PRESS COFFEE OPENS FLAGSHIP ROASTERY PRESS COFFEE COMPANY OPENED ITS NEWEST LOCATION THE ROASTERY BY PRESS COFFEE, THE NEW FLAGSHIP ROASTING FACILITY AND CAFÉ IN THE MIDDLE OF JULY AT 10443 N. 32ND ST. IN PHOENIX. The new, 5,600 square-foot, two-level roastery

incorporates eco-friendly elements, including energy efficient solar panels on the roof and natural gas. The spacious layout and modern design allows guests to see the roasting process in action while enjoying food and drinks in the comfortable lounge area. Adding a third German made, Probat roaster gave the company the ability to expand for years to come and continue the production of its cold brew coffee at the original roastery, which was recently launched in to-go cans. The second level space accommodates more than 30 people for private events and coffee classes taught by Press experts.

The café serves an expanded food and drink menu.

In addition to the coffee and espresso based drinks found on Press’ current menu, guests will be able to enjoy beer, wine and a selection of liquor. The “adult” cold brew shaker featuring peanut butter whiskey is one notable addition.

“We are thrilled to welcome the community into

our new flagship location. The Roastery allows us to share with the public our love for coffee and how we make it. We hope this iconic building and our passion for the seed to cup process will be something Arizona can be proud of for years to come,” said co-owner Steve Kraus.

PHOENIX APPROVES NEW PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE PROJECTS PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED THE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE PLANS FOR FISCAL YEARS 2021 THROUGH 2023. The plans include Transportation 2050 and Arizona highway user revenue funded pavement maintenance projects to improve street conditions throughout the city.

The city’s pavement maintenance budget includes $90 million per year through fiscal year 2023, by which time nearly 1,650 street miles will be treated. The City Council’s action to advance funding to accelerate paving projects allows the city to significantly

repair more of its most deteriorated streets and extend the lifespan of its aging street network.

“As long as we have cars and roads, we will have potholes. However, with the approval of new pavement maintenance projects throughout the city, road improvements will happen much faster,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “As the fastest growing city, Phoenix needs safe roads and a strong public transportation system to keep ahead of population growth and today’s vote ensures that we are planning not just for current residents but for future Phoenicians as well.”

The planned projects were identified and prioritized based on street condition assessment data, field evaluations and public input. “The city held more than 75 public meetings across the city to gain extensive community input that helped the city prioritize which streets should be included in the pavement maintenance program,” said Councilwoman Debra Stark, who chairs the Aviation and Transportation Subcommittee. “I am proud that this plan reflects the community’s input, as well as street condition assessments and field evaluations.”

ARIZONA STRENGTHENS PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE GOVERNOR DOUG DUCEY RECENTLY JOINED SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, VICTIM ADVOCATES AND ARIZONA STATE SENATORS PAUL BOYER AND HEATHER CARTER FOR A CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF H.B. 2466. The bill, which passed unanimously in the Arizona State Legislature, strengthens protections for victims of child sexual abuse by extending the amount of time victims have to pursue civil action against perpetrators.

“We cannot overstate the pain and trauma suffered by victims of child sexual abuse,” said Governor Ducey. “We know victims need time to process and understand what happened. They deserve the time to come forward. With this bill, Arizona is taking a stand to hold abusers accountable and provide justice to victims of child sexual abuse. This reform did not come easily, but progress on the really important issues rarely ever does. I want to thank Senator Boyer for his dedication to the children of Arizona.”

H.B. 2466 extends the amount of time victims have

to take civil action against perpetrators of child abuse from two years to 12 years, allowing victims to pursue justice up to the age of 30. The bill also allows victims who did not have the opportunity to take civil action for their abuse due to the previous two-year limit to bring a claim against their perpetrator until December 31, 2020. In addition, the bill allows civil action to be taken against an organization that knew or had notice of the sexual conduct. The bill’s provisions allow victims of child sexual abuse to seek justice and receive relief from a perpetrator.

Before signing the bill, Governor Ducey announced the establishment of the Justice for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse Task Force. The task force will be dedicated to providing recommendations to the state for further reforms to ensure victims are entitled to safety, healing, justice and restitution. Members of the task force will consist of representatives from the law enforcement community, the Arizona House of Representatives, the Arizona Senate and advocates of victims of child sexual abuse.

In Fiscal Year 2019, which concluded June 30, a total of just over $11.2 million were raised for endeavors ranging from support of Arizona veterans’ programs, Special Olympics, organ donation, hunger relief, university scholarships and many other causes.

was just over $8.7 million, increasing to nearly $9.4 million in FY 2016. FY 2017 saw more than $9.8 million raised followed by $10.6 million in FY 2018.

Specialty plates are created by an act of the Arizona legislature and the program, which began in 1989, is administered by the MVD.

JUNE 2019 EMPLOYMENT FOR PHOENIX METRO UP 68,400 OVER 2018 DESPITE LOSING OVER 31,000 JOBS FOR THE SCHOOL SUMMER BREAKS IN LOCAL, STATE AND CHARTER SCHOOLS, THE PHOENIX METRO STILL POSTED A JUNE YEAR-OVER-YEAR HIKE OF 68,400 NET NEW HIRES, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA OFFICE OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. That equals 87 percent of the new jobs in Arizona for June 2019.

In the Phoenix metro, advanced industry sectors are maintaining the major share of the job market, 60 percent of all private sector jobs in June 2018, compared to 49 percent of private sector jobs in June 2008. Strength in advanced industry jobs, according to economists, may make a market more recession resistant in a national economic downtown.

Advanced industries are manufacturing, business and financial services, bioscience and healthcare, and technology companies.

In the metro, the unemployment rate increased to 4.6 percent, up 0.2 percent over June 2018, and up 0.6 percent over May 2019. The jump in unemployment is directly related to layoffs in public education sectors.

