CUTTING-EDGE WATER CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGY TO BE PILOTED IN PHOENIX THE CITY OF PHOENIX WATER SERVICES DEPARTMENT, RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT IS THE RECIPIENT OF AN APPROXIMATELY $100,000 GRANT BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION FOR AN INNOVATIVE WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM. The grant will allow Phoenix Water, in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), to pilot new technology to reduce lawn water usage between 40 and 45 percent, based on results experienced in California.

“When you live in a desert city, it’s essential to explore innovative ways to conserve water for future generations,” said Phoenix Water Services Director Kathryn Sorensen. “With the successful completion of the pilot, there is potential to extend the technology to other areas within the City of Phoenix.”

The pilot will be performed on 12 acres of existing soccer fields near ASU-West in Phoenix, owned by the City and ASU. The process involves injecting water-absorbing polymers (known as “hydrogel”) below the root zone of existing turf. The hydrogels can absorb up to 400 percent of their weight in water and release up to 96 percent of the water to

the turf, as needed. The injected hydrogels retain the ability of repeating water absorptions and release over a period of 5-7 years.

About 60 percent of water consumption in the arid Southwest occurs during exterior landscaping, JoEllen Alberhasky, Program Manager for Sustainability Practices at Arizona State University said. “We are eager to see if this project produces similar or better conservation results in our climate and soil as compared to California.” She adds, “If so, it will become another valuable tool in addressing the ongoing drought in Arizona.”

The existing soccer fields at ASU currently consume roughly 11 million gallons (34 acre-feet) of water per year at a cost of approximately $63,500. At a 40 percent reduction, 4.4 million gallons (13.5 acrefeet) of water and $25,400 thousand per year will be saved. Additionally, based on a conservative 5-year life cycle for the hydrogel, savings could equate to 22 million gallons (67.5 acre-feet) of water and $127,000 in savings over the life of the pilot.

Application to these 12 acres will take approximately 6-8 weeks.

FINALLY IT’S OCTOBER AND TIME TO START CELEBRATING ALL THINGS FALL — NAMELY THAT RESIDENTS CAN GO OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE ENVIABLE WEATHER! With October comes the fall holidays that make this season so

much fun — including Halloween.

This year, the North 32nd Costume Party is celebrating its fifth year with the return to Crystal Cove Park, located at 2352 E. Christy Dr. in Phoenix.

Part of the “Sheaborhood” for approximately six years, when Allison

Barnett moved to the valley she started this event as a way to celebrate Halloween, get involved in the community and bring neighborhoods and families together. “I hadn’t celebrated Halloween in a while and I just thought it would be fun,” she shares, noting that each year she focuses on how to make the event bigger and better.

At each event, businesses and nonprofits are invited to come out and offer fun activities for the kids such as games, bean bag toss, face painting, water games and of course there is the playground at the park which provides fun activity for the little ones as well. “We like to think of this event as a way for neighborhood companies to promote their businesses but also for families to come out and have a good time.” In addition, there is always a raffle to raise funds for a local non-profit. Vendors often have candy and trinkets to serve as an opportunity for kids to trick or treat too.

of $50 and non-profits just $25, the Annual North 32nd Costume Party is free for guests, and open to families around the valley — not just in the 32nd Street and Shea Boulevard area.

“We are here to build community so we really want to keep community events free,” says Barnett. “And we’re always looking to attract people to our neighborhood by hosting events like this — so the more the merrier. We have so many parks and great families here — it’s a big spectrum of new families, grandparents and we welcome everyone to come enjoy the party.”

Be sure to come dressed your best, as the costume contest isn’t just for the kids! Whole families often get in the spirit with themed costumes and there is even a contest for the four-legged friends who dress their part! This year’s North 32nd Costume Party takes place Saturday, October 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

PINNERS CONFERENCE RETURNS TO SCOTTSDALE NOVEMBER 8 AND 9

he Pinners Conference returns to Scottsdale this fall for two days of crafts, workshops, shopping and more. The event takes place at West World, located at 16601 North Pima Road, on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9, and features more than 100 classes taught by some of the nation’s top experts, influencers and creators as well as an entire shopping

floor representing nearly 300 local and national brands.

“Our goal is to facilitate an inspiring experience,” says Roxanne Bennett, co-founder of the Pinners Conference with Kendall Bennett. “We hope our attendees leave feeling enlightened, encouraged, creative and happy.”

WHAT IS YOUR GUT TELLING YOU?

I

n Naturopathic Medicine, gut health is a primary focus, especially in my practice. Bowel movements are discussed at every visit.

