CITY OF PHOENIX PLANS FOR FEDERAL COVID-19 RELIEF SPENDING

THE CITY OF PHOENIX RECEIVED $293 MILLION FROM THE CORONAVIRUS RELIEF FUND, WHICH IS PART OF THE $2.1 TRILLION CARES ACT PASSED BY CONGRESS. The city can only use the funds for expenses directly related to COVID-19 and the funds must be spent before the end of the calendar year or it must be returned to the federal government.

COVID-19 impacts are likely to be felt for some time so the council voted to take about half of the allocated relief funds to hold for potential future expenses through the year. In early May, the City Council adopted the Phoenix Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) Strategic Plan; providing clear guidance to staff on the city’s use of CRF funds.

The council broke the funds into three major categories: Community Investment, $75 million; City Expenses, $75 million; and Reserve to Preserve City Services, $143 million.

The list below includes the council’s addition for small business assistance, individual utility and rent/mortgage assistance, as well as refugee assistance and domestic violence in the vulnerable population category.

ADDITIONAL FUNDING WILL HELP TARGET

STREET RACING ON VALLEY FREEWAYS ON APRIL 3, 2020, AZDPS TROOPERS OBSERVED TWO DRIVERS ATTEMPTING TO RACE AT SPEEDS NEAR 90 MPH ON I-17 SOUTHBOUND NEAR INDIAN SCHOOL ROAD. Both drivers were stopped and taken into custody, and the vehicles were towed.

Unfortunately, racing incidents like this one are an ongoing issue on Valley streets and freeways. Now, with the help of a $30,000 funding increase from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), Arizona state troopers can boost street racing enforcement on highways in the metro Phoenix area.

The new funding is an add-on to the $244,280 grant awarded to AZDPS in December 2019 for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program & Materials (STEP). This increase will provide the Highway Patrol Division with more personnel for special enforcement details targeting street racing.

Street racing on highways is dangerous for everyone on the road, including both racers and the motoring public. The high speeds often associated with racing increase the risk of serious injury or death in a collision. As you may recall, on February 18, 2020, an

18-year-old Buckeye man was killed on State Route 51 as a result of a suspected street racing incident.

The two cars were racing when one car reportedly flipped over and collided with a median wall near the Shea Boulevard overpass. While the case remains under investigation, the hope is that with this additional enforcement, we can minimize the chance of these tragedies occurring. north32ndnews.com

DESIGNATION FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR EAGLE RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, EXPLORER MIDDLE SCHOOL, GREENWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND VISTA VERDE MIDDLE SCHOOL HAVE RECEIVED THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE® NO PLACE FOR HATE® DESIGNATION FOR CREATING SAFE AND RESPECTFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BRINGING AWARENESS TO ISSUES OF BULLYING AND BIAS THROUGHOUT THE 20192020 SCHOOL YEAR. Each school has taken its own approach to implement and instill the values of the No Place for Hate motto in students and staff members.

Greenway Middle School No Place for Hate has become a strong aspect of Greenway Middle School. Every year, students, as a whole school, are taught about the organization and its purpose. “We begin every single morning with a No Place for Hate quote, as well as encourage No Place for Hate T-Shirts to be worn every Tuesday. Our committee has formed two separate sub-committees with the students, seventh and eighth grade, who meet twice a month and plan activities, random acts of kindness, as well as events for the students campus-wide. We have worked together to create a unity quilt, suicide-awareness posters, along with other signs around the school.

We use this motto as a code to check interactions that are considered or

For eight years, No Place for Hate ADL has designated Greenway Middle School as a No Place for Hate School.

Greenway prides itself on the hard work the students do every year to encourage love, tolerance, and friendships. With this program, staff members are able to teach them and show them how tolerance makes the world go round and, without it, we would fall apart.

