Official Investigation Crimps Panel Supplies for U.S. Solar Industry But savvy customers can still get a good deal. By Erick O’Donnell We reported just last October about the economic rain clouds looming over the American clean energy movement as inflation threatened rising costs for solar companies and their customers. Well, when it rains, it really does pour. Now a government investigation into alleged tariff circumvention by Chinese panel manufacturers is inflicting severe supply disruptions on American solar installers, threatening to curtail the nation’s clean energy transition. A survey of 200 American solar companies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that 74 percent have had orders canceled in the wake of the investigation. “This is the biggest threat I’ve seen in my 15 years in the solar industry,” said John Smirnow, general counsel and chief marketing strategist for the SEIA. The inquiry was launched by the Department of Commerce in response to a complaint filed in February by Auxin Solar, which alleged that various panel exporters in Southeast Asian countries were owned by Chinese companies and were being used to bypass tariffs set up by the Trump administration. Val Berechet, co-founder and CEO of Arizona-based installer SunSolar Solutions, predicted that some companies will go out of business after being caught unprepared. A reliable source told Berechet that a “major manufacturer” had just canceled a 100-megawatt order of panels and raised prices 20 percent on its remaining stock. The price of a certain panel used by SunSolar has gone up 62 percent since last April. “It’s insane,” Berechet said. Not that he’s sweating it. SunSolar has spent the past few months carefully preparing to thrive in an environment marked by severe
disruption, leveraging long-established industry relationships to boost the company’s panel inventory and thereby build a buffer against supply shocks, Berechet said. The company is also taking care not to commit to projects for which the availability of materials is not certain, he said. “From our end, it’s all about being informed and being on top of it,” Berechet said. “It’s about having plans so we can deliver to customers.” “I do feel confident in our ability to get through this challenging time,” he added. Berechet foresees severe trouble for companies that are not as prepared as SunSolar. “People who are not prepared, not on top of this, will absolutely be blindsided,” he said. For homeowners thinking about going solar, the recent supply shock only increases the urgency of the decision. Panel prices have been steadily creeping up because of general supply-chain issues, and Berechet predicts significant and durable increases in ultimate project costs. For example, a rooftop-installation project making use of the panels that cost 62 percent more this year will ultimately cost the customer about 20 percent more than before. The rush by customers to take advantage of today’s lower prices will only jack up the pressure on stragglers to commit. “There’s a ton of demand and limited supply,” Berechet said. “And demand will only increase, given this.” Even in these times of economic and political volatility, time can be on your side—if you’re willing to take action. AIOLI GOURMET BURGERS HAS BEEN SERVING AWARD WINNING BURGERS SINCE 2016 AT ITS 32ND STREET AND SHEA LOCATION. Inside, the walls are filled with fun décor, photos of eating competition winners, awards earned by chef and owner Tommy D’ Ambrosio, and other burger related art. However, outside on the patio, the décor lacked a sense of fun to tie everything together. In November 2021, Vivianna D’Ambrosio, director of sales and marketing at Aioli Gourmet Burgers, began the process of looking for a solution to improve their outdoor space.
Brown and Rank are best friends who share a passion for art. They are students in Shadow Mountain’s North Valley Arts Academy (NVAA) program. The Aioli Burger mural provided a great opportunity to become their senior capstone project.
“I’ve had it in my mind for years to eventually have a mural painted on the patio,” says D’Ambrosio. “We had this massive wall that was just begging to become a work of art.” So D’Ambrosio reached out to a family friend who put her in contact with Jenny Jardine, the art teacher at Shadow Mountain High School (SMHS). D’Ambrosio proposed the idea of having art students paint a mural. Jardine knew exactly which students would be perfect

Rank has always had a passion for art and she’s an accomplished violinist. Brown’s foray into the arts started with involvement in theatre that evolved when she painted a mural in her bedroom while doing online school during the COVID-19 shutdown. She shared her art on social media where friends, family and teachers started asking for her to do murals for them. Together Brown and Rank have painted murals on their school campus as well as at other schools within the Paradise Valley Unified School District. They have completed 10 murals during their senior year. “It’s really cool to have people like our work and want us to do murals for them,” says Brown. “We were so excited to create something at Aioli Burger.”
Having SMHS students paint the mural was special for co-owners Tommy D’Ambrosio and Kyle Hollenbeck, who are alumni and grew up in the neighborhood. “Supporting the local community is really important to us; it means so much to us to be able to help young people grow and thrive,” says D’Ambrosio. The young artists began the mural in January. The final product took 41 hours to complete and depicts Aioli Burger’s origin as a food truck, a large saucy burger, and a giant strawberry milkshake along with geometric details done in the brand’s signature color palette. The mural was officially unveiled on April 18 and a portion of that day’s proceeds went back to Shadow Mountain High School’s art program. “We love how it turned out,” say D’Ambrosio. “It was a pleasure working with Eloise and Kimmie.” You can see more of Brown and Rank’s work on Instagram @Eloiseandkimmie.murals.

