CITY NEWS KOVO MODERN MEDITERRANEAN NOW OPEN AT TATUM & SHEA KOVO MODERN MEDITERRANEAN, A RESTAURANT SHOWCASING THE TRADITIONAL CUISINES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION, combined with new world flare and ingredients, opened September 26 at 11 a.m. in Paradise Valley. KOVO is located in the thriving Paradise Village Gateway shopping center on the northeast corner of Tatum and Shea.

Longtime restaurateur, Yianni Ioannou, is spearheading KOVO. With more than 15 years of experience mastering every area of the restaurant, Ioannou’s roots in the industry run deep. He grew

up helping out in his family-owned restaurant in his home country, the island of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. After moving to the United States, he operated several Greek restaurant chains in multiple states. The menu at KOVO has been shaped by Ioannou’s time in Greek restaurants, his travels throughout the Mediterranean, as well as his Cyprian roots.

According to Ioannou, “We are excited to bring to the Valley the simple, delicious flavors and bright spices of the Mediterranean. This area of the globe is a melting pot of cultures and culinary influences. This diversity of cuisine will be showcased at KOVO in a modern, approachable way.”

A unique concept to the Valley, the menu at KOVO highlights a wide selection of cuisine from the Mediterranean region. The Greek word, KOVO, translates “to carve”, and as such rotisserie meats are predominately displayed in the open kitchen and are served in signature entrees. Various selections such as lamb and beef and organic chicken cook vertically on a rotisserie and are carved to order. A wood-fired oven produces crispy pizzas, such as the Napoletana, Blanca, and Della Carne, as well as other wood-fired specialties.

For guests wishing to savor a sampling of Mediterranean cuisine, there are a wide variety of shared plates,

such as housemade hummus and tzatziki, grilled eggplant and Halloumi, sheftalia (homemade Greek sausage), or grilled octopus. In addition, other items found across the region are served, such as bruschetta and cheese boards, as well as lamb burgers, kebabs, and salads. KOVO has a separate takeout area featuring an assortment of homemade sweet and savory pastries, including spanakopita, baklava, and bougatsa, to name a few, plus fresh Greek yogurt creations and coffee.

In addition to signature cocktails and local craft beer, KOVO has a thoughtfully selected Worldly wine menu, featuring wines from New Zealand, Greece, France, Spain, Italy and South Africa, as well as California and Oregon.

The nearly 4,000 square foot restaurant is modern in design, with a light-filled, open and airy feel.

Influences from the Mediterranean can be found in Moroccan-style tiles, rich blue ocean-inspired accents and artistic fixtures. The space seats more than 140 guests, including an expansive outdoor patio, as well as a wrap-around indoor/outdoor bar.

KOVO is open for lunch and dinner daily, and weekend brunch will be introduced in the coming weeks. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

ARIZONA SUNRAYS GYMNAST QUALIFIES FOR

U.S. NATIONAL GYMNASTICS TEAM THERE’S EXCITING NEWS IN THE WORLD OF ARIZONA GYMNASTICS. RECENTLY IN AUGUST, AT THE 2018 U.S. NATIONAL GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD IN BOSTON, 18-year-old Phoenix gymnast, Jade Carey, placed sixth All Around in the prestigious competition and has now qualified to be a member of the 2018 USA National Team. Reigning Olympic champion, Simone Biles, finished in first place in all events. Carey won second place on Floor and thirdin Vault. She was also the 2017

National Vault Champion and World Championships silver medalist on Vault and Floor.

The vault is where Carey is really making a name for herself in the sport of gymnastics. In the 2016 Junior Olympics, her vault - a tucked Kasamatsu full - was entered into the Junior Olympics code of points, forever to be known as “The Carey.”

This hard-working, elite-level gymnast is a 2018 graduate of Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale and has been awarded

a full-ride scholarship to Oregon State University. Carey has decided to defer attending the University until 2020 and train full-time at the Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance Center in Phoenix to prepare for the 2020 summer Olympic games in Tokyo.

Carey’s primary coach and Vault coach is none other than her father, Brian Carey. The gymnast’s other two coaches are Daniel Witenstein, co-owner of Arizona Sunrays, on the uneven parallel bars and Pam Evans for balance beam and floor.

ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PVSCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT JAMES P. LEE, ED.D. ANNOUNCED HIS PLANS TO RETIRE AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR. "Throughout my tenure as Superintendent of PVSchools, I have experienced a level of support most superintendents could only hope for during their careers. I am proud of the collective work we have done to 'cultivate worldclass thinkers' and the genuine level of care and support we have provided our students over the years. I am grateful for the wonderful relationships I have been able to develop and for the incredible memories I will savor for the rest of my life," said Dr. Lee. With 38 years in education, Dr. Lee is highly respected by stakeholders in our District and has a proven track of leading PVSchools for the past 10 years.

