CANCER RESPONSE TEAM

C

ancer Response Team, Inc. is a local Phoenix nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering families in Arizona with alternative pediatric cancer treatment awareness, and providing financial assistance to those families who choose alternative/integrative options alongside conventional medicine.

We launched this non-profit organization to support the families of children facing a cancer diagnosis. Evidence based treatments combined with complementary therapies can reduce side effects and improve effectiveness; ultimately improving quality of life and prognosis. Unfortunately, some complementary therapies and treatments are often not covered by traditional insurance policies. “Cancer Response Team (CRT) is here to empower, educate and be a resource for Arizona families and assist financially” said Jacki Wilson, Chief Marketing Officer and Board Member. WHY CRT WAS STARTED Stefan Moore, CRT’s Founder, had the heartbreaking agony of losing his precious 13 year old daughter, Ashley, to brain cancer. When she was first diagnosed they were shocked, felt helpless and like most parents trusted her doctors to cure her disease. Ashley went through the traditional chemotherapy and radiation treatments and standard protocol. By the time her parents were able to fully educate themselves on alternative and integrative options, chemotherapy and radiation had done such harm and the cancer had spread. Leaving them to question “WHY” these options aren’t made available as an initial treatment plan. So as a promise to Ashley before she passed, Stefan started CRT.

CRT is looking to the Phoenix community for volunteers and donations and would greatly appreciate any considerations for grants, state tax donations and community event participation. Follow Cancer Response Team on Facebook and Instagram or visit cancerreponseteam.org for more information. Contact jwilson@cancerreponseteam to volunteer or donate. Help CRT make a difference in our community and with families who need it. Cancer Response Team, Inc. 20235 N. Cave Creek Road P.O. 104-184 Phoenix, AZ 85024

“We firmly believe that every individual should have choices and options when forced to face the crisis of a cancer diagnosis of a loved one” said Stefan. CRT pledges to provide needed financial assistance to support families in whatever treatment options they wish to pursue which is done through donations, corporate sponsorships and matching programs. Alongside financial assistance, CRT also visits Phoenix Children’s Hospital a few times a year with blankets and special characters to bring even a little bit of joy. ARIZONA SUNRAYS GYMNASTICS & DANCE CENTER ARIZONA SUNRAYS GYMNASTICS & DANCE CENTER HAS MOVED ONE MILE NORTH FROM ITS LONG TIME THUNDERBIRD LOCATION TO A 34,000 SQUARE FOOT, NEWLY CONSTRUCTED, STATE-OFTHE-ART FACILITY THAT IS LIGHTFILLED AND ENERGY EFFICIENT. This long-running gymnastics and dance center - now celebrating 28 years in business and coowned by Julie and Dan Witenstein - not only features brand new pieces of gymnastics equipment, five in-ground trampolines, but there are also three, larger dance studios and even a licensed Active Preschool! Their weekly yoga classes and popular “Ninja Zone” classes for

boys and girls continue, plus, all-new classes in aerial arts, musical theatre and Twist n Tots.

Designed and built by local firms, Holly Street Studio Architects and Chasse Building Team, the new facility also features an increased viewing area for parents, outdoor courtyard, a café, gift shop, and much larger parking area. Mayor Stanton, also a Sunray’s customer, stated that the new facility “is the crown jewel of the N. 32nd Street Corridor!” This project was years in the making. One hurdle was finding the right site in their current neighborhood. They finally found it on an abandoned-looking four-acre former eyesore they had driven by for years!

“Staying in the neighborhood that has supported us for so long was very important to us.” Julie explains. “Our confidence in our staff and the tremendous job they do is what gave us the courage to move forward with this dream adventure,” she added.

Arizona Sunrays draws over 2,000 families per week to the North 32nd Street Corridor and features local businesses: Karl’s Quality Bakery, ROC2 coffee, China Mist teas, AZ Pops and Salad Dash in their café. Community members are invited to stop by the front desk for a visitor pass and receive a guided tour of their new facility which is open seven days a week.

NEWS FROM PHOENIX DISTRICT 3 COUNCILWOMAN STARK I AM THRILLED THAT ON JUNE 11, 2018, MY PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL COLLEAGUES AND I UNANIMOUSLY VOTED TO SELECT DISTRICT 1 COUNCILWOMAN THELDA WILLIAMS TO SERVE AS THE CITY’S MAYOR PRO TEMPORE. The election to choose a new mayor was required by the City Charter following the resignation of Mayor Greg Stanton last month. Williams will serve the dual-role as Mayor and District 1 Councilwoman. “It is a tremendous honor to earn the

support of my colleagues to serve as mayor,” said Williams. “I look forward to working with the entire City Council in a cooperative way to meet the needs of the people we serve.”

