ADOR REMINDS ARIZONANS TO BE ON ALERT FOR SCAM ARTISTS DURING INCOME TAX FILING SEASON TAX-RELATED SCAMS AND IDENTITY THEFT REMAIN A SERIOUS ISSUE ALL ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, so the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) reminds taxpayers to remain vigilant in protecting their private information from scam artists wanting to steal their identities for fraudulent refunds during this tax filing season.

• Demand you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed. • Require you to use a specific payment method to pay your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card. • Threaten to bring in local police or other lawenforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

The Department of Revenue, which has an advanced fraud prevention system in place and continues to adapt and introduce new counter measures, advises people to be on the lookout at home and at work for criminals using phishing schemes, fraudulent phone marketing calls and online cons.

The Arizona Department of Revenue reports one scam that continues to surface is the W2 scam, which involves a phishing email sent to someone in a company’s human resources or payroll office. The email appears to be from an executive of that business and asks for confidential payroll information to be emailed immediately. The Department advises companies and their staff to never respond to the email, and instead connect with the person whose name is on the email by phone or in person to confirm its authenticity.

ADOR reminds taxpayers the Department will never: • Use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. • Call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without first having mailed out an official notice.

Tips for preparing your return: • File early and file electronically. E-filing is more secure.

• Ensure all the necessary lines and forms are filled out properly. Avoid math errors or miscalculations. • Don’t misspell names or use two different names. Don’t forget to sign and date your return. • Make sure key information like a tax ID number, Social Security number, routing number or account number are correct in all the appropriate boxes. • Double check that all the information and supporting documentation is correct. • If a person gets a phone call from ADOR requesting additional information, you can contact the Department’s Customer Care Center, Local: (602) 255-3381, Toll-free: (800) 352-4090, to confirm the call was in fact from an ADOR official. Arizonans with tax-related ID theft questions should contact the Department of Revenue’s Identity Theft Call Center, Local: (602) 716-6300, Toll free: (800) 352-4090 or www.azdor.gov/ identitytheft.aspx, the Internal Revenue Service, or the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS 2018 MARKS AN EXCITING, MILESTONE YEAR FOR THE HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOL. IT’S BEEN 20 YEARS SINCE BOB & KATHY HUBBARD decided to take the plunge and open their first swim school in Phoenix that was dedicated to teaching infants and children how to swim and learn to be safe around water. From the very beginning, their philosophy about swimming has always been the same: Learning to swim should not be a choice. Every child must learn how to swim. Fox six years prior to opening their first swim school - from 1992 to 1998 - Bob had been the Director of the Phoenix Swim Club and, along with Kathy, had focused on coaching and training top-level, elite swimmers. The couple was not coaching children at that time - they were busy raising eight children of their own. Three of their kids were in college, two in high school, and three were in grade school.

The Hubbards both had strong backgrounds in the sport of swimming. Bob had first developed his passion for swimming while working as a beach lifeguard in New York while Kathy had been a champion, competitive swimmer in college and even qualified for the 1968 Olympic Trials. After many successful years of coaching award-winning, adult swimmers, the couple decided that what they really wanted to do was go back to basics and focus primarily on teaching infants and children how to swim and truly share their love of the water with other families.

Now, two decades and two additional swim schools later, the Hubbards have not only taught thousands of babies, children, and children with special needs, they’ve also become world-renowned leaders and expert speakers in the field of infant swimming. Recently

in fact, Bob and Kathy were awarded the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award by the U.S. Swim School Association for their many years of leadership and dedication to the learn-to-swim industry.

