Researchers in Scottsdale are recruiting participants for a study on potential neurological effects of long COVID.

As we continue to study the long-term effects of COVID-19, post-infectious complications commonly

A clinical research study, conducted by CND Life Sciences and based in Scottsdale, is seeking Arizona residents to participate in research that analyzes important biomarkers in the skin for neurological insights related to long COVID. City News Waymo teen accounts offer peace of mind for families

LEARNING TO DRIVE HAS LONG BEEN THE MARQUEE MILESTONE FOR AMERICAN TEENAGERS COMING OF AGE. The freedom and self-reliance that comes with driving to school, hanging out with friends, and running errands for the family can be truly life-changing. With that newfound independence also comes new safety risks for families, as motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens.

FIT FOR FAMILIES

We recently offered early access to Waymo teen accounts for Phoenix families, allowing us to hear directly how the new offering may fit into their busy lives.

In addition to the safety risk, there are many other barriers to reliable teen transportation, including age, busy parents, vehicle costs, and more. Waymo offers a unique solution for families to keep their teens safe, help combat FOMO, and provide much-needed independence for those navigating adolescence — welcome to Waymo teen accounts!

Starting now, teens ages 14-17 in metro Phoenix can travel independently with Waymo when linked to a parent or guardian’s account. Parents of eligible teens can use their own Waymo account to invite their teen into the program, pairing them together. Once activated, teens can hail fully autonomous rides independently across 315 square miles of The Valley.

Waymo teen accounts have protocols in place to offer peace of mind and accountability for families. Speciallytrained Rider Support agents are available to assist teens during rides and can loop in their parents if needed. Teens can also share their trip status with their parents for real-time updates on their progress, and parents receive all ride receipts.

“We’ve been using the Waymo service for a long, long time,” said Chandler parent Crystal Whitlatch. “With Waymo teen accounts, it’s been a really great experience to give Mikaylee some autonomy and not make her be so dependent on family members to drive my teen around.”

For families like Crystal’s, having access to Waymo provides autonomy in a number of ways. Crystal lives with epilepsy, which means she cannot access a driver’s license to drive herself or her family where they need to go. Waymo has played a critical role in her family’s transportation needs for years, but this newfound freedom for her daughter has been a welcome change. Mikaylee shared, “It’s convenient because it allows me to ride to the places I want. Before, if I didn’t have a ride, I’d have to miss it.”

Beyond the FOMO, teens traveling independently can help alleviate some of the transportation burden that so often falls on busy parents. Phoenix parent Kseniya Schminke shared, “I’m a single mom — my husband passed away — so it’s all me. I think of Waymo as my partner to help get everyone where they need to go.”

Waymo teen accounts are initially only being offered to our riders in Metro Phoenix, but we intend to offer teen accounts in other cities in the future. If you’re interested in signing up your teen, visit waymo.com/teens to learn more.

North Scottsdale’s Zamora Acupuncture Offers

Hope & Pain relief for Back Pain and Nerve Pain

Sufferers, Even After Surgeries

Even after undergoing unsuccessful back surgery, there’s a beacon of hope in North Scottsdale: Zamora Acupuncture.

Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a Doctor of Acupuncture, is compassionate and loves what she does. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Dr. Zamora later earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Acupuncture and is board certified through the NCCAOM.

She combines evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with FDA-approved modern technology to help decrease pain levels. Many of her patients have undergone surgery, tried multiple medications, physical therapy, and injections, but still suffer from conditions such as back pain, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatic pain.

We sat down with Dr. Zamora to learn more about Zamora Acupuncture.

SNN: What services do you offer that are unique?

KZ: I provide services for people who have been in pain for a long time. People come in with back pain, peripheral neuropathy, sciatic pain, and more. I provide evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern technology that has been FDA approved to decrease pain. I use my experience in healthcare to provide exceptional care. Often, the patients that I see have already tried everything else. They have done surgery, tried various medications, physical therapy, injections, and more.

Many people think they are too far gone in terms of their pain. In many cases, this can lead to depression because they are unable to get out and enjoy life.

I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more pain-free life.

SNN: Is there hope for someone that’s had back surgery and still in pain?

KZ: Yes. I have treated many patients with pain after surgery successfully. We call this Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). The reality is that not every surgery is successful. Many times, patients have had multiple surgeries without success or with partial success.