Dr. Lee started his career as a high school teacher in Suring, Wis. in 1981. "I am proud to say I will finish my career in the district I consider to be the best in the nation - the district I will always refer to as Paradise," said Dr. Lee. The board will approve his retirement at the Oct. 4 governing board meeting.

This allows the district enough time to recruit and select the best possible candidate and ensures a successful and smooth transition for the future superintendent of PVSchools.

DINING REVIEW: WOOD FIRED PIZZERIA GELATO SPOT

ANOTHER NEW HOTSPOT HAS JUST OPENED ITS DOORS AT 10608 N. 32ND ST (NW CORNER OF 32ND ST. AND SHEA) IN THE NORTH 32ND STREET CORRIDOR. Located in the Paradise Hills Shopping Center, Wood Fired Pizzeria Gelato Spot bring another new local owner and establishment to our bustling and ever-expanding neighborhood.

My business partner and I decided to go and check it out and arrived to a packed parking lot and standing room only during the dinner rush. Access was easy from either Shea or 32nd St. and being a corner location, the restaurant had great visibility both in and out.

The décor is simple, yet clean and modern with an open and airy feeling.

In my opinion, she hit a home run.

The service was excellent, the menu was small yet had enough on it that even the pickiest eaters could find something, from appetizers, to salads, to pasta dishes (half or whole), to great wood fired pizzas made from scratch and a full bar with wine and mixed drinks. Flat screen TVs, wi-fi and large garage doors that open up to outside seating areas create a fun and relaxed environment to enjoy a meal.

It’s great to see local businesses coming into the North 32nd Street community and investing in its growth and future success. I would highly recommend checking out Wood Fired Pizzeria Gelato Spot. They have a bit of everything for everyone.

PROFILE ON LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR: Dave Karsten

MY COMPANY & TITLE IS… Along with my wife Cheryl, we are the owners of Karsten’s Ace Hardware with four valley locations including North 32nd St.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Hopefully, I start my day with a run, then on to work - touring one or more of our stores, meeting with the team, finding new and exciting products, serving our neighbors that shop the store, inventory management, strategic planning, merchandising, planning events, problem solving, IT system work. You know, all the typical work that a small business owner does each day.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… My favorite thing is watching and being a part of the commercial and residential redevelopment along the North 32nd Street Corridor. I grew up in the neighborhood, riding my bike through Dreamy Draw, going to Shea Plaza for movies, eating ice cream at Thrifty Drug. Shadow Mountain Class of ’82. My high school job was working at the Shell gas station at 32nd Street and Shea – right across from where our store is today. There was no SR51, and 32nd Street was the major artery into downtown. The freeway was a welcome addition, however a real killer for businesses up and down 32nd Street. Today, it thrills me to see all the energy here once again and truly appreciate our neighbors supporting their local businesses!

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Hunt for Red October. I don’t know, you’ll have to ask my wife. Every time that it shows up on the channel guide (which is constantly), I have to stop and watch as much of it as I can. Maybe it is the cat and mouse relationship that was formed between two people from two very different countries operating in two separate steel tubes submerged somewhere under the ocean surface – and that connection they made.

MY FAMILY… Is amazing! I am blessed to have my wife as my business partner along with one of my sisters.

Our “kids” have both worked in the business with us and are now pursuing their own paths. Our son Zach is finishing up his undergrad at ASU, hoping to land a job with the National Park Service – matching his love for the outdoors. Our daughter Hannah actually is working with us since she has graduated from ASU this past year and is getting ready to enter Physician Assistant school next Fall.

THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… It is far easier to buy than to sell! As with any business, the goal is always to buy low and sell high. Entering into the transaction is easy whether you are buying inventory for the store, a stock investment or a house. Today you can simply press a button and poof - you own it! However, now the job becomes convincing others that they need what

I have and are willing to pay for it. If I buy wrong and there is no demand, it could be a very costly mistake.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… My garage! I hang out and tinker in there a lot. I decompress and do some of my best thinking and creative work there. It is great therapy.

MY FIRST JOB WAS… Washing planes (and bathrooms) at Scottsdale Municipal Airport, followed soon after by that job at the Shell Gas Station where we actually pumped the gas for you.

