DON’T MISS THIS! 4TH ANNUAL SHEABORHOOD FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS By Molly Cerreta Smith

ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS ABOUT THE “SHEABORHOOD” IS ITS GROWING COMMUNITY EFFORTS THAT ARE FOCUSED ON FUN! With neighborhood-centric events like the North 32nd Costume Party which just celebrated its fifth anniversary this past year and the upcoming Sheaborhood Festival of Lights, which is hosting its fourth annual event this December 13. Developed by local Realtor Allison Barnett, who also created the North 32nd Costume Party community event, the Annual Sheaborhood Festival of Lights is a neighborhood night bike ride holiday light tour that celebrates the lights of the holiday season that are showcased throughout the Sheaborhood. This year’s event begins at 32 Shea, one of the Sheaborhood’s beloved locally owned restaurants located on the corner of 32nd Street and Shea at 10626 N. 32nd Street. The night will be kicked off with happy hour and free hot chocolate for the kids, being offered from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Starting at 6:00 p.m., cyclists start lining up in the drive-

through of the restaurant to hit the streets as a group, accompanied by a police escort for safety. Participants are encouraged to follow bike safety (especially since the event takes place after dark) including wearing a helmet - and they are also invited to deck out their bikes with festive lights!

Throughout the hour-long ride, participants will bike through the Sheaborhood to enjoy the amazing holiday lights and get into the holiday spirit! At 7:30 p.m., participants will return to 32 Shea for extended happy hour and more free hot cocoa for the kids (because who can get enough hot cocoa this time of year!?) At 8:00 p.m., Lovecraft Ale House, Bottle Shop and Smoke Kitchen, located at 3128 East Cactus Road, hosts an after-party to keep the festivities going all night long. Neighbors that reside in the area are invited to do their part to spread holiday cheer by sitting out to watch the riders go by, cheer them on or even offer them cider, cocoa, cookies or other goodies as they ride by. MAKING WRONG-WAY SIGNS MORE NOTICEABLE – IN A BIG WAY By Doug Nintzel / ADOT Communications

EFFORTS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CRASHES CAUSED BY OFTEN-IMPAIRED WRONG-WAY DRIVERS INVOLVE A VARIETY OF COUNTERMEASURES. They include increasing the size and visibility of wrong-way signs at state highway interchanges.

Those upgrades received a major boost in the form of a $2.1 million project to install new larger wrong way signage at more than 140 interchanges, along with other improvements, along several Phoenixarea freeways.

If you drive in the area, you’re much more likely to notice the larger “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs at the top of freeway off-ramps in the Valley. Not only are they bigger, they also represent updated national standards by being located lower to the ground and thus hopefully more in line with a driver’s line of vision. Yes, that’s about making them easier to see so that a wrong-way driver might not travel down that off-ramp. The signs along exit ramps are not the only changes that crews, working mostly at night, made as part of this project. They also added many more of the large, white arrows that are

located on the pavement of exit ramps. Those arrows point in the “right” direction of travel, as another measure designed to get the attention of a driver heading the wrong way.

ADOT has been installing larger and more visible wrong way signs not only along Phoenix-area freeways but also at highway interchanges across the state over the last several years.

One other upgrade was the installation of dozens of large “Wrong Way” signs, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet, installed above the left lanes of freeways. They’re on the backs of bridges and other overhead structures and you, traveling the right way, may have noticed a few of them if you’ve glanced to the left across the median.

This particular project has focused on sections of interstates 10 and 17, US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the East Valley, State Route 51 as well as Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Loop 303 in the West Valley.

Those noticeable signs, facing in the wrong direction, are above the freeway left lanes because wrongway drivers tend to travel in those lanes. More than two dozen of these signs were first installed along I-17 in Phoenix in 2017 in association with ADOT’s first-in-the-nation thermal camera wrong-way vehicle alert system.

