groggy and miss the feeling. It’s all about getting back to the routine.”

Another important reminder when getting back on track — remember to drink plenty of water and warm up before stepping out into the cool weather to exercise. Also, forgetting to stretch out could land you in the physician’s office. “It is easy to think because it is cooler outside, I am not as likely to sweat or get overheated, so I do not need as much water, which is not the case. Our bodies are like engines and always need water,” Alex says. “And be sure you warm up before going outside in the cool temperatures. If you do not stretch or ease into whatever you might be doing, you can easily get a cramp, which could lead to injury. Ease into what you are doing. Don’t just step outside and start sprinting.” Alex reminds us to take getting back to exercising day by day and to be easy on yourself as you reestablish the habit. He cautions that although habits may take 12 weeks to form, as soon as you start to work on them, they will grow into a habit. The key is not to overthink it, keep it simple, and before you know it, regular exercise will be part of your 2022 routine. As Alex says, reestablishing the habit is the most important part of getting back to a physically active lifestyle. Join Alex as he presents a class called “Getting Back on Track” on January 31 available in person or via Zoom. The Latest Medical Advice for Influenza, And How It Differs From COVID-19 By Manisha Shah, D.O.

M

ost people dread getting sick. The winter season, notoriously known for viruses such as influenza, causes various ailments. The severity increases among extremes of ages, pregnant women, and persons of all ages with chronic medical conditions. If an individual does contract influenza, early detection and treatment can decrease the duration of infection. Ultimately, the best approach to remaining illness-free occurs with vaccination. Traditionally, influenza viruses (most commonly influenza A and influenza B) transmit through largeparticle respiratory droplets from one person to another. Inconspicuous transmission occurs when a person coughs or sneezes. Thus, public spaces serve as a breeding ground for viral contamination. Preventative measures are vital to avoid communal spread. Individuals with an infection display symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and body aches. Young children may present with nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Influenza and COVID-19 infections cause similar symptoms, however, COVID-19 infections continue throughout the year. Viral testing

differentiates the two. Early detection with testing allows for maximum treatment benefits and quicker resolution of symptoms.

it decreases the risk significantly. If symptoms arise, viral testing should still occur because vaccination status does not preclude an individual from treatment.

Health care providers usually diagnose the flu using a nasal swab in combination with a throat swab. Depending on the test, results are available within minutes to several hours. Symptomatic patients should test as close to the onset of infection to maximize detection of the virus. Symptoms resolve within three to seven days (for a course without complications), although cough and fatigue may persist for more than two weeks.

Treatment options exist for people testing positive for influenza. Besides supportive measures such as fluid hydration, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications for fever and body aches, antiviral medications can curb the course of an infection. The antiviral medication a health care provider chooses will depend on the age of the patient and their medical history. These medications may reduce the duration of symptoms, the risk of hospitalization, complications such as ear infections or pneumonia, and death rates in highrisk populations. In addition, antiviral medications have an added benefit of preventing an infection if a close contact tested positive for influenza.

The CDC recommends the influenza vaccine, known as the flu shot, for all people age six months and older. The influenza vaccine provides the most effective prevention against illness and its complications. The level of protection the vaccination provides depends on age and health of the recipient, the type of vaccine, the type of circulating influenza viruses in the community, and the similarity between circulating viruses and those in the vaccine. Eligible children under eight years of age without a previous influenza vaccination history should receive two doses of the vaccine four weeks apart. Vaccination does not guarantee protection from influenza, however,

Procedures for infection control include respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, face masks, and hand hygiene. Following these initial strategies, along with the influenza vaccine, can reduce the ramifications of the flu. Avenue 27 Re-Opens, Welcoming Local Diners The fine dining restaurant at Barry Goldwater High School reemerges with in-person service and a rejuvenated menu

T

Dining is open to the public by reservation only. As of press time, spring semester dates include: February 11 and 18; March 4 and 25; April 8 and 22; and May 6. Menus will change frequently and reflect the seasons.

he student-run, full-service restaurant on the campus of Barry Goldwater High School (BGHS) has just reopened for in-person dining. The awardwinning restaurant, which first opened to the public in 2018, was closed for in-person dining throughout last school year due to COVID-19 restrictions. During that time, the restaurant offered a special take-out menu and theme nights. Changing the restaurant’s model helped students learn about adaptability.