I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… My fall garden, planning a bedroom remodel into an office, definitely working on a car at some level, trying

to build a better structure for our organization that will support growth for more stores, and at the 32nd Street store, we are building out the garden center at the back of the store by installing shade structures and bringing in vertical and container gardens!

GHOSTLY PLACES IN ARIZONA A HISTORY OF HAUNTING

s the temperatures begin to drop in Arizona, the thrills and chills of Halloween spookiness begin to creep in. One of the most fascinating, and entertaining, aspects of Arizona is the legendary prevalence of its ghost stories. As the heart of the Wild West, Arizona has had a history of violence, tragedy and mayhem from its earliest days on record. The result was hundreds of ghostly stories that surround certain, creepy spots throughout our state. Some of the ghostly spots are difficult to find and can be hard to reach, but here are a few of the reportedly haunted places around Arizona you can easily visit and take a ghost tour this Halloween season.

IRDCAGE THEATER 535 East Allen Street Tombstone, Arizona Tombstone, located in the southern part of Arizona, is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone has seen its share of violence and death.

The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. Arguably one of the most haunted places in the state, the current owners of the Birdcage Theater describe it this way: “Over one hundred and forty bullet holes remain in the building. Visitors and employees of the Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone, Arizona, have reported seeing the spirits of former prostitutes and men in cowboy hats. Some claim to be touched and pushed by unseen forces. At night, the sounds of laughter, yelling and music have been heard, as though the parties of the old west were still raging.”

Once a billion dollar copper mining town, Jerome was also once known as the “Wickedest Town in the West.”

The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and many of the original structures built in its heyday are still precariously hanging from the side of the mountain, looming over the Verde Valley of NorthCentral Arizona. The Grand Hotel is reportedly one of the most haunted establishments in Jerome, a town full of great ghost stories. A former hospital, it is said to have about eight different ghosts haunting the building, ranging from patients to staff who died in a variety of frightening ways. Although the current owner is not really into hauntings or ghost stories, he does say:

Visitors report hearing voices, seeing “spirit orbs” and feeling cold spots around the former mining town, reportedly another Arizona hot spot for ghostly activity.

“If there are spirits, they must be a lot happier occupying a hotel instead of a hospital. They are dealing with a clientele that are here by choice and not necessity.”

If you’re looking for one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, take a day or weekend trip south to Tombstone and stop in at the Bird Cage Theater.

A small mining town cropped up to support the mine and the usual antics of the Wild West ensued. Once home to a population of several thousand people, Vulture City provides people with a glimpse of the mining culture and lifestyle in the Old West, and visitors can explore several of the buildings to see a piece of Arizona history. Visitors can also see the infamous, and very creepy, “Hanging Tree,” where legend has it that 18 miners were executed for stealing gold in the late 1800s.

Jerome is well known for its hauntings, and haunted tours of the town are available for visitors who want to see more of the spooky sights and rumored haunts of the spirits in Jerome and the surrounding area.

The town of Wickenburg hosts its own Legends and Ghosts Tours, so if you are seeking a spooky trip to an old mining town, take a quick journey down the road to Wickenburg for a tour of the Vulture Mine and find out about the other haunted spots in the area.

ASSAYAMPA INN 122 E Gurley St. Prescott, Arizona The one time capitol of Arizona, Prescott is home to many stories of ghosts and Wild West antics. One of the most famous, however, is the supposed haunting of the somewhat more modern Hassayampa Inn in on Gurley Street. The hotel was constructed in the 1920s and quickly became the site of one of Prescott’s most notorious hauntings. The hotel

describes its most famous ghost story this way: “The year it opened, 1927, a very young bride checked into a balcony suite with her much older husband. According to the story, her husband went out to buy cigarettes and never returned. She waited for three days and then took her life in despair. Since then, countless hotel guests and employees have reported encounters with a young woman throughout the hotel crying at the end of a bed, dressed in a pink gown in the hallway, appearing and disappearing from rooms. Others have reported strange cold spots in her honeymoon suite. Frequently the smell of flowers emanates from the empty room.”

The Hassayampa Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel in downtown Prescott, but it’s also the location of quite a few different reported ghost sightings. If you are in the mood for a good ghost story and some famous hauntings this Halloween season, the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott is worth a weekend visit.

These are just a few of the many spots in Arizona rumored to be home to ghosts of our Wild West past. TALKING WITH AGING DRIVERS: DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE

H

aving a conversation about safe driving concerns with a senior citizen can be challenging, but it’s an important talk to have. Unfortunately, not enough older Americans are having these discussions.

Nearly 83 percent of older drivers report never speaking about their safe driving ability to a family member or doctor, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Of the small percentage of families who do have a conversation, 15 percent do so after a crash or traffic infraction has occurred - which could be too late.