It remains important to note that more noticeable signs and other countermeasures we’ve mentioned can’t prevent someone, especially someone who’s impaired, from getting behind the wheel and becoming a wrong-way driver. The signs are big. But stopping impaired driving would make a life-saving difference in an even bigger way. KARSTEN’S ACE HARDWARE LENDS A HAND TO ARIZONA HELPING HANDS By Molly Cerreta Smith

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY… AND ALSO TO LEND A HAND TO THOSE IN NEED TO MAKE THEIR HOLIDAY A LITTLE MORE CHEERFUL. David Karsten, president of multiple Karsten’s Ace Hardware locations around the valley, is doing just that this season. Throughout the month of December, Karsten’s Ace 32nd Street and Shea location will be collecting donations for Arizona Helping Hands. Arizona Helping Hands is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 by Paul Donaldson and his wife Kathleen. To date, the organization is the largest provider of essential needs for foster care children in Arizona. Items that are often distributed through Arizona Helping Hands include hygiene and personal care products, diapers and wipes, beds and cribs, new or gently used

clothing and even safety equipment for new foster parents.

During holiday seasons, the organization also hosts toy drives to collect gifts for foster children that might not otherwise receive a present under the tree. This year marks the non-profit’s 21st Annual Toy Drive. Items for donation include toys for infants to young teens through the age of 14. Requested age-appropriate items include board books, toddler toys, blocks, musical toys, Duplo sets, Sesame Street items, craft kits, magic kits, Paw Patrol items, remote control cars, dolls (including all ethnicities), super-hero themed items, princess themed items, dress up sets, sports balls, DIY kits, journals and sketch pads, young adult coloring books, jewelry making kits, make-up kits, nail polish and nail polish art kits and more. It is requested that no

play guns, Nerf guns, archery sets or anything that depicts violence be donated. The goal of Arizona Helping Hands is to collect 30,000 toys this year.

In doing his part to help the organization, Karsten is raising awareness for Arizona Helping Hands’ 21st Annual Toy Drive, and will be collecting donations through the end of the month. “During this season of giving, we feel it is important to bring awareness to some of the local groups that work hard all year to support the community,” says

Karsten. “We pride ourselves as being the local neighborhood hardware store, and feel that it is very important to support our local charities, like Arizona Helping Hands. This event is a great opportunity to do just that.”

In addition to the month-long donation efforts, Karsten’s Ace Hardware located at 10624 N. 32nd Street, is hosting a two-day Wrap it in Red Garden Party on Saturday, December 14, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 15, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with food, refreshments, music, product demonstrations and more.

HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS - PARADISE VALLEY EMERGENCY FOOD BANK SINCE 1986, OUR NEIGHBORS AT THE PARADISE VALLEY EMERGENCY FOOD BANK (PVEFB), LOCATED AT 32ND ST AND SHEA, HAVE BEEN WORKING DILIGENTLY TO PROVIDE WELL-BALANCED MEALS TO THE COMMUNITY RESIDING IN THE PVSCHOOLS BOUNDARIES WHOSE INCOMES FALL BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL.

SCHOOL FOOD DRIVES Throughout the school year, student councils at PV schools hold food drives to collect nonperishable items that are then donated to the PVEFB. During the 2018-19 school year, PVSchools food drives accounted for more than 50,000 pounds of food, representing 35.6 percent of all food donations for the year.

Throughout the years, PVEFB has expanded programs and services for children who attend PVSchools to include Weekend Food4Kids Backpack Program and the School Nurse Program. In turn, students at PV schools have held canned food drives to help support PVEFB’s community efforts. Furthermore, each year, PVSchools holds the Empty Bowls in Paradise event in which all proceeds from the event are donated to the PVEFB.

NEED ASSISTANCE – EMERGENCY FOOD ASSIST PROGRAM For individuals and families who require assistance, the PVEFB provides wholesome and nourishing meals to those who reside within the boundaries of the PVSchools. Families with minor children living within the household needing assistance can receive up to eight food boxes per year, seniors (over 65 years old) can receive 12 boxes per year, and adults 18 years or older can receive four boxes per year.

WEEKEND FOOD4KIDS BACKPACK PROGRAM In 2008, the PVEFB saw a need in the community to create a Weekend Food4Kids Backpack Program to help feed 100 students who attended Title I schools. These students receive breakfast and lunch at school during the week and may not have access to healthy, easy to make meals during the weekend. During the 2019-20 school year, this program will provide weekend meals for approximately 783 PV students. The food provided in the backpacks is intended to offer breakfast, lunch, and snack items to children for the weekend to replace the food provided by the school during the week.