Avenue 27 is located at Barry Goldwater High School, 2820 W. Rose Garden Lane, in Phoenix. To make a reservation, email Avenue27@dvusd.org or call 623-445-3227. Additional information and menus are posted at dvusd.org/Avenue27.

“Students strategized menus that could hold up to takeout while still offering the high-quality food expected from Avenue 27. They had to change their mindset to continue to run a restaurant and have a fulfilling workbased learning experience,” says chef and BGHS culinary teacher Ryan Mattheis. The restaurant offers students a real-world culinary experience, including dealing with supply chain problems. “Students have to think quickly to come up with suitable substitutions on our menus. The positive byproduct of this is the Avenue 27 students have become incredibly resilient and they are even more prepared for their careers in the food industry,” says Mattheis. Many former students who have worked with Mattheis and fellow teacher/chef Esther Skinner have gone on to

exciting and fulfilling careers in the culinary industry. Former BGHS culinary students are working all over the Valley in top resorts and restaurants, while others work as traveling corporate chefs, pastry chefs and sous chefs for some of the biggest names in the industry. “I love when former students come back to let me know how well they are doing. It is truly inspiring,” Mattheis says. The BGHS Culinary Program and Avenue 27 were recognized in 2020 as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program of the Year, which is the highest CTE award in the state. That kind of recognition might make some less hungry for success, but Mattheis and Skinner aren’t resting on their laurels. “This spring will bring rejuvenated menus and exciting special events. And, if you can’t join us in-person, we are in the planning stages of offering take away meal kits so you can prepare some of the delicious Avenue 27 meals in your own home,” says Mattheis. For those dining in-person, pandemic safety precautions are in place. Students are wearing masks, and physical barriers are set on the host stand for the safety of students and guests.

Community

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Anna Keller. I LIVE AT THE RETREAT AT ALAMEDA IN NORTH PHOENIX AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… Everyone is so nice and friendly. They take very good care of me and I am happy here. Originally, I didn’t want to come and live here but my daughters thought it would be best for me. I am so glad they convinced me to come here. The staff here even takes my dog Willie out every day since I have trouble walking long distances. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Good food, company, and activities. I’m able to get any meal I like from here. I have new friends that I get to learn more about each day and I even get to have entertainment in the dining room every week. I also enjoy watching my favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, when they play. I put on my favorite jersey to cheer them on.

MY FAMILY IS… My two daughters, Darlene and Donna. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… People. They make the difference in your life. I’ve always been a social person; I worked in a flower shop and as a waitress for many years. I like to learn more about people and hear their stories. I think that is what makes us all happy. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… Casablanca. The characters are such good actors and it is a great love story. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A teacher. I had great teachers in my life that inspired me. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Anything by Frank Sinatra. I know all of his songs and could sing right along with him. THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME ARE… My daughters. I’m so proud of them. They have become such good people and work so hard. They own a ribbon shop and travel throughout the world. This time of year is particularly busy for them because everyone loves ribbon at Christmas time. They have such beautiful patterns for people to use. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My dog Willie. He is so funny, always wanting me to be by his side. When I leave my apartment, he barks for a bit because he wants to go with me. THE PERFECT DAY IS… Going with friends on an outing to the beach. I love to sit by the beach and hear the ocean, feel the sun on my face, and visit with friends. I’ve always liked the warm weather and when I was in New Orleans, we would go to the beach a lot and I always remember what good times I had while I was there. The only thing that would make the perfect day even better would be eating shrimp and grits!

I’m grateful and blessed to have lived such a rich life and am happy with where I am today because of it. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… My daughters. Everything I have and done would not be possible without their love and support. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Honolulu. Hawaii is so beautiful, and the ocean is amazing. Real Estate The 2022 Real Estate Market to See an Increase in Home Inventory By Shelley Sakala

H

appy 2022! Now that we’re done shaking off the confetti from New Year’s Eve, let’s check out what our local real estate market has in store for us.