Williams said her highest priorities over the next few months will be public safety as well as street and water infrastructure. This is her third time serving as Phoenix mayor. Williams was elected by her colleagues as interim mayor in 1994 following Mayor Paul Johnson’s resignation, and ascended from vice mayor to mayor for a brief

period in 2012 following the resignation of Mayor Phil Gordon. Thelda Williams has served as the Council’s District 1 representative since 2008, and previously served on the Council from 1989 to 1996. Williams is currently the City’s representative on the boards of Arizona Municipal Water Users Association, Valley Metro RPTA, Valley Metro Rail, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and the Luke Air Force Base West Valley Council. The special election for voters to

choose a new mayor will be held on November 6, 2018. If there is a need for a run-off election, it will be held on March 12, 2019, and Williams will remain in the role until a new mayor is sworn in. Respectfully, Debra Stark Councilwoman City of Phoenix, Council District 3 #phxD3 602-262-7441 council.district.3@phoenix.gov phoenix.gov/district3

CITY NEWS SAN DIEGO DEVELOPER SUCCESSFULLY BIDS $26.5 MILLION FOR 93 ACRES OF STATE TRUST LAND NEAR TURF PARADISE PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT ARIZONA K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION SUNBELT LAND HOLDINGS LP OF SAN DIEGO SUCCESSFULLY BID $26.5 MILLION FOR APPROXIMATELY 93 ACRES OF STATE TRUST LAND NEAR THE TURF PARADISE RACETRACK AT AN ARIZONA STATE LAND DEPARTMENT AUCTION. The 93.257-acre subject parcel, located south and west of the southwest corner of 19th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, is zoned for a planned community development. Turf Paradise is just east of the subject parcel, across 19th Avenue.

The opening bid was $18 million, the appraised value of the subject parcel. Proceeds from the resulting sale will be placed in a permanent fund whose proceeds benefit Arizona’s K-12 public schools. The permanent fund is administered by the Arizona State Treasurer. “The Land Department’s mission is to manage assets of a multigenerational perpetual Trust for both its beneficiaries and for the future of this State,” State Land Commissioner Lisa Atkins said. “The sale of mature assets

such as this parcel is an example of that responsible, sustainable management, providing financial growth to Trust beneficiaries and contributing to economic growth for the people of Arizona.” K-12 public education is by far the largest beneficiary of Trust land managed by the Arizona State Land Department, whose mission since 1915 is to manage the assets of a multi-generational perpetual trust in alignment with the interests of the Trust’s 13 beneficiaries and Arizona’s future.

All uses of the land and resources held in the Trust must benefit the Trust, a fact that distinguishes it from the way public land, such as parks or national forests, may be used or managed. While public use of Trust land is not prohibited, it is regulated to ensure protection of the land and compensation to the beneficiaries for its use. Today the Arizona State Land Department pro-actively manages more than 9.2 million acres of Trust land, which is 13 percent of the land within the State of Arizona.

MVD URGES ONLINE CUSTOMERS NOT TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT’S FREE SOME WEBSITES AND SOCIAL MEDIA OFFER BAD DEALS FOR MVD SERVICES SEARCHING FOR THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION ONLINE? Not only should you go to the right website, you also need to be

wary of a new trend of people using social media to offer services that are actually free. “We’ve recently seen Facebook traffic with people offering to sell materials and tutor potential teenage drivers on how to pass the learner’s permit test,” said MVD Stakeholder Relations Manager Jennifer Bowser-Richards. “While offering those services isn’t illegal, people should know that they can get the same information at no cost at the ADOT MVD website,” she said. “We’ve offered free online practice tests for years and if someone takes the three 30-question exams, they will see almost every question offered. It makes no sense to pay someone for these materials.”

She added, “Customers should also be cautious when doing a web search for the MVD. Doing a search for the ‘Arizona DMV’, or ‘DMV Arizona’ will take you to a copycat webpage not affiliated with ADOT. Customers who use those sites will often be charged much larger fees than they would through the MVD, and in some cases they are paying exorbitant prices for something that’s actually free.” MVD offers services through www.ServiceArizona. com, and customers accessing ServiceArizona. com may also set up a personal MVD account in the AZ MVD Now application. MVD also has a general information website at www.azdot.gov/mvd

PRESS COFFEE ROASTERS HAS ANNOUNCED IT WILL BUILD A FLAGSHIP ROASTING FACILITY IN THE 32ND & SHEA NEIGHBORHOOD OF NORTH PHOENIX. The 5,600 sqft facility at 10443 N. 32nd St. will be a full production site for Press Coffee’s whole bean roasting operations. It will also be open to the public with a fully functioning café serving drinks and food with plenty of meeting space. Expected completion of the $3.5 million project is Spring 2019. Co-owners Steve Kraus, Jason Kyle and Alex Mason describe the new roastery as an ongoing commitment from Press to be Arizona’s own local coffee roaster. Kraus opened the first Press Coffee in North Phoenix in 2008 and Kyle and Mason are both bornand-raised Arizona natives. Said Kraus, “We are excited about the future of this iconic building. We wanted to go beyond just a production facility and create a space that allows us to share our love for coffee with the community.” The Construction Zone, LTD will serve as the general contractor, architect and designer. The modern design of the flagship roastery will showcase and educate the public about specialty coffee with viewing areas of the roasting rooms and space for Press’ Coffee 101 tastings. “This facility allows us to open our doors to the public and share our

passion for roasting amazing coffees from around the world,” said Kyle. “We’re also thrilled to help put Arizona on the specialty coffee national map.” The project will double Press’ production facilities. When the new roastery is open, its current whole bean roastery located in Phoenix will be dedicated for cold brew production. Press plans to expand cold brew production with the addition of a 15-barrel brewing system. “We’re proud to have helped lead the way in creating a great, locally made cold brew that Arizona can call its own,” said Mason. “This expansion allows us to serve cold brew to even more of Arizona.” Press has been Arizona’s own local coffee roaster since 2008. It has seven Valley locations in Scottsdale, Tempe, Phoenix and Chandler. Visit Press Coffee online at presscoffee.com and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @ presscoffee. HI, MY NAME IS...

