By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they
need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. North 32nd Street Corridor Project Update Contributed by the City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department THE CITY OF PHOENIX STREET TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT IS IN THE EARLY STAGES OF DESIGN FOR A PROJECT THAT WILL MAKE PEDESTRIAN AND ROADWAY SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NORTH 32ND STREET CORRIDOR. This project was originally focused on the section of North 32nd Street between East Shea Boulevard and East Cholla Street, but the boundary was recently expanded to include East Cheryl Drive to East Cholla Street. The primary features for this project will be the addition of non-continuous landscaped medians with turn pockets to prevent collisions and guide traffic. On February 17, the department held a virtual public meeting to discuss in-the-works design illustrations with the community. Ongoing design and project planning will address the following items: • Right sizing the roadway for current and anticipated traffic volumes. • Widening sidewalks for pedestrian safety. • Reconfiguring dedicated bike lanes. • Increasing the landscape elements along the corridor. The Street Transportation Department is also working to have a public art component included. This year on National Burrito Day, celebrated on April 7, an integral community partnership between 32 Shea and Civitan Foundation highlights an organization that is enhancing the quality of life for children and adults with developmental disabilities. 32 Shea partners with Civitan Foundation to provide opportunities through its Adult Life Learning Program. Program participants help with prep for 32 Shea’s famous breakfast burritos that the community loves. The famous New Mexico burrito features egg, potatoes, cheese, avocado, bacon, and is finished with homemade green salsa. This salsa is a number one request for the restaurant to begin bottling
because of its popularity in the neighborhood. It may also now be a favorite menu item because of the community ties. “For 32 Shea, our mission is to always support local faces and happy places, so partnering with groups that our guests are passionate about is what we aim to achieve,” says Janeth Moore, Director of Operations for 32 Shea. Through Civitan’s Adult Life Learning Program, members can take culinary and nutrition instruction at its facility. This program teaches its members about food preparation and safety, well-balanced meals, proper use of cooking utensils, developing recipes, and gardening. The program also has fully accessible garden beds for members to help with planting, growing, and caring for many of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen. 32 Shea has been partnering with Civitan