During the last five years, the PVEFB has provided its neighbors with 56,199 emergency food assists, including 22,886 to children. HOW YOU CAN HELP THE PVEFB There are a few ways in which you can help the emergency food bank, including donating non-

perishable food items, volunteering, or making a monetary donation that qualifies for a tax credit. Non-perishable Food Donations – Food banks, including the PV Emergency Food Bank, rely on community members and organizations to provide donations throughout the year, not just during the holidays. In addition to canned food items, the PV Emergency Food Bank is also in need of hot and cold cereals, juices, dry milk, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, baby food, soap, toilet paper, diapers, and personal care items. Volunteer – You can help the PVEFB by volunteering. Volunteers help collect food and distribute food, stock shelves, and help answer the phone. Monetary Donations – Monetary contributions help the PVEFB pay for rent and utility costs in addition to food items that are not donated. They accept checks or credit card payments through PayPal. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO I-17 ON-RAMP CLOSURES AT PINNACLE PEAK ROAD

WITH THE SEASON OF HOLIDAY TRAVEL UPON US, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO CHECK YOUR ROUTES BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT ON A ROAD TRIP OR VACATION TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON. In addition to paying extra-close attention on the road while driving due to more travelers and an influx of out of towners that may not be as familiar with our roads, it’s important to check construction and closures to either plan for extra time or route a detour. The I-17 has been experiencing closures at the on-ramp of Pinnacle Peak Road and according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the southbound I-17 on-ramp will remain closed around-the-clock through the evening of Sunday, December 22. Additionally, the northbound 1-17 exit ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will be closed around the clock through Monday, January 6, 2020. These closures will further allow the continuing reconstruction of the I-17 traffic interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. According to its website, during these closures, ADOT will temporarily reconfigure portions of the north- and southbound I-17 frontage roads between Pinnacle Peak and Deer Valley roads while ramps at I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road are reconstructed. The temporary reconfigurations below are scheduled to remain in place through 5

a.m. Monday, January 6, 2020: • The southbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary twoway road between Premier RV and Self-Storage and Adobe Drive. • The northbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Williams Drive and the roadway south of Adams Traditional Academy/north of the Phoenix Metro RV Park.

Work to reconstruct the Interstate 17 traffic interchanges at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads in north Phoenix is accelerating through the end of 2019 and into early 2020. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises everyone who lives, works and drives in the area to allow extra travel time and be prepared to use detours while several ramp, roadway and interstate restrictions are in place. Most work is scheduled to occur during overnight and early morning hours; however, ramp closures at I-17 will be in place continuously, seven days a week, while work is underway. ADOT also notes that these scheduled closures (and re-openings) are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors, so it’s important to check the website for updates. While experiencing heavy traffic or delays due to these closures, keep the spirit of the season alive by allowing extra space for other drivers to merge and providing courtesy on the road to ensure the holiday travel doesn’t bring out any Grinchy road rage. But there is another element I love that is exclusive to this location — the cooking school! My love of cooking exceeds my skills, but that doesn’t stop me from trying. Thus, cooking classes. The Fry’s atmosphere is pretty intimate — it looks almost like a friend’s kitchen where you can belly up to the bar and chat while you watch her cook — and you can also enjoy a beverage while you cook. Bonus. There are a number of class options ranging from knife

skills to culinary exploration such as Native Foods, Basque Cooking, Paleo 101 and more. Some classes, which range between one and two hours, are even free!

