REAL ESTATE WEDNESDAYS THE HOME OWNERSHIP INDUSTRY PARTNERING WITH THE SALVATION ARMY TO RING THE BELLS THIS SEASON

young mother approaches the supermarket door and her two children light up with anticipation. She stops to search her purse for loose change as her little boy jumps up and down. When she finds two quarters, she gives them to her child and he rushes to the red kettle. Once there, he carefully drops the coins, one by one, into the slot, receiving a thank you and a smile from the bell ringer nearby. This scene plays out over and over again throughout the season and is often a child’s first experience with charitable giving and the Salvation Army. Real Estate Wednesdays began in 2013 when super volunteer, Marlene Klotz-Collins explained to JoAnn Callaway at lunch that on Wednesdays, the Salvation Army had difficulty recruiting volunteers and consequently had to pay minimum-wage workers to ring the bells at red kettles. “Joseph and I can do Wednesdays”, JoAnn said, and before dessert she had volunteered the entire Home Ownership Industry, agents, brokers, lenders, title officers and affiliates, in Maricopa county to ring the bells as well. They just didn’t know it yet. That first year, more than 1,100 Home Ownership Industry volunteers rang the bells at almost 100 kettles each Wednesday between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last season, the effort grew to over 3,000 participants and topped the million-dollar mark since its inception. “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without ringing the bells,” says Alison Hudgins, Title Officer at Old Republic. “I love the people and the Salvation Army stories they tell as they stuff a bill into the slot.” Income from the kettles remains a big part of the Army’s budget as they provide services such as family shelters, meals for the elderly, disaster response, abuse counseling, addiction recovery, summer water drives,

the Kroc Center and more all year. At Thanksgiving, the Army feeds 3,000 meals at the Phoenix Convention Center to the homeless. The big event is Christmas day, when more than 5,000 enjoy a holiday meal at the convention center. Free haircuts and phone calls anywhere in the USA are offered, and clothing is made available to those in need. All this comes from Red Kettle donations. DID YOU KNOW? Commissioned to write a new Christmas song for Bing Crosby’s 1951 movie, The Lemon Drop Kid, Jay Livingston and Roy Evans were inspired by the Salvation Army kettles in front of The New York City department stores. “Silver Bells” became a Christmas standard and has been recorded by more than twenty major artists including Elvis Presley and Twisted Sister. As you visit your local retailer this season and when you hear the ringing bells, stop for a moment and say hi to the volunteer. It just may be your Realtor, home inspector or mortgage lender.

MY DAD LOVED THE MOVIE NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION. WHEN I MOVED TO NORTH 32ND, I WAS THRILLED to discover the Sheaborhood’s own National Lampoon style lights.

As with most of my event ideas, the concept for the Sheaborhood Festival of Lights started with an idea of a fun activity that blossomed into a full event; I dreamed of biking around to see lights.

When we started in 2016, we had just one escort car as we didn’t know how many people would show up the first year and did not plan for police to guide us down the streets during the holiday. In 2017, we knew to expect more people and we were able to have the same officers that help with the Spring Cruisin’ Event help with the Festival of Lights. The second year was definitely more fun, with neighbors getting into the festivities with a hot chocolate stand that turned into a mini block party, as we all just had to stop and enjoy some hot cocoa. Let’s celebrate the lights of the holiday season that are showcased throughout our Sheaborhood. This year the event will take place on Friday, December 14. We meet at 32 Shea and cue up the bikes in the drivethru lane. Be sure to bring your bikes decked out in lights for a family friendly event. Don’t forget about safety too - be sure to bring a helmet.

