ocated in downtown Phoenix, one local organization has been helping thousands of each women year to positively transform their lives by providing education, resources and support. Fresh Start Women’s Foundation began in 1992 as the vision of two sisters’: Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart. These two sisters wanted to help women reach their full potential through setting personal and professional goals. In 2002, the Jewell McFarland Lewis Resource Center was built as a refuge for women of all walks of life to access a wide range of services, classes, and programs designed to teach self-confidence, life skills, and career development. “We see women from every socioeconomic and cultural background, each with unique life experiences,” says President and CEO Susan Berman. “Our goal is to support each woman who comes through our doors and help her with the support and resources she needs most to take the next step on her path forward.” Women come to Fresh Start from a number of different situations. WHAT ARE THOSE HANDS ON THE LIGHT POLES? by City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture

WE’VE BEEN ASKED RECENTLY “WHAT ARE THOSE HANDS ON THE LIGHT POLES??” For those who don’t already know, “We Call This Home” is a public art project by Arizona artist Ann Morton. Fabricated from aluminum and self-sealing Corten steel, the artwork is mounted on 30 light poles along the east side of the street, between Shea Boulevard and Bell Road. “Public art is an investment in the creative life of our city, bringing artists and the community together to beautify our neighborhoods and add to the many reasons why Phoenix is a great place to live,” said city of Phoenix District 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark. “We Call This Home is a great example of how art can be both a way to build community, by letting residents take part directly in making art, and a means to help a neighborhood express its distinctive character. As the North 32 Street corridor has grown and developed over the last several years, business owners and community advocates have worked to

make 32nd Street a go-to destination for shopping, dining and fun. This art builds on that energy and excitement, and it’s a wonderful addition to the neighborhood!”

To create the artwork, the artist collected more than 1,300 handprints from community residents. She worked with SmithCraft, a local sign and metal fabricator, to turn the handprints into metal silhouettes, which will be arranged in clusters and attached to the poles. Community members involved included students at Shea Middle School, Paradise Valley Community College, and families and seniors at the Shadow Mountain Senior Center. “With the beginning of public art being woven into the fabric of our neighborhood, we are thrilled to see the continued evolution of our vibrant North 32nd neighborhood,” said Allison J Barnett, Managing Partner of North 32nd, Inc. “Ms. Morton beautifully crafted the design of this public art into something that is meaningful to the neighborhood for generations to come. Each hand represents an individual in our community, past and present. The hands were drawn at various

community events demonstrating the engagement of our community in a collaborative setting. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with future artists!” This project evolved from the North

32nd Street Corridor Community Visioning effort. It was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Arts + Culture Public Art Program with percent-for-art funds from the Street Transportation Capital Improvement Program.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT IN PHOENIX

ONCE A YEAR, IN MAY WE CELEBRATE OUR MOTHERS AND ALL THEY DO FOR US. But most moms need a pat on the back and support more than once a year – especially brand-new moms. In the first days and weeks after the birth of a child, the transition to motherhood can be very challenging. For breastfeeding moms, the Phoenix

area has a lot to offer: La Leche League to the rescue.

La Leche League is a worldwide organization that offers free breastfeeding support by phone and monthly in-person meetings. The Phoenix area has 10 meetings, held every month in different locations throughout the valley. Mothers can come to get help with breastfeeding, meet other nursing mothers and find a community of support. The Leaders are mothers who have nursed their own babies and who have received training in peer-to-peer breastfeeding support. A typical meeting includes discussion of various topics related to breastfeeding and motherhood but mostly focuses on the questions mothers ask. Many mothers have a tough time getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Other mothers have concerns about

going back to work while continuing to breastfeed. Others are looking for a community of support and they come back month after month, asking different questions as their baby grows.

Here in the valley, La Leche League offers daytime and evening meetings. All breastfeeding mothers are welcome to attend meetings and meetings are always free. Pregnant women are encouraged to attend meetings as well. La Leche League meetings can be a great way to learn about breastfeeding before your bundle of joy arrives! SUMMER JOB BECOMES LIFELONG PASSION

