APS Deadline September 30th Homeowners Must Act Now
H
omeowners must sign up for solar and have an APS Solar Reservation approved by APS by end of day September 30 in order to receive and be grandfathered in to the current cash price for solar system production exported to the grid. Homeowners who go solar after the September 30th deadline will receive a substantially lower cash credit.
A typical rooftop solar system produces a large surplus of power in the Arizona spring months when we have abundant sunshine but little or no need for air conditioning. This power is sold to APS at the price set by the ACC and the cash credit is added to the customer’s account. For systems that are designed to produce the same power per year as the homeowner consumes per year (1:1 ratio), the homeowner will sell 50% to 60% of their solar production back to APS, which creates a cash credit that will be used to pay APS for the additional kWh’s needed in the summer months when the system is producing a deficit amount of the power needed. This ends up being thousands of kWhs sold every year and so the price per unit is very important. The less homeowners get paid from APS, the less cash credit their spring production will generate and the more the homeowner will have to come out of pocket to cover the summer bills. With the exception of 2020 when the ACC voted to postpone the price drop to October 2021 due to the pandemic, the price APS pays the customer for their credits has been dropping yearly since 2017 when the ACC approved ending Net Metering and replacing it with a form of Net Billing, known as RCP. Prior to 2017, customers who installed solar were grandfathered into Net Metering, which provided homeowners a 1:1 kWh credit, which meant they are getting full price for their production as compared to what they were being charged. A system designed to

produce 100% of the customer’s usage would leave them with a $20 remaining bill for APS fees and other taxes. Since September 2017, homeowners have been getting grandfathered into the RCP program and their credit is based on the price that APS is required to pay in the year that they sign up. In 2017/18 that price was 12.9 cents. In 2018/19 it was lowered to 11.6 cents and then dropped again in 2019/20 to 10.45 cents where it is today and will be until September 30. At the current buyback rate a homeowner that has a 1:1 or 100% usage to production design will experience a $40 to $80 average remaining APS bill depending on system size. This has increased from the $20 per month under Net Metering and will increase again for customers that go solar after September 30. The good news about RCP is that, unlike Net Metering, homeowners can reduce their annual APS net bill to $0 per year by increasing the number of panels to produce enough additional cash to cover the APS differential in prices, fees and other taxes. Once the buyback rate drops in October it will take more panels to get the net to zero. There is very little, but enough time left, to get a solar system custom designed for your home and have the APS reservation submitted and approved before the deadline. Food for Good: An Update on the Joy Bus Diner By Lisa Coughlin, Director of The Joy Bus Diner THE JOY BUS DINER IS A NONPROFIT RESTAURANT LOCATED IN NORTH 32ND THAT’S HELPING MAKE OUR VALLEY A TASTIER, HAPPIER PLACE, ONE MEAL AT A TIME. Every cent earned at the restaurant is used to support The Joy Bus, a local charity that brings chef-inspired meals and caring conversations to cancer patients Valleywide. Unfortunately, the diner’s doors have been closed due to these trying times, but we are still standing tall and
continuing our meal program through The Joy Bus. Throughout the pandemic we have seen amazing growth in our meal program and have even expanded to a new delivery day to accommodate the demand for our services. We have an amazing community of volunteers that have rallied with us over this past year and a half and have stepped up to the plate and made our dreams come true.
We are excited to welcome our community back to our restaurant. The diner is The Joy Bus’ main source of revenue, but we have been fortunate enough to continue to provide our services and keep our feet on the ground thanks to our amazing community partners and donors.
We know that times are uncertain, but we remain hopeful that we may be able to open our doors again soon. Currently, we are aiming for a re-open date toward