The biggest Phoenix job gains over 2018 were reported in the big three Valley growth industries: Education, Bioscience and Health Services; Construction; and Professional, Scientific and Business Services. The three sectors gained 44,300 jobs this June, over the workforce in June 2018. Transportation and Warehousing hired 8,200 more employees this year than last. Manufacturing hit its 29th consecutive month of job gains adding 6,900 to the workforce this year over last year.

The private sector workforce in Phoenix increased, 3.5 percent in June. According to data compilations from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Phoenix metro topped national job growth in May with numbers about equal to June.

Across the state, the schools’ summer break resulted in June hiring offering 44,600 fewer jobs than May 2019.

Overall, the state is still 78,000 new jobs ahead of June 2018. In year-over-year data, Tucson added 7,300 new jobs, Yuma added 1,600, and Flagstaff picked up 1,000 new hires. For Yuma, it represented one of its largest jumps in 12-month job growth, 3.0 percent. That compares with job growth of 2 percent or less in all the other state metro areas.

Sierra Vista-Douglas metro lost 200 jobs in yearover-year data.

Even though April 2019 is still the record employment month for the metro area, the month-tomonth declines in hiring for May and June still leave the Valley with a total workforce over 2.1 million. In Arizona, the total workforce, including Phoenix metro, is 2.9 million for June 2019.

CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN ON ‘THE CITY OF THE FUTURE’ – CITY NORTH

PHOENIX’S ULTIMATE “LIVE, WORK, PLAY AND EXCEL ENVIRONMENT” WILL OFFER RETAIL, OFFICE AND RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES ON SUPERB FREEWAY FRONTAGE CROWN REALTY & DEVELOPMENT IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE ONSET OF CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY ON THE NEARLY 100-ACRE PROPERTY THAT SURROUNDS THE EXISTING HIGH STREET RETAIL, OFFICE AND RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY ADJACENT TO THE LOOP 101 IN NORTH PHOENIX. Coined the ‘City of the Future,’ City North has started construction on the horizontal infrastructure including water and sewer. Crown hired A.R. Mays for the all the infrastructure construction. Twenty million dollars is budgeted for this phase of the project. Vertical construction will start next year. Among the amenities, a 160,000-square-foot, four-story office building and 250 multifamily residential units will be developed in this first phase of the project that will sit on four acres. When completed, City North’s entire multifamily residential component will consist of 2,600 units and will comprise 32 acres of the City North development joining Class A offices and other uses in the thriving Desert Ridge area of Phoenix.

Crown acquired the nearly 100-acre City North

property in January that surrounds the existing High Street retail, office and residential community. The land had been the subject of litigation for nearly a decade and has been valued by the bankruptcy court for $121 million. Crown, which has developed the Omni Montelucia Resort and spearheaded the redevelopment of Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, plans to develop what will essentially be a new city and second urban node for Phoenix with City North.

A formal groundbreaking is planned in early October. The land is zoned for 2,500 residential units, 2 million square feet of office, 500 hotel rooms and 100,000 square feet of retail. It is adjacent to the 1.2 million-square-foot Desert Ridge Market Place and surrounding High Street development at the northwest corner of the Loop 101 and 56th Street.

Cushman & Wakefield has been retained as the brokers to market the first phase of City North’s multifamily residential component. Several local and national multifamily developers are competing to build the first place of the multifamily.

“We are thrilled construction is starting and our brokers are already at work finding the type of tenants and partners to bring one of the finest pieces of real estate in Arizona to life,” said Rick Carpinelli, Senior Vice President of Acquisition and Development at Crown. Carpinelli also oversees

Crown’s Arizona operations. “There is no doubt City North is one of the best pieces of real estate in the western United States and will soon offer a variety of residential units, retail, hotels and office space to complement its spectacular location.,” said Crown CEO and founder Robert Flaxman.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I start most of my days with a run around the 32nd Street corridor. You may have seen me out and about if you are up early driving. I use my morning runs to meditate and reflect which helps set the tone for my day. I have two high school age boys, so I interact with them a bit in the morning, kiss my wife and my dogs and then head to work. My work takes me all over the valley. There are days that I travel upward of 100 miles around town to meet with people and see them in their element. Being in their space and meeting key players with whom they work better enables me to assist them.

I am a people person and thoroughly enjoy connecting with others. Specifically, I am always eager to learn about who they are and what they value, so a lot of my job comes down to listening. Generally, I make it into the office at some point each day in order to meet with my staff, work on systems and assist clients. I end the day by spending time with my wife and the dogs, as well as the boys when they are not busy with school or activities. On evenings when I don’t have an event, I unwind by tending to my garden in the backyard, relaxing, setting an intention for the next day and heading to bed early. I love my life and am very grateful for it.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/ WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… This area is majestic. It gives me a sense of peace and I feel that it has tremendous potential. I truly enjoy getting to know my neighbors, seeing them out and about and working to cultivate that small town feel within a big city.

MY FAMILY… Is the best part of my life. My wife Kim is my best friend. My son Matthew is an avid runner (you might see him around too) and a senior in high school. Jack is a sophomore in high school and loves playing the trumpet in the marching band and playing tennis.

A

ccording to the 2019 Small Business Profile data released by the Office of Advocacy, there are 30.7 million small businesses in the United States that employ 59.9 million people, which makes up 47.3 percent of the private workforce.

With the economy on the rise and 1.8 million net new jobs created by small businesses in the latest year of data, it made me wonder, what does it take to create a job?

After raising the question with the owners of various companies, there were similar stories of job creation.

Businesses start with an idea. Whether it’s a married couple, long-time friends, or someone with a hobby, the thought of working for oneself and earning a living by doing what one loves is highly appealing. The potential for success and the dream of “making it big� drives many who start a small business.

Once the idea becomes actionable, the couple, the friends, or the individual needs startup capital. They dip into their savings, mortgage their house, or get a business loan to start building their company. Then, they often work 70 to 80 hours or more a

week building, creating, organizing, structuring, advertising, connecting, rewriting, networking, and more. They spend sleepless nights worrying if they will succeed and weekends catching up, while trying to manage work, family, and conserving every expense to ensure as much capital remains in the business as possible.