CAMP COUNSELORS AND VOLUNTEERS AT CAMP CIVITAN OFTEN CHANGE CAREER PLANS TO WORK WITH CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS GETTING OUT OF THE SUMMER HEAT OF PHOENIX IS A GREAT ATTRACTION FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS. Especially if the job is in the cool summer town of Williams – gateway to the Grand Canyon and home to the Bearizona Wildlife Park. For 50-years, there has been another job attraction which has changed the lives of young adults. Camp Civitan is a 10-week summer camp for children and adults with special needs. This 15-acre wheelchair accessible facility has changed lives of high school volunteers and college-age staff since 1968. It is not unusual for many of these young adults to have life-changing experiences working with individuals with developmental disabilities. Each week-long camp session offers special needs campers, some as young as 8 and as old as 65, the opportunity to make new friends, sing, dance, create art projects, do skits, visit the Canyon

or Bearizona, and so much more. The experience allows individuals to blossom and grow away from home and family routines offering the most important and much-needed respite time for the families and caregivers at home. Our campers and staff, as well, gain many new life skills which include, self-confidence, and independence. Camp Civitan programs are designed to promote positive, healthy lifestyles while building meaningful and lasting relationships. Volunteers and camp staff, share the same experiences as the campers and often find themselves looking at their future academic and career choices after a summer at Camp Civitan. “I will never forget my time at Camp Civitan, it has impacted my life forever, I view disabilities in a whole new light, my fears are gone and the friendships I’ve built will last a lifetime, I will be back,” said John, a 15-year-old camp volunteer. Many volunteers and staff look at social

service careers, special education, health care and legal professions, and other pursuits which help individuals and families thrive, many have changed college studies after just one summer! The experiences and the relationships developed with the campers build a higher level of empathy and respect for individuals and families living with special needs. On average, young college summer staff return to Camp Civitan for four summers, and many work weekends during the entire year. They don’t only return to camp for the fun and relationships with other staff and returning campers, but they these positions are also paid, on average, for the entire summer, 10-week-long sessions will earn about $6,000, not

including all meals, lodging, and all the entertainment and fun. There is no better way to spend the summer, and help pay for college, not to mention, will be the most memorable summer you will ever have. “CALL IF YOU CAN, TEXT IF YOU CAN’T” IS LIVE IN MARICOPA COUNTY THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS PROUD TO BE INVOLVED IN THE BEGINNING OF A NEW PROGRAM FOR 9-11 SERVICES; “Call if you can, text

if you can’t.” If you are in a serious situation where you are unable to call 9-1-1, you can send a text. This system is being launched in cooperation with the Maricopa Association of Governments and the Maricopa Region 9-1-1; who alongside members of the disability community, worked tirelessly to identify a solution to make Text to 9-1-1 a reality. Voice calling is always the best option, but if an individual is in a situation

where being overheard is dangerous, the texting option provides a safer alternative to contact emergency services. This new program also provides an option for those who have a disability that makes voice calling difficult or impossible, allowing them to easily and efficiently contact emergency services. The new system was purchased in 2017 and training for public safety call center personnel has been completed over the

past several months to be ready for this launch. Today, the new program is in place and users will be able to send text messages to 9-1-1. Currently, group texts and translation services are not available, and users should be aware that they will need to write in their location as text messages do not provide a location. MCSO is one of the many emergency service providers participating in the new program in Maricopa County.

PROFILE ON LOCAL BUSINESS: Kathy Rowe

MY COMPANY & TITLE IS…. Music Together in Phoenix, Center Director

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I like to start my day with 5:30 Pilates or yoga, walking my dog and tending my chickens & backyard garden. After some yummy avocado toast, I get to teach a few mornings per week, and if I am not teaching, I head into my home office. It is fun to have a few afternoons of teaching Rhythm Kids and Guitar for Grownups, and also heading out to ASU for our preschool music. In between teaching is typical office work and visiting our teacher’s classes, networking or checking on our locations. It is also super fun to go to Tuesday night’s East Coast Swing at Fatcats! It feels like every day is different, and every day is a new adventure! MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… hiking in the mountains, my friends and neighbors (32Shea, Sala, Joybus), and all the memories of raising children & chickens here. I love seeing the area get even better with our restaurants and it feels like an even closer community! MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... “Princess Bride”; I love the humor, the amazing cast of characters, and the great lines! MY FAMILY… is physically far apart (one daughter is in Colorado and one is in Australia), but we are still super

close and talk frequently. It’s fun to visit them, and when they occasionally come home. I am excited that my children are discovering who they are and exploring their possibilities!

THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… anything that involves a computer! I am lucky to get help from my husband, mentors and teachers on our staff!

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… discovering that I taught a whole morning with my shirt inside out, which I only discovered towards the end of my last class!

