CITY OF PHOENIX WATER SERVICES DESIGNING NEW INFRASTRUCTURE THE CITY OF PHOENIX WATER SERVICES DEPARTMENT IS DESIGNING NEW INFRASTRUCTURE TO CONTINUE PROVIDING A RELIABLE WATER SUPPLY TO 1.7 MILLION CUSTOMERS. The additional improvements will include 12 miles of new pipelines, four water booster pump stations, and pressure-reducing valve stations. Project 1 will be located in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves and nearby neighborhoods and includes adding 48-inch and 66-inch pipelines at different segments. Project 2 will run along 32nd Street from Shea Boulevard to Bell Road and will include adding a 66-inch pipeline. Construction will be completed in segments, as to not impact the entire area for the duration of the project. A median project was also previously planned for 32nd Street. Our Water Services Department will coordinate with our Street Transportation Department so that the pipeline is laid down before the medians are installed. Project 3 will run along 35th Avenue from Thunderbird Road to Grovers Avenue and includes a 42-inch pipeline. As part of the City’s preparation for resiliency in a hotter and drier future, the improvements will provide more flexibility to move Salt and Verde River water supplies to areas of the
city that are currently entirely dependent on already over-allocated Colorado River water and are at risk for shortage.
Major upgrades to the water system are needed to allow water to be moved from the 24th Street and Deer Valley Water Treatment Plants to the Union Hill and Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plants to supplement and provide reliable water deliveries. Engineering design for the improvements began in early 2019, and construction is anticipated to occur from early 2020 through the end of 2022, although construction will happen in segments to minimize impact to the areas. In the coming weeks, the Water Services Department will conduct outreach by sending a letter and placing a door hanger for residents, along with sharing information on social media, presenting to community groups, placing signage on streets and trailheads, etc. Learn more about this project, including all the investments Phoenix Water is undertaking to improve water and wastewater infrastructure by visiting www.phoenix.gov/water. PHOENIX ADDS 51,200 JOBS IN SEPTEMBER, UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS THE PHOENIX METRO UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPPED TO 3.8 PERCENT IN SEPTEMBER 2019 FROM 4.3 PERCENT A YEAR AGO, ACCORDING TO THE SEPTEMBER EMPLOYMENT REPORT FROM THE ARIZONA OFFICER OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. Arizona dropped from 4.9 percent last year to 4.5 percent last month. The Phoenix area workforce increased by 51,200 jobs from last year, a gain of 2.4 percent, compared to the U.S. job gain of 1.6 percent in September 2019 over September 2018. There are now nearly 2.2 million in the Phoenix metro workforce, compared to 1.9 million last year. The private sector grew by 2.9 percent and government hiring declined 0.9 percent.
Arizona’s workforce increased by 65,000 jobs to just shy of 3 million, up from 2.9 million in 2019. Nearly 80 percent of the new jobs were created in the Phoenix metro. Phoenix now has two out of every three jobs in Arizona. The record-setting pace of new development showed in construction’s sector adding 12,400 new jobs, a 9.8 percent increase from last year. Construction is still 21,000 fewer jobs than were in the sector in 2007, the high point of construction employment in the Valley. Bioscience healthcare added 9,900 jobs in year-overyear growth of 3.7 percent. The professional scientific and technical services sector added 4,600 jobs in September, also a 3.7 percent increase from a year earlier.
Manufacturing hiring is now starting its fourth consecutive year of job growth. Despite a decrease nationally in hiring by manufacturing concerns, companies in Phoenix added 8,300 jobs in September, a 6.5 percent jump from 2018. September marked the 37th consecutive month of manufacturing job gains. Transportation and warehousing increased new hires by 7,900, a 9.8 percent year-over-year increase. The financial activities sector offset a 1,200 job decline in banking with a net gain of 3,000 new jobs, mostly in insurance and real estate. Restaurants and bars added 2,700 new jobs in September, traditionally a month of declining hiring before the prime season boost.
LOCAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM HONORS FALLEN VETERANS PLEASE JOIN THE PARADISE VALLEY NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA REVOLUTION (PVNSDAR) AND HELP SPONSOR THE WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM. The PVNSDAR chapter has sponsored veteran memory wreaths for the Wreaths Across America Program for several years and is a fundraising and sponsoring group for it. The event is a wonderful way to remember our fallen Veterans, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom. In 2007, the Worchester family of Harrington, Maine along with veterans and others who had helped with their annual Christmas Wreath ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, formed Wreaths Across America. The goal was to continue and expand this effort and
support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. In 2018, Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers laid over 1,800,000 memorial wreaths at nearly 1,440 locations in the United States and beyond. This was accomplished with help from over 3,270 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, donations of trucking and shipping plus thousands of helping hands. The annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as “the world`s largest veteran`s parade,” stopping at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to Remember, Honor and Teach!