Being a huge fan of both themes and doing fun stuff with my kids, the three of us took a Halloween Treats class back in October. This class included three fun (and super simple) recipes, plus pumpkin carving. On this particular occasion, it occurred to me that another wonderful aspect of Fry’s cooking classes is that they do all the prep and clean up. The good news is that many patients are able to utilize some of their insurance benefits. I always recommend that patients contact their insurance company prior to visits to inquire about possible coverage. OUT OF NETWORK CLAIMS: Many insurance companies may consider Naturopathic Physicians as outof-network providers. Some insurance companies may be able to reimburse you for partial or all of your visits with proper documentation. At the time of your visit, you will be provided with the necessary forms which include CPT and diagnostic codes. You can submit these forms along with your receipt to your insurance company for possible

reimbursement. This may be a mail-in form or a form you fill out online with uploaded documentation and receipts. The reimbursement amount will depend on your specific plan.

he holidays are barreling down on us; I can already smell the delicious pie, mashed potatoes and deep-fried turkey. It comes every year and the dreaded weight gain seems to start earlier every year! It used to start with Halloween and that was one day. Now Halloween starts earlier with extra events and activities, trunk or treat, pumpkin patches, costume parties and of course the piles of candy the kids bring home from all these events that taunt and tempt us from the pantry. The weight starts piling on by mid-October! It doesn’t have to be this way. Take control today and roll into 2020 feeling strong and confident with these simple tricks to stay the course through the barrage of candy, treats, adult beverages and foods laced with bad fats and calories. With a carefully laid plan, a little self control and being surrounded by the right people, you can have fun, enjoy the holidays and even lose weight before the new year. The first step is to make a plan. Start with your workouts and self-care time. Write in pen into your calendar the days and times that you are going to workout, followed by your selfcare times. Do not compromise these times. If life happens, DO NOT scrap all your good intentions. Get over it and keep on going! Ditch the all-ornothing mind set and when life gets in the way, figure out how to get a solid 20-minute workout in instead of doing nothing at all. Next, write in the festivities you are going to attend. Make sure they are spaced out and not overwhelming the holidays cease to be fun when it is a frantic dash from one event to another. It is okay to pick and choose your calendar of events. Look at your social calendar and decide which events are necessary, and which ones can be skipped. Stress is one of the fastest vehicles to weight gain, depression and unhealthy choices.

Look at your social calendar; chances are there are reoccurring annual events that you can judge the type and quality of the food you can expect based on previous years experience. Once again it comes down to making a plan. If you decide that the double chocolate lava cake is worth it, then by all means have a slice and enjoy it – just make adjustments for the extra calories and sugar in your diet from there. Like in most areas of life, poor planning leads to poor performance. Chances are, you are not going to accidentally lose weight or have it just fall off (although wouldn’t that be nice!) Finding an accountability partner - the right one - is priceless. The wrong one however can derail your entire effort and leave you worse off than before. When picking an accountability partner, it is important that this person (or group of people) are not enablers, and they are ready for positive change themselves, not negative. Find someone who has already started the journey to better health, is motivated, will call you out when you falter and is positive. This could be the ideal time to find a fitness professional or group class to hold you accountable during the holidays. It is far easier to maintain a certain weight than it is to lose weight. Lastly, set realistic goals. It is the holidays; they are meant to be social and fun. Setting lofty weight loss goals during the holidays can set you up for failure. Maintaining your weight through the holidays puts you ahead of 75% of the American population. Don’t set goals and expectations you know you cannot hold to. This leads to a negative cycle of failure and self-doubt that real change is possible. The belief that change is possible is essential to every journey to health and wellness.

Q: Is CBD the same as marijuana and will it make me high? A: No, CBD is NOT marijuana and it will NOT make you high. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 different cannabinoids. Like Hemp, marijuana is also a variety of cannabis plant. Hemp plants contain CBD and trace amounts of THC at or below 0.3%. THC has both medicinal and psychoactive properties, whereas CBD has tremendous medicinal properties (neuro-protectant and anti-inflammatory) with no psychoactive effects. Q: Is CBD legal? A: Yes, Hemp-derived CBD is Federally legal. CBD is primarily produced from hemp plants but can also be produced from marijuana plants. CBD is illegal if sourced from marijuana. It is important to know the source, and that

you are purchasing from a reputable supplier. If a CBD product tests higher than the Federally mandated THC level of 0.3%, the product is deemed illegal. There are a number of products on the market that are not properly lab tested, do not contain the labeled amount of CBD, and exceed the legal amount of THC. Proper lab testing is crucial to make sure that you are not breaking the law unknowingly.