Are they daily and well-formed? Is there constipation or diarrhea? Is there cramping, bloating or gas? These are all common symptoms that patients experience with a digestive disruption.

It is healthy to have at least one wellformed bowel movement each day and it is not normal to experience discomfort. Many patients have some sort of digestive symptom and the goal is to identify the root cause, regulate bowel movements, eliminate discomfort and support healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients.

This is how we start: FOOD: Food is one of the most common causes of inflammation in the digestive system. We focus on the diet in detail to find any foods that could be aggravating digestion. Common foods that upset the digestion are wheat, diary and eggs as well as artificial sweeteners and other food additives.

We can further investigate specific foods with a food sensitivity test, specifically IgG sensitivity testing. When we identify the food(s) that could be causing some upset, we can eliminate them for a certain period of time, heal the gut, and then try the foods again.

Sometimes it just takes a little break from those aggravating foods to heal the gut. It’s like wearing a shoe that causes a blister; you have to stop wearing the shoe for a little while, let it heal and then try the shoe on again.

IMBALANCED GUT FLORA: This can be a major cause of digestive symptoms. Our gut requires a harmonious balance of good and bad bacteria. Stress, food sensitivities and other health conditions can all disrupt the flora and lead to a change in digestion. Prolonged use of antibiotics can also change the digestion and lead to yeast and/or bacterial overgrowth. It is important to support the gut during and after any antibiotic use to ensure that the good bacteria are replenished. We are able to identify any bacterial or yeast overgrowth with specific testing and then treat with proper probiotics and additional support that are tailored towards each patient.

OTHER UNDERLYING CAUSES: Underlying illnesses and other conditions can also affect the digestive system. Thyroid disease can have a direct effect on the digestive system causing constipation or loose/ frequent stools. Autoimmune disease such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease can also cause a disruption in the digestion and lead to symptoms of gas, bloating and irregular bowel movements. Stress levels play a huge role in the digestive system, so lifestyle changes are essential as well. Certain medications can also be a culprit and are investigated if symptoms arise.

Those with skin conditions such as eczema typically improve with digestive support as well.

A complete history, physical and appropriate testing will allow us to piece together all aspects that may be affecting your digestive health.

ALL ARIZONA SCHOOL RETIREES ASSOCIATION: ADVOCATING FOR AND SUPPORTING THE STATE’S FORMER PUBLIC EDUCATION PERSONNEL

F

or those that haven’t heard of the All Arizona School Retirees Association (AASRA), it’s about time you did! The association, with units throughout the state, was initially formed in 1957. However, eight-year member Judy Weber, who also serves as the secretary of the AASRA’s scholarship foundation, says the group has evolved greatly since then.

“It started as just a teacher’s organization,” explains Weber of the Association’s early days. However, today, any public education staff that retires from an Arizona school district — from duty aids and kitchen staff to principals and superintendents — can become a part of the AASRA. “We want people to know that we help advocate for the entire public education staff, not just teachers,” says Weber.

The AARSA acts as a voice for all retired school district personnel, has a presence at the capitol level regarding legislative priorities, and serves to advocate for all Arizona school retirees on issues affecting retirement such as pensions, social security and health plan benefits; issues regarding senior health and well-being including community services and security from abuse and exploitation; and issues affecting public education, students and educators.

With approximately 1,200 current members throughout the 14 units, Weber says the organization could be so much bigger. Future retirees should know that they can join three years shy of their retirement and memberships fees are just $30 per year, which can even be paid through their pensions.

The Northwest Phoenix unit meets at the Deer Valley Airport restaurant on the second Thursday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In addition to discussing issues they would like to focus on, the meetings often include inspirational, motivational, educational and historical speakers — or even speakers sharing unique points of interest on various topics for members to enjoy. Some recent speakers have included Lin Sue Cooney, an archivist from ASU West, a WWII Navajo Code Talker and more.

“We are investing in the future of teachers and our public education personnel,” says Weber of the Association. “We want each of our members to have a voice and an opportunity to serve a leadership role within the Association.” In

addition to meeting once a month, the AASRA holds an annual two-day convention that includes speakers of influence, a raffle fundraiser, a banquet dinner and entertainment.

You can help turn homework into a positive experience for your child by establishing a few consistent guidelines that will ensure academic success and confidence. Here are a few tips to ensure homework is a positive experience for your child, as well as for you.

TAKE A BREAK BEFORE YOU GET STARTED Rather than diving straight into homework after an exhausting day, give your child 30 minutes to unwind enjoy a healthy snack, and maybe stretch their legs after sitting all day. Especially helpful for younger children, the break allows them to avoid feeling attacked by homework routines the second they walk in the door.

