Modified Movement to Open New Yoga Studio in North 32nd Photos by Be Peachie (bepeachie.com) ASHLEY SAYALOUNE, FOUNDER OF MODIFIED MOVEMENT, IS EXPANDING HER PRACTICE AND OPENING UP A YOGA STUDIO TO HELP MORE LOCALS FIND RELIEF FROM CHRONIC SYMPTOMS THROUGH MOVEMENT. The Modified Movement yoga studio will be open for business in mid-May on the corner of Shea and the 51 at 3241 E. Shea Boulevard, #7, next to Craft Nights.
MODIFIED MOVEMENT Therapeutic Yoga | Corrective Exercise
Your personal movement expert
“Modified Movement will be more than your average yoga studio,” Sayaloune shares. She explains that she has created classes that modify a classical yoga practice to make them accessible for those that are struggling with chronic illness and painful movement. Through methodical sequences and the use of a variety of yoga props she is able to make yoga not only more approachable, but also a tool to find relief from chronic symptoms. There will be a variety of small classes offered
weekly specific to ailments of the upper and lower body, arthritis, menopause and cancer care, to name a few. New classes will be added on a continious basis.
“My goal is to help more people that have been hesitant to join a movement program due to their limitations,” Sayaloune says. “For many patients, after injury and/or treatment, their doctor will recommend that they start off with something like yoga,” she adds. “What they don’t tell you is: what kind of yoga, where to go, who knows enough to keep you safe, and who cares enough to keep you safe while you complete your journey of healing? The answer: I care enough. My primary goal is to help you build back both strength and confidence in your body while reducing pain and fatigue. This is the kind of therapy your doctor had in mind when she recommended you try yoga.” To help put clients at ease, Sayaloune adds that she will be keeping class sizes small and will be taking every precaution to ensure a sanitary space to practice yoga amid the spread of COVID-19. The City of Phoenix Approves Funding to Make Streets Safer; A Roadway Safety Action Plan In The Works MAYOR KATE GALLEGO AND MEMBERS OF THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL HAVE RECENTLY APPROVED A NEW, MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR INVESTMENT TO MAKE PHOENIX STREETS SAFER TO WALK, BIKE, AND DRIVE. “The current rate of traffic crashes and pedestrian and driver fatalities is too high,” says Mayor Gallego. “This is not a new subject for us – we created an Office of Pedestrian Safety in 2018, but that is only one part of a comprehensive safety plan. The allocated funds will help save lives and get this problem under control.”
of injury and fatality crashes. Although it could take a year to develop the full plan, short-term actions can now be implemented quickly. Those actions include additional street signage, roadway striping, and cutting back vegetation that intrudes onto the roadway. Mid-term and longer-term projects can include new pavement,
new traffic signals and reconstruction of particularly dangerous intersections. The mayor pointed out that the city has already completed extensive work to improve safety, including the installation of 68 HAWK signals (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk signals – the flashing red lights that cause drivers to stop when
a pedestrian is crossing the roadway). Plans call for the city to increase these installations to an additional ten to fifteen HAWK signals each year. The city’s Streets Transportation Department operates 1,158 traffic signals throughout the 520-square mile geographic area of the city of Phoenix. For more information, visit phoenix.gov.
The investment includes the allocation of $3 million in Street Transportation Department’s Transportation 2050 funds; $3 million in General Funds over five years; and five additional staff positions funded by Arizona Highway User Revenue Funds. “There are too many pedestrian fatalities and vehicular collisions occurring on Phoenix streets—and we are committed to finding ways to better protect pedestrians and drivers,” says Councilwoman Debra Stark. “This new investment and comprehensive approach are important steps toward making our streets safer.” This action authorizes the Street Transportation and Police Departments to develop a Roadway Safety Action Plan, focused on reducing the number

Do you have an old or damaged child car seat? NARPRO wants to help recycle it! Anyone can drop off car seats that need to be recycled at one of the participating Network of Neighborhood Auto Repair Professionals shops until April 16. Find a participating NARPRO location at NARPRO.com/find-a-shop.
On April 17, police officers, NARPRO shop owners and volunteers will be dismantling the old car seats. They will recycle the plastic, metal and fabric components separately. For example, elements of the fabric, padding, and straps can be used in animal shelters. Quilted fabric becomes bedding or chew toys for the animals. Long straps make free leashes and lean Polystyrene foam (rigid foam) from seats can be recycled into an Earth Friendly Block.
