The plan is for Renew Phoenix, a joint venture between Generated Materials Recovery and Renewlogy, to work together to build a facility to process the materials on the city’s Resource Innovation Campus.

“I am excited for what this partnership brings to Phoenix,” said Councilman Michael Nowakowski, whose district is home to the city’s Resource Innovation Campus. “This new, innovative venture will encourage other businesses to bring-next generation technology to Phoenix to help us reach our diversion goal of 40 percent by 2020.”

Renew Phoenix was selected through a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Their plan is to use a proprietary chemical recycling process to reverse the plastic back into its basic molecular structure, which will allow them to convert the plastic waste into fuel. Renew Phoenix will also bring as many as 15 full-time jobs to the valley, after investing more than five million dollars in capital to the project.

“Renewlogy is excited about bringing our technology to Phoenix and creating a more circular economy around plastic waste locally,” said Priyanka Bakaya, Founder and CEO of Renewlogy.

“Phoenix will serve as a model for cities around the country looking for local solutions for plastic waste.”

Once at full production, the project is expected to divert ten tons per day of mixed plastic waste, which equates to 60 barrels of liquid fuel. This partnership will not only help Phoenix, but the Valley altogether. Renew Phoenix will be able to scale their production to allow regional remanufacturing of Plastics 3-7 to be processed as well.

“We are proud to continue bucking the trend and pushing forward with innovation, economic development and repurposing our waste,” said Ginger Spencer, city of Phoenix Public Works Director. “We are committed to building a circular economy and achieving our Reimagine Phoenix goals. This new venture to turn plastics into fuel is eyeopening and we hope it will serve as a model for other cities to reimagine their own recycling programs.”

LOCAL RESTAURANT HOSTS PAJAMA DRIVE FOR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE U.S. EGG IS TEAMING UP WITH ARIZONA HELPING HANDS (AHH) TO HOST A NEW TOY AND PAJAMA DRIVE FOR BOYS AND GIRLS IN FOSTER CARE. AHH is the largest organization in Arizona that provides beds, cribs, clothing, toiletries, birthday gifts, holiday toys, backpacks with school supplies, licensing safety items, and more to more than 14,000 children in foster care.

“It may come as a surprise to many, but many children in foster care have never had their birthday celebrated and often do not have any personal belongings when they go into a foster home,” said Sherie Siegel, Vice President of Arizona Helping Hands.

“Providing a new pair of pajamas or piece of clothing that is theirs makes a huge impact. Every child should feel special for their birthday. Providing new birthday gifts shows them that people truly care and take the time to think about them. We are thankful for the community’s support with this drive.”

PHOENIX RAISES MINIMUM PAY FOR EMPLOYEES TO PROVIDE LIVABLE WAGE

NEW $15 MINIMUM WAGE WILL TAKE EFFECT FOR FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES IN MAY TO PROVIDE A LIVABLE WAGE TO ALL THE CITY’S FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF NEWLY-ELECTED MAYOR KATE GALLEGO, RAISED EMPLOYEE MINIMUM WAGE TO $15 AN HOUR AT ITS APRIL 3 FORMAL MEETING. “I am proud that in my first City Council meeting as Mayor, my colleagues and I took concrete action to show our support for employees by providing them a true living wage that will make a real difference in their day-today lives,” said Mayor Kate Gallego.

“The City of Phoenix is proud to have incredible employees who work hard to improve our community every day, and we must take the necessary steps to ensure that they are paid what they deserve. This will benefit our working families, young employees just beginning their careers who have dedicated themselves to public service, and for every employee who works hard and deserves a livable wage.”

The recommendation, passed by a unanimous vote of the City Council,

positions the City to better compete for talent in a competitive job market and ensures that people who provide frontline customer support in a variety of roles in the organization are compensated fairly.

“Phoenix City Council’s unanimous action yesterday to guarantee a $15 minimum wage for our employees was a huge win for working families,” said District 5 Councilwoman Vania Guevara. “It’s exciting to see our City leading by example, making sure our employees are paid a wage that allows them to provide for their families, save for the future, and invest in themselves and their community.”

The change in the minimum wage grew out of a collaborative discussion between city leadership and one of the City’s employee labor groups, LiUNA Local 777. LiUNA represents city employees in Unit 1, holding unskilled and semi-skilled positions. Applied to all employees, the increase would also affect positions represented by Unit 2 (trades workers) and Unit 3 (clerical workers) across the organization.

“Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour for the men and women who work at the City of Phoenix is life changing.

These employees work tirelessly each day for the community and deserve to be paid a livable wage,” said Jennifer Grondahl, Secretary, LiUNA Local 777.