Last year featured a lot of profit, quick sales, and bidding wars, which frustrated people who watched one home after another get swept up by buyers with deeper pockets. If your plans to buy a house last year got derailed, help is on the way in the form of an increase in home inventory. During earlier stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, programs were created to offer consumer protection, including a moratorium on foreclosures. Banks also introduced

enhanced forbearance programs that allowed homeowners to press the pause button on their mortgage payments. These were designed to help keep people in their homes while navigating the economic hardships of the pandemic. As these programs have now run their course, landlords and banks have begun resuming normal operations – including the unfortunate business of foreclosures. We saw foreclosures spike at the end of 2021, and the trend looks to continue this year. The foreclosed homes will eventually enter the marketplace, boosting available inventory for would-be home buyers. This increase in supply should also help slow down surging home prices. You can still expect prices to increase, but at a slower pace.

tionally and financially. We saw the effects this had on families back in 2009 (albeit on a much larger scale). While we certainly don’t want to celebrate someone’s misfortune, we can objectively observe its impact on the real estate market. As we get deeper into the new year there will undoubtedly be a rise in foreclosures. And from this hardship, Phoenix home buyers will see opportunity as the wheels of the marketplace continue to turn.

Losing a home to foreclosure is a big blow, both emo-

Education School Notes: News from Deer Valley Unified School District

DVUSD RECEIVES CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE IN FINANCIAL REPORTING For more than 40 years, the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting has honored school districts for excellence and best practices. Heather Mock, DVUSD Director of Finance, and her team recently received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020. This award, which was presented by the Association of School Business Officials International, represents a significant achievement and reflects their commitment to the highest standards of school system financial reporting. SCHOOL BOUNDARY APPROVED FOR NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The DVUSD Governing Board approved school boundar-

ies for the new Elementary #32, which is currently under construction at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road. The new boundary for Elementary #32 follows along the canal to the north, Pyramid Peak Parkway to the west, and Happy Valley Road to the south. Street-level maps are currently being developed and will be posted at dvusd.org/Elementary32 in the future. The new school opens August 2022 and will initially serve K-6 students, with the infrastructure in place for future expansion to a K-8 campus. The school’s temporary name is Elementary School #32. In addition to approving the school’s boundaries, the new principal has also been announced—Dr. JoAnn Schwarting, the 2021 DVUSD Principal of The Year, will take over the reins of Elementary #32. DVUSD CELEBRATES PROJECT MOMENTUM GRANT The Deer Valley Unified School District is honored to partner with Project Momentum through a grant from the Governor’s office. This partnership began in 2019 with three DVUSD schools: Barry Goldwater High School, Desert Mountain School, and Sandra Day O’Connor High School. Since then, DVUSD has added its other three high schools, and four additional elementary schools to this grant. Under the leadership of Dan Parris, Project Momentum has provided a framework for these schools to engage in the work of the Collaborative Teaming Process.

“Project Momentum is committed to improve outcomes for kids,” Parris says. “When I look at the results that you have achieved as a system... Deer Valley has done an amazing job and I am confident that you will carry that work into the future and serve as a role model for other systems in Arizona and around the country. I applaud Superintendent Finch’s work with Professional Learning Communities. This structure aligns very well with that.” Over the last four years, $3 million has been provided to compensate DVUSD teachers for: planning during the summer, receiving additional training to align with the project model, providing time to work together as teams to collaborate and plan, and providing principal partners to mentor DVUSD principals in the next steps along the journey.

Kids’ Corner

Achievable New Year’s Resolutions for Families By Nadine Bubeck Photo by J. Anthony Martinez Photography

I

’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions as they often leave me feeling defeated. However, I do believe there’s value in setting high hopes for a fresh year. As we begin 2022, here are eight doable goals for families who seek making home life more harmonious. START A SPECIAL WEEKLY OR MONTHLY RITUAL My kids love board games and I often find myself putting off playing due to being distracted with work, cleaning, cooking, and more. However, starting a dedicated and consistent ritual would hold our entire family accountable for partaking in fun-filled activities. If weekly is too much pressure, determine a monthly family game night, movie night, craft night, or other type of night that fits your family best. Let each child offer their choice of activity and take turns implementing. PRIORITIZE EATING DINNER TOGETHER I know eating dinner as a family every night is often unattainable. With that being said, when families dine together, it helps them handle the stresses of daily life. It’s a nice time to debrief the day and talk things through as a unit. To get your kids chatting, play Two Highs, One Low—ask them to name two amazing things that happened that day and express one thing they found challenging.