Q: How do I know if a CBD product is legitimate/safe? A: The average consumer won’t know and may find that many CBD products don’t work for them. Lab testing verifies the CBD content/potency as well as tests for bacteria, mold, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. There are few regulations governing today’s CBD industry which means purchasing from a reputable source that follows proper lab testing procedures is extremely important.

Q: How do I determine what is a quality CBD product? A: We have an ongoing joke in our lab, “If you wouldn’t buy sushi at a gas station, would you buy gas station CBD?” Always start with a reputable brand with proper labeling and verified third party lab testing. Full-Spectrum CBD is king because it produces an “entourage effect” in conjunction with other cannabinoids, as opposed to a “Pure” or “Isolated” CBD, which has limited benefits and no traceable THC. Seek products that have all-natural ingredients and use Super Critical CO2 Extraction. Quality CBD is not cheap. Q: How does CBD work in my body? A: To put it simply, all animals and humans have an Endocannabinoid System already present in their bodies. You have receptors throughout your body that accept and use these cannabinoids (CBD being the most prolific) to regulate homeostasis in the body.

That’s why CBD can work for so many ailments.

Q: What is the best delivery method for CBD? A: It is scientifically proven that smoking a medication and inhaling the vapors has high efficacy and is fast-acting. However, it is generally accepted that smoking, and more recently vaping, is not recommended for your health. The best delivery method would then be CBD Oil administered sublingually and absorbed directly into the bloodstream. You can also get CBD through topical applications (creams/lotions) absorbed through the skin. Topical applications are more location specific and can be very effective but have less efficacy than sublingual delivery. WASHINGTON FEDERAL TRANSFORMS INTO WAFD BANK ARIZONA By Alison Bailin Batz

ashington Federal is one of the nation’s strongest banks. Within Arizona, it boasts $1.4 billion in deposits at its 31 branches.

But over the past several years, even after winning the Money Magazine’s “Best Bank” in the state, Washington Federal in Arizona still got the same questions over and over. SUBWAY KIDS & SPORTS SURPRISES TWO STUDENTS AT DESERT COVE ELEMENTARY

ubway Kids & Sports of Arizona, in partnership with Subway Restaurants of Arizona, Dasani Water, Shamrock Farms and The Be Kind People Project, recognized two special students at Desert Cove Elementary at 28th Street and Shea this November as part of its Cycle for Success program. Through a teacherled nomination process, wherein educators are asked to submit nominations highlighting students’ good works both inside and outside of the classroom, one second grader and one fifth grader were chosen to be surprised with bikes, helmets and locks, as well as Subway lunches for their entire classes. “This student always has an infectious smile on her face,” says principal Stacey Orest. “She’s known as a helper and is the first to ask her teachers if she can help clean up and first to help students if they need help during class.” The Cycle for Success program has been operating for more than a decade and focuses on increasing children’s self-esteem, encouraging

the community to become involved in the lives of at-risk children and promoting random acts of kindness in local schools. Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona and The Be Kind People Project advocate for the health and safety of children, recognize random acts of kindness that may otherwise go unnoticed, and encourage community involvement in the lives of at-risk youth. “This is a student who is always willing to put others first,” says Orest. “He never hesitates to open doors and offers his help cleaning up after class projects. It is a delight to have this student on campus.” Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona’s mission is to provide sports equipment, uniforms, registration fees and access to major sporting events for kids who might not otherwise be able to participate. IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER BARIATRIC SURGERY? BENEFITS MAY INCLUDE REMISSION OR REVERSAL OF TYPE 2 DIABETES, LOWERED RISK OF HEART DISEASE

very year, countless resolutions are made following the holidays to “lose that extra weight once and for all.” While there is no magic solution, there is a medical solution at Abrazo Health hospitals. In the United States, more than twothirds of the population suffer from obesity, and the numbers continue to increase. When diet, exercise and medications have failed, there is still another option! It may be time to consider weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the

diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. Weight loss surgery may provide effective, lasting relief from severe obesity for appropriate patients, according to Daniel Fang, MD, FACS, FASMBS, bariatric surgeon at Abrazo’s Scottsdale Campus. Weight loss surgery may be an option for adults with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious health problems related to obesity. While weight loss surgery is considered safe, like any surgery, it does

have potential risks. Those who are considering surgical weight loss should talk to their physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery. “Weight loss surgery is designed to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and it can help alleviate many other obesity-related conditions like heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, depression and more,” said Fang. The good news is that typically the benefits of weight loss surgery far outweigh the risks, with results including long-term remission or reversal of type 2 diabetes; improved mobility and increased energy; lowered risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke; reduced or eliminated joint pain; improved mood and feelings of wellbeing and increased selfesteem and confidence. The Abrazo Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Program at Scottsdale Campus is fully accredited as a comprehensive bariatric facility by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) of the American College of Surgeons and American Society