“We are thrilled with the Mayor and Council’s unanimous vote for a $15 an hour minimum wage at the city. It truly shows the dedication of Mayor Gallego and the City Council in making sure Phoenix is a leader among cities to establish a living wage for all,” said Frank Piccioli, President AFSCME Local 2960 “This is a step in the right direction in ensuring we offer our employees

proper livable wages,” said District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski.

“To be the best city we can, we must not only provide the best services for our community but also pay our employees fair living wages for the work they do.”

The state minimum wage in Arizona is currently set at $11 per hour and applied to Phoenix employees before the new Council action took effect.

PHOENIX POLICE SHOOTINGS REPORT RELEASED

THE PHOENIX POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASED A HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL INDEPENDENT STUDY REPORT ON LAST YEAR’S DRAMATIC SPIKE IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTINGS.

The 66-page report by the National Police Foundation was created through statistics as well as interviews with the community and officers alike. Fortunately, the study did not find any major issues with the department’s training and policies.

“We found no evidence in our review that policy or training is flawed or misguided and in fact found that PPD executive staff have taken many reasonable steps to strengthen both policy and training,” it said in the Key Findings and Recommendations section.

Where the study did find fault was in a disconnect between police and the public.

PPD actions revealed a lack of transparency on the part of PPD and a lack of trust between PPD and the community that may be inhibiting transparency,” it said.

The report made nine recommendations, including taking steps to track how often police point their guns at suspects, regardless of shots being fired, and taking a stronger role in sharing data with the community.

The study, which was requested by Chief Jeri Williams, was approved and funded ($150,000.00) by the Phoenix City Council in July of 2018. By the end of that same year, Phoenix officer involved shootings had reached a record 44. From 2009 to 2017, the department averaged 21 officer-involved shootings.

The 23 fatalities from last year’s shootings were the highest across the nation. Los Angeles Police Department was second with 14. Philadelphia, San Antonio and San Diego (all similarly populated cities) combined only reached 30.

Phoenix Police have already taken steps to make changes. These include more body cameras to help make officers, and hopefully the public, more cognizant of the interaction as a whole. New types of training have also been adopted to help officers not to react in a military style, but to handle real world situations such as mental health issues, suicides, road rage and more.

What does this mean to our city? The study showed an increase in police interactions with armed subjects, which leads to yet another question as to why? Is this a sign of a change in community? Family? Immigration? Over population?

Earnings were the leading contributor to personal income growth in 2018.

Arizona’s net earnings increased by 5.8 percent from 2017 to 2018, the fourth fastest rate in the nation. Construction, health care and social assistance; finance and insurance; professional, scientific, and technical services; and administrative and waste management services were the largest contributors to earnings growth from 2017 to 2018.

TIPS TO STAY HYDRATED

ummer is approaching and with that comes the heat! I know you probably hear this a lot but don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Our body uses water in all of its cells, organs and tissues. It helps to regulate our temperature, brain function and maintain balance among other bodily functions. It also helps flush toxins and waste from our body. When we aren’t properly hydrated it starts to show in different ways in our body.

Headaches, muscle spasms, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, brain fog, irritability and constipation are all signs of a dehydrated body. Many of our symptoms can be easily solved if we just drink enough water!

Did you know that having digestive issues or hormonal imbalances affect your body’s natural ability to balance electrolytes? Balancing electrolytes require them to be digested, absorbed and converted into cellular components. Studies have shown that under normal, healthy conditions, our ability to get rid of excess water and salt is limited and further reduced in certain complications. Various medications and autoimmune diseases can also put you at further risk of dehydration.

A good rule of thumb is to drink enough water so that you are urinating 3-4 times a day with a pale yellow color. For most people, this is between eight and ten glasses. Make sure to drink more if you are spending time outside in the heat, exercising, or if you are sick, adding a glass of water for every cup of coffee or soda that you drink.

Acute inflammation is a shortterm healing process that warns our body of an injury. For example, if you break a bone, the body reacts quickly with redness, swelling, pain and heat.

This warns us to be more cautious of the injured area, preventing any further damage.

Chronic inflammation is a low level of inflammation that is not visible. It is a result of prolonged acute inflammation, repetitive injuries or even external factors such as chemicals, medications, nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, and metabolic diseases. If not addressed, this chronic inflammation can aggravate and/or lead to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, and diabetes.

Diet and lifestyle play an important role in chronic inflammation. It is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways, to decrease your overall inflammation, protect your immune system and make you a healthier you. Here’s what to do.

INCREASE YOUR VEGETABLES AND FRUIT: Colorful vegetables and fruit contain a variety of anti-inflammatory properties.

Many fruits and vegetables are beneficial, however green leafy vegetables, berries, cherries, and pomegranate are excellent choices for a healthy diet.

Tropical fruits such as pineapple, mango and bananas are higher in sugar and should be limited or avoided while treating inflammation.