ESTABLISH CONSISTENT HOMEWORK/STUDY TIMES Set aside a consistent time each day to study and complete homework. If your child attends an after-school program, have him or her start homework there and check it at home.

HELP WITHOUT DOING THE HOMEWORK Offer assistance when your child needs it. If your child is having trouble with a math concept, find a YouTube video that your child can view. As a parent, you shouldn’t complete your child’s homework assignments. Plan ahead and make sure that your child has enough time to complete bigger projects.

CHECK YOUR CHILD’S HOMEWORK Offer to review your child’s work for accuracy before it’s due. Go over any items that your child may have missed. Ask your child how he or she got that answer. It’s always a good idea to double-check work before it’s turned in.

Pumpkin Patch Season Has Arrived!

TIPS FOR PUMPKIN PATCHING IN YOUR FAVORITE ARIZONA PATCH OF PUMPKINS

T

emperatures are slowly starting to drop, leaves are beginning to change in Northern Arizona, and everywhere you look are pumpkin patches, fall festivals, haunted houses, costumes, and spooky decorations. Autumn is officially arriving in Arizona and one of our favorite ways to celebrate and enjoy the season is to visit one of our many local pumpkin patches.

We’re sharing our inside knowledge and some of our best tips for visiting pumpkin patches here in the Sonoran Desert.

TIP 1: REMEMBER YOU ARE IN THE DESERT Many people who currently live in the Valley of the Sun are transplants from other parts of the country, so our most important tip for anyone planning to make the trek to a local pumpkin patch is this: remember that you’re still the desert and that it’s still hot outside! Nope, you’re not in Kansas anymore – or Minnesota, or Wisconsin, or California, or Illinois, or Pennsylvania. Remember that even though fall is in the air and you’re in full pumpkin mode, Phoenix is still a desert. And it’s still hot. It is almost guaranteed to still be hot every afternoon until the week after Halloween, so plan accordingly.

TIP 2: RESEARCH THE VENUE Take time to find the pumpkin patch that will work best for your family. Consider how long you are willing to sit in the car, what activities your kids will enjoy, and how much different pumpkin patches cost. All of them are fun, but there are ranges of activities and price points. If you are all about taking a day trip, plan on heading to a different part of the Valley or outside of Maricopa County. There are some great pumpkin patches in

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier the Tucson and Prescott areas, for example. If you are looking for just a few hours of fun, try something in town a little closer to home.

Generally, pumpkin patches have a somewhat common range of activities for most ages, but some specialize in adult fun too. Watch for extras like haunted houses, music venues, or even beer gardens. In this day and age, most pumpkin patches have a good website or at least a Facebook page. Check out their information before you go to find distance and directions, hours, and prices, as well as to check out what kinds of activities are available on-site. A little planning ahead will make your trip much more enjoyable.

TIP 3: GO EARLY Temperatures are usually quite a bit cooler in the morning, which makes it a great time to get outside and enjoy autumn weather. Typically, the crowds at a pumpkin patch are smaller right when they open, so the lines and wait times are shorter. It’s also easier to maneuver small kids around before lunchtime, when they get hungry. I recommend arriving as early as possible to make the trip more enjoyable for the whole family.

TIP 4: TAKE WATER It’s the desert and you are outside in the sunshine.

Even in cooler temperatures, you need to be sure to drink tons of water. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your beverages at home or trying to rely on food and drink stands at the pumpkin patch.

Sometimes the costs are high, and sometimes they just don’t sell what you need. Be sure bring enough water for everyone in your group, to reduce the risk of running out while you’re there.

It’s always best to be prepared for the trip ahead of time, especially in the desert.

TIP 5: DRESS APPROPRIATELY Whether the venue is a farm or a working ranch, the pumpkin patch will be sitting in an outdoor desert area that is not flip-flop friendly (think dirt, rocks, scrub grass, and cactus). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, socks, a hat, sunscreen, and layer comfortable lightweight clothing. I recommend the type of clothes you would wear hiking as the environment is the same, but cowboy gear is great too. Nothing beats a good pair of cowboy boots at the ranch!

TIP 6: BRING CASH In our experience, there is a really high likelihood of needing cash. Most pumpkin patches are small family farms or ranches, so credit card readers are not always readily available. That has changed gradually over the years, but it’s still best to bring some cash for your pumpkins and snacks, just to be on the safe side. Also, remember that most pumpkin patches are located on the outskirts of town and away from stores and strip malls, so an ATM machine may be a little tough to find.