SNN: If someone is not eligible for surgery due to weight or age, can you help them?

KZ: Absolutely. Acupuncture is a pain management option for these types of patients. I treat patients of all sizes and ages. Once pain levels decrease with acupuncture, many patients become more active and are able to lose weight easier. So that’s a very positive outcome! Additionally, with natural aging, there is no reason to suffer in pain. The treatments I provide can help decrease pain, even in cases of severe arthritis.

If you are suffering in pain, schedule a new patient visit today. It’s never too late to start your journey to better health.  Zamora Acupuncture is located at 17787 N. Perimeter Dr., Suite A101, in Scottsdale. Learn more at  www.AZacu.com or call us at 480300-5767.

Hello Neighbor!

MY NAME: Zach Costa

HOME ZIP CODE: 85086

I’VE LIVED IN PHOENIX FOR 11 YEARS, AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… I love our pocket of North Phoenix because of the family aspect the community provides. All three of my kids have either grown up or are growing up here. It is an amazing place to raise a family because you are surrounded by other families doing the same.

BUSINESS NAME AND LOCATION: Valley Roofing & Repair, 4010 N. 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85017; 623-250-ROOF

WHAT I DO: At Valley Roofing & Repair, which I founded earlier this year with fellow industry veterans, our mission is to deliver reliable, high-quality roofing solutions for both homes and businesses. We are 100% locally owned and operated. We started this company with a passion for problem-solving and a deep respect for the trade. Having spent years learning the ins and outs of roofing in Arizona’s

unique climate, we realized the need for a roofing company that truly puts the customer first, doesn’t cut corners, and has an impeccable focus on quality. Our story is about building trust — one roof at a time. We’re proud to be a part of this community, and we look forward to continuing to serve Arizona with the same care and dedication that got us started.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE

INCLUDES… My days are usually twofold. The first part is all about Valley Roofing & Repair. As a new business, we are building our team and clients right along with the best roofs in Arizona. This means I always make myself available for all of our project managers while meeting with my co-founders on development, leads, billing, human resources, marketing, and everything else that goes into being a responsible small business owner. As an experienced roofing veteran, I still spend time in the field as well, working with clients from across Arizona both on their residential and commercial projects. And then, of course, during monsoon season, I am 24/7 available to help assess all the damage and see how we can help FAST.

The second part of my day is 100% focused on family. I am dedicated to watching and coaching my kids in whatever sport they are participating in that day. Whether it’s on the baseball field or basketball court, I’m there. My wife and I are proud to encourage them to always be one day better than they were the day before.

MY FAMILY IS… My most valuable asset. In a lot of ways, my wife and kids helped mold me to the man I am today. I am eternally grateful for them.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Nice underwear and socks. Long story, but two clothing items that spare no expense.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… Really tough to just give one answer on this topic. It really depends on how I’m feeling. Going to go with “Man On Fire” with Denzel Washington. Still might shed a tear or two in the ending.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A professional baseball player. My grandpa played in the minor leagues, a pitcher. It’s in my blood.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… To be honest, I don’t think I would ever put myself out there like that. I’m too reserved. I do love music and have a wide range of genres that I enjoy rotating from. If I had to choose one song, it would probably be “Return of The Mack” – Mark Morrison. Good luck catching me doing it though…

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My stepson, Michael. Coming into his life has been the most lifechanging experience that I have ever had. Watching him grow and mature as an individual and an athlete has been one of the most rewarding processes I have ever endured.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Probably something sassy coming from my 6-year-old daughter.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… Any day where I have all three kids and wife together. Whether we have the side-by-sides and ATVs at the dunes, are at the ball fields, or just at home hanging out.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Phoenix Children’s. My close friends’ sons both received a heart transplant there. I’ve seen firsthand the impact they can have.

MY LIFE IS… Between Valley Roofing & Repair and having three extremely active kids, my life is a strange form of controlled chaos. I’m not sure what I would do without it.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… My wife, Christie.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… It is a three-way tie. Put others before yourself. Lead from the front. You have to give in order to receive.

Community St. Joseph the Worker Receives Lowe’s Hometowns Project Grant to Renovate Transitional Home for Women

St. Joseph the Worker (The Worker), a Phoenix-based nonprofit that helps people overcome barriers to employment and achieve self-sufficiency, has proudly been selected as one of 100 community-nominated organizations nationwide to receive a 2025 Lowe’s Hometowns project grant. Now in its fourth year, Lowe’s Hometowns is the company’s five-year, $100 million commitment to repairing and restoring millions of square feet of community space.