CHOOSE WHOLE GRAINS AND LOW SUGAR FOODS: Intake of refined grains and simple sugars is associated with the risk of developing inflammatory mediated diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. should be limited or avoided. It is best to eat complex carbohydrates that are unprocessed such as whole oats, whole rye, barley, and legumes.

GOOD FATS VS BAD FATS: Poly-unsaturated fats high in Omega-3 fatty acids provide anti-inflammatory benefits. The best sources include flaxseeds, walnuts and cold-water fish such as salmon. Flaxseed oil is a potent plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids but should not be heated.

Processed fats such as soybean oil, safflower oil, corn oil and canola oil should be avoided. Avoid trans fats which can be disguised in the form of shortening, margarine and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Always read labels.

HERBS AND SPICES: Powerful anti-inflammatory herbs and spices include turmeric, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, basil, rosemary and thyme.

REDUCE YOUR TOXIC LOAD: Many industrial chemicals and pesticides can cause inflammation. When possible, choose organic foods and “green” personal care and cleaning products.

STRESS REDUCTION: Stress can be just as aggravating to the immune system as the foods we eat. Physical activity, yoga, nature and plenty of sleep may be helpful ways to reduce stress thus, decreasing inflammation.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HYPNOSIS

H

ypnosis conjures many images for most of us, from night club acts to regressing people into past lives to satisfy curiosity, but it can be so much more than that. Few realize the true health benefits that can be derived from working with a trained hypnotherapist, even though the American Medical Association has recognized the health values of hypnotherapy since 1958.

Local business owner and long-time North Phoenix resident, Ron Benninghoff is hoping to change that perception with the opening of his new business Phoenix Hypnosis. His specialties include weight loss, smoking cessation and stress relief. He has also recently completed training in hypnosis for pain-free, natural childbirth.

In answer to people who associate

hypnosis with being asked to cluck like a chicken, Ron explains that hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis which means that subjects will use their subconscious to affect change in themselves, during which they will do only what they want to do. His clients are always in complete control of their actions.

Ron first encountered hypnosis 30 years ago as a stage act. He was fascinated and finally, 10 years ago, was able to begin his training in hypnotherapy at Southwest Institute for Healing Arts in Tempe. This allowed him to begin helping people improve their lives and investigating solutions to their problems through hypnosis. His tag line is “Rise from the ashes; Emerge as new.”

CONSUMER ALERT: CHANGES COMING TO SUNSCREENS

t can be challenging-even frustrating-trying to decipher sunscreen labels. That’s why the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reviewing its regulations. To keep up with modern science and ensure safety, quality, and effectiveness, the FDA has proposed updating requirements for more over-the-counter products.

Certain active ingredients that are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) can be marketed without undergoing a new drug application process through the FDA. Currently, only two marketed active ingredients-zinc oxide and titanium dioxide-are considered (GRASE).

Under the proposed regulation, products containing two other active ingredients-PABA and trolamine salicylate-are not considered GRASE for sunscreens and would need FDA approval before they are marketed. The agency says there is insufficient data on twelve other ingredients and has asked the sunscreen industry to conduct additional testing.

To help consumers identify key information, the FDA wants to see active ingredients listed on the front of packages, bringing sunscreens in line with other over-the-counter drugs regulated by the FDA. A new maximum-labeled SPF value is also proposed. The current cap is SPF 50+ but the agency says new evidence shows additional benefits associated with broad-spectrum SPF 60 sunscreens.

Broad spectrum protects you from both UVA and UVB rays which can lead to premature aging and cause skin cancer. That’s why the FDA is proposing that all sunscreens with SPF values of 15 and above meet broad-spectrum requirements and, as SPF increases, broad-spectrum protection also increases.

Since sunscreens can be applied in a variety of ways, the FDA has different recommendations. For sunscreens that include sprays, oils, lotions, creams, gels, butters, pastes, ointments, and sticks, the agency says they are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE), but more data is needed for sunscreen powders.

Forms that are not considered GRASE include: wipes, towlettes, body washes, and shampoos.

To receive GRASE status, they would have to go through the approval process for new drugs. When it comes to sunscreen-insect repellant combination, the FDA will not label products as GRASE because of incompatibilities between instructions for sunscreen and insect repellant.

The FDA proposal is available for public review and comment until May 28. You can submit comments at www.regulations.gov Wearing sunscreen should be part of your daily routine. Use a minimum SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection. Apply fifteen minutes before exposure and reapply at least every two hours or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. If possible, avoid extensive exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when sun radiation is most harmful.

ew things hold the power to render a person invisible. Homelessness is one of them.

As a homeless person confronts society’s perception of their worth, they experience a radical shift in their identity. They struggle with basic life questions such as who they are and what the future will bring.