Visiting a pumpkin patch once fall arrives is a special treat, full of great memories and well worth the trip. There are some great pumpkin patches in all corners of the Sonoran Desert, and most of them bring a special Arizona flare to the mix that you just won’t find in other parts of the United States. ESTATE PLANNING BASICS: THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST – PART TWO

ast month I wrote about incapacity planning using the Revocable Living Trust. This time we’ll talk about the advantages such a trust gives your family at your death.

A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST AVOIDS PROBATE AND THE COST OF COURT INTERFERENCE AT DEATH A Trust that holds all of your assets will avoid the need for a probate and the public disclosure of your assets on your death. With a Trust, the person you appoint to wrap up your estate can do so quickly and in private.

They can gather, sell, and distribute your assets to beneficiaries with no court involvement.

A Will requires probate. The person you have designated to wrap up your estate must file an application with the court and be appointed by the court before they can do anything.

Yes, even if your Will says who is to act, it doesn’t give them the authority to do so. Only the court can do that.

The Will doesn’t automatically transfer property either. Instead, your personal representative must be court appointed, and only then can they sign a deed to transfer the property. A probate court proceeding can be both costly and public. Anyone can look at the documents filed with the court.

A Trust provides both privacy and a

much smoother wrapping up of your estate.

OTHER REASONS TO CONSIDER A TRUST Cost: When considering the choice between a Will based estate plan and a Trust based estate plan, consider the cost. My price for a basic probate is more than the average amount I charge for a Trust.

Types of property: If you have real estate, especially more than one property, a trust makes it easier to wrap up the estate.

Out of state property: If you have real property out of state, a trust is imperative. Otherwise, you may end up with two probates: one here, and one in another state.

Family situation: Do your children get along? Do you have children from this marriage and from a previous marriage or relationship? These situations can be fraught with difficulties. With a Trust, we can provide for all the contingencies and be sure your money goes where you want it to when you are gone.

omestic Violence has an incredible impact on an individual’s mental health. Whether experienced or just witnessed chronically, domestic violence activates a threat response system within, which has been proven to have a lifelong impact on mental, physical and emotional health.

There is often a link between early childhood experiences and long-term mental health conditions. The signs range from depression and anxiety to chronic pain and obesity. Other signs may include dissociation, suicidal thoughts, difficulty developing meaningful relationships and/or just a feeling of numbness.

It can be challenging to recognize behaviors, as they are an adaptation to environmental stressors. Many see the behaviors but are unable to see the underlying cause. For example, a child may be a class clown at school and get in trouble for being disruptive, but at home his humorous behavior distracts his parents from arguing. At home, it was effective but in other places, it became detrimental to his success.

THERE ARE STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO PROTECT YOURSELF THAT CAN BE A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH: 1. Know your abuser’s red flags. Come up with several reasons you can use to leave the house if you sense trouble brewing.

2. Identify safe areas of the house. Know where to go if your abuser attacks or an argument starts. Avoid small, enclosed spaces without exits or rooms with weapons (such as the kitchen). If possible, head for a room with a phone and an outside door or window.

3. Come up with a code word. Establish a word, phrase, or signal you can use to let people know that you’re in danger and they should call the police.

4. Be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Keep the car fueled up and facing the driveway exit. Hide a spare car key where you can grab it and go. Have emergency cash, clothing, phone numbers, and documents stashed in a safe place.

5. Practice escaping quickly and safely. Rehearse your escape plan so you know exactly what to do if under attack from your abuser.

6. Make and memorize a list of emergency contacts.

UNDERSTANDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: Abusers often monitor their victim’s activities including their phone, computer, vehicle GPS and Internet use. When seeking help for domestic violence and abuse, it’s important to cover your tracks, especially when you’re using the home phone, a smartphone or a computer.

If you discover any tracking or recording devices or apps, leave them be until you’re ready to leave. While it may be tempting to remove them or shut them off, you don’t want to alert your abuser.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LEAVE: • Get an unlisted phone number.

• Use a P.O. box rather than your home address.

• Apply to Arizona’s address confidentiality program, a service that confidentially forwards your mail to your home.

• Cancel your old bank accounts and credit cards, especially if you shared them with your abuser. When you open new accounts, be sure to use a different bank.

• If you’re remaining in the same area, change up your routine. Take a new route to work, avoid places where your abuser might think to locate you, change any appointments he knows about, and find new places to shop and run errands.

• Consider getting a restraining order or protective order.

The scars of domestic violence and abuse run deep.