The funding will support the renovation of 1125 W. Fillmore, known in the community as MOM’s House, a transitional residence offering safe housing and job-readiness support for women reentering society after incarceration.

Operated through The Worker’s Workforce Villages Reentry (WVR) Program, MOM’s House plays a vital role in helping participants stabilize their lives, secure employment, and successfully reintegrate into the community.

“This home represents so much more than four walls. It’s a second chance for women who are ready to rewrite their stories,” said Carrie Masters, CEO of The Worker. “We’ve seen women completely transform their lives through this program, gaining stability, confidence and the tools they need to truly reenter society. Thanks to Lowe’s, we’ll be able to expand this life-changing work and continue to prove that a person’s past does not define their future.”

The WVR program was born from a partnership between The Worker, the Televerde Foundation and Andre House to meet the urgent needs of women leaving Perryville Prison. Participants begin with 30-45 days of structured transitional housing and wraparound job support. Once employed full-time at $18/hour or more, they graduate into The Worker’s Workforce Housing program, saving 80% of their income and completing financial literacy and meal prep training. As of July 2025, 17 of the program’s first 21 participants have successfully transitioned into their own housing at market rate, an 81% success rate that far exceeds national averages. Today, 9 women are actively participating in the program. In addition to national funding, Lowe’s red vest associates

will contribute to the renovation through volunteer service days, transforming the space into a welcoming, empowering home for future program participants. Lowe’s Hometowns projects nationwide aim to expand capacity for food pantries, improve transitional housing and revitalize parks and gathering spaces, reflecting a belief in building stronger communities through hands-on service.

What sets them apart is a commitment to quality service and a remarkable story.

The story begins with Robert Gracia, the owner of Arizaz Heating and Cooling. Gracia’s journey

is nothing short of inspirational. After serving time in prison and being released in 2018, he was determined to become a productive member of society. Armed with trade certifications, a supportive family, a strong faith, and a desire for a better life, he embarked on a path to success.

Gracia’s journey to becoming a successful HVAC business owner started with his employment at Alliance Plumbing Service and Repair. He quickly moved up the ranks and transitioned into the HVAC mechanical business. Estate Planning with LLCs: Protecting Your Business and Your Legacy

In our office, Libby and I see a growing number of clients with LLCs who own businesses or have rental properties to protect. Some clients come into an estate planning consultation thinking their estate plan is a totally separate matter from their LLC, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

Liability and litigation lurk around every corner, so the legal protections provided by an LLC are crucial. The next step that many people overlook is making sure that their LLC interest avoids probate upon their passing. LLCs are just another piece of the puzzle when we create estate plans for our clients.

First and foremost, what is an LLC?

LLC is short for “limited liability company,” and it is a type of business entity that offers liability protections for its owners (called “members”). The idea is that if a claim or lawsuit arose from the LLC, the members’ assets are protected from liability. Likewise, if a claim or lawsuit arose from a member’s personal actions, the LLC’s assets receive protection. LLCs are excellent vehicles for gaining some protection from lawsuits while maintaining flexibility and simplicity in managing the LLC’s assets.

Why create an LLC?

Typically, our clients have LLCs for their small businesses or for holding rental and investment properties. Rental properties, especially short-term rentals like Airbnb, have no shortage of accidents waiting to happen. Creating an LLC to own the rental property can protect personal assets from lawsuits. On the small business side, creating an LLC gives your business more structure and credibility.

How does this intertwine with estate planning?

Owning an LLC is just like owning any other asset. Under Arizona law, an interest in an LLC is treated as personal property. If someone with an LLC dies with only a will, or no estate plan at all, that LLC interest could get tangled up in probate with all their other assets. Creating a trust can help avoid probate for your LLC and other assets, but only if the trust is properly funded.

We have a few different ways to make sure an LLC interest avoids probate.

• First, we can assign membership to a client’s trust. When a trust is the member of the LLC, that makes the trust the owner of that LLC as well. If the trust owns the LLC, then the LLC can avoid probate under the terms of the trust.

• Another way for the LLC to bypass probate is by using a transfer on death designation. That is a simple document, effective only upon the owner’s death, that transfers the LLC interest to the designated beneficiaries automatically without the need for probate. Members choose this option over an assignment to their trust depending on the LLC’s tax treatment.