Vista Verde Middle School The Vista Verde Middle School community took the Resolution of Respect, which is: “I pledge from this day forward to do my best to combat prejudice and to stop those who, because of

hate or ignorance, would hurt anyone or violate their civil rights. I will try at all times to be aware of my own biases and seek to gain understanding of those who I perceive as being different from myself. I will speak out against all forms of prejudice and discrimination. I will reach out to support those who are targets of hate. I will think about specific ways my community members can promote respect for people and create a prejudice-free zone. I firmly believe that one person can make a difference and that no person can be an innocent bystander when it comes to opposing hate. I recognize that respecting individual dignity, achieving equality, and promoting inter-group harmony are the responsibilities of all people. By signing this pledge, I commit myself to create a community that is No Place for Hate®.”

“My favorite activities were creating an environment for respect and unity at Vista Verde and the classroom Be an Ally Poster Contest for students to share what being an ally meant and our community art mural project that brought our community together to build relationships and collaborate,” says Vista Verde Principal Paul Ferrero.

LOCAL NURSE RECEIVES MAJOR NURSING AWARD FROM PHOENIX CHILDREN’S

“WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?” Even as a little girl, North 32nd resident Melissa Reichenbach knew the answer to that question. There’s a photo tucked away on her bookshelf of career day at kindergarten: 5-year-old Melissa is dressed up as a nurse.

“My mom has been a cardiovascular intensive care nurse for nearly 40 years,” she says. “I wanted to be just like her.”

To say she’s fulfilled a lifelong dream is an understatement. The 37-year-old earned her bachelor’s in nursing from Purdue University, her master’s in nursing from Arizona State University, and other credentials including primary care pediatric nurse

practitioner (PCP-C) and certified rehabilitation registered nurse (CRRN) certifications.

But she didn’t just grow up to become a nurse – she became a health care professional whose commitment, passion and excellence were honored recently during Phoenix Children’s 16th annual Nursing Excellence Awards. Given the health system’s staff of more than 1,600 nurses, this acknowledgment is no small feat. “I was absolutely shocked when I received the award,” Reichenbach says.

Reichenbach is the nursing educator for Phoenix Children’s Inpatient Rehabilitation unit and the hospital’s East Tower, where children with gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine conditions, and infectious illnesses receive care. In her role, she is responsible for training up new graduates, helping veteran nurses learn new techniques, and ensuring her team of 170 nurses, technicians and health unit coordinators keep their skills sharp.

Her colleagues and supervisors report she is masterful as a nurse and as an educator. Her approach to teaching is engaging and motivating – not to mention patient and kind.

“There’s nothing like helping new nurses move from uncertainty in their role to confidence in caring for patients and families,” she says. “I also love watching my experienced staff show compassion and skill in their work with patient families and in supporting one another.”

A mother to two young children, she started working the night shift when COVID-19 hit. This has allowed her to continue working as a nurse while she and her husband, Jason, tag-team caring for their children, whose schools have been shuttered amid the pandemic. She says it has been a blessing, both personally and professionally.

“We have such amazing leadership here at Phoenix Children’s,” she says. “In addition to helping me juggle my life as a nurse and a mom, they saw value in having a dedicated nurse at the hospital every night to answer all COVID-19 questions. One of my responsibilities is to stay current on all of our policies and procedures, like visitor restrictions and the use of personal protective equipment.”

Her Nursing Excellence Award is just one of two honors she received. She also was named the Education team’s “Nurse of the Year.”

Phoenix Children’s hosts its Nursing Excellence Awards during National Nurses Week each year. It’s an opportunity to spotlight four nurses who have gone above and beyond. The health system awarded Reichenbach the Education Award. Francine Hoekstra, RN, CDE, of Glendale won the Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Award; Gretchen Schwindt, MSN, RN, CPN, of Scottsdale was named Transformational Leader; and Phoenix’s Casey Kinney, BSN, RN, CPN, was awarded Staff Nurse of the Year.

TIPS FOR POSITIVE FAMILY COMMUNICATION DURING COVID-19

F

amilies are facing some very difficult conversations now that Arizona has re-opened. A range of strong opinions about social distancing and safety precautions may cause family conflict if communication breakdowns and negative emotional reactions go unchecked.