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… junior high band director just like the great one I had! I taught a little bit of band, and a lot of general music, and discovered that early childhood is wildly important as a foundation of all later music-making (and it’s fun)!

THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… getting up (not before the sun) and taking a long bicycle ride to a park for yoga, and then to a yummy restaurant to meet some friends, followed by a sweet massage. After arriving back home to find that some sweet elf had weeded the garden, turned the compost, and tended the chickens, I would play with my little dog for a while before heading out to lead a big HAPPY class of families, singing, dancing, drumming and jamming!! I would come home for a delicious lunch with my husband and then get to go surfing in the afternoon for a few hours (desert surfing?), followed by a bit of a ukulele jam with friends and their children. This perfect day would end with a little glass of happy hour and laughs with friends; a light dinner under the stars, and then swing dancing with my husband.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... “Tom’s Diner” (acapella)

MY FIRST JOB WAS… scooping ice cream at Baskin Robbins at the old WestTown, off I17, at the age of fifteen.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my husband, Peter! He works hard; he genuinely cares for people; he is wicked smart and can build or fix (or YouTube) anything; he is strong like ox and can swim like a dolphin; he can sleep anywhere/anytime (sometimes I don’t like this part), and he’s extra fun at parties!

MY LIFE… is fun, very full, and adventurous!

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… dark chocolate and my ukulele! Last year, I was late to catch a flight heading to Sayulita on a ‘girls trip’, and I couldn’t check my big suitcase, so I only grabbed a small beach bag of goodies and my uke as carry-on for that week. It worked!

I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… learning to harmonize and be an effective leader in my organization; I am taking voice lessons and love learning new swing dance moves with my guy. I am also learning to be a better surfer.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS... a homemade penny necklace from my husband on our 22ndAnniversary with five pennies: 1965 (my birthday), 1966 (my husband’s birthday), 1991 (our anniversary year), 1995 (our first daughter’s birthday) and 1997 (our youngest daughter’s birthday); it was so creative and thoughtful! THE ACTOR I WOULD WANT TO PLAY ME IN A MOVIE OF MY LIFE IS... Exene Cervenka (if she acted) MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE TO… travel on a sailboat around the world! MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS… I think it’s important to balance work and play! If I work too many weekends, I am not a happy teacher for my families. I love teaching and leading Music Together in Phoenix, and I also love getting to have time with family and friends!

The formula is pretty simple. When a customer writes a complaint online, review, tweet, post, etc., don’t ignore them. Respond quickly, every time, period. Your business is not where you are, it’s where your customers are…online. In a report by The Customer Experience Index in 2012 released by Forrester, 80 percent of businesses believe they are delivering superior customer service. But only 8 percent of customers believe they are. Businesses need to wake up and realize that more than likely, their customer service as a whole, online and in-store, sucks. Jay Baer, one of the top social media

consultants in the country and author of Hug Your Haters, said it best that customer service is the new marketing. All the ads in the world aren’t going to save your business if you don’t realize that you are truly in the service business. Customer expectations are low and for customers that do receive any response, it’s a pleasant surprise. When a company responds quickly, customers are blown away. I have handled thousands of reviews for Pita Jungle, Riot Hospitality Group and others and I make it a priority to respond to complaints within the hour when possible but never later than the same day. The bond is stronger when you win a customer back vs. someone who has had only a positive experience. If you find that you are resource constrained, then you may want to hire a social media/guest relations manager or use ServiceGuru’s managed services.

TIPS FOR CAMPING WITH KIDS IN ARIZONA By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

ummer is fast approaching and there is no time like the present to start planning outdoor activities and trips with your youngsters. One new activity our family plans to tackle this year is camping. We are avid hikers and love to find fun adventures around Arizona, both indoors and outdoors. But we have yet to take our daughter camping. I believe in planning ahead and finding out what the experts have to say. There are many great websites and articles on the subject, but one of my very best resources is my dear friend Carol Satran. She and her family of six are true experts on all things camping, fishing and hunting in Arizona. They spend more time enjoying camping and the outdoors with their kids than anyone I know!