Car seats don’t last forever, and over time their components will break down, especially in the hot Arizona sun. Older car seats or those that have been involved in an accident may not have visible damage, but they 6 • April 2021 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

PVUSD Volunteers Partner with ASU Lodestar Center to Improve Service to Students By Alexandra Conforti, ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation VOLUNTEER IN PARADISE (VIP), A PROGRAM THROUGH THE PARADISE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (PVUSD), HAS A CORE GROUP OF ABOUT 100 VOLUNTEERS FROM VARIOUS BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING PARENTS, RETIRED EDUCATORS, NURSES AND OTHER SKILLSBASED VOLUNTEERS. Together, they provide one-on-one and smallgroup instruction in reading and math to nearly 1,000 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. But with an estimated 3,000 students in need of the services, VIP needed to grow. Marisha Geraghty, volunteer coordinator for VIP, says they “were at a point where we really felt it was necessary to expand the impact we were having on our students,” and strategic and tactical ideas were necessary to move forward. In early 2020, VIP enrolled in the Service Enterprise Initiative (SEI)
through the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, which works with Points of Light and the Arizona Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith & Family to offer this exclusive volunteermanagement program to Arizona nonprofit and public organizations. VIP is the first school district to go through the Service Enterprise Initiative program with ASU. SEI provides organizations with access to a research-based program that includes a diagnostic evaluation of their current volunteer engagement practices and tailored recommendations for improvement, 16 hours of training focused on change-management and volunteer engagement strategies, and individualized coaching, all working toward national certification as a Service Enterprise from the Points of Light Foundation. Once the pandemic hit, the ASU Lodestar Center and its trainers reinvented SEI as a virtual program. The district expects to receive Service Enterprise certification this spring.
“The process has been illuminating because it shows that, with some small changes, the organization can be a lot more effective,” Geraghty says. Through SEI, the district was able to establish a goal to assist all students in kindergarten through 8th grade that are minimally or partially proficient. Additionally, they were able to track and measure their volunteer value and leverage the skills of high quality volunteers in new ways. Cathy McKeever, a volunteer for VIP, says she has enjoyed tutoring both reading and writing for PVUSD students for the past three school years and values the volunteer experience. McKeever adds that she, Geraghty and other VIPs were able to share the SEI workload and advance through the training together by combining their technical skills, business knowledge and volunteer backgrounds. The district’s initiative and willingness to focus on the change-management process of the program to help benefit their volunteer program, especially through COVID-19, was noticed by Jill Watts, who oversees the SEI program as the director of capacity building initiatives at the ASU Lodestar Center.

City News Free Virtual Job Fair Offers Hundreds of Jobs Across Arizona UNMET JOBS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARIZONA COMMERCE AUTHORITY (ACA), IS HOSTING A VIRTUAL HIRING EVENT FOR BOTH EMPLOYERS AND JOB SEEKERS ACROSS THE STATE. The event, which is free for both the companies and job seekers, goes until April 15. The goal of this first-time event is to maximize the hiring experience for all attendees by providing a personalized, yet virtual, networking experience for job seekers and recruiters amid COVID-19. “Job hunting has never been easy and COVID-19 has made it even more difficult to find employment,” says Emily Ahrens, chief marketing officer of UNMET Jobs. “During UNMET Jobs Arizona 2021, jobseekers will have access to hundreds of employers and thousands of local job postings. Companies will have the opportunity to review resumes from candidates that have recently graduated as well as more seasoned professionals.” According to Ahrens, the platform is inclusive to all levels of experience and features internships, entry level and mid/senior level positions. UNMET Jobs is powered by Largely©, which is a job matchmaking platform focused on improving the job search
experience. Largely humanizes the hiring process by combining the traditional resume with personal videos, highlighting human traits that a resume can never provide: a job seeker’s personality, energy, and uniqueness. HOW UNMET JOBS WORKS: • Job seekers will upload video introductions and answer a questionnaire that explores their personal and professional attributes, together acting as a virtual resume. • Employers are then able to filter from the pool of applicants by selecting various criteria while also being able to browse through recommended lists of applicants. • Employers may then use the platform to contact job seekers directly and set up virtual interviews and invite them to webinars or info sessions. The platform also offers advice, tools and insight on developing an online resume, virtual interview hacks, and answers to frequently asked questions for both employers and job seekers. “Arizona’s educational institutions are producing the workforce of the future, and we’re proud to
partner with UNMET Jobs to highlight our state’s impressive talent pool through this virtual event,” says Sandra Watson, Arizona Commerce Authority President and CEO. “By leveraging technology, we’re able to facilitate a greater number of meaningful connections between Arizona job seekers and job creators.” To sign up for free, visit unmetjobs.com.