ANGRY CRAB SHACK COMING SOON TO 32ND ST AND BELL THE ANGRY CRAB SHACK BEGAN IN MESA, AZ IN NOVEMBER 2013 AS THE BRAINCHILD OF FORMER NFL PLAYER AND longtime restaurant owner Ron Lou who saw a need for a fun, affordable, high quality seafood restaurant and set out to fill that void. Using his 35+ years’ experience purchasing and serving live seafood, he began offering a wide variety of seafood options in a “boil bag” as well as other seafood and nonseafood offerings. Before long, the “Angry Crab Shack” was a sensation. Seafood lovers from near and far found their way to a local Angry Crab Shack to experience their outstanding food, personalized service, and genuine hospitality. Menu items include tasty appetizers including clam strips, hush puppies, calamari and angry edamame (spiced with creole seasoning of course). They also carry soups and salads for those trying to keep to the lighter

side of things, and of course the stuff you’d come to expect….catfish, gator nuggets, crispy shrimp and more. One unique item you’ll see on the menu is “Phoenix Children’s Hospital Fries.” Angry Crab Shack has partnered with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and is donating a portion of each purchase of PCH menu items to the hospital. PCH is a non-profit hospital, and is able to do the work they do with the generous support of the local community. Last year alone, PCH treated over 135,000 patients, and within five years, 1 in 4 Arizona children will have received care from a Phoenix Children’s provider.

Angry Crab Shack is an incredible success in the Arizona market, and this family favorite restaurant is showing no signs of stopping their growth. They currently have seven locations in the valley including Mesa, Ahwatukee, Phoenix, Goodyear, Peoria and Tucson. The brand is expanding quickly, with new locations

CITY NEWS ANOTHER NEW DRINKERY AND EATERY OPENING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AREA REVITALIZING CONTINUES DOWN THE 32ND STREET CORRIDOR WITH A NEW ALE house, bottle shop and smoke kitchen opening on the NWC of 32nd Street and Cactus. Lovecraft will open this month offering 25 taps of craft beer, wine and cider, along with a 2-go bottle shop and smoked kitchen. Rebecca Golden, former owner of 32

Shea, and her partner Ryan Castillo couldn’t wait to get back into the “neighBEERhood”, but this time with hopes of revitalizing another great intersection along the 32nd Street corridor. “We love this brick building (formerly the Smoke House Grill) and could see great potential here”, says Golden. We realize it hasn’t been successful in quite some time, so we put a lot of thought about what it needed. First thing on the list was a facelift. Removing the arches and modernizing the front not only shows the community there is change going on, it also encourages neighboring businesses to do the same. There are so many great neighborhoods in this area with so little choices, so we wanted to give the community a gathering place where they can hang out, play some ping-pong, watch sporting events and enjoy great food and drinks.” As far as the menu, “I was born and

raised in New Mexico and I cannot deny that inﬂuence in everything I do, like eating everything with fresh jalapeños. It made sense to make a menu I’d love by combining two great cuisines, slow-cooked smoked meats (since we inherited the smoker from the last joint) and amazing New Mexico cuisine,” stated Golden. “After all, when you eat something spicy you need to wash it down with something and what’s better than delicious craft beer?” Though, Golden did hesitate to call Lovecraft a restaurant, “We really are a craft beer bar that serves food, rather than a full restaurant. This will give us ﬂexibility to grow the menu slowly without all the expectations that come with restaurant life.” Lovecraft plans on having weekly events that support the community such as open-mic night, live local bands, ping pong tournaments, craft art nights hosted by their neighbors

Craft Nights, pop-up dinners with local Chefs, community bingo and events sponsoring local breweries. One thing Golden was adamant about was the need to support all local businesses. “When people put their lives on the line to open a business, they need community support. After all, if we do good the neighborhood does good and property values increase. Look at what Postino’s did for Arcadia! Small businesses don’t have the resources like franchises do, so setting expectations that things will be perfect is extremely hard for a small business to accomplish. We don’t have executive boards and investors to run our ideas through, we make the best decisions with the resources we have. With that said, if there is an issue talk to the owner or manager before you go to Yelp or review sites. I know I’d prefer to hear it in-person or get an email first before reading it online.”