Being accredited through MBSAQIP provides guidance for hospitals to build and sustain safe, efficacious and high quality care bariatric programs, according to Dr. Fang. If you’re wondering if you’re a candidate for weight-loss surgery, there are some indicators. Those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more or who are more than 100 pounds overweight (for example, an adult who is 5’11” tall and weighs 290 pounds would have a BMI over 40) or a BMI of 35 or more and at least two obesity related issues such as type II diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease could be ideal for this type of surgery. Another candidate for this type of medical weight loss solution would be those with the inability to achieve a healthy weight through traditional weight loss methods. When considering this surgery, keep in mind that the National Institutes of Health and the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommend that surgery be performed by a board-certified surgeon with specialized experience/ training in bariatric and metabolic surgery, and at a center that has a multidisciplinary team of experts for follow-up care. Follow-up care can include meeting with a nutritionist, an exercise physiologist or specialist, and north32ndnews.com

a mental health professional. In addition, some insurance companies require that the surgery be performed at a facility that meets the ASMBSapproved quality standards. Facilities which meet high standards or quality, like those outlined in MBSAQIP, are preferable choices for patients. WHAT TO EXPECT When combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, bariatric surgery may act as an effective tool to provide long term weight-loss and help increase one’s quality of health, explains Dr. Fang.

Bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and duodenal switch, work by changing the anatomy of your gastrointestinal tract (stomach and digestive system) or by causing different physiologic changes in your body that change your energy balance and fat metabolism. “Regardless of which bariatric surgery procedure you and your surgeon decide is best for you, it is important to remember that bariatric surgery is a tool. Weight loss success also depends on many other important factors, such as nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification. “By changing your gastrointestinal anatomy, certain bariatric procedures affect the production of intestinal hormones in a way that reduces hunger and appetite and increases feelings of fullness. The end result is reduction in the desire to eat and in the frequency of eating,” said Dr. Fang. “Unlike dietary weight loss, surgical weight loss has a higher rate of success because an appropriate energy balance is created.” Bariatric surgery may improve a number of conditions and cause hormonal changes to reverse the progression of obesity. Several studies have found that more than 90 percent of bariatric patients are able to maintain a long-term weight loss of 50 percent excess body weight or more. t its third annual Badge Bash, Girl Scouts– Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) raised $280,000 to benefit Girl Scouting in Arizona. GSACPC was joined by more than 500 attendees, including Girl Scout alum, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, and dozens of sponsors including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and Arizona Cardinals. This adults-only event gave attendees the opportunity to experience Girl Scouting first-hand and see how it can transform girls into G.I.R.L.s – go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders. Attendees gathered their “troop” of friends for a night of fun program-inspired activities to test their outdoor, healthy living, entrepreneurship and life skills, earning badges along the way. The activities ranged from archery to balloon dart painting to trivia. After the festivities, guests enjoyed dinner under the stars and a short program on the power of Girl Scouting. The Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation was honored with the Promise Award for their inspirational leadership and continued support of Girl Scouting in Arizona. This is the time of year that we all want to be outside enjoying the season; hiking, exploring, BBQing, and gardening. Creating a vibrant, colorful, and alive environment on your patio is definitely a reality using various pottery and container gardens and protecting your delicate plants during frost warnings in the Valley. With increasing trends of creating beautiful, functional living spaces outside, more and more families are preparing their entire Holiday meals outside on their BBQ Grills – even desserts and side dishes come out spectacularly when done on a woodfired Traeger Grill or on a natural lump-charcoal ceramic cooker like Big Green Egg. Creating that perfect outdoor living

space is easy to do with a little bit of imagination and maybe a bit of a green thumb.