Two Local Businesses Set the Standard for Sustainability By Ethan Kispert FOR ROUGHLY 20 YEARS, LIQUIDITY SERVICES’ SCOTTSDALE OFFICE SERVED AS THE MAIN HUB FOR EMPLOYEES THROUGHOUT ALL DEPARTMENTS. But with the COVID-19 pandemic encouraging a switch to telecommuting, Liquidity Services knew they had to make a change, which included closing their Scottsdale office. “When choosing a course of action for closing out the Scottsdale office, sustainability was prioritized as the deciding factor for each step,” according to the company’s 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report. As a surplus company, promoting sustainability is one of their company goals, so Liquidity Services chose to go with a smaller veteran-owned company rather than a
larger outfit. Paradog Junk Hauling & Disposal Services, LLC, a veteran-run local disposal company, was tasked with the removal. The decision, however, was more than just about getting the job done. For Michael Spykes, Paradog’s owner and a retired U.S. Marine veteran, taking on the job meant more to him. “Our belief is that business should serve the community and the greater good,” Spykes says. With the help of Paradog, Liquidity Services was able to remove, recycle, and repurpose nearly 15 tons of office materials and equipment. “Everything from cubicles to coffee machines were carefully assessed, and great care was taken to ensure that only those items which could not be resold, donated, or recycled were taken to a nearby landfill for disposal,” according to Liquidity Services’ report.
“[With this job] we had challenges we don’t normally face, but we’d do it for Liquidity Services again,” Spykes says. With every job Paradog takes on, the goal is to have, “Integrity, traditional work ethics, promptness, thoroughness, and a promise to provide exceptional value and service,” he adds. “While avoiding landfill disposal altogether was not possible, our choice to take the extra time and effort to assess the reusability of each item in the Scottsdale office resulted in tons of material being redirected away from landfills,” according to Liquidity Services. “Though a mass disposal of Scottsdale’s office materials might have been cheaper and faster, we challenged ourselves to create a solution that would reduce our environmental impact and serve as a paragon for sustainable transition to telecommuting.” “In total, 12,000 pounds of steel were recycled and two 26-foot box trucks full of material were donated,” according to Spykes. “As always, the mission of Paradog Junk Hauling & Disposal is: to be nice, provide exceptional value for the money, and to leave every property better than when we found it while remaining environmentally responsible and ethically guided,” he adds. Meet The Paradise Valley Entrepreneur Behind The First Anti-Viral Face Mask KEVIN MACDONALD KNEW IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE AMERICANS WOULD FIND THEMSELVES WEARING FACE MASKS.