“Swimming and splashing with all the adorable babies and children over the years has been so fulfilling and rewarding for us,” says Kathy Hubbard. “It has meant a great deal to us knowing that we are not only teaching children how to swim, we are also introducing them to a beautiful sport that they will be able to enjoy throughout their lifetime. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Mornings usually include emails and phone calls after breakfast, then I’ll either head to off-site meetings or into the gym to conduct a quick walk-through to see how everything looks. If I don’t have more emails or planning meetings in the afternoon, I’ll spend some time catching up with members and guests as they’re climbing before going on a run with our dogs and grabbing dinner with my wife, Iliana.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… It’s the neighborhood I grew up in and I’ve been able to watch it grow into something amazing.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Forrest Gump – it’s an entertaining chronicle of events with one of my favorite actors as a lead. MY FAMILY… Is my biggest inspiration and one of the reasons I try to be the best possible version of myself.

THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… Of all the hard lessons I’ve learned starting a business, the most significant at this point in the process is that I can’t do everything myself. It’s hard getting burned by people you thought you could trust, but it’s nearly impossible to create an amazing experience for your customers without being able to trust others to help you build that experience.

THREE WAYS A BUSINESS LEADER GETS PEOPLE TO FOLLOW

o get the most out of their workforce, today’s business leaders may need to look at their own role – and their workers – a bit differently than leaders did decades ago.

“A strong and effective leader certainly stands at the top of a hierarchy, but great leaders today don’t act hierarchically,” says Don Rheem, author of Thrive By Design: The Neuroscience that Drives High-Performance Cultures, and CEO of E3 Solutions (www.e3solutions.com), a provider of employee workplace metrics and manager training. “While people thrive under great leaders, in today’s business world they are also looking for a safe haven work environment where respect, trust and encouragement are bedrocks of the work culture.” Rheem suggests three ways a company leader can get people to follow, and do so without being punitive and domineering:

DON’T TREAT EMPLOYEES LIKE CHILDREN The level of complexity and the pace of change that leaders at all levels face today is unprecedented. The pressure for achievement is intense and when mistakes are made, or when staff show up disengaged, tempers can flare. “Frustration and anger are powerful emotions, and when leaders get flooded with these feelings they typically fall into a model of leadership and accountability deeply embedded in their memories – parenting, So they demote their employees to the role of children,” Rheem says. “But most adults do not want to be patronized or treated like children. Those ways don’t inspire employees to thrive in their work environment or put forth their best effort. Employees today, especially among the current generation entering the workplace, are far more likely to quit or deliberately underperform under those conditions. That’s bad for morale, damages the culture, and encourages turnover.”

“There is a very high emotional cost in making difficult choices that affect other people’s lives,” Rheem says. “Most of us would prefer having those decisions made by someone we trust and have faith in, not someone who brandishes a title or threats of punitive consequences in order to achieve authority. o you know where your meals come from? At a restaurant, you assume your meal is readied by a chef, or even a professional cook. Perhaps, you would believe your lunch at a staff meeting was assembled by a team of sandwich makers from a café with some catchy name. Have you ever thought your meal could have be created by a group of people with special needs with oversight from a highly trained Chef? Welcome to the culinary and catering programs and business at the Life Skill Center for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities of the Civitan Foundation in Phoenix. Each weekday, people with special needs work in Civitan’s commercial kitchen preparing meals for schools and businesses. From salads, sandwiches and wraps, steaks, barbeque, to pastas and deserts, and even special catered events, this team of talented cooks can make it all. With oversight from our very own local Chef Philip Occhipinti. After many years working in corporate culinary programs, Occhipinti now spends his days teaching and training the team of coaches and members in all aspects of daily cooking, food safety, catering and food service. Civitan provides vocational training and employment opportunities for its members through the Life Skill Center at the Civitan Village in Phoenix. One of the daily programs at the Life Skill Center includes complete training about food safety, food nutrition and basic kitchen skills. These programs are part of a group supported employment program, enabling the members to work with coaches while continually learning and earning an hourly income. The goal of the program is to open doors and