Due to their fragility, older drivers are at greater risk of death and injury if involved in a crash. In 2016, more than 3,500 drivers age 65 and older died in traffic crashes and more than 200,000 were injured.

With seniors currently outliving their ability to drive safely by an average of

seven to 10 years, AAA urges families to avoid waiting to talk with older drivers about safety and help seniors plan for “driving retirement” just as they plan for financial retirement.

• Start talking early and often. Be positive and supportive in your conversations, as well as focus on ways to help keep older drivers in your family safe behind the wheel.

“The right time to stop driving varies for everyone,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety. “This research shows that older drivers can be hesitant to initiate conversations about their driving capabilities, so it is important that families encourage them to talk early and often about their future behind the wheel. With early discussion and proper planning, elderly drivers may extend their time on the road.”

• Avoid generalizations. Do not jump to conclusions about an older driver’s skills or abilities.

AAA recommends that families start talking with older adults about safe driving early and avoid waiting until there are “red flags” such as crashes, scrapes on the car, new medical diagnoses or worsening health conditions.

t less than 2000 square feet, 32 Shea is smaller than many area homes. Yet since opening in 2011, the restaurant has brought a constant buzz of activity to the 32nd St and Shea intersection that it’s named for. What is it that makes this small but mighty oasis in the middle of the Paradise Hills Shopping Center a beloved gem to so many people?

“32 Shea is a hub for the community because we belong to the community,” said General Manager, Karyn Ellsworth. When the restaurant took over the space that was home to a photo mat in the 1980’s, there wasn’t much else around. 32 Shea was part of the effort to reverse that and restore the North 32nd neighborhood to the vibrant area it once was by giving residents a place to call their own.

Besides creating a feeling of localism and community, what truly sets 32 Shea apart is its “flex concept” as both a daytime counter-service café and nighttime full-service restaurant that allows locals to visit multiple times in a day.

32 Shea opens at 6 a.m. as a hip, indie coffee shop serving up handcrafted espresso drinks, breakfast, and lunch. The hustle is real as orders are taken at the counter and guests grab their Rosemary-Honey Lattes or New Mexico Breakfast Burritos from the reclaimed wood bar. A drive-thru window serves quality food and beverages to those pressed for time. Others live across the Valley, and travel miles to see us every chance they get.”

SHOULD I CASH OUT MY HOME EQUITY?

O

ver the past several years, the North 32nd area has seen a major increase in home values. Per Zillow, we’ve seen increases of more than 7 percent just the past 12 months. That means residents that have owned their homes for a few years are potentially sitting on a pretty good amount of equity.

I recently received a call from a client that had fallen into a bind. At no fault of their own, they had been temporarily forced to rely heavily on their credit cards. While the situation that led them to do that was rectified, they were finding themselves barely staying afloat with their monthly

bills. This became a bigger issue with the recent storms causing major damage to their roof. We were able to look at their mortgage situation and decided to do a cash-out refinance, paying off all of their other bills and the roof. In this situation we were able to save them over $400 per month and save them from going further into debt to pay for their roof.

The situation discussed above is one of the few instances that I personally would recommend doing a cash-out refinance on your home. It is my humble opinion that your home’s equity should be the last thing you access when funding is needed. One of the issues prior to the housing crisis in 2007 was that people were accessing their over-inflated home values for impulsive purchases. Here

are some reasons that accessing your home’s equity could make sense: 1. DEBT CONSOLIDATION: It doesn’t always make a lot of sense to wrap other debts into your home.

However, in instances such as the story above, it was the most sensible option but ONLY if they don’t go back to over-utilizing their credit cards again. Otherwise, the fact that they have exhausted their home’s equity could come back to haunt them.

2. HOME IMPROVEMENT: Utilizing some of your home’s equity to pay for repairs or improvements can be a good idea as doing so may increase the home’s value. It is important to understand what types of improvements add value to the home.

For example, adding an in-ground swimming pool rarely adds dollar for dollar value so it is probably not

id you know that the choices your local grocery store makes can have a global impact on the environment? From the types and brands of seafood sold to the way foods are packaged and carried out of the store, oceans worldwide are affected by the operations of grocers near you.

Fortunately, supermarkets across the country have made significant progress over the last 10 years when it comes to providing sustainable seafood options to customers, according to a new Greenpeace report, “Carting Away the Oceans.” From advocacy and transparency initiatives to addressing illegal fishing, many major retailers nationwide are improving. Overall, 90 percent of the retailers profiled in the report received passing scores, 10 years after every single retailer failed Greenpeace’s first assessment. However, experts say that the momentum of this positive trend should be applied to other areas of sustainability, too.