North 32nd Business Owner Launches Arts-Based Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Assault New local monthly group begins April 24 By Michelle Talsma Everson APRIL IS NATIONAL SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION AND AWARENESS MONTH, A DEVASTATING TOPIC THAT IMPACTS ALL OF US. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women in the United States have experienced completed or attempted rape during their lifetime; and nationwide, 81% of women reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. To help local victims of sexual assault in their recovery, North Phoenix business owner and sexual assault survivor Heidi Koffman is launching a new creative healing support group for adult women survivors of sexual assault. “Six years ago, after I was sexually assaulted, the one thing I needed was a creative outlet for healing and a support group dedicated to women survivors of sexual assault,” Koffman, who owns Craft Nights, a North 32nd arts and crafts stu-
dio, explains. “I couldn’t find one easily. I’m hoping to change that with the creation of Art in the Afternoon, a support group for adult women healing from sexual assault. We meet monthly so we don’t feel alone and have an opportunity to heal from trauma through art and creativity.” The first meeting of Art in the Afternoon will take place on Sunday, April 24 from 3-5:30 p.m., and all third Sundays of the month after the initial date. (It does not initially take place on the third Sunday of April due to the Easter holiday. The May date is May 22, and so forth.) The new monthly event takes place at Grounded 32, located at 13651 N. 32nd Street. The event is free to participate, but donations are welcome. Koffman is partnering with two local nonprofits to help propel the monthly event: Grounded 32, which provides the meeting space, and the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, which will
be providing pamphlets and resources for additional help survivors may need. Craft Nights and Grounded 32 will be providing the art supplies for each monthly project. Tickets are on sale now for their upcoming Casino Royale fundraiser on Saturday, April 23. The event will include entertainment, culinary delights, and cocktails to raise funds that will support single parent families battling cancer. The evening will include casino games, raffles, prizes and other
opportunities to win big for a cause. The event will take place at The Singletons’ newly opened H.U.B at 2832 E. Bell Road from 6-10 p.m. There are many ticket packages available for this fundraiser. The Club Player ticket package includes $100 in playing chips and two drink tickets for $50. The 007 VIP Player ticket package includes $700 in playing chips, two drink tickets, and five raffle tickets for $100. Add-ons include $50 in chips for $20 and $250 in chips for $60. All of the money raised will go to support The Singletons. The organization will also launch its “Gimme Five” reoccurring donation initiative next month to coincide with the nonprofit’s 16th anniversary. Although contributions of all sizes are welcomed, the program provides a way to donate starting at the cost of a cup of coffee. WHEN YOU HEAR ABOUT ALL THESE PEOPLE MAKING GREATER PHOENIX THEIR NEW HOME, DO YOU WONDER WHERE THEY ARE MOVING FROM? TOP MIGRATION SOURCES FOR GREATER PHOENIX The U.S. Census Bureau recently released data covering five years of migration patterns from its 2020 American Community Survey.
Topping the list for new Phoenicians was the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California metro area. More people moved into Greater Phoenix from L.A. than the entire population of El Mirage. Just about 38,000 Angelinos chose to make Phoenix their new home. The more than 11,600 people moving north from Tucson put that metro second on the list. Asian countries were the third largest group, with over 10,500 people moving to Phoenix, almost the same number as
the combined total of Central American, Mexican and Canadian immigrants coming to the Valley.
The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes counties in Indiana and Wisconsin, was the fourth largest contributor of new residents, with almost 8,000 people leaving Lake Michigan snow for Sonoran Desert sunshine. Central America (not including Mexico) ranked fifth, adding nearly 7,000 people to the Greater Phoenix population. Other metropolitan areas rounding out the top ten include Seattle, San Diego and Riverside, California, Flagstaff, and the combined totals from Mexico and Canada (the Census Migration Report does not separate the countries but instead combines them as “Northern America”). None of these migration patterns comes as a surprise to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoenix is a city full of opportunity. People come here to improve their lives,” she says. “Large
businesses are finding we have welltrained professionals in key industries like biosciences, engineering, and green energy. Small businesses are finding the support and resources they need to grow and thrive. Our new neighbors like the job opportunities, the accessible outdoor life, and the kind of welcoming neighborhoods that make them feel right at home.”
ARIZONA CONTINUES FAST POPULATION GROWTH Even though the 2020 Decennial Census numbers have hardly been digested, the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2021 state population estimates on December 21, 2021. The new data suggests that Arizona grew by nearly 100,000 people in 2021 over 2020, making the state the third fastest growing in the nation. Arizona continues to rank fourteenth nationally in population. Over the last three national census counts, seven out of ten new Arizonans moved into Greater Phoenix, a percentage that has increased each decade.

He left the event wondering how venues could utilize those seats and help service members – and the concept of the Veteran Tickets Foundation (Vet Tix) was born. Vet Tix is a 501(C)(3) national nonprofit with the sole mission to give something back to those who dedicated so much

to our country. Focareto is the CEO and founder of the organization that started in his garage and now has two dozen employees. Vet Tix provides tickets to a variety of events to current and past members of the armed services. This service helps to reduce stress, strengthen family bonds, build life-long memories, and encourages service members and veterans to stay engaged with their local communities and civilian life. The organization serves over 1.8 million “VetTixers,” those who receive the tickets, which includes all branches of the military, national guard, and reserve, all honorably discharged veterans, and immediate family of those killed in action. In 2014, the organization expanded and began serving and distributing tickets to the first responder community through its 1st Tix branch. In all, Vet Tix has distributed over 11.4 million tickets to veterans across the United States since its inception, garnering over 700,000 testimonials from grateful ticket recipients. VetTixers are able to attend a variety of events, including professional and collegiate sporting events, concerts, performing arts programs, educational and family events, and more.
The organization was on track to have their biggest year yet of ticket distribution in 2020 after distributing over 3 million tickets in 2019. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic halted their momentum, due to the complete pause of events worldwide. Thankfully, Vet Tix has been able to rapidly build back the momentum they had going into 2020 with sporting events, concerts and more becoming available. The organization was able to distribute over 1.6 million tickets in 2021 and is on track to have a big year in ticket distribution in 2022. At Vet Tix, veterans sign up for free to become a member and, after a verifying
service confirms their record, they will get emails, or they can visit the website to see ticket openings in their area. If they can secure the tickets, they have to pay a small delivery fee per transaction to receive their tickets but the tickets themselves are free of charge. Vet Tix’s main donors consist of teams, promoters, venue managers, organizations, individuals, season ticket holders, corporations and entertainers. Anyone can donate their tickets on Vet Tix’s website. There is also the option to donate financially to the organization and 100% of every dollar that is donated goes back into the ticket programs at Vet Tix. Paradise Valley Education Association Brings Back Prom Boutique Community Members Encouraged to Donate to Help Students By Gretchen Pahia Photo Courtesy of Paradise Valley Education Association HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE PARADISE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (PVSCHOOLS) ARE GETTING READY FOR PROM SEASON. Knowing that this milestone occasion can add a financial burden on students and their families, the Paradise Valley Education Association (PVEA) is partnering with the community to open the Prom Boutique back up so that students can attend the annual soiree without breaking the bank. Leah Knaeble is the Dean of Students for Desert Shadows and Explorer Middle Schools. She is also a member of the PVEA and says the group is trying to fill a void that is needed in the community by re-establishing this successful event. “We are collecting gently used items to give to our students for prom,” she explains. “We always have a great need for men’s items such as suits, shoes, socks, and other formal wear. We are always looking for formal dresses in sizes 14 to 24 but we accept all sizes for dresses, shoes, makeup samples, clutch purses, and more.”

The Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council Honors Local Businessman with Distinguished Award

he Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council (GCC), an independent nonprofit organization chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Arizona, recently awarded wellknown businessman and local resident Dave Alexander the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award (DESA).

The award is presented to Eagle Scouts who have built a distinguished career while establishing a strong record of volunteer service in their communities. The DESA is the National Eagle Scout Association’s highest honor an Eagle Scout can achieve.
In November 2021, Alexander matched the totality of funds raised by GCC during their Friends of Scouting Campaign. The campaign funds help provide character development, citizenship training, and leadership skills to Arizona youth. Alexander’s challenge grant matched helped GCC raise more than $311,000 on the National Day of Giving – the most every raised by Scouting in one day in Arizona. These funds help GCC support and grow Scouting throughout Arizona daily.
Nominees must have earned the Eagle Scout rank through the BSA at least 25 years prior to be considered for the award. Alexander achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1959 and credits many of the successes in his personal and professional life to the lessons Scouting taught him. Alexander is the founder and managing member of Caljet, one of the largest independent motor fuels terminals in the United States. The company has been recognized as one of the best places to work in Arizona and is an acknowledged industry leader in innovation, workplace safety, and community support.

My sister and I used to do the same thing growing up. THE PERFECT DAY… Would start with a cup of coffee with frothed oat milk at home followed by a breakfast burrito from 32 Shea. I would then enjoy a hike in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with my Irish Goldendoodle, Harper. I also would love to spend some time in my backyard vegetable garden and maybe a family bike ride. The afternoon would be spent hanging on the front patio with neighbors while all the kids from the street run around. A family dinner followed by game night or a movie would be the best way to end a perfect day.
MY LIFE IS… Busy but full of joy. We are a busy family and life seems to get busier each year. I cherish the quiet time when we have it. We make sure to take the time to have days with no activities and just hang at home, get out in nature, and find a healthy balance in life. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… After the past two years, I just want to travel. I want to show my kids the world, experience different cultures, and explore. This past summer we took the girls on their first big road trip. We explored Yosemite National Park, the Redwood Forest, and the Oregon coast. They are great travelers, so we are looking forward to many more adventures in the future. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... Is to set personal boundaries. As a small business owner, it can be difficult to fully take time off without worrying about the business, my patients, and my to-do list. Over the past two years I have worked with a business coach to help me organize my life, my business, and to set boundaries with home and work.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… I have a very close friend whose family started Camp Patrick (camppatrick.com). It is a wonderful organization that raises money to take kids with Spina Bifida to camp. Another favorite local nonprofit is One n Ten (onenten.org). SKIN CONDITIONS: Skin conditions are very common in my practice, especially for children. Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions I see in children and can last throughout adulthood. Typically, this appears once food is introduced. When there is a skin condition, one of the first places we investigate is the digestive system. We focus on healing the gut by balancing the gut flora. Food sensitivities can also be a cause of skin conditions and we explore those by elimination of highly allergenic foods or food sensitivity testing. Other skin conditions, such as acne, can also be supported in similar ways with additional focus on hormone balancing and diet changes. DIGESTION: Gastrointestinal support is staple for all ages in naturopathic medicine; however, it can be an important part of pediatric support. Many children struggle with constipation, stomach pain and diarrhea.
We investigate the root cause of any digestive upset. We focus on diet as food allergies and sensitivities can play an important role is constipation or stomach pain. I
n the United States, thousands of children are diagnosed with heart problems each year. There are two main types of heart problems in children – congenital and acquired. One of the best ways to keep ahead of any lurking, undiagnosed heart issues is to do regular screening with electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram (ultrasound) testing. And for more than two decades, one Valley resident has been taking measures to ensure that no other children nor their families suffer from losses endured due to heart problems. Local resident Sharon Bates knows the pain of pediatric heart issues all too well. Her only child, Anthony, died suddenly of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), also known as an enlarged heart. He was a seemingly healthy college athlete who’d gone under extensive physicals throughout most of his life, but his disease was never detected because EKGs are not required in youth physicals. In the more than twenty years since Anthony’s death, Sharon and her supporters have been on a mission to do everything they can to promote health and heart awareness through the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF). The foundation’s mission is to provide cardiac screenings for anyone ages 10 and up who need them. “There is a huge gap in our medical system,” Sharon explains. “Medical professionals chase symptoms but, like in Anthony’s case, we had no family history and no cardiac symptoms. Health insurance doesn’t cover heart exams for children unless there are symptoms and, in cases such as my son’s, the only symptom was sudden cardiac death, and it was just too late by that time.” Symptoms of cardiac issues amongst kids that parents can watch for include dizziness, shortness of breath,