During this trip we will visit the headwaters, take a short raft trip with Huckleberry Finn, and end in the deep Creole south and celebrate Mardi Gras. The concert also features a look at America through the eyes of Dvořák, with his interpretation of our land through his ‘Symphony from the New World,’ written after his visit to America in the 1890s.” “Finally, we are so pleased to present the world premiere of NVSO’s first commission, celebrating our tenth anniversary season,” he continues. “‘River Run’ was written by ASU professor emeritus James DeMars, aurally depicting the river of his childhood that splashes and plays from lake to pond in Minnesota. Local community members are invited to join their efforts as We’re Cool or Cool Caller Heat Relief volunteers and help keep our neighbors safe this summer.
WE’RE COOL HEAT RELIEF OUTREACH High summer temperatures lead to thousands of cases of heat-related illness in our community each year. All these cases are preventable with appropriate resources and precautions. The city of Phoenix’s We’re Cool initiative is a volunteer program that strives to prevent heat-related illnesses. The program provides heat relief supplies and helps connect residents to city services, especially in areas where heat-related health challenges occur more frequently. In 2017, the We’re Cool heat relief initiative was launched by the Volunteer Phoenix Office, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) of the Phoenix Fire Department to connect vulnerable residents to cooling centers and hydration stations during times of extreme heat. This initiative supports

Maricopa Association of Government’s Heat Relief Network that includes partners such as the Salvation Army, Maricopa Department of Public Health, Arizona State University, and the city’s Human Services, Parks, and Public Transit Departments. The city’s newly established Office of Heat Response and Mitigation has joined the We’re Cool initiative for summer 2022. Service Position Summary: We’re Cool volunteers engage community members in public spaces. Volunteers provide maps to cooling and hydration stations and health related summer safety information. Volunteers’ outreach will be focused on our underserved communities, transit locations, and parks and trailheads throughout Phoenix. The program will run for 24 weeks, and volunteers are asked to commit to one 4-hour shift per week. The total commitment is 100 service hours, including training. Qualifications: Volunteers must be at least 18, agree to and pass a background check, and have excellent communication skills. They also need to complete the pre-service training, have an ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers, and be able to safely work
outside in the heat for extended periods of time. Potential volunteers who may not feel comfortable working in the heat for extended periods of time are encouraged to contact Volunteer PHX Office for other opportunities to help prevent heat illness.
COOL CALLERS HEAT RELIEF OUTREACH The city of Phoenix’s Cool Callers initiative is a volunteer program that strives to prevent heat-related illnesses by conducting telephone-based wellness checks. Volunteers proactively guide residents to a wide variety of city and regional resources that can help keep home environments cool and safe during the summer
Service Position Summary: Cool Callers volunteers call community members who opt into the program at regular intervals during the summer, with a focus on days with National Weather Service Excessive Heat Warnings in effect. Volunteers conduct short questionnaires to assess residents’ health and safety and their ability to access sufficient cooling at home and in their neighborhood. Where necessary, volunteers can help guide residents to city and regional resources related to home cooling and heat safety. The program will run for 24 weeks and volunteers are asked to commit to two 2-hour shifts per week. Volunteers are asked to provide extra support during Excessive Heat Warning periods if possible. The total commitment is 100 service hours, including training. Qualifications: Volunteers must be at least 18, agree to and pass a background check, and have excellent communication skills. They also need to complete the pre-service training, have an ability to work with a diverse group of volunteers, and be able to use a mobile phone and communicate clearly. Arizona Restaurant Week Delights Diners with 10 Days of Culinary Exploration Popular Dining Event Is Back From May 20-29 By Molly Cerreta Smith Photos Courtesy of Timothy Fox Photography LET THE DINING BEGIN! The Arizona Restaurant Association’s most anticipated event of the season is almost here. The 2022 Spring Arizona Restaurant Week, 10 days of dining deliciousness, begins Friday, May 20 and runs through Sunday, May 29. During this event, diners can enjoy incredible deals and new creative menus at some of the hottest fine dining establishments in the state as well as at restaurants that remain among the Valley’s best hidden gems. Spring Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW) offers specific three-course menus at participating restaurants throughout the state. During this time, many chefs take the opportunity to create specialty dishes that aren’t generally on their menu, using seasonal and hard-to-find or on-trend ingredients to provide guests with a truly memorable dining experience. As the restaurant industry continues to navigate labor shortages, cost increases and limited supplies, the Arizona Restaurant Association added an additional price point last year to help offset the rising industry costs. The three price points still present the state’s dining community with the most delicious way to explore Arizona’s culinary scene for a great deal while allowing restaurants greater range to provide diners with an even more elevated dining experience. The three price points on ARW menus are $33, $44 or $55 per person, and even per couple in some instances. Restaurants also may opt to feature wine pairings for each course at an additional cost. With the various price points and wine pairing options, there are many ways that diners can customize their ARW experiences to suit their preferences. “Arizona Restaurant Week serves as a time to showcase the state’s culinary breadth and highlight the talent of chef-driven establishments while giving diners an opportunity to try new menus for a great 8 • May 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
deal,” says Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve Chucri. “With dine-in and take-out options and a variety of dining choices including high-end and independently owned best-kept secrets, we encourage diners to use Arizona Restaurant Week as an opportunity to support the industry while enjoying an incredible meal.” The Arizona Restaurant Association (ARA) has been presenting Arizona Restaurant Week for more than 15 years. As an advocate for the hospitality industry, the ARA works diligently to support the industry and present opportunities to help promote the restaurants around the state that contribute vibrantly to the state’s economy as well as its diverse dining scene. Since COVID-19 and the subsequent labor, food and supply shortages, rising prices and massive inflation, the restaurant industry has faced multiple challenges over the past few years. The ARA has responded quickly to each challenge, modifying Arizona Restaurant Week to provide take-out options at the height of restaurant dine-in closures and evolving the program again with additional price points to help restaurants continue to provide an incredible dining experience while recognizing the vast price hikes they are facing. That’s why it’s more important than ever for the local dining community and the culinary curious to get out and support Arizona’s restaurants. Phoenix Residents Needed to Respond to Literacy Crisis DURING THE PANDEMIC, THE NUMBER OF PHOENIX STUDENTS PASSING THEIR THIRD GRADE READING ASSESSMENT DECLINED TO 25 PERCENT—THE LOWEST SCORE IN SEVEN YEARS. The pandemic has led to a “COVID-19 slide” learning loss, further widening the gap between student achievement and grade level standards in literacy, particularly in low-income communities.