If the company is part of the 78 percent of startups that has made it through the first year, the owners can become quite tired of navigating these obstacles. That’s when they can potentially decide to hire help, thus create a job. That help often comes from family members, friends, neighbors, or others they personally know.

Now crossing the threshold from self-employed to employers of others, the small business owners spend considerable time and money trying to understand and comply with the tax codes, legislative acts, health care, state and local codes, and deal with the accounting. Suddenly, the owners don’t have much time to actually do the job that was once an exciting idea.

As the company grows and creates income, it is often forgotten by the customers, clients, and consumers that the earnings are commonly going

towards paying off the loans that started the company in the first place, and depending on their size, it may take a while.

Creating a job in a small business takes time, hard work, and multiple sacrifices. It is important for the company to have a growth period to reach the level of being able to financially support an employee.

About half of the establishments survive five or more years and only one-third last more than ten years.

At the end of the day, most of the small business owners will say that they are thankful for their business network and support from other small businesses and organizations. They wish people could understand and appreciate how hard they work. They want to be good role models for their children and teach them self-reliance and determination, as well as inspire them to pursue their own dreams.

They hope to earn respect through honesty and dedication as they grow their businesses. When added together, the small companies formed from those original ideas are the backbone of the American economy and need the most help in reducing the burdens they face in creating jobs and becoming successful.

U

ninterrupted, good, quality sleep is crucial for achieving optimal health, yet in America, about 70 percent of adults report having insufficient sleep each month.

It is estimated that up to 70 million Americans, of all ages, have sleeprelated problems. That is a HUGE number! Without adequate sleep, we open ourselves up to dysfunction that results in an increase in weight, risk of heart disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, immune system dysfunction, depression, anxiety, vitamin D deficiency and a decrease in cognitive performance.

I speak with people in the store every day that are trying to find things to help them sleep, and there are so many different products out there doing just that. One good thing to know is, at the root of sleep challenges there may be a number of underlying issues. Some of those issues are: imbalances in neurotransmitter function (like GABA, serotonin and dopamine, brain and adrenal connections), anxiety and stress, environmental factors and EMF’s.

Did you know certain medications, hormone shifts, parasites, food sensitivities, viruses and infections could also be at the root of why you are having a hard time getting the sleep you need? There are so many different reasons why you could be having difficulties, and that is why it is important to connect with the right people who can help you figure things out!

Until then, here are some things you can try: • Address issues like Sleep Apnea and Restless Legs Syndrome • Get exercise and plenty of light during the day • Find ways to manage your stress • Keep your bedroom cool and dark • Restrict Blue and artificial light a couple hours before bed • Have a ‘Caffeine Curfew’ before 4 p.m.

BACK TO SCHOOL: A NATUROPATHIC APPROACH

ummer is coming to a close and the kids are preparing for the new school year. Some of us are more susceptible to illnesses than others and it can be helpful to prepare the immune system prior to the school season. The germs, viruses and illnesses they are exposed to makes the entire family susceptible to common colds, flus and viral infections.

There are some simple, natural ways to strengthen and support immunity for the entire family.

SLEEP: Often times our kids have a different schedule in the summer. They stay up later and sleep in later. It is helpful to start a good sleeping routine a few weeks before school starts. Bedtimes should start earlier to properly adjust to the upcoming school schedule. Eliminate electronics at least 30-60 minutes before bed. Electronics overstimulate the brain which can lead to difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. Implement a healthy sleep routine that will last throughout the entire school year. The better-quality sleep we have, the stronger our immune system will be.

DIET: Highly processed foods and foods high in sugar can negatively affect the immune system making us more susceptible to common illnesses.

Nutrient dense foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and proteins can all help support a strong immune system.

In addition to food, drinking ample water will support the immune system. During any illness it is also important to decrease sugar and stay hydrated for a faster healing response.

SUPPORT THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM: Our digestive system is directly correlated with our immune system. Constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating are all factors that can decrease overall immunity. I often recommend school age children start a good probiotic to support the immune system and balance the gut flora.

Food sensitivities and/or food allergies can also hinder the immune system and should be avoided.

SAMBUCUS (ELDERBERRY): This is my favorite herb for kids and adults for general immune support. It is well tolerated and tastes delicious.

It is a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants to support the immune system. It can be taken

to strengthen the immune system as well as used during acute illness to help shorten the duration.

You can find over the counter syrups or make your own. It is a fun activity for the entire family.

NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES: Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 are common deficiencies that can hinder the immune system. It is important to have your levels checked to ensure proper supplementation. A high-quality multivitamin can also be a great addition to a daily supplement regimen.

ack to school already? The summer seemed to fly by and it’s once again time for kids to start back to school. With summer heat and monsoon season in full effect, every bit of advice to make life a little less hectic and eliminate the drama is welcome. We collected some great tips from teachers, parents, doctors, and other education and child experts to find some of the most practical and useful tips for making sure your child is on track and ready to go for the upcoming school year.

GET BACK INTO A ROUTINE One of the most important things you can do to get your kids on the right track for school is to set a routine and schedule for the school year.

This is the time to reset sleeping patterns, establish a wake up time, and set the guidelines for meals, chores, homework and activities. Make sure that you, your significant other, and your kids are on the same page with the schedule to make it easier for the whole family. Some of the items to build into your routine include: • Bed time and sleep schedule • Wake up time • Breakfast and dinner • Homework schedule • Extra activities Getting enough sleep is one of the most critical factors in making sure that a child does well in school. Children who do not get enough sleep have a hard time concentrating and learning to their full potential. Insufficient sleep is also associated with lower academic achievement for older kids, in addition to higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness.

Experts agree that having a consistent bedtime routine and wake up time for your child is one of the best ways to make sure they get the right amount of sleep. They suggest starting to reset sleeping patterns about seven to 10 days before the first day of school. Make sure your kids get into a routine of going to bed and waking up with plenty of rest every day, so you can avoid this being a factor during the first week of school.