CAROL SHARED HER BEST TIPS FOR CAMPING WITH KIDS: • Start taking the kids camping when they are young. This makes a lot of sense – camping means that your kids are in a completely different environment with different habits, times and amenities. Be sure you prepare your kids for being outside in different types of weather and have a lot of patience as they learn and adapt to a new environment. • Involve everyone in packing. This includes packing beforehand, setting up the campsite, breaking camp and putting camping gear away when you get home. Getting your kids involved in the packing and unpacking process helps them be a part of the whole camping experience. Kids want to be involved and including them in packing and unpacking keeps them interested and helps them learn the ins and outs of camping. • Bring cards, a checker game and a

board game or two to play. It’s important to be prepared for the inevitable changes in plans and these activities are always handy on a rainy afternoon (especially at places like Big Lake in July). • Bring bicycles. Carol’s kids love riding their bikes at Big Lake and around other camping areas across the state (we love to ride at the Grand Canyon). It’s great entertainment and a quick, easy alternative to hiking longer distances. • Bring your best trivia, stories and games. Sitting around the campfire sharing stories or playing games (for example, the alphabet game naming animals) is a fun way to pass the time and enjoy spending time with your family. Carol’s family also loves to play the Alaska trivia game, since they have been there so many times. • Don’t forget the S’mores! Of course this goes without saying.

It’s one of the many campgrounds in the Coconino National Forest and is about 5 miles north of Blue Ridge Reservoir. Wet Beaver Creek Campground Located east of Sedona, near Camp Verde, the Wet Beaver Creek Campground is open year round. several campgrounds in the area. Many of the trails lead right into the heart of Sedona, and fantastic archeological sites are plentiful. Her family also loves many of the campsites between Cottonwood and Sedona, camping at Lake Powell, sites outside of Flagstaff, and Dogtown Lake near Williams, AZ. And don’t forget to check out Arizona State Parks and one of the many National Parks in our state. Both have fantastic resources, great campgrounds and really good information about camping on their websites. Before you head out to go camping, take time to prepare for your trip. Pack all of the food, clothing and equipment you will need. Watch the weather and pack appropriate clothing and gear. Stay in designated areas, pack out all of your garbage and keep your cell phone handy for emergencies. Make sure your kids understand the rules for camping, hiking and the outdoors, and check the local websites for your campground to look for alerts or special announcements. THE HONORS PROGRAM AT PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

n addition to the 30-year anniversary of Paradise Valley Community College, the PVCC Honors Program also celebrates its first 30 years. Shadow Mountain High School and Accelerated Learning Center have many students who attend PVCC, but few seem to know about the Presidents’ Honors Scholarship which provides all Maricopa County high school students who graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher and test into college level classes with two free years of tuition. Due to its close proximity to the North 32nd corridor, PVCC provides an opportunity for students to stay closely connected to the community they grew up in. The Honors Program at PVCC takes it one step further by providing those students the chance to challenge themselves with a unique college experience while being supported with scholarship and a close-knit community. The program

also pushes them to grow in areas of leadership, research, communication and critical thinking all the while enjoying the intimate feel of a small college. Alexis Peterson, a Shadow Mountain High School graduate, transferred to PVCC after overhearing about the Honors Program’s tuition scholarship in her high school pre-calculus class. After high school, she was nervous and undecided about what to do. “I turned down a tuition scholarship to NAU because PVCC was close to home and from the first time I stepped on campus, I knew that I was making the right decision,” said Peterson. She attributes PVCC with giving her so many leadership and learning opportunities, many of which she would never have the opportunity to experience if going straight into ASU from high school. “I got to start my own leadership club, learned to facilitate training programs,

took on leadership roles in the Honors Program, earned additional scholarships through the help of faculty mentors and even got to share my ideas at the National Collegiate Honors Conference,” said Peterson. The Honors Program is designed to empower students to achieve whatever their goals may be. The majority of Honors graduates transfer to a university to pursue baccalaureate degrees in various subjects such as business, nursing, biology, accounting, education, political science and public health. Honors encourages a sense of community on campus by having a designated honors space, taking new honors students on the Honors Retreat, and offering exciting Honors Explore Classes. These classes include traveling up to Flagstaff, taking a hike down the Grand Canyon, and travelling

up to NAU to do a high-ropes course. Students also have had the opportunity to present their research at the Western Regional Honors Conference in places such as California and Oregon. Many of the Honors students have gone on to win the prestigious All-USA scholarship to pay for 2-years’ worth of classes at any of the big 3 in-state universities. AZGFD REMINDS RESIDENTS NOT TO FEED WILDLIFE