32ND STREET NEIGHBORHOOD CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF LUMINARIAS RESIDENTS OF EAST ACOMA DRIVE IN NORTH PHOENIX WILL CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF ILLUMINATING LIGHTS ON CHRISTMAS EVE. This annual tradition brightens the season and makes a half-mile stretch through their neighborhood a destination drive for hundreds of holiday celebrants. More than 1,000 white luminarias will line the sidewalks of the residential drive, located midway between Thunderbird and Greenway roads, as it meanders from 32nd to 28th Streets. Additionally, residents along the Claire Drive cul-de-sacs east and west of 29th Street are placing luminarias in front of their along their homes. The lighting of the luminarias for both streets begins at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. “The voluntary display has grown in participation to more than 90 percent of the homes along Acoma Drive since inception in 1994,” said Jerry Porter, who began the tradition in 1994 at the suggestion of his wife, Susan. The luminaria sacks are distributed free of charge by Realtor® Terri Welch of Keller Williams Realty, with residents simply asked to provide candles and place the sacks uniformly along the sidewalk. north32ndnews.com

Residents gather to enjoy the event and neighborly fellowship during an outdoor, post-lighting “driveway social.” This year’s social will be on the Porters’ driveway at 3010 E. Acoma Drive, with passersby welcome to stop and join the potluck event. He adds there is a possibility “a jolly old fellow in a red suit” might take a break from his worldwide trip that evening to pass out candy canes to passing motorists. The event’s 10th anniversary in 2003 sparked the beginning of a new tradition in which the illuminating display is presented each year in honor or memory of someone of special significance to an Acoma Drive-area neighbor. This year’s 25th anniversary display is a variation of that practice, with each neighbor given the opportunity to recognize the legacy of the Acoma Drive neighborhood by writing the name of an individual they wish to honor or memorialize on the creased, folded-over top of each luminaria bag. Residents may recognize one individual or multiple individuals on the bags in front of their homes, meaning scores or even hundreds of individuals could be recognized for their role in contributing to the legacy of those residing along the street. Representatives of the Phoenix Police and Fire departments are invited to join the festivities, if duty allows. NORTH 32ND NEWS • December 2018 • 5

My wife and I work out at YouFit on 323nd and Shea for an hour, then I head off to the office and help customers with all of their insurance questions, issues, etc. I get to the office and JoAnn, my account manager welcomes me with a smiling face. I go out and meet with clients throughout the day, take them to lunch, visit their businesses and build relationships. There is not a day that goes by where I do not learn something new. I have been in this business 11 years and it never gets stale. Every day is about meeting people, helping people and building relationships. My day ends at home having dinner with my family and watching t.v. with my girls. We

MY FAV ORITE THING ABOUT LIV ING/ WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS... The community has a small town feel to it. I love that the elementary, middle and high schools that my daughters attend are right next to each other and we are close enough to walk there for a sporting event, performing arts show, or PTO event. I also love the revitalization of the Shea and 32nd Street business community. There is a lot of growth and constant activity which makes it a fun place to live and work. The people are awesome as well. We have lived in AZ for 15 years and this is the friendliest community we have been in. MY FAV ORITE MOV IE I COULD NEV ER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Rocky IV. You’ve got to root for a husband and wife who love each other deeply and face challenges together. I love the scene when Adrienne tells Rocky that he shouldn’t go to Russia to fight with Drago because he can’t win. He goes anyway and then she comes after realizing that even if she loses him, she is supporting his desire to avenge his friend’s death. Also, it can’t get any better than the training scenes. I have the soundtrack and it still gets me fired up. I love to watch the underdog succeed. MY FAMILY... Is my life. Brooke is my wife and high school sweetheart. My three daughters are Gracie, Lily and Mia. Gracie is a sophomore at SMHS, while Lily and Mia go to Desert Cove (Lily is in sixth and Mia is in second grade). We also have a Jack Russell Terrier Poodle mix named Buddy. He thinks he is a lot bigger than he actually is. THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY... The only way to truly build your business the right way is through strong relationships!

HOW THE ART OF KARATE HAS GROWN WITH THE PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY By Averi Lamont

ctivities like karate are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. One of the greatest benefits of martial arts is that it teaches respect, self-discipline, socialization skills and helps bring families together. Paradise Valley School of Karate has been successfully empowering this community for more than 35 years. Mike Wall, owner and sensei at Paradise Valley School, began his journey in Iowa where he was born and raised. He grew up in a small town where there were no karate schools. It wasn’t until he watched a Bruce Lee film that his love for karate began. He took his first lesson in 1972 and then in 1974 became a student of John Hutchcroft. He moved to Arizona in 1979 to train with Master Robert A. Trias and from there opened his own business. Wall’s wife Heather began with Sensei Wall in 2005 and has created an organization called Moxie Up

that teaches girls defense. The school is also staffed with many other accomplished and inspiring teachers including Tom Robbins, Cory Kahabka, Peter Sangiorgio, Sasha Jovanovic, Jack Cannada, and Robert Castro. Paradise Valley School of Karate and Mr. Wall were recently recognized at the World Championships in 2017. One of their students in particular named this activity as a great success after taking months to just step onto the mat. Sensei never gave up and worked hard and slow to get her comfortable with the skills and lessons of karate. It was a true testament that every student that walks through their doors are met where they are and the passion they have for this sport and the community.