PROFILE ON LOCAL BUSINESS: Matthew DeYoung

MY COMPANY & TITLE IS… Owner/Operator of Jet’s Pizza.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… a little gym time first thing to get my metabolism going. Trust me, being exposed to delicious pizza all day can be tough! I literally eat it almost every day. Then, it’s off to the shop. At Jet’s Pizza, we make our dough fresh in house every morning. Getting there nice and early ensures that we’ll be prepared for whatever the day should have in store for us. The rest of the day typically includes making product, working with customers, employees and vendors. No two days are the same in this industry. That’s why I enjoy it so much. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/ WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… the people, the schools, the restaurants, and the landscape…what’s not to like? MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Shawshank Redemption. It has been one of my favorites since the mid 90’s. MY FAMILY… is simply the best. I’m so incredibly fortunate. We’re all entrepreneurs with different passions. Although they still live back in the Midwest, they all aspire to be in AZ within the next couple years. THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… being able to let go and trust that my employees are fully capable. I’ve always been the hands-on type. I still am, but I’ve come to the realization that I can’t do it all. I’ve been lucky enough to find some great people to help me on this journey right here in the North 32nd area. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… Pizza! Even when I’m off the clock or out of town, it’s always my go-to.

Get your business in front of over 55,000 readers each month in North 32nd area’s ONLY hyper-local newspaper! 8 • July 2018 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a professional golfer. It’s a good thing I went in a different direction, as anyone who has golfed with me can attest.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... anything by Jason Aldean. Karaoke nights are always fun, but kind of like my golf game. Anyone that’s gone with me knows I need to stick to my day job. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… sorry... I have two. Without a doubt, my parents. They’re polar opposites and motivate me in completely different ways. My mom is the sweet, reserved, organized and hardworking one. My dad doesn’t know how to turn on a computer, but he’s aggressive, pretty much fearless and kills you with his natural charm. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… when my barber pulled out a Dave Chappelle quote out of nowhere. THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… being out on the Great Lakes with my family in the summer. It’s hard to beat the Midwest in July/August. MY FIRST JOB WAS… working at a pet store. I would go in after school for a few hours every day. MY LIFE… has been a bit of an adventure. I’ve lived in 5 states in the last 7 years. I’ve had some success and I’ve fallen flat on my face. I am grateful for where I am today. I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… establishing the Jet’s brand in the valley and providing the best possible pizza experience. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS... my nephews. I have two siblings and they both have children. All boys.

BUSINESS PROS CONNECT by Natasha Beal

W

e’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not WHAT you know, but WHO you know.” This rings most true in the business world. Networking and running a successful business go hand in hand. It is an invaluable way to make new connections, learn from other business owners and tell others about your business. While at events, it is important to remember you that you are not just gaining exposure to the people in the room, you are building connections with their network too. Regular networking not only helps to raise your visibility in the community, but it is also a great way to increase your confidence. Confidence is a key attribute as a business owner, and your business growth is reliant on talking to people and making connections. So, how can you get the most out of a networking event? Ask the right questions. Good questions are a way of building relationships, and connecting with those that you meet. Here are some great, engaging questions to ask those that you meet: • “What business problem does your company solve?” • “Tell me why you love what you do” • “Who is your ideal client?” • “What sets you apart from others in your industry?” • “What’s the best thing that has happened in your business this year?” • “What kind of people can I introduce you to that would be a good fit for your business?” north32ndnews.com

• “How do you like to de-stress from work?” We recommend NOT starting a conversation with “What do you do?” This implies that you are only interested in what they do for business, and what they can do for you. You want to show that you are interested in who they are as a person as well. Remember, real conversations lead to real connections. And networking is all about the connections. Did you know that the North 32nd area has its own business networking group? North 32nd Business Pros Connect was created specifically for fellow entrepreneurs of North 32nd to form business relationships and exchange referrals. For more information visit www.facebook.com/groups/ north32ndbusinesspros Our next event will be held July 25th, from 9-10 a.m. at 10832 N. 32nd St. Phoenix, AZ 85028 inside of Craft Nights. This is a FREE, non-industry exclusive event. We would love to hear about you and your business. Be sure to bring plenty of business cards. NORTH 32ND NEWS • July 2018 • 9

P

arents are socking away more money for their children’s higher education, and they are doing so in smarter ways, suggests a new report from Sallie Mae. One-third of parents saved more for college this year than last, and the average amount saved -- $18,135 -- is the highest amount reported in the last five years of “How America Saves for College,” a national study by Sallie Mae and Ipsos.