REMINDER FOR PUBLIC TO KEEP WILDLIFE WILD AFTER JAVELINA BITE RESIDENTS IN SEPARATE SEDONA INCIDENTS

he Game and Fish Department reminds everyone to stop feeding wildlife following two recent javelina attacks near Sedona. Both attacks were the result of people feeding javelina at their homes. On Feb. 5, Game and Fish received information that a 79-year-old woman was bitten by a javelina in a neighborhood southwest of Sedona. The attack occurred at around 4 p.m. at the woman’s residence, where she received severe bite wounds to her leg as she tried to stop the javelina from attacking her dogs. A responding Game and Fish wildlife officer confirmed the woman was intentionally feeding a herd of javelina at her home. The victim was treated in Sedona and released. The second incident occurred on Feb 25. The department received information that an elderly man was bitten by

a javelina in Oak Creek Village as he was feeding a herd of javelina in his backyard. When food wasn’t provided quickly enough, one of the animals became aggressive and bit the man in the leg. He was treated at a local emergency room in Sedona and released. The victim has been going through the preventative rabies shot series.

and a concern for possible rabies. A javelina tested positive for rabies in Sedona approximately eight months ago.

These incidents placed the department in a very difficult position where it had to act immediately and consequently contracted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to conduct lethal removal of the javelina within a quarter-mile radius of the victims’ residences.

“The Game and Fish department strongly discourages feeding wildlife other than birds and tree squirrels,” said Scott Poppenberger, Arizona Game and Fish Department Flagstaff regional supervisor. “Wildlife feeding frequently creates dangerous situations for both wildlife and people, often setting the stage for attacks.” As wildlife are fed by people, they lose their natural fear of humans and become dependent on unnatural food sources. Feeding places the person feeding, their neighbors and the wildlife at risk.

The decision to lethally remove the animals was based on the attacks, an imminent public safety threat created by intentional feeding, the habituation and loss of fear to humans by the javelina,

SUNSHINE MUSIC TOGETHER CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY

n April 14, 2018, dozens of local families gathered at the Irish Cultural Center for a concert to celebrate nineteen years of offering the awardwinning early childhood music program to families in Phoenix. The concert, which featured Music Together recording artist “Uncle Gerry” Dignan, was held as a benefit a Caring Coalition AZ, a local grassroots organization that provides nutrition to low income families in the Phoenix area, https://www.caringcoalitionaz.org $800 was raised, which will go towards providing care packages of food for families on weekends. According to Music Together in Phoenix Director Summer Kathy Rowe, “We are so proud that Music Together in Phoenix has been a place where more than 9600 families

ome Fur Good Animal Rescue and Placement (HFG), located at 10220 North 32nd St, south of Shea Blvd, is a nonprofit, no kill shelter. HFG’s mission is to eliminate euthanasia of treatable, adoptable cats and dogs in Maricopa County through placements, promotion of spay/neuter, medical care and increased community awareness. In 2017 this small rescue placed over 500 cats and dogs in their “furever” homes!

HFG rescues dogs from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, primarily from the euthanasia list. Many of the dogs come in with medical issues. HFG does take in cats from the public. Prior to adoption all rescues are examined by a vet, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Cats are also FELV/FIV tested. If needed, a medical treatment plan is put into place and funds are raised for larger surgeries. HFG also works with trainers to assess and correct behavioral issues.

HFG also has a new low cost dental clinic open to the community. Bloodwork is required prior to the dental ($75). The actual cleaning/scaling and polishing is $250 and extractions are additional. Digital x-rays are available. Dentals are done each Wednesday and are by appointment only. Call (602) 509-6620 for more information regarding dental procedures.

Adoption fees range from $300 for a puppy to $150 for an older dog; cats are $85 and kittens $100. On occasion HFG has “guardian angel” dogs or cats, which command a higher fee. HFG does not have a time limit on the length of stay. Additionally, HFG

HFG operates a low-cost vaccine and microchip clinic, open to the public, each Sunday from 11am to 2:30pm. It is a walk-in clinic, so no appointment needed! Heartworm and FELV/ FIV tests for cats are also available. Vaccines are $20 each and microchips are $32. No charge for the vet exam.

spring and fall months than in the summer. Even when it’s 70 degrees outside, the inside of a car can rise above 115 degrees in less than an hour. On a beautiful 80-degree day, your dog can start to suffer heat stroke in less than 30 minutes inside your car. Mitigate heat exhaustion risks by walking early in the morning or late at night, carrying plenty of water for your pet, never leaving your dog in the car, and looking for warning signs of heat exhaustion. If your pet is excessively panting, lethargic, or has bright red or blue gums, immediately stop outdoor activities and slowly cool your pet down to avoid heat stroke. You may need to also seek veterinary assistance, as heat stroke is an emergency situation.