“One day I was putting gas in my car when I witnessed a homeless man asking if he could wash car windows for money. People would yell at him and push him away.

As he walked towards me with his head down, I was expecting him to ask to wash my windows. I was going to say yes, but he kept walking. As he passed me, I asked if he could wash my windows

and he said, ‘Yes.’ After he was done he started walking away, not even asking for money. This took me by surprise. But I felt he did a service and should be rewarded.

I called him over to pay him. His eyes opened wide and I could just see the joy on his face. I checked my wallet and all I had was a $10 bill. My first thought was ‘$10 for a simple window wash seems too much,’ but I looked at the bigger picture. Do I need that $10 more than he does? And my answer was no. I felt he needed it more than I did. So I gave it to him and he said that it was too much and he couldn’t accept it. But I insisted. The look on his face will be something I’ll never forget.”

Some of them were the same people who were yelling at him. That’s when I realized sometimes all it takes is just one person to start something, and I could be that first person.”

To be a person of influence, you simply need to care about people. Everybody needs somebody to connect with and help them grow.

WHY STEM SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR KIDS

A

s a parent of school age children, you’ve probably heard people touting the wonders and importance of STEM education for kids. But what is STEM and why is it so important for your kid to get up to speed on it? STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

A good understanding of these areas of study can help your child have a better understanding of how our world works today and give them an edge when then eventually enter the workforce as an adult.

WHY STEM SUBJECTS ARE IMPORTANT STEM learning can help build a child’s critical thinking skills, sense of curiosity, creativity, and an understanding of technology and the scientific method while discovering new things. STEM education typically presents real-world scenarios that kids can work on, study and solve with a hands-on, scientific approach.

These skills are important elements of “learning how to learn,” which is a critical element of most solution-oriented, not to mention higher paying, jobs.

A study by the U.S. Department of Commerce showed that occupations involving STEM are growing at 17 percent, while occupations in other fields are growing at less than 10 percent. The study also showed that people who have a degree in a STEM field generally have a higher income than those who are involved in other careers. People in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math play an essential role in sustaining the current U.S. economy, and will likely remain a critical component well into the future.

A WORLD OF RAPIDLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGY As science and technology have become increasingly more important in our world, kids will need STEM skills to succeed more than ever before. STEM is an essential part of everything we do every day. Science is key to everything around us, from medicine, to the products we use, to understanding the natural world.

The technology to understand and develop that science is constantly evolving and expanding into every aspect of our daily lives. And engineering is the basic foundation not only for building infrastructure, like roads, bridges, and buildings, but also for the way organizations, businesses and governments operate and become continually more efficient.

When interviewed by the We Are Teachers website, James Brown, executive director of the STEM Education Coalition in Washington, D.C., and a nuclear engineer by training, explained, “What binds together the STEM movement is the notion of modern skills. Employers talk about problem-solving. Society requires problem-solving. Doing your taxes requires problem-solving. Those are the types of skills that really matter.

A practicing engineer will tell you, ‘I didn’t use the calculus I learned to solve problems on paper, but the way it taught me to solve problems and to think about problems was really important.”

STEM educational opportunities are more widely available than ever. Parents and teachers can find programs, classes, camps, and museums that focus on educational programs and activities to encourage and develop a better understanding of STEM for kids. Here are a few of the many organizations around the Valley that offer STEM programs and activities to inspire kids of all ages:

PROJECT VETERANS PRIDE – THE JAMES WALTON HOME

I

t’s hard to believe that those who put themselves on the front lines and risk their lives for our country during their US military service are over 50 more likely to become homeless and to experience homelessness longer than non-veterans.

Yet of the 23 million military veterans in the United States, 529,000 to 840,000 are homeless at some time during the year. In Arizona, there are approximately 1,036 homeless and jobless veterans.

These somber statistics show the harsh realities that those in the military face upon discharge due lack of family and support networks, shortage of affordable housing, PTSD, and other barriers.

One local Valley non-profit seeks to change all of this. Project Veteran’s Pride (PVP) is 501( c )3 organization founded by military veterans in 2011 with the mission to end veteran homelessness by creating a well-balanced environment that will restore the pride and dignity of those who served our country so that they can return as self-sufficient and productive members of society. Through the James Walton Home (JWH), PVP provides homeless veterans with a comprehensive 30/60/90 program that gives them a “hand up” to do just that.

Opened in 2013, The James Walton Home is a transitional home that can house up to twenty homeless veterans per day in a safe, home-like environment where they complete the innovative PVP program.

Residents are referred to JWH through the VA after a thorough vetting process. New residents are greeted with a warm handshake or hug, then given a day’s rest to decompress. After this, they will use their time at the JWH to get needed medical treatment through the VA, obtain job training, and seek permanent employment and housing. Residents are also given household responsibilities which empowers them with a sense of duty and responsibility.