The trauma can stay with you long after you’ve escaped the abusive situation. You may struggle with upsetting emotions, frightening memories, or a sense of constant danger that you just can’t kick. Or you may feel numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people. But counseling, therapy, and support groups for domestic abuse survivors can help you process what you’ve been through and learn how to build new and healthy relationships.

Treating survivors of domestic violence requires a trauma informed approach. USING TECHNOLOGY TO BRING HOPE AND HEALING IN THE WAKE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

I

n Arizona, one in four women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. Every 44 minutes, one or more children in our state witness domestic violence. These statistics are startling – If you’re a woman, think about your three closest confidantes. Chances are, one of them has experienced physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse.

Sadly, trauma is the common thread woven throughout many of these stories – including mine. A traumatic sexual assault at the age of 21 left me with damaged self-worth and a dangerous pattern of behaviors that led me to marry an abuser.

After nine years, I eventually got out of that marriage with my two precious children and moved them away so we could start a new life. But eight out of 10 women survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse report significant short- or long-term impacts such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I thought I was handling my situation in the best way I

could by removing my children from it and protecting them. But what I wish I knew then was that that my trauma was being passed on to my daughter and son without any outward signs.

I learned that my brain could be rewired, form healthy neuropathways that took me from hanging-by-athread survival mode to thriving as an advocate for helping others in the depths of despair.

Nine years after my divorce, my beautiful 13-year-old daughter McKenna completed suicide in her bedroom.

I was in the next room. I found her two hours too late.

I want every woman domestic violence and sexual assault survivor out there to have access to this program.

That’s why I started Veronica’s Initiative to fund a research study with the hope of making this program readily available and affordable to any woman, anywhere. The one-year study of 100 women survivors is designed for publication, with oversight and results measured by PhD clinical research psychologists.

The trauma of that loss brought more pain that I thought was possible to bear in this lifetime. It led me to multiple suicide attempts of my own – all I wanted was to be with McKenna.

Ten years later, my son, Noah, died of a drug overdose. I’ll never know whether it was accidental or not.

That’s when I threw in the towel and made a sixth and final attempt at suicide. I ended up in the hospital, where I technically died twice before being revived.

Today I am healthy. After decades of therapy, with temporary and modest results, I was introduced to a unique solution. It took six months to complete – and gave me back my life and my well-being.

The goal is to make this program widely accepted and integrated into the mental health community, plus become part of everyone’s healthcare and insurance benefit package.

Bringing New Mexico Style Flavors to the Neighborhood

L

oveCraft Ale House, Bottle Shop and Smoke Kitchen has evolved greatly in the short time since it opened its doors less than a year ago last December. What started as a beer bar with small bites served on paper plates has evolved into a full service sit down restaurant with community tables, real plate wear and utensils, an expanded menu, more than 130 craft beers (including 25 on tap) and wine and beers available to purchase and enjoy or take to go and lunch service on weekends beginning at 11:00 a.m., events, community collaborations and much more.

As a neighbor in the North 32nd corridor who grew up in New Mexico and moved to Arizona for college, owner Rebecca Golden and her boyfriendslash-business partner Ryan Castillo, who grew up in the area where his parents still live, wanted to open a friendly neighborhood concept. But that’s the cool part. We hope our customers see us as the result of the power of supporting local businesses.”

Since opening, LoveCraft has also expanded its menu, but Golden says it’s still a fairly simple menu using the smoker — and time — to enhance those rich BBQ and New Mexico flavors. Some of the restaurant’s popular items include Green Chile Blanco Queso Dip, Green Chile Burrito smothered in queso, 3-Layer Stacked Enchiladas, Mini Street Tacos, Smoked Bacon-Wrapped

Jalapenos and, of course, slow-smoked BBQ options including brisket, pork, and chicken. Their sauces — including red, green and Las Cruses white — are all house made, and the menu is also very inclusive for those with dietary requests. The marinated Smokey Mushrooms are vegan, and many menu items are naturally gluten friendly including corn tortillas, beans, salads and more to give all diners options.

“We’re so excited for this next phase and to be the only place in the area to offer mountain and sunset views,” says Golden, who feels pride not only in her business — but also a responsibility to the community as a whole. “It’s my duty to help local businesses as much as I can because I know how hard it can be. We always try to collaborate on events with other neighborhood businesses. We all have the same business mentality of bringing people into this neighborhood.” So it makes sense to work together, right? With a background in graphic design and a talent for marketing, Golden also lends these skills to other businesses so they don’t have the burden of trying to recreate the wheel and figure those things out on their own.