As the managing director and co-founder of Innonix Technologies USA LLC, MacDonald manufactures face masks and understands that, while not everyone wants to wear them, they are a necessity in a pandemic. It’s estimated that every 10 years or more a coronavirus from overseas effects its citizens and spreads beyond its borders. A coronavirus is a type of virus that spreads from animals to humans. These viruses cause disease in humans; diseases like MERS, SARS, and now COVID-19. Seasonal flu is also a virus. Over the last 10 years, MacDonald and his

business partners have invested in several biotechnology companies, including the RespoKare line of face masks. These masks are the only FDA-cleared anti-viral masks that quickly destroy 99.99% of human coronavirus as well as influenza and other viruses within minutes of contact with the mask, MacDonald says. MacDonald and his company made it a priority to donate 30,000 RespoKare anti-viral masks to Valley police officers, low-income nursing homes, and teachers that have returned to teaching in a classroom. “Arizona is my home and it is my desire to play a small role in helping fellow Arizonans battle the pandemic,” he
says. “It was very concerning for all Arizonans when we had some of the highest COVID-19 rates in the world.” “Face masks are not fashion statements. They are not political statements. Our masks are FDA 510(k) medical devices. They are effective tools designed to keep people from getting sick or passing their illness to others,” he continues. “Arizona’s medical sector is one of the tools needed to fight this pandemic. With this in mind, I hope our home state will never again be known as a hot spot for a global pandemic.” For more information, visit respokare.com. myhyperlocalnews.com

RENOVATION and DESIGN
North 32nd Author Releases First Book JEFF LARSON, A NORTH 32ND RESIDENT, PHYSICIAN AND SCIENTIST, JUST RELEASED HIS FIRST NOVEL, THE LAST TEN DEGREES. The book is a hard science climate thriller set in 2036 that describes a changing landscape in the southwest, with temperatures of 130 degrees, water shortages, and a medical mystery. The debut novel is 297 pages, including a map of the main character’s travels through Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. “Fans of Michael Crichton will enjoy the hard science aspects and those interested in climate change will find descriptions of the southwest in 2036 hard to put down,” Larson shares. North 32nd News recently caught up with the new author to ask a few questions. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR NOVEL? Since I moved to Phoenix in 2008 I’ve become increasingly interested in the water issues facing Arizona and the southwest with climate change and the decreasing supply from the two reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell. I wanted to write a description about what might happen in the future if we don’t get our water act together now. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE MAIN CHARACTER? The main protagonist, Dr. Stone, is an ego-driven genetic scientist who is creating a treatment for lung cancer. He decides to drive through parts of the southwest on his way to a phase III trial in Denver. Along the way he suffers water bandits and an incident that will change his life.
Concepts
HOW WAS THE PROCESS OF SELF-PUBLISHING YOUR BOOK? I took a course on publishing from ASU’s Piper Center over the summer that led me to choose selfpublishing over a large publishing house. I worked with a self-publishing group in Denver, My Word Publishing, and they were extremely helpful in all aspects of the process. First, I had to get the idea for the novel, and for a long time, I had wanted to write a hard science fiction book along the lines of a Crichton novel. I’ve been very interested in climate change in the southwest. Somehow, the idea of combining those two aspects just came to me one day, and I was able to flesh out the main chapters of the book. The book also contains many descriptions of locations that would be familiar to southwest residents, and are sites that I have personally visited. I collaborated with my wife, who worked for a small publisher, and then worked with a copy editor in Denver to polish the manuscript. I then used a professional book designer to design the book’s interior layout and a cover that would appeal to readers. The designer then placed the novel into Amazon’s print-on-demand software. I had a virtual book launch with 30 participants and the rest is history!

Education Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Help North 32nd Integrated Classrooms Stay Artistic By Karishma Sood
B
ruce Black, an art teacher, head of the fine arts department and head of student leadership at North Phoenix Preparatory Academy, received a $2,500 grant from the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers Program. The grant was used to integrate a better learning environment in fine arts for about 300 students learning both remotely and in-person due to COVID-19 regulations. “The grant had an amazing impact this year because we’ve been able to provide materials for our students to help us get over the hump of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Black says. “Fiesta Bowl Charities and Desert Financial have helped us interact with our students in a more successful way.” Now in its fifth year, the Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers program provides grants statewide for educators to use for classroom supplies, new lesson plans and technology. Over the life of the program,
more than $3.7 million has been donated to nearly 850 teachers. At North Phoenix Preparatory, COVID-19 created new challenges for the fine arts department. “When we were all online, the teachers could design an online curriculum,” Black says. “Now, we are simultaneously teaching on a computer and have a classroom full of students. I’m trying to balance providing an online experience and a classroom experience.” Black wanted to enrich his art class students’ experience, and provide for the other classrooms, like drama and music classes. Black used his grant to purchase items like a class set of keyboards, take-home art kits for remote learners, and recording equipment for the drama classes. “The grant was mainly because of COVID protocol, so we could boost the number of supplies to get to kids who couldn’t afford it,” Black says.
As a liberal arts school, Black chose to use the grant to improve multiple arts programs since all students are required to take these arts classes throughout their high school careers. “The fine arts are an integral component of our curriculum. When we buy art supplies or music supplies or drama supplies, it impacts almost our entire school,” Black says.

Kids’ Corner HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier
T
he summer months are coming soon and local parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy or provide weekly childcare while they are out of school. One solution many parents take advantage of is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp, either in person or virtual, for your kids this year.
WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT In person camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. In a virtual environment, summer camp can provide kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their normal routine. Whether they are at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, kids can let loose and have fun with other kids outside of a school or home environment. Not only are summer camps a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they are out of school, they also teach kids important life lessons like how to make new friends and gain independence. HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are a lot of options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp, to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics, to soccer, art, gymnastics, theater, karate, basketball, and more.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING ON THE RIGHT CAMP: • Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. • Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets they may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by letting them try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like. • Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money, especially if you send your kid to a specialized place. Be sure that you consider all of the expenses involved, including equipment, meals and extras. There are also a variety of options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for nonprofit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community centers and libraries, and online offerings for lower cost options for summer camp. • Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents who need a place for their kids during the summer break, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have.
Epic Ki ds our stories, our adventures EST. 2009
myhyperlocalnews.com
• Start the Search Now: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child, and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family. COVID-19 SAFETY FACTORS No doubt about it, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult to know which summer camp options are best for your camper. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides some guidelines and suggestions for limiting exposure to COVID-19 in onsite summer camp environments; you can see the full list at CDC. gov. The main takeaways are similar to procedures that children may already be familiar with: wear properly fitted masks, be sure to social distance, and always wash hands. Consider packing your camper multiple masks and their own hand sanitizer. Some factors you should consider when looking for an in person camp for your child are: encouraging behaviors that reduce the spread of the virus, maintaining a healthy environment and hygienic facilities operations, and having the right procedures in place to deal with an individual who becomes sick. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! To see a list of camps across the Valley, visit epickidsaz.com/camps. Be sure to check LadyBugsBlog.com for more ideas for having fun outside and out of the house this summer in Arizona.

Four Ways to Improve Curb Appeal This Spring By Holly Reyes, Realtor with HomeSmart
I
f you’re considering selling your home while the Phoenix market is hot, you’re not alone. Many homeowners are taking this opportunity to enter the market, but how can you ensure that your home receives the best offers possible? One simple way is to enhance your home’s curb appeal this spring. These simple tips will help make a great first impression for potential buyers. IMPROVE YOUR ENTRYWAY The entryway is the focal point of the exterior and sets the tone for your space, so it’s important to take the time to create a nice entryway. To start, consider giving your front door a fresh coat of paint and clear any cobwebs from the corners. Don’t be afraid to add décor! Fresh potted plants by the door are a great way to give the area life. If you have a welcome mat, be sure that it is truly welcoming. Make sure it’s in great shape and has a timely message. A spring wreath on the door can add color and charm and tie the space together. CLEAN THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME One of the simplest things you can do to improve
20 POINT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE COOLING CHECKUP
the appearance is to use a power washer to clean the exterior of your home. The most important areas are the front porch, any outdoor decks and the driveway. These high traffic areas easily build up dirt and grime that power washing can remove. Cleaning the windows outside can also help your home shine. If you’re pressed for time, focus on the windows on the front and back of your house as they will likely be looked at the most during a walkthrough. Finally, the wood slats on the gate to your backyard are often overlooked, as you see them every day. Painting or staining them will help them look fresh and tended. DECLUTTER THE YARD Removing any items in your yard that could distract potential homebuyers from your home’s exterior will make a huge difference. The buyers need to be able to envision themselves in your yard and picking up and storing any toys, old lawn art or chairs allows them to do so more easily. Let your neighbors know that you are planning to sell your home as well. If their front yard is a distraction, it could negatively reflect on your home. Sometimes a friendly conversation can help get those weeds pulled or boxes moved.