Even some spouses are split over best practices during the pandemic. Enter extended families into the equation and the range of opinions can quickly become a heated blame game. Some family members would rather not have any conversation at this point. Some are consumed with fear and anxiety. Some are focused on the science and support adhering to CDC guidelines and social distancing protocols. Others question the level of risk or prefer to return to normal, even acknowledging the potential for negative health outcomes within our community.

Family conflict is nothing new and can be overcome when family members are committed to healthy communication with the help of some mutually agreed upon guidelines for conversations. You could propose your own version of the following suggested communication guidelines to ensure less conflict and better family discussions:

• We will be respectful of one another and respect all opinions as valid.

• We will make proposals about how to connect as a family instead of making demands. Family members prefer to be “asked” if they are willing to do something compared to be “told” what they should do.

• We will be open to compromising whenever we can all “live with” a solution that isn’t perfect but works for everyone.

• We will avoid interrupting as best we can and ensure that each person’s voice is heard.

• We will listen carefully to understand how each person sees the situation so we can “see the world through his or her eyes.”

• We will stay positive and be gentle with each other, rather than placing blame or becoming judgmental.

• We will acknowledge that we all love one another and want to be close again.

The pandemic is temporary, but our family is forever.

• We accept that we won’t all agree 100% of the time. If we disagree, we respect each person’s right to make his or her own decisions.

Once you all agree on guidelines, schedule a family talk. Start with a fun activity to celebrate being together, maybe a virtual dance challenge, silliest joke exchange, or perhaps a rousing chorus of “We are Family.”

When you begin, be prepared for a difficult conversation. There may be feelings of frustration. Remember, no one

WHIPLASH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS Contributed by Dr. Beau Horner

T

he most common causes of neck pain are from muscle strains or soft tissue sprains. Yet another common cause of neck pain that doesn’t always immediately show symptoms is whiplash. Whiplash, also called acceleration-deceleration injury, is most commonly caused from motor vehicle accidents. But any kind of trauma to the neck can show signs and symptoms of whiplash.

Some studies have shown that 50% of neck injuries from a motor vehicle crash will continue to show symptoms for up to a year after the crash. The evidence suggests that neck injuries in a motor vehicle crash more than doubles the risk for developing future chronic neck pain. As a result, chronic neck pain can limit physical activity and impact health and quality of life.

When a patient comes in for an initial

visit with neck pain that may be related to a whiplash injury, the following steps are taken: 1. Comprehensive patient history 2. Physical examination 3. Diagnostic imaging

If symptoms are mild to moderate, some self-care options are: rest, a combination of ice and heat, and over-thecounter pain relievers like Advil and Aleve. However, when the whiplash symptoms are severe or becoming more frequent, medical care is recommended.

These combinations of treatments can include chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, injections, and prescription pain medications. In addition, treatments such as postural correction exercises, neck stretches, an ergonomic pillow, and posture blocks can help neck pain.

Stuck at Home Summertime Blues

re you at your wit’s end trying to come up with ideas to entertain your kids at home while you try to get work done? After spending two months in quarantine, the thought of trying to plan even more fun activities for summer break can seem daunting. We brainstormed some ideas that may help fill in a few gaps when you run out of ideas and boredom reaches its boiling point.

WATER FUN As always, the Valley of the Sun is hot. What better way to keep your kids occupied than fun with water? A swimming pool is ideal, and a trip to the local water park or nearby lake is always a great time. If you don’t have a pool and the larger public water venues are closed, crowded or too expensive, consider a few wet and wild alternatives: • Water balloons • Sprinklers • Water hose attachments • Kiddie pools • Super Soakers and water guns • Sprinklers and hoses on the trampoline • Slip and slides CRAFTS AND KITS Some of the most tried and true activ-

ities to keep your kids busy are crafts.

Whether your youngster likes to paint, glue, build, glitter, or sew, there are homemade ideas and store-bought craft kits for every taste and budget.

If you are crafty, look for great ideas on Pinterest or other websites.

Need a little more help? Many craft stores and onsite crafting shops are now packaging materials and instructions from their regular craft classes so you can pick them up and bring them home. Several pottery painting stores are also letting you “take and bake” your own pottery – pick it up from their store, paint it, then bring it back to be fired.