The school has an immaculate list of accomplishments both locally and nationally. To start, Sensei Mark Wall and Heather Wall are both on the Hall of Fame. Their school was also rated #1 in the nation in 2016, ranked #1 by United States Karate

Association in 2017, as well as multiple students placing first place in national competitions. The Paradise Valley School of Karate is a great asset to the Valley. It continues to expand its reach to many children and adults. It has created a safe environment for families to come and learn the art of karate, as well as teaching values of respect which can help further children in their lives.

nother new business in the Sheaborhood, Garage Guild, brings to life Michelle Lowman’s vision to form a craft shop while allowing “Sheabors” to design and make items such as knitted socks, wood carvings or even electronic 3D art. Somewhere in between a craft corner and a trade type instructional site, Garage Guild is a mom and pop shop where you can let your imagination run wild. Determined to share her passion for knitting, weaving, carving, teaching and learning how to do difficult things, Michelle Lowman opened a maker’s space, just south of the infamous corner of 32nd Street and Shea. In her own words, Michelle shares a deeper look at the inspiration to start her business and more of what is found inside her shop.

Q . Wh at i n s pi r e d y ou to ope n Gar age Gu i l d ? A. My grandfather was a carpenter, as is my dad. My mom is an artist and crafter, so it’s pretty natural that I would end up doing crafty types of things too! I’ve also added a major “nerd” component because of my background in IT and tech publishing: I used to edit and publish books on maker topics like robotics, 3D printing, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc., and I spent years getting to know the amazing people who invent this stuff and teach it. I decided a few years ago that I would eventually open my own maker’s space, and this year was just the right time to do it…everything just came together. Q . HELPING BABIES DEVELOP AND THRIVE THROUGH THE POWER OF MUSIC By Jennif er Marshall

usic for babies? At first thought, this might seem an odd concept; after all, they’re newborns. What do they know about music ?

Today, her business has grown to include a studio—Kids.Play.Music.—near Shea Boulevard and Highway 51, and she also teaches at nine other locations around Phoenix. When she began the program, she was just a solo operation; now, she has eight teachers on her team.

“Babies are making like a billion neuro connections those first years of life,” said Kathy Rowe of Music Together, “and music helps their development socially and emotionally.”

Music Together is a worldwide program for babies to five-year-olds where parents and baby can sing and dance while making and feeling the music together. Rowe holds a license to teach the program.

For years, pediatricians and other health experts have touted the benefits of reading to babies and engaging them in educational play. In fact, we know even the sheer physical contact of holding our little ones for extended periods of time is beneficial to their total development.

“One of Music Together’s principles is that all children are musical,” she said. “They can feel the beat and tone, and they can dance. They’re born with musical abilities, but they need to be nurtured.”

Rowe, an Arizona native, holds a Master’s in Music Education. In 1997, while residing in Chicago, she attended a Music Together class with her baby. From this first class, Rowe knew this was where and how she wanted to teach music going forward. When she and her family relocated back to Phoenix, there was no Music Together program in the Valley, so she established her own with her first class being held in her living room in 1999.

Rowe considers her business a “community of music makers” where learning, sharing and enjoying music is a group experience. While all babies and kids benefit and grow from the Music Together program, kids progress at all different levels and speeds. What’s important is to keep it fun, and progress follows naturally on its own. “Music aptitude is developmental,” said Rowe. “It’s not set until you’re around age nine.”