In consultation with the Phoenix Fire Department, smoking and charcoal fires are included in the ban due to the extreme fire danger that the combination of low humidity, increased temperatures, excessive dry vegetation, and frequent high winds create each spring. The ban applies to Camelback Mountain, Deem Hills Recreation Area, Lookout Mountain, Papago Park, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, North Mountain Park, Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, and South Mountain Park/Preserve. The ban does not apply to the city’s flatland parks. For those using the city’s desert parks and preserve land, the fire ban stipulates the following: • Open wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. • Propane or gas grills may be used, but only in established picnic areas. • Smoking outside enclosed vehicles is prohibited year-round. • Fireworks are prohibited year-round. Motorists traveling through or near Phoenix’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extreme care with smoking materials and dispose of those only in their vehicle’s ash tray. To protect their homes, residents whose property borders the city’s preserve land may remove dry shrubs, brush and grasses, and trim dead branches from trees within the 10-foot strip of land that borders their property. OTHER PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE AS TEMPERATURES RISE As the temperature increases and humidity drops this time of year, those utilizing the city’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extra caution. Heat-related illness is common from May to October, and generally occurs because the victim has been overexposed to heat or overexerted their body based on physical condition or age. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and Phoenix Fire Department remind trail users to “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” when enjoying the city’s desert parks and mountain preserves. This includes watching the weather, dressing appropriately, bringing plenty of water and staying hydrated, carrying a mobile phone to keep in contact, teaming up with others, being honest about medical conditions, not going off of marked trails, and being prepared for emergencies. For the safety of pets, dogs are prohibited on any city of Phoenix trail when the temperature is 100 degrees or warmer. The Arizona Humane Society advises that temperatures in the 90s are also unsafe for pets to be outdoors. ow high is your stress level? How well do you feel you manage your stress? These are two of the most important questions that I ask my patients. Stress affects us in so many ways and, when poorly managed, it can negatively impact our health, causing and aggravating chronic health conditions. Not all stress is bad and in certain situations it is a survival mechanism that increases our awareness and circulation to flee from potential danger. However, long term stress can deplete our body, increase inflammation, and lead to chronic health conditions. Although removing all potential stress triggers in life may not be attainable, we can manage it with naturopathic support and lifestyle changes to ensure optimal health. Here are some helpful tips.