SLIME! An informal poll of a random group of fourth graders in Ms. H’s class (at a school that will not be named) clearly indicated an overwhelming love of slime by the majority of 10-year-olds. They love the messy, sticky, squishy stuff and have a great time creating it.You can buy premade slime kits at the store, but if you really want to have fun and save money, here is a recipe for the homemade kind.

Recipe Per Batch • 2/3 cup of white glue (Elmer’s brand is best for this recipe, but feel free to try others)

• 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda • 1/4 cup of water • 2-3 cups of shaving cream (not gel) • Food coloring • 1 1/2 tablespoons of contact lens solution (Renu or Equate brands are recommended, but whatever you use, the solution must include boric acid and sodium borate.)

Put the glue in a bowl. Add water and baking soda, then stir. Add shaving cream and mix it all together. Next add food coloring to get the color of slime you want. Last, slowly add about a tablespoon of the contact solution to start the slime process.

Knead all of the ingredients together.

It will be very sticky at first (this is normal). After about five minutes of kneading, add the rest of the contact solution little by little to reduce the overall stickiness of the slime.

Remember, creating slime is essentially conducting a science experiment, mixing chemicals and colors to get a fun reaction. Be sure to wash your hands after handling the slime, protect your work surfaces, and know that too much handling can cause some irritation to your skin because of the chemicals in the contact solution. And don’t eat it (we don’t recommend this as an activity for kids under 4)!

recent study of children in the third to fifth grades showed that students lost an average of 20 percent of their school year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school year gains in math during summer break, according to Scholastic. com. With this school year already disrupted due to COVID-19, experts note that now, more than ever before, it’s crucial to encourage students of all ages to read during the summer.

One local resource for busy families is the Read On Arizona website at readonarizona.org. On the website, you can use the “Find a Book” tool to find books that meet your child’s interest and reading level; use a reading log to track time spent reading; and find other helpful educational resources.

Another resource for families includes Read Across America’s Kids Summer Reading List website at readacrossamerica.org/kids-summerreading-list. Here, families can find an array of reading resources, book recommendations, and parenting tips. Some ideas include joining the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, where you receive digital rewards, or the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, where

young readers can earn a free book after reading eight books.

What can parents do to help reverse the “Summer Slide” (when children lose their reading and math skills over the summer)? Scholastic.com recommends that parents allow children to read the books they’re most interested in; make time for “smart play,” such as games and puzzles; allow kids to use their imagination through imaginative play such as LEGOs, etc.; and join a summer reading program at your local library.

“The Summer Reading Game is the cornerstone of public library programs. This year we have transitioned the experience to an online format featuring the game, prizes and programs,” says city librarian Rita Hamilton.

Beginning this month, Phoenix Public Library’s summer reading program allows readers of all ages to fall in love with reading and make reading a habit, she adds.

Register for the Summer Reading Game at phoenixpublic.org. Phoenix residents can also go to read20az.com and participate, the goal being building the habit of reading 20 minutes a day. Even more fun? Make it a family activity as kids, teens and adults can all participate.

uring the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, instead of just closing up shop and waiting for the goahead to open up again, the team at The Covenant decided to switch gears and transition to a new restaurant concept: PV Pie & Wine.

“We knew we wanted to adapt with the needs of the community,” says owner Carrie Lane about the transition. “We didn’t have a walk-up service for easy take-out orders. While we loved the concept of The Covenant and are proud of all that we accomplished with that restaurant, we listened to what our customers were telling us. Feedback indicated the desire for a casual dining experience that would provide a more family-friendly environment.

The downtime afforded by the shutdown allowed us to make these modifications. You will notice that much of the decor is the same or similar with pops of a new more casual layout for a more relaxed visit.”

So what will be different for those who are used to The Covenant?

“The big yellow door will remain and we are actually keeping some of the favorite Covenant dishes while adding roman style pizzas, some flavorful pasta dishes, and tried and true sandwiches,” Lane shares. “We have brought on a new chef, James Moran, to guide these new dishes while preserving those fan favorites from the old place. We will have some of our signature appetizers including the unique and beautiful hummus board along with our fan favorite ceviche.