Their stay at the James Walton Home will last up to 90 days.

“Our residents really do enjoy their responsibilities,” says Dr. Christeen Verchot, retired United States Air Force LTC, President of Project Veteran’s Pride, and Executive Director of the James Walton Home. “Their time of military service was led by structure and accountability, and they’re able regain that here, which will prepare them for success after their stay at The James Walton Home.”

And the program WORKS. Since the first resident arrived on Veteran’s Day in 2013, over 650 now-formerly-homeless veterans have graduated the program. 91 have continued to live off the street. 79 are employed, while others have returned to living with their families and restoring those relationships.

Dr. Verchot and her team stay in touch with their former residents, ensuring that they’ll always have a network to turn to. On June 21, they will reunite with ten James Walton Home graduates at the Dressing Vets for Success, the organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. Locally-owned Ceiphers Clothing hosts and produces the event, which showcases graduates of the James Walton Home modeling “Job Ready” Ceiphers Clothing looks. The event will also feature live entertainment, a raffle and live auction, and more.

All proceeds will benefit PVP. Tickets are currently on sale, and sponsorship and raffle donation opportunities are also available.

OPENS FIFTH LOCATION AT 40TH ST & GREENWAY

T

he sunny days and blue skies of Arizona lured Liz Illg to Phoenix. Professional and personal success — she’s the owner of Puff & Fluff Grooming and Pet Sitting — have enabled this Iowa native to plant deep roots in the community she loves and calls home.

Have you ever had a dream that you allowed to go unrealized simply because you lacked the courage and conviction to put it all on the line?

Small businesses are the foundation and lifeblood of this country’s economy, and Illg is living proof that with hard work, dedication and perseverance, you can surge forward with total confidence in your abilities to build the life of your dreams.

“I came from a home where my mom raised us on a lower income,” Illg said.

“I didn’t have things given to me. I had to work very hard to get to where I am now.”

While majoring in business at Arizona State University, she started a petsitting business to make money to pay her own tuition. A brand-new business degree in hand and an interest in learning sales led her to accept a corporate job in that field. Her pet-sitting business continued as a hobby until, one day, she envisioned transforming it into a beautiful storefront.

“I’ve always wanted to work for myself,” Illg said. “I’ve always wanted to have my own something—I didn’t know whether it would be a product or

something else. But I wanted to be the one to create the vision for something that was all mine.”

One night, she enthusiastically Googled “pet businesses.” Her searching yielded a local grooming shop.

“I had no money at that time,” Illg said, “and with a ton of student loan debt to my name, I had no business looking for a business to buy.”

But she didn’t give up on her pipe dream. She persevered.

Still working at her corporate job, she took her lunch breaks to apply for a business loan. Bank after bank rejected her.

“I didn’t have a business plan,” Illg said, “I was not in a place to be buying a business, but one bank told me they would give me a personal line of credit. This line of credit was going to allow me to buy the storefront.”

“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” While she was thrilled to have been approved for the personal line of credit, she was still $4,000 short what was required to make her purchase. Committed to her dream and full of belief in herself and her abilities, she contacted members of her family and respectfully and professionally asked them for a loan. Despite her lifetime of nurturing her entrepreneurial spirit, she listened as, one by one, no one was willing to loan her the money as they all saw her venture as being too risky.

“My last resort was to call my dad

who was still a farmer back in Iowa,” Illg said. “He didn’t understand what I was thinking; he thought my idea was crazy. I was still waiting to hear from him regarding the money when I checked the mail one day. Inside was a check from him for $4,000 with a note that said, ‘You can pay me back when you’re a success’.”

In the end, because her father believed in her, she was able to purchase her first business location. Business bought and finally in her hands, she was deeper in debt than ever. Debt management and repayment was critical to her overall success. After assessing everything she owed to everyone, she reasoned that her personal line of credit had to be satisfied first because it carried the highest interest rate.

She dug in and worked hard, and she paid everything off that she owed in full. Sadly, she was unable to repay her dad as he passed away. But better than money, he lived long enough to see her first storefront thrive as she was on her road to success. No papa could ever be prouder or ask for more.

“My dad was my lifeline to making this dream come true,” Illg said. “I’m a risk taker. I took a big risk, and there was a lot on the line that I could’ve lost if it hadn’t worked. But I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken that risk and if my dad hadn’t believed in me.”

Now, she’s living the life she’d always imagined for herself, and last year, she got married.

She bought that first store, called Puff & Fluff, in March of 2013. While north32ndnews.com

she’s not a pet groomer, she loves animals, and she’s very hands-on in her ownership and management of all the business operations. What started out as a small 450 square foot shop employing one groomer and one bather has grown into a total of five Puff & Fluff locations in the Valley located in Arcadia, Arrowhead, Litchfield, North 32nd and Uptown.