Phoenix’s Response to Drought and How It Impacts the City Information Courtesy of Phoenix Water RECENTLY, THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF RECLAMATION DECLARED THE FIRST-EVER TIER 1 SHORTAGE ON THE COLORADO RIVER, BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2022. This shortage is an outcome of persistent declines in Colorado River flows as a result of longterm drought conditions, over allocation of available river resources, and climate change. Phoenix is built for drought. The city has developed a robust water resource portfolio over many decades and will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River in the years to come. Community Local Nonprofit Seeking Nominations for Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women Applications for the unique honor are due by September 30
W
omen from across Arizona who are currently making an impact in their communities in a meaningful way are being sought as nominees for Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women.
Now 11 years old, 48 Arizona Women, the sponsoring Valley-based organization, started as an official Arizona Centennial Project in 2010 to recognize the state’s most remarkable women having a positive impact in their communities, often with little fanfare. The organization’s mission is to, “Transform lives, build stronger communities and help positively shape Arizona and the nation.” Partnering with the Arizona Historical Society, 48 Arizona Women honors professional and non-professional women from diverse backgrounds whose leadership and commitment are contributing in a positive way to the future of Arizona. “The first group of 48 honorees were selected in 2012 and included U.S. Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O’Connor, Cindy McCain, and Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee,” says Connie Robinson, chair of the 48 Arizona Women Steering Committee. “But they also included a former governor, educators, a bull fighter who became a CEO, an advocate for the treatment and cure of Niemann Pick Type C disease, a former mezzo-soprano with the Metropolitan Opera, a pastor who ministers to incarcerated women, a mayor who transformed a city, an ambassador who became Secretary of the Air Force and many dedicated philanthropists, volunteers, doctors, artists and entertainers in leadership positions throughout the state.”
Open nominations are currently being accepted through September 30 and local residents are encouraged to nominate anyone they feel is worthy—from a next door neighbor to an elected official. Nominations can be completed online at 48women.org. Paper nomination forms are available by calling 602-896-9000 or can be downloaded from the website. “This program was created to raise awareness for the amazing work women are doing to improve and enhance the lives of Arizonans,” Robinson says. “While some nominees will be well-known, others will be working diligently but less publicly in their cities and towns.” A committee comprised of a diverse group of community leaders, public and private sector leaders, and residents will evaluate nominees on several key factors: the impact that their leadership, accomplishments and dedication have had on the state and the nation; their influence as role models and visionaries; and their ability to relate to a wide range of people. Honorees will be announced in early 2022 and featured in a 140-plus page coffee table book titled Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women—A New Decade, telling each woman’s story in words and photos. All honorees will be formally recognized in spring 2022 during a 48 Women Luncheon as well as a VIP reception for the launch of the book. The book will be available for purchase throughout Arizona in mid-2022.
“Our goal for the book is to incorporate it into the Arizona school curriculum as well as make it available in libraries around the state,” Robinson says. “Children need everyday role models who are bringing meaningful change to their lives and the communities in which they live. ne of the most fulfilling things we can do in life is serve others. Ideally, the happiness we derive is all the thanks we need. But an amazing program called Legacy Corps is making it even more rewarding to help others.
Based at Arizona State University, this national AmeriCorps program matches people in communities across the country with veterans and military families who need support. Hospice of the Valley is thrilled to be the first Arizona partner and receive a grant to fund the program for the next three years.
Volunteers who join the program are called Legacy Corps members and receive special training in caregiver support. Their participation is invaluable to military families who need socialization, companionship and in-home respite care to ensure their loved ones are not alone while a caregiver takes a much-needed break.
Of the 20,000 patients we serve annually, about 1,400 are veterans, who often find themselves physically and emotionally overwhelmed. Many need assistance with transportation, grocery shopping or light housekeeping. Now we can help lighten the stress.
In addition to training, Legacy Corps offers incentives like a monthly allowance and a college tuition award after a year of service. Those who are 55 or older can pass this award to a child or grandchild.
“Hospice of the Valley is excited to implement this grant from Legacy Corps and touch more families in our veteran community,” says Volunteer Services Director Stacia Ortega. 10 • September 2021 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
Legacy Corps’ national project director, Jack Steele, says the grant enables Hospice of the Valley to recruit and train 24 volunteers this year. Among the current applicants are a 19-year-old woman who has volunteered
with various nonprofits since age 15 and a 43-year-old speech therapist who wants to help veterans living with dementia. “They both express a vital quality: a passion for national service and excitement about making a difference in their communities,” says Eileen Dullum, Legacy Corps program coordinator for Hospice of the Valley. Community Local Dentists for Special Needs Earns Major Grant for Patient Care By Alison Bailin Batz
O
pened in 2019, the Pacific Dental Services (PDS) Foundation Dentists for Special Needs is a family-friendly, sensory-integrated nonprofit dental office located at 4550 E Bell Road in North 32nd. The nonprofit center supports patients with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities, including autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, paraplegia, cerebral palsy, and many others. The clinic features specially designed, wheelchair accessible, sensory integrated spaces for dental care with televisions on the ceiling and doors for privacy. It even has a unique room with two chairs to provide space for siblings to allow for modeling behavior. “Since opening, the PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs has grown to serve on average 200 patients per month, providing services that include routine dental checkups, fillings, silver diamine fluoride, crowns, and emergency dental care,” says Kyle Guerin, executive director of the PDS Foundation. Given the immense need in the community for a dental service like this, Delta Dental of Arizona, through its Foundation, recently announced a $100,000 grant to support the organization. Through the grant, a twoyear investment of $50,000 per year, the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation will support patient care, including financial assistance for those who are uninsured.
“The PDS Foundation Dentists for Special Needs provides the appropriate accommodations for patients with physical disabilities, as well as sensitivity to sensory stimuli like speech, sound, and light. David Jourabchi, DDS, specializes in treating patients using sensory and behavioral coping strategies, which is a positive step toward ensuring access to dental care for everyone across Arizona,” says Allan Allford, Delta Dental of Arizona president and chief executive officer. “Delta Dental’s mission is to improve lives by promoting optimal oral health; making investments in organizations like this brings us one step closer to seeing this mission realized.” “This grant will ensure that we can continue to offer services to all individuals in a way that is comfortable and safe for them,” says Guerin. This is one of many investments Delta Dental of Arizona has made to support oral health across Arizona and is in addition to its 2021 Foundation grants, which awarded nearly $775,000 to 30 local organizations to support oral health services and education. In addition, according to the recently released Delta Dental Institute’s 2020 Community Impact Report highlighting the investments the Delta Dental companies and their Foundations made in 2020 to advance oral health, respond to COVID-19, and address health inequities and disparities, Delta Dental of Arizona impacted the lives of 346,818 individuals in Arizona by investing $1,787,734 in 54 community impact programs.