PATIO GARDENING Container gardening is a great way to bring color and lushness close to your living spaces, softening the hardness of the concrete patio and stucco walls. Start with some glazed pottery in your favorite colors, in different sizes and shapes. Create good drainage using small rocks or gravel at the bottom of the planter and use rich organic soils and amendments. Finish it off with lush plants of varying heights. VEGETABLE GARDENING Fall and winter are also a great time to have a backyard vegetable garden. By now, you probably have your gardens in, but if not, you can still start now by using more mature plants and mulching your soils to keep it warm as temperatures cool down.

In 2017, the Arizona State Parks & Trails system was awarded the Gold Medal for being the best-managed state park system in the nation from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE – PAYSON Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located near Payson on the Mogollon Rim. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a stream fed by natural springs. The stream flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM – SUPERIOR One of the best reasons to venture east of Phoenix on Highway 60 is to visit the diverse beauty of Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Founded in the 1920s by mining magnate Col. William Boyce Thompson, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. This is a beautiful spot for a day trip, and a must-see drive into the mountains near Superior on the way to Globe. CATALINA – TUCSON If you’re looking for fantastic natural views of Sonoran Desert mountains, you must pay a visit to Catalina State Park in Tucson. Nestled in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, this park provides 5,500 acres of fantastic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, through canyons, streams, and desert in the Coronado National Forest. A favorite

spot for bird and wildlife watching, the park offers beautiful views of mountains, desert flora, and wildlife. KARTCHNER CAVERNS – BENSON Celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, Kartchner Caverns is a world-class Arizona State Park that features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. A well-kept secret for decades, the park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course touring the pristine and previously untouched caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly. WHAT THE TRUCK?! TESLA FINALLY UNVEILS “CYBERTRUCK” By Molly Cerreta Smith

After much hint-dropping and hype build up via social media and interviews, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed a prototype of the new “Cybertruck” on November 21, the last day of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Tesla’s first ever truck has been a longtime coming. Musk has taken to Twitter to tease the electric pickup truck release (which he first announced way back in 2013) and earlier this year, Musk teased fans with a mysterious image of part of a truck that could either be interpreted as a hood or the bed of the pickup with a sleek, matching tonneau cover on board. The Tesla CEO got fans buzzing through other hints that his latest vehicle would be inspired by the movie Blade Runner, and he also claimed that the truck would be “something quite unique, unlike anything.” Not one to

shy away from tooting his company’s own horn, Musk referred to the “cyberpunk truck,” as Tesla’s “best product ever” and even boasted in an interview with Recode last year that the new release is “…Gonna be awesome, it’s gonna be amazing. This will be heartstopping.” The reveal was certainly heart-stopping… or perhaps jaw-dropping is a better word. Musk spend upwards of 15 minutes hyping the Cybertruck one final time prior to its reveal. However, not all claims may have been thoroughly tested prior to the reveal. While Musk’s claim that his new truck was “bulletproof” (at least to smaller firearms) panned out — as a demonstration of sledgehammering the sides resulted in no damage to be seen, the demonstration of the truck’s “unbreakable” metal glass windows didn’t go quite as well. When a metal ball was thrown at the first window, it shattered immediately. Musk said the throw was

“too hard,” but the glass cracked on the second attempt too. Musk stood by his claim noting, “But it didn’t go through.”

Reactions lit up the social media world following the reveal. Some comments likened Tesla’s new truck to a drawing a kindergarten might have drawn. With the Cybertruck hype, Tesla has enjoyed a hearty rise in stock over the past few months — up 63 percent since August. But it will be interesting to see what kind of demand the truck, which will be sold in the fall of 2021, will attract

While this might not be a truck for the masses, Musk had also said at one point, “If there’s only a small number of people that like the truck, I guess we’ll make a more conventional truck in the future.”

here’s one thing for certain — there is no shortage of quickcasual, to-go, drive-thru and delivery options to cater to the demand of our busy lives. In a world of hustle and bustle, some “fast” food options are better than others, when it comes to fresh-made options, quality ingredients, customer service and dedication to the community. PDQ, with three locations in the West, including one in the Paradise Valley area at 4514 East Cactus Road in Phoenix, is short for “People Dedicated to Quality.” PDQ was founded initially in 2011 in Florida by Outback Steakhouse co-founder Bob Basham and MVP Holdings CEO Nick Reader, who remain the two principal owners of PDQ. Beloved throughout the Southeast and now beyond for its hand-breaded chicken tenders, PDQ brought its freshmade daily salads, sandwiches, bowls and hand-spun milkshakes to Phoenix in 2017.