After saving for general needs and emergencies, parents earmark funds for college more than for any other specific purpose, alongside retirement. So, how are they doing it? To keep their college savings on track, 61 percent of parents contribute a set amount to their college fund on a regular basis. To find more money for college, 30 percent of parents have cut back on discretionary spending, and 27 percent have reduced their household expenses. This year marks the first time that tax-advantaged 529 college savings plans hold the largest share of college savings, at 30 percent. “Most parents aspire to give their children the opportunity to attend college, and it is

encouraging to see them saving more, employing smart habits and taking deliberate actions to make college a reality,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. “Our research shows most parents are proactively preparing financially to give their children the advantages of higher education, and having a plan pays off.” Parents who have planned how they’ll pay for college have saved more than twice as much as those without a plan ($22,169 vs. $9,208). PARADISE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

GOVERNING BOARD APPROVES SALARY INCREASES

T

he Paradise Valley Unified School District's Governing Board unanimously approved staff salary increases at the June 5 Governing Board meeting. In April, the Board previously approved 3 percent increases to all employees due to the passage of a Maintenance and Operations Budget Override Election from last November. With the adopted State budget and increases to K-12 funding, the following was added: For Certified staff (teachers), an additional 9 percent increase to the base was approved. In total, certified staff will receive a 12 percent base increase. The starting salary for entry level new teachers with Bachelor of the Arts or Bachelor of

the Science degrees hired for 201819 school year will be $39,240.

For Educational Support Professionals (support staff), an additional 6 percent increase on the base to all employees at $11.01 and above, including classified exempt. In total, a 9 percent base increase was approved.

According to Mrs. Case, “these increases wouldn't be possible without the increased state funds and the amazing support of our voter approved override. The new starting teacher salary for the 2018-19 school year will be $39,240. Though not as much as our neighbors in contiguous states, it is certainly an improvement.”

For Administrators, an additional 2 percent to the base. In total, a 5 percent base increase. The approved salary increases will be effective July 1, 2018, for the 2018-19 school year. In her remarks, President Nancy Case also thanked the PV community members for their continued

SAFETY

HOW SENIORS CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST FRAUD

By Jody Cohen

W

hen it comes to scams, seniors tend to be an easy target because they are more vulnerable and susceptible to fraudulent schemes. Whether it’s fake sweepstakes, implausible investment returns, or the bogus charity scam, the elderly are more vulnerable to certain crimes, especially those living alone. It can occur by mail, phone, in person, or on the internet. Locally, a scammer posing as an elderly woman’s teenaged grandson recently phoned her and claimed he was in a traffic accident involving alcohol. He claimed he was in a holding cell and needed $6,000 for his release. The “grandson” referred her to his “lawyer,” who told this woman that if she called the parents, the incident would go on her grandson’s permanent record. Enroute to the bank, she was in a car accident and delayed by over 30 minutes, so it was too late to get the money. When she called the scammers, they told her to purchase six $1,000 gift

cards at a popular chain store. Fueled by guilt from the scammers and unable to drive because of pain from the accident, she took a cab there, but they’d only let her purchase one card for $950. When neither her bank card nor a check would work, she returned to the cab and relayed the story to the driver, who told her it was a scam. Immediately, she phoned her son and discovered that her grandson was home the entire time. She followed up with a police report. But according to the FBI, seniors aren’t as likely to report a fraud for several reasons: • They are ashamed of being scammed or defrauded. • They are unsure as to whom they report it. • They aren’t even aware they’ve been scammed. Still, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) offers several ways to protect yourself from scams. It’s important to

be an informed consumer and do your research before spending your money. And talk with someone you trust before giving an answer, especially when you feel pressured.

it is important to take action. NCOA suggests you contact your bank and credit card company and cancel the credit/bank cards that could have been used fraudulently. Also, reset your PIN and passwords. You can also call legal services and Adult Protective Services by visiting their website at: https:// eldercare.acl.gov/Public/Index.aspx. Or call them toll-free at 1-800-677-1116 weekdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

Before doing business with a sales person, be sure to get their name and business name, telephone number, street/mailing address. Monitor your bank and credit card statements and credit ratings; check on any unusual or incorrect information. Never give your personal information such as your Social Security and Medicare number, or credit card and banking information over the phone to someone who initiates the contact with you. Register on donotcall.gov to stop unwanted telemarketers.

5 SMART WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR DATA ON SOCIAL MEDIA

T

he Facebook data breach opened a Pandora’s box of concerns for social media consumers. The company estimated that data firm Cambridge Analytica may have had information on about 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge.

In testimony before the U.S. Senate, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to do more to protect the privacy of users’ data. But according to studies by the Pew Research Center, people haven’t had much faith in social media firms’ capacity to do just that. A Pew survey last year found that only 9 percent of social media users were “very confident” that companies would protect their data. About half were “not at all” or “not too confident” their data were in safe hands. With so many people concerned about what private data is shared by social media sites and with whom, the CEO of north32ndnews.com

a social media app says users need to do more to protect their information and be aware of how their data can be used. “In the past 60 days there has been a profound awakening by the average social media user about data privacy and trust regarding social media companies,” says Scott Relf, CEO and co-founder of PikMobile Inc. (www. pikmobile.com), an ad-free social media app that allows users to share content through a unique viewing platform. “All of the other social media companies are equally as guilty as Facebook – Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Google. These companies are betraying their users’ trust by selling them out, and all of this with virtually no regulations or accountability to anyone.” Relf lists five ways social media users can better protect their data:

• Know the people you friend. Don’t accept friend or follow requests from people you don’t know, even if it appears you have friends in common. “They could be fake accounts from cybercriminals, bots or just bad people,” Relf says. “And the more people you’re connected to, the harder it is to control what happens to the information you post.”

a private personal account as well as a more public business one.”

• Use strong passwords and don’t share them. Passwords should be memorable only to the user and kept to themselves. “Likewise, lock your phone with a pin or pattern, so that if you do lose it, whoever finds it doesn’t have easy access to your entire online life,” Relf says.