SLEEP Sleep is crucial for stress management, but it is often the first thing sacrificed in stressful situations. In addition, chronic stress can disrupt sleep so it can feel like a neverending cycle. Good sleep hygiene such as eliminating electronics a minimum of 30 minutes before bed, meditating or adding in relaxing yoga are just a few ideas to ensure restful sleep. DIET Anti-inflammatory diets can be very helpful for managing stress. If we eat foods that naturally decrease inflammation, we will have less physical stress on our body. This helps prevent chronic health conditions, ensure proper digestion, and support our body for better stress management. Foods such as sugar, wheat, and dairy as well as any other food sensitivities can potentially increase inflammation and should be avoided. REGULAR EXERCISE Physical activity will release endorphins, which are chemicals that help decrease inflammation, support restful sleep and decrease stress. Daily exercise/movement plays an important role in stress management in addition to many other health benefits. ADRENAL SUPPORT Your adrenal glands produce a hormone called cortisol in response to stress. These
levels can rise initially with stress, however, from long term or chronic stress they become exhausted and may be lowered. Levels can be checked by your healthcare provider and proper support tailored to your individual needs can be implemented. Anything that you do to decrease stress levels will help support the adrenal glands. Naturopathic physicians can use treatments with herbal remedies, supplements and diet to also ensure proper adrenal health. LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT Treating the root cause is one of the main principles of naturopathic medicine. When it comes to stress management this is also true. We must identify potential stressors and eliminate what we can. In addition, support such as counseling or therapy for stress management can be beneficial. We may find it helpful to make priorities and goals, set healthy boundaries, not take on too much, and say “no” if needed. We want to focus on positivity in our lives and surround ourselves with healthy, nurturing relationships. With countless variations of the art developing over time, the practice can be loosely defined by its mixture of structured, yet fluent poses as well as its emphasis on controlled breathing. Through these actions, yoga has proven to be a reliable and popular method of exercise for decades, constantly capable of relieving stress and built-up tension for those who enjoy it. ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for the Valley of the Sun, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies, and first responders come out in droves this time of year cautioning parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including lakes, canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs, and ponds. Anyone who cares for children should be aware of the potential dangers and possible tragedies of drowning. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your kids safe around water as the weather warms up and pools become more attractive to children everywhere. PREVENTING DROWNING In addition to teaching kids how to swim, the best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone or the iPad down and be sure to always keep children within reach of an adult. Never leave a child alone around a
water source. It only takes two inches of water and a few seconds to drown. OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT DROWNING: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house. • Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys, or ladders away from pool fences. • Teach your children to always ask for permission to go near the water so they develop quality water safety habits at an early age. • Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area and don’t store toys near the pool. • Don’t allow anyone to swim alone – always swim with a buddy. • Drink plenty of water, even if you aren’t thirsty, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. • Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices near the pool and readily available. • Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are near a pool or water source and take the kids with you when you leave the area. • If a child is missing, check the water first because every second counts to prevent drowning.
• Make sure everyone in your family, children and adults, learn to swim. • Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after you use them. Store containers upside down so they don’t collect water and keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Do you know what to do in an emergency? Accidents are unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, whether a child or an adult. THE MAIN STEPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU FIND SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN A WATER EMERGENCY ARE: 1. Yell for help and pull the person out of the water. 2. Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions. 3. Begin CPR, if you know it. 4. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.
Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life. LEARNING TO SWIM One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning. There are many options for swimming lessons and a range of prices, times, and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town or go to a city pool or nonprofit community center. L
osing a child can be an unbearable pain for any parent to go through. For Marianne Gouveia, losing her son Eric James to suicide six years ago was no different. Amid her grief, Gouveia tried to look for a support system outside of her counselor that could help her get through the loss, however, she wasn’t able to find one. That is why in 2017 she decided to create EricsHouse, a local nonprofit organization that offers in-person and virtual services for people who have lost someone to alcohol, drugs, suicide, or any other form of self-harm. “For me it was necessary to find a way to turn my loss into good for others,” Gouveia says. “So now, instead of looking at my loss as a terrible, horrible thing—which of course it was and still is—I found a way to grow from my struggle. I found a way to help others and to integrate my loss into my life in a healthy way.” “Losing someone in this traumatic way comes with stigma, shame, and a different type of grief—it doesn’t just go away over time,” explains Patty Kincaid, ACC, Board Vice-Chairman at EricsHouse. “Our nonprofit
offers grief support groups and one-on-one grief companioning along with holistic services that help heal the whole person.” The EricsHouse team are all loss survivors themselves and can support clients without the judgement that often comes with these losses. Grief Companions receive over 150 hours of grief education taught by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, one of the world’s foremost grief experts. Kincaid shares that grieving parents are invited to join the Emmaus In-Person Retreat happening May 27-29. This workshop is for anyone who has lost a child, regardless of the reason or the length of time. Registration is required via the EricsHouse website. EricsHouse has multiple facets of their organization that allow not only locals to get involved, but those around the country as well. They offer virtual women and men’s support groups, as well as integrative grief care, which includes grief companioning, spiritual direction, health coaching, and reiki. With the numerous forms of healing that they offer, EricsHouse has received praise from many people that they’ve helped over the years.
“We get all kinds of wonderful feedback, and the reason for that is because we have an integrative model,” Gouveia says. “It’s not just counseling. We do breath work, energy work, and we teach grief education so people understand what it is what they’re feeling. hile complete numbers weren’t available as of press time, preliminary estimates indicate that Arizona Gives Day 2022 is on pace for another highly successful 24-hour fundraising campaign.