NEEDLERS: VOLUNTEERS HELPING THOSE IN NEED By Molly Cerreta Smith
WHEN NEEDLERS’ MEMBER DEBBIE PEREY RETIRED A FEW YEARS AGO, SHE DECIDED SHE WANTED TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND WAS LOOKING TO DO THAT THROUGH A CRAFT SPECIFIC TO SEWING OR CROCHETING. As fate would have it, a post on the neighborhood app NextDoor popped up that noted the local Needlers group was looking for new members. “I went to the very next group meeting,” says Perey. Started in 1996 by Mary Tallon and Marj Sherman, who are still active members today, the Needlers is a group of passionate and caring volunteers that create handmade treasures for those in need — including children in valley hospitals such as all the Banner locations and Phoenix Children’s, the VA and County hospitals and the DES Department of Development Disabilities. The organization’s mission is a heartwarming one — “Our gift is simple: human warmth and kindness to others in need. People of all ages are in need of love, kindness and support and we are thrilled to be able to provide that.” To date, there are upwards of 20 women in the
group — many of them in their 80s and 90s yet still graciously giving their time to help others. Of the group, Perey notes, “Everyone is very friendly and our meetings also serve as a social gathering.”
Meetings are held on the second and fourth Friday of every month (except during the summer) at the clubhouse of Desert Sky Mobile Home Park, located at 19802 North 32nd Street. During the two-hour sessions, the ladies crochet items including hats of all sizes, sweaters, blankets and lap blankets, baby booties, child and adult bibs, walker and wheelchair bags, and tote bags and they also stuff dolls and bears with fiber fill. The dolls are specifically designed for doctors to be able to draw on, in an effort to show children procedures that they are going to undergo and help them understand the process and not be afraid. Perey says there is a large table set up with the fiber fill and the bears and dolls that need stuffing, and during the meetings members stuff and talk. “We sit and chat and have formed real friendships,” she says, adding, “The Needlers is really a special group of ladies. We just really want to be of service to the community.” And they are also of service to one another.
The group, many of which live right in the 32nd Street corridor, help one another with various needs such as taking each other to doctors’ appointments. Many of them also get together socially outside of their Needlers’ meeting requirements. Perey adds that they are currently accepting donations of materials as well as new members! “We would love to see some younger faces at our meetings, too,” she says. For those looking to share their skill of crocheting, sewing or simply stuffing dolls and bears, the Needlers need you and are happy to accept new members. A
n autoimmune disease is an illness in which the body attacks itself. Normally, the immune system is able to tell the difference between something foreign such as a virus or bacteria and its own cells. With an autoimmune disease, the immune system is misdirected and begins to fight its own tissues. This results in an inflammatory process that can lead to a number of symptoms. Often times these symptoms can be non-specific and difficult to identify.
Autoimmune disease can affect many body systems such as the thyroid tissue in Grave’s Disease or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the gastrointestinal system such as Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, the musculoskeletal system in Rheumatoid Arthritis, and the skin in Psoriasis, just to name a few. Autoimmune disease can have a genetic component as well as be triggered by environmental factors such as stress, infections, hormonal influences, nutrient deficiencies, diet and lifestyle. Often times medications are given to suppress the immune system so that it lessens the attack on itself. In Naturopathic Medicine, the focus is to identify the root cause of the illness.

DIET: Our gut and how we digest and absorb nutrients are a primary focus in most autoimmune diseases. Diet is a standard baseline. We focus on low inflammatory foods which include nutrient dense vegetables and fruits such as dark leafy greens and berries. These are packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients which can inhibit the inflammatory pathways that are exacerbated in autoimmune disease. Foods high in healthy fats such as cold-water fatty fish, walnuts and avocados can help decrease inflammation. We also focus on diets low in processed foods, added sugars and refined carbohydrates. These types of foods can aggravate inflammation thus making the attack on the body stronger. It is also important to stay away from any food sensitivities and allergies as these will produce more inflammation in the body. Common food sensitivities with autoimmune disease are dairy, wheat and eggs. STRESS: There is a strong correlation between stress and autoimmune diseases. Stress can come in many forms and for someone with an autoimmune disease, it is essential to control the levels of stress - physical, mental and emotional. Stress will negatively affect
the immune system and can lead to more misfiring of those elements that flare up the autoimmune illness. Supporting the individual with lifestyle changes to reduce stressors is very important.
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES: Foundational work is essential for anyone with an autoimmune disease or family history of autoimmune disease. Nutrient deficiencies are common and if corrected can protect and strengthen the immune system. It is helpful to have these levels tested for proper supplementation. With the focus on diet, lifestyle, nutrient deficiencies and supplementation it is possible to shift the immune response and go into remission. veryone feels stress at one time or another; it’s a part of living. A 2017 Gallup study reported that 79 percent of Americans “feel stress sometimes or frequently during the day.” Additionally, 41 percent of adults say they lack time to do all they want and 44 percent frequently feel stressed.

