Interested in Naturopathic Medicine?

By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician

Have you heard of naturopathic medicine? Are you thinking about exploring naturopathic medicine as a supportive part of your health care journey? If so, here is some detailed information to see if naturopathic medicine may be the right fit for you.

WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?

Naturopathic medicine is a specific type of primary health care that concentrates on whole patient wellness. The role of a naturopathic physician is to diagnose, treat and prevent acute and chronic illness by identifying underlying causes and removing barriers that may be impacting health, rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. This is accomplished together with patients by individualizing care and creating a healing and supportive environment.

HOW IS A NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN TRAINED?

Licensed naturopathic physicians (ND or NMD) are clinically trained primary care physicians who have attended an accredited four-year graduate level naturopathic medical school. Education in basic sciences is similar to an MD, however a naturopathic physician also studies holistic approaches to therapy with an emphasis on optimizing wellness and disease prevention. In addition to the standard medical curriculum, botanical medicine, clinical nutritional, psychology and counseling are studied. A naturopathic physician must take professional science and clinical board exams in order to be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care physician.

DO NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIANS ACCEPT INSURANCE?

In the state of Arizona, naturopathic physicians are not typically contracted with insurance, however, there are options for patients with private insurance. If insurance allows, necessary paperwork for Out-ofNetwork claims can be provided. Patients may also be able to use HSA/ FSA for visits. Routine bloodwork can often be ordered through most insurances.

WHAT DO NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIANS TREAT?

As a naturopathic physician I treat a wide variety of conditions. I treat both children and adults for many conditions. These can include general wellness exams, allergies, and dermatological conditions such as eczema, gastrointestinal issues, autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, adrenal health, and acute conditions. All treatment is based on you as an individual with the main goal to remove obstacles that may be impacting health.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT?

Your first visit is up to 90 minutes. We begin by discussing your health history in great detail, focusing on diet and nutrition, exercise, lifestyle and social/emotional factors. We will use diagnostic tools along with physical exam and targeted laboratory testing and imaging depending on your individual case. All treatments are individualized and tailored to your goals, lifestyle and health needs. Why see a naturopathic physician? A naturopathic physician may be a good fit for you if you want to actively participate in your own health. We work together to learn what your body needs to get well and stay well. My patients feel empowered and hopeful when they understand their health conditions and are actively engaged in the healing process. It may also be a good fit for you if you have tried conventional routes without improvements or need addition or alternative support for acute and chronic conditions.

Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.