Parents are crucial to the success and growth of their kid’s musical development. Moms and dads are encouraged to practice music at home with their children. In fact, the parental inﬂuence is so strong, Rowe even teaches an adult guitar class ensuring music plays on in the home. As they are dependent on their parents as their primary caregivers, babies emulate whatever they do. Consequently, when mom and dad are excited to practice music, their child will want to do so as well. Rowe says she’s most excited about her Mixed-Age Classes, which are for infants up to five-year-olds and their parents and makes up the bulk of the repertoire of classes offered by Music Together. This group experience expands kids’ social intelligence along with supporting their language development. “I’m excited this is a fun activity that really integrates the entire brain at the same time,” she said. A Babies Only Class for those eight months and younger is also offered. Moms and dads who enroll their children in this program, discover that their kids are more ready emotionally to start school when the time comes, and they often enter with a stronger math brain. Another course, Rhythm Kids, is a world music class focusing on drumming. The four and five-yearolds attend the program with their parents while the kindergarteners through second graders come without their parents. Music Together con Espanol is the Mixed-Age Class that’s taught half in English and half in Spanish. This exciting, bilingual program helps give students a head start on learning a foreign language. For families who are perplexed as to what is the right class for their child, they can sample classes before committing to one. Classes are 45 minutes each, and they’re held for 10 weeks. Rowe thinks of her music classes as a “musical vitamin of sounds in their ears” as children receive music in different tonalities and meters. “You never see an unhappy child who is singing,” said Rowe, “music is good for their soul.”

n a changing market, it is important to consider the reasons for selling your home. Sometimes a job relocation, starting a family, getting married, or getting divorced make buying or selling a home necessary. There are financial factors at play with these decisions as with any major purchase, but that is not always the only reason behind selling or buying. If you are trying to maximize the financial outcome of the transaction, then it may behoove you to time the sale or purchase to be advantageous with the market. For example, if you are trying to get top dollar for your property and there is a spike in inventory, then you may decide to delay listing your home or even pull it from the market.

If you are making a decision that is more tied to emotional reasons, then timing for top dollar may not be your only consideration, as selling may become a necessity for other reasons. For example, if you have health implications from delaying putting your house on the market, your timeline may be expedited as the bottom line in finances may not be your most important consideration. It may make sense to put the house on the market and reduce the price to what the market will bear rather than wait it out to capitalize on getting top dollar for the property, when the motivation is principally to mitigate other risk factors that are not solely real estate. In every scenario it is important to consider your motivations for selling your home before you consider listing it for sale. This will help you make the right decisions at every step of the way,

whether it is decision based solely on the financial implications or there is an emotional basis for the decision.

It is important to understand the framework setting the tone for this decision, so that when it comes to negotiations you know where you are willing to compromise and where you need to negotiate.

ven if you aren’t in the real estate industry, you probably have friends or family that are. You may have heard them speaking of home tours from time to time and wondered what they are talking about. Typically a home tour is when a lending or title company, or some other entity, recruits real estate agents to include properties they have listed in a specific area on a tour. The tour is usually open to participating agents and affiliates from the sponsoring companies. They usually will meet at a predetermined location (typically the first home on the tour) and “caravan” from home to home. Tours are particularly good for agents looking for specific feedback on their listings. It may be that the seller wants it priced above market and collecting feedback from other agents saying the price needs to be dropped can assist the listing agent in convincing the seller to do so. For the affiliate sponsors, it’s an opportunity to have a handful of real estate agents as a captive audience for a few hours at which time they will try to start or build a referral partnership with them. Here in our neighborhood there are several home tours, but only one that can be called THE North north32ndnews.com

32nd Home Tour, which occurs the second Thursday of every month. About four years ago, neighborhood activist Allison Barnett of My Home Group saw this area as one that was in need of a good home tour. But Allison wasn’t going to just make it like any other tour, so with the help of some pretty cool sponsors, they founded the North 32nd Home Tour. With help from Nancy Pierson of Equity Title, Allie Flath of Chicago Title and Jaclyn Payne of CNN Mortgage they set out to create a unique and fun tour that actually helped get homes sold. The tour boundaries would be from the mountains at Dreamy Draw all the way north to Union Hills, west to Cave Creek Road and east to Tatum. Knowing that homes in this area offer so much diversity in terms of price, style, age, views, and amenities, it was sure to draw a lot of interest. So what makes the North 32nd Home Tour different from other tours? First, it starts with a hosted breakfast at 32Shea, everyone’s favorite neighborhood morning spot. Once the agents with listings on tour say a few words about the home they are presenting, they head out to the home and hold it open for the entirety of the tour. Why does this matter? Because the second reason this tour is unique is that it’s open to everyone. Members of the public, affiliates from