ric and Tabatha White joined HopeKids in June 2017 after their daughter, Raven, age 4, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia - a type of cancer that affects white blood cells and is the most common form of childhood cancer in the U.S.
“After the initial shock, the child life specialist at the hospital brought us a binder detailing organizations, resources and support groups,” Tabatha said. “She emphasized that our family should join HopeKids.” HopeKids provides ongoing events and activities for families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition, such as cancer. Each month, they schedule a variety of sporting events, live performances, museum visits or other types of fun activities for the whole family. “Raven spent much of the time since her diagnosis in the hospital,” Tabatha said. “I had no idea how difficult it would be for her brothers, Roman and Taj. [HopeKids] provided a special evening for the two to spend time together that we could never have afforded with the increasing medical expenses.” Shortly after joining HopeKids, Tabatha couldn’t believe how incredible it was to meet another family with a daughter near the same age as Raven and a similar diagnosis. The two families met through HopeKids’ online forum and made a point for the two girls to meet once Raven was out of the hospital. “When Lily and Raven met for the first time, they pointed to each other’s nearly bald heads and hugged,” Tabatha said. “We all knew we had met someone else who gets it.” HopeKids strives to keep kids focused on the future, looking forward to the next fun event around the corner, rather than dwelling on what north32ndnews.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING KIDS HOW TO BE THANKFUL AND GENEROUS By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
T
his time of the year, we stop to reflect on all the things that make us thankful. A roof over our head when so many are homeless, food in our stomachs when so many go hungry, and the love of friends and family when so many are alone. As parents, it’s so important to pass on our values to our children, and help them understand why we should be thankful for what we have, even when life has difficulties. There are many ways to encourage your kids to be thankful, but one of the best ways to show them why is by giving back to others who are in need. Here are some ways that you and your family can embrace the spirit of giving thanks and give back to people who are less fortunate than you.

DONATIONS AND GIVING It’s important for kids to feel like they are helping when you talk about giving back and being thankful. One way they can help is by donating old books, toys and clothes, and by helping you give items to people less fortunate than you. Let your kids help you pick out the items to donate and pack them up, then take them with you to drop off the donated items. Here are a few organizations that collect special holiday donations in the Valley: • Salvation Army Christmas Angels • Toys for Tots • Food Banks and collection boxes at grocery stores VOLUNTEERING You can set an example of generosity for your kids by taking time to volunteer with organizations that help others. Donating your time is a great way to actively demonstrate how it feels to help people in need, and will let kids gain a sense of pride that they are helping out. Here are a few suggestions for places to volunteer your time: • Local Food Banks • Nearby nursing homes and retirement communities • Community clean-up activities • Homeless shelters • Local churches PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS Another great way to get kids involved is to participate in charitable events and fundraisers as a family. Non-profit organizations hold walks, fundraisers, and events to raise money for charities all year long. There are really too many events to list here, but you can easily search by organization, date, or cause to find the activities that will work best for your family. Consider cause, distance, cost or fundraising requirements, time of day, and the day of the week when you do your research. There are endless ways to give back and tons of places in the Valley of the Sun that need your help. Do your homework, get your kids involved, and make it a point to give back and be thankful this year. ARIZONA LAW GIVES VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE A NEW HOPE By Robert E. Pastor t can take decades for survivors of child sexual abuse to share their secret and break the silence. Arizona law now recognizes that victims of sexual abuse need time to process and understand what happened to them.
conclusively shows people with a history of childhood sexual abuse have an increased risk of major depression, suicide attempt, alcohol or drug dependence, social anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, rape after the age of 18 and divorce throughout their lives.
Adults who have suffered child sexual abuse may experience a variety of symptoms throughout their lives or in chronic episodes. Survivors of sexual abuse often suffer deep seeded shame, guilt and self-blame that often leads to depression and anxiety. Survivors of abuse may develop a belief that they caused the sexual abuse or that they deserved the abuse. No child causes or deserves to be sexually abused. These beliefs may lead to self-destructing or sabotaging relationships. As children and as adults, survivors of sexual abuse may experience intrusive or recurring thoughts, nightmares or even flashbacks about the abuse. Research