Tips for Caregivers During Baby Safety Month By Emily Singleton
S
eptember is Baby Safety Month. For new parents, participating in a home visitation program like Healthy Families is a great way to make sure you are up to date on resources and information to keep your baby safe. Here are some tips from the Healthy Families program for caregivers with a baby in their home. SLEEP • For safe sleep, remember “ABC.” Babies should sleep alone, on their back and in a crib or other approved surface that meets the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission for all sleep time, including naps. • Baby bumpers, fluffy bedding and stuffed animals are cute, but leave them out of baby’s bed. Use only a firm mattress and a tight-fitted sheet in the baby’s sleeping area. PETS • Who doesn’t love a good video of babies and doggies playing with each other? While making those sweet videos, keep your baby protected from pets who may be jealous of or curious about the new baby in the house.
• Do not let babies play near pet food and water. Dog food can be a choking hazard for babies (yes, they will put it in their mouths) and empty bowls can carry bacteria like salmonella. CAR SAFETY • Did you know all infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing seat until they are at least two years old or until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer? Their legs might kick the seat in the back, but rear-facing is considered the safest position in case of an accident. • Never leave a baby or young child unattended in the car – not even for a moment. Get kids out of the car first and then unload items in your car. Bring kids in with you even if you are just running into the store for a moment. OUT AND ABOUT • Babies can move fast! Make sure to strap them in to the stroller or high chair to prevent falls. Even if you think they won’t try to wiggle out, they might surprise you! • Always place the baby’s car seat in the basket of the shopping cart. Although it is a common practice, it is not safe to put baby’s car seat balanced on the top seat of the shopping cart.