build opportunities for the member to eventually work independently. Known as the Cookery, Civitan’s kitchen stays busy year-round. Each week the team works with local restaurants for some prep work, lunch cafes at several charter schools (many do not have their own kitchens), and in-house lunches, daily cash café and special events. During the summer months, Civitan participates, and is instrumental in The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) serving and delivering nearly 80,000 USDA-approved meals and snacks for low-income children in north Phoenix when school is not in session, ensuring that low income children continue to receive nutritious meals daily. aseball season has arrived! Our family loves to go to baseball games. Not only does this activity let you get your kids out of the house, it also allows your family to see nature and science in action. Fresh air and bird watching abound, not to mention baseball statistics, field geometry and the aerodynamics of baseballs in action! Ladybug is a baseball kid and roots for the Arizona Diamondbacks like a pro. She is also learning more and more about America’s Greatest Pastime and the teams that play with each game we attend. Baseball is a very kid-friendly sport. Most teams go out of their way to make sure that the whole family can enjoy a game together by providing activities and special extras just for kids. Take the time to find out what is available at your local ballpark before you go. Knowledge is power and can make your baseball adventure much more enjoyable. One really cool aspect of baseball is how it can relate directly to science and mathematics. The Arizona Diamondbacks partnered with Chase and Insight in 2013 to develop and launch a program that promotes the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for kids in the Arizona education system. The Arizona Diamondbacks Science of Baseball, presented by Chase and Insight each season, has reached over 6000 students in 100 schools - just one more reason to love going to a baseball game in Phoenix. To get the most fun out of taking your kid to a baseball game, consider the following before you go: • Buy your tickets in advance: Various pric-

es and levels of tickets are available if you buy your tickets at the ballpark, but it’s a better idea to buy your tickets in advance so you know exactly what you’re getting. You can go online to pick your seat locations, stay within your price range, and make sure all of your seats are located together. The fewer surprises, the more fun for your family. • Plan your parking strategy: There are usually many different parking options for a ballpark, but they vary in price and distance. It’s a good idea to know where you plan to park before you go, so you know how early you need to get there before the game and how much you need to spend on parking. • Get there early: The parking, walking, waiting in lines and maneuvering your family into their seats takes time. There’s no way around it, so make it a point to get to the game early. Take a look at the ballpark information before you go, as the time they open the gates can vary from game to game. Be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat (especially if you are in Arizona), in the event you have to wait in line for the gates to open. • Plan your meals: Eating is one of the main activities we do at a baseball game. Chase Field has so many options, it can be hard to choose. It’s a good idea to think about your snacking or mealtime strategy before you go. •Take time to explain the game: One of the most important, and entertaining, aspects of going to a game with your kid is teaching them about the game itself. Explain scoring, hitting, running bases and teams. Older kids can get into stats and seasons. • Bring a dose of patience: Whenever you are having a fun adventure with your kids, be sure to bring your patience with you. Make time for bathroom breaks, sightseeing, snacks, activities and

gift shop trips. Enjoy seeing your kids have fun and realize that they need breaks and rest to make this activity a memorable one. Last but not least have fun! Baseball is a game, and games are all about having fun. This should be a fun adventure with your kids - make it one of the lifetime memories for your whole family. • Stage 1: Adjusting to a new lifestyle. Many new retirees brim with excitement when retirement begins. They can golf, visit museums, play with their grandchildren, travel or catch up on their reading. Not everyone adjusts well, though. It’s not easy to flip the switch overnight after you’ve spent several decades reporting to work every

day. Also, if your retirement income is largely dependent on your savings you’ll want to be careful that you don’t spend too much in those initial years. “Your adviser should be able to help you come up with a plan that will give you income for life so you don’t have to worry about running out of money,” Teboda says. • Stage 2: Staying socially connected. As the years pass, many retirees move closer to their children or move into a retirement community because it makes them feel more socially connected. “Sometimes at this point, especially if they haven’t planned well, people may start to have even more worries that they will outlive their money,” Teboda says. “One way they address that is to cut back on expenses. Some people even decide to get a part-time job to bring in extra money and working becomes another way to stay connected.”