Some of their collaborative events with other local businesses include Drag Queen Bingo with The Joy Bus Diner, a non-profit that makes meals for homebound cancer patients and Ping Pong tournaments with local breweries and businesses. LoveCraft is even part of promoting a free neighborhood social run club led by local personal trainer Michelle Fencl. On Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., runners of all skill levels are invited to meet at LoveCraft, do a threemile loop (on foot, bike, skateboard or whatever!) and then return to LoveCraft for food and drinks! On Tuesdays, LoveCraft also hosts Madame Elizabeth who does Tarot Card readings for $5.

The Pop-up Typewriter event takes place Wednesdays with local poet Fadi creating custom poetry for guests on beautiful paper. A donation of $20 is suggested and benefits The Joy Bus Diner. LoveCraft also offers 1/2 priced bottles of wine from 3:00 p.m. to close on Wednesdays, as well as tasting events featuring Young’s Market, which brings new and different wines for guests to try.

“We like to have our customers try different things and we’ll make sure to buy a case of something special that they really like,” Golden says. “We are working towards putting ourselves on the map for our wines.”

Crafty (but not cheesy, Golden points out) events are also offered at LoveCraft including live artists and craft nights such as Bob Ross Day and Beads and Meads; and throughout football season, LoveCraft is open early and offers beer and food specials for game day viewing. Other events include live music; Ice Cream Social Sundays with dessert trucks in the parking lot from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and progressive happy hour every day from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with specials on the food and drink menus changing throughout the course of the happy hour — so at 3:00 p.m. $3 specials are offered, at 4:00 p.m. $4 specials are offered and so on.

Golden also adds that LoveCraft is not just for the 21plus crowd. “We’re really kid friendly and we have board games, ping pong and foosball,” she says. “People and kids can get up out of their seats and be social. It’s just a really comfortable setting for all ages.”

One of the things that Golden notes as a local business owner is the opportunity her customers have to interact directly with her. “If things aren’t executed perfectly or if there is a problem, we welcome feedback. We encourage people to reach out and let us fix the problem,” she says.

t’s that time! Arizona temperatures are finally cooling off a bit and that means we can begin to take our workouts outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Exercising outside provides a host of benefits, from increased energy and mood to jump-starting your thought process and creativity.

On days when your workouts have some flexibility, change things up and go outside. You can use the gym parking lot, a local park, or any other open space that makes sense. Enjoy the sunshine and change of pace.

REASONS TO TAKE YOUR WORKOUT OUTSIDE THE GYM When the weather is nice, getting active outdoors is a mood booster. Here are some of the best reasons to train outside:

Improve Your Mental Health - Exercise is beneficial for mental health, but getting active outdoors is an even bigger boost. Being exposed to sunlight, for instance, improves mood and increases vitamin D levels. It’s not just the sun, though. Mixing it up will keep you motivated.

More Space - If you usually train with a group, the gym can get a little cramped. You may be fighting other groups or individuals working out for space, especially during the summer months. Suggest to your trainer to take the session outside and mix it up for the entire group.

FOOLPROOF WAYS TO TRANSITION EXERCISE OUTSIDE Sometimes you can simply take your indoor work out and do it outside. Other times there may be specific indoor equipment you need that will require some thoughtful adaptations for going outdoors. Or just wing it! It all depends on what you are in the mood for.

Running - There are few workouts simpler than a run. For a cardio day, instead of hitting the treadmill or elliptical, get outside and hit the pavement or dirt trail. It could be just a warm-up jog to start a training session or a more involved cardio workout. For example, you can use running outside as a HIIT workout for big cardio gains and calorie blasting.

Simple Outdoor HIIT Workouts You can also do a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout outdoors by incorporating moves like pushups, high knees, squats and squat jumps, lunges, burpees, bear crawls, planks, and others that don’t require gym any equipment.

Find the Hills - Hill sprints are great for cardio workouts and leg strength.

If you have a hill near the gym, or if you can meet at a park, invite your gym buddies to run up hills with you for a fun, challenging workout. Around the Phoenix area, there are many hiking trails to take advantage of, or you can always find an open field at a community college and/or a park with steps.

Create Obstacle Courses - Turn an outdoor training session into a playground. Create an outdoor obstacle

course using playground structures, lawn games, tires, and whatever else you have. Just make it fun, so you will enjoy it while also improving agility, speed, and strength.

Always Have a Backup - You can plan for the best, most fun outdoor workout, but you can’t control everything. The weather may not cooperate, or you may have a nagging pain and don’t want to risk doing something completely out of the box. Just be sure that you have a backup plan for the weather and listen to your body and modify your workout as needed.