• Skip the quizzes. Those IQ or personality tests you find on social media may take you to unsecure sites, Relf says, making you vulnerable to identity theft by using information found on your account as well as the answers you provide to the quiz. • Select a private profile for maximum control. “Consider your needs,” Relf says. “If you use social media mainly to keep in touch with friends, you may not need a widely open setting. If you use social media for work purposes, consider two accounts:

• Don’t opt-in to social media facial recognition. “The only logical reason for your social media service to ask for your facial recognition is so that they can do an even better job of harvesting your data and targeting you with ads,” Relf says. “Ideally, social media users should choose what they feed into their mind all day long,” Relf says. “Don’t give up control of your news feed to companies and advertisers that harvest your data for their benefit.”

The new High Street at Desert Ridge location just opened in September and is attracting a ton of interest from the Desert Ridge residents; but it is a complementary location to the 40th and Thunderbird location. “We are mindful of our competition, but we are more focused on helping our members reach their goals and being the best club that we can be. When people see the difference between our gyms and other gyms in the area, they are ultimately drawn to us for the overall experience,” Branden says. Mike McQuarie, a manager at the Thunderbird and 40th Street location, who has been working there for two months, says people prefer Anytime Fitness over big box gyms mainly because of the atmosphere. In addition, with the gym being open 24/7, convenience factor also plays a significant role. Anytime Fitness is not as busy and provides a comfortable environment to exercise, even when you don’t have a lot of time in your schedule, according to McQuarie.

IS THAT ‘JUNK’ IN YOUR ATTIC OR BASEMENT WORTH A FORTUNE?

F

rom baseball cards and sports equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure or just dusty? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is? “The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old. 1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items. In one instance, Crisafulli determined that a family’s baseball bat that spent decades beside their front door to protect from intruders, was actually used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig -and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for them for more than $430,000. He is offering these tips to help

determine if your items are valuable: BASEBALL CARDS Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely pricey. Do they have sharp corners, no creases and retain original gloss? Do they depict star players and Hall of Famers? A Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner or Mickey Mantle will sell for more than non-stars. With particularly old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Unopened packs from almost any era can be valuable. MEMORABILIA & EQUIPMENT Look for old advertising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or sporting goods brands. This doesn’t mean ads torn from magazines, but those used as store displays and for

other purposes. Tin signs are highly collectible from the 1900s into the 1960s, but low-quality reproductions aren’t. Pre-1950s catcher’s masks, baseball gloves and bats can be valuable, especially those endorsed by star players. Condition is important but used equipment can be valuable. When you go to sell sports items, consider a specialty auction, such as Love of the Game, which has the expertise to properly research sports pieces, and maintains lists of bidders specializing in this area so it can get top dollar for these items. More information is available at loveofthegameauctions.com. POSTCARDS Postcards of your vacation destinations likely are worthless. But those depicting famous people, such as movie star cards and vintage baseball postcards, can be valuable. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the

1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs. No matter the type, the older, the better, and the more famous, the better. Old Halloween or Christmas postcards from the early 1900s can be expensive. The same goes for many intricate “hold-to-light” postcards, where portions of scenes light up when held to strong light. TOYS Look for famous characters, such as early Walt Disney items, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. The most prized toys are those in original condition with no broken pieces and paint intact. And if you have original boxes, you might strike gold! So, while you’re cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t rush to purge. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable! R E S I D E N T I A L

REAL ESTATE

RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES COMING TO NORTH 32ND By Allison Barnett

I

n 2014, we arrived from the Bay Area in early January to begin our search for a new home. Knowing very little about the nuances of the Phoenix market, we searched from Desert Ridge to Scottsdale for a home. As we pulled off the 51 onto Shea to look at the last few homes, I saw a sign that said Coffee + Food + Wine. I asked our realtor to pull over. I grabbed my first of many coffees and cookies from 32 Shea. We headed towards the hills to view a property. It was not the property we chose, but we fell in love with the neighborhood as it was quite similar to our neighborhood in Belmont, CA surrounded by amazing open space. We continued our search and ultimately bought our home in North 32nd in April

of 2014. Shortly thereafter, I attended a meeting regarding the project called View 32, which began my involvement in the revitalization of North 32nd.

In the 4 years since I moved to the community, the intersection of 32nd and Shea has completely evolved. When I founded the North 32nd home tour in 2015, I consistently had to explain where North 32nd was situated. Last year that changed when North 32nd was nominated as one of the best neighborhoods in Phoenix in the Phoenix New Times. In the last year, Zipps, Press Coffee, Taphouse Kitchen and Gelato Spot have all announced that they would join our community. In addition, Great Hearts Academy and Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance opened their new spaces just north of Greenway.

Homebuyers are now seeking out North 32nd for the proximity to the best of everything in Phoenix from the access to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve to the ease of commuting on SR-51.

As the momentum of 32nd and Shea is now underway, we will be focusing on the next hub of positive change for the evolution of North 32nd. Cactus, Thunderbird, and Greenway at the intersection of North 32nd present outstanding opportunities for neighbor improved enhancement toward the northern boundary of the community, which is the 101. We are actively seeking new residential and commercial opportunities to support the next phase of growth. View 32 is anticipated to open in the Fall of 2018. 32 North, a single-family development, is starting their final phase soon. The new Artisan Homes project on Cheryl is starting construction now.