ith a fur coat and limited cooling mechanisms, dogs can overheat in weather that many people think is a gorgeous Arizona day. Dr. Rebecca Bukowy of MD Petcare has seen more cases of heat exhaustion during the

GOT THAT SPF? Thick coats of fur may overheat your dog, but short-coated dogs can suffer even bigger problems: skin cancer. Short or white coats, like on bully breeds, does not protect their skin from UV rays very well, which can cause different forms of skin cancer. Use a children’s or dog-friendly sunscreen, which is made for more sensitive skin, and avoid using an aerosolized sunscreen. Thick liquid sunscreens can be rubbed into their fur and onto their skin. A word of caution: make sure your dog doesn’t lick it off; it can make them sick. A quick rinse will wash off any excess at the end of your outdoor activities and keep them cool! WATER ACTIVITIES If you’re looking to have outdoor fun with your dog as temps rise, think about games with a kiddie pool. Found at most stores for less than $20, small pools can fit on apartment patios and provide endless fun for your pup on a hot day. Find some healthy snacks around the house, such as carrots or apple slices, and throw them into the pool. Hunting for snacks in the water and using their problem-solving skills will mentally stimulate your dog, which is as important as physical exercise. Throw their favorite toys into the

pool for a splashy game of fetch or wet their fur to cool them down. It may be the best $20 you spend all summer on your dog. ESCAPE THE HEAT, BUT NOT THE TICKS As more people and their four-legged family members escape up north for cooler temperatures, they may not realize they are exposing their dogs to hungry, disease-carrying ticks. The majority of dog owners in the valley do not use flea and tick treatment on their pets, but a simple monthly treatment can save them what could be thousands of dollars in medical bills. Tick fever, tick paralysis and blood borne diseases carried by ticks can infect your dog during one of your weekend outings in the woods. Some of these diseases are fatal but can be easily avoided with a pill or cream every month. Even outside of the summer months, owners should continue the treatments. One of the worst cases of tick borne illnesses at MD PetCare was a dog who lived in the Valley and never went farther than his backyard.

IF IT’S TOO HOT FOR YOUR HAND… Even if the temperature feels nice enough for a walk, asphalt can retain a lot of heat after sunset. Use the back of your hand to feel the ground. If you can’t leave the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s feet. If the air temperature is in the 70’s and 80’s, asphalt in the sun can be over 120 degrees, which can cause skin damage on the bottom of their paws. Booties are an option, but they do take extra training and should not be used as an answer to walking your dog when the outside temperature is too hot. With the above safety tips, you and your dog can survive the Arizona summer with ease! WHY SUMMER CAMPS MATTER An Open Letter from Coach Matt Skinner

ith all the changes our society is going through, it’s important for youth development programs such as summer camps to continue serving young people and their families. Summer camp is supposed to be fun, there’s no doubt. In fact, one of the first questions parents ask as they’re picking up their child is “did you have fun?!” The answer’s almost always a resounding “yes!” Summer camps are generally pretty good at “fun”. But there’s a greater value to summer camps than just being fun. They’re a place for personal growth. Campers learn the value of working with others. They learn the value of building meaningful relationships, appreciating respect, and developing decision-making skills. All of these life skills nurture independence and confidence, building a foundation which they’ll use to grow for the rest of his life. Summer camps are an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of the human character. A place where they can make friends in person rather than online. A place where children are encouraged to try new things and to challenge their understanding of who they are and who they want to become. Each and every camp is different. Yet they all share a common goal: to support the development of our youth. They are wholesome, inclusive environments that add a spark of magic to a child’s summer. And each individual’s experience at camp is unique. Kids will learn from a full range of emotions and human experiences including homesickness, friendship, disagreements, team work, frustrations, jubilant success, and more. As the Director of Member Experience at Black Rock Bouldering Gym, it’s my responsibility to lead the development of our youth programs with a higher goal of preparing our kids to be productive, independent, and capable young adults. To thrive in any capacity. Our summer camp offers a way for kids to start developing these skills in the best possible environment. I’m always a little sad when our summer camp program ends, but I’m inspired by the fact I had the opportunity to help steer our campers in the direction of becoming healthier and more independent, curious, confident, and capable people. And I consider myself lucky to have the chance to catch up with them when they come back into the gym during the school year. If ever there was a time when the world needed a generation of future leaders who understood the complex nuances of living in a rapidly-changing community, appreciating the value of others, and being open to experiencing things differently — that time is now. hen Sarah O’Connor was at her lowest, she discovered she could be at her strongest.