Rather than offer fast food, PDQ offers fresh food fast, according to Kristy Haase, operating director of the PDQ Paradise Valley, who opened all three PDQ locations in the West. “We like to serve quality food to the people in our community, she says. “We want your family to eat what our family eats — fresh ingredients, made-to-order sandwiches and salads, hand-breaded tenders, and hand-spun shakes.”

She adds that PDQ values people and quality — and the company is an active member in its community. “From sponsoring high school football teams, elementary reading programs, and family fun nights at the restaurant, we pride ourselves in being able to give back to the community,” Haase adds. Since its inception in the valley, PDQ has partnered with community organizations in Phoenix including the Brittany Spaniel Rescue, Scottsdale YMCA, Autism Walk – SARRC, PV High Football, Horizon Choir and Horizon Baseball; Hidden in the Hills Elementary Reading Program, Fresh Start Women’s Group,

Do Re Mi Choir Group, and Thrive Foster Program. Currently, the Paradise Valley location has a donation tree up for the latter organization, where people can select a tag off of the tree and purchase the gift to benefit a family in need. In addition to supporting its community and providing its customers with excellent service and quality foods, PDQ puts stock in its staff. “I love working with PDQ, says Haase. “They truly value input and are open to opinion and change. The organization has simple objectives and they put people and quality first. I joined PDQ because of the food and stayed because of the people. We like to have fun and we are

proud of what we serve.” In fact PDQ’s commitment to their staff is based on the belief that their greatest success is their people. PDQ-Arizona has a fully staffed kitchen, where each menu item is made-toorder each day from the never-frozen 100 percent fresh hand-breaded chicken tenders to the fresh salads, sandwiches and more. JOJO RABBIT

During WWII in Nazi Germany, a young boy questions his beliefs when he discovers a young Jewish girl secretly living in his house. Taika Waititi manages to perfectly walk the tightrope between poor taste and edgy comedy. Jojo Rabbit tears apart fascism in a comedic yet still heartfelt way, never pulling punches and still giving such a horrific time the brutally honest look it deserves. Even the film’s design and cinematography match the tonal shifts between light and dark. The cast is a perfect mix of newcomers (Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie) and seasoned actors (Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell) who bring the characters to life. This was a passion project for Waititi and it shows.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Two sailors suspect there are greater forces conspiring against them on their isolated lighthouse shift. The wonderful thing about Robert Eggers’ new film is how the viewer soon feels the same isolation as the characters. The camerawork, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe’s performances and visuals capture you and place you into their world before you know it. This world is scary, unrelenting, nothing ever feels normal or safe, and it will continuously keep you guessing if something is actually watching our char-

acters or if they’re going insane. The black and white photography and unique aspect ratio are key in this style. Creating the atmosphere perfectly is Mark Korven’s absolutely terrifying score - one of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a new horror classic.

FORD V FERRARI

The true story of Ford’s efforts to outdo Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford V Ferrari is 152 minutes long and doesn’t waste a single moment. Everything is central to the story and includes the perfect amount of focus on the actual creation of the car; even the failures and improvements get their proper showcase here. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are wonderful as two distinct characters that mix well together, and director James Mangold shoots the race scenes in a way that makes the final race one of the best theatrical experiences of the year.

PARASITE

A family in South Korea forms a relationship with an upper-class family which brings dire consequences. Director Bong Joon-ho has made his masterpiece with this new thriller. This film astounds with a mixture of incredible filmmaking, writing and an amazingly diverse personality of cast members, and offers an intriguing look into class disparity and differences. A film like this receiving a wide release is rare, so I highly recommend taking the time to see it.