Life Storage and the Young Mind Center right near the off-ramp of 32nd Street on SR-51 will also open this fall.

Looking ahead to the fall, we will continue to see new residents join our community both through renting and purchasing homes. Many people continue to come back to the community after time away. North 32nd’s educational anchors, such as PVCC, will continue to have an active role in directing the growth of our community. North 32nd will continue to be the place to be. ASK THE Garage Door EXPERT

GATEWAY GARAGE DOORS AND GATES ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS By Tim Bohart, Owner Gateway Garage Doors & Gates

Q. How safe are garage doors and garage door operators? A. Garage doors and openers have been engineered and manufactured to have systems in place to monitor the condition and take appropriate action when a fault is detected. Most homeowners are familiar with the safety photo eyes located on the bottom left and right side of the door, usually located on the track running along and up the wall. These photo eyes are crucial for preventing injury and entrapment; they do this by creating a constant invisible beam across the opening that will stop the operator’s downward movement if the beam is broken. To test this feature, simply place a large opaque object in the middle of the two opposing sensors and attempt to send the door to the closed position. The opener should recognize this obstacle and refuse to close. If it does not pass this test it will likely not stop and reverse in the case of a person or object being in the doors path while closing. The motor on your garage door opener also has a built-in force monitor. This device is constantly checking the RPM of the motor and will stop movement if it encounters an obstacle that slows down the motor. Most commonly this can be objects such as: brooms, trash cans, vehicles, or even toys left in the opening. The correct way to test this functionality is very simple: simply place a flat 2x4 piece of wood in the center of the opening on the floor, then run the motor into the closed position and when it hits this object it should recognize it and return to the fully open position. If it does not pass this test it will likely also not function correctly in an emergency situation. Garage doors can range anywhere from 100lbs for single car openings, to close to 1000lbs for some larger double car openings, the way this is achieved is through the counter-balance mechanism. The springs are the north32ndnews.com

main component of this system and they provide the rotational force that allows door to become essentially weightless to the point you can lift it with a single finger. If a spring has lost its stored tension, or otherwise is not functioning properly, it can cause your garage door to be in a very unsafe condition. With an improperly functioning garage door spring, you may find that your opener struggles to lift the door, there may be bowing of the rail, large whining noises coming from the motor, or the door can become disconnected from the motor and cause it to slam down with incredible force. A simple test of the condition of the counter balance system is to place the door in manual operation by disconnecting the manual release cord found on your opener. Do this from a closed position then try to lift the garage door. You should notice it takes minimal force to operate, as well as the door should stay in the position you leave it when you let go. If the garage door does not do this, but instead falls to the floor, or rises up on its own, it is highly recommended to call an experienced garage door technician to inspect and adjust your door for proper function. Q. How fast can repairs get completed? A. Like many things in life, garage door and openers do not follow your schedule; they can break down at any point and often without warning signs. Our clients have appreciated our prompt response to any and all of their garage door related needs. owadays, it seems as if every company tries to promote the green agenda. 36 years ago, however, a business model based on recycling and reusing was a decidedly uncommercial idea. That did not stop Judy Rhodes from opening A SECOND LOOK in 1982, the first upscale consignment store of its kind. People had few choices back then:

“

28 boxes of clothes from a rummage sale. Partnering with her late mother, she secured a lease on a modest 800 square-foot storefront and put her new ideas to the test. Like most startups, the going was difficult for the first few years; however, it wasn’t long before legions of consignors and customers dedicated to the ideas she had would soon follow.

”

Last year, consignors earned over a million dollars from their sales at A SECOND LOOK.

throw away perfectly good clothing or donate it to a thrift shop. In an inspired moment, Judy was one of the first in the country to change the shopper’s ideas of just what a consignment could be by asking herself a few simple questions. “What if resale could be more than just what we find at charity thrift stores? What if it actually could be fashionable…like the department stores from where the clothing originated?” Drawing inspiration from discount retailers like Filene’s Basement in Boston, A SECOND LOOK was born by ignoring the status quo. With a mere seven dollars and a passion for her vision of a new kind of resale experience, Judy purchased

The store began to outgrow its surroundings at a rapid pace and moved three times before settling into the present massive 25,600 squarefoot location in 2002. The owners are proud to say that they “were residents of the 32nd Street corridor before it was cool.” In fact, A SECOND LOOK has been located on this same street in North Phoenix since the business very first opened in the early 1980s. They are presently avid supporters of the exciting and long-overdue North 32 revitalization efforts underway in the area. A SECOND LOOK is now one of the world’s largest clothing and housewares consignment stores. The 45-employee team at 32nd Street and

Shea serves an astounding 40,000 consignors and process for sale over 20,000 individual and often one-of-a-kind items per week. Besides resale, it also receives brand new closeout items and merchandise from several designer boutiques located throughout the country, that prefer consigning as opposed to liquidating through other channels. Consignors have always flocked to the business and many use it as a way to supplement income. Last year, consignors earned over a million dollars from their sales at A SECOND LOOK. From the very beginning, A SECOND LOOK was a true family business. Besides founding the business with her mother, Judy enlisted her sister, Jeri Watson. Jeri soon joined the company and became a partner almost 25 years ago. In 2014, Judy’s son Trey became a partner, also, after working at the store for some 16 years.

bedding, and household items have not only been distributed to the local homeless population, women’s crisis shelters, and recent domestic hurricane victims but to those as far away as Haiti, Africa, the Philippines, Central America, and South America. While most resale shops specialize in one or two limited product areas, A SECOND LOOK is a true consignment department store that has fulfilled the founder’s original vision. Inside, a shopper is as likely to find designer clothing (for both men and women) as well as decorator housewares items. The full range of merchandise is mid-boggling and can be a bit daunting for the uninitiated. Where else will you find clothing, shoes, hats, cosmetics, art, china, silverware, antiques, furs, gowns, watches, jewelry, shoes, handbags, pet supplies, books, games, bedding, electronics, sports equipment, luggage, collectible items (and even more) under one roof?