The complexities surrounding child sexual abuse and the trauma that victims endure is just one reason why Arizona changed the statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse. A statute of limitations is like a legal stopwatch that counts down the time to file criminal charges or a civil lawsuit. There are often different statutes of limitations for different types of cases. It is important to know when the clock starts ticking, when the clock stops ticking and whether anything restarts the clock. The new law in Arizona gives victims of child sexual abuse more time to take legal action and for some victims, it restarts the clock - but for a limited time. The new law now gives victims until age 30 to file civil suits; an additional 12 years. The new law also restarts the statute of limitations clock for victims of
child sexual abuse. Under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse have until December 31, 2020. It does not matter how long it has been or how old a victim is, under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse can take back their voice and seek the justice they deserve. By taking action against perpetrators and the institutions that covered for them, victims can expose perpetrators and expose the cover up. CHANGES IN THE LAW One change that can make a difference in your plan isn’t even something you brought about. Federal or state laws may change, necessitating a change to your plan. In Arizona, the trust code changed in 2008. If your Trust was put in place before 2008, a review is a very good idea, because the law on which it was based is now very different. In addition, the federal estate tax exemption is now $11.4 Million per person. Your estate plan might have been put in place when the exemption was much lower, and you needed a complex plan to avoid the 40 percent estate tax. Now, you may not need that complex planning, and putting a far simpler plan in place will make it easier for your surviving spouse and children to administer. THE BIG FOUR OF LIFE EVENTS – MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, BIRTH AND DEATH It seems obvious that if you get divorced, you need to change your plan. Yet often, a client comes to me years after marrying with a plan that doesn’t even mention their spouse. I’ve also had to console the spouse who finds out too late that her husband failed to change his will, and also forgot to change life insurance or IRA beneficiaries. When you leave a marriage, put new estate planning documents in place. If you are getting married, it’s important to put a plan in place too. Now you have a spouse to consider in the mix. HIRING THE WRONG PEOPLE? MAYBE YOU’RE ASKING THEM THE WRONG QUESTIONS
A
company’s intention in a job interview is to find the person who best fits a particular position. But recent research has shown that quite often, the candidate who was hired failed, and usually their exit was related to attitude issues that weren’t revealed in the interview.
“You want to get to know the candidate’s personality in the interview. In a normal setting, you would have about one hour to do this. But some traditional interview practices waste this precious time, and you can miss out on great talent and instead hire a mediocre one.”
That raises the question: Are interviewers asking the wrong questions — and consequently hiring the wrong people? Alex Zlatin, CEO of Maxim Software Systems (alexzlatin.com), says some styles of interviewing are outdated, thus wasting time and resources while letting better candidates slip away.
Zlatin offers the following interview approaches to help HR leaders, recruiters and executives find the right candidate:
“It still astounds me to meet HR professionals who lack the basic skills of interviewing,” says Zlatin, author of the book Responsible Dental Ownership. “In 2019, ‘tell me about yourself’ is still a way to start an interview, and that’s absurd. The only thing you get is people who describe the outline of their resume, which you already know.
• Make it a two-way conversation. Zlatin says traditional interviewing focuses too much on the candidate’s skills and experience rather than on their motivation, problem-solving ability, and willingness to collaborate. Thus, he suggests configuring the interview in a non-traditional, informal way to gain insight into the candidate’s personality. “Rather than make most of the interview a rigid, constant questionand-answer format that can be limiting to both sides, have a two-way conver-
sation and invite them to ask plenty of questions,” Zlatin says. • Flip their resume upside down. “Surprise them by going outside the box and asking them something about themselves that isn’t on their resume or in their cover letter,” Zlatin says. “See how creatively they think and whether they stay calm. You want to see how a candidate thinks on their feet — a trait all companies value.” • Ask open-ended questions. Can this candidate make a difference in your company? Zlatin says answering that question should be a big aim of the interview. “Ask questions that allude to how they made a difference in certain situations at their past company,” Zlatin says. “Then present a hypothetical situation and ask how they would respond.” • Don’t ask cliched questions. Zlatin says some traditional interview questions only lead to candidates telling interviewers what the candidate thinks the company wants to hear. “Interviewers should stop asking pointless questions like, ‘Where do you see yourself
in five years?’ “ Zlatin says. Or, ‘Why do you want to work for this company?’ Candidates rehearse these answers, and many of them are similar, so that doesn’t allow them to stand apart.” • Learn from the candidate’s questions. The questions candidates ask can indicate how deeply they’ve studied the company and how interested they really are. “A good candidate uses questions to learn about the role, the company, and the boss to assess whether it’s the right job for them,” Zlatin says. • Don’t take copious notes. Zlatin says the tendency by interviewers to write down the candidate’s answers and other observations is “a huge obstacle to building a solid two-way conversation because it removes the crucial element of eye contact.” “An effectively done interview allows the employer to get both an in-depth and big-picture look at a candidate,” Zlatin says. “Judging whether they might fit starts with giving them more room to express in the interview.”