non-sponsoring companies, anyone can attend the tour and see all of the homes or just a specific home that they are interested in. This allows the agents hosting listings to not only receive feedback from other real estate agents, but also members of the general public that are potential buyers. The final reason this home tour is different is because there is a no host lunch at a different neighborhood restaurant each month. That’s when the home with the best feedback is awarded the “Best on Tour” and the real estate agents are entered for a rafﬂe prize from one of the affiliate sponsors. I was fortunate to be able to ride the coattails of the aforementioned

ladies and be added as the fourth sponsor at the beginning of this year. Having grown up in the area and lived here most of my life, it is fun to see the changes happening in this neighborhood. It’s also always fun to walk into a home that’s on the tour that belonged to someone you knew as a kid. So whether you are an area real estate agent trying to get a temperature on the neighborhood market or a neighbor that wants to see what’s happening in your area, you are welcome to join us every month starting around 9 a.m. on the second Thursday. AVOID THE NAUGHTY LIST: DON’T LET THE HOLIDAYS RUIN YOUR CREDIT

ooking for the “perfect gifts,” paired with enticing retail discounts and deals, can pressure holiday shoppers to spend more than they can afford. As a result, consumers may max out credit card limits or miss payments, negatively affecting credit scores. In addition, store credit cards may offer instant discounts that are tempting at the register -- but that new application could decrease your credit score. Not having enough money for presents and the strain holiday shopping puts on

However, many of these same consumers seem to be on the right track: in the survey, respondents listed several smart financial resolutions, including 28 percent who want to improve their credit scores, while almost 50 percent said saving more was a New Year’s resolution.

• CREDIT HISTORY: Those who’ve never used credit before will likely have a low score, or no score at all, while credit accounts that have been active for a long time reﬂect positively on your score, as does a healthy mix of accounts, such as having a mortgage, a few credit cards and auto loans.

• PAYMENT HISTORY: Accounting for roughly a third of your credit score, paying loans on time is crucial; too many late payments can decrease your score.

• STAYING OUT OF HOT WATER: Many people believe that financial transactions like rent, utility and telecommunications payments impact credit scores, but in fact, these are not factored in by many scoring companies. However, if you don’t pay bills and they get turned over to a collection agency, this could affect your credit score. Severely delinquent accounts are often reported to the credit bureaus.

• BALANCE: You never want your credit card balance to be higher than 30 percent of your credit limit - on a single card and across all of them. Keep balances low to keep your score high.

“While it’s fun to give to others during the holidays, make sure to give yourself the gift of not getting into debt,” says Rod Griffin, director of Public Education at Experian. “Stick to a shopping

OVERLORD

A group of American soldiers discover a secret lab underneath a German radio tower, where they discover experiments to reanimate the dead. Overlord is a crazy, entertaining movie. It delivers on the exciting grindhouse-like action and monster effects you expect from the trailers, while delivering two great leads with Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell. The dynamic they have together is not only interesting, but it leads to some surprising themes from the film, that of going lower than your enemy in order to win. It’s impressive and makes the film that much more engrossing. Nothing revolutionary, but it’s one not to miss.

ROMA

Roma shows us a year in the life of a family and their nanny as the father is away on business. Empathy, that’s the word to describe Roma. You feel nothing but empathy for Cleo and the family she works for. The actors, many of whom are first-timers, earn it, because they are amazing - especially Yalitza Aparicio as Cleo. Alfonso Cuaron also impresses not only with his direction, but also his work as his own cinematographer, with the film featuring several long takes that put you into the world. While the film will be seen by many on Netﬂix, the sound design is fantastic and must be experienced in theaters. It captures every raindrop, car and person walking by, and it’s absolutely immersive, and must get a nomination from the Academy. NOTE: Roma will only be playing in select theaters, and will be available on Netﬂix on December 14.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