Although proud of their business accomplishments over the last one-third century, the owners are definitely even more proud of the way that the store helps people in need. From the very beginning, it was A SECOND LOOK’s mission to continuously give back to the community. Judy, Jeri, and Trey have collaborated with several different charities to donate clothing throughout the United States and abroad. Through their partnerships, A SECOND LOOK and its consignors have actively helped many thousands in crisis. Donations of clothing,

Besides the vast selection, perhaps the most fun part of shopping at A SECOND LOOK is the unique pricing and it appears to be what keeps customers coming back daily. While the as-new resale items begin at 40% of their original retail, the eventual price depends upon how long it has been available for sale. After thirty days, the price is automatically reduced by 25%. After 45 days, the price is reduced by 50%. Finally, after 60 days, the price is reduced by 75%! A’S, B’S AND O’S ARE MISSING A

RED CROSS CAMPAIGN CALLS FOR NEW BLOOD DONORS TO FILL THE MISSING TYPES s part of an international movement, the American Red Cross is launching the Missing Types campaign today to recruit new blood donors – and those who have not given recently – to ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients. During the Missing Types campaign, the letters A, B and O – the main blood groups – will disappear from brands, social media pages, signs and websites to illustrate the critical role every blood donor plays. When the letters A, B and O vanish from everyday life, the gaps are striking. And when A, B and O blood types are missing from hospital shelves, patient care could be impacted. “Unfortunately, blood shortages still happen, and the number of new Red Cross blood donors is shrinking each year,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice

president, Red Cross Blood Services. “That’s why the Red Cross is asking those who have never donated blood and those who haven’t given in a while to make a lifesaving donation. You are the missing type patients need.” Don’t wait until the letters A, B and O go missing from hospital shelves. Join the #MissingType movement today – make an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/MissingTypes, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). SURVEY REVEALS PUBLIC MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BLOOD NEEDS AND DONATION A recent survey, conducted on behalf of the Red Cross, revealed a troubling disconnect between the public’s perception of blood donations and the realities of patient transfusion needs.

• Three-quarters (74 percent) of the public underestimate how frequently blood transfusions occur.* Most people perceive blood is needed in the U.S. every 15 minutes or even every hour or two hours when in fact, every two seconds, someone in this country needs blood. • Nearly half of the public (45 percent) know someone who has been helped by a blood transfusion.* Yet only three percent of the U.S. population donates each year.

Each day, blood and platelets are needed for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those like Lily who are receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.

• More than one-third (35 percent) of the public has never considered that blood may not be available when they or a loved one need it.* Blood shortages are not uncommon in the United States and can only be prevented when more people roll up a sleeve to give.

NEW DONORS NEEDED Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. But for the past four years, new Red Cross donors have declined by about 80,000 each year. This is not just a Red Cross trend, but a challenge blood collection organizations face across the country and around the world. Donating blood is a simple process and only takes about an hour start to finish.

• More than half (53 percent) of the public believe they need to know their blood type to donate.* Good news – Potential blood donors do not need to know their blood type before giving blood. After individuals give blood, the Red Cross provides each donor their blood type. By joining the #MissingType movement, donors can find out their blood type this summer. MISSING LETTERS CAN LEAD TO DELAYS IN TREATMENT Lily Dotson and her family know how serious blood shortages can be for patients. During Lily’s 2 1/2 years of treatment for high-risk leukemia, her family was told twice that the hospital didn’t have the blood or platelets she needed and that she would have to wait for transfusions. It was incredibly frustrating and eye-opening for Lily’s mom, Susie Dotson. “People automatically think blood is there. They don’t realize we’re relying on their blood donation,” said Dotson. “Lily needed blood products just as much as the chemo or the treatment.” Lily, now 11, has been cancer-free for four years and is preparing to enter middle school this year.

Registration: Sign in, show ID and read required information. Health check: Answer questions and receive a mini-physical. Donation: Giving a pint of blood only takes eight to 10 minutes. Refreshments: Donors enjoy snacks and relax before resuming their day. HOW TO DONATE BLOOD All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process. RapidPass lets donors complete the predonation reading and answer the health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass from the convenience of a mobile device or computer, or through the Blood Donor App. north32ndnews.com

‘TEXT NECK’ MEANS TROUBLE FOR THOSE ADDICTED TO MOBILE DEVICES

Living without Gluten or Grains? Have Food Allergies?

W

ell before the invention of cell phones, medical experts agreed that poor posture is the leading cause of back and neck pain. But the explosion of 24-7 cell phone use has seriously compounded this problem - and even given rise to a new medical condition: ‘Text Neck.”