GOT MEMORIES: Preserving Memories of the Past with Today’s Technology
H
ailing from England, Phil Thomas, owner and operator of Got Memories, located in the 32nd Street corridor at 3241 E. Shea Boulevard, moved to the valley in 2002. With him he brought the experience and technology of video and film transfer, as he had run a family business in his homeland doing the same thing. Starting fresh in Phoenix, Thomas began working out of his home, offering high quality film and video transfer services around the globe via an online and shipping format. He also began creating educational YouTube videos to help people teach themselves the process, with advice on specific equipment as well as the “pros and cons” of doing it yourself versus sending film and video out to be transferred to updated data mediums including DVDs, flash drives and, of course, the Cloud. “I’ve always just tried to be as
By Molly Cerreta Smith helpful as possible to people in this industry and to those who need this service through education-based marketing and offering first-class customer service, as well as highquality transfers,” says Thomas. From his home office, Thomas opened a retail location at 35th Street and Shea to offer the local community a more “9 to 5” service versus an online send-away format. “I wanted to start catering to people that live in the neighborhood. So we can help people that are 300 steps away or 30,000 miles away,” he adds. Though Thomas receives boxes from all over the world including South Africa and Australia, he enjoys seeing the local traffic from the neighborhood. “We are around the corner and around the globe – we can literally touch all four corners of the globe,” he says. That location wasn’t bringing in the local traffic because Got Memories

was mostly online based at that time. However when he wanted to get exposure to the community, Got Memories relocated to 32nd Street and Shea. Thomas enjoys several things about his new brickand-mortar location. A resident of the neighborhood, he boasts that his commute is a mere 30 seconds, and he also enjoys the business community in the area. He says the recent opening of a UPS store nearby has greatly impacted his business. Admitting the tactic of putting just a little sign out to attract the foot traffic from UPS has really helped him get additional exposure. Another nearby business, the local Press Coffee has been a “gamechanger” for Thomas and his business as well. When the coffee shop opened up, Thomas admits he “networked like mad” with other coffee-lovers and says he has met so many talented techie people working
out of that coffee shop. He also admits that their coffee is pretty darn good. “I’m a coffee snob and I used to make my own coffee every morning, but now I go in every day and get my coffee there,” Thomas says of Press, which he adds brings a different caliber of clientele to the area. “The neighborhood is really evolving. It’s more of a community now and people are just really open to start talking or working out a trade between businesses,” he says. Got Memories prides itself on high-quality transfer from any media as far back as the 1920s. They can handle any type of format from the original 16mm format to anything from that period on, and they not only work with individuals and families to preserve their memories, they’ve also worked with corporations, educational facilities north32ndnews.com

The company can convert old film and video formats including beta max, camcorder formats, VHS, slides, all film formats, photos, audio and even items that other companies say they can’t do. “We’re converting footage from the last 100 years into usable formats for today,” Thomas says, adding, “Some companies won’t work with damaged to deteriorated film but we’ve been able to transfer it with great quality results.” Thomas says they get a lot more personal requests than corporate clients, which has led to some very heartwarming stories. “There was one customer who found some old reels from the 1950s and 1960s that they were going to just throw away because they tried going to Costco to get them transferred, but Costco couldn’t do it,” he says. “When we were able to transfer everything, she was so happy she burst into tears.” Got Memories can transfer items onto DVDs or USB, in Dropbox, or permanently into the Cloud so it is safe and accessible forever. They also handle all phases of transfers in-house — the medium never leaves the facility. The service also includes organization so that everything is neatly organized into folders. “With all the streaming devices available today, you can watch an old movie from your cell phone or share it with longtime friends as a text message. It’s cool to think that a video shot in the 1980s can now be sent via text,” Thomas says. He reveals they have seen some very cool old footage over the years and if they come across interesting footage, they submit it to local historical societies. “Everyone has old films or movies laying around that hold their memories and they are just waiting for the right opportunity to do it,” Thomas says of having old movies transferred to modern media. “Some people even purchase software to do it themselves, but it can take a long north32ndnews.com
time and feel overwhelming if people have 50 videos tapes or they try to do it themselves and it doesn’t come out that well. We can take care of it all for you and I like to think I bring a little English charm to the business,” says Thomas charismatically. That part comes free of charge, of course, and he also says that any footage that comes back blank (many times people submit videos even if they’re not sure what’s on them, if anything), there is no charge. “We don’t nickel and dime people,” he says. “I have a very relaxed, Old School approach to business.” However relaxed in some approaches, the company is also extremely detailed and customerservice oriented. “We have such a caring and conscientious staff that are really good at what they do,” Thomas says, “If there is a problem, we will always fix it. We treat people like we want to be treated as consumers ourselves.” Thomas would like to let local neighbors know that if they have old footage of the 32nd Street and Shea Boulevard area (such as before the 51 Freeway was built), Got Memories will transfer it for free and feature it on their social media channels as a fun community engagement outlet. As another way to bring the community together, Got Memories and neighboring business local crafting-event shop Craft Nights are teaming up to offer viewing and craft nights where family and friends can do a craft together as they watch home movies. Thomas says he also intends to use these events as a way to educate people about the media transfer process to help those feel more comfortable with the idea of giving up their precious memories — for just a little while. Q. Is window and door replacement a good investment? A. Heat, dust, and an outdated look are the three most consistent reasons why homeowners replace their windows. It’s funny - almost without exception, we go into homes that have sunscreens, drapes, blinds, shades or shutters installed as heat prevention measures. I get it, the windows heat up your home too much! Not only is window and door replacement a good investment, it’s the most important home improvement you can do! The technology available in non-conductive frames and Low-E glass can cut over 90 percent of that heat coming in. Your cave dwelling days are over! Not only will you save on your cooling costs, new windows and doors will extend the life of your air conditioner as it certainly won’t have to work as hard. New home builders usually leaned towards really cheap solutions when it came to windows and doors, and you’ve no doubt felt the lack of efficiency. There is also the whole other side to new windows - the aesthetic appeal. We’ve had many homeowners that said
we’ve “remodeled their home with new windows and doors.” Many homes we see have resort-style backyards or amazing Arizona territorial views. We can help enhance those stunning views with better window and door styles, changing frame colors, and even enlarging openings.
Q. How do I know which frame material is best for my home? A. Most windows that were installed in new homes over the last 40 years in Arizona have aluminum frames. Aluminum, as a material, is a conductor which means it actually helps heat flow into your home. The first step to eliminating the heat from your windows is getting rid of the aluminum. With that in mind, there are three basic non-conductive frame materials for you to choose from; vinyl, vinyl/wood fiber composite or fiberglass. Both vinyl and vinyl/wood fiber composite are thermoplastics. Thermoplastics have the property of softening when heated. This is hyper-intensified with high sun exposure and glass pressure weight usually associated with larger windows. It’s not a matter of if, but when plasticbased frames will eventually sag, warp, and discolor. Fiberglass is a thermoset. When it is heated or cured, it permanently becomes hard and rigid. Fiberglass is 8x stronger than vinyl and 3.5x stronger than vinyl/wood fiber composites. It’s really simple…fiberglass is engineered to take heat much better than plastic.