You will also see some of the favorite entrees including the cedar plank salmon and the short rib ravioli. However, in this changing time, we want to expand our menu for ease of take out and relax the menu a bit for the everyday pick up or dine in experience.”

She adds that the decor is also a little different. “We have put a bigger focus on our wine room, with its two spiral staircases and ample room; we will fill it with an eclectic and affordable wine selection. We will also have some bottle choices for those looking for something a bit bigger. The bar is a bit smaller, but the energy will be even better.”

Some other changes include the fact that PV Pie & Wine will have more seating than The Covenant did. Guests can expect a more relaxed setting with a changed color palate and new furniture, with the focus on guest comfort. “Whereas The Covenant seemed more appropriate for a special occasion, PV Pie & Wine will feel more like your favorite everyday spot,” Lane says.

“We will be blending the best dishes of The Covenant while taking the direct input from our customers over the last two plus years,” she continues.

“Aside from our great location, we’ve put a good amount of attention behind setting up our dining space to enhance the way that people interact socially.

We have a large screen playing classic movies, which is something that we believe provides a sense of nostalgia and commonality. While we intend to make pizza our main north32ndnews.com

focus, we won’t be just a pizzeria.

We’ll be able to offer something for everyone, including our popular classic cocktails, our handmade house cocktails, wine and local craft beers.”

When it comes to concerns regarding the novel coronavirus, Lane shares that PV Pie & Wine is taking all necessary precautions.

“We will strictly adhere to all CDC guidelines, we will have hand washing logs, and hand sanitizer stations for guests and our team,” she says. “We will change and adapt to the current times. The guests’ safety and that of our team are a top priority. We will try our best in this challenging environment; some may think we are going overboard and others may think we have not done enough. Our goal is to be consistent and follow minute by minute, daily, and weekly sanitation protocols to insure the best possible experience while keeping safety as the priority.”

Family owned and operated, PV Pie & Wine does a lot for the community through food donation and sponsoring events. They often work in tandem with their sister restaurant, O.H.S.O Brewery.

Some of the dishes Lane says that customers will love are PV Pie & Wine’s Roman style pizzas, available with a variety of toppings, cedar plank salmon, ceviche, and an updated chopped salad that “is out of this world.” On Mondays and Tuesdays, there is a $35 pizza and bottle of wine special.

“We are open for one and all. We will have a big to-go focus and online ordering for those in a hurry or not wanting to get out of their car. You will be able to pull up and get curbside to your car,” Lane says. “We also want to let people know the wines, food and vibe will be a bit more approachable with a greater emphasis on fun, family and a relaxed experience.”

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR OLD TRUST?

I

review many trusts, and some of them are quite old. After these old trusts were put in place, a lot of things have changed. For example, the federal estate tax exemption increased substantially in 2012, a new Arizona Trust Code was put in place in 2009, and most recently a new law affects those inheriting IRAs. Then, of course, the situation of the people who are included in the trust have often changed completely.

When so much has changed, it’s clearly time to update the trust.

When we do an update, we usually do a complete amendment – called a restatement – of the trust. We keep the original trust name and date, and just note that it was restated as of the date we sign the new documents. That way, anything already titled to or transferred to the trust is still in the trust – we have no need to change the title on homes or bank accounts again.

Older trusts for a couple may require the surviving spouse to split the trust into two trusts on the death of the first spouse. This was standard estate tax planning

before the increase in the federal tax exemption. It is unnecessarily complicated and most married couples don’t need this type of plan anymore. An update can simplify the estate plan for the surviving spouse.

Some of the plans I review still have guardians listed – but the children are now in their thirties with their own children. The trustees or executors may also no longer be the best choice, or even still alive.

The change in the Arizona Trust Code also gives us some easy ways to leave money in trust for our children. The advantage of the trust you leave for your children is protection of the trust money and assets in the event of divorce, and asset protection from creditors.