During this year’s 24-hour online fundraiser, which took place April 5-6, 27,741 individuals donated $4.22 million to 955 Arizona nonprofits through the Arizona Gives website (AZGives.org). Also, 868 volunteers
pledged 36,269 hours to help their favorite nonprofits impact their communities. It is estimated that, once tallied, the official number will be over $5 million.

A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to update our estate plan from time to time because change is inevitable. Are your children older now? Are your listed trustees and executors still a good choice? Check your plan to assure that you and your loved ones will be protected. • Name guardians for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents appointing guardians, especially if you are traveling without them. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so if needed.

• Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. “Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” A man recalls his childhood in 1969, which seems to be more fantastical than others. Richard Linklater uses his rotoscope animation style again, appropriate as it gives the film a feeling of a memory or a polaroid come to life. That’s the best way to sum up this movie— one long memory recount of a childhood that seems too insane to be true. It’s sort of an aimless movie, with its big selling point merely taking up less than a quarter of the film and its focus could be seen as boring or stretched out into a feature length. But there’s still enough charm from the actors to bring out the sincerity in it and of memories of a nostalgic time. And when it gets into the fantastical, it still fits and is entertaining. A nice, short ride.
IN THEATERS “Ambulance” Two brothers find themselves being chased across Los Angeles after stealing an ambulance with two hostages. A film 24 • May 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
full of pure adrenaline, “Ambulance” is Michael Bay’s strongest work in a decade. This is an empathetic piece, one that explores what happens to people forced by desperation into a terrible situation, eloquently shown in performances by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzláez. Even so, the film doesn’t forget to be the thrill ride it promised, where Bay’s kinetic and fast editing is complemented by a more unhinged performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s two hours of continuous chaos, with some of the most impressive action of Bay’s career where we feel the isolation of the ambulance while also getting the impression that the entire city is after these two. In an age where action films underdeliver on their most important aspects, this film is a real triumph.
In a movie where every character must play different versions of themselves, each actor delivers on the promise, particularly Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, who go back and forth between hilarious and heartbreaking in their performances. This is a movie where you can watch fantastic fight sequences with impeccable choreography followed by some immature humor that brings the laughs, followed by one of the most crushing sequences in a film this year that happens to be between two rocks. And somehow, it all comes together and makes for what may be the best picture of the year. It’s not often we see something like this, and everyone should experience it.
biggest sin though is that, despite its claim as a horror film, there’s no tense nature to be found and it can’t even hide behind the “slow-burn” handle. Goran Stolevski’s directing is impressive and he shows some genuine promise for future films, but as a writer, it is what causes the whole film to collapse.

“You Won’t Be Alone” A witch travels between various bodies to see the human experience. Sometimes, you come across a film that you want to admire but can’t. “You Won’t Be Alone” starts out well, with one of the most quietly nerve-wracking scenes of the year. But after that, we experience a very dull film; one that comes off as aimless. For a film that’s all about the experience of being human, none of the bodies our lead inhabits deliver a threedimensional feeling and even the usually great Noomi Rapace seems bored.