• The final method, which is more common in LLCs with multiple members or business partners, is to provide for succession planning in an operating agreement for the LLC. An operating agreement is the primary governing document for an LLC, setting forth the basic rules governing the members and management. In addition to establishing ground rules and strengthening the LLC’s legitimacy and liability protections, the operating agreement can include provisions for what happens to a member’s interest upon their passing.

What are some mistakes to avoid?

The last thing you want to do is leave yourself needlessly exposed to liability from your business or rental property. You can protect yourself by creating an LLC with a strong operating agreement. However, don’t assume that’s where your work ends. You don’t want your loved ones dealing with probate court for an asset that was created to make your lives easier. Don’t forget to include your LLCs in your estate plan using one of the methods we covered here.

How can we help?

Our office has recently expanded its offerings to include business formation services alongside our longstanding estate planning, probate, and trust administration practices. If you’ve

been thinking about creating an estate plan or if you’ve been curious about setting up an LLC, we can help you accomplish both goals! Even if you already have an LLC, we can make sure your LLC records are up to date and ensure the liability protections are maintained. Most of our clients with LLCs do not have operating agreements in place yet, so they are not receiving as much asset protection as they could be. Once we’re sure your LLC is in good shape, we can discuss the proper strategy for helping your interest in the LLC avoid probate.

If you’re interested in advice about your own situation, give us a call to schedule a consultation. We would be happy to talk through your options for protecting your business and your legacy!

Health

In 30 Minutes I Had a Plan for My Knee Pain that Didn’t Require Surgery or Pills

“Iwas losing sleep. I couldn’t get comfortable at night and would wake up constantly. That was the most frustrating part. Everything I was told to do was not helping… the pain was only getting worse.”

Nathan, 46, came to us after exhausting every option outside of surgery. A marathon runner, energetic entrepreneur, and father to two boys, Nathan took pride in his active lifestyle and was determined to find a solution for his knee pain.

Ice packs and heat compresses were no longer helpful, and relying on pain pills was not an option he wanted to take. He committed to physical therapy for several weeks with little impact, tried dry needling and cortisone injections without success, and was ultimately told by multiple doctors to stop all activity that aggravated his knee. Nathan had done everything his insurance allowed but was still stuck at square one.

WHAT THE OTHER DOCTORS MISSED…

Nathan had fallen into what we call “The Gap” — where insurance-based care cycles with no end in sight, surgery isn’t an option, and waiting for the pain to get worse seems like the only choice. Most providers only look for what they know how to treat. But our comprehensive ‘Deep Dive’ approach and expertise allowed us to bridge that gap for Nathan.

Using a detailed pain profile, 57-point knee inspection, MSK ultrasound scan, and diagnostic injection, we were able to confirm Nathan’s knee injury and quickly develop a targeted treatment plan to heal the damaged tissue.

A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION, NO SURGERY OR PILLS

In just 4 weeks, the pain improved significantly, allowing Nathan to regain his range of motion, sleep soundly at night, and return to the sport he loves:

“My body is performing better than before, and I even signed up for a Ragnar race now that I’m back to running again — something I didn’t think I would ever be able to do! If you’re tired of the ‘just hope for the best’ from many in the medical field, and want a complete set of options, Ethos Integrative Medicine is the place to go.”

YOUR NEXT STEP: THE DEEP DIVE FOR A PAIN-FREE KNEE

Thrifty Shoppers Find Deals, Steals and Good Feels

National Thrift Shop Day is Aug. 17, but any bargain hunter will tell you: EVERY day is a good day to snap up a deal. Some of the best steals in town can be found at The White Dove Thrift Shoppes in Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale and Mesa, which were just voted “Best Boutique Thrifting” by Phoenix Magazine readers. All four locations boast a huge selection of one-of-a-kind merchandise — from collectible books and art; eclectic housewares and all styles of furniture; to jewelry and fashion, both vintage and trendy.

“I always spot something marvelous,” says Pat Latham, who considers herself an experienced thrifter. “And prices here are the best. Look at this really unique platter… isn’t it beautiful?” She flashes a colorful iridescent flower-shaped tray and confesses, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure there’s more stuff here that I simply must take home!”