Her fifth location, which is located in the North 32nd neighborhood, is particularly close to her heart as this is where she, her husband and their five dogs live.

Opening a store in the area she calls home not only felt right but it’s deepened her bond with her community.

lants can be a lovely way to spruce up your home and bring the outside in, but did you know some plants can be lethal to cats and/ or dogs if ingested? The team here at Puff & Fluff wants to make sure your furry friends are safe and healthy all year long! Whether or not you have a green thumb, knowing what plants to avoid can help keep your pets out of harm’s way. Below are some plants and flowers that have been reported to cause illness in both cats and dogs: • Tulip • Lilies • Daffodil • Aloe Vera • Jade Plant • Elephant Ear • Asparagus Fern Of course, the above is in no way an exhaustive list. In fact, the Humane Society of the United States has identified over 700 unique plants as “producers of physiologically active or toxic substances that are dangerous to pets.”

Our advice? If you’re bringing a plant

into your home or an outdoor space where your pets have access, do a bit of research first.

Sometimes the entire plant is toxic but for others it may just be the bulb, stem, leaf or petal that poses a threat.

Additionally, the toxicity of plants may vary– some may give your pet an upset stomach while others can lead to heart failure. If you have questions or concerns, your veterinarian is always a great source of information!

While you may do everything you can to protect your pet, your furry friend may find trouble outside where you have no control. In that case, it’s best to know the symptoms. If your pet exhibits any of the following signs of illness, contact your local veterinarian immediately: • Diarrhea/vomiting/seizures • Difficulty breathing/coughing • Confusion/depression/shivering There are plenty of resources out there should you ever have any questions about keeping your pets safe. These include the ASPCA Animal Poison Control and the Pet Poison Hotline.

ne of the trends in gardening and landscaping today is the increasing use of decorative containers. Any object that holds soil in which a plant can be grown is fair game. Pots, tubs, and half barrels overflowing with flowers add appeal to any garden. Container gardening can serve a practical purpose too - it is ideal for those with little or no garden space.

• The color of plant foliage and flowers should coordinate with container color.

• Dark colored containers absorb heat more than light or reflective colors.

They will dry the soil faster, requiring frequent watering.

Here is all you need to know to DIY your very own container garden!

• Among garden bed plants.

PROPER CONTAINER PLANTING • Make sure your container has sufficient drainage holes in the bottom.

• Do not use saucers that retain water on the bottom of any pots.

• Cover drainage holes with a screen type material to allow water, not soil, to drain out.

• Fill with a draining soil suitable for the type of plant to be grown in the container.

• Leave at least an inch of head room for watering.

• Water newly potted plants twice to allow for initial compacting.

CHOOSING A PLANT FOR YOUR CONTAINER • The shape of container will determine the shape of the plant to use, to obtain the proper symmetry.

• Plant succulent plants in porous containers, others in more moisture retaining containers.

• Location is a factor in plant choice, e.g. sun/shade and wind level.

• Containers look best when grouped together.

CONSIDER PLACEMENT • The beauty of container grown plants is that they can be used anywhere!

• Recycle nursery containers. Many nurseries propagate their own plants and will gladly take them to reuse, saving them production cost which passes the saving to the consumer.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR CONTAINER GARDENING • Often, large containers are very heavy and difficult to move when filled completely with soil. Try filling the bottom of a deep pot or container with light fillers (e.g. pine bark), and then soil for your plants growing needs.

• Clay pots build up mineral deposits that can cause excessive salinity to filter into the soil, in addition to looking bad. The best way to clean them is with an equal one-third solution of vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and water.

SHARK FRENZY! FUN, FLEXIBLE SUMMER PROGRAM AT HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOLS

his year, from May 28 through July 29, HFSS will offer a great summer program called “Shark Frenzy” that will be available for swimmers who know all four strokes but want to get stronger and faster. The purpose of this new Shark Frenzy program will be to give children the opportunity to expand their swimming skills with intensive sessions, swim meets, and clinics all summer long.

SHARK FRENZY PRACTICES: Practices allow parents to pick multiple, oneweek sessions throughout the summer months.

MONEY, FUN, AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE ARE ALL PART OF SUMMER JOB EXPERIENCE

A

t nearly 7,000 feet, the historic mountain town of Williams, Arizona is an enticing destination during the hot summer months. For high school graduates and college students, it may also be the best job location they will ever have.

Located near Williams is a summer camp for children and adults with special needs. Founded in 1968, Camp Civitan was one of the first stay-over camps for people with all abilities in the country. Today, the camp is recognized nationally for its services and programs for the disabled. The summer camp offers 10-weeklong sessions where campers experience a variety of enriching and fun experiences that promote positive selfesteem, teamwork, socialization and healthy activities.