ESTABLISH HEALTHY EATING HABITS Another critically important factor in ensuring your kids are at their best during school is making sure that they eat right, especially at breakfast. Studies show that kids who eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast have better concentration and more energy for school. Make sure their breakfast contains some protein and enough calories to get them through to lunchtime. Plan ahead to make sure you either sign you child up for the hot lunch program, or have healthy choices available to include when packing lunch, so your kiddo doesn’t get hungry before the end of the day.

And don’t forget the after-school snack! My kid is always so hungry when I pick her up from school that she inhales any snack I give her.

Give your kid some healthy, but filling, options to keep them going all day long and give them the energy for homework and any activities they have after school is out.

SET THE STAGE FOR HOMEWORK AND STUDY So how do you bring it all together to help your student be a better learner? Experts recommend

setting academic goals as a first step. Work with your kid to help them think about their goals and grades, and how they plan to reach those goals, before they head into the school year. Help them plan ahead and establish good study habits, and let them know it’s okay to ask for help if they stumble over a subject during the school year.

Work with their teacher to help them understand any challenges or problems your child may have, and keep in touch throughout the school year to make sure you keep up with how they are doing in the classroom and whether you have concerns about assignments.

It’s also important to set aside a distraction-free space that can be used for doing homework.

Whether it’s in their bedroom or another quiet room in the house, make sure they have room to study with no TV, devices, or other attentiongrabbing distractions. Be sure to schedule time for homework into your child’s daily routine, and make the timeframe consistent.

Going back to school is a hectic time for kids and parents. You can take charge of the school year by planning ahead and setting the stage to make sure your child has the basic essentials available for being a successful student. Set the foundation with a regular routine, enough sleep, healthy food, good prioritization, and a quiet space to study – you kid will handle the rest in the classroom!

PVSCHOOLS EXPANDS EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING PROGRAMS

P

VSchools recently expanded its early childhood learning programs with the opening of the Little Cubs at the James P. Lee Early Childhood Learning Center, which is located at 3820 E. Nisbet Rd., Phoenix 85032.

“Little Cubs will provide our employees and working families in the community an option for childcare in the southern area of the district. This is the beginning of their experience with PVSchools,” said Jennifer Kelly, childcare coordinator with the Community Education Department.

The center is fully licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services. The program is open from 6:30 a.m-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and follows the school calendar. Classroom ratios for staff and children are as follows: • Infants 1:5 or 2:11 • One-year-old 1:6 or 2:13 • Two-year-old 2:8 • Three-year-old 1:13 One feature that stands out from other childcare programs is that the Little Cubs also has an onsite

registered nurse. Parents will have peace of mind knowing that a trained medical professional is onsite should a situation arise.

A SNAPSHOT OF THE PROGRAM Children attending the Little Cubs program participate in art, music, dramatic play, storytime, songs, and dance. “Children are naturally curious. We play with them, introduce toys or activities that are right for their age,” said Barbara Bush, a childcare associate at Pinnacle High School.

INFANTS AND TODDLERS PROGRAM Our Infants and Toddlers Program incorporates individual play using developmentally appropriate toys good for both large and small muscles, socialization with children in the classroom, storybooks, art activities, music, and movement. Caregivers also work on toilet training in the Toddler 2 classroom.

Children are diapered and fed on a fixed schedule.

3-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM A typical day will include large and small group activities that are developmentally appropriate for 3-year-olds. These will include activities in literature, early math, art, and music, as well as social

studies and science. Children will also have the opportunity to choose free choice dramatic play, use large muscles on the playground, develop social skills, and make friends.

Daily reports are provided to all parents. These reports include when diapers are changed, nap times, activities completed, food eaten, and eating time.

DIVE INTO AFTER-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS AT HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOLS

N

ow that it’s back-to-school time in the Valley, a growing number of parents are enrolling their children in swim lessons at a Hubbard Family Swim School. While the summer outdoor pool season might be drawing to a close, indoor swimming and swim lessons continue all year long at the Hubbard Family Swim Schools.

Founded in 1998 by co-owners Bob and Kathy Hubbard – world-renowned experts and educators in the field of infant swimming – the swim schools offer lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. The Hubbard’s basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim.

Learning to swim should not be a choice.

“Back-to-school time in August is a great time to enroll children in swim lessons during the week or on the weekend,” says Bob Hubbard. “Not only is swimming excellent exercise for children to enjoy after school and a wonderful way for them to burn off energy, we don’t want children to lose the important swim skills and swim strokes they learned over the summer.” After-school swim lessons are available on weekdays until 7 p.m.

“We also have many moms who happily enroll their toddlers and preschoolers for swim lessons during the morning and early afternoon hours when their older children return to school,” says Kathy Hubbard. “While the older siblings are at school, the younger siblings have fun going to swim school!”

Children who learn how to swim are actually demonstrating more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to world-leading research led by Griffith University in Australia. Their 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have an advantage when starting school.

and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school.

“We have spent over 20 years here in Arizona watching thousands of children under the age of four become calm and confident swimmers,” adds Kathy. “It’s such a joy for us to help introduce children to the wonderful sport of swimming which can definitely become a life-long sport.”

Many students who grew up taking swim lessons at Hubbard also went on to have competitive swim careers in high school and college.

Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition to school – their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development.

There are currently three Hubbard Family Swim School locations around the Valley - in Phoenix, Peoria, and Mesa - and the temperature of the indoor pools at each location remains at a very comfortable 90 degrees year-round.

The study surveyed 7,000 parents from Australia, New Zealand and the U.S., over three years.

eople often ask me how much money or what the threshold net worth is before they need a Revocable Living Trust. There is no magic number. The factors that go into the decision include family situation, types of assets, location of real property, and, yes, net worth. The next question I’m asked is, why have a Trust?

THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST GIVES INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU ARE INCAPACITATED Both a Will and a Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets if you become incapacitated. The Trust allows a successor you have chosen to step into your shoes to pay your bills, manage your assets, sell property if needed, and generally handle your financial affairs. The Trust makes it easy for someone to step in to assist when you need help.

WITHOUT THE TRUST WE FILE FOR CONSERVATORSHIP Without a Trust, control over your finances may require a court proceeding known as a conservatorship. One attor-

ney I know who does these proceedings called conservatorships “cumbersome.”

They are also quite costly…far more than the cost of creating a Trust.

Money isn’t the only cost of conservatorship. Your family is asking the court to declare you incompetent. This takes a huge emotional toll on everyone. It takes time too, both to have the proceeding, and to make accountings to the court according to its rigorous guidelines.

Last, the conservatorship is a very public affair. There are no locked doors in the courthouse on these. With the Trust, we maintain our privacy. We state in the Trust how and when it should be decided that we can no longer handle our affairs.

THE BOTTOM LINE It is important to be sure someone can manage your affairs if you are incapacitated. The Trust is an ideal way to assure a smooth transition if you can no longer manage your affairs.

FRUSTRATED WITH AUTOMATED PHONE MESSAGES?

I

f you have a phone, even a land line, you’ve been robocalled.

Maybe the number popped up as your own, which is always a bit creepy. Perhaps you answered because the caller ID showed a phone number with a local area code. But instead of a neighbor’s voice, you heard a recording of a woman explaining how she can help with all that money you allegedly owe the IRS (the woman is always remarkably chipper given the bad news she delivers). Occasionally, people are told a court has ordered them to pay money to resolve litigation, an especially odd call for those who have never sued or been sued.

Phone scams go all the way back to 1888 when the phone was such cutting-edge tech that only the wealthiest people had one. And as the phone technology evolved, so did the scams,

until eventually we ended up with the robocall. Today, it’s the Internet that enables robocalls to exist because that’s how most calls are now connected.

But how did robots get your phone number?

There are different kinds of robocalls but the basic technology that enables them is the same. An automated system, often overseas, gets phone numbers from marketing lists, data leaks (like when a hotel’s records are hacked) or public records. The system, run by just one or a few individuals, calls up to millions of people every day. And although the vast majority of people receiving these calls hang up, don’t answer or block the call, enough people pay the alleged “debt” that robocalling is obscenely profitable for scammers.

There have been attempts to thwart the insidious, automated evil that buzzes your phone throughout the day.

Robocalls are one of the few things Congress agrees on so they have closed a loophole scammers used by updating some language in existing laws. Lawmakers are also flirting with the idea of levying fines on robocallers and passing laws that would make cooperating with other countries to stop robocalling operations easier. In the past two months, significant new legislation is in the forefront for carriers to provide relief.

The FCC is mostly on board, too. Taking a James Bond approach, the FCC worked with telecom companies to develop a way to authenticate phone numbers using what’s known as the SHAKEN/STIR protocols and encourages phone companies to adopt them.

Meanwhile, there are some things you can do to protect yourself. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all have an app for that and usually it’s already turned on for you. Check with your carrier.

But if calls are still getting through or you want more customization, other apps like Robokiller are available for both Android and iPhone users. There’s a “National Do Not Call Registry,” although be warned that it is not as robust an action as it used to be. You can follow the guidelines in a list from the FCC, which you can find at www. fcc.gov/consumers/guides and search for robocall help guides. Finally, no matter how tempting, don’t engage with robocallers!

HOME FUR GOOD NO-KILL SHELTER CELEBRATES 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

T

here are many reasons to adopt a pet and rescue centers around the valley make it possible to find the forever pet for just about every person wanting to “adopt versus shop.” Home Fur Good, located at 10220 North 32nd Street in the 32nd Street and Shea neighborhood, is just one such place. The no-kill animal rescue and placement center is celebrating its 10-year anniversary of dedication to saving animals from euthanasia and finding them a happy home —“fur good.”

Crossman has been volunteering with the organization for the past six years, and admits she was at first hesitant to get involved because she thought it might be too sad. She quickly discovered Home Fur Good is a happy place — one where animals are very well cared for in a clean, safe and comfortable environment. “Every single animal is treated with care and we take the time to get to know them and their personalities so we can really find them the best fit,” says Avery. “When we find them a home, we want it to be their permanent home.”

At any given time, Home Fur Good has approximately 70 animals in their care.

When the organization was looking to relocate about five years ago from their previous facility at 32nd Street and Bell Road, they wanted to remain in the neighborhood from which so many of their volunteers and supporters hail.

“We felt strongly about staying in this community,” she says. “We love this area, the community has been supportive to us and we love to support our neighboring businesses, too.”

The building in which the organization currently resides is a former child care center that they transformed into the temporary home for cats and dogs until they are adopted. It features huge backyards, large areas for the dogs to run around, throw the ball to and run around, and a free-roaming cat room.

The organization’s mission is to end euthanasia in Maricopa County, so Home Fur Good rescues all their animals from the Maricopa County shelter — particularly the ones that are up for euthanasia, not just the cutest or most easily adoptable ones. Avery says they believe “there is a lid for every pot,” — and they are dedicated to finding those matches.

“There are some animals that need extra time with us, but when the right owner comes in for that pet, it makes it all worthwhile.” The organization insists on having all family members (including other pets in the home) meet the pet prior to adoption and makes sure their pets will be indoor pets before they can be adopted. Each animal is also spayed or neutered

before they are sent to their permanent home. Home Fur Good offers a low-cost dental clinic and a low-cost vaccine clinic with a certified vet to help support the shelter and prevent animals from being put up for adoption due to high-costs of their healthcare.

In their 10 years of existence, Home Fur Good has found homes for approximately 500,000 animals and has been part of an impact to drastically reduce euthanasia rates in the Valley. On September 14, the organization will celebrate their anniversary and these efforts with a gala held at Starfire Golf Club featuring cocktails, a plated dinner and entertainment including a magician and comedian — promising a fun evening dedicated to the continued care of valley pets in need of a fur-ever home. or the seventh year in a row, Arizona Helping Hands (“AHH”) teamed up with community nonprofit organizations and local businesses to help children in foster care prepare for the challenges of a new school year.