• Stage 3: Realizing you may need assistance. More than 70 percent of Americans older than 65 will need some form of long-term care at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “When people map out their retirement,” Teboda says, “they need to plan for that possibility because the cost of long-term care can be devastating to your finances.” He says people need to consider a number of factors – taxes, longevity and market risks, among others – to improve the odds of a joyful retirement, which is one reason Teboda says his firm takes a team approach to advising, using financial professionals with different areas of expertise. For example, one team member, Amanda Jager, is an Associate Financial Adviser, and another, Kevin C. Sanders, while also an Associate Financial Adviser, is an attorney specializing in estate planning. “In each stage of retirement,” Teboda says, “it’s important to confer regularly with your adviser and to be ready to adjust your financial plans if necessary.”

ANNIHILATION

A biologist enters a mysterious area called “The Shimmer” to discover the reason behind several disappearances. Annihilation is an experience. Each visual, sound and bit of music immerses you into the world presented, putting you in the shoes of the characters. Writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) gives every moment in the Shimmer both a sense of dread and wonder at the same time, bolstered by the beautiful cinematography from Rob Hardy. The characters are interesting in how they are not completely 100 percent good or bad, each one giving a different performance on how their characters view the strange situations of the story. It drags a bit in the first act, but when Annihilation gets going, it’s fantastic.

Two friends create a plan to murder the stepfather of one of them. Cory Finley’s debut feature is…. something. The tone can be jarring, but it really works in many of the scenes, having some darkly humorous moments. The deadpan acting is rather mixed, with Olivia Cooke’s character working due to the character’s lack of emotion, but Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance feeling odd, given the character is supposed to “feel everything”. The late Anton Yelchin gives the best performance as the creepy Tim, however, playing a hateable but weirdly funny character. Finley’s camerawork and editing also adds on to the uncomfortable feeling, with several long takes featured in the film. It’s probably not a film for everyone, but anyone into strange films with insane protagonists will probably like this.

Watching Red Sparrow, I thought director Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games sequels) was the wrong choice for this film, as his style doesn’t fit with the dark tones of the film. The leads, Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton, also seem bored throughout the film, very rarely feeling like they’re invested in the intensity of certain scenes. It’s another example for me where the supporting cast is much better, with this film mainly coming from Matthias Schoenaerts and Jeremy Irons. I also have to give the film credit for not holding back on a lot of the graphic material seen in the film. It’s rare to see a really hard R rating in mid-budget film from big studios nowadays, but I’m glad Fox is still keeping them alive, even if they’re not always the best.

oute 66. The Mother Road. The Great American Highway. No matter what name you give it, U.S. Route 66 is a true part of historic Americana and a great way to see some of the most delightful destinations in the western part of the United States. We are lucky in Arizona to have ready access to some of the best highlights along the historic route. Here are some highlights of the best spots to see here in Arizona along the Mother Road. The most noted stops on the old Route 66 in Arizona include Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, and Kingman. The National Park Service also provides list of notable and historic sites along the highway, including: • Querino Canyon Bridge, Houck • Painted Desert Inn, Petrified Forest National Park • Wigwam Village Motel #6, Holbrook • La Posada Historic District, Winslow • Walnut Canyon Bridge, Winona • Railroad Addition Historic District and Boundary Increase, Flagstaff • Seligman Historic District, Seligman • Peach Springs Trading Post, Peach Springs • Schoolhouse at Truxton Canyon Trading School, Valentine • Kingman Commercial Historic District, Kingman • Durlin Hotel, Oatman • Old Trails Bridge, Topock However, when we travel with our daughter, we like to venture a bit off the road to see some of the more fantastic sights, national parks, towns and destinations. We have many “to visit” places on our list for the near future, but these are the places we have visited so far. METEOR CRATER Giant billboards usually over promise and under deliver. The billboard for meteor crater just can’t come close to describing the real thing. An incredible sight - like something out of this world and nothing you’ve ever seen. You simply must stop and see this national landmark. WALNUT CANYON Just a bit off the road right before you

get to Flagstaff is a wonder of nature and history that you simply must see. Walnut Canyon National Monument is a short hike down a steep cliff, allowing visitors to walk through ancient cliff dwellings with stunning views. A relatively quick trip through the dwellings, this is a one of a kind sight. Be sure to bring your walking (or better yet hiking) shoes if you decide to take the trail down.

SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO East of Flagstaff and north of I-40 is another wonder of nature - the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Stop for a look at a very recent volcanic lava flow - a fascinating picture of science in action. WUPATKI North of Sunset Crater, on the road to the east entrance to the Grand Canyon, lies Wupatki National Monument. In the middle of the desert with views of the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, you will find dozens (perhaps hundreds) of ancient pueblo settlements dotting the landscape. It’s a fascinating picture of native life before the volcano erupted and western settlers arrived.

A few tiny towns dot the route, including Seligman and Peach Springs. Seligman is a quaint town with antique stores, restaurants and refurbished motor inns - a true Route 66 delight!

Peach Springs is an historic town on the Hualapai Reservation. This is the entrance to the reservation and the road that takes visitors to Havasu Falls at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on Havasupai tribal lands. The trip to Havasu Falls is a destination unto itself, and remember - you must make reservations in advance with the tribe. Don’t try to hike down and camp without calling ahead. The rangers will send you right back up at the end of the day! HAPPY TRAILS! Take a trip down the historic Mother Road and stop to see the sights as you go. BUTTERFLIES AND WILDFLOWERS – SPRING BLOOMS IN THE SONORAN DESERT By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

hen spring bursts to life in the Sonoran Desert, it doesn’t hold back. Mother Nature paints with every color available in her palette to bring to life an abundance of wildflowers and butterflies throughout the landscape. Many of these places can only be found by pulling on your hiking shoes and hitting the trail. But others are more readily available in places that welcome visitors of all abilities. Here are a few of our favorite spots to see wildflowers and butterflies in a grand celebration of Spring!

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN The Desert Botanical Garden is a fantastic place to see both wildflowers and butterflies in Phoenix, without having to venture off trail. The Desert Botanical Garden specializes in wildflowers of all kinds and has a special area set aside to see seasonal blooms. They also host a Spring Butterfly Exhibit from February 24, 2018 - May 13, 2018.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a beautiful place to visit in Superior, Arizona. They have every type of desert plant and allow visitors to stroll through their gardens to see the beauty of the desert as slightly higher elevations. The arboretum also hosts guided wildflower walks in March and April, as well as special butterfly tours in the summer months. ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is a fantastic place to visit, and a wonderful way to see wildflowers and butterflies without going very far off the beaten path. This state of the art facility is a must-see for desert wildflowers and butterflies if you are in Tucson. SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK – EAST AND WEST Some of the most beautiful spots for seeing Arizona wildflowers, butterflies

and other forms of desert wildlife are in Saguaro National Park in Tucson. Both the east and west sides of the park offer idyllic vistas of the pristine Sonoran Desert in the full bloom of spring. CATALINA STATE PARK One of the hotspots in the Tucson area for wildflower sightings is the Catalina State Park. Situated between Oro Valley and Tucson in the Catalina Mountain foothills, this is a beautiful park with some fantastic trails for hikers of every ability. WHITE TANK MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK The White Tank Mountain Regional Park in the west part of the valley is one of our favorite places to hike and see wildflowers on full display in the desert. This park has some of the best wildflower and butterfly sightings we have seen in our time here in the Phoenix area. The trails range in difficulty from easy to very difficult, so check out the trail map and ask a ranger before you set out.

MCDOWELL MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK The McDowell Mountain Regional Park in the east valley, north of Fountain Hills, has some of the best wildflower vistas I’ve ever seen. The entire side of the mountain is covered in wildflowers in the spring, painting a breathtaking view of the landscape. The best trails to view these wildflowers are a little more challenging to get to and require quite a bit of hiking, so be prepared and dress for a trek. And don’t forget to check with the park rangers first, to see what trails are best and whether the mountain is in full bloom when you go. These are just a few of the many areas to see the stunning color and majesty of wildflowers and butterflies in the Sonoran Desert, but it will give you a great start for this spring.