Many shoppers intentionally patronize the White Dove stores because proceeds support Hospice of the Valley patients and families in need. As the only nonprofit hospice in Maricopa County, the agency cares for all, regardless of financial circumstances. Last year, the stores contributed $2.5 million to help ensure no one is turned away. That’s quite an amazing feat, given some items are sold for just a dollar. The stores also have a dedicated volunteer force waiting on customers, creating displays and handling donations that are deeply meaningful to families.

“We are giving back because we’re grateful for the care my father received,” says shopper Peter Eickelberg. “Hospice of the Valley did such a great job — they even had a volunteer come to play catch with my dad when he was still feeling pretty good.”

Wendy Gilbert remembers taking her father to the White Dove before he received hospice care. “It was like a treasure hunt. He was so excited because it was a trip down memory lane for

him, finding things from his era. We found it interesting to see what people had collected in their lives.”

It’s fun to speculate about these fascinating treasures. Who used to own the life-size cutout of Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe? Who painted the giant fox who looks so real it could dash away? Who donated the heavy metal goblets that bear an inscription from Susie? Did someone actually wear the hand carved wooden clogs?

“Everything has a story,” says White Dove volunteer Janet Barkley, who has waited on customers at the Scottsdale store for the last two years. “Some of the items are so precious. It makes me wonder, was this a gift? Was it bought for a special occasion? I think about the life of that object continuing on. And continuing on with love — because don’t we all buy things we love?”

So rest assured, whether it’s some rockin’ platform sandals, a pristine collection of Jadeite cups and saucers, a gilded gold tea service, highly sought-after Tommy Bahama glassware or those perfect palm tree-embossed dessert plates you’ve been looking for — there’s something for everyone… and it only gets better when you glance at the price tag.

In honor of National Thrift Shop Day, all four White Dove locations will be offering a 50% discount storewide on Saturday, Aug. 16 (some exclusions apply). And every week, there are sales and promotions to entice shoppers, including a Summer Discount Savings Passport, 25% off every Monday for seniors 55 and older and 25% off every Saturday for teachers, students, first responders and military personnel.

Thank you for shopping, donating and volunteering at The White Dove Thrift Shoppes. For more information, visit WhiteDoveThrift.org.

“If You’ve Been Told There’s Nothing You Can Do About Hand Arthritis… Read This.”

and author of “Solving the Root Cause of Pain” Frustrated With Hand Pain That’s Holding You Back? You’re Not Alone.

If you’ve been told that hand arthritis is something you “just have to live with,” and your only real options are pills, creams, or compression gloves — you’re not alone.

But a new non-drug treatment is now helping people regain strength, mobility, and relief — without relying on fixes that don’t work or giving up the activities they love.

Many people who come to our clinic have already tried all the usual solutions. But the pain lingers. Tasks like opening jars, steering a car, or writing a list feel frustrating — not because they’re hard, but because they should be easy.

Why Pills, Creams, and Gloves Only Scratch the Surface.

Most treatments only manage symptoms. At best, you get short-term relief. At worst, you’re stuck cycling through products and pills that don’t solve the problem.

But for many, a breakthrough therapy is offering real results — even when nothing else has worked.

What

I Learned After Being Told I Had Arthritis in My Hands.

Years ago, I was diagnosed with arthritis and told the same thing: “You’ll just have to live with it. Here is some Celebrex.” My grip was weak, my hands ached, and my ability to do my job was slipping.

Later, I found the real issue was mold toxicity — not joint degeneration. But I’ll never forget the frustration of being dismissed, handed pills, and left to figure it out on my own.

That’s why I built a clinic that looks deeper and helps people find answers — and for those with hand arthritis, we now offer something that may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

This New Technology is Giving People Their Grip (and Their Lives) Back.

We’ve introduced a non-invasive regenerative therapy that works by stimulating

circulation, reducing inflammation, and activating natural tissue repair — without drugs, creams, or surgery.

Shockwave therapy, a tool long used in Europe and elite sports medicine, combined with the right treatment plan and strategy is helping people return to work, hobbies, and daily tasks without that familiar ache.

“Life changing!. I have struggled with arthritis in my fingers for a number of years, no treatments helped. After 5 treatments, I now have full range of motion in my index finger and it functions normally with no pain. It truly is amazing!” — Mike Covert, Scottsdale

“I haven’t been able to move my thumb like this in - I don’t know how long! I cannot believe how well this has worked” — Laine Byrum, Scottsdale

Who It’s Helping — And How Fast People Are Seeing Results.