Arizona Helping Hands, in collaboration with Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and the Back to School Clothing Drive, provided free backpacks, along with a complete set of clothing, to 1,964 boys and girls in Arizona’s foster care system at Grand Canyon University on July 25. Grade-appropriate backpacks were stuffed with everything from crayons to notebooks, providing children with the necessary supplies needed to start the new school year.

Foundation support from the BHHS Legacy Foundation and Executive Council Charities provided major funding for the project, and individual donors have stepped up by pitching in $25 to buy a new backpack filled with supplies. “It truly takes a village to achieve such big results in our Back to School Drive, and it’s a beautiful thing to see so many coming together to help

children who have been abused and neglected to take pride as they go back to school,” says Dan Shufelt, President, and CEO of Arizona Helping Hands.

Local businesses also partnered with Arizona Helping Hands in the effort, sponsoring collection drives or by filling backpacks as a team building experience at the AHH distribution center. This year Applebee’s and Dillard’s among many others have joined the effort.

Hundreds of volunteers from Living Spaces, Fiesta Bowl, JPMorgan Chase and more worked hard to help the kids!

“It’s our goal to help boys and girls in foster care walk proud as they begin the new school year,” Shufelt tells us. “Once again our community has rallied around this cause to help put a smile on a child’s face, or a spring in their step, as they embark on a new year of school.”

ARIZONA SUNRAYS COACH DAN WITENSTEIN INDUCTED INTO ARIZONA GYMNASTICS HALL OF FAME

F

or more than 40 years, Dan Witenstein has coached and guided hundreds of Arizona’s top female gymnasts and has proudly watched as his athletes received numerous awards, medals, trophies, and full-ride collegiate scholarships.

On June 8, however, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, it was Witenstein’s turn to officially ascend the podium and receive a muchdeserved honor himself - an induction into the Arizona Gymnastics Hall of Fame at the USA Gymnastics State Awards Banquet. Witenstein is currently the co-owner and team director of the popular Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance Centers.

Originally from Maryland, Witenstein was a collegiate gymnast who competed for Arizona State University (ASU) for three years and eventually became Assistant Coach for the ASU women’s team between 1980 and 1985. During his time there, the women’s gymnastics team placed among the top six

Together, the couple bought Sunland Gymnastics & Dance in Phoenix, changed the name to Arizona Sunrays, and set out to create the highest quality programs for children.

Today, there are two Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance Center locations - one in NE Phoenix and the other in Arcadia - with more than 2,000 students currently enrolled.

CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY, EXPANSION

ince the explosion of Pinterest in 2010, there is no limit to the inspiration of all things DIY for wanna-be crafters that exists at the touch of an app or the click of a mouse. Since then, sipping wine and crafting together has become a common occurrence among girlfriends and mom groups — and now includes date-nighters and crafty-minded men, too! Many of these groups find themselves at Craft Nights by The Hippie Hobby, a woman-owned DIY arts and crafts studio located just north

of the burgeoning intersection of 32nd Street and Shea.

It was just over a year ago that friends and co-owners Heidi Koffman and Jennifer Racer opened the doors to Craft Nights with a dream to offer neighborhood residents and locals a place to get together, hang out and craft to their hearts’ desires. The idea for their studio began as the next phase of their subscription box company called The Hippie Hobby, which internationally shipped lip

The impetus for that business began by getting groups of friends and neighbors together at their houses to make crafts such as lip balm using essential oils. “During the Fall of 2017 the idea for our studio came to us one night on the back patio while we were drinking wine,” says Heidi. She reveals the two friends were discussing the state of their subscription box business because shipping prices were increasing and ultimately they missed getting people together to craft as a community. “We literally decided that we’d find a place we could afford to rent even if no one ever came through the door.” But that never proved to be an issue.

Soon after that wine-inspired conversation, Heidi and Jennifer found and fell in love with the location of their studio, which Heidi calls a super trendy area of the “Shea-borhood.”

They opened Craft Nights offering crafts such as string art sessions and quickly began selling out their classes designed for 36 people. They quickly began offering other events such as paint nights, wood sign making, dream catchers, custom welcome doormats, and plant and paint nights — and also began reaching out to neighboring businesses to collaborate on events at locations beyond their studio including paint night on the patio and dream catcher crafts at 32 Shea, Aioli Burger, Lovecraft, OHSO Paradise Valley and more.

“This is a very powerful neighborhood, and the community and businesses all really support one

another,” says Heidi. “We have a super-big passion for helping other businesses find success, and we have the strength to help bring 25 to 30 people into their space and give them business on a slower night of the week.” Understanding that they are more powerful in numbers, Heidi uses her marketing skills to build relationships with other business owners in an effort to help all their businesses become more successful.

“When we combine forces, we can offer people a fun outdoor event at a great local restaurant and we can continue to build the support for this area, which is such a uniquely smallbusiness driven community.”

While Heidi serves the business end of their company, she gives all creative credit to her artistically inclined business partner, saying that Jennifer (and her fine arts background) is responsible for all the crafty elements of the company — from the unique design, feel and aesthetics of the space to the inspiration for class offerings. “We are super compatible and I’ve learned a lot from her,” she says, adding jokingly, “I know my primary colors now.” As Craft Nights

Currently, string art, paint nights, plant and paint nights, dream catchers and birthday calendar crafts classes are offered on a regular basis. Classes range from one and a half to two hours and price includes all supplies needed to create the craft. And while crafts look like professional pieces north32ndnews.com

Each class also includes tutorial from a Craft Nights instructor, all of whom are either teachers or who have art backgrounds. “We began with two instructors and have rapidly grown to hiring nine, many who reside in the neighborhood,” says Heidi.