Leaving your children their inheritance in trust may protect the inheritance at their death as well. Let’s say your daughter inherits from you and puts everything in joint accounts. On her death, her husband will receive all of the inheritance because it is now joint property. And then, what if he remarries and doesn’t put a plan in place for those assets to go to your grandchildren? The assets may go to the new wife,

and when she dies, to her children. With a trust, you can make sure it goes where you want it to – you can even benefit your daughter’s husband during his life if you daughter dies first, but be sure that ultimately your grandchildren receive the inheritance when their parents are both gone.

he real estate industry is facing one of the biggest challenge it has faced in over 13 years: determining what impact the current pandemic will or may have on property values.

If you are a buyer, you may be hoping for major price reductions because the health crisis is straining the economy. If you are a seller, you may be hoping that the real estate market and the industry in general does not skip a beat and continues strongly into 2021.

Economics 101: supply and demand.

The price of housing will be determined by supply and demand. Fortunately for us, in Arizona the supply is still very low, and demand continues to grow.

Our Arizona residential real estate market’s strength is measured by supply of inventory. In a normal market we would have six to seven months of inventory.

Inventory of over seven months is considered a buyer’s market, and a buyer’s market generally means downward pressure on prices. The opposite is true for inventory with under six months.

That would indicate a seller’s market, and a seller’s market would put upward pressure on prices.

In 2019 and into 2020, housing inventory has hovered at about three months worth. Based on these numbers it has been a strong seller’s market for almost two years. Even though buyer demand has decreased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of homes on the market have decreased as well. In the recently released Existing Home Sales Report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), it was revealed that we currently have 3.4 months of inventory. This means home values should maintain or increase, even during the pandemic.

Here is what some experts are saying: Ivy Zelman of Zelman Associates: “Supported by our analysis of home price dynamics through cycles and north32ndnews.com

other periods of economic and housing disruption, we expect home price appreciation to decelerate from current levels in 2020, though easily remain in positive territory year over year given the beneficial factors of record-low inventories and a historically-low interest rate environment.”

Freddie Mac: “The fiscal stimulus provided by the CARES Act will mute the impact that the economic shock has on house prices. Additionally, forbearance and foreclosure mitigation programs will limit the fire sale contagion effect on house prices. We forecast house prices to fall 0.5 percentage points over the next four quarters. Two forces prevent a collapse in house prices. First, as we indicated in our earlier research report, U.S. housing markets face a large supply deficit. Second, population growth and pent up household formations provide a tailwind to housing demand. Price growth accelerates back towards a long-run trend of between 2 and 3% per year.”

Mark Fleming: “The housing supply remains at historically low levels, so house price growth is likely to slow, but it’s unlikely to go negative.”

The bottom line: our economy has been placed on hold, but it appears home prices will remain steady throughout the pandemic.

Visiting THE MO G OLLON RIM

L

ooking for some less frequented spots in Arizona where you can see stunning views and tall pine forests? Head north of Fountain Hills on State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, and take a road trip to Rim Country. The inspiration of early 20th century Western author Zane Grey, and the site of the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona, the Mogollon Rim area offers stunning views of ponderosa pines from overlooks as high as 2,000 feet. Running along Highway 260 from Sedona to Payson to Pinetop-Lakeside and eventually to the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, some of our favorite areas in Rim Country are just a short drive from the Valley.

The Mogollon Rim is a fantastic location for hiking, sightseeing, and horseback riding, as well as a great getaway for boating and fishing, camping, hunting, and backcountry skiing in the winter. Tiny towns settled along the Rim offer a fascinating slice of Arizona history with museums, ruins, natural wonders, and points of interest all along the route. Certain areas off the main road are rugged, and often steep, so prepare to take a high-clearance vehicle if you want to venture farther off the beaten path.

Here are our favorite spots to stop when we head north to Rim Country:

PAYSON As you head for Payson and the Mogollon Rim on the Beeline Highway, you will pass through some of the most gorgeous pristine desert and mountain vistas in Arizona. At an elevation of about 5,000 feet, the town of Payson offers a mild, four season climate in the tall pines. This small town of about 15,000 was founded in 1882 and is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest and the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation. Payson is an excellent location for year-round outdoor activities including hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, camping, rock hounding, and horseback riding.