“It’s time to put the same energy into tackling the unaddressed issues facing seafood workers and our oceans,” says Greenpeace oceans campaigner David Pinsky. “It’s not truly sustainable seafood if it’s produced by forced labor and then wrapped in throwaway plastic packaging. Supermarkets can use their brands, buying power and influence to do what is right for our oceans and for future generations.”

As Greenpeace points out, the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic enters oceans every minute, and with plastic production set to double in the next 20 years - largely for packaging - threats to ocean biodiversity and seafood supply chains are increasing.

According to the report, none of the retailers profiled currently have a comprehensive policy to reduce and ultimately phase out their reliance on single-use plastics.

As a customer, you can make a difference by carrying your own tote bag on shopping trips and by asking your local supermarket what steps are being taken to reduce plastic use. Consumers can also show their support for brands doing the right thing by shopping only for seafood that’s produced sustainably and ethically. NORTH VALLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES THEIR

FIRST CONCERT OF THE 2018-19 CONCERT SEASON

orth Valley Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the opening of their seventh concert season with “Fall Fright Night”, Oct. 20th, 2018. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. at North Canyon H.S. Performing Arts Auditorium, 1700 E. Union Hills Drive.

The program includes several selections heard in scary movies or t.v. programs. Included is music from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Psycho, creating the suspenseful and sometimes terrifying atmosphere of the film. You’ll hear theme music from A Nightmare on Elm Street, a 1984 American slasher film, and The Funeral March of a Marionette, a piece written by Charles Gounod in 1872, that you’ll recognize as theme music for the t.v. series Alfred

Hitchcock Presents. Two pieces from Walt Disney’s animated film, Fantasia, will be part of the program -- the theme around apprentice Mickey Mouse in Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and RimskyKorsakov’s arrangement of Night on Bald Mountain.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS SEARCHING

Told mainly through a computer and websites, a father tries to find his daughter after she goes missing.

The format Searching uses to tell its story made it much more suspenseful and interesting than most other regular narrative features in its genre. The use of real websites both popular and obscure adds to the descent that David (John Cho) has to go through. Speaking of which, given that most of the time is spent solely with him, Cho does a fantastic job…so much so that he actually overshadows the other actors, though they all do their best. Beyond the main plot, the way the internet is portrayed is scarily accurate. From the different types of content that’s promoted on websites, to the people pretending to feel bad about a situation just for attention, it all feels genuine.

THE NUN

After the suicide of a nun, a priest and a novitiate investigate the area where it occurred, discovering the horrors that lie within it.

The Nun should be a film that I dislike, with the amount of jump scares, strange editing choices (especially during some vision scenes), and an all-around cliche feel (you’ll likely feel like you’ve seen this film several times before).

But director Corin Hardy managed to grab me, perhaps due to my love of gothic looking films.

Everything from the cinematography to the set design has a very creepy feel to it, with set pieces in graveyards, underground dungeons and a church’s nave. The film is also bolstered by the leads Demian Bichir (the genuinely sympathetic but stoic Father Burke) and Taissa Farmiga (Sister Irene, a curious but confident practicing nun who has some great moments in the third act). And despite the constant jump 24 • October 2018 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

scares, they were at least real and a few genuinely got me. The Nun was one of the weaker Conjuring films, but still well done.

THE PREDATOR

A soldier must work with a scientist to protect his son from both the government and Predators.

The Predator doesn’t feel finished, and I don’t mean in a “cliffhanger ending” way. I mean there are moments where it feels like scenes are missing, such as never seeing what happens to certain characters (one of the main characters literally disappears towards the end). Speaking of the characters, there are none in this film, just caricatures, designed to fit a stereotype without having any development. And for a film that’s supposed to be intense and scary, the amount of comedy ruins any of that, and even then, most of the humor doesn’t even work. It really is interesting how a film with so much talent in front and behind the camera can result in such a bad film.

A lumberjack goes after a cult leader after the death of his wife.

What other film can you think of has Nicolas Cage fighting a demon biker gang? When’s the last time you saw Nicolas Cage give a genuinely great performance that makes you sympathize with his character while also being insane? What about a haunting score from the late Johann Johannsson that combines orchestra, synth AND rock? There are also amazing supporting roles from Andrea Riseborough and Linus Roache, the latter who hams it to oblivion. And don’t even get me started on the beautiful neon drenched visuals. Mandy is as much of an experience as it is a movie, and it’s one that you must see.