Paint night courses typically feature a specific piece of art that class participants create on canvas with step-by-step tutorial but are free to customize with colors of their preference. String art templates are nearly limitless so locals can create the state of Arizona with a heart, beer lovers can create pint glasses out of string patterns and nature buffs can choose a cactus or hummingbird template. The birthday calendar workshop gives participants the supplies and instruction to create a wooden sign calendar complete with wooden discs and hardware with a selection of paint colors to customize each one — students need only bring a list of their special dates! And the increasingly popular plant and paint night gives participants the supplies

Beyond the classes that are offered regularly now, Craft Nights is expanding and relocating on September 1, 2019 to 3241 E Shea Blvd (near Michelina’s). At the new location they will have a splatter room that accommodates four people at a time for splatter paint crafts in the fall, which will make great memories for momdaughter or family outings as well as fun, creative (and a little messy!) date nights. Heidi and Jennifer were also recently gifted a kiln so they hope to offer pottery classes by the holiday season or early into 2020.

Craft Nights can also accommodate kids’ birthday parties and private events such as corporate or team building activities that can be held in studio or at a business, and in the fall the company plans to add more dedicated kids’ day craft events to their line-up.

“We would love to offer each specific class four to five times a month. We’re starting to see people that are coming back and bringing their friends, and we’re seeing a bigger increase in people from the community. We generally see groups of women, but we’re also starting to see more couples on date night because it’s something new and different to do,” she reveals.

“However, as we grow, we always want to keep our neighborhood feel. We strive to keep our classes

“The event is open to the public and free to attend, but we do ask you consider bringing a back-to-school item of your choosing when you come,” says Dinnigan, explaining the branch is dedicated to raising awareness as well as funds and critical needs for Homeward Bound. “All donations will go to directly support this Arizona nonprofit that serves the needs of homeless families, providing them with housing, job help, life skills, support services and emergency pantries. Their mission is to provide a hand up, not a hand out and create a real pathway out of poverty for these families.”

PENELOPE THE THERAPY PIG CELEBRATES THE YEAR OF THE PIG

A

ccording to the Chinese Zodiac, 2019 is the Year of the Pig. Those born under this sign are often gentle and optimistic, kindhearted and loyal -- all traits that best describe Penelope the Therapy pig and her service to the special needs’ community.

Now four years old, the potbellied pig was adopted at six weeks by Tosha Tharp-Gaitanis. Tosha, the mother of a son with Autism and founder of a local 501(c)(3) organization, Pawsitive Friendships, felt a pig would be an original addition to their animal family which, up until then, consisted solely of French Bulldogs.

Tosha’s son was six when Penelope entered his life. Despite being highly vocal and energetic, he found loudness – both voices and noises – unbearable.

To interact positively with Penelope required him to practice his selfcontrol and regulate his body movements. But practice makes perfect, and thanks to the arduous but ultimately rewarding sessions, Tosha’s son and Penelope formed a close and permanent bond. Penelope’s ability to tolerate the stops and starts, the frenzy and “fireworks” was unique, provided she knew Tosha was there and that food was within reach.

Wearing a single strand of pearls with a royal blue flower and hooves sparkling for the occasion, she graciously accepted the award, dedicating it to the special children whose lives she’s already impacted and to those she hopes to “pawsitively” impact in the future.

KARSTEN’S ACE HARDWARE: WOOD-PELLET GRILLS

W

hy are wood-pellet grills one of the most popular grills on the market today?

Because they are the most versatile!

But maybe the first question to ask is “what is a wood-fired grill?” Pellet grills as they are known, such as the Ace Hardware-exclusive Traeger Ironwood 650, use compressed wood pellets as a fuel source rather than propane or charcoal. There are a wide variety of pellets available including Mesquite, Hickory, Oak, Apple, Cherry and a very special Reserve Blend available exclusively at Ace Hardware.

What’s cool about cooking with wood is the flavor that can imparted into whatever it is you’re cooking – meat, fish, vegetables or desserts. The Traeger grills can smoke at a low temp, bake at a hotter temp, and finally grill at the highest temps.

One misunderstanding of pellet grills is that they are simply “smokers” – low temp grills that are used to smoke meats. While a Traeger Ironwood does an outstanding job smoking meat, Traegers are not just for grilling big cuts of meat. Steaks are delicious and easy to grill too! Read on to get the tips and tricks to making a restaurant quality steak on your wood-fired Traeger Grill!

INGREDIENTS: Start off by collecting the key ingredients. Use your favorite oil, spice or rub and your favorite cut of quality steak. We really like the Traeger Prime Rib Rub. Save the expensive olive oil for your salad as any quality oil will work well for this recipe.

PREP: Use a cast iron ribbed griddle for your steak and place the griddle on the grilling grates. Your griddle should be cold and placed onto the cold grates,

so don't heat it up first. You will want to position the griddle on the center of the heat shield. Pour in your desired wood pellets into the hopper - try the Reserve Blend! Then, preheat the Traeger to the highest temperature. Heat the griddle to around 550 surface degrees. Cast iron heats up a bit slow but then amplifies and retains that heat for a longer period.

Remove the steak from the packaging and let it rest for about five minutes so the meat can relax before being grilled.

Then, add the desired seasoning to the front and back of the steak, and add a small amount of oil to the griddle.

GRILLING: Now for the fun part!

Place the steak onto the griddle and close the lid. Cook the steak for five to seven minutes and then flip it onto the other side. Remove the steak after cooking on griddle for five additional minutes. Let the steak sit on a plate outside the Traeger for about five minutes.

ur most unusual and loveable weather succumbs to the unfunny humor of Mother Nature and the main topic in the news come July-August. The unbelievable monsoons settle heavy dust over our beautiful city of Phoenix and surrounding areas. The reason we love these ‘haboobs’ is the robust rain that falls without fail on our severely dry deserts.

We all become a bit dizzy with the most ‘uncommon sensical’ decisions when driving our vehicles. Dry roads become raging rivers, freeways become lakes and a lot of our Arizonians think they are Super Heroes!