Sarah is the founder and owner of Empower Wellness Studio. Located at 32nd Street and Shea Boulevard, this facility isn’t your typical fitness and wellness center. Sometimes, though, we need help getting there, and this is the place. To truly understand what’s special about this place, you need to first understand what’s special about Sarah. Many of us have walked down the same insidious path of insecurity that she has. Like her, we’ve fought to survive. Sometimes, just surviving has been our greatest victory. But Sarah’s here to share the message that we don’t need to just survive—we can thrive together. Yes, there will be bad days, but when we love ourselves and share a community of love and support with other women, everyday can be a beautiful and healthy day. In order to write this story, I spent time with Sarah at her Studio. She’s awesome; there’s no better adjective to describe her. She’s fought off the demons who chased her by taking control of her life and practicing what she calls “SelfCare.” To practice “Self-Care” simply means to take care of yourself first. “Self-Care” comes in many ways, and Sarah has strived to bring some of her favorite ways all under one roof. She believes if you take care of yourself and be your best self, then you can be your best for others. I listened to Sarah’s incredible story. She says she doesn’t see herself as inspirational, but she is. When I first started to write this article, I realized that her story wasn’t mine to tell. She loves sharing her message with people; it’s the reason she started her business. So, with that in mind, I will hint at her background to give you, my readers, a sense of how fabulous she is. For most of her life, Sarah battled health and weight issues. Her health issues combined with the medications she took caused her to gain weight. The extra weight she carried made exercise painful for her; in turn, being inactive

caused her to gain more weight. More weight caused her to struggle with body image issues. Life was a vicious cycle. What she was doing wasn’t making her feel better. In reality, her treatment was only exacerbating her conditions. Sarah realized there had to be a better way to get healthy. What was she missing? Then it hit her. She had to start moving—that was the first and key component. Sarah began her journey by literally taking one step at a time powering through her pain. Sarah is the first to admit she’s not a licensed fitness or wellness expert. However, she’s a smart business woman, and she’s assembled a team of experts who are licensed in their field and will provide you with their best so you can reach and be your best. She is just a woman who found a way to make herself happy by taking care of herself and learning what she was made of inside. Sarah’s hope is that other women will take those same steps, take their own journey and find out what they are made of, too. If you’re ready to take the first step, then start your journey today.

NEW MEDICARE CARDS ARE ON THEIR WAY!

ere is valuable information you need to know about your new Medicare card, and ways to avoid related scams:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is currently mailing new Medicare ID cards through April 2019, as part of an effort from CMS to help protect the beneficiary’s identity and to prevent fraud. The new card is free and will have a unique, 11-character combination of letters and numbers randomly assigned to you, that has no connection to your other personal data. It will still be red, white, and blue, but will not include your Social Security number or other information that could compromise your identity. The mailing process won’t cost you anything. It is expected to take up to a year and will be done at various times throughout the country. Don’t be surprised if your card arrives at a different time than your spouse, friend, or neighbor. In Arizona, the new cards are expected to begin being mailed after June 2018.

When the new card arrives, shred your old card and begin using your new card immediately. It’s important that you provide your hospital, doctor, pharmacist, and/or other health care provider with the new card when you need medications, hospital, medical, or any other health services. If you do not have your new card with you when it is needed, the provider may be able to look up your Medicare number online. It’s important to note that the card is proof that you have Medicare coverage. As far as your current Medicare coverage, it should not be affected, and benefits will remain unchanged. Your current insurance ID cards should also not change or be reissued because of this transition; keep both your new Medicare card and your insurance ID card. If your address is up to date, then the you don’t need to do anything before the cards are mailed; it will automatically be sent to you. If you want to ensure that your address is correct, or if you need to make a change, you can contact the Social Security Administration Office (which will be preparing and mailing the cards) at ssa.gov/myaccount or you may call 800-772-1213. There are scammers with new tactics who have already targeted people and tried to trick them into sharing their personal information. CMS will not call a beneficiary for private or personal information in order for you to get your new Medicare number and/or card. north32ndnews.com