ell the weather is certainly cooling down now and we are all spending more time outside these days. Why not take advantage of the cooler weather and plan your big Turkey Day event around your patio and your grill? (gas, wood, charcoal), it’s time to pick that favorite recipe. And being that it’s November, many of us are thinking turkey. One of our favorite ways of cooking a turkey is to brine it overnight and then cook it to a golden, crispy perfection with juicy meat. HERE ARE SOME TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THAT PERFECT THANKSGIVING TURKEY: 1. Start with brining your turkey. If you want guaranteed great flavor, 5280 Culinary Brine Kits are the ticket – and convenient too – just add water and follow the directions. 2. While the turkey brine helps moisten the meat, the skin needs to be nice and dry in order to get that crispy finish. When you remove the bird from the brine, remember to let the cavity drain well. Rinse the bird and pat it dry. Dry skin = golden skin.

3. Let it rest. If you have the time after letting it brine overnight in the fridge, you can also let it air dry in the fridge one more night. Place the bird on a baking sheet lined with a cooling rack so the bird is elevated and not sitting in liquid, and let it air dry overnight. The skin will air out, while retaining the bird's internal moisture. 4. Cooking the bird evenly is key. Any of the grills mentioned above are ideal because you can control the temperature and it’s designed to circulate hot air – no need to worry about tying up the wings and thighs!