WE CAN HELP!

“Text neck” is the nickname for all the back, neck and spinal issues affecting those who spend too much time on their cell phones and mobile devices. It is due to the constant hunching over people do to peer into their mobile screens, which malforms the spine. Physicians are reporting children as young as eight years old are affected.

Collectively, Americans check their smartphones over 8 billion times per day. And young adults age 18 to 24 send or receive an average of 109.5 text messages on a typical day. “Just look at any crowd of young people, chances are most are exhibiting very poor posture from tilting their head down to read their device. This forces their neck and back muscles to work at awkward angles - just to keep the body upright, and pain and strain is often the result,” says Robert Gearhart, an operating room nurse and co-inventor of Body Aline (www.bodyaline.com), an exercise machine designed to strengthen the back and realign the spine. “Cell phones aren’t going anywhere, so it looks like text neck will become a health problem of epidemic proportion in the years ahead,” Gearhart said. “If the trend continues, it looks like in 20 years the number of people who will have spine issues due to this will be astronomical.” He says the best way to check your mobile device is to stand up straight and look at your device at eye level instead of reading it next to your torso, which usually results in your chin going down towards your chest. Or lie on your stomach when spending long periods of time on your phone. This provides a safe and natural passive isometric exercise to restore the natural curve to the neck. Of course, it is not just mobile devices that can give a person back problems – there are many causes and some, such as arthritis, have no easy north32ndnews.com

www.gfcbakery.com answers. However, Gearhart says frequently the cause of back pain can be something that can be adjusted with proper lifestyle choices, such as: • Take breaks from desk jobs. When working at a computer, take a short break every 15 or 20 minutes, then move around and change your body and head positions. • Adjust your workspace. Set your computer monitor at eye level. Raise your smartphone to eye level rather than lowering your head. Get a tablet holder to elevate your device close to eye level. If possible, get a standing desk or an ergonomic chair. Don’t slouch at your desk. • Use voice-to-text as often as possible. This cuts down on the amount you are looking down at your phone. • Hold your phone at eye level. Do not look down and allow your chin to move towards your chest when you are on your mobile device. This causes the back of the neck to support the head instead of the shoulders. “Taking some preventative measures,” Gearhart says, “is much easier than trying to treat a spine that is already out of alignment.”

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS Reviewed by A.D. Beal HEREDITARY A tragedy tears a family apart as Annie (Toni Collette) realizes how much her mother had an effect on her kids. This needs to be said: Hereditary is not an easy watch, and if you’re going in expecting a regular horror experience, you’re going to be shocked, disturbed and sad at the same time… which is why I recommend it. Ari Aster’s debut feature frightens you in several ways, both in the scares that this film presents (which includes scenes reminiscent of The Exorcist) and the family drama going on, sometimes both happening at the same time. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff are the standouts in this film, both expressing grief and anger in different but excellent ways (not to say that Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne don’t also do well in this). Again, this is a film that is not for everyone, but those who appreciate high concept horror will likely love this. Be warned though: you may want to watch something much ‘happier’ to reset your brain after seeing this. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY After abandoning the Empire, Han Solo participates in a job to steal hyperfuel for a massive gangster. Solo’s broken production could have led to a really bad film (to put it mildly), but the final film actually turned out well. Alden Ehrenreich deserves a lot of credit for his portrayal of Han, showing him at a point where he’s less hardened but still smart. He manages to capture the feel of Ford’s performance without just imitating him. The rest of the cast ranges from great (Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover) to good despite not much material to work with (Emilia Clarke, Paul Bettany), to wasted (Thandie Newton, Ian Kenny). It’s a very action heavy film, quickly going from set piece to set piece. Each is exciting and are shot/edited well to give a nice flow of adrenaline. Perhaps the biggest flaw of this film is that it feels safe, not really trying any24 • July 2018 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

thing different, or adding much to the Star Wars universe like the last three films have done. UPGRADE A man has a chip installed into his body that gives him the ability to move and fight after being paralyzed in an attack that killed his wife. Logan Marshall-Green deserves much more praise as an actor, as his roles in works such as The Invitation, Quarry and now Upgrade show his expansive range. In what would be a normally generic role, he adds personality to the lead role Grey with both his dark humor and chemistry with the AI Stem. Yes, even the AI in the film has a personality, leading to some humorous moments between the two. It’s also worth giving this film praise for its fluent action scenes and nice visuals given the low budget compared to other action films (and of course some nice brutal gore as well). If it weren’t for the thin story and forgettable supporting cast, this could have been a great underground cult film. HOTEL ARTEMIS A hotel in Los Angeles that houses criminals with injuries is under siege by a notable crime kingpin during a citywide riot. Hotel Artemis has all the elements of a great film: a mid-budget film with an original idea and an all-star cast, that should mean we got something great. And there are glimpses of that in the film, with some stellar performances (notably Sterling K. Brown, Dave Bautista and Jeff Goldblum) and the cinematography by Chung-hoon Chung. But it seems like there was just so much more that could be done with this film beyond the basic plot. We don’t get a good indication on how important the hotel is or how LA has gotten to this point, which leaves the viewer wishing for more background. There are also flashbacks involved in this film, which are presented sloppily, to put it simply. It feels like a short film that was extended into a feature, which is an absolute shame because there was so much potential for greatness. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