Kids’ Corner CREATIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE GRANDPARENTS AND IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE By Jenna-Lee Neff id you know that grandparents have their very own day? Typically the first Sunday after Labor Day, National Grandparents Day honors the special bond created between grandparents and their grandchildren, and encourages families to celebrate the love between the generations. This year, the special day is Sunday, September 12. Grandparents Day began when Marian McQuade envisioned a holiday that would encourage children to visit their grandparents and other aging adults. Around the age of 40, McQuade began organizing an annual “Past 80” party in Richwood, West Virginia, and she spent much of her free time visiting residents of nursing homes, organizing exercise groups and craft classes for the elderly, and helping residents record their precious family recipes so they wouldn’t be lost to time. McQuade took her vision of the grandparent holiday and introduced it to politicians near and far. Eventually it was made official national holiday in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. Whether your grandparents are near or far, we’ve put together tips on how you can make priceless memories this Grandparents Day. Here are five ways to spend the day with the grandparents in your life: • Have a sleepover: Many grandparents want to spend more time with their grandkids, so pack up the family and stay the night if grandma and grandpa are up for it.
• Ask them to show you their hobby: Chances are your grandparent has an interest vastly different from your own; show them you want to know more by asking them to share their hobby and help you learn. • Create crafty memories: Work on a project together. You could work on a special painting, make a wellloved recipe, or tie-dye T-shirts together. • Go on an adventure: Ask your grandparent to share some of their favorite places with you and make arrangements for a day and a time to go see them. • Take some of the household work off their plate: Whether it’s cleaning up an overgrown garden, taking out the trash, or taking care of their next grocery trip for them, you can show your love by taking something off their to-do list. Maybe the grandparents in your life live out of town or out of state. Or maybe they continue to social distance in the wake of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Whatever the case may be, here are five ways to celebrate the day without being face-to-face: • Pick up the phone or the iPad: Surprise grandparents with a much-needed phone call or a virtual visit on FaceTime or Zoom. • Write a letter: Let grandma and grandpa know you are thinking about them with a hand-written note. • Ask them to share a story: Next time you connect, ask grandparents to share stories from their childhood. • Send them something sweet: Whether it’s flowers for grandma or grandpa’s favorite candies, a small gift let’s them know you’re thinking of them.

• Make a photo book: Don’t let distance cut them out. Making a photo book is a great way to share memories in a format they can enjoy over and over again.

n the recent past, all homes were in demand. Even the less desirable homes that backed or faced a busy street were selling for almost the same price as nicer interior lots. The shortage of homes and the intense demand caused increased home desirability for all conditions and locations. As the seller’s market is cooling off, the location, condition and amenities of a home are going to become important factors again. The homes with better locations and features will sell for higher prices and shorter days on market. In late March, the Valley began seeing a shift. It was tiny and barely noticeable. The supply was increasing. As supply increases, buyers have more options. When buyers have more options, the condition and upgrades of the homes they have to choose from will play a big role in homes’ value and days on the market.

Back to School: Healthy Kids, Healthy Families By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
I
t is that time of year again—the kids are back in school! This means more circulating illnesses and germs. During this time, we can be more susceptible to illnesses and it can be helpful to prepare the immune system for the school season. The germs, viruses and illnesses our children are exposed can make the entire family susceptible, but there are some simple, natural ways to strengthen and support immunity for the entire family.
DIET: Foods high in sugar and processed foods can decrease the immune response to illness. This weakening of the immune system can make us more vulnerable to illnesses. Instead, focus on nutrient dense foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats and protein, which support a healthy immune system. In addition to food, it is extremely important to stay well hydrated. These tips are also useful during an illness to help strengthen the immune response. SLEEP: Eliminate electronics at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Electronics overstimulate the brain, which can lead to difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. Implement a healthy sleep routine that will last throughout the entire school year. The better quality sleep we have, the stronger our immune system will be. GASTROINTESTINAL SUPPORT: Our digestive system is directly correlated with our immune system. Constipation, diar-
rhea, gas and bloating are all factors that can decrease overall immunity. If any of these conditions are present, it is important to find the root cause and resolve any underlying factors. It can be beneficial for children to take a probiotic to support the immune system and balance the gut flora. Food sensitivities and/or food allergies can also hinder the immune system and should be avoided. NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES: Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 are the most common deficiencies that can hinder the immune system. It is important to have levels checked to ensure proper supplementation. A high quality multivitamin, zinc and vitamin C can also be a great addition to a daily supplement regimen if needed. HERBAL REMEDIES: There are many herbs that can support the immune system and it is always best to consult with your naturopathic physician for guidance and proper dosing. My favorite herb for the
entire family is sambucus/elderberry. It is well tolerated, tastes delicious and is an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants to support the immune system. It can be taken to strengthen the immune system as well as used during acute illness to help shorten the duration. You can find over the counter syrups or make your own, which is a fun activity for the entire family. See your naturopathic physician for more individualized support. Every Homeowner Needs an Estate Plan By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