Due to carryover cooking, we recommend pulling your bird off the grill at 5-10 degrees F below the target finished temperature. As the bird rests, the internal temperature will rise, level out, and then begin to drop as it cools. When it levels out is where you want to hit your target temp. If you were to pull it at 165 degrees F exactly, it could rise as much as ten degrees during the rest resulting in a sad, overcooked bird. For a finished turkey it's best to aim for 165 degrees F in the breast and 175 in the thigh. Use caution when taking the internal temp to stay away from the bones as this will give you inaccurate reading.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… My day usually starts with a fresh cup of coffee at 5 a.m., taking in the Phoenix Preserve mountain views and sunrise. I like to be in my office early, turn on some good tunes and power out about two hours of productivity before climbing at Black Rock Bouldering or hittin’ the gym. I run a pre-checklist of all my gear and then head out to film or shoot still photography for the day. Being a Part 107 Certified Drone Pilot makes my days interesting and different every day. I work with the FAA and Air Traffic Control on a consistent basis and every job site I’m on is different. It keeps things new and interesting which I love.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… the community, the proximity we are to hiking and biking trails and just the allaround central location to everything Phoenix has to offer.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… Being in the production industry this is tough because I watch a lot of movies and have so many favorites, but I have always been a fan of the original Oliver Stone’s 1987 Wall Street. Yes, he did some insider trading, but the movie inspires me with his persistence to “Bag the Elephant” client. I love film and how it can bring an emotional response out of people. MY FAMILY… Has been super supportive of me my whole life. We grew up in Texas and were always a very close family. I have a younger
sister that moved to NYC to follow her dance career dreams and parents who love living off their land north of Dallas, watching buffalo and horses roam all day. My family is the backbone of who I am today.
THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… Trying to take on everything myself. When I launched Flying Robot in 2016 (and like most entrepreneurship endeavors), budgets are tight, so you try to take on everything yourself to cut costs - accounting, biz dev, photography, filming, editing, etc. I finally was able to outsource what I don’t want to do, which lightens my load to concentrate on what I am good at, which is the creative side of things. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… Cheat Meals. I am super into fitness and eating healthy but when I get to eat Lou Malnati’s on a Friday night, I am not going to turn down a 300+ calorie slice. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A Pro Snowboarder. I actually started to compete and was sponsored but never closed the deal and then followed my love of Photography and Film. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My girlfriend Robin. She knows the ins and outs of my daily grind and everything I do, is my best friend and the woman who I fell in love with. She has pushed me out of my comfort zone flying drones to get that perfect shot, go farther, get closer and not to let anything stand in my way. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Our dogs. We have two labs and anyone who knows dogs knows they just do ridiculous things. They literally have me smiling and laughing on a daily basis no matter how my day is going. MY FIRST JOB WAS… A “Sandwich Artist” at Subway, which lasted about two weeks, I think. Then I

sold skis in a Texas ski shop. I actually had a guy come in and ask me if he had to buy both skis once. MY LIFE… Is different every day. I work all over the state and occasionally out of state, but nothing is ever the same. I love that. My life, in and out of work, is pretty much like a Choose Your Own Adventure Book. I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… The latest craze is cinematography with FPV (first person view) racing drones. You can pull maneuvers that you can’t with your standard drone equipment. We are offering FPV racing drone services starting January 2020 which will let us through tighter spaces and implement different dynamic shots. We also have shot drone footage for Discovery Channel covering the Border a while back, filmed for Spotify on a Jake Owen segment, a documentary called Evil Dead that is launching in February and a pilot for NBC called Prism that I believe Netflix is looking at purchasing. Our day to day operations include construction progress around the valley as well as shooting the majority of Westgate Entertainment Districts marketing videos. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE TO… I have always wanted to go to Africa. Victoria Falls, Safari in the Ngorongoro Crater in Kenya and then a beach R&R stop at the Seychelles. HISTORY, NATURE, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
J
ust north of the Mexico border and a bit south of Phoenix you can find a part of the state that is steeped in history, beautiful terrain, and fascinating sights to visit. Southern Arizona is a great place for a weekend getaway, and an ideal location to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals heading to locations further north. The gateway to Southern Arizona is Tucson, which is a destination unto itself, but a little further south you can find many interesting small towns, national and state parks, historic sites, and local artists and wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorite Southern Arizona towns and the must-see places to visit when you go. BENSON The first stop on our list is Benson, Arizona. A tiny town of about 5,000 people, Benson is the first major stop on the highway past Tucson. The town was founded as a railroad terminal and a stagecoach station, serving as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way through the southern part of Arizona. It’s historical status as a “pit stop” for tourists passing through remains to this day. One of Benson’s key features, however, is that it is also the home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. This world-class Arizona State Park features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. The
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course, touring the caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance as tours book up quickly. SIERRA VISTA A bit further down the road, past Kartchner Caverns on Highway 90, you’ll find the town of Sierra Vista. Much closer to the border of Mexico, Sierra Vista is a larger community with a population of around 44,000. The Hummingbird Capital of the World, Sierra Vista has a more temperate climate than Phoenix, with beautiful mountain views, big skies, and tons of Old West history. As one of the key settings for many of the popular Joanna Brady novels by J. A. Jance, this idyllic area is a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors and hike one of the many Southern Arizona “sky islands.” Sierra Vista is also adjacent to the historic U.S. Army base, Fort Huachuca. Constructed in 1877, Fort Huachuca was one of several forts established to protect southern Arizona against the legendarily ferocious Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. It was also headquarters of the famed 10th Calvary, also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” The fort is still an active Army base today, but you can