TEND TO PLANTS AND FLOWER BEDS Once your home and yard are clean, next it’s time to tackle the final and most important step that will give a big visual boost: tidying plants and trees. Now is the time to pull weeds and remove any plants that may have died this winter. As small as it may seem, overgrown weeds or dead plants can be very distracting and not ideal when you’re working to present your house as a buyer’s dream home. Additionally, consider trimming any trees that are overgrown or are touching the home. This small task can make a difference when potential buyers are considering the work they may need to put into the yard. We all know that homes are selling fast but improving curb appeal and eliminating simple tasks for buyers can be what helps draw in multiple and competitive offers. I
f you are like a majority of us, the last year has led to more time at home and more home improvement projects. Since the start of COVID-19, home renovation projects have increased nationwide by 58 percent. One of the areas that many people are upgrading is their flooring. There are a lot of different floor covering options, and for the average consumer, picking the right one can be overwhelming. To help, the experts at Healthy Home Flooring have shared some tips on how to choose the perfect flooring for your home. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FLOORING There are many aspects to consider when choosing the best flooring. Between vinyl, hardwood, tile and carpet, each flooring option has its own unique benefits. Healthy Home Flooring shares their expertise about the pros and cons of each. LUXURY VINYL PLANK Luxury Vinyl Plank is great for residents who love the look of wood floors but need more durability. Vinyl flooring has the same luxurious design as wood, is more affordable, and is more resilient to scratching and denting. It is also 100% waterproof, which makes vinyl an excellent choice for high-traffic areas like bathrooms, dining rooms and kitchens. HARDWOOD Hardwood flooring is a gorgeous option and it will significantly increase the home’s value. However, some hardwood flooring can be more susceptible to dents and scratches so this is better for homes without pets or children. TILE Tile flooring has the most versatility with the ability to mix and match colors and sizes to create unique patterns. Tile is waterproof, stain and scratch resistant, and creates a high-end design

in the home. It will also keep floors cool, which is crucial in the summer. CARPET Carpet is the key choice when looking for comfort. The coziness of carpet makes it a great option for bedrooms, playrooms and offices. Most of Healthy Home Flooring carpets are hypoallergenic. Carpet traps allergens rather than letting it float around so regular carpet cleaning and vacuuming will help get rid of any dust in the flooring. Healthy Home Flooring offers a lifetime stain and pet guarantee so this is a great option for families with pets and small children. Healthy Home Flooring will work with each individual to find the perfect fit for his or her home, according to the company. You can also take different options for a spin when looking at flooring samples. All of the flooring choices at Healthy Home Flooring are uniquely eco-friendly and hypoallergenic. This makes all of the flooring easy to clean, safe to play on, and low maintenance. They also note that COVID-19 precautions are taken in all customer interactions. In addition, home renovations can be messy, so they offer free air duct cleanings with every purchase. Flooring can break, dent, scratch or stain over the years so Health Home Flooring also offers a “Worry-Free Guarantee” and will fix or replace any flooring for free up to 10 years. This gives homeowners the ability to live in their home without worrying about their flooring. For more information, visit healthyhomeflooring.co or call 623404-4444.

Legal Pets, Trust and Estate Planning By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
T
hose of us with pets consider them family members. And like the rest of the family, we want to make sure they are taken care of when we can no longer do the job. The wealthy sometimes go to the extreme to provide for their pets. Leona Helmsley is one of the most famous examples, having left her entire $12 million fortune to Trouble, her dog. The family sued, and the judge whittled Trouble’s share down to $2 million. The widow of the Star Trek creator left $4 million for their dogs, and $1 million for the employee to care for them. Even Oprah Winfrey has established a pet trust for her beloved dogs, setting aside $30 million for their care, according to Australia’s Woman’s Day magazine. One of my favorites is Miami heiress Gail Posner who left $3 million for her three dogs – and $2 million to her son. Pet trusts are a real thing provided for under Arizona law. You might find that your own neighbors may need a pet trust. Why? Because some pets can live a long, long time, like my friend’s Tortuga tortoise, Pepe, who could live to be 100. A cockatoo can live as long as 60 years. When your pets could easily outlive you, you need to plan for them! Who will take care of them when you are gone?