Each weeklong camp session, starting May 30 through August 5, offers special needs campers, some as young as 8 and as old as 65, the opportunity to make new friends, sing, dance, create art projects, do theatrical skits, fish and visit area attractions. Many of the trips include the Grand Canyon, Bearizona, area lakes and other destinations. Campers and staff, as well, gain many new life skills which include self-confidence and independence.

On average, summer staff return to Camp Civitan for four summers, and many work weekends during one of the 12-weekend camp sessions throughout the year.

Staff not only return to camp each year for the fun and relationships with other staff and returning campers, but camp staff positions are also paid, on average, for the entire 10week summer sessions over $5,000, including all meals and lodging.

“I was a staffer for three years while in college,” said Michael “Skippy” Hough, director of Camp Civitan. “After college I was a teacher and worked briefly for the state. Working at camp made such an impact on my life that I knew I wanted to work with this population as a career.”

“I’ve been involved with Camp Civitan for over 30-years,” said Civitan Foundation CEO Dawn Trapp. “Nearly every one of the camp staff over the years has either stayed in touch, changed their careers to work with people with disabilities or now volunteers with a social agency. Camp Civitan encourages teens, ages 13-17, to volunteer. Not only will the experience offer community service hours and resume reference, but teens will share their talents and skills, learn activity planning, develop leadership skills and make life-long memories and friends, as well.

Assignments include kitchen duty, organizing sporting activities and assisting camp staff with members.

ost people in Phoenix venture north of the Valley for a day trip now and then.

We like to visit the mountains, tall pines and cool summers of Flagstaff with trips to the Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim and the small towns and sights to see on the way. But north of Flagstaff and the South Rim lies a vast, sparsely populated wilderness. If you’re looking for adventure on the road less travelled, here are some places you can visit north of I-40 in Arizona.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK – NORTH RIM If you enjoy the majestic beauty of the Grand Canyon, but aren’t crazy about all the tourists, you should check out the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim is about a four-hour drive from the South Rim and sits at over 8000 feet in elevation, which means it is closed during winter months due to harsher winter weather. With gorgeous views and an abundance of wildlife, the North Rim has just one lodge, one campground and accounts for only 10 percent of all Grand Canyon visitors.

VERMILION CLIFFS NATIONAL MONUMENT On the road to the North Rim of the

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier Grand Canyon lies a spectacular vision of towering canyon walls. The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is located on 294,000-acres of the Colorado Plateau, just south of Utah.

This monument includes the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, which is home to Coyote Buttes. You may recognize this international hiking destination, which features rock formations of colorful, swirled crossbedded sandstone – it’s home to the famously photographic “Wave” rock formation. Be sure to plan ahead and prepare for a trip into the wilderness; there is no Visitor Center or lodging, but camping is allowed in designated areas or with a backcountry permit.

GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is located on the Arizona and Utah border, at the center of the Colorado Plateau. This natural wonder encompasses over 1.25 million acres and offers visitors an array of water-based and backcountry recreation. The recreation area also protects scenic, scientific, natural, and cultural resources on Lake Powell, the Colorado River, its tributaries, and surrounding lands. The gateway to Glen Canyon and Lake Powell is the small town of Page, Arizona.

GRAND CANYON – PARASHANT NATIONAL MONUMENT The Grand Canyon National Park is not the only way to see the incredible views the Grand Canyon offers. You can travel west of the North Rim and take a rocky, two-track road in a 4x4 to the edge of the Grand Wash Cliffs, where you will find a stunning, solitary view deep into the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is a dynamic geologic environment with amazing vistas, volcanic flows and mountains on the move. The monument is incredibly remote, so plan ahead and be prepared to leave pavement, cell service, and modern conveniences behind.

NAVAJO NATIONAL MONUMENT Just south of the Utah border and about an hour west of Monument Valley, you will find the Navajo National Monument. Established in 1909 to protect the remains of three large and incredibly well-preserved prehistoric pueblos, Keet Seel, Betatakin, and Inscription House, this monument represents a long cultural history of the Navajo people and their ancestors. Located on the Navajo Nation approximately nine

miles from Highway 160 at the end of AZ Highway 564, the Navajo National Monument is a free park that offers a picnic area and camping facilities.

MONUMENT VALLEY TRIBAL PARK Stunning rock formations and broad vistas welcome you to the Navajo Nation’s Monument Valley Park. SPRING ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEK RETURNS MAY 17-26:

THE 10 MOST DELICIOUS DAYS THIS SEASON

or dining enthusiasts, spring in Arizona is a delicious time. The season is sprinkled with some of the best culinary events throughout the state — including Arizona Restaurant Week, which gives Valley foodies a taste of the local dining scene at its finest. Presented by the Arizona Restaurant Association, this spring’s Arizona Restaurant Week spans 10 days, from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 26, and offers diners a chance to sample prix-fixe menus from local hidden gems to some of the finest dining establishments in the state.