visit the historic district and see many of the notable Old West structures still standing. TOMBSTONE One of the most well-known small towns in Southern Arizona is Tombstone, located down Highway 80, south of Benson. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. With a population of less than 1,500 people, Tombstone is still one of the most popular places for Arizona tourists to visit and experience a true taste of western history. Visitors can see a reenactment of the showdown at the O.K. Corral, visit Boot Hill Cemetery, or stop in the historic Rose Tree Inn Museum. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. If you’re looking for a trip to one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, this is it. BISBEE Further south down Highway 80, about 10 miles north of the Mexican border, is the small town of Bisbee. A cultural
mecca for artists, the historic mining town is home to about 5,600 people with charmingly restored Victorian homes, galleries, museums, and historic sites throughout the town. The Queen Mine was one of the richest copper mines in history and is still a popular spot for visitors. WILCOX One of our favorite stops as we travel further west on I-10 towards New Mexico is Wilcox. A small town of not quite 4,000 people, Wilcox is known as southern Arizona wine country. An agricultural oasis, the Wilcox area produces almost 75 percent of the grapes grown in Arizona, and grows more wine-making grapes than any other region in the state. This small railroad town is also the gateway to the Chiricahua National Monument, known for its fascinating rock formations and mountain trails. Located at the convergence of the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre, Sonoran Desert, and Chihuahuan Deserts, Chiricahua is one of most unique National Park sites to visit in the state. Southern Arizona is a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique, historical places and natural wonders to experience. MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal
IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON
A police detective tries to figure out a series of similar murders that occur every nine years. Combining sci-fi with more grounded genres like crime can lead to mixed results, but In the Shadow of the Moon is done in a way that is both creative and satisfying. Director Jim Mickle gives a unique look and feel to each decade the film is set. Boyd Holbrook gives one of his best performances as the lead, balancing obsession, sadness and determination in a great way. Michael C. Hall is also enjoyable as his brother-in-law who starts as the “jerk sibling” but slowly becomes more empathetic over time. A little more development behind the killer in question would have been ideal, however the film is still a satisfying piece of pulp with a new take on the genre. *NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.
GEMINI MAN
A retiring assassin is on the run from an organization using a younger clone of himself to try to kill him. Ang Lee gives us an exciting look as to what the future of cinema will be. While I can’t speak for the high frame rate 3D (the viewing was in 2D), the de-aging work is well done. Aside from
one scene, the young Will Smith looks lifelike and highlights the real potential this technology has. The action is also a lot of fun. DP Dion Beebe, working with Lee, captures the intensity and high speed of each scene, including some great one takes. The script, however, is another story. It felt jumbled, thin and has clearly been rewritten multiple times by different screenwriters since the 90s. A good example of an interesting idea that is executed poorly.

In the Tall Grass is a prime example of why some stories should stay in written form. You can only have people walk into grass, wander around and scream for each other for so long before one becomes bored. If the characters have nothing beyond basic traits (concerned brother, mother-to-be, creepy kid, etc.), you have a bigger issue at hand. Great photography, including some interesting incorporations of CGI, can only get you so far. The film doesn’t even have much of the viciousness of the original novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Of the numerous King works that have yet to be adapted, this is one that was unneeded.

oday I had the pleasure of revisiting a restaurant I had already been to multiple times, TapHouse Kitchen in the North 32nd neighborhood. TapHouse is located at 3131 E. Shea Blvd., just west of 32nd Street on the south side of the road. Each

menu item is listed with selected pairings of beer that are meant to complement and enhance the flavors in each dish. If you'd rather put your personal expertise to the test, pick any four of the 40 craft beers on tap and create your own beer flight!
This is TapHouse’s second location, the first of which is in Scottsdale. Their gorgeous glass and brick building is hard to miss and boasts a large, open layout. The décor follows suit, showcasing a modern, industrial vibe. Between their huge bar with TV’s for the sports fans, and an open kitchen for those who want to see what’s going on with their food, there is something for everyone. The staff is not something to be overlooked either. They are extremely friendly and helpful from the moment I walked through the door. As for the food, the website says they center around American cuisine, however they make sure to include some pretty tasty dishes from around the globe as well. Popular dishes include calamari, chimis, Thai lettuce wraps, lamb, sliders, steaks, pizza and salads. It’s hard not to find something to make your mouth water in anticipation. I ended up deciding on the Prime New York Steak. Why just choose a steak when there were so many options? Five words…. Makers Mark maple bacon glaze. Not only was the steak and glaze to die for, it came on a bed

the outside while still being soft on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. Not being a man of compromise when it comes to quantity or quality when going out to eat, I can honestly say that I was very satisfied with both. The meal was just enough that I had to think about finishing it or taking it home, and did not disappoint in flavor.
I don’t typically spend too much (or any) time discussing what I drank during a meal, however in this case I thought it important. True to its name, TapHouse, has a wide selection of beers on draft (40 according to its website) and in bottle. Pilsners, Lagers, ciders, meads, wheat beers, blonde and pale ales, IPAs, Ambers, red and brown ales, porters and stouts…the list is long and filled with both local brews and national favorites. For tonight I went with a Big Moose Drool – the perfect end to a perfect meal.