Money is important to providing for your pets as well, especially if you have a with expensive upkeep. Caring for horses, for example, requires a much greater expenditure of time and money than the care for a dog or cat. Setting up a trust provides the money so that it is not a burden on the person who receives your pets at your death and assures your pets will live out their natural life the way you would want. Pet trusts allow a pet owner to provide not just money for the animal, but also detailed requirements for their care. What veterinarian to use, what food to feed the pet, weekly grooming, even regular walks or car rides can be required and paid for in the trust. The pet trust can be created as a separate trust or created within your own revocable living trust. Often, my clients simply designate the caregiver to take the pets, and give a cash gift with the pet. Whatever you decide to do to provide for you pets, it is important to put it in writing if you want it to be binding. Having a plan in place for your assets, for your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind. Parent Partners Plus is collaborative network of early childhood home visiting programs in Maricopa County who partner with families to support their child’s growth and development. Funded by First Things First, programs are designed to be offered one-on-one in the family’s home, but have also been offered virtually during the pandemic. The home visiting programs in the Parent Partners Plus network support parents with all of the challenges they will encounter as they raise their new baby. For many parents, sleep—both for themselves and for their baby—is the biggest struggle those first few months. It can be a big adjustment for parents who go from getting a full night’s sleep to waking up with a baby every few hours. The programs in the Parent Partners Plus network offer encouragement and tips for helping everyone get a good night’s sleep. Parent Partners Plus programs are not just for families with new babies, but also cover topics for expecting parents and parents with toddlers. Some
other areas they support families are breastfeeding information and guidance, potty training, bedtime routines, and much more. With all of these topics, the advice provided to the family is individualized to their situation since all kids and families are different and what works for one family might not work for another. Literacy is another important feature of early childhood home visiting programs. It is never too early to start reading with young children and parents can even start during pregnancy. All home visiting programs want to help families develop solid routines around reading to their children—many even provide books to families to help them get started. The biggest area that home visitation programs help families is with child development and making sure children meet their developmental milestones. Many families have concerns about their child’s development, but don’t know what is considered normal and where to go for help. Home visitation programs can help by providing developmental screenings to give parents an idea of how their child is developing so they can speak further with their pediatrician and get appropriate referrals if needed.
All families with young children deserve help and support. These programs in the community make sure new parents get that support early on so they feel confident they are doing all they can to help their young children succeed. Learn more at ParentPartnersPlus.com. Emily Singleton is the Parent Partners Plus senior program manager at Southwest Human Development.

Expert Tips to Help Reduce Your Daily Sugar Intake By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
S
ugar: it’s sweet, it tastes good, but it comes with a cost. Overconsumption can lead to chronic health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, and more. Sugar can directly inhibit the immune system and cause inflammation in the body. It is all around us and can often be hidden in foods we may least expect. TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR DAILY SUGAR INTAKE Eliminate sugary beverages. Sodas, energy drinks, fancy flavored coffee drinks and juices are very high in sugar. Even those “healthy” premade smoothies/juices can be full of sugar. Calories from sugary drinks do not satisfy our appetite like whole real foods do so we tend to consume larger quantities. Instead try the following: • Sparkling water and add lemon or lime to flavor. • Herbal tea (without caffeine counts as water) and try it iced in the hot weather months. • If you drink coffee, you can add stevia, which is a natural sweetener, or unsweetened alternative milk. • And just plain water: most of us do not drink enough of it anyway. Read the labels and look for hidden sugars. We know the obvious sugar rich foods such as sodas, candy bars and desserts. But there are many hidden sugars in the processed foods we eat. Added sugar can be found in ketchup, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, canned soups and spaghetti sauce. We can also find added sugars in alternative milk. It is important to read the ingredient labels and choose foods that do not have these added sugars. Choose unsweetened alternative milks and reduced or no sugar sauces. Or even better, make your own at home. Eat more protein and full fat foods. When you eat protein rich foods, the blood sugar does not spike like it does with sugar rich foods. Adding in protein snacks throughout the day can help myhyperlocalnews.com
balance blood sugar and decrease those sugar cravings. Many of us have been programed to think that fat is a bad thing, especially when you may want to lose weight and cut calories. Unfortunately, the “low fat” or “fat free” options typically contain more sugar, thus adding more calories. Full fat foods also help us feel satisfied, which will help cut those sugar cravings. Plus, they just taste better! I encourage patients to pick the full fat Greek yogurt or the full fat cottage cheese in moderation. Watch out for “healthy” processed foods. Even foods from a health food store can have high amounts of sugar. Hidden sugar can be found in granola bars, protein bars, premade fruit smoothies and some dried fruits. Always check the labels for the added sugars. Alternatives for these snacks can include: a handful of nuts or trail mix with dried fruit with no added sugar, a hard-boiled egg, or fresh fruit with a protein source (i.e., apple slices with nut butter). Decreasing sugar in your diet has many benefits, including potential weight loss, reducing inflammation, strengthening the immune system, and improving chronic diseases and overall health. Your naturopathic doctor can further individualize treatment that is tailored to your specific health goals. Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER
A
dults often describe attention deficit disorder (ADHD) as feeling like everyone else is on the escalator while they’re taking the world’s most tortuous staircase. Eventually they arrive at the destination, but it takes exponentially more effort to get there. ADHD is estimated to affect 5-10% of the population and is widely under-diagnosed. A common symptom is feeling like your brain is trying to take a straight path but is constantly being pulled off course. You may find yourself trying to set reminders and using tools to avoid even simple oversights like forgetting your keys three times before leaving the house. Attention deficit is disorder is one of the most common mental health conditions that we encounter at Uptown Psychiatry. Although the diagnosis is often made in adulthood, the symptoms of ADHD have been present since childhood. Once the diagnosis is discovered, clients often look back and realize the impact it has had throughout their lifetime. Fortunately, ADHD is one of the most treatable conditions we encounter and it doesn’t take long to realize the benefits of treatment.