myhyperlocalnews.com

PLAY HOOKY We get sick days, right? Why not take a “well day” and do something fun occasionally? When I was young, my mom would let me play hooky every so often—we’d do something sporadic, and it meant the world to me. Life moves fast and even kids need time to reboot, and sometimes a simple day off and quality time does the trick. TAKE THE TRIP Instill in your kids to value making memories over monetary things. The pandemic has reminded our family to take advantage of time and live life to the fullest, and so we’ve taken every opportunity to travel. People don’t take trips; trips take people and exposing your kids to exploration and adventure will only shape them into more cultured, wellrounded individuals. PAY IT FORWARD Make a list of various ways your family wants to help others this year, then determine a plan to make them happen. One idea is to ask your kids to choose some toys they’ve outgrown to donate to a shelter— it’s simple, but the lessons learned are so important. GET ACTIVE Exercise is the most cliché New Year’s resolution, so give it a fresh family-infused approach. For older kids, decide to train for a 5K together or do regular hikes in your area. Bike ride to lunch on the week-

ends or simply play catch with your kids in the yard. Lay a strong foundation of making exercise fun. UNPLUG Decide to digitally detach during specific times, such as for dinner or certain times during the evening. Put the phone down and focus on being 100% present for yourself and your family. It’s amazing how rewarding it is to have a conversation with actual eye contact! In other words, connect by disconnecting. HONOR YOUR CHILD’S INDIVIDUALITY I have three young boys and they’re all very different. While one is creative and crafty, the other is all about sports, and my toddler just loves to play. Make sure to get time with each of your kids individually, honoring their interests even if they’re not necessarily yours. Spending that special quality time will only strengthen your bond and help boost your child’s self-esteem. Nadine Bubeck is a former news anchor turned all things mama. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal

IN THEATERS House Of Gucci The story of how Patrizia Reggiani fell in and out of love with—and then murdered—her husband and heir to the Gucci company, Maurizio. Ridley Scott can add comedy to his list of genres he can nail. House Of Gucci is a satire about the rich and how insecure they are, and how easily any taste of greed can corrupt. This is complemented by clever filmmaking choices and the cast. The performances range from chewing as much scenery as possible (Lady Gaga and Jared Leto) and playing it totally straight (Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons), and the contrast works well. It’s also nice to see how Scott gives this film the expensive look it needs, filled with overindulgence. A funny film, even if it feels bloated, but one could argue that fits for the film. BENEDETTA A nun begins a forbidden affair while

receiving visions from who she believes is Jesus. It’s hard to explain something like Benedetta without putting people off. It’s well done, with Paul Verhoeven making the most of the explicit subtext and visuals to support it. The actors convince you of their madness, hypocrisy, and desire, and Verhoeven loves to make you hate them in all their explicit glory. But it’s subject matter is one that will turn off and offend, or even just simply disgust. It’s a movie that one must approach cautiously—it’s not unrated for nothing.

ON NETFLIX The Power of The Dog A man begins a game of psychological war with his brother’s new wife. Silence can be killer, and Jane Campion, in her first movie in 12 years, uses it perfectly. Each third of the film focuses on a different character and how they affect everyone, and slowly but surely, their personalities change and deteriorate. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are the standouts here, both

24 • January 2022 • NORTH PHOENIX NEWS

strangely swapping personalities over the course of the film. The dark tone contrasts well with the lovely but still barren western frontier presented. Jonny Greenwood continues to impress with his tense score. Quite an accomplishment.

ON AMC+ Silent Night A family gathers for what may be their final Christmas dinner. Silent Night, for most of its runtime, is great. The dark humor mixed with sincere family drama is a great showcase for firsttime director Camille Griffin. How the various cast members show their emotions, whether subdued or outward, makes these characters real. Griffin’s script also does a great job at hinting at the main plot without telling us for the first twenty minutes. But the film unfortunately falls apart in its last ten minutes, rushing through its conclusion, our characters collapsing suddenly, and a final moment that is incredibly sudden and unearned plays out. It

almost ruins what could have been a new holiday classic. It’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it to not stick the landing.