ith the real estate market a hot topic, I thought I would talk about the importance of having an estate plan if you own a home. If you bought a second home during the pandemic, you probably need a revocable trust – especially if that vacation home is in another state. Why do you need a plan? First, we must be sure that someone can step in if you are incapacitated. What will happen to your home if you are unable to handle your finances? Who will pay your mortgage, keep the electricity on, and keep things running? Who will sign to sell the home if you need the money from a sale? With a proper estate plan, you appoint the person who will have the power to take care of your home, sell it if needed, and take care of you. Without that, the court appoints someone in a costly proceeding called conservatorship.
Second, what will happen to your home when you die? Without a proper estate plan, it might not go to who you want to have it. If you want your spouse to have your home, let’s plan for that. But what
about after your spouse dies? Without an estate plan, if the home and other assets are in both you and your spouse’s names, then all of it passes to the surviving spouse. If you pass away first, your spouse gets to decide who will receive the property when he or she dies. If he or she dies without an estate plan, the law says that the house or the proceeds goes to his or her heirs, whoever that may be – but if you have no common children, your heirs get nothing. For a single person with more than one child, it is important to have a plan that appoints one person to handle the estate. Without that, all three children have an equal right to serve as personal representative of your estate. If they all agree on who should serve, no problem. But if there is any disagreement, it could cause delays in getting control over your affairs, meaning your mortgage may go unpaid, and the utilities could be shut off before anyone has standing to take over and maintain the home.

MOVIE REVIEWS The Suicide Squad
with their actors bringing to the screen the humanity and the pain of their pasts. Most of all, it’s a movie that’s confident in what it is and, in today’s big budget market, that’s a rarity. The Green Knight
Old A group of tourists find themselves trapped on a beach that causes them to age rapidly. M. Night Shyamalan is one of our best thriller directors today and Old is a reminder of that. It’s an unusual movie, with performances that could be called stale and distracted. However, given the disorienting and frantic nature of the story, it’s appropriate. The fear of the situation is one where no one can act normal, whether by their own emotions or their own degradation. Shyamalan shows that through his script and Mike Gioulakis’ unique camerawork. The actors do an incredible job keeping their personalities consistent as they grow older, while still changing. You even buy into their sudden change in intelligence and speech. It’s not scary, but more a creepy film that effectively preys on your fears of aging. Don’t Breathe 2
figures show up to take the girl, his true nature is revealed. Don’t Breathe 2 has an interesting idea, particularly when questioning the morals of each character you meet. The problem, as with many bad movies with cool ideas, is the execution. It is unable to commit to any of their characters being grey, whether in some forced “twist” or in a pathetic attempt to make you feel bad for them. This leads to one-dimensional characters and underwhelming performances. Even the usually great Stephen Lang seems bored. The movie seems more obsessed with being hardcore and gross rather than telling a good story. To be fair it is, but part of what made the first film a nice surprise was that it limited its gore. Rodo Sayagues is decent in his directorial debut, but not much of his work stands out from Fede Alvarez’s previous film. It’s a real disappointment.
SEPTEMBER RELEASES Task Force X is sent on another mission, with members old and new. This time they are headed into the jungles of an island containing secrets that will change the life course for several of our beloved/hated characters. The Suicide Squad is the kind of comic book movie that is rarely seen. It wears its inspiration on its sleeve (classic war movie like The Dirty Dozen) while still carving its identity, thanks to its creator James Gunn’s mixture of humor and heart. The action is large and violent. Its mixture of practical and digital effects blending together so well while embracing the cartoonish nature of comics. The mixture of new and old characters brings to life what the film is really all about: lost souls finding their purpose. Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 are clearly the standouts 24 • September 2021 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
King Arthur’s nephew goes on a quest to fulfil a task from a mysterious plantlike figure. A film that requires a lot of patience, The Green Knight rewards those who commit to what it has going for it. Dev Patel’s performance walks the line between bravery and arrogance. He gives his character several layers of personality. The slow nature of the movie matches the tone, as each chapter is, in a way, its own little movie with a different tone and feeling. Sometimes it’s horror, sometimes dramatic, but it works. Each supporting character plays an equally important role in the overall story. Visually, it’s one of the most gorgeous movies you’ll see this year. The story seems to jump off the screen and come to life. A true work of art.