America Gets a Green New Deal
COVID relief law provides additional tax credits to homeowners to pay for solar By Michael O’Donnell
J
oe Biden is now the president of the United States and the Democrats now have a majority in both houses of Congress. Giving Americans a Green New Deal was front and center in the platform that the president and Democratic congressional candidates ran on to get elected, and they and the president’s administration are wasting no time in delivering on that promise. In terms of ambition, the president’s call to address climate change is nothing short of JFK’s “moonshot,” his declaration that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.The call to end the use of fossil fuels in the next 15 to 25 years is on par with that goal and perhaps more urgent to humanity. Immediately following the inauguration, the president recommitted the United States to the Paris Climate Accord, a treaty meant to limit global warming by holding countries mutually responsible for drastically reducing their share of greenhouse-gas emissions. America’s participation in this global effort very likely will add significant costs to oil, gas, and coal. In addition, the Keystone XL Pipeline, a conduit meant to transport oil from Canada, was canceled. These measures will probably increase the price Americans pay for gasoline at the pump and for electricity in their homes. The government’s plan to transition American homeowners from heating and cooling their homes with fossil fuels to doing so with renewable energy incorporates both carrots and sticks. The new COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress in early January has significantly increased the federal tax credit that offsets the cost of home solar systems. Without that act of Congress, the federal subsidy for an average size home in the Phoenix area would have been thousands of dollars less this year and zero next year. The provisions of the law will increase the tax credit homeowners get for solar by thousands of dollars. Most homes in APS’ territory that convert from fossil fuels to solar may receive between $7,000 and $18,000, depending on the size of the home and energy usage. The systems can be designed to reduce APS customers’ annual bill to $0 or even a negative total. The larger the system, the larger the federal government’s subsidy. Hence, the larger the system, the lower the APS bill (or the higher the payment to the homeowner).
GO SOLAR URGENT!
GO SOLAR BEFORE YOU ARE LOCKED OUT! Sunsolar Solutions, Inc. ROC 331679
The stick is, obviously, the ever increasing cost of fossil-fuel-generated electricity, which will make solar power for homes more and more compelling. It is basically the same strategy the government used to reduce the number of American tobacco smokers. While the warning label got people’s attention, it was the increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes, from 80 cents to $8 a pack, that really drove people to quit. A no-money-down, financed home solar system typically incurs a monthly payment that’s $50 to $100 per month less than the amount they’re currently paying the utility company for the same electricity. Mr. and Mrs. Jenson signed up for solar in early February.“We were very happy to see that the cost of the solar system and the monthly payment in the proposal we received in February were significantly lower than in the proposal we received in December before the COVID relief bill,” they say. “With the U.S. government making renewable energy a big priority, we know our utility costs will increase faster in the near future than it has in the past. We’re excited to use the incentives to lock in and lower our electricity costs and have our family be part of the solution to climate change.” You may be surprised at the current cost of a solar system. The cost of solar panels have come down 70 percent in the last 10 years while electricity prices have continue to climb. When you add in the additional incentives provided in the COVID-19 relief legislation, you will experience a lower annual cost and see a profit in many cases of between $50,000 and $100,000 in the next 25 years by switching to solar. And this does not include the profit you will realize when you sell your house for a higher price because of the $0 electric bill, as compared to the price you would get if you had to sell it with a bill costing thousands of dollars per year and increasing annually If you would like to receive a free solar design customized to your house and your family’s usage, just call 623-562-9004 or visit greendeal.sunsolarsolutions.com.