This treatment isn’t for everyone. But it’s helped many people who:

•Have had arthritis in their hands or fingers for over 3 months

•Still have movement, but pain or stiffness limits daily life

•Want to avoid the pills, creams, gloves, and injections cycle

•Are proactive, solution-seeking, and tired of being told to “just live with it”

Some patients start to notice improvements in as little as 2–3 sessions. Others see steady, compounding relief over several weeks.

What matters is that it’s real, measurable progress — not another bandaid.

“If You’re Tired of ‘Just Deal With It’ — And You’re Looking For Real Relief — This is For You

You’ve already tried the creams, the pills, and the gadgets.

You’ve done what the experts told you — and you’re still looking for answers.

If you’re ready for a different outcome — on your terms — this is the next step. Every Week You Wait is a Week Lost…

If you’re tired of struggling to grip, write, or open a jar without pain — don’t keep putting it off. Call 480-482-0651 now and ask if this breakthrough treatment is right for you.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

Superman

As he comes into his own as a hero, Kal-El faces the struggles of being a symbol for good while staying close to his grounded life.

It’s hard not to like James Gunn’s latest, particularly with how perfectly cast his actors are. Each one finds just the right mix of lovable, cool or hateable personalities that fall right in step with the comic book characters we all remember. The story itself feels like the best version of a mini-comic arc. Following a sort of week-in-the-life structure that’s well balanced with humor and heart. There were times the movie leaned a bit too heavily on humor, partially caused by Gunn’s direction. If I could give it one criticism it would be in Gunn’s vision.

This movie begs for more classical and nuanced photography, not the constant movement and over the top camerawork. But, the cast is too enjoyable and the script is exciting enough from both a personal story standpoint & a greater universe standpoint to dislike the film. It’s the first DC attempt since the original Aquaman that feels like it understood the source material while also serving as a good moviegoing experience.

Jurassic World Rebirth

To find a cure for many of the world’s diseases, a group of mercenaries head into a dino-infested island to secure DNA samples while surviving the elements.

Sometimes, you can tell when a movie is made to make a release date while also taking advantage of a popular IP. The screenplay was obviously written quickly based on how padded out the final product is. It includes an entirely useless subplot centered around a family that if you removed from the movie nothing would change. While several major aspects are underused including a new mutant dinosaur that simply seems to come and go. Unfortunately, you can even feel that lack of effort from what should be an amazing cast of actors. Gareth Edwards portrays little to none of his distinct documentary-like nature from his previous movies, likely stemming from the rushed nature of the movie.

DP, John Mathieson provides us with some of his most disappointing work of his career. How much can you expect from a script premise that begins with a Snickers’ wrapper. There’s no thought or care to be found in film craft here, just dinosaurs and annoying humans.

F1

A former racing star who never was, is asked to help revive his former teammate’s collapsing Formula One team.

The combination of complex craft and simple storytelling found in Joseph Kosinski’s way of filmmaking is what makes his movies so enjoyable. “F1” is packed with a cast that fill each of their roles perfectly. From Brad Pitt’s

zen-like Sonny Hayes to Damson Idris’ arrogant but devoted Joshua and Javier Bardem’s likable but no B.S. Ruben. But of course, this is a racing movie and none of that matters if the track scenes aren’t brilliant. Fortunately for us, Kosinski and DP Claudio Miranda show true artistic prowess with a terrific level of realism that make the audience feel like the characters are flying. There have been many racing movies in the past and the film could have easily come and gone with little more than a sputter in filmography history. Instead we were given a reminder of how something familiar can still feel new in the right hands.

28 Years Later

A young man faces the reality of his infection ridden world to save those he loves.

Danny Boyle & Alex Garland smartly don’t go for a repeat of past plots in the return to the world they made 23 years ago. Rather, they present something of an epic nature versus nurture and coming to terms with death. It’s as tragic as it is thrilling, the duo pull no punches in how sudden things can go sideways regardless of how well you believe you are prepared. Still, like Days, the script asks viewer to see hope in the face of destruction.

Alfie Williams is a revelation in a cast filled A-listers that are still giving their all. Finding a balance between innocence and having to grow up too fast. To top it all off, there is some of

the most stunning photography of any film I’ve seen this year.