Stay Safe Outside - If you are headed outside for a workout, there are safety considerations and practical factors to keep in mind: • Watch the weather and avoid getting stuck out in a thunderstorm or intense heat.

• If it’s hot outside, make sure you have water and an electrolyte option.

• Bring a hat, sunscreen, and/or bug spray and apply regularly.

• Make sure you’re out of the range of cars and traffic.

• Wear protective clothing in bright colors so that you may be easily spotted.

KARSTEN’S ACE HARDWARE: OVERSEEDING YOUR LAWN

I

t’s that time of year to start thinking about overseeding again!

Overseeding is the process of seeding right over existing turf without tearing up any existing soil. It is ideal to start overseeding when the nightly temperature is consistently 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to overseed to keep your summer weeds at a minimum and it gives grass a head start, allowing the roots to plant firmly before the winter cold hits.

There are only a few simple steps to overseeding your lawn in preparation for the colder season. First, you want to be sure to prep your lawn. Start by mowing the grass at the lowest setting and be sure to bag any clippings. Then you want to rake in order to remove any dead grass, loose soil and debris.

A metal rake is best to ensure the soil is exposed to the seeds. Once your lawn is prepped, you want to be sure to fill your spreader with seed. This process is easiest if you have a rotary spreader. Once you have spread your seeds over your yard, it is time to water. You want to make sure to water daily or as needed for the first two weeks to ensure the soil stays soft.

This is important for prime germina-

tion. Using a water timer or a sprinkler system can help ensure your lawn is watered frequently. Once the lawn starts to grow, you can begin to mow again. From this point on, it is easy lawn maintenance.

edona is a one of a kind place for tourists from all over the world, and a favorite weekend trip for both Arizonans and visitors from out of state. Named the “Most Beautiful Place in the U.S.” by USA Today in 2003, the stunning Red Rock views, tall pines, quaint shops, and beautiful creekside venues make it a charming place for a getaway any time of the year.

We often get questions from Arizona newcomers about Sedona, since it is a favorite of so many people and one of the most frequently recommended locations for people to visit. Here are our favorite spots to see when we head north to Red Rock country.

IN TOWN EXPERIENCE The town of Sedona is full of arts and culture, with shopping, restaurants and sightseeing tours. Whether you are spiritual, artistic, cultural, an outdoor enthusiast, or just plain laid back, Sedona has something for you. Our first stop is usually Uptown, right at the top of the “Y” – the intersection of Highway 89A and 179. It’s a great spot to find a public parking spot and get out to see the local sights. Walk up and down the block for a taste of the Old West town of Sedona’s origins, mixed with

A good place to start is the Visitor’s Center, where you can get great information to plan your visit around town.

One of our favorite in town spots to visit is Tlaquepaque, an outdoor shopping and dining area just south of uptown, with old world charm and an upscale atmosphere. Nestled in the trees on the banks of Oak Creek, the site of Tlaquepaque was once the homestead of Sedona’s original postmaster, Theodore Schnebly. The story goes that Schnebly was tasked with naming the town and, rather than picking his own name, he chose the more beautiful name of his beloved wife, Sedona.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE AND RED ROCK COUNTRY The best thing about Sedona has to be its location in Red Rock country. No matter where you go in Sedona, you have a stunning view of fantastic rock formations like nowhere else. Hiking and biking trails are abundant but be sure to pick up a trail guide or talk to a local park ranger or outfitter before you head out. The views and trails are gorgeous, but it is easy to get lost in the Coconino National Forest wilderness.

Some of the most popular outdoor spots include Slide Rock State Park and Oak Creek Canyon, but these are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Awesome trails and places to explore are everywhere throughout the town and surrounding area. Our favorite place to hike is in Red Rock State Park, just off Highway 89A as you enter Sedona. It has a visitor’s center with great information about the park, trails, local geology, and wildlife, as well as fantastic hiking trails in the Red Rocks and along the creek.

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES One of the things Sedona is best known for is being a spiritual center.

From its origins as a spiritual center for the early Sinagua people who lived there, to the more modern ideas of vortexes and new age spiritualism, Sedona is a popular place to seek spiritual healing of all types. Known for being the home of quite a few vortexes, or places on the earth with a special field of energy, Sedona attracts people from across the globe who want to visit these sites. The four most popular vortex locations are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

It’s also home to churches and houses of worship for almost every denomination. The most famous of these churches is another of our favorite places to visit, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Built on the top of a huge outcropping with a backdrop of Red Rock cliffs, this majestic church was originally commissioned by a local rancher and sculptor, Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel, built on Coconino National Forest land with special permission, was completed in 1956 and remains one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks. Legend has it that it is also known for being the location of one of the strongest and most easily felt premier vortexes in Sedona.