The town’s centrally located Green Valley Park has three stocked fishing lakes and free outdoor concerts in the summer. Dubbed “The Gateway to Rim Country,” Payson is steeped in Arizona history and hosts the world’s oldest continuous rodeo.

PINE Heading northwest out of Payson on Highway 260, you’ll arrive at the tiny community of Pine. With a population of around 2,000, Pine is the gateway to the Tonto Natural Bridge, nestled in the valley of Pine Creek, which flows under the bridge to the East Verde River. Originally settled by a group of four families, Pine is full of fascinating history and boasts some great attractions such as the post office established in 1884 and the Pine-Strawberry Museum.

Pine is a great destination for hiking, camping, and fishing, with Bear Canyon Lake and Knoll Lake nearby. There are also several good restaurants, charming local shops and antique stores, and a gas station to fill up before you head down the road. This is the last gas stop before Camp Verde if you’re heading west on 260, so make sure your tank is full.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK The Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located in Pine on the Mogollon Rim. A steeply graded, but paved, road takes you down to the Visitor’s Center and unassuming parking lot that sits just above a tremendous spectacle of nature. Don’t be fooled by the peaceful, idyllic, tree-lined meadow and picnic tables, because as you move toward the edge of the picnic area, you see a giant drop into the stream below. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a natural spring-fed stream that flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

STRAWBERRY Strawberry is a beautiful and picturesque spot to stop and rest as you travel along the Mogollon Rim. This tiny unincorporated town has a population of around 1,000, but it has natural charm in abundance. Always one of our favorite places to stop for a big breakfast after a hike through the woods or an early morning visit to the Tonto Natural Bridge, Strawberry is a great place for hiking, camping, cabins, and Arizona territorial days history. One must-see site in town is the Strawberry Schoolhouse, the oldest schoolhouse still standing in the state of Arizona.

The mild climate and seasonal changes along the higher elevations of the Mogollon Rim make it a great destination to visit all year round.

ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEKS: DINE IN OR TAKE OUT

W

hen COVID-19 threatened the very core of the food and beverage industry with closures in mid-March, restaurant owners responded in turn — showing their strength by quickly adapting their business models to offer take-out, curbside and delivery options, and the widely embraced cocktails to go. The local community showed up, too, in support of these very restaurants that make up the Valley’s dynamic culinary scene.

With the mandates, however, one of the most beloved culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, was placed on hold while Arizona Takeout Weeks stepped in to encourage continued dining support.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Restaurant Association created Arizona Restaurant Strong, a relief fund to provide funding for restaurant workers that found themselves immediately out of work due to closures surrounding the virus.

Now, the Arizona Restaurant Association is pleased to announce that

Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out (ARW) will take place from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 28 and Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27.

“We are so grateful for the support of our local dining community in the weeks that followed restaurant closures in March,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “The quick creation of Arizona Takeout Weeks and Arizona Restaurant Strong efforts could not have been possible without them. As Arizona Restaurant Weeks returns in a modified format to include dinein, take out and liquor to go options, we are hopeful that our wonderful community of food enthusiasts will continue to show their support in any way they feel comfortable.”

During the new Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines for opening and social distancing, whether dining in or taking out. The ARA is anticipating more than 200 of the Valley’s most beloved

restaurants — from five-star fine dining establishments to locally owned and operated “mom and pop” hidden gems — to get involved.

As in years past, participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated menus that showcase local chefs’ creative talents through innovative dishes. Featuring a unique tasting opportunity apart from their regular menus, restaurants will offer three-course, prix-fixe menus for just $33 or $44 per person. Wine pairings to enhance each course are offered at some establishments for an additional cost.

New and returning restaurants are welcome and encouraged to participate in this year’s ARW events. Applications can be completed online at arizonarestaurantweek.com/restaurant-participation. Diners can view a complete list of participating restaurants for Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out online at arizonarestaurantweek.com. The list is updated and restaurants’ ARW menus are added as participants continue to join.