The story about the rise, fall and resurgence of Freddie Mercury and ueen. Every biopic has to take some creative liberties with history, that’s understandable. But Bohemian Rhapsody crosses many lines. The depic24 • December 2018 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

tion of Freddie Mercury being the only diva of the band while Brian May Roger Taylor were perfect friends that just wanted to help is rather disturbing, mostly due to the fact that the latter two were heavily involved in the making of this movie. And if you’re wondering why John Deacon isn’t listed in that, well that’s because not only is he not credited like May Taylor, but he is constantly shafted in the film, essentially relegated to just “the fourth member of ueen” (the man doesn’t even get a proper introduction scene). There are plenty other moments I could bring up, but I think the fact that the big emotional scene towards the end, where Mercury reveals his AIDS diagnosis is the worst example. The film depicts this as happening just before Live Aid in 1985, when in reality Mercury was not diagnosed until 1987. It’s REALLY bad when your big “tearjerker bit” has to be falsified. This could be forgiven if Bohemian Rhapsody was at least interesting, but it basically follows every musical biopic trope to a T and isn’t even shot or edited interestingly outside a sparse few moments. That’s really unfortunate given how extraordinary of a band ueen was. Rami Malek’s amazing performance as Mercury, which captures all his mannerisms and traits while rarely feeling like an imitation, couldn’t save this movie.

SUSPIRIA

A dance academy secretly run by a coven of witches prepares for an upcoming ritual as a psychotherapist searches for a missing student. This is how you do a remake. Keep the spirit of the original film while making your own path, and Luca Guadagnino does that. Creepy, beautiful, and terrifying, Suspiria will never make you leave its world until the credits roll. Thom Yorke’s score is breathtaking, experimenting with different types of music not expected in a horror film. A great cast all around, but Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth, Tilda Swinton and “Lutz Esberdorf” are the greats. And don’t even get me started on the cinematography. A word of warning though: if you have a weak stomach, this might not be for you.

hen it comes to adopting pets during the holidays, the Phoenix Metro Chamber of Commerce wants to help dogs and cats find their forever homes. That’s one reason the chamber, which serves the Greater Phoenix metro area, is teaming up with Floor Decor in Glendale to host a Pet Adoption Day on Saturday, December 15. The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 5880 W. Bell Road, and benefit the non-profit foster groups, Arf-Anage Dog Rescue and Saving Orphan Souls Rescue. “This is the time of year that many people are tempted to surprise their family or friend with a lovable, furry pet. While we want folks to come out and adopt a dog or a cat, we also want to make sure the adoption is a good match,” said Jason Bressler, founder and executive director of the

Phoenix Metro Chamber of Commerce (PMCC). Cathy Roe Mullooly is the founder and CEO of Arf-Anage Dog Rescue, which is a non-profit, all-breed dog rescue specializing in care, rehabilitation and rehoming of momma dogs and pups in local shelters, and pups with medical conditions. They offered these tips for adopting a pet during the holiday season: 1. DON’T MAKE IT A SURPRISE Spur-of-the-moment, emotional decisions sometimes backfire, so tell

your family or friend that you want to help them adopt a pet and bring them with you. If there are any dogs at home, bring them too, to make sure they get along with the dog or cat up for adoption. 2. CONSIDER LIFESTYLE FACTORS If your loved one is older or has health challenges, a grown pet might be a better fit. Conversely, a young energetic puppy might do better with a family that has a big yard. Be sure to consider family members’ allergies too. 3. PREPARE YOUR HOME AHEAD OF TIME Certain holiday decorations, like tinsel and ribbons, can be hazardous to dogs and cats who chew and swallow them. In addition, poinsettia plants and chocolate are poisonous to pets who eat them. Make sure your home

is safe before bringing your new furry family member home. 4. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE Your new pet will need time to get used to his or her new surroundings and establishing routines will help them feel more secure. Try to feed, walk, and play with them around the same time each day. 5. BE PATIENT The holidays can be stressful for everyone, including pets. If possible, carve out extra time to play or snuggle with them. If your new pet is exhibiting negative behaviors, like scratching furniture or having potty accidents inside the house, ask your vet or an animal advocate for some advice to help them break bad habits.