Sedona is a great place to visit all year round. It’s cooler than Phoenix in the summer and warmer than Flagstaff in the winter, with beautiful scenery and outdoor adventure in every season. It’s a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique places to see and experience.

Currently, a record 42 million adults ages 65 and older are driving on America’s roads and this number is expected to increase substantially over the next decade, which would make them the largest driving population.

Most of these potentially inappropriate medications, such as benzodiazepines and first-generation antihistamines, are known to cause impairing effects such as blurred vision, confusion or incoordination, and can increase a driver’s risk for a crash by up to 300 percent.

Additional data from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists shows that 34 percent of older adults are prescribed medications by more than one doctor, possibly bypassing opportunities to check how the new prescription may interact with other medications being used.

A new bride discovers that her groom’s family has a dark secret behind a family ritual.

What I love about Ready or Not is that it gets tons of laughs, not just because of its massive amount of gore or swearing, but because of its staging and slapsticklike comedy. The chaotic and relentless feeling, combined with the editing, gives you the feeling that you’re right there along with Grace (Samara Weaving).

Weaving proves to be a true badass and manages to be a standout in a cast full of incredible performances, including Adam Brody, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell. Ready or Not’s only real issue is that it isn’t a particularly scary film…a difficult thing to swallow in a movie meant to be in the horror genre. The great cast, clever screenplay and well played direction keeps you entertained, nonetheless.

Sweetness is how one can describe The Peanut Butter Falcon - like the lightest Terrence Malick film never made.

Peanut Butter Falcon flows freely from scene to scene, showing our characters taking in their surroundings and simply loving life. Zack Gottasgen is absolutely incredible here. This may also be Shia LaBeouf’s best performance in years and confirms that he can be a superb actor.

The southern-inspired score brings a feeling of authenticity to the film. This film is best described as beautiful.

AD ASTRA

An astronaut travels to the furthest areas of the solar system to find his father, who may be causing electrical signals that could wipe out life in the universe.

Ad Astra will not be for everyone. It takes its time and is not anywhere near as action packed as the trailers suggest. The performances are quiet and at times may come off as bland. However, those quiet performances leant themselves to the beautiful subtlety of the film. It subverts a typical space journey movie, providing an intimate human drama about loyalty and our beliefs versus reality. Combine a gorgeous score by Max Richter and Lorne Balfe with Hoyte van Hoytema’s beautiful cinematography, and Ad Astra is a classic in the making.

27 years after the first film, a now-grown Losers Club returns to Derry to put an end to the returned maniacal clown.

Chapter Two shows that Andy Muschietti is a very exciting filmmaker when given free rein to do whatever he desires. The designs, locations and situations show him to be one of our more creative horror filmmakers of the day. He has a great eye for casting with the adult actors, particularly Bill Hader and James Ransone. “It’s” biggest problem is that, despite the time change and supposedly more mature themes, the movie feels no different than the previous film. We see the same humor and same style; the only real change is that now they’re adults. There seems to be a little less charm here than in the previous film. Chapter Two is visually a decent film, just a bit…. lacking in soul.

CBD 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TRYING

Y

ou’ve heard of it, but do you know what it is? CBD stands for cannabidiol which is just one of over one hundred cannabinoids.

CBD is non-psychotropic (i.e. it does not get you “high” or contribute to the euphoric, mind altering effect associated with THC that is found in marijuana).

There are two primary ‘types’ of CBD; isolate and full spectrum. The isolate is straight from the hemp plant. Isolate is the most common form, typically THC free and used to make tinctures, vapes, topicals and edibles. The full spectrum type will use all the plant has, will include THC and is typically cut with added oils so the THC content is below the legal limit, which is .03% While the FDA does not approve CBD, many people have noted that CBD has a positive impact on reducing chronic pain and inflammation, epilepsy and other types of seizures, sleep disorders, insomnia, anxiety, stress, depression and several other conditions.

There are four main methods of delivery for CBD. The first one is a tincture, which you would hold under your tongue for approximately 90 seconds. This allows the CBD to go directly into the blood stream. The second method of delivery is vaping, which goes into the blood stream, however it is via the lungs. Next is topical, which allows one to treat a localized area that delivers into the blood stream via skin absorption. The last method of delivery is ingestion, which delivers the CBD via the digestive track (ex: edibles).