Considered the “most edible time of year,” this season marks the 12th anniversary of Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW), an event which was established to allow restaurants around the state to showcase their culinary chops (many restaurants features dishes during this time that are not on their usual menus) and give diners an opportunity to experience an extraordinary culinary journey that they’ve not yet had the chance to explore. According to Steve Chucri, President and CEO of the Arizona Restaurant Association, another goal of ARW is to solidify Arizona’s position as one of the country’s top culinary destinations by increasing awareness of the nearly 9,000 dining opportunities available throughout the state and also stimulate business for restaurants around Arizona. In fact, participating establishments report an average 20 percent increase in sales during Arizona Restaurant Week.

“Each year we are delighted by the growth of the event not only in restaurant participation in Phoenix and around the entire state, but also in the attendance during these 10 days of dining,” Chucri says.

“We are proud to be among the organizations that are dedicated to elevating our state’s culinary scene into the spotlight — and that the state’s culinary status is being so well received by our locals and visitors, too.”

Much has changed since the event’s inception in 2008, including the addition of both a spring and a fall Arizona Restaurant Week. The event began with Fall Arizona Restaurant Week, but due to popular demand Spring Arizona Restaurant Week was introduced in 2011. However, one thing hasn’t changed – the format that offers an incredibly budget-friendly way for dinners to experience a fabulous meal at a fraction of what they might normally pay.

To make for a complete (and safe) date night out, Arizona Restaurant Week has even partnered with Lyft offering diners either a $20 credit (for first-time users) or 20 percent off (for existing Lyft customers) to and from their ARW destinations. Regardless of where guests decide to dine, Arizona Restaurant Week establishments offer menus that represent a wide array of cultural cuisine presented in a unique way that highlights the unparalleled talent of Arizona’s local chefs. Each participating establishment offers a threecourse prix-fixe menu for just $33 or $44 per person or per couple, depending on the restaurant and its offerings. While restaurant’s regular menus are available during Arizona Restaurant Week, many of the ARW dishes are only available during this time — so it’s best to take advantage of these culinary creations while they last!

Currently, there are more than 110 restaurant locations participating in this year’s Spring ARW, and that list is continually growing. Among this number, there is a great selection of restaurants which have been involved since the event’s beginning and many are first-timers, too. Inclusive for all diners, there are vegetarian, gluten-free and other offerings specific to dietary needs available on ARW menus (and are noted online at www.arizonarestaurantweek.com).

HELLBOY

A demon-like figure must decide where his loyalties lie: with humanity and his surrogate father, or an ancient sorceress, the Blood Queen, who seeks to bring about the apocalypse.

Something clearly went wrong during development on this film. Hellboy is a movie where no one seemed to be on the same page in production. Tone clash is present everywhere in this movie. Is it a dark, edgy monster film or a Deadpool-like comedy? The editing reeks of post-production issues, with rapid cutting, continuity breaks, and even unnecessary pop music entries straight out of Suicide Squad. The script is one that is exposition over showing, not just in worldbuilding but also in character development. The movie tells us to care about the characters instead of helping us to invest in them by following their journey. The cast does little to help the situation, as David Harbour (Hellboy himself) seems like he’d rather be anywhere else. Some interesting prosthetics and Neil Marshall’s somewhat slick action direction could not save this one.

HIGH LIFE

A group of death row criminals are set on a strange journey to conduct experiments based around a black hole and procreation.

This is a very bleak and brutal film, not in violence but tone and development.

The characters, even the “good” ones like Monte (Robert Pattinson) and Tcherny (Andre Benjamin), have no hope for complete redemption. They can only sit and hope their remaining days are somewhat stable. The dark, pale cinematography is robotic and inhuman, as if we are watching security footage instead of a movie.

The performances are almost all deadpan, which works in the tone of the film, but became a bit tiring after a while. Its showcase of the human condition and how we are doomed to destroy each other will leave you thinking, though maybe not in the best mood.

The misadventures of a stoner poet named Moondog (Matthew McConaughey) on his quest to publish his novel.

Harmony Korine’s film does feel like a story taking place in a “high” world, where nothing is set in reality. Benoit Debie’s cinematography is chaotic and shaky with highly saturated colors, and the characters, even the normal ones, are all insane and rather awful people. Logic and consequences are thrown out the window. I loved every second of it. This is life on the wild side; uncensored and strangely creates a feel-good without completely glorifying the actions of the characters.

Korine’s direction is always changing, and this is some of his best work yet.