As an automotive repair center, we see many of these car issues that just didn’t make it through their ‘superhero’ attempts through the door

I hate to think that the heat has really gotten the best our AZ residents, but to think that the vast has no “common sense” baffles me. Didn’t our mothers warn us to stay out of the water when we were little at one point?

Arizona is the only state that has gone so far as to enact and create a “Stupid Motorist’ law. This law states that any motorist who becomes stranded after driving around barricades to enter a flooded stretch of roadway may be charged for the cost of their rescue. The 'stupid-motorist law' is not a chargeable statute; to be fined under the law, a motorist must commit at least one other violation.

Our first responders should be given all the kudos we can adorn on them to make it necessary to rescue these non-sensical decisions of drivers and put their own lives in jeopardy.

The monsoon is a seasonal shift in wind direction, so there can be dry monsoon winds and wet monsoon winds. With these forceful winds filled with dust, our facilities see the end damage of the pitting of windshields and car paint. We recommend a good wax and detail to your car investment before the season hits.

Cats and dogs are brought to shelters for a variety of reasons, whether their owners could no longer care for them, they were found on the street, or they came from an abusive home.

While shelters may be a step up from where they came from, it’s not a place to live out the rest of their days. You can help to give a pet, or two (or three or four!) a second chance at life! Be that beacon of light for a pet in need!

ome four decades ago, a small group of local volunteers envisioned a more compassionate way of caring for people nearing the end of their lives. They were deeply moved by a concept called “hospice” that was prevalent in England and longed to bring it to Arizona. The mission was simple: Help patients spend their last moments in their own beds, surrounded by their loved ones. It’s no coincidence the word hospice is a derivative of “hospitality” — making people feel comfortable in their own homes.

This core group, which included the Rev. Gerald Roseberry and nurses Mary Audrey Mellow and Blanche Hopkins, began changing how that final journey would look and feel. In 1977, they formed not-for-profit Valley of the Sun Hospice — later changed to Hospice of the Valley — and began carrying out a mission of “comfort and dignity.” They cared for patients’ physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs; visiting the terminally ill at home to manage their pain and offer peace and comfort.

They also provided support to family members as they struggled to cope with impending loss.

Until Medicare created a hospice benefit in 1982, the care given during those initial five years was seldom reimbursed. The early “friends of hospice” raised money to cover costs, because the goal was to always provide the care, regardless of ability to pay.

ne of our favorite places to visit this time of year is Arizona’s original State Capital, Prescott. Only about 90 minutes north of Phoenix, Prescott has a cooler climate in the summer and plenty of small-town adventure for the whole family. The Prescott National Forest surrounds this historic western town, with beautiful forestland and gorgeous mountain views, perfect for hiking, camping and fishing. Prescott is a great place to visit for a day trip, or a weekend road trip. Here are some of our favorite spots to see when we visit the home of the World’s Oldest Rodeo.

WHISKEY ROW AND COURTHOUSE PLAZA One of the most well-known, and somewhat notorious, places to see in Prescott is the heart of downtown known as Whiskey Row. Once home to as many as 40 saloons on one block, Whiskey Row embodies the wild west history of Prescott and is a fun place to find everything from art galleries, boutiques and shops, to ice cream parlors and restaurants.

You can visit the oldest frontier saloon in Arizona, The Palace, which once hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday. Then walk across the street to the historic

SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM The Sharlot Hall Museum is a fascinating place to visit, and just a short walk from the Courthouse Plaza and Whiskey Row. The museum lets visitors walk through a historic collection of buildings and displays that represent the history and heritage of Arizona during Territorial times.

This educational and cultural center was named after its founder, Sharlot Mabridth Hall, who was a wellknown poet, activist, and politician, as well as Arizona’s first territorial historian. In the early 19th century, Sharlot Hall began to collect both Native American and pioneer artifacts to create a historical museum to preserve the heritage and culture of Arizona.

HASSAYAMPA INN The Hassayampa Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel in downtown Prescott, and a favorite place for visitors to stay. Opened in 1927, the Hassayampa Inn was one of the first large hotels in town and preserves its heritage with an ornately decorated lobby, bar and restaurant. The old-fashioned elevator is original and must be operated by hotel staff. It also happens to

be the location of quite a few different reported ghost sightings and one of Prescott’s most notorious hauntings.

If you are in the mood for a slice of history and a good ghost story, the Hassayampa Inn is worth a weekend visit.

camping, hiking and boating. The trail is perfect for short hikes with kids, a two-mile trail that leads all the way around the lake and is wheelchair and stroller accessible on one side. There are also picnic tables and grills, as well as boat rentals in the summer.

HERITAGE PARK ZOO The Heritage Park Zoological Society is located on about ten acres just north of Prescott, overlooking Willow Lake.

This is a great zoo to visit with kids and it lives up to its motto of “Conservation through Education.” As well as offering sanctuary to many endangered species like the Mexican Gray Wolf, a tiger, tarantulas, and various reptiles, it also hosts animals rescued

by Arizona Game and Fish, such as a gray fox, mountain lion, and black bear. It provides visitors with a fantastic children’s playground, covered picnic pavilion, and interactive animal experiences.

WATSON LAKE Another one of our favorite outdoor spots in Prescott is Watson Lake, located just a few miles from downtown Prescott. This beautiful lake is surrounded by large granite boulders, which makes it great for hiking, fishing and boating. Watson Lake has picnic tables, campgrounds, and playground areas for kids, and hosts many local events and group activities. The hiking trail is longer and more challenging than Lynx Lake, but the path through the rocky terrain showcases it’s best feature, the stunning lakeside views from every angle.

LYNX LAKE We love to visit Prescott in the summer months, because it has perfect hiking weather! One of our favorite spots to hike is the lovely Lynx Lake, located just 15 minutes Southeast of Prescott. Very close and easy to reach through the Prescott National Forest, this lake is a great place for fishing,