chest pain, fainting, fatigue, blacking out, palpitations, or a racing heart. The problem is these symptoms are common among teenagers so medical treatment may not be immediately sought. That is where ABF comes in. “We provide comprehensive cardiac tests that include a two page health history questionnaire, blood pressure checks, EKG and ultrasound, or echocardiogram,” Sharon says. “The screening tests are reviewed by cardiologists who volunteer their time to help all the participants.” When asked what she thought Anthony would think of the work the foundation was doing, she says, “He would be super excited about the effort we do in his honor. He was an Eagle Scout and always put others first in his mind and his heart. I am truly blessed to have been his mother.” The foundation advocates for better heart healthcare for youth and the work they do not only helps educate but saves lives. Their team has screened more than 16,250 youth hearts and have diagnosed more than 2,220 heart issues. Of those issues, more than 400 lives have been saved thanks to the work of the ABF. et out your pencil and paper and take note of some of the latest news items from Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVSchools). SHADOW MOUNTAIN HIGH CEREMONY ACTIVATES SPACE FORCE JROTC PROGRAM
Shadow Mountain High School embarks on a historic designation. The school is one of only 10 high schools’ Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) selected as the inaugural cohort of high school Space Force JROTC detachments. To commemorate this monumental milestone, 82 cadets recently attended an Air Force Deactivation, Space Force Activation Ceremony, and a Space Force Lapel Pin Ceremony. The Space Force JROTC program will commence on May 12. To prepare, Shadow Mountain cadets have received new uniform items identifying the unit as a new JROTC unit. New uniforms and a new curriculum focused on Space Force principles, mission objectives, and policies will be implemented in the next few years. Space Force JROTC is still in the developmental phase of establishing mission objectives, but a focus on STEM principles is expected. The U.S. Space Force was created in December 2019 and is the sixth branch of the United States military. PARADISE VALLEY VARSITY BOYS SOCCER TEAM HONORED WITH THE AIA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Paradise Valley High School’s Boys Varsity Soccer Team was recently
awarded the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Sportsmanship Award. This prestigious award is given to a team that demonstrates extraordinary sportsmanship during the season. “This award is a huge honor and means so much to our team and program. Our program strives to win games and play good soccer, but we want our players to leave our program with qualities that will allow them to be successful later in life,” says Coach Brett Bowman. “This award is a direct result of the efforts my coaching staff and I put in to train these young men in soccer and life. Whether we win or lose, we want our teams to play with integrity and show good sportsmanship. The coaching staff and I would like to thank this class of seniors for setting the standard for future teams as we continue to build up young men who will be successful beyond their time in our program.” SHADOW MOUNTAIN JUNIOR WINS AIA DIVISION III WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Congratulations to Luke Isaak, a junior at Shadow Mountain High School, for winning the 2022 Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Division III Wrestling Championship at 190 pounds. “The hard work paid off, and the work showed with this win. It was an awesome end to the season,” says Luke. He ended the season with an impressive 34-1 record. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.
HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.

Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.

It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

“Studio 666” The Foo Fighters move into an old mansion to complete their new album, only to discover the remains of its dark past. This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds
